Born: March 13, 1957 Died: Nov. 22, 2014 Delbert Berrong, age 57, of Braceville, IL, passed away suddenly, Saturday, November 22, 2014, at his home. Born March 13, 1957, to the late Delbert S. and Isabel (nee Dunning) Berrong.

Previously employed with the Plumber’s Union #130 in Chicago, IL. Member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Braidwood, IL. Delbert enjoyed riding his Harley and he was an avid reader of westerns. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Helen (nee King) Berrong of Braceville, whom he married January 27, 1979, in Braceville; two sons, Eric and David Berrong of Braceville; two daughters, Leane (Pat) Patterson of Chatsworth, IL and Stacey (Rick) Swindells of Cullom, IL; eight grandchildren, Erica, Cassandra (Sean), Racheal, Jeffery, Alicia, Sophia, Jasmin, and Savanah; great-grandson, Justin; two sisters, Connie Chambers of Gardner, IL and Debbie Chambers of Gardner; one brother, Rick Berrong of Gardner; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Preceding him in death was an infant sister, Betty Berrong.

Visitation will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd. & Crematory, Braidwood Chapel, Wednesday, November 26, 2014, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Cremation rites will be accorded following visitation.

LEONARD J. BOLS Leonard J. Bols, age 94, of Aux Sable Township, Minooka, passed away Monday, November 24, 2014, at Park Point in Morris.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 28, 2014, between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 E. Washington St. in Morris (815-942-2500) Funeral Mass will follow Saturday, November 29th at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 303 W. St. Mary’s Street in Minooka. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Minooka.

DIANE M. BRETT Born: Jan. 11, 1943 Died: Nov. 24, 2014 Diane M. Brett (nee Dickson), age 71, late of New Lenox, formerly of Joliet and Cadiz and Kentucky for the past nine years, passed away Monday, November 24, 2014, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born January 11, 1943, in Joliet, she was the daughter of Max B. and Margaret (Rogan) Dickson. A lifelong member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond, she was a graduate of St. Raymond Grade School and St. Francis Academy.

Diane was very involved in her children’s activities serving as room mom, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother and for many years, she served as President of the Carl Sandburg Elementary School District #86 PTA. Diane’s greatest pleasure was spending time with her grandchildren, taking them on many outings and making their summers exciting. She loved holidays and baking the most delicious treats for everyone to enjoy.

She also loved working crossword puzzles, gardening and watching game shows.

Diane worked many years in office management for Gregg Lincoln-Mercury, Vidmar Buick and D’Arcy Oldsmobile. While working at Gregg Lincoln

Mercury, Diane met the love of her life, Larry. They were married May 6, 1978, in a double wedding ceremony with Larry’s sister, Bonnie and Bonnie’s late husband, Steve.

Surviving are her loving and devoted children, Kimberly (Gary) Boba of New Lenox, Michael (Robin) Dziuban of Morris and Daniel (Janice) Dziuban of Frankfort; six beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jillian and Nicholas Boba and Samantha, Kristin and Brett Dziuban; three dear great-grandchildren, Hailey and Holly Anderson and Ava Narwick; and a fond sister-in-law, Bonnie Rentschler of Minooka.

She was preceded by her beloved husband, Larry H. Brett (April 28, 2013); and her parents.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kedainis, the nursing staff at Silver Cross Hospital and at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home for the kind and compassionate care they gave not only to Diane, but to the family.

Visitation for Diane M. Brett will be Wednesday, November 26, 2014, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. Cremation Rites will be accorded following the visitation and the urns of her and her husband will be entombed at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date.

The couple bought an engagement ring and wedding band 10 years ago from the Morris store. Dave upgraded the ring for Julie to two diamond anniversary bands to celebrate their 10-year anniversary.

“I’m just showing how much I love her. This is something she wanted,” said Dave, a lifetime resident of Morris.

Van Duzer Jewelers and other local businesses are encouraging residents to shop locally instead of traveling out of town to shop this holiday season.

The jewelry store, at 411 Liberty St., is offering 30 percent off all store items all week long.

Officials urge travel caution during Thanksgiving holiday

clafortune@shawmedia.com As people take to the roads and the air this Thanksgiving holiday, area officials urge travelers to use caution and take their time.

Weather forecasts show a 40 percent chance of light snow Wednesday afternoon, with a 30 percent chance of light snow in the evening, said Amy Seeley, National Weather Service meteorologist.

Thanksgiving itself is forecast to be dry, with highs in the upper 20s.

“It looks like a dry weekend,” Seeley said.

While there may not be a lot of precipitation in the forecast, aviation officials suggest travelers heed the same advice they offer throughout the year, said Karen Pride, media relations director with the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Fliers should contact their airlines before going to the airport to check the status of their flight, Pride said. Mobile apps offered by the various airlines can help keep travelers informed of conditions and delays.

“Check with the [Transportation Security Administration] online or by calling, especially if you haven’t traveled in a while, to find out what the current regulations are,” Pride said. “Arrive at the airport, either O’Hare or Midway,

When traveling at night, that might not always be apparent, because the roadway will look so similar in the dark, Cassem said.

“Use a little extra added precaution if you’re driving in conditions that could be slippery,” Cassem said. “You think everything is fine, but when you come to a bridge, be a little careful.”

If plows are deployed, Cassem also asks that drivers give them a little extra room. Get too close, Cassem said, and a plow driver cannot see you behind them.

“They’re concentrating on plowing the road, running the salt spreader,” he said.

Morris firefighter Marx loses battle with cancer

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Ron Marx, known as a “gentle giant,” lived his life serving others as a paramedic, a police officer and a firefighter.

On Sunday morning, Marx, of Morris, lost his battle with small cell cancer, which was diagnosed April 11 after blood work during a fire department physical came back with concerns.

“He was the biggest, most gentle teddy bear that anyone could ever know,” his sister, Karen Marshall, said Monday.

“To know him, you had to love him.”

His oncologist told him if he didn’t do treatment, he would live another 30 to 60 days. If he started chemotherapy right away, he would live another six months to two years. Marx opted to start the battle to give him as much time as possible with those he loved.

The Morris City Clerk’s Office and one of the alderman seats in each of the four wards are on the April 7 ballot. A primary race will be held Feb. 24 and petitions were due to the clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Mon-

day to run in the primary as a Republican or a Democrat.

Independent party petitions can still be returned Dec. 15 through Dec. 22.

City Clerk Carol Adair is running to keep her seat as a Republican against Mary Callahan, who filed Monday as a Republican.

The open alderman seats in the First Ward and the Fourth Ward do not have races for the primary election. Republican incumbent Randy Larson is

the only candidate to turn in a petition for the Third Ward and Republican incumbent Duane Wolfe is the only candidate for the Fourth Ward.

In the Second Ward, Republican incumbent Julian Houston turned in his petition last Tuesday and Republican Doug Hayse, former Morris police chief, turned his in Thursday.

In the Third Ward, newcomers Republican Zora Baron and Democrat Jeffrey Wachowski returned petitions.

Marx told his sister the worst part of dying is the hurt you see on others’ faces and in their eyes. He said the hurt he had was for others’ pain, Marshall said.

reminisced about the day she met the man she described as the most generous and kind-hearted person she has ever known.

She will never forget the day they met on the I&M Canal, where they walked and talked for four hours on a cold November day nine years ago.

“He gave me a rose that night, and a box of candy, we’ve been together every day since then,” Tina Marx said.

The couple was due to celebrate their eighth wedding

anniversary Dec. 16.

Marx’s brother, Bob, said his brother was happy with the life he led.

“He was a very caring person who always wanted to help others,” he said.

In June a fundraiser was held for Marx to help with bills, and his sister said he couldn’t believe the number of people who wanted to help.

She said it brought him to tears each time she called and told him of another donation.

“He said the day of the

fundraiser was the most perfect day of his entire life,” Marshall said. “He never felt so much love from people.”

“When they raised the money for his trip, Ron asked me ‘Why do these people do this for me?’ ” Marshall said. “He was so humbled he couldn’t speak.”

Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said as a person, Marx was someone who gave more than he took. As a paramedic and a firefighter, he was a wealth of knowledge.

“Ron was one of the first paramedics in the state. He was in the second class the state offered and was a paramedic for over 25 years,” Steffes said. “Ron had a wealth of knowledge in treating people.

Ron was able to guide new paramedics. We lost that now, and the community lost that.”

10 Foundation encourages people to donate on Giving Tuesday

By JULIANNE BUCK Executive Director of the Community Foundation of Grundy County MORRIS – The season of giving is here. Not just the monetary gifts to charity or the gifts we give to family and friends, but also the love and talent we put into cooking and baking our favorite holiday foods to give, serve and share.

A recent Facebook post said, “Time to turn our scales back 10 pounds” – so right!

But since this isn’t a food column, I’ll stick to giving to charity, and I have two new things this month.

First, an encouragement to “give big” on “Giving Tuesday.” We give thanks on Thanksgiving, hit the stores

on Black Friday, shop local on Small Business Saturday, and shop the Web on Cyber Monday. Now we have a day dedicated to giving back. On Giving Tuesday (this year on Dec. 2), nonprofits, families, businesses, and students around the world come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

If you are planning to make a year-end gift to your favorite Grundy County charity, we ask that you do your best to deliver that gift on Dec. 2. There are no special prizes if you do or penalties if you don’t.

It’s just a fun day to bookend the hectic, consumer-driven weekend with another day of thankfulness – thank your

local nonprofits for their great work by giving your year-end donation on Dec. 2.

Then on Wednesday, we’ll announce the grand amount that charities in Grundy County collected on Giving Tuesday.

A number of nonprofit organizations serving Grundy County are participating in this event, and we have them listed on our website, cfgrundycounty.com. If the agency name is in color, it is a link to their online donation website.

If their agency address is in color, it is a map to the office so you can hand-deliver your gift.

My second idea this month is a little holiday philanthropy experiment. Do your children and grandchildren have charitable thoughts? Does philanthropy come easy for them?

One way to help teach charity is through practice.

What if you gave each child/grandchild money at Thanksgiving and instructed them to give it away? Then at Christmas dinner, lead a discussion about where they gave it and why. What did you discover about their passions?

Are those passions local, national or international?

What matters to your family? How does their philanthropy differ from yours? Will you

change your giving as a result?

Shop local this holiday season We often pass up our local merchants in lieu of national chain stores. Maybe it’s the lure of lower prices.

But how much are you really saving? And who benefits?

Likely, your money is going overseas, or into the pockets of billionaire conglomerate owners. Sure, the sales tax you pay stays local, but the rest of your money, and your patronage, go to support a business with little interest in Grundy County.

This Saturday, let’s change all that. It is Small Business Saturday, which comes one day after Black Friday, when deal-hungry shoppers flood chain stores for deals that might only save them a couple bucks. Saturday, let’s spend our money in local stores that believe in our local economy.

Some might argue that locally owned shops are more expensive. Maybe they are, but likely not by much. The advantage of local shops is that you are buying from your neighbors, who in turn reinvest your money into your community. And they probably have unique items you won’t find in big-box stores. Whenever a new governor is about to be sworn in, one of the most popular Springfield “parlor” games (which are usually not played in parlors, but in taverns, restaurants and friendly offices) is figuring out who is on their way out and who is on their way in.

But who will Rauner bring in to run the government? I cannot tell you how many times I’m asked that question every single day.

Much of the recent local speculation has focused on Republican state legislators, partly because most of the people closest to the outsider Rauner are unknown to the Springfield crowd. Legislators, on the other hand, are very well known. Some of those legislators are not so subtly floating their own names, some are just naturally assumed to be on a short list.

BRIEF Two taken to hospital after Morris accident MORRIS – Emergency responders had to extricate two people after an accident Sunday evening on Pine Bluff Road.

At 6:35 p.m. the Grundy County Sheriff’s department

was dispatched to a two-vehicle collision.

“There was a vehicle that was headed westbound that appears to have gone on the shoulder and when it came back, it went into the eastbound lane where it struck another vehicle head

on,” Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Monday.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District was called to the scene, where two people were pinned in their vehicles, Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said.

“We have no idea what caused the accident. We had to extricate both victims, which took about 20 to 25 minutes,” Steffes said.

The victims were taken in serious condition to Morris Hospital by ambulance.

Callahan said no citations were issued for the accident.

He said he didn’t know the condition of either driver, but he was told their conditions were not life-threatening.

From House Walk to Santa’s visit, annual Home for the Holidays provides variety of events

hose wanting to find the holiday spirit need to look no further than the 23rd annual Home for the Holidays events taking place in Morris during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The events start Friday and include something for people of all ages.

“We’ve moved some things around and will host the parade at 5:30 instead of 5 p.m. on Friday,” said Julie Applegate, chairwoman of the Home for the Holidays Committee. “The big thing this year is the festivities after the parade in Chapin Park.”

She said the time has changed to allow more people to get home from work and bring their children downtown to take in the Lighted Holiday Parade & Lighting Spectacular.

The parade welcomes Santa Claus to downtown Morris. The route will start at Franklin and Washington streets, and continue north on Liberty Street, ending at Chapin Park, which will be lit up with decorations.

This year, Santa Claus will remain at Chapin Park for the festivities instead of making his way to his house on Illinois Avenue right away.

Applegate said the city is providing horse-drawn sleigh rides in addition to the horse-drawn carriage rides, which will take place at the park.

“We hope people will stick around at the park where the city will have light-up hats for the kids,” Applegate said. “Carriage rides and sleigh rides will take place until 8 p.m.”

Other events taking place Friday include the lantern-making event at the Eagle’s Hall that gives children a chance to create their own lantern anytime between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.

The children will then be able to march in their very own lighted parade around the courthouse at 5 p.m. prior to the big parade.

Saturday starts off early with an opportunity for children to have breakfast with Santa at the Morris Area Public Library at 604 N. Liberty St., where a continental style breakfast will be served.

From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the annual Home for the Holidays House Walk and tea will take place, with five local homes opening their doors for House Walk guests.

“We are always looking for houses to have in the House Walk,” Applegate said. “We are thrilled to be back up to five houses this year.”

She said they have dubbed this House Walk “Over the River and Through the Woods,” with homes from the north side of Morris to south of the river being featured.

“We have five great homes that are so diverse,” said Penny Olson-Langland, chairwoman of the House

Walk. “Every home is different, whatever your style is you will walk through a house that is your style.”

Olson-Langland said there are all types of surprises in the homes to see, including an antique wooden phone booth that still works in one of the home offices.

This year, the tea will be hosted at Living Water Church of the Nazarene at 118 E. Jefferson St., which is in itself an historic building that once housed the town’s movie theatre.

“We’re looking forward to people seeing the church and it’s renovations,” Olson-Langland said.

Proceeds from the House Walk are donated to various organizations. Funds from the 2013 House Walk went to the Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice, Morris Community High School and GAVC Scholarships and the Morris Downtown Beautification Fund toward the new signage at Route 47 and Washington Streets.

he arrival of Santa in the Home for the Holidays Lighted Holiday Parade is the highlight of the Home for the Holidays weekend for many children. Once again, Santa will arrive Friday evening, bringing smiles to the faces of children of all ages.

This year’s parade once again will step off at the Grundy County Courthouse and continue north on Liberty Street to Chapin Park. Once Santa has arrived, the park will light up in all its glory. Santa will remain to visit with the children while the Coal City Madrigals entertain the crowds. And you won’t want to miss the free sleigh rides and horse drawn carriage rides.

Entries in the parade are illuminated and display the holiday spirit. Besides Santa and Mrs. Claus, floats, carolers from Toni Brandalino School of Music, scouts, antique cars and a host of characters such as Elsa, Mickey and Minnie will delight the crowd. Kids will love interacting with familiar characters as they wave to the crowd or step out of line for a moment to give a handshake or hug.

Living Water Church to host House Walk tea event

T

his year’s holiday tea that accompanies the House Walk will take place 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday at Living Water Church of the Nazarene.

The annual House Walk and tea are part of the Home for the Holidays festivities, which in the past have raised funds for the Grundy Community Hospice, Morris Downtown Beautification and local scholarships.

The tea is a must for those who would like a relaxing break from visiting the homes and downtown shopping.

The Holiday Tea Committee has been busy transforming the church into a Christmas Wonderland.

Donations of more than 300 dozen tea-sized cookies and treats will be on hand for attendees to enjoy. The tea is being donated by Lorraine Morris of the Birds and the Teas.

A variety of piano, instrumental and vocal entertainment will be provided by students of Jill Kopczick, Brandolino School of Music, Colleen Lawrence and Brent Mitchell, along with Roy Backus, Tammy Betzel and the Living Water Praise team.

The tea will be located at Living Water Church of the Nazarene, 118 E. Jefferson St., Morris. Many will recognize the building, which has undergone renovations while maintaining the original character of the building, as the former Morris Theater.

Santa to visit Morris during Home for the Holidays

W

hile Santa arrives in Morris on Friday evening during the annual Home for the Holidays Lighted Parade, and will be around the downtown area throughout the evening. He’ll also be on hand at other celebrations and events during the weekend to meet and greet children.

After a good night’s rest, Santa will be up bright and early Saturday to partake in one of the weekend’s most treasured activities – Breakfast with Santa. Children can join Santa for doughnuts and juice at the Morris Public Library, at 604 N. Liberty St. The first of five sittings will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue at 9, 9:30, 10 and 10:30 a.m.

Moms and dads are encouraged to bring their cameras and snap a photo of the kids on

Santa’s lap. A special “make and take” craft will round out the morning of fun. Reservations for this event are required, and seating is limited.

Accommodations will be arranged on a first-come, firstserved basis. Anyone interested in attending should call the library at 815-942-6880.

After breakfast, Santa will make his way to the courthouse lawn where he will be joined by his reindeer from 10 a.m. to noon. You won’t want to forget your camera for this special event.

Santa’s reindeer are friendly, tame and like to be petted.

Santa will return to his house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

But don’t worry, if you’re out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday, Santa will be at his house in Morris every weekend through Dec. 21. Stop by from 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturdays or from 1 and 3 p.m.

Redskins open up season with win over Panthers

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – It might not have been the game that Morris boys basketball coach Joe Blumberg pictured, but the Redskins outlasted Gardner-South Wilmington, 54-49, on Monday night to open the season in the first game of the Coal City Turkey Tournament.

“Our post defense was not very good,” Blumberg said.

“But part of that was the lack of guard pressure out front.

We let them get the ball inside too easily.

“But, with six guys coming in from the football team and only practicing for a week, we didn’t have a lot of time to work on a lot of things. Regardless, we are happy to get the win.”

Morris led most of the way, but Gardner-South Wilmington did not make things easy. Austin Patterson made the season’s first basket, a 3-pointer, for Morris before Kyle Robison scored for GSW to make it, 3-2. Evan Bjelland gave Morris another 3-pointer, but GSW’s Blake Marks answered. Robison then hit a pair of free throws with 3:35 to go in the first quarter to give the Panthers the lead at 7-6. A putback basket by Scott Horrie put GSW ahead, 9-6 before Patterson scored for Morris. Bjelland gave the Redskins the lead with a basket with 30 seconds left in the quarter and Patterson got a steal and hit a pull-up jumper in the lane at the buzzer to put Morris ahead, 12-9, at the first break.

Paea believes Sunday’s performance can be one the Bears can build on heading into Thursday’s game in Detroit against the Lions. As the defense showed against the Buccaneers, putting pressure on the quarterback can lead to good things. But with the Bears now at 5-6 and in need of several more wins to even be considered a playoff contender, the defense will have to play a major role.

Sunday’s showing, Paea said, was a step in the right direction.

“Every week, we’ve got to hit the quarterback and make him feel uncomfortable in the pocket,” Paea said. “I think that’s what we did in the first quarter, and it paid off from there.

CHICAGO – There are times Stephen Paea feels underappreciated – not by his Bears teammates, but instead, by the opposing offensive linemen Paea spends his Sunday afternoons trying to bypass on his way to the quarterback.

Paea isn’t surprised by the lack of attention, given the Pro Bowl-caliber defensive talent he has around him in Jared Allen, Willie Young and Jeremiah Ratliff. While the trio has been credited mainly with the pressure the Bears have put on opposing quarterbacks this season, Paea often takes a back seat.

“I’m pretty much the odd man out in there,” Paea said, smiling.

Paea said the additions of Allen, Young and Ratliff last season have allowed him to draw more one-on-one matchups while offensive linemen devote the bulk of their attention to

more established pass-rushers.

He said at times linemen have sometimes even looked away from him, suggesting they’re not expecting him to do anything.

That has only motivated Paea.

“I’ll take it – I’ll take the sack,” Paea said. “But I play with a chip on my shoulder, but at the same time, I can’t mess up. If I mess up with them, they’re going to yell at me. So I might as well do my job and do it to the best of my ability.”

Sunday’s effort was a big part of the Bears’ second-half turnaround when the offense turned back-to-back McCown turnovers into back-to-back Matt Forte touchdown runs.

Paea was constantly in the mix of the pressure McCown faced against his former team, helping lead to 21 consecutive Bears points.

Paea’s performance left quite the impression.

“Today, Paea was the tone-setter,” Ratliff said.

“Everybody wants to be the tone-setter and the guy up front, and game-to-game, across the defensive front, that changes.

Paea was that guy [Sunday].

He got great penetration, great pocket push, and it allowed the rest of us to play off off him.”

Coalers’ run ends in semifinal loss to Wildcats

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – In many games this season, the Coal City (10-3) football team fell behind early, only to regroup and rally for a victory.

In fact, in the Class 4A quarterfinal win over Manteno, the Coalers scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

In Saturday’s semifinal game against Chicago Phillips (12-1) at Gately Stadium, Coal City did fall behind early, but this time, the comeback was not to be. Phillips, which became the first Chicago Public League team to reach a state title game since Robeson in 1982, scored on its first two possessions to take a 12-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Corey Warren, who finished with 210 yards on 29 carries, broke free for a 46-yard gain to the Coal City 3 on the Wildcats’ first drive, and quarterback Dewayne Collins (20 carries, 122

Coal City faced a fourthand-inches on its first drive and gave the ball to Jack Dibble, who entered the game with 2,528 yards rushing on the year. On that play, though, the aggressive Phillips defense stopped Dibble for no gain and

took over at the Coal CIty 44.

Warren started the drive with a 23-yard gain, and Collins finished it with a 6-yard TD run for a 12-0 lead with 6:15 to play in the first quarter.

“They are a very good football team,” Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said about Phillips.

“They are very disciplined and have exceptional athletes.”

After the two teams traded punts, Dibble broke loose on a 51-yard gain to the Phillips 22. It was the longest gain of the night for Dibble, who finished wtih 132 yards on 34 carries. A pass interference call moved the ball to the Wildcats’ 13, and Dibble eventually scored on a 2-yard run. The kick was blocked, and Coal City trailed 12-6 with 25 seconds left in the first.

“Jack got his yards,” Onsen said. “But the breakaways that have been there most of the year weren’t there tonight.

Because of that, the comeback wasn’t there for us tonight, either.”

Coal City had a chance to take back the momentum when Matt Long forced a fumble and a Coaler teammate recovered.

Unfortunately, Phillips returned the favor by intercepting a pass, then scoring on the next play on a 41-yard pass from Collins to Amani Jones. Collins

then hit Quayvon Skanes on the two-point conversion for a 20-6 lead.

After another interception, Phillips took over at its 41 and took over with its ground game.

Warren and Collins shouldered the load, with Collins delivering the big play, a 20-yard run to the Coal City 5. Warren took it over from the 3, and the Wildcats led 26-6 with 4:55 to play in the first half.

Neither team scored again in a physical, hard-hitting second half. Phillips did enter the Coal CIty red zone, but the Coalers forced and recovered another fumble.

“They were a good team,” Dibble said. “But so are we. I don’t think the score indicates how good of a team we have. We made some mistakes that got us behind early, but this time we weren’t able to come back.

“It was a fun run to get this far, but it stinks to have it end a little too early.”

Here is one of the easier declarer-play problems. South is in three no-trump. West leads the spade queen: three, four ... ? How should South plan the play at rubber bridge (Chicago), when making the contract is what matters most; overtricks are far less important.

In the auction, North’s jump to three no-trump is correct at rubber bridge (and, arguably, at all forms of the game). The game bonus is so huge that it pays to gamble. Yes, if you play transfers into the minors, North might respond two spades, showing long clubs. Here, South would rebid two no-trump to deny good clubs. Then it would be reasonable for North to sign off in three clubs -- and miss a desirable game!

If the club finesse is working, the contract is safe whatever South does at trick one. But if the finesse is losing, declarer must find East with exactly ace-third of spades. And if that is the position, South must not win the first trick. East will take the next trick with his spade ace and return his last spade.

Declarer will win and run the club nine (or jack) to get home.

Colonoscopy still best way to detect colon cancer Dear Doctor K: I heard about a new home test that detects colon cancer. Is it a good alternative to colonoscopy?

Dear Reader: The new test appears to be an advance, but I don’t think it’s as good as colonoscopy. Particularly for people who are at higher risk for colon cancer, I regard colonoscopy as the best test.

Colon (or colorectal) cancer lies in the wall of the colon. It can cause painless bleeding.

The amount of blood can be so small (“occult blood”) that it isn’t visible in the bowel movement, but it can be detected by chemical tests. Performing these tests for blood in the bowel movement -- fecal occult blood tests -- has been a traditional way of trying to catch colon cancer early.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff However, colonoscopy remains the best way for catching colorectal cancer early. This test, done under sedation, uses an instrument to look inside the colon. A similar procedure, flexible sigmoidoscopy, looks at about half of the colon and doesn’t require sedation. These tests not only can see cancer, but also abnormalities (adenomas) that can become cancerous in the future. The tests also allow the adenomas and some very early cancers to be removed during the test.

In August 2014, the FDA

approved Cologuard, a new test for colorectal cancer.

The Cologuard test is done at home. You collect a stool sample and mail it to a laboratory for analysis. Like the fecal occult test, it checks for blood in stool. But the new test also looks for abnormal DNA. Colon cancers develop because genes in the cells lining the colon have developed mutations. The abnormal DNA caused by these mutations, like occult blood, is shed in the bowel movement. That abnormal DNA can now be detected by special tests.

One large study of nearly 10,000 people found the new test to be very effective. People in the study were given a fecal occult blood test, the Cologuard test and a colonos-

copy. Cologuard detected 92 percent of the cancers that colonoscopy found; the fecal occult test detected 74 percent.

Cologuard also found 69 percent of the polyps that were considered most likely to turn into cancer. The fecal occult test found 46 percent.

On the down side, the Cologuard test produced more false positives than the fecal occult test.

A false positive test says there is a polyp or cancer when none actually exists -- and that requires further investigation with a colonoscopy to confirm or rule out the diagnosis.

The new Cologuard was approved for screening in people ages 50 to 85 who have an average risk of colon cancer.

It is not meant as a substitute for colonoscopy if you have a greater-than-average risk.

This includes people with: • A history of polyps or prior colorectal cancer; • A strong family history of colorectal cancer; • Ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

Cologuard offers another option for colorectal cancer screening. But right now, colonoscopy still remains the best screening method. It is recommended once every 10 years for people age 50 and over who have an average risk of colorectal cancer.
