Deadline to file for elections is Monday

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Monday was the first day those who wish to be candidates in the March 2016 primary election could file their names in the Grundy County Clerk’s Office.

Seventeen people filed as candidates for 18 seats.

Elizabeth A. Johnson of Morris and Brooke Shupe of Frankfort filed as Democrats in hopes of taking over the position of incumbent Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland, who was the only Republican candidate to file for the seat as of 4:30 p.m.

Monday when the courthouse closed.

In August, Grundy County Circuit Clerk Karen Slattery

announced she would not run for re-election.

As expected, both Karen Broncato, deputy circuit clerk under Slattery, and Corri Trotter, principal’s secretary at Morris Community High School, filed as Republicans.

They both pulled petitions Sept. 1.

Broncato resides in Coal City while Trotter resides in Morris.

Seven candidates filed their names for Grundy County Board positions.

In District 1, Morris residents Carter Cosello and Don Hansen filed as Republican candidates.

In District 2, Lana Phillips of Morris filed as a Democrat while Mireya Martin of Mi-

nooka filed as a Republican.

In District 3, incumbent Frank Halpin Jr. of Gardner, James Riley of Gardner and Jim Ryan of Morris filed as Democratic candidates.

As for Grundy County Precinct Committee, two Democrats and four Republicans filed.

Richard Joyce of Coal City filed in Felix 1 and Halpin Jr. filed in Greenfield 1 as Democrats.

As for Republican candidates, Christina Hintze-Symoniak of Mazon filed in Mazon 1, Eric Werden of Morris filed in Saratoga 1, Cindy Limbach of Verona filed in Vienna 1 and Mary Mathewson of Morris filed in Wauponsee 1.

Any remaining certified candidates have until Monday to file.

In the article, “Meet and greet held for new executive director,” that was on page 15 of the same edition, the caption under the photo was incorrect.

Grundy County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christina Van Yperen was speaking with Ken and Julie Buck during a meet and

greet at Clayton’s Tap. In the brief, “Lockport Class of 1953 to honor 80th birthdays” that was on page 49 of the same edition, the name of the golf club was incorrectly stated.

The correct name is Prairie Bluff Golf Club.

The following area state lawmakers on Monday filed the necessary paperwork for the upcoming primary election, solidifying their intent to run, according to the State Board of Elections website: Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet; Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood; Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris; Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee.

A Republican from Kankakee, Lindsay Parkhurst, filed to challenge Cloonen.

Rep. John Anthony, R-Joliet, had not filed as of Monday evening. A Democrat from Morris, Martha J. Shugart, filed to challenge him.

The two also faced off in 2014.

Local economy grows when residents shop in area stores, businesses say

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It’s the holiday season, and shoppers might be looking for a gift to bring a loved one back to a time when things were simpler.

But they probably won’t find that item, one similar to it or one that reminds them of grandma or great-grandma’s house at a big-box store.

That’s where shopping districts such as the one in downtown Morris – full of devoted local shoppers and businesses – can save the day.

“Customers often come shop in search of something exact, or similar to, what they remember from when they were kids,” said Cassie Van Tassel, owner of Vintage. “You’ll also find a lot of unique, handmade gifts not found in big-box stores.”

That is the thinking behind Small Business Saturday, launched in 2010 by multinational corporation American Express to encourage shoppers to head to local stores rather than big-box retailers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy. Small Business Saturday is this weekend, and although local merchants hope to see their stores full Saturday, they also hope residents return throughout the year to shop locally.

Customers invest in their own communities when they shop local, Van Tassel said.

Dollars spent at locally owned businesses, rather than a big department store, help ensure economic sustainability.

“It has a positive snowball effect, and it feeds the local economy,” Van Tassel said.

“Also, items are often comparable in price to those in big stores, yet with more character, history and quality.”

Local retailers often are experts in whatever it is they choose to sell. They specialize in certain types of products or services while a large store

Finance committee OKs pay hike for nonunion workers Employee raise will go into effect Dec. 1

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Finance Committee voted 4-0, with Vicki Geiger, John Roth, John Galloway and Ann Gill absent, to approve a 2 percent increase for all nonunion county employees – both full- and part-time – effective Dec. 1.

County Board Chairman David Welter said the raises will be paid from the contingency fund.

“The raise came out of personnel committee with a positive recommendation and finance approved it tonight,” Welter said after the meeting.

“It excludes anyone who has a contract like the assessor and elected officials.”

He said the raise is comparable to potential union raises.

The Metropolitan Alliance of Police civilian union is in negotiations with the county.

The county also is in negotiations on wages with AFSCME, and the county deputies’ union contract expires Nov. 30 and will be up for negotiation.

“It’s important to recognize your staff financially,” Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor said.

The finance committee also

discussed refinancing the 2010 bonds that were used to construct the county’s 911 center, as well as other county purchases.

The 2010 series of bonds were under the economic stimulus plan, where a percent of the interest was to be reimbursed back to the county from the federal government.

The reimbursement was affected because of the federal sequestration and amounts that are scheduled to come back biannually have not been paid at 100 percent, according to Pryor.

“Refinancing these bonds reduces the exposure to the uncertainty of the federal sequestration,” Pryor said after the meeting. “Refinancing will create a more predictable debt structure.”

Pryor said the county also would accelerate the payments, paying off the debt a year early. By combining that with bond interest changes, the county would see savings.

Welter said during the meeting that although it’s not a large savings, the county still would have savings.

The committee asked Pryor to have more information at the next finance committee meeting when more committee members are present.

Toys for Joy offers free toys to families in need Mazon volunteers to host fifth annual Toys for Joy in December

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MAZON – Christmastime is coming, and for many parents that brings the stress of providing their children with gifts under the tree.

For the past five years a group of volunteers in Mazon has sought to lessen that stress by operating Toys for Joy out of the basement of Mazon United Methodist Church.

“Christmas should be enjoyable, not stressful,” said Tina Brookman of Mazon. “If we can relieve some of that pressure off parents we want to do that.”

Brookman, along with her daughter, Jamie Brookman, and friend Kris Webster, also of Mazon, spend each year gathering new and gently-used toys to give away to anyone who needs them each December.

The group accepts donations of gently-used toys that they clean up and get ready to go to a new home, along with new toys and gifts for teens.

Toys for Joy is being held the first two Saturdays of December at the church as a free event for families in need during the Christmas season to pick up toys and other items for their children.

“We do this because there

“Many of our customers during the holidays are customers the rest of the year, too,” Van Tassel said.

The same goes for Deluca’s Hallmark Store, where manager and buyer Linda Kuhn – who has worked 22 years at the store – said she often sees the same customers multiple times a week. Kuhn explained that first-name relationships, in a community where seemingly everyone knows each other, are what keeps this Hallmark store going strong. At one time there were 4,000 Hallmark stores, she said, but that number has been cut in half.

The reality is, shoppers can buy a card just about anywhere – even online.

“But customer service is essential here, in helping someone find the exact card they’re looking for,” Kuhn said.

It’s a dedicated local customer base that kept businesses in

downtown Morris through the recession. Although the economy is not completely recovered yet, Kuhn said, loyalty kept the store going.

“If we didn’t have all the local shoppers, we wouldn’t be in business,” Kuhn said. “They pull us through.”

In downtown Morris, Hallmark is considered an anchor store for the retail district because it is a nationally known name, Kuhn said. But chances are you won’t find the same friendly and helpful environment at a shopping mall.

The staff balances Hallmark’s nationwide promotions with ones created by the Morris Retail Association. Hallmark currently is running a sale where everything placed in a tote is at discount, except for Keepsake Christmas ornaments, which are a big attraction on their own. All of this points toward a successful end of the year when it comes to local shopping. The fourth quarter – comprised of the last three months of the year – is the time that can make or break a retailer’s year, Kuhn said.

“But it’s been a good year,” she said.

CHANNAHON – Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold announced Monday the Channahon Police Department will host its seventh annual Citizens Police Academy, a 12-week program that allows Channahon residents to get a firsthand view of situations police officers face on a daily basis.

Residents can expect to get experience in a variety of law enforcement topics taught by members of the police department.

The academy starts Feb. 18 and meets from 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday until May 5.

The main goals of the Citizens Police Academy are to allow the Channahon Police Department to develop a better working relationship with the community it serves and give the community an opportunity to learn more about its police department.

It’s time to begin celebrating the Christmas season and enjoying all that Home for the Holidays has to offer. This year’s schedule is filled with activities that have delighted both adults and children over the years, with a few additions that you are sure to enjoy.

The lighted holiday parade promises to be a crowd-pleaser.

The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday and conclude at Chapin Park. Once Chapin Park has been lit, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand to visit with the children. The Coal City High School Madrigals will entertain, and charming horsedrawn carriage rides will be available at the park.

Additionally, the City of Morris will be offering historic horse-drawn wagon rides and passing out gifts to the children.

The Home for the Holidays House Walk Committee has been diligently working to secure homes for this year’s house walk. Penny Olson-Langland, Anne Long and Cathy Webster have secured four beautifully decorated homes in Morris. On behalf of the committee and the community, I would like to thank each of these homeowners, as well as the hosts and hostesses at each home. This year’s tea will take place at First United Methodist Church. Be sure to come in to warm up and see “Christmas Through the Eyes of a Child” while enjoying some tea and homemade cookies.

Although many of our downtown shops already have had their holiday open houses, to many the Home for the Holidays weekend marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

fter the turkey is gone and the last piece of pumpkin pie eaten, downtown Morris transforms later this week into a Rockwellian atmosphere filled with twinkle lights, carolers on the streets, carriage rides, hot apple cider and, of course, the big guy from the north, Santa.

Reflected in its charm, downtown Morris is the scenic backdrop for the annual Home for the Holidays festivities.

“This annual event is to welcome the holiday season and Santa to downtown Morris in a fun event for families, residents and visitors alike,” said Julie Applegate, executive director of the Morris Downtown Development Partnership and chairwoman of this year’s event.

Home for the Holidays kicks off Friday with the three-day Festival of Trees silent auction sponsored by the Grundy County Historical Society. Members of the society spend hours on the trees to make sure they are decorated in a professional and themed manner.

Other Home for the Holiday activities throughout the day Friday include lantern crafts and parade, photo opportunities at the North Pole, open houses at Morris retailers and more.

Applegate said one of the highlights of the festival each year is the annual lighted holiday parade, which takes place at 5:30 p.m.

Friday on Liberty Street from the courthouse to Chapin Park. After the parade, revelers can stay and watch the lighting of Chapin Park and visit with Santa.

“We have chosen Ken and Joan Sereno of Morris to be the Grand Marshals of the parade this year due to the long time service to the community. Ken was an alderman for years and a local historian with the Grundy County Historical Society and Joan has been with Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice for years,” Applegate said. “It was a good year to honor them.”

Joan Sereno said she was shocked with she received the call from Applegate about the Home for the Holidays duties, and both are honored that the MDDP would think of them for this honor.

Saturday morning, children and parents will flock to the beloved tradition of the free breakfast with Santa.

Applegate said this year, the MDDP decided to have online registration for the breakfast and the event sold out in one day.

“We need to look into an extra day I think. It’s that

popular,” she said.

For the adults on Saturday, tickets are on sale for $15 for the Christmas House Walk, which will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are four homes around Morris for the walk, as well as a complimentary tea at First United Methodist Church.

Applegate said on Saturday the retailers will celebrate “Small Business Saturday” and urges people who come to Morris to shop and eat in the quaint downtown area. For the kids, there are photo opportunities with Santa and his reindeer, and well as a children’s winter carnival and free trolley rides

to Mickey and Minnie Mouse as well as other characters.

Home for the Holidays is truly an event for everyone, big or small, and offers good old fashioned fun in a community setting.

“My favorite part of this weekend is when I see the big smiles on the kids’ faces when they see Santa for the first time,” Applegate said.

he arrival of Santa in the Home for the Holidays Lighted Parade is the highlight of the Home for the Holidays weekend for many children. Once again, Santa will arrive Friday evening, bringing smiles to the faces of children of all ages.

This year’s parade once again will step off at the Grundy County Courthouse and continue north on Liberty Street to Chapin Park. Once Santa has arrived, the park will light up in all its glory! Santa will remain to visit with the children while the Coal City Madrigals entertain the crowds. Adding to the fun will be free historic horse-drawn wagon and carriage rides and fun gifts for the children, compliments of the City of Morris.

Entries in the parade are illuminated and display the holiday spirit. Besides Santa and Mrs. Claus, floats, dancers, Scouts, antique cars and a host of characters – such as Mickey and Minnie – will delight the crowd. Children will love interacting with familiar characters as they wave to the crowd, or step out of line for a moment to give a handshake or hug.

The parade committee, led by Ken Buck, would like to thank this year’s parade sponsors: D Construction, Edward Jones, Fruland Funeral Home, LyondellBasell and Midwest Auto Service.

Over the course of the weekend celebration, Santa will be on hand at many events to greet children. After a good night’s rest, Santa will be up bright and early Saturday to partake in one of the weekend’s most treasured activities – Breakfast with Santa. Children can join Santa for doughnuts and juice at the Morris Public Library, 604 N. Liberty St. The first of five sittings will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue at 9, 9:30, 10 and 10:30 a.m.

Moms and Dads are encouraged to bring their cameras and snap a photo of the children on Santa’s lap. A special “make-and-take” craft will round out the morning of fun. Reservations for this event are required and seating is limited. Accommodations will be arranged on a first-come, first-served basis.

Following breakfast, Santa will make his way to the courthouse lawn where he will be joined by his reindeer from 10 a.m. to noon. You won’t want to forget your camera for this special event. Santa’s reindeer are friendly, tame and like to be pet. Santa will return to his house from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 29.

But don’t worry if you’re out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday; Santa will be at his house in Morris every weekend through Dec. 20. Stop by between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays or from 1 to 3 p.m. Sundays.

Annual House Walk to feature four homes Four homes will be featured in the 2015 Home for the Holidays House Walk.

The event is hosted by the Home for the Holidays committee.

This colonial was built in 1942, (one of the last homes to be built in Morris before the World War II building moratorium) is set on three city lots and three-fourths of an acre, and features four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths. he 2015 Home for the Holidays Tea will be hosted by the First United Methodist Church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 118 W. Jackson St. Plans are underway to transform the fellowship hall into a beautiful and magical room that resembles “Christmas Through the Eyes of a Child.” Yes, that is the theme that will greet you as you stop for a cup of coffee or hot tea and some delicious homemade cookies.

Favorite children’s Christmas books, toys and trees decorated with colored lights will take you back to your childhood and all the wonder

and excitement that Christmas promises. Of course, the greatest promise of Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, so there also will be a nativity.

Be sure to enter the church by the canopy entrance where you will be given a friendly welcome by our greeters.

You will then travel down the steps to the fellowship hall for refreshments and entertainment by many of our local musicians.

An elevator is located inside the door by the canopy entrance if that would be helpful for you.

Minooka suffers tough defeat in WJOL Tourney

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The opening game of the 20th WJOL Thanksgiving Classic on Monday night at the Sulivan Center unveiled a budding star.

Lemont junior guard P.J. Pipes, who had a solid varsity season as a sophomore, scored 25 points and made five steals as those Indians went on a late 9-0 run to secure a 54-46 victory over the Minooka Indians.

Lemont (1-0) thus gets a leg up in Group B in the tournament and will meet Providence at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Minooka (0-1) will take on Lockport at 8:15 Wednesday.

“I thought P.J. [Pipes] was the best player on the floor at the end of the first half and the end of the game,” said Lemont coach Rick Runaas, whose team is playing in its first WJOL Tournament. “I was glad to see he was confident enough to do that.”

Another of the stand-out players on the floor was Minooka senior forward Joe Butler, who finished with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting and eight rebounds.

When he swished a 3-pointer to cap Minooka’s second-half rally, it gave coach Scott Tanaka’s team its first and only lead, 41-40, with 3:22 left.

But Lemont’s Mike Wisz hit a layup and free throw, then Pipes took over to put it away.

Butler’s 3-pointer with 0:18 remaining got Minooka within 50-46, but Lemont hit four free throws to close it out.

That ended a game of runs.

Lemont had a 7-0 run to lead 13-5 midway through the first quarter. An 8-0 Minooka streak tied it 13-13 late in the quarter.

Lemont went on an 8-0 run, during which time Pipes had two steals and layups and Austin Tittle scored four points, for a 30-21 lead at the break.

“That run at the end of the first half cost us the game,” Tanaka said. “Seventeen turnovers that we had, plus our inability to take charges until late in the game, was the difference.

“He would have taken care of the ball for us,” Tanaka said.

“We talked at halftime about how you never know where the difference in a game will come,” Runaas said. “Our guys will learn that. Tonight, I thought the difference was the run we had at the end of the first half. It basically was an even game after that.”

However, the pattern of runs by both sides continued.

Lemont’s 8-0 streak to end the first half stretched to 14-0 early in the third quarter as Runaas’ team stepped out to a 36-21 lead.

Minooka’s Antonio Milazzo hit a 3-pointer with 3:27 left in the third quarter to make it 36-24. That ended a stretch where, going back to the first

half, Minooka went 7:02 without scoring.

It also ignited a 15-0 run, keyed by Larry Roberts (16 points) and Joe Butler, as Minooka tied it 36-36 with 6:12 left in the game.

So, the Redskins turned to one of the players who did have some varsity experience in Monday night’s season opener against Gardner-South Wilmington at the Coal City Turkey Tournament.

And Jordan Miracle responded.

Miracle, a senior guard, got off to a quick start, making 4-of-5 shots from the field in the first quarter, and finished with a game-high 22 points to help Morris cruise to a 59-38 win.

“It’s the first game of the year, so we didn’t know much about them and they didn’t know much about us,” Miracle said. “You just go out and play and see who wins. They were playing a zone and we were able to run our offense and get some open looks. I knocked down some shots and it got a little easier after that because we had some confidence.”

With Miracle hitting a pair of 3-pointers and two 2-point baskets, along with a free throw, in the first quarter, the Redskins – who take on Immaculate Conception in tourney action Wednesday night at 7 – opened up a 9-2 lead early on in the first quarter en route to an 18-5 edge at the end of the period.

Morris maintained the double-digit advantage the rest of the game as the defense, for the most part, limited G-SW’s offensive options.

“The early lead was a key for us,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “With so much inexperience on the floor, we were able to play loose, focus on the next task, relax and play loose instead of staring at a scoreboard and doing math.

“I thought ‘Jo-Jo’ [Miracle] and Matt Shaw did a good job of scoring for us, and Nathan Halcomb had some real nice flashes to open spots in the first half to give us an

inside-outside game. We aren’t going to get 22 points a game from Jo-Jo, but he is someone that we are going to have to rely on consistently for points.”

When South responds one heart, North re-evaluates his hand, adding two points for his singleton. This makes his hand worth a game-invitation. South would then head for a slam. He needs one more trick, which might come from a 3-3 spade split or a second diamond trick.

Since playing diamonds requires guesswork (or, as here, is fatal), declarer should try spades first. So, he draws trumps and cashes the three top spades.

When they split, he discards a diamond on the last spade. If spades are 4-2 or worse, South should twice lead diamonds toward the dummy and hope he can guess which honor is held

Larynx changes during puberty can cause boy’s voice to crack Dear Dr. K: My son is 14, and his voice has started to change. Why does this happen?

Dear Reader: Your son is going through puberty. A change in his voice is just one of several changes in this phase of life.

The first thing that generally happens to a boy during puberty is that his testicles begin to get larger and to make testosterone.

Then, the penis begins to grow and sexual hair begins to appear.

He will become more muscular. He will have more frequent erections, become capable of making sperm and thus become fertile.

Boys undergo a growth spurt during puberty.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The bones get longer and then wider. Along with the growth of muscles and bones, there is an even greater growth in the amount of body fat. As a result, body fat becomes a greater fraction of total body weight during puberty.

There also are changes in the heart and blood vessels.

Boys develop a greater aerobic capacity, and blood pressure rises slightly.

The reason much of this happens is, in part, rising levels of testosterone.

In particular, the increase

in this hormone causes changes in the larynx, or voice box.

That’s what is causing the change in his voice.

The larynx is located in the throat at the top of the trachea, or windpipe. The larynx contains the vocal cords, two tiny muscles.

These two muscles tighten and relax to change how air passes through the larynx.

When you raise or lower the pitch of your voice, it is the tightness of the vocal cords that causes the pitch to change. So, changes in the larynx or vocal cords affect your voice.

During puberty, testosterone causes a boy’s larynx to get bigger. The vocal cords also lengthen and thicken in response to testosterone.

Just as the shortest strings on a harp or piano make the highest sounds, the short vocal cords of children produce voices that are high in pitch.

The longer cords of adult males produce lower-pitched voices.

As the larynx and vocal cords are going through this growth phase, the changes can cause the voice to “crack.” The change of voice can happen quickly; over only a few weeks or months, the voice begins to crack and then becomes deeper and more resonant.

As girls go through puberty, their vocal cords also lengthen. But the growth is more modest, so their voice changes are not as noticeable.

If a boy does not go through puberty because of a deficien-

cy of testosterone, his voice will remain high.

In fact, in 16th-, 17th- and 18th-century Italy, young boys with a talent for singing operatic or religious music were sometimes castrated.

The resulting failure of testosterone levels to rise preserved the high pitch of the boys’ voices into adulthood.

There’s nothing a boy can do to prevent his voice from cracking as he goes through puberty. If it is making your son uncomfortable, remind him that this happens to all teenage boys and will pass soon enough.
