Born: Jan. 30, 1920; in Morris, IL Died: Nov. 24, 2014; in Morris, IL Leonard J. Bols, age 94, of Aux Sable Twp., Minooka, passed away November 24, 2014, at Park Pointe in Morris.

Born Jan. 30, 1920, in Morris, Leonard was a son of the late John and Catherine (Broderick) Bols. On Feb. 14, 1944, Leonard married Winona Davies in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris. Together they farmed and raised their family in the rural Morris and Minooka area. Leonard farmed his entire life, and early on raised registered Holstein dairy cattle. Thereafter he focused on grain farming with his son until retiring.

Leonard was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Minooka, The Minooka Lions Club, and in years past belonged to the Pure Milk Association. He served on the Grundy County Board for 28 years, where he was both chairman and vice chairman for many years. Leonard worked on various committees during his tenure, and will be most remembered for being chairman of the Grundy County Building Commission, which designed and oversaw the construction of the current Grundy County Administrative Building. A very civic minded man, Leonard also served as Aux Sable Township Supervisor for 36 years and was a former board member with the Grundy County Farm Bureau. In his free time, Leonard bowled on a Monday night league, loved to dance

and play cards, and took pleasure in golf and woodworking.

Survivors include his children, Kathy (Dan) Friant and Bernie (Debbie) Bols, both of Minooka and Kim Schaefer of Morris; (8) grandchildren, Jeff (Amy) Friant of Naperville, Kristin (Peter) Thomas of Schaumburg, Dave (Becca) Bols of Channahon, Kelly (Trent) Olson of Morris, Ryan Schaefer of Milwaukee, Nick Schaefer (Nicole Bromberek) of Mazon, Alan Schaefer of New York, NY and Brittany Schaefer of St Louis; (8) great grandchildren, Moira, Keegan and Keira Friant, Ellie and Owen Thomas and Mason, Caleb and Norah Bols; one sister, Eleanor (the late Keith) Jackson of Manteno; and one brother, Edwin (Ruth) Bols of Morris, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Winona on May 7, 2014; and two sisters, Frances (Howard) Clennon and Kathleen (Robert) Lawrence.

Visitation and video tribute will be Friday, November 28th between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 E. Washington St. in Morris (815-942-2500). Funeral services will follow Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 303 W. St. Mary’s St. in Minooka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Tuan Van Nguyen officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Minooka.

Pallbearers will be Leonard’s grandchildren: Jeff Friant, Kristin Thomas, Dave Bols, Kelly Olson, Ryan Schaefer, Nick Schaefer, Alan Schaefer and Brittany Schaefer. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Thomas and Rob Craig.

BRUCE H. DERBY Born: Oct. 28, 1950; in Tuscola, IL Died: Nov. 24, 2014; in Morris, IL Bruce H. Derby, age 64, of Morris, passed away Monday afternoon, November 24, 2014, at Morris Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris, with Rev. Robert Noesen officiating. Interment will follow in Villa Grove Cemetery in Villa Grove, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Friday at the funeral home.

Born on October 28, 1950, in Tuscola, Illinois, he was the son of Phillip and Beverly (Bane) Derby. He graduated from Villa Grove High School with the class of 1969, and later attended Joliet Junior College. Bruce married Martha Diane Walker, and she preceded him in 1988. Later he

married Joyce Meador, and they lived all of their married life in Coal City.

After 20 plus years , he retired from Lyondell Chemical Company.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce of Mazon; five sons, Michael(Angela) Derby of Poplar, MO, Matthew (Carolyn) Derby of Coal City, IL, Dustin (Sara) Derby of Davenport, IA, Chad Derby of Scottsborro, AL and Johnny Crum of Versailles, IL; two daughters, Rachael (Phillip) Hargis of Cincinnati, OH and Melanie (Lucas) Lammers of St. Peters, MO; step-mother, Kay Derby of KY; sixteen, grandchildren, Andrew Kendall, Cory, Samantha, Ashley, Shannon, Jordan, Alexis and Madison Derby, Bobby, Bryan and Brandan Smith and Casey and Harley Hargis and Evan Lammers, Emmalyssa and Ivan Crum; three great grandchildren, Ashton, Henry and Kaysen; three sisters, Connie Buberle, Bernita Barbarka and Debbie Darnell; two brothers, Phillip Derby Jr. and Eric Derby; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 967 in Morris.

Bruce was a fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs, enjoyed cooking, drawing, golfing, woodworking, fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Moosehart.

Play It Again Video owner retiring

More than three decades later, Drake is closing shop and retiring from the business she said has introduced her to people from all over the world who have come in to rent the latest movie or video game.

“I’m not going to miss the long hours, but I will miss the people terribly,” Drake said. “I met some of the nicest, coolest

Riley stood holding “Ghost Riders” that he was prepared to rent for the weekend when he heard the news. He gave his grandmother a look, and she asked if he’d like to buy the movie.

Daugherty said renting was the best option for her family because where they live, “out in the middle of nowhere,” they can’t stream videos like those with faster Internet connections can.

Riley and Liam both walked out with their purchases and a handful of candy to take back to their grandparents’ home.

Daugherty wished Drake well as they said goodbye.

Drake said when the video chain stores started moving into towns, a lot of the family-owned businesses didn’t survive.

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – After two years of waiting, the Illinois Commerce Commission approved Tuesday the Rock Island Clean Line project to construct its energy transmission line in Illinois.

On Nov. 13, the ICC put off voting on the project until Tuesday. The approval allows Rock Island Clean Line to construct and operate an electric transmission line. The company applied in October 2012.

“Although the transmission line is the first ‘merchant’ project, or self-financed project, approved by the ICC, the commission found the project has the potential to bring substantial benefits to Illinois

ratepayers,” according to a news release from the ICC. The full ICC ruling was not immediately available Tuesday.

Rock Island Clean Line has proposed constructing a $300 million converter station in Grundy County.

The station would be the end point for a 500-mile direct current energy transmission line that would cut through numerous Illinois and Iowa farms, including some within Grundy County.

The line would pipe wind energy from Iowa to Grundy County, where the energy could be converted into alternate current electricity and injected into the power grid, servicing Chicago and the East Coast.

Clean Line will recover the

costs of construction, operation and maintenance solely from revenue from transmission customers who purchase capacity on the system rather than through a traditional cost of service approach, according to the ICC’s news release.

The ICC order ensures Clean Line secures funds that cover total project costs before constructing facilities, according to the ICC news release. It also prohibits any project expansion without ICC approval.

Seneca High School alum shares Naval Academy experience

By GEORGE LAMBOLEY Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – Seneca Township High School’s auditorium became a beacon Monday morning to students interested in joining and supporting the United State’s Armed Forces.

Luke Jackson, a senior at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, spoke to several young adults about their plans and opportunities.

Sporting a freshly shaved head and formal Navy attire, Jackson chatted with interested students. Jackson, a 2011 graduate of Seneca High School, shared a few positive experiences from his time in the Naval Academy, as well as educational videos and literature.

“For me, one of the best things to come out of my experience has been the friends I have made,” Jackson said. “I still have really close friends back here, but the group of guys in my squad have become like brothers to me.

There’s a certain level of understanding we share because of the experiences and suffering we’ve all endured together.”

Jackson explained the candidate cycle and admission process, which includes tests of mental and physical fortitude as well as nomination by members of state and federal government.

“The academy is very physically and mentally demanding; however, making it through freshman year was an extremely rewarding expe-

rience for me,” Jackson said.

“It’s a big adjustment, and making it through felt really good and was a big deal for me.”

Students could ask about day-to-day schedules while attending the academy, application requirements and other aspects of the process, from being accepted to graduation.

“The Navy really likes to have well-rounded individuals,” Jackson said. “They don’t just look for people who are athletic or intellectual. It helps to have a wide skill set, and the academy looks to give that to people.”

Student Samuel Mitchell attended the meeting and left with a new outlook on Maryland’s Naval Academy, as well as his future with the Armed Forces.

“It was cool to get to hear someone from our area that made it through the program,” he said. “It makes it seem a little more real.”

Jackson, a history major, will graduate in the spring with a bachelor’s of science because of the extra programs and training offered by the

academy. Jackson recently was commissioned as a second lieutenant for the Marines, to continue his service.

“The service aspect of the Navy is what drew me in the most,” Jackson said. “It’s really exciting to have these great options and possibilities for the future.”

Born July 6, 1959, in Morris, Ron is the son of the late Robert Marx and Ellen (Lynch) Marx. He was raised and educated in Morris, graduating with the Class of ‘77 from Morris High School. He was married to Barb (Neal) Siegel.

Ron served in law enforcement as

Ron also was part of the Naperville Fire Department Fire Investigation Team where he assisted in determining the cause and origin of dozens of fires. In addition, Ron is known for his work with the Naperville Fire Department Public Education team where his luminous personality was a perfect fit for interacting with the public. Those that knew Ron the best will attest to the fact that he was a true leader and that he mentored many Firefighter/Paramedics as they grew in their knowledge and love for the profession and

Committee approves amended resolution

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County might be able to pay off bonds it issued in 2008 with a one-time payment, thanks to a proposed amendment to a resolution adopted in 2011.

The resolution requires a referendum approval for county projects using Public Building Commission bond financing.

Finance Committee members unanimously approved at Monday’s meeting amending the resolution. It is set to go before the full County Board on Dec. 9 for approval.

Ron Severson, County Board chairman, said a referendum will still be required for Grundy County to borrow money to construct buildings.

The amendment changes the language in the resolution to allow the county to refinance bonds.

“This is a way to allow us to lower the interest cost,” Severson said prior to Monday’s Finance Committee meeting.

John Galloway, chairman of the Finance Committee, said the amendment would limit the Public Building Commission’s authority to issue bonds and would allow the county to make a payment on bond debt without input from taxpayers.

“The way it’s worded, prior to the amendment, wouldn’t allow us to do a one-time payment on bonds,” Galloway said Tuesday. “We won’t have to go to taxpayers and ask them if it’s OK for us to make the pay down.”

Committee members also approved putting $1.65 million in cash contributions toward bond debt.

“We’re going to reduce the debt we pay by $1.4 million,” Galloway said Tuesday.

Dick Joyce, committee member, said he thinks allowing the refunding of bonds is a good idea, but that Monday’s discussion about it should’ve never happened.

Wilmington man arrested on animal cruelty charges cchapman@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – A Wilmington man was arrested Friday on warrant charges of animal cruelty.

Wesley Majka, 43, of Wilmington, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty, both class A misdemeanors, and one count of failure to provide humane care and treatment

to an animal, a class B misdemeanor, according to a news release from Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Department was called Thursday to Pine Bluff Animal Hospital in Morris by an Animal Control officer, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Tuesday. A report was filed due to wounds a dog had received.

sheriff’s department discovered Majka was the dog’s owner.

According to judici.com, an Animal Control Officer testified in court Friday and then a warrant was issued for Majka’s arrest.

Majka posted bond after his arrest. He was given a court date for 9:30 a.m. Dec. 15.

Court documents allege Majka treated a mastiff dog cruelly between Nov. 7 and Nov. 15.

“I think this was ill-advised to start with. The public doesn’t vote on the budget,” Joyce said at the meeting. “Do we have to have a public vote every time we change the carpet? It’s ridiculous.”

Bonds issued in 2008 were used for various county projects, such as the construction of a facility for the Highway Department, renovations to the Grundy County Courthouse, construction of a new facility for the Animal Control Department, the construction of a parking lot and a new 911 center.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Let’s face it: The typical Thanksgiving dinner is too high in calories, refined carbohydrates and fat – especially for the weight conscious and those with diabetes and heart disease.

But, Liz Baker, outpatient dietitian at Morris Hospital, said it’s important to keep the holiday meal in perspective.

“Thanksgiving is one meal out of one day each year,” Baker said. “So while we don’t want to completely splurge and fill up the whole plate, it’s OK to have some of those traditional family recipes we look forward to the whole year.”

What some people will do when anticipating a feast, Baker said, is skip a couple of the preceding meals, assuming that helps even out the calories.

Baker doesn’t recommend this practice, since it will usually make the diner ravenous by mealtime, which often leads to overeating.

A much better idea is to eat a small breakfast (as well as a small lunch, if dinner is late in the day) and then take modest portions, Baker said. Stepping up one’s exercise routine on the days before and after Thanksgiving helps to quickly burn off those extra calories, she added.

Baker said one easy way to take modest portions of higher-fat foods is to divide your dinner plate, as is shown at www. choosemyplate.gov. Fill half with non-starchy vegetables, one quarter with grains and the remaining with lean proteins.

Such tactics keeps people – whose diets may or may not be stellar the rest of the year – from feeling deprived during the holidays, which Baker discourages.

“I would never tell people they can’t have Christmas cookies again,” Baker said. “People should be able to enjoy those foods.”

Baker offered the following tips for giving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner a healthy upgrade:

• Turkey – Cook only the breast and don’t eat the skin.

• Mashed potatoes – Skip the potatoes and mash cauliflower in fat-free or 1 percent milk.

• Green bean casserole – Roast fresh green beans in olive oil and top with sliced almonds.

• Cornbread casserole – Roast the corn or skip the corn and roast squash or zucchini.

Still set on cornbread? Prepare with canola oil instead of margarine or butter and use saltfree corn.

• Cranberry sauce – Adding citrus zest or a splash of orange juice to fresh cranberries enhances flavor and reduces the amount of sugar that is needed.

• Rolls – Unless the bread is a family recipe, skip the bread, or made from whole grains.

• Stuffing – Use whole wheat bread, moisten with low-salt or salt-free broth instead of drippings and increase the amount of onions and celery used.

• Sweet potatoes – Slice sweet potatoes, bake and season with cinnamon.

• Pumpkin pie – Make without a crust and eat a small slice.

The Big Bird gets all the attention on Thanksgiving.

But the supporting roles for this dinnertime drama are just as important and (dare we suggest?) can serve as the real stars of this once-a-year occasion.

• CLEAN LINE Continued from page 4 Group co-founder Mary Mauch said in the news release that in order for the company to use eminent domain, it would have to prove need.

“This is a significant issue, as [Clean Line] would have to go back to the ICC in a new petition in which their failure to prove ‘need’ could be a deciding factor in whether or not [Clean Line] would have the right of eminent domain,” Mauch said.

Kurt said Clean Line did not apply for eminent domain authority, so the ICC’s order did not address it.

Grundy County Board Chairman Ron Severson said he doesn’t believe the project can move forward without eminent domain.

“They’re going to have to have eminent domain, and I don’t think they will get it.

There is no way they can cross 500 miles without it,” he said.

“Personally, I’m not in favor of this project,” Severson continued.

Clean Line stated in its release it will provide easement

payments and structure payments to landowners that can be made annually or up-front, at the landowner’s option, plus any damage payments.

Earlier this month the Grundy County Board approved an abatement of property taxes between Rock Island Clean Line and the county.

The company also has agreements with area schools.

The Grundy Economic Development Council has been a proponent of the $2 billion project and the economic benefits could bring. Nancy Norton Ammer, CEO of the GEDC, did not immediately return calls Tuesday.

Next steps The next big step for the transmission line is to get approval in Iowa. Clean Line put in its application in Iowa earlier this month and does not expect a decision for about a year, Kurt said.

If it receives approval in 2015, Clean Line hopes to begin construction in 2016 and be operational by 2018, she said.

Give thanks for your blessings Charles Dickens once wrote: “Reflect on your present blessings, on which every man has many, not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”

Some people joyfully welcome Thanksgiving as the start of an eagerly anticipated holiday season, and can quickly and easily tick off many reasons to be thankful. Others, often through circumstances not of their making, find even cracking a smile hard to do, and relate more to Dickens’ Scrooge than the above quote.

Research suggests that simply being thankful can help one find that smile. In her 2008 book, “The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want,” psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky found that simply counting one’s blessings – either privately or through expressions of appreciation to others – actually created happy feelings.

Moreover, a study reported in the 2003 edition of the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” said people who focused on gratitude and the positive forces in their lives had greater well-being. These individuals were not only happier, they were healthier and had tighter social bonds.

Perhaps the Pilgrims were onto something.

As one might guess, ship travel across the Atlantic Ocean in 1620 was less than pleasant; yet once the Pilgrims arrived at their destination, they offered thanks, even though two of their members had died and most were sick. By the end of their first winter on American soil, half of that original group had died.

Yet, after their first harvest a year later, they celebrated for three days, despite hardships, loss of loved ones and the fact they were dining on unfamiliar foods with strangers in a new land.

If you’re still coming up short on blessings and reasons for gratitude, consider this: We live in a country that sets aside – as a national holiday – 24 hours once a year just to give thanks.

Now that is a blessing to count.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

State Supreme Court holds future of Illinois SPRINGFIELD – A Sangamon County judge just snapped the first buckle on the state’s straight jacket last week.

Despite this, expect Illinois’ leaders to struggle to deal with the state’s crushing pension debt.

Circuit Judge John Belz ruled that a plan championed by House Speaker Mike Madigan and Gov. Pat Quinn was unconstitutional. The measure will almost certainly be next considered by the state Supreme Court.

At issue is whether the state can reduce retirement benefits for future work performed by government workers.

Faced with more than $111 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, Illinois is in the worst fiscal condition of any state.

And Belz’s ruling sets the stage for the crisis to deepen.

While government worker unions were touting the ruling as a victory, it’s actually sowing despair for

If the high court upholds this ruling, tax dollars that would be go to support schools, prisons and other state services will be diverted to fund pensions.

Look for teachers, prison guards and other state workers to receive pink slips to free up money for increased pension payments.

Who else but government workers routinely retire in their 50s, have guaranteed cost of living adjustments and pensions guaranteed to grow until the day they die?

Not most of us in the private sector, that’s for sure.

Things won’t be pretty during the 2015 legislative session, which begins in January.

Don’t be surprised if deep cuts are made in

state spending, less money flows to schools, and more government workers head toward the unemployment line.

And things could get worse when summer comes.

That’s when the labor contract with the largest state workers union expires.

One should expect Governor-elect Bruce Rauner to demand wage concessions.

It’s simple math.

With more money going to pensions, less will be available for wages and other benefits.

Of course, the Illinois Supreme Court could rule that the crisis is so extreme that the state’s emergency powers allow it to reshape pensions on their own.

Just how severe is the crisis?

If all of state government were to shut down and its entire operating budget were diverted to fund pensions, Illinois pensions would still be in the hole three years from now.

Now, that’s a crisis.

Will the state Supreme Court see it as a sufficient crisis for the state to exercise its “police power” or “reserved sovereign power” to diminish pension benefits?

That’s the $111 billion question.

Gov. Pat Quinn says he is confident they will.

And when the measure was debated before the House of Representatives, Mike Madigan said the same.

And that’s what his daughter Attorney General Lisa Madigan is arguing.

It’s also the position held by the Republican leaders in the General Assembly.

So what will the High Court decide?

The future of Illinois depends on it.

Coal City gets hyped up before the first half of the Class 4A semifinal game Saturday against Phillips at Gately Stadium in Chicago. who did the Coalers turn to?

None other than Dibble, who responded with three touchdown runs, the last with 31 seconds left.

Instead of kicking the extra point and playing for overtime, the Coal City coaching staff made the gutsy call of going for two and the win. With everyone in the John Dzuris Athletic Complex expecting Dibble to get the ball again, they faked it to him and gave

it to Corey Jurzak, who went in for the decisive points and put the Coalers into the state semifinals for the sixth time.

There were other moments in which Dibble shined, such as the game against Lisle in which he had four touchdown runs of more than 50 yards and finished with 358 yards on 15 carries. Or the first-round playoff game against Mendota that saw his first carry go for a 63-yard touchdown.

But when asked about his favorite moment of the season, Dibble looks elsewhere.

“I don’t think my favorite moment of the year came on a Friday night,” he said. “My favorite moments, the things I will remember for the rest of my life, was hanging out with the guys as a team, whether we were watching films or just

hanging after practice. Those guys are like my family.”

A family that worked together to overcome adversity after adversity, and almost made it to the promised land.

CHICAGO – When the high school football season officially started way back on Aug. 11, I went out to visit Coal City’s team and talk with coach Lenny Onsen about the Coalers’ prospects for the season.

Since the Coalers had seen starting quarterback Brennan Shetina and top receiver Nick Peters graduate from the previous season’s team, there was a little concern about how the team was going to move the ball. There was promise, however, in the size of the offensive line and the hope that senior Jack Dibble could return to form after having ACL injuries the previous two seasons.

Hope did spring eternal for the Coalers in general and Dibble in particular. The front line of Andrew Mathena, Kurtis Smith, Matt Long, Alec Leasure and L.J. Lightner paved the way for Dibble to put up ridiculous, Madden-on-beginner-level, numbers.

Heading into Saturday’s Class 4A semifinal game against Chicago Phillips, Dibble had run for 2,528 yards and 32 touchdowns on 332 carries. He had 132 yards and, fittingly, the only touchdown on 34 carries in Saturday’s 26-6 loss to finish the season with 2,660 yards and 33 touchdowns on the ground in 13 games.

Along the way, he was front and center for some of the more memorable moments in Coal City history, including comeback wins against both Plano and Manteno that each defy logic.

The Coalers couldn’t get anything going offensively against Plano and trailed the Reapers 13-0. Then Long blocked a punt and the Coalers got some life. After quarterback Nick Micetich scored on a sneak after the blocked punt, he threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Dibble to give Coal City the lead.

As improbable as the win against Plano was, it was nothing compared to the playoff win against Manteno. Coal City trailed that game, 28-7, entering the fourth quarter.

NFL’s best run defense awaits Bears

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Often, when aggressive defensive lines get after the passer with such efficiency, they can be exploited by running the football.

Well, not the Lions.

Detroit’s front has dominated against the quarterback as well as the ballcarrier. The Lions have the NFL’s top run

defense, allowing a paltry 3.1 yards a carry. That’s not good news for a Bears team that hasn’t gotten the downfield passing game going all season and has relied so much on Matt Forte.

“They’ve penetrated the offense very well with their D-line, and then their linebackers are extremely aggressive,” offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said Tuesday.

“They’re not big, but they get off blocks and they get edges.

When they decide that you’re running in a certain hole, or their hole that they have to fit, they do a great job of dipping their shoulder and getting under people and getting into the backfield to make the tackle. It’s been rough sledding against them.”

The Internet comes to bridge magazines

CELEBRITY CIPHER

In the last 12 months, two bridge magazines have gone from printed editions to email versions. This greatly reduces costs and allows for a much bigger product. For example, the October edition of Bridge Magazine (bridgemagazine.co.uk) ran to 98 pages. And it appears monthly.

This problem was set by Julian Pottage in his “Test Your Defence” column.

Look at the West and North hands.

Against five diamonds, West led the spade king, asking partner to give count. (Against five clubs and higher, it is a good idea to play that an ace lead asks for attitude and a king lead requests count.) When East plays the two, it shows three (an odd number).

So West continues with the spade queen: 10, four, nine. What should West do next?

In the bidding, South’s two-notrump rebid was artificial, showing a weak three-club raise or weak three-diamond rebid.

Three spades was game-forcing, asking South to bid three no-trump with a spade stopper.

East’s second spade play was a suit-preference signal.

With the heart ace, he would have dropped his spade jack. His four showed the club queen. (If East has neither of those honors, the contract is unbeatable.)

If West shifts to, say, a heart, South takes the trick, cashes his diamond ace and queen, plays three rounds of clubs, ruffing the last high in his hand, leads a trump to dummy’s king and runs the clubs to get home.

However, if West continues with his spade ace at trick three, making dummy ruff, South must go down one.

I was raised in a family that emphasized good manners and to always be willing to help a friend. But in these situations I feel uncomfortable because I don’t want to refuse my host and I was invited as a “guest.”

Isn’t it rude for a host to ask a guest to help clean? If so, what would be the appropriate response? – Infringed
