Grundy County Board

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – John Galloway has submitted his resignation from the Grundy County Board.

The resignation of Galloway, who represents District 2, is effective Monday. He was elected to the board in 2006.

He is chairman of the county’s Finance Committee and also serves on three other committees. Galloway said Wednesday afternoon he is proud of all the county has accomplished during his nine years on the board, but because of work obligations he is unable to give his seat the time that is needed.

“I was given a new position as supervisor at Exelon [Dresden Station] where I work,” Galloway said. “I’ve served nine years, and it’s time to step down and give someone a chance to step up who can give it the time and attention needed.”

Galloway’s term was set to end in December 2016. His vacancy must be filled within 60 days by appointment of the board chairman with the board’s advice and consent.

County Administrator Doug Pryor agreed that Galloway will be missed.

“John has great institutional knowledge and has been very helpful with the budget process,” Pryor said.

Galloway said the financial knowledge is something he gained while on the board.

When he started, he wasn’t sure how the finances of the county worked but quickly took interest and learned, which led him to sitting on the Finance Committee and eventually serving as finance chairman.

He said the recent addition of Pryor as administrator makes it easier to step down.

“When we hired Doug, I think I told him, ‘Now I think I can leave.’ He is the most sound choice we’ve had in the administrator position in a long time,” Galloway said.

Pryor said that once the position is vacated Monday, the county has three days to send a notice to the central committees of the county’s Republican and Democratic parties.

Welter said that once the Republican party caucus presents its nomination to fill the seat, he will send that decision to the full County Board for consideration.

The county has 60 days to fill the position and because Galloway was a Republican, the position will be filled by a Republican.

For Coal City family, rebuilding after tornado is reason to be thankful

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – As the Berger family sits around the Thanksgiving table this year, they have a lot to be thankful for – despite having lost their home in the June 22 tornado that struck Coal City.

Tiffany Berger and her sons, Gavin, 7, and Nolan, 11, went to a neighbor’s home after the sirens alerted them to a possible tornado that Monday night. Her husband, Kenny, stayed home with the family dog.

After the EF3 tornado blew through the area, Nolan found himself racing to where their house once stood, yelling for his dad and praying that he was OK. Those prayers were answered true: Kenny was found under three walls that had collapsed on top of him.

“This year I’m thankful my dad didn’t get hurt,” Nolan said Wednesday while standing in an empty lot where the family’s new home will be built.

The family had rented the destroyed home. They moved in with Tiffany’s parents, Joe and Linda Spiezio of Morris, while they figured out where to go and what to do next.

Tiffany said in September they found the perfect lot on Oak Street that sits across the street from the Coal City High School baseball field – a field she is sure Nolan plans to play on once he gets to high school.

“We joked that the moms can sit here in our driveway and watch them play,” Tiffany said.

The family closed on the lot in early November and are eagerly awaiting the ground breaking on the three-bedroom ranch home of their dreams in the town they love.

“We wanted to stay in the same subdivision, and we picked this lot because we want a basement,” Tiffany said. “The location is perfect.

Nolan said he will be happy to be back living near his friends, as well as his baseball and basketball practices.

Tiffany said that with 6 a.m. practices, the drive from Morris adds to an already long day.

“I’m ready to move in because I can go to my friend’s house,” Gavin said. “My buddy has a pool and I can go swimming in it next summer.”

Grundy leaders thankful for community, family

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com GRUNDY COUNTY – Like the residents of communities they serve, officials who are elected or appointed to serve Grundy County communities can’t wait to be with their families and friends on Thanksgiving.

They often take solace in the simple things in life, away from the not-always-so-simple process of determining what’s best for their communities.

When asked to reflect on what they’re thankful for and their plans for Thanksgiving, community leaders’ responses ranged from municipality- to family-related sentiments.

Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc said she is thankful no one died in the 2013 tornado in Diamond and Coal City and the June 2015 tornado in Coal City and Braidwood. She is equally as thankful Diamond has fully recovered and Coal City is on its way to recovering

from damage to more than 800 properties.

She’s thankful for low-maintenance, strong-willed residents and a village board united in its vision for Diamond.

She’s also thankful for her family’s ability to understand the devotion and time it takes to be a community leader.

“They love me despite that, and they are truly precious,” Kernc said.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick echoed Kernc’s thoughts about the community he calls home and the ones surrounding it.

“I’m thankful to be in a community that is so caring of others,” Kopczick said. “Just look at the work done by organizations such as We Care of Grundy County, Operation St. Nick and our churches and residents to support one another.”

Personally, Kopczick is thankful his family is blessed with good health and the birth of his second granddaughter.

He is only hoping for the continued health of his family and friends.

“I’m blessed beyond what I deserve,” Kopczick said.

“Their health and well-being is the greatest gift I could ask for.”

Morris building and zoning officer Bill Cheshareck said he’s thankful his two kids are healthy and enjoying themselves at Illinois State University. He is now relatively healthy, he said, after some scares the last few years.

“I’m happy things are going smoothly,” Cheshareck said.

He’s also grateful for the city he’s lived in his entire life. In a small community, Cheshareck said, you come to appreciate a familiar face when you’re walking down the street. His kids often usher him along when he tries to stop and shoot the breeze with old friends.

“I’ve lived here 61 years,” Cheshareck said. “If I didn’t have any friends here, I would

have to be a pretty sorry individual.”

For the Thanksgiving meal, Cheshareck and his family are heading to his brother-inlaw’s. Being on the cusp of the holiday made him recall the Thanksgiving he and his family were gathered around the turkey. Fully aware it takes a long time to cook on the grill, they snacked on little pieces of the seasoned skin, full of flavor, as they waited. The skinfor-all was so advanced, the turkey barely had any left – at which point it was labeled “the

naked turkey.”

Kernc’s plans were different. She said that when she left work Wednesday, she was going to start cooking to prepare for Thursday.

“I keep getting calls from people asking if they can come over,” she said. “We started small and we’re up to about 20 to 25 people now. I tell them, ‘Come on over, I’ll just cook more food.’”

Kopczick plans to be in the kitchen as well, making good use of a 10-pound sack of potatoes.

Lisbon bridge opens before Thanksgiving Only finishing touches, sidewalks remain

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Lisbon Road bridge in Morris opened about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said he was happy to hear from Fire Marshal Bob Coleman that the bridge had opened and met the Illinois Department of Transportation target date of Thanksgiving.

“I have not traversed it yet, but I will when I head home tonight,” Kopczick said.

Construction will still be taking care of dirt work, including the seeding and blanketing, as well as finishing the sidewalks, curbs and gutters the city of Morris decided to have done north and south of the bridge.

IDOT started demolition of the bridge in late April as part of a $3.09 million reconstruction project, and it has been closed since mid-April.

IDOT is the regulating authority of the Lisbon Road bridge and is paying for the project.

The old bridge was in place since 1958, and it was determined through IDOT’s periodic review and inspection process that it needed to be replaced.

Clearance for I-80 drivers passing beneath the new Lisbon Road bridge will be 17 feet, 3 inches, while the two lanes on the bridge will be 15 feet wide, increased from 11 feet in each lane.

A sidewalk is being added to the east side of the bridge.

OBITUARIES Born: March 6, 1929; in Kirksville, MO Died: Nov. 22, 2015; in Yorkville, IL Rosalie (Rose) L. Nelson, age 86, of Newark, passed Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 2015, at the Hillside Rehabilitation & Care Center.

Rose was born March 6, 1929, in Kirksville, Missouri to E. Lynn and Marjie (Martin) Myers. While in high school, her family moved from Missouri to Morris and she graduated from Morris High School in 1947.

She was a graduate of the Joliet School of Cosmetology and was a licensed beautician for over 60 years.

Rose married Ivan M. Nelson Nov. 8, 1952, in Morris. Ivan passed Nov. 7, 2009. Rose owned and operated the Newark Beauty Salon in their home until her retirement in the early 1990s.

She enjoyed sewing and in later years taking weekly classes with her daughter Phyllis and sister Lenore to learn the art of porcelain doll making. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed her travels with the family.

She is survived by her son, Fred Nelson of Newark; her daughter, Phyllis (Richard) Johnson of Newark; her step daughter, Nancy (William) Bercott of Pace, Florida; her step grandchildren, Angela (Michael) Dees of Pace, Florida.

Morris shoppers continue deal search online for holiday gifts

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – To Morris moms Tracie Voitik and Christi Punke, standing in line outside a large store in the early morning hours of Black Friday simply isn’t worth any deal.

Neither is waiting in line on Thanksgiving, which appears to be the new trend as stores nationwide – such as Best Buy at 5 p.m. and WalMart at 6 p.m. – crack open their doors before the dinner dishes are done. Voitik said it’s wrong for stores to open just for sales on Thursday.

“I don’t think a shopping deal on Thanksgiving can beat spending time with your family and friends,”

she said. “No deal can beat that.”

Voitik has done some Black Friday shopping in the past, but drew the line at Thanksgiving shopping.

Although she has scored good deals on electronics, she said it’s time for a change.

“The biggest challenge was dealing with the crowds,” Voitik said. “It can get claustrophobic. You also have to go in with a specific purpose and plan of what you want to get.”

Punke said she’s only shopped in person for Black Friday deals once, and she didn’t enjoy it.

“My thought was, online shopping is so much easier,” Punke said.

In fact, with advancements in advertisement technology, such as the Black Friday app for iOS and Android phones, users can be updated frequently on the latest deals.

“I was looking at wireless Beats headphones and found a pretty good deal,” Punke said. “With electronics, we go through different sites and compare prices and shipping.”

Both are pursuing the best deals they can find online as most retailers began sending sale ads in emails early in the week, they said.

Because of this, there are plenty of ways around having to wait in line.

“We usually do most of our shopping online,” Punke said. “From Black Friday to Cyber Monday.”

Sunset Club subdivision annexed into Minooka

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Residents of the Sunset Club subdivision in unincorporated Grundy County now will be able to call Minooka home with the passage Tuesday of a long-awaited annexation agreement with the village.

The subdivision is a little-known development along the DuPage River in Channahon Township just northeast of River Knoll subdivision.

It’s been there since the 1940s, said resident Bruce Robinson.

The 32 acres were purchased by the residents as a corporation and each resident owned a share of the corporation and their building, but not the property, Robinson said.

In order to subdivide the property, allowing each resident to own their own parcel of land, the property had to be annexed into the village.

“The time came that we needed to own our own properties,” Robinson said. “We

are not changing anything.”

The subdivision consists of 15 property owners. About half are full-time residents and half own cabins used for recreation.

The annexation agreement, rezoning the subdivision to R1 with a conditional use permit and the final plat, were approved Tuesday by village trustees.

Trustee Rudy Martin was absent.

Mayor Pat Brennan’s vote was needed to authorize the annexation agreement since it required corporate authority.

A public hearing was held regarding the annexation prior to the vote and no comments were made.

Robinson thanked trustees for their patience in the long, drawn-out process.

Horrie’s 35 points lead G-SW past Coal City

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – For most of the game Tuesday night, Coal City’s boys basketball team was in control against Gardner-South Wilmington in the Coal City Turkey Tournament.

That’s when G-SW’s Scott Horrie took control. The senior guard led the Panthers to a 56-53 win.

Horrie finished with a game-high 35 points and helped lead G-SW back from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

Horrie hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth, the second tying the game at 46.

He later made a pair of free throws with 31.2 seconds left to put his team ahead for good at 54-53, and made 1-of-2 foul shots on the next two trips down the floor to ice the win.

All told, he went 11 of 13 from the free-throw line.

“Scott is always a special player for us, but he was extra special tonight,” G-SW coach Chris Gibson said. “He’s a three-year starter and averaged 29.5 minutes a game last year. Not only was he creating his own shot tonight, but he created shots for others as well as playing very good defense on [Coal City’s Nick] Micetich.

“That’s not easy, because Micetich is very active, so Scott had to spend a lot of energy on defense, then come down and run the offense. For him to do that and finish with 35 points, including 11 of 13 on free throws, is just huge.”

Horrie’s big night offset a 21-point performance from Coal City’s Collin Hundley.

Hundley was 5 of 5 from the floor in the third quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers, as the Coalers built a 40-35 lead heading into the fourth.

“We played a great second half Monday in our win against Serena,” Coal City coach Keith Kiper said. “We didn’t do much great tonight.

We had a few spurts, and we got up by nine in the fourth quarter, but we need to learn how to finish out games.

Horrie opened the scoring with a basket for G-SW, but Coal City scored the next eight points and eventually led, 10-5, at the end of the first quarter.

Horrie then scored 12 points in the second quarter for G-SW as the Panthers pulled to within 20-19 at halftime.

Hundley’s hot hand in the third led Coal City to a 40-35 lead heading into the fourth.

With the game tied at 32, Micetich (9 points) hit a 3-pointer with 1:02 to play in the quarter and Hundley got a steal and a layup 20 seconds later.

Hundley ended the quarter with a 3 of his own.

Hundley continued his scoring barrage early in the fourth, making four straight free throws to give Coal City a 44-35 lead before Horrie put the Panthers on his back.

The senior guard made a pair of free throws, then found Bunna open for a 3-pointer. Af-

ter a free throw by Hundley, Horrie hit a 3-pointer.

That scenario then repeated itself, and the game was tied at 46 before Walker Eutsey (9 points, 11 rebounds) scored on a putback to put G-SW ahead, 48-46. G-SW extended the lead to 51-47 before Micetich scored with 2:00 left for Coal City.

points) then made a basket with 1:28 to play and another with :55 to go, putting Coal City ahead, 53-51.

With 36.9 seconds left, Coal City missed two free throws, but Micetich got the rebound.

Horrie then stole a pass and was fouled and made both of his free throws to put the Panthers ahead, 54-53, with 31.2 seconds left.

Horrie made 1 of 2 free throws twice in the final 10 seconds to seal the win.

“We had a tough loss Monday against Morris,” Gibson said. “We expected to play better in that game. This game was high intensity all the way through, and you need games like that in order to be successful. Even though Scott is a three-year starter, we have a young team. This is a game that really helps a young team like ours.”

Chicago’s locker room: Week 12

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears’ offensive line should be angry when kickoff occurs at Lambeau Field Thursday night. What else would you expect from five 300-plus pound men being deprived of their favorite Thanksgiving meals?

Not intending to anger them further, I asked Chicago’s “big uglies” – I didn’t make it up! – which foods they enjoy the most on America’s most gluttonous holiday. From left to right, here’s what they shared.

Charles Leno: “Sweet potato pie. My uncle, before he passed, he made the best. But the best right now would probably go to my auntie.”

Matt Slauson: “Stuffing.

Doesn’t get any better than stuffing. My wife has a great sausage stuffing that is just unreal. I don’t know how she does it, but it’s just amazing.”

Hroniss Grasu: “I usually like to mix everything all together; everything that you could possibly think of. And then end with dessert. Pumpkin pie with vanilla ice cream.

You can’t beat it.”

Patrick Omameh: “Mac and cheese. I like a few additions.

I add bacon, some diced jalapenos; it’s got like five cheeses.

Oh yeah, it’s intense.”

Kyle Long: “Something I’m not eating at a hotel. But my Mom’s sweet potatoes, or candied yams. They’re best the day after, because you get them in the Tupperware and they’ve got the melted butter all hardened.”

If ever there was a day for second helpings, here it is.

Shea McClellin: “I love all the food, man. I’m not picky. I like the rolls, probably the best.

The Hawaiian rolls. I love the turkey sandwich leftovers.”

Eddie Goldman: “I’d have to say mac and cheese.”

Matt Forte: “My wife’s dressing, for the cornbread.”

100-yard club: Marquess Wilson has been called a lot of things in various scouting re-

ports: long strider, high-pointer, quick in and out of breaks, loose-hipped, etc.

After his first career 100yard day, in which Wilson was Jay Cutler’s best friend because he found open space after Cutler escaped the pocket for several big, off-schedule plays, Wilson added another adjective: sneaky.

“When you see your quarterback break the pocket, you just got to get in his vision and hope he sees you,” said Wilson.

“That’s just a race for everybody, because you want to be the guy who gets open first.”

But how did Wilson get behind the NFL’s No. 1 “D” boasting a pair of Pro Bowl corners, including one he beat twice in Aqib Talib?

“I’m just sneaky, man,” Wilson said while flashing a big smile.

Wilson admitted his big day didn’t mean much personally because it came in a losing effort. For a former seventh-rounder who entered the league with questions about his ability to assimilate into a team, it’s another example of Wilson’s growth, on and off the field.

“I feel good,” Wilson said of his improvement in Year Three. “I’m happy with the progress we’ve all made and we just got to continue to build on that.”

Grasu’s goal: Hroniss Grasu will see his third former firstround nose guard Thursday night in only his fourth NFL start. What does Grasu need to do against B.J. Raji after Raji controlled the line of scrimmage in his best game last week?

“Obviously he’s a very talented player; big load, heavy guy,” Grasu said. “Even for his size, he’s very quick. I got to make sure I’m on point and very physical with my leverage and hand placement. Win the fight at the line; don’t let him gain any momentum, because when he does with his size and speed, it’ll be a big load to carry, especially on the bull rush.”

That is true about this deal. Yesterday, South had to make four spades doubled after West led the heart ace and shifted to the club king. Now, though, we turn to West. That defense did not work. What does?

Over West’s first double, North followed the Law of Total Tricks, bidding in a competitive auction to the four-level with a known 10-card fit. In my opinion, responder should have a singleton or void; balanced hands have too many losers. But at this vulnerability, a little latitude would be acceptable.

When West doubled again to promise extra strength, East might have bid to the five-level. Note that five hearts is defeated only if South gets a club ruff.

Yesterday, South won trick two with the club ace, carefully ruffed a club in his hand, and after eliminating (ruffing away) the rounded suits, threw in West with his spade king for an endplay.

Although that is hard to see, it cannot cost West to lead a second high heart at trick two. He has both minors under control, and a club trick isn’t running away. Also, if South has a singleton club, leading a second heart will disrupt the timing for the endplay.

Try it yourself, and you will see that the contract is now unmakable.

Congratulations if you saw that defense, especially if you did yesterday.

Take precautions when trying a home pedicure Dear Dr. K: Last time I got a pedicure, I ended up with toenail fungus. I’m not taking another chance. Any advice for an at-home, do-it-yourself pedicure?

Dear Reader: A pedicure is a great way to pamper your feet. But salons don’t always maintain the best safety standards, and that can lead to infection.

If you’re determined to try a do-it-yourself (DIY) pedicure, pick up a basic pedicure kit at your local pharmacy. Then follow these directions: • Fill a pan or basin with warm water.

• Soak your feet for a few minutes, until the skin and nails soften.

• Dry your feet with a towel.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Gently rub a pumice stone against your skin to remove any dead skin cells.

Don’t rub too hard.

• Take care of the cuticles.

Rub lotion or oil onto your toenails to soften the thin layer of skin at the bottom and sides of your toenail. Gently push the cuticles back to the base of the nails, using an orange stick or a moist washcloth. Don’t cut the cuticles; that could lead to infection.

• Clean underneath your nails with an orange stick wrapped in cotton or soaked in water to soften the edge.

• Cut your toenails

straight across with toenail clippers, or make a series of small snips with nail scissors. Smooth the edges with an emery board.

• Gently apply foot lotion to your feet. If you are going to apply nail polish, wipe off excess lotion with a cotton ball soaked with rubbing alcohol.

• Apply nail polish. Use foam separators or cotton balls to separate your toes.

Then apply the polish. Allow each coat to dry for several minutes.

• Scrub metal tools, such as toenail clippers, with soap and water. Then disinfect them with rubbing alcohol, Lysol or peroxide. Clean the basin the same way.

The problem with DIY pedicures is that, particular-

ly as we get older and stiffer, it can be hard to do meticulous work on your own feet.

So before you commit to the DIY route, I’d suggest you consider giving nail salons another try – while holding them to certain standards.

Make sure: • The pedicurist sterilizes reusable instruments for at least 10 minutes in a disinfectant solution.

• The instruments have been stored in a clean, dry container.

• Devices like whirlpool foot baths that are shared by clients are routinely disinfected after each use.

• The pedicurist does not file corns or calluses or use any sharp instrument on your feet.

If the pedicurist uses dis-

posable instruments (many do), then obviously some of the above is irrelevant.

Another alternative is for you to bring your own instruments to the pedicurist, after having sterilized them with alcohol.

If this advice seems a little “pushy,” just explain you’ve had some bad experiences with pedicures and you’re simply being careful. The pedicurist should understand, or at least not get defensive and angry. Unless, of course, he or she was the pedicurist with whom you had the bad experience.

These proposed Contract Documents may be studied at the office of the Architect or at the following locations: Contractors Association of Will and Grundy Counties Plan Room 233 N. Springfield Avenue, Joliet, Illinois These documents may also be viewed online at the McGraw-Hill Construction - Dodge internet site at www.dodge.construction.com.

Bids will be received on General Contract Work, including all trades.

BIDDER RESPONSIBILITY Each Bidder must satisfactorily complete the Bidder Responsibility process described in Section 01000, Bidder Responsibility Criteria of the Project Manual by providing the required Documents.

In the case of a joint venture or partnership, each joint venturer or partner must independently meet each of the requirements set forth in Paragraphs 1.02, 1.03, 1.04 and 1.05 in Section 01000 - Bidder Responsibility Criteria.

The required Documents must be delivered along with the bidder's sealed bid at the same place and time required for the bid. Contents of each bidder's Responsibility Criteria Documents will be available for public review.

The Bidder Responsibility Documents will be reviewed by the Owner and Architect to determine the lowest responsible Bidder.
