We have plenty to be thankful for I recently had the opportunity to attend my first Morris Hospital Auxiliary Gala and drove home that evening impressed, inspired and impacted.

With Thanksgiving only a few days away, it reminded me of what a great community we have and how much I appreciate the continued support displayed for Morris Community High School. It is from this “thankful” frame of mind that I share some thoughts on a multitude of blessings.

I was impressed by the mission of the hospital auxiliary: to make the cardiac screening program for youth a reality for our region. Programs of this magnitude are costly and beyond the financial means of most high schools. I was impressed by the determination and drive of Brenda Walsh, who lost her son Kaleb to sudden cardiac death at the age of 14. She has helped champion this cause so that potential medical issues can be detected and lives saved.

I was impressed by the generosity displayed when

COMMUNITY PULSE Pat Halloran emcees Shawn Hornsby and Larry Little challenged the crowd to raise $80,000 in 20 minutes – and the crowd responded by donating $76,000 to help get this screening program off the ground. It’s an impressive display of generosity by a caring community.

I was inspired by the evening in a number of ways.

Certain points in time or events cause me to be very reflective. I have had the privilege to work at Morris High School for the past 11plus years and am amazed at the financial support this community provides for our school and students. With the many financial challenges our school faces, parents are asked to support their students education well beyond property taxes or registration fees.

I was inspired to research how much money has been donated to Morris High School

over the past five years. From donations of $40,000 to gifts of $100, this community has donated nearly $400,000 to help our learning community. From equipment, athletic supplies, honors night recognition, to band uniforms – the people of Morris are a source of inspiration with their continued support for our school.

The people I was fortunate enough to sit with at the Gala impacted me. Along with fellow school administrators, I had the honor of sitting with a family that was impacted by sudden cardiac death. Wendy Mundigl lost her son Mitchell in 1999 when he was just 15 years old. Her daughters Lindsey and Hannah joined us, as well as Wendy’s close friend Deb Button.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the room as we watched Brenda Walsh talk about her son and how important implementing this screening program is for our students.

Hannah, an MCHS junior, impacted me when she appeared on the screen holding a picture of her brother, and asked for support of this project.

I asked Hannah at school the other day how she felt about the evening. She simply said, “I was amazed at the support – it blew me away.” I agree.

I am thankful for the staff at MCHS and the work they do to help others. Our employees organize fundraisers for various causes, ring the bell for The Salvation Army, help needy families throughout the year, make meals for friends in need, and help co-workers through the toughest of times.

The spirit of giving is alive at MCHS. Take time this season to count your blessings and reflect on what you are thankful for. From my family to yoursHappy Thanksgiving.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – Area Girl and Boy Scouts darted about Sunday at Diamond Banquet Hall, cleaning up and delivering refreshments as music from the Coal City Footnotes drifted overhead as communities came together to eat, socialize and be thankful.

Connor Super, 11, of Coal City is with Boy Scout Troop 466.

He and his troop have been on hand at the annual holiday meal to help for the past three years.

“I think it’s fun. I like helping out the community,” Connor said. “They always have a smile on their faces and they say ‘thank you’ when you help them.”

He said helping others always is the right thing to do.

Elsie DeWald couldn’t agree more – and that’s why she works with a host of volunteers to cook hundreds of pounds of turkey, along with all the fixings, for the annual meal.

“We have over 150 volunteers working here, and we’re still cooking as we serve,” she said Sunday afternoon at the free Thanksgiving dinner put on for communities in the surrounding area.

The dinner started three years ago as a way to feed people in need, said DeWald.

After the first year organizers opened the event to anyone who wanted to come, and they continued to deliver to anyone who wouldn’t be able to come out.

By 1:30 p.m. Sunday, 400 dinners has been sent out to be delivered.

Megan Thayer, 13, of Coal City and a member of Girl Scout troop 700, was one of the volunteers who along with her mother were out delivering meals.

She said when they dropped food off at one home, the girl who answered the door went on and on about how thankful they were to get the food.

That was the best part of the day for her.

At one table in the crowded dining hall at Diamond Banquet Hall, which is donated to hold the event, Bonnie and Butch Chellino of Braidwood and Mary and Dan Smith of Gardner sat eating a meal they all agreed was delicious.

Midwest Paintball now open MORRIS – Midwest Paintball opened Saturday in Morris and brought avid paintballers indoors during the first snow of the season. The facility allows players a chance to play when outdoor conditions aren’t ideal.

Mike Burger, a 10-year paintballer, said owner Ray Smith, son Shane and staff have built one of the best indoor paintball setups you can find. He said the acoustics of the building, which are especially important when paintballers are firing away and teammates need to communicate, are great.

Chicago Disconnect, an area team that formed in the early summer, was on hand Saturday to practice and check out the new facility. Midwest Paintball is open from noon to 11 p.m.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – This will be the 13th year the community has been invited to Al’s Family Restaurant in Morris to enjoy a free Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day. Phil Ortiz has hosted I Care International’s Thanksgiving Dinner each year as a way to give back to the community and to give residents a place to go and be with others.

“It started because I knew there were a lot of people alone at the holiday time,” Ortiz said.

“The idea is to give companionship to people in a friendly atmosphere.”

Al Lopez, owner of the diner, said he enjoys spending each year with those who come in. While his extended family

takes up a table in the back, residents fill the tables and booths, and for a day they’re family.

“This is 13 years we’ve been doing this,” Lopez said. “No one should be alone.”

Ortiz is the co-founder of I Care, an organization that works to improve vision and health for those less fortunate.

I Care volunteers travel to other countries, providing glasses, hearing aids and other medical supplies to people in need.

At the Thanksgiving dinner, donations of used glasses and hearing aids will be accepted for I Care International service trips. Ortiz said he remembers growing up in Ottawa, where his parents would host Thanksgiving and invite anyone who had nowhere else to go. That is a tradition he wanted to model.

Dan Smith nodded in agreement as he ate the last bites of his pumpkin pie.

The two couples said they will be with family on Thanksgiving, but the added event to Thanksgiving week was nice – especially since they didn’t have to cook or clean up.

Mary Smith said in addition to her and her husband having their meal, another meal was delivered to her mother’s home in Coal City.

“My mom had one delivered to her,” Mary Smith said. “It’s icy out and we don’t need her to fall going out.”

While the parking lot still had patches of ice, it didn’t keep hundreds of people from showing up.

DeWald said she was pleased with the turnout; organizers made enough food to feed 1,200 people, the number of people who showed up in 2014.

Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc was handing out sweet potatoes and a smile in the line for those dining in.

COAL CITY – Volunteers are needed in Coal City for continued clean-up efforts from the June 22 tornado.

The Rev. Mark Hughey with New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City is trying to gather at least 100 volunteers to come out Nov. 28 to pick up debris in a field at Spring and Reed roads.

“When you take a group of 20 people out to clean a field, they feel like it is going to take forever, so we are requesting for more people to join us,” he said.

The field had corn planted in it at the time of the tornado and it wasn’t until the farmer started harvesting the corn

that the amount of debris was discovered. Hughey said there are sections of the field that couldn’t be harvested due to downed tree branches and a portion of a roof.

“There is a chunk of roof out there that has shingles and ceiling joists still attached,” he said.

Hughey said 95 percent of the cleanup is done but the church continues to receive requests for help. A few houses have been torn down and the group has at least one more house to go.

Coordinators also will need volunteers to help move contents of a shed into a storage pod.

If a family or a group from an organization is coming he asks the designated leader call and leave the number. Organizers will need to know a final count so they can provide lunch to those assisting.

Hughey said he would be happy to have the names and contact information for those who may be available to volunteer in the future so he has additional resources to call.

Those who are a skilled tradesman are asked to leave that information in the message.

Bob Foster, former light heavyweight champ, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Bob Foster, the former light heavyweight champion who fought Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali and went on to become a sheriff’s deputy, died Saturday. He was 76.

New Mexico state Rep. Antonio Maestas said in a statement that Foster died at Presbyterian hospital in Albuquerque with wife Rose and his family at his side.

“His wife Rose Foster, his children, and Family thank you for your prayers and support in this time of healing,” the statement said.

In Las Vegas before the Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez fight, a 10-count was tolled on the bell at Mandalay Bay in honor of Foster.

Standing 6-foot-3, the big-punching Foster was 56-8-1 with 46 knockouts. He won the light heavyweight title in 1968 when he stopped Dick Tiger in the fourth round of their fight

It was the only time Tiger was knocked out in his career.

Two years later, Foster moved up to heavyweight to challenge Frazier for the title.

Foster regained his 175-pound title in his next fight, but in 1972 fought again as a heavyweight, meeting Ali at a Lake Tahoe casino. Again, Foster was overmatched, with Ali knocking him down seven times before the fight was

finally stopped in the eighth round.

Foster, who was named the third-greatest light heavyweight ever by Ring Magazine in 1994, made 14 successful title defenses before retiring as champion in 1974. He returned a year later, finally retiring for good in 1978 after being knocked out in his last two fights.

Foster was the Boxing Writers Association of America fighter of the year in 1968, edging Frazier in a close vote.

He was inducted in the International Boxing Hall of Fame’s first class in 1990.

While still boxing, Foster began his career with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department.

Born in Borger, Texas, Foster grew up in Albuquerque and played football at Albuquerque High.

He served in the Air Force.

A public service and celebration of life will be held in Albuquerque.

Former South Korean President Kim Young-sam dies at age 87

By HYUNG–JIN KIM The Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea – Former President Kim Young-sam, who formally ended decades of military rule in South Korea and accepted a massive international bailout during the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, died Sunday.

He was 87.

The chief of Seoul National University Hospital, Oh Byung-Hee, told a televised briefing that Kim died there early Sunday.

He said Kim is believed to have suffered from a severe blood infection and acute heart failure before he died.

Kim was taken to the hospital on Thursday due to a high fever, Oh said.

In recent years, Kim had been treated at the hospital for stroke, angina and pneumonia, Oh added.

Route 47 ramp onto westbound I-80 closed because of vehicle crash

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Westbound Interstate 80 was shut down from Route 47 to mile marker 102 for several hours Sunday because of a single-vehicle crash.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Deputy Chief Bob Wills said the agency responded along with Seneca Fire Protection to a crash where a pickup truck lost control and went into the westbound ditch. Illinois State Police said the crash happened at mile marker 107 about 9:35 a.m.

One person was ejected

from the vehicle and the vehicle landed on top of him, pinning him under it.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District personnel were able to extricate him within 30 minutes and he was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

One passenger in the vehicle was taken by ambulance to Morris Hospital and two others refused treatment.

An Illinois State police spokeswoman said ISP closed down westbound I-80 from the Route 47 Morris exit to mile marker 102 because of icy road conditions. The road reopened after IDOT cleared the road.

Practice can lead to a perfect shot As I sit in my living room and gander at the deer hanging on the walls, I reminisce about those past hunts. Each one has its own story. The hunt I am most proud of, however, is different than the others.

The season was one of hard feelings and self-loathing. The property I had hunted for years was sold. Some developer with deep pockets came in and offered the landowner money he couldn’t turn down. I can’t blame him.

I’m sure I would have done the same thing.

I was lucky, though, and secured another place to hunt.

One problem existed.

I went from day after day of seeing deer on the old property to day after day of seeing nothing on the new one. Of course, I couldn’t shake the hurt feelings of losing that prime piece to yet another development.

To keep my mind on the positive, I spent a lot of time practicing with my bow. In fact, I practiced more than in any previous season because I figured I might as well shoot at a target. Who knew if I would ever get to pull the bow back on stand with the luck I was having.

I spent hours in the yard simulating real-world situations. My mind’s eye imagined a deer doing every conceivable thing a whitetail might in the woods. I pictured narrow shooting lanes between trees.

I practiced holding the bow at full draw for an impossibly long time, waiting for the deer in my mind to relax.

If I could think of it, I practiced it.

Between sessions in the yard, I would spend some time on stand on real hunts.

They all ended the same. No deer. Nothing. Not even a sighting. Frustration set in, so I went and practiced some more.

One crisp Wednesday morning I decided to go and sit in the tree.

I promised myself I would

I looked at my watch when I felt I had enough.

Then I reminded myself, “No, I’m going to sit at least another 30 minutes.”

I nestled in for the long haul. The thought of leaving had just left my mind when the corner of my eye caught some movement. I scanned the woods carefully. Then I witnessed a large mass of antlers twist and shake through some brush.

My heart jumped. My mind refused to believe what my eyes were seeing. A gorgeous buck was headed my way. When it reached the 20-yard mark, it quartered toward me.

If you are a bowhunter, you know that this is probably one of the most difficult shots you can possibly be faced with. We all dream of the beautiful broadside target, but that was not going to happen.

The daunting angle never phased me. I had visualized such a shot in my yard a million times. I drew my bow back, bleated, the buck stopped, and I let the arrow fly. I did it.

Never in my life had I been so confident in my shooting abilities. Never did I feel that the obstacle before me couldn’t be mastered. It was all because of practice.

We all know how important practice time is.

Pro athletes do it year around. A person cannot expect to perform when they haven’t prepared for it.

I was so glad I prepared that season. It was a lesson well-learned.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia,com MINOOKA – It has become as much a part of the area winter sports season as watching the weather and wondering which games are going to be played and which are not.

Minooka’s girls basketball team will be tough to beat.

For the last four years, a lot of that had to do with the fact that Kelly Carnagio was in the middle of things. Much to the delight of Indians opponents this season, Carnagio has graduated, and her presence won’t have to be accounted for. Carnagio was a two-time all-Southwest Prairie Conference selection; and in her four years on the varsity, Minooka won two regional titles and last year’s SPC championship.

But, even though her presence in the middle will be missed, her departure doesn’t mean that the cupboard is bare. That’s because the Indians return starters Sydney Arlis and Brooklyn Bachmann from last year’s team, which went 20-7.

Arlis, who was named MVP of the SPC last season, averaged 12 points, 3.9 assists and 5.3 rebounds a game last year, while also usually guarding the opposition’s best player.

“Sydney is probably the best defensive player I have ever coached,” Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said.

Bachmann, meanwhile, was also named all-SPC last year and averaged 9.2 points and 3.0 assists a game from

“Sydney is a four-year varsity starter, and Bachmann has started every game since freshman year as well,” Liberatore said. “Any girls coach in the state would love to have these two players as their core.”

Replacing Carnagio at the center position will be a combination of juniors Abby Holloway and Lauren Heafey, as well as freshman Savannah Johnson.

The Indians also look to get significant contributions from Latricia Dean, Haley Arlis, Ellie Rivera, Courtney Kurtz, Danyelle Myers, Madalyn O’Dette, Kathleen Gossen and Allison Newsom.

“Unfortunately, senior forward Heather Bonde has to have another ACL surgery, and she will be missed,” Liberatore said. “Heather was the leading scorer of our sophomore team two years ago and missed all of last year as well with knee problems as well.”

“Brooklyn and Sydney will be our leaders,” Liberatore said, “but it will come down to how well we play as a team and fill the roles of the past senior class. With [assistant coach] Rob Torchia running our defense, we will always be one of the top defensive teams in the area.”

Opening drive costly for ‘D’

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – For the third week in a row, the Bears had to come from behind. For the third consecutive game, the opposing offense moved the ball down the field with ease to go up, 7-0.

On Sunday, it was Brock Osweiler and the Broncos, who took the ball after a Bears three-and-out and went 74 yards in four plays, punctuated by Demaryius Thomas’ 48yard touchdown in their 17-15 win over the Bears.

“We have to start faster than that,” linebacker Shea McClellin said. “We haven’t done a very good job the last three or four weeks. I don’t know what it is. We just have to correct it. It’s that simple.”

On the touchdown, Osweiler found Thomas without a defender in sight in the middle of the field, and the wideout did the rest.

Chris Prosinski, who started at safety for the injured Antrel Rolle, missed a tackle after Thomas’ catch.

“I’ve got to make that play on that opening series. Openfield tackle,” Prosinski said.

Two weeks ago, Danny Woodhead was left alone on his touchdown catch. Last Sunday, Todd Gurley had a long catch-and-run that led to a Rams score. This week, Tracy Porter took responsibility for the coverage error.

“I should’ve done a better job of communicating with Kyle [Fuller], communicating

with the safeties of what we had, so I’ll take full responsibility for that one,” Porter said. “If we did a better job with communication, who knows, we would have stopped the opening drive and they wouldn’t have had it.”

Like the last two games, as well, however, the Bears’ defense stood tall, allowing only 10 points the rest of the way.

Tight ends run free: Using Gary Kubiak’s play-action and boot action, Osweiler moved the pocket and was able to utilize his tight ends over the middle of the field or in the flat. Vernon Davis and Owen Daniels combined to catch 10 passes for 137 yards.

“We knew coming in they had good, versatile tight ends,” Bears linebacker Christian Jones said. “They made some plays on us, but we made some, too.”

Prosinski said the defense was not surprised by Osweiler’s reliance on his big tight ends, and the focus for defenders is to have good eyes.

New return man: Deonte Thompson, promoted from the practice squad before last week’s Rams game, was active for the first time as a Bear and replaced Marc Mariani as the kickoff returner, a role he played for the Ravens in 2012 and 2013.

“It was something I had done before,” he said. “Just getting comfortable with the guys and letting them get to know my pace of how I come out of the end zone, my speed and what-not and how to hold

on to the blocks and stuff.”

Focus turned to Thanksgiving:

The Bears need to have a short memory from their third loss by three points or fewer in the past five games with a Thursday night game at Lambeau Field upcoming.

“Don’t hang your head.

We can’t afford to do that,” offensive lineman Matt Slauson said. “We have to keep believing. We aren’t out of this by any stretch. We just have to keep on fighting, keep on working, that’s all we can do.”

Jones said the message in the locker room was to build on the positives from Sunday and bring it into a crucial game.

“This game’s over. Can’t change what happened,” he said. “All we can do is build on it and move forward to the Packers. That’s a big game, division game, Thanksgiving night. We’ve got to come out strong in that game and try to get a win.”

At 4-6, any playoff hopes are just flickering, but Porter said that only increases the significance of the Thanksgiving night affair.

Quick hits: Ka’Deem Carey, who had nine carries for 32 yards, left the game in the third quarter and was diagnosed with a concussion.

Marquess Wilson led the Bears with 102 yards receiving.

Adrian Amos had the first sack of his career, one of five for the Bears on the afternoon.

Amos also had the team’s only pass defensed.

Broncos knew what to expect out of Gase, Chicago offense

By NATE ATKINS natkins@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – There was no denying that next to Peyton Manning’s absence, the big storyline entering Sunday’s Bears-Broncos game was the reunion John Fox and Adam Gase would have with the AFC West dynasty they helped create and were abruptly released from after last season.

The Denver players just believe it was Chicago’s storyline all along.

“Nah. There wasn’t anything extra. We just needed a win,” TJ Ward said of facing Fox and Gase, who led the Broncos to a 46-18 record from 2011 to 2014. “We’d lost two in a row. It didn’t matter who we played today. We needed to get a win, and it just happened to be against our ex-coach.”

That’s the storyline that matters to the Broncos because that’s the one they’ll carry outside of Soldier Field, where the 17-15 win they gutted out in Brock Osweiler’s first career start wasn’t the prettiest but arguably the most necessary one yet. The Broncos came into Soldier Field fresh off losses to the Colts and Chiefs after a 7-0 start. A third straight loss would have been a rough way to go into next week’s matchup with the 9-0 Patriots.

And so, at 8-2, they’ll cherish a win over the Bears, a victory built on defense against

their offensive coordinator of the past two seasons, the one who called the plays for the highest-scoring offense in NFL history in 2013.

Knowing what Gase could tell the Bears’ defensive coaches and players about them, the Broncos’ offensive players went to their teammates to try to offer any tips they could.

“I gave some, but I saw some [new] stuff,” Demaryius Thomas said. “[Jay] Cutler was good at holding the ball a lot longer and making big plays down the field. Some stuff they were covering well, but Cutler did a great job.”

Gase’s challenge was stacked from the get-go, facing the NFL’s No. 1 defense without Matt Forte, Alshon Jeffery or Eddie Royal. His unit still managed 347 total yards, including 261 through the air.

But Denver’s defense, which was missing Demarcus Ware, won on the scoreboard, where the Bears scored their second-lowest total for the year with 15 points. They managed just one touchdown on four red-zone possessions, and the one they did score in the final minute ended at only six points when TJ Ward burst through the line on the two-point attempt to bring Jeremy Langford down right away to seal the win.

Cutler was consistently the wild card to the Denver defense, creating big passing plays.

OPINION Dunkin challenges Madigan in house SPRINGFIELD – Governors, mayors and legislators come and go. House Speaker Michael J. Madigan remains.

He has ruled the Illinois House for all but two of the last 32 years, and the political corpses of those who’ve crossed him pile up with regularity.

But one of his own, Democratic state Rep. Ken Dunkin, strayed recently, and that appears to be frustrating the speaker. Madigan needs every one of his 71 Democrats to show up and stay united if he is to thwart first-term Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

But Dunkin refuses to play.

Three times in the last couple of months, Dunkin has refused to follow the speaker’s lead and let measures important to his party leader die on the House floor.

Madigan rarely speaks ill of any member of his caucus. So, at his last new conference, he brought in three nonlawmakers and let them bad-mouth Dunkin.

Dunkin, on the other hand, marches to his own drummer – some say in a parade of one.

Years ago, he flipped the bird to the entire House when a bill he was sponsoring didn’t pass.

Even in a chamber known for raucous debate, that’s out of line.

Madigan, on the other hand, comes from a world of discipline. He was reared by a strict father, attended Catholic schools and universities, and was mentored by the late Mayor Richard J. Daley. In an oral history released this year by the University of Illinois, this is how Madigan described his relationship with Daley: “He was the commander.

He would give his orders and give his directions. And this is an important point with me. It’s because there was a group of people like myself,

VIEWS Scott Reeder about the same age, that came in as ward committeemen in the early seventies. There was Alderman Burke, Ed Vrdolyak, Tom Hynes, Congressman Lipinski, Alderman Mel and Ed Kelly. This was the group there that came along at about the same time, and if they were being honest with you, they would tell you that they would have trouble living under his methods.

“So they were duly elected to whatever office they held.

After a while, they would think, ‘Well, I ought to be part of the decision-making.’ So they would be troubled by that. ... But with me, I had no trouble with that at all. That was because, to me, the mayor was just a carbon copy of my father.”

That speaks volumes about Madigan.

Dunkin has taken to bypassing Madigan and negotiating directly with the governor.

For example, Rauner said Dunkin persuaded him to raise the eligibility requirement for families receiving child-care subsidies from 50 percent of the poverty level to 162 percent.

In exchange, Dunkin agreed not to support an override that would have stripped governors from making such adjustments in the future.

Overnight, Dunkin became one of the Legislature’s most influential members – at least for the moment.

When South opened one no-trump, showing 15-17 points, North knew the combined values were 32-34 points.

The magic number for six no-trump without a five-card suit or a 4-4 fit is 33. So North drove into slam via Gerber, which asked for aces. North’s alternative was to respond with a quantitative four no-trump. Here South, with a maximum 17 points, would have jumped to six no-trump.

South has 11 top tricks: one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and four clubs. He has two finesses, one in each major suit, that could produce a 12th winner. Declarer hopes to find West with the spade king or heart queen. (If East has both of those cards, the slam would be makable with a squeeze-endplay, but South would need X-ray vision.) Should declarer try spades or hearts first?

The rule is to take the finesse for the higher honor first. So, declarer should lead a spade toward dummy’s queen. Here, that works perfectly, but if East could take dummy’s queen with the king, the heart finesse would still be available.

Note, though, that if South takes a losing heart finesse first, he will fail, whoever holds the spade king.

Better mental health care may prevent future violence Dear Abby: I have listened to our president and various candidates comment on gun control after the shooting at the college in Oregon. Do you remember the saying, “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people”? Gun control is not going to stop this.

What is needed (or at least would help) is more mental health care. It seems every time a person takes the notion to shoot others, someone says, “He was depressed.” Never during the 20 years I have battled depression have I ever wanted to shoot anyone. There have been times when the urge to shoot myself was almost overwhelming, but I never felt like shooting a bunch of strangers.

When the cleaning crew (or janitor) is in the restroom, there is usually a sign posted to that effect. In many cases, if the janitor is a male in a women’s restroom, he will immediately exit the room. However, if that doesn’t happen, it’s then up to the individual to determine if her call of nature is so urgent it must be heeded immediately.
