Mayor to make appointment before 2016 “If appointed, I will listen

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Republican Central Committee announced Tuesday morning it is endorsing Matthew M. Brooks for appointment as alderman to fill the City Council vacancy in Morris’ Second Ward.

Matthew M. M i c h a e l Brooks Mattingly, chairman of the committee, said a caucus held Nov. 21 determined Brooks is an exceptional person for the job.

The caucus as a whole looked at a few key factors in Brooks’ interview, Mattingly said. What stood out was Brooks’ family longevity as a third-generation Morris resident, his service to the country – he was honorably discharged from the Navy – and his enthusiasm, which made him an ideal candidate, Mattingly said.

“With anything in life,

you have to put your best foot forward,” Brooks said.

“I want to do the best I can in everything.”

Brooks said he’s been considering taking a political step for a while. He said in his job as a detective for the village of Channahon, he is used to conducting thorough research and plans to carry that over to the council if he’s appointed.

“I think the city needs to be represented by someone who cares and is willing to do the work,” Brooks said.

One priority of Brooks’ is to maintain and improve upon the quality of life in Morris for his children.

“If appointed, I will listen to the concerns of the people in Ward Two and work with the mayor and the other aldermen to try and address those concerns,” Brooks said.

Mayor Richard Kopczick said he was made aware of the endorsement through Brooks himself, not the Republican Central Committee.

Mattingly said he intended to submit the endorsement letter later Tuesday.

According to state statute, the mayor has 60 days from Nov. 2, when former alderman Doug Hayse resigned, to make an appointment for the council to consider.

“All candidates will be considered,” Kopczick said.

Hayse resigned to devote more time to his family and business.

• Kristin D. Shannon, 25, of Morris, was arrested by Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies Saturday on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of hypodermic syringes and needles and possession of drug equipment. She also was cited for driving with a suspended license. She was booked into the Grundy County Jail and given a Dec. 21 court date.

• Daniel S. Bekavac, 32, of Minooka, was arrested by Channahon police Friday on a charge of domestic battery.

He was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

Shopkins, Calico Critters popular gifts for girls; video games remain hot items

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There are two things businesses can be sure of in regard to what most children want for Christmas.

First, they are convinced they can’t live without whatever is on their wish list. Second, the things they want change – often multiple times.

After Thanksgiving is a prime time for many to start their holiday shopping, and Americans are expected to spend more during the holidays. The median amount they expect to spend is $529 a person, up from $437 in the past year, according to Consumer Reports.

Hot gifts this year for kids include anything “Star Wars,” according to Hot Gift lists from Consumer Reports and Toys “R” Us and others, and the list also includes Barbies, LeapFrog items and Legos.

A toy line called Shopkins is all the rage in the world of 6-year-old, Abby, the daughter of Morris resident Megan Borchers. Apparently it is for others too: A Shopkins toy is

among the items on the “Fabulous 15! Toy List” from Toys “R” Us. Although Borchers admitted she hasn’t figured out the appeal of the line, she’ll likely be shopping for it.

“Shopkins are very strange little figurines,” Borchers said.

“They have different items, like a toaster, with this thing on the bottom that looks like a plug.

But I’m still not sure what they plug into.”

Borchers said she made a Facebook post recently confirming that other girls about Abby’s age are into Shop-

kins – and just like Borchers, other parents can’t figure it out.

“Other moms replied saying, ‘We don’t get it either,’” Borchers said. “It seems like young girls are just over the moon with these things.”

GIS Department approval to go to board

Grundy County will vote in December on creation of services separate from IT

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Finance Committee heard Monday of the need for a standalone Geographical Information Services Department and approved it with a 4-0 vote for a positive recommendation to the full County Board.

The recommendation made its way through the Technology Committee and the Personnel Committee before being discussed one more time in Finance.

“It’s the same plan and the

same guy running the show,” County Administrator Doug Pryor said Monday. “Our GIS Department is pretty much Dave’s creation.”

Dave Ostrander has been working in GIS for the county through the IT Department, but the services of GIS are used for several departments, including the assessor’s office and the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency. Pryor said creating a separate department seems like the next logical step.

He said creating the department and hiring a parttime employee to assist

Ostrander would save the county tens of thousands of dollars.

The county currently pays a contracted company for mapping services that cost on average $50,000 a year and in high-volume years has cost the county closer to $100,000.

The part-time employee would bring mapping work in-house that is contracted out, said Ostrander, who cur-

rently is the only employee working with GIS. The full board is expected to vote at the December board meeting on the separation of GIS to its own department.

The committee spoke with Ostrander privately at his request during closed session before he left so they could discuss his salary as the head of the new department.

Finance approved a salary

of $75,000 contingent upon the creation of the department.

Committee members also approved the creation of the part-time assistant position for Ostrander that will also go into effect once the full board votes on the matter.

The part-time position will be fewer than 20 hours a week and will be a non-IMRF and nonbenefit position, Pryor said.

Channahon D-17 puts pause on school closure

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The question of closing one of Channahon District 17’s four schools is off the table, for now, as school board members decided Monday to wait until next year’s enrollment numbers are in before making the decision.

At its second work-study session in two months devoted to school consolidation, the board listened to presentations by the district’s four principals.

The principals addressed building use and what changes would be necessary should Pioneer Path School, which houses students in third and fourth grades, be closed and

its pupils relocated to other district schools. Student enrollment has been dropping steadily for the past few years.

Closing one school would save costs in a number of areas and seemed the likely direction the district was headed.

However, this school year’s enrollment surprised the district with healthier-than-expected numbers.

Superintendent Nick Henkle, said in-district enrollment now stands at about 1,260, which is a decrease of about 500 students since 2008.

Several consolidation options were considered at the work-study session.

Should Pioneer Path School be shuttered, N.B. Galloway Principal Mary Kelly said the addition of third grade to

her school of kindergartners and first- and second-graders would require, among other things, an additional computer lab, more classroom space for special education resource rooms, an additional PE teacher who would be split with the Three Rivers School, additional aides for lunch and recess, more nurse hours, more custodial help and an increase in cafeteria server hours.

Some services could be eliminated too, Kelly said.

Three Rivers School Principal Susan Kavich explained the ramifications of the scenario where fourth grade would be added to her fifthand sixth-grade school.

Five classrooms would need to be remodeled to give more classroom space, she

said, and an additional computer lab would be needed.

More PE and other staff would be required, and additional parking spaces and possibly a playground update would be necessary.

If Channahon Junior High School were to add sixth grade to its seventh and eighth grades, Principal Chad Uphoff said an additional PE teacher and activities sponsors would be needed, as well as an additional computer lab, more space for special education, additional supervision nights and additional morning supervision.

A science lab would be closed at the junior high, Uphoff said.

Several board members reminded those present that with

the decrease of 500 students in recent years, the school’s students and staff have spread out over the schools’ emptying spaces.

It wouldn’t be that difficult to concentrate back in, they said.

It’s a matter of being responsible to the taxpayers, Pat Clower and a couple of other board members said, and to not waste tax dollars by unnecessarily keeping four schools open when three would do.

Dee Foreman was in favor of consolidation, especially with the impending remodel of N.B. Galloway to accommodate an extra grade.

“We’ve spent $1 million on a room,” Foreman said, “and it feels like nobody wants to pull the trigger.”

CHANNAHON – Channahon District 17 school board members voted Monday to adopt an estimated property-tax levy of $17.57 million, an increase of $169,600 from last year’s tax extension.

The levy was based on an estimated total equalized assessed valuation of $624.41 million.

Giving thanks and eating our food fill

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent Thanksgiving – the time each year when we gather with friends and loved ones and give thanks for all that we have, before eating into oblivion.

But is it OK to gorge ourselves on this holiday? Do we get one pass to binge eat without harming our health?

According to Dr. Zahid Afzal, a gastroenterologist affiliated with Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, said it depends on our baseline health.

The bad news

Occasional overeating might not cause negative longterm effects on a person who is healthy, although Afzal does advise moderation, even on holidays. But for those with health issues, indulging is not a good idea.

“Our body can handle little jolts now and then,” Afzal said, “but for people with chronic conditions, it can be harmful.”

A sudden bolus of salt, for example, can skyrocket the blood pressure of someone with even borderline hypertension. Many people don’t know they have hypertension, he said, and not accounting for sodium intake can be particularly dangerous for them.

“Their symptoms might get worse,” Afzal said, “and sometimes they turn up at the emergency room.”

A large meal full of carbohydrates and sugar can throw a diabetic whose blood sugars aren’t well-controlled into a state of hyperglycemia, which can lead to ketoacidosis, a potentially lethal situation, Afzal said.

Those with gallbladder problems also might find their condition exacerbated.

A heavy meal that kicks triglycerides to more than 500 milligrams a deciliter also can cause acute pancreatitis, Afzal said, which can be extremely painful.

For most people, however, Afzal said a one-time binge is not likely to cause any longterm effects. There are, of course, uncomfortable shortterm repercussions.

Overindulgers might find themselves bloated and gassy, and with heartburn or stomachaches.

But be careful, Afzal warned, of using Thanksgiving as an excuse for a couple of months of indulging. That can have consequences, especially around the waistline. Fat cells double when we gain weight, Afzal said, and those cells don’t die when the pounds drop. They decrease in size, but they do remain, making it easier to gain weight in the future.

“The key is to enjoy the meal, but do it in moderation,” Afzal said. “Have everything you want, but in moderation.”

Morris Hospital dietitian Kara Corsiglia offered some tips to help enjoy Thanksgiving without being miserable the rest of the day. One is to not sit down to the big meal starving.

“Make sure you still start the day with a well-balanced breakfast or lunch,” Corsiglia said.

Eating a small meal or snack before leaving for your holiday destination is a good idea, so as not to arrive famished.

Munching from the veggie tray is a nice way to snack while visiting with family and friends before the meal.

Corsiglia suggests volunteering to bring a fruit and veggie tray if one might not be available. Make it fun and delicious by splurging on such tidbits as cucumber-tomato appetizers with a little cream cheese and dill spread

on them.

“Most people these days are trying to watch what they take in,” Corsiglia said, “so you would be doing them a favor by bringing something lighter.”

But don’t overdo the before-meal munching. If you’re the cook, don’t sample too much of the food you’re preparing, Corsiglia advises.

Designate family members to taste-test for you.

Also, don’t hang around the table. It’s OK to physically walk away from the spread.

And if you’re the host, it’s fine to clear the table of the leftovers to prevent grazing.

Corsiglia suggested shifting the focus on the day away from food by incorporating some kind of movement. It’s a great way for everyone to burn calories and not feel groggy after the meal.

For instance, start a tradition of a family walk before or after the meal.

“Don’t use the holidays as an excuse to stop your exercise routine,” Corsiglia

Born: July 25,1944; in Granite City, IL Died: Nov. 23, 2015; in Joliet, IL Arthur F. Adcock “Art”, age 71, of Morris, passed away peacefully, Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born July 25, 1944, in Granite City, Illinois to the late Arthur and Constance Adcock.

A U.S. Army Veteran. Art had a passion for driving and truly enjoyed his career as an over the road truck driver.

He was also employed as a crane operator for the former F.J. Christiansen Roofing Company.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara (nee Boggs); and his parents. Survived by his longtime friend, and partner of nine years, Sandra (the late Jerry) Clark; children, Mary (Joseph) Zehnder, Arthur “Bobby” (Tina), David and Allen Adcock. Also survived by his grandchildren, including Donald whom he raised; four great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, David (Linda) Adcock, Tommy Adcock, Carol, Eleanor and Peggy; many nieces and nephews; also his canine buddies who will miss him, Sassy, Lucky, Diamond and Elton John.

Art was an avid fisherman. He will be remembered as a kind and hearty soul who loved people and would help anybody. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, from 2 until 8 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 1201 W. Route 6 at Deerpath Drive, Morris.

A prayer service will take place Friday evening at 7 p.m. with Fr. Ed Howe, C.R. Officiating, followed by Military Honors under the auspices of the Morris Color Guard. 5-year-old grandson of former Michigan coach dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The 5-year-old grandson of former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr has died, more than a year after he was diagnosed with a rare, inoperable form of brain cancer.

Chad Carr died Monday in the family’s Pittsfield Township home, where the boy had recently entered hospice care, according to his father, Jason Carr.

“He was so full of life and love,” Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said on his radio show. “But heaven got stronger. Heaven has another angel now.”

Chad’s story brought together the Wolverines’ biggest rivals as he entered hospice. Michigan State and Ohio State players wore helmet decals honoring him when they played Saturday.

It featured the image of a boy flexing his muscles and “ChadToughFDN” after the foundation created by his parents. Jason Carr is a former Michigan quarterback.

Safety urged as residents hit the road for the holiday

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An estimated 2.5 million Illinois travelers are expected to hit the road this Thanksgiving holiday weekend as transportation officials urge safety along the roadways.

Illinois transportation officials are partnering with state police and local law enforcement to remind drivers to buckle up and drive sober for what is typically one of the most heavily traveled periods of the year, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation news release.

Hundreds of enforcement zones and thousands of additional police hours will be spent this Thanksgiving weekend looking for seat-belt violators and drug- or alcohol-impaired drivers.

“This effort marks the be-

ginning of an end-of-the-year push to keep traffic fatalities at record-low levels,” the news release stated.

Traveling in the U.S.

Fatalities along Illinois roadways are up 5 percent with 881 so far in 2015, compared with 833 a year ago, according to the release.

About 1.7 million Illinoisans will travel by car this weekend – representing a 5.3 percent increase from 2014.

Nationwide, 37.2 million people are expected to travel via car or plane, a 4.7 percent increase from the 35.5 million people who traveled last year and the highest travel volume for the holiday in 10 years, according to AAA. In Illinois, about 2.2 million will travel by car while 185,000 will travel by plane.

For those hitting the road, there is some good news: Il-

linois will pay the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices since 2008, with prices averaging about $2.17 per gallon, according to AAA Chicago.

That’s about 83 cents lower than last year’s average.

Traveling abroad

For those traveling abroad, the U.S. Department of State is cautioning people to be on heightened alert due to ongoing terrorists threats from the Islamic State. The alert, posted Monday, states that “current information suggests that ... terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics, using conventional and nonconventional weapons and targeting both official and private interests.”

The travel alert will expire Feb. 24, 2016.

Travel tips • Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained. If maintenance is not up-to-date, have your car and tires inspected before taking a long drive.

• Map your route in advance and be prepared for busy roads during the most popular times of the year.

If possible, consider leaving earlier or later to avoid heavy traffic.

• If you’re traveling with children, remind them not to talk to strangers. Go with them on bathroom breaks and give them whistles to be used only if the family gets separated.

• Have roadside assistance contact information on hand, in case an incident occurs on the road.

• In case of emergency, keep a cellphone and charger with you at all times. AAA and many other companies offer smartphone applications that enable motorists to request help without a phone call.

Abby also is into Calico Critters, which Borchers is a fan of. The toy line features different dolls that make a contribution to a community and remind Borchers of Maple Town, a popular toy company from her childhood.

But classics still appear to get the job done. Abby enjoys Barbies, while Borchers’ 2-year-old son, Jaxson, loves Thomas & Friends trains.

“We’re having a battle in the house right now about whose train it is,” Borchers said. “Jaxson says ‘My Thomas.’”

For the middle school- and high school-aged kids, video games often are a sought-after gift. But there aren’t any big releases scheduled in the

next month, according to GameStop’s Andrew Hochstatter. He expects that most purchases will be made on games already for sale.

“The hottest games right now are probably ‘Star Wars Battlefront,’ ‘Halo 5,’ ‘Call of Duty,’ ‘Fallout 4’ – which is not for little kids,” he said. “And ‘Minecraft,’ because it sells every year.”

Each game except for “Minecraft” was released between Oct. 27 and Nov. 17, in time for the holiday rush.

One aspect of gaming that has become more popular, Hochstatter said, are toys and collectibles.

Last year, GameStop had a collectibles bin. But now it has a whole section that includes “Star Wars,” Legos, Skylanders and more to help meet the demand for merchandise associated with the video games.

“Collectibles could be anything from a toy, a figure, a T-shirt, to a bookbag,” he said.

Morris, Minooka football alumni to square off

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – After a day of either fighting crowds at various shopping outlets or eating Thanksgiving leftovers and enduring a football hangover, there will be a way for local guys to vent their pent-up frustration Friday night.

That’s when alumni from Morris and Minooka Community High Schools will play in a charity football game – called Black Friday Night Lights – against each other at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Morris.

All proceeds raised will benefit the athletic department of Morris High School.

This is the third annual game played between the teams, but the first to be played in Morris and with the proceeds going to Morris High School, according to a news release from event organizers.

The series stands with Morris leading, 1-0-1, as the first year’s game ended in a 6-6 tie and Morris won last year’s game, 26-12.

After two years of seeing Minooka’s athletic department reap the benefits of proceeds from the game, some Morris alumni decided that their alma mater should share the wealth this year.

“We asked [Morris athletic director] George Dergo again,” said Jim Chronister, one of the organizers on the Morris side of the event. “He saw that we were organized and not just a bunch of Bad News Bears running around and he said he’d be happy to be a part of it.

“I think the first two years, Minooka brought in around $5,000 each year. So far this year, with our sponsors and after our expenses, we are at $5,500 right now and we are hoping to have more after the game.”

The Morris athletic department will receive the proceeds from the gate, T-shirt sales and concessions.

The price of admission Friday night will be $5 for adults, $4 for students, $3 for senior citizens, and free for kids 5 and younger.

Chronister pointed out

that although the concession stand will not feature the trademark pork chop sandwiches, it will have pizza, popcorn, coffee, hot chocolate, water and possibly hot dogs.

There also will be a stand selling T-shirts, and the cheerleaders will throw out the mini-footballs following scores, just like at a varsity football game.

Response has been favorable among the alumni, as Chronister said that the Morris roster numbers 29 players and he believes the Minooka roster to be around 30 to 35 players. In the first year of the game, the Morris team had 15 players.

“Most of our guys are ones who graduated right around the year 2000,” he said. “But we do have a pretty good mix.

We have one who graduated in 1968, but most of them are spread out from 1988 to about 2005.”

The big question is what would possess someone who hasn’t played competitive football in such a long time to want to don the pads again?

Chronister pointed out that they have altered the rules of the game to minimize the risk of injury, such as no punt or kickoff returns, no blitzing

on defense and no pulling of linemen.

“Some people think that we just want to relive our high school glory days,” he said. “Well, most of us grew up playing football. People our age still play basketball or baseball or softball or tennis.

This is a chance for us to go play the game we love again, and if we can make a little money to help the school, then it’s that much better.

“We don’t just show up on the day after Thanksgiving and draw plays in the dirt.

“We have been practicing every Sunday since October, and the last couple of weeks, we have practiced twice a week.

“This last week, we haven’t had any hitting so the guys can rest up their bruises and aches and pains and be ready to play.

“There’s no one out to settle old scores or anything like that. We all know on both sides that we all have to go to work Monday, and we respect that. We just come out and play good, hard football and have fun.”

STAFF REPORTS COAL CITY – The Coal City boys basketball team opened the Keith Kiper era with a 53-40 win over Serena on Tuesday in the Coal City Turkey Tournament.

Serena led, 26-18, at halftime, but the Coalers responded by outscoring the Huskers, 35-14, in the second half, including 23-6 in the third quarter.

Keegan Clampitt led Coal City (1-0) with 17 points, while Ryan Horrie and Nick Micetich each scored nine.

“We got some great minutes out of every player on the team,” Kiper said. “We came out in the second half playing smart team basketball, which gave allowed us to earn a good win.”

At the Beecher Tournament, the Coalers got 11 points and seven rebounds from Mackenzie Bugg in the victory.

Coal City led, 21-16, at halftime, but Reed-Custer rallied to take a 29-28 lead into the fourth before the Coalers outscored the Comets, 11-7, in the final quarter for the win.

Taylor Meents added nine points for Coal City, while Cali Caruso scored six and Bridget Kauzlaric added four.

“We had some people step up tonight in place of Makenna Emerson [ankle injury],” Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. “I was glad to see we had some balanced scoring and we made some key free throws down the stretch to help us out.”

Dear Abby: When I was in my 20s and out on my own, my father left my mother for his secretary, “Doris.” They married soon after. She is a nice enough person, but she can be a little pushy. I have had to work on setting boundaries with her.

Every time we talk or visit – maybe once a month – Doris makes a point of telling me she loves me, and it’s clear she’s hoping I will reciprocate. I’m glad she’s married to my dad because he seems happy with her. I’m comfortable with my daughter calling her Grandma.

But I can’t bring myself to tell her I love her because I don’t feel that way about her.

I hoped Doris would get it

when I responded with things like, “It’s great to see you, too,” but it hasn’t happened. She’s estranged from her own daughter, and I think she wants to feel as if she’s my mom, which I’m not comfortable with.
