WILLIAM S. HALTERMAN Born: June 17, 1922; in Morris, IL Died: Nov. 19, 2014; in Mazon, IL William “Bill” Stanley Halterman, age 92, of Mazon, passed away peacefully in his home with his family by his bedside on Wednesday, November 19, 2014. Born June 17, 1922, in Morris, Bill was the son of the late John and Clara (Burkhart) Halterman, third in a family of eight children.

He was raised on a farm in the Mazon area and graduated from Mazon High School. Bill enlisted in the Army Air Corps shortly after graduation and served in the Pacific during World War II. While in the service, he married June Traver on October 31, 1942. After the war, Bill farmed in the Mazon area, building a home on the Traver family farm where he retired. He became a very dedicated farmer and took great joy in his fields of grain. He served for many years on the Land of Lincoln Soybean Board.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Rev. Edward J. Howe, CR officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until time of mass at the church.

He was born on July 9, 1958, in Pontiac, Illinois, the son of William and Patricia (Fraher) Martin. He graduated from St. Paul Catholic Grade School in Odell and from Morris High School, with the class of 1976. He graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in business administration. He worked for Walgreen’s Corporation and various other companies over the years.

He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Michael (Ann) Martin of Stamford, CT and William (Meghan)Martin of Morris; two sisters, Sheila(Thomas) Riccolo and Mary(Terrence) O’Connor both of Morris; nephews, Sean and Brendan Martin and Peter Riccolo; nieces, Caroline Riccolo and Eileen, Erin and Caitlin O’Connor.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; several aunts, uncles and one niece, Regina Elizabeth Martin.

Mark was an avid Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears and Notre Dame fan. He was an outstanding baseball player at Morris Community High School. He enjoyed spending time with his niece and nephews.

American Legion, and was a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lodge. He served on the Mazon High School Board. After retirement, he enjoyed many winters in Bonita Springs, Florida.

He is survived by his wife, June; a brother, John (Miriam); a sister, Marion (Kenneth) Lewis; and three sons, Allen (Virginia), Gary (Sabine), and Kevin (Tamara); eight grandchildren, Dennis, Timothy, Matthew, Ryan, Heather, Heidi, Samuel, Lukas; and twelve great-grandchildren living in Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, and Iowa.

Robert L. Bausano, age 81, of Joliet, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at his home, after a courageous struggle with many illnesses throughout the past few months.

Born March 22, 1933 in Joliet.

Robert “Bob” was the son of Louis and Catherine (Stiglich) Bausano. He was raised and educated in Joliet and went on to honorably serve in the United States Army in the Korean War. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Donna M. (nee Gerlt) Bausano; his children, Susan (Ken) Watson of Morris and Mark Bausano of Joliet; eight grandchildren, Lauren (Jason) Spang of Manteno, Lindsey (Josh) Geiss of Morris, Ken Watson of Chicago, Brandon Bausano of Mountain Home, AR., Dustin Ehrhardt, of Taylorville, IL, Zachary Schuman, Brandon Schuman and Anthony Bausano, all of Joliet; six great-grandchildren, Emma, Sophia and Ryan Geiss and Olivia, Ava and Ella Spang; two sisters, Vivian (the late Raymond) Richardi of Joliet and Mary Kay (John) Brozovich of Minooka; as well as numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

The Grundy County Environmental & Resource Conservation Office in Morris is turned into Santa’s workshop as staff collect toys to give to area children. and box them for delivery.

Cheryl Wardell, an assistant in the Land Use Department, said the department receives both used and new toys each year, and already have been called to pick up the first set of donations from the Morris Area Public Library and the Three Rivers Library in Minooka.

“The new toys we receive go to We Care,” Wardell said. “But we get a lot of used toys in good condition that we donate.”

Tina Brookman, who helps coordinate the toy giveaway at Mazon United Methodist Church, said the church has received items from the toy drive for the last several years and it’s really helped.

“It makes it possible to reach out to more families,” Brookman said. “Last year we were able to help over 300 families.”

Brookman said there are a lot of different scenarios that bring people to her church to

collect used and new toys for their families. She and a group of volunteers have been collecting toys all year, and are already in full swing to help as many local families as they can again this year.

Other toys collected are given to the Grundy County Health Department, where staff members help identify a family in need and help them at Christmas.

Miller said the nursing home allows the department to wash all plush toys that are donated so they can use everything they get safely.

Minooka District 201 votes to reprimand superintendent

By SANDY BOSCH Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka Consolidated School District 201 Superintendent Al Gegenheimer has been reprimanded by the school board for unprofessional conduct.

School board members voted, 6-0, early Thursday morning to formally reprimand Gegenheimer in response to his behavior pertaining to a proposed survey of district parents and remarks made publicly at an Oct. 22 meeting.

The vote came after a lengthy executive session of the regular board meeting Wednesday night. The session continued until after midnight.

The Oct. 22 discussion

consisted of heated verbal exchanges between board members, teachers and the superintendent, board member Doug Martin said. Martin referred to that meeting on his blog, minooka201.blogspot.com, as “a spectacle.”

Gegenheimer is accused of behaving unprofessionally by publicly criticizing board member Kristan Crouch and her work on the survey, reportedly referring to her as “the problem.”

Martin said in his blog the superintendent’s behavior was tantamount to throwing Crouch, who wrote the first draft of the survey, “under the bus.”

Gegenheimer’s criticism of Crouch’s work and of the survey began days earlier, as evidenced

by several emails obtained by Martin through a Freedom of Information Act request. In several emails to district employees and people outside of the district, Gegenheimer refers to the survey as “laughable.”

“It’s a joke (that’s not funny),” Gegenheimer wrote to Walnut Trails Elementary School Principal Kathleen Cheshareck on Oct. 17.

Similar emails were sent to board attorney Barb Erickson and Richard Dombrowski, who reportedly has no direct relationship with District 201.

Gegenheimer, now in his eighth year at the district, said his comments were private, made in response to negative reactions about the survey from the email recipients.

“I’ve never been a troublemaker,” Gegenheimer said Thursday. “If they feel I’ve acted inappropriately, I will take their recommendations and do better not to make future mistakes.”

If those recommendations include a public apology, as suggested in Martin’s Nov. 15 blog post, Gegenheimer said he will comply.

Martin, who made the initial motion to go forward with the reprimand, said Thursday he was pleasantly surprised by the board’s 6-0 decision to address the issue of Gegenheimer and his conduct. Board member Kevin Hannon did not attend Wednesday night’s meeting.

“Essentially, it was undermining the board’s authority,” Martin said. “The board is his

employer.”

The board’s legal counsel was directed to draft the formal reprimand, as well as directives for Gegenheimer to follow. The letter and directives will then be considered for approval by the board.

The official motion to reprimand reads: “That the Board of Education, Minooka Consolidated School District #201, (i) reprimand Superintendent Al Gegenheimer for unprofessional conduct regarding the recent proposed Parent Survey, and (ii) place a Letter of Reprimand including directives (to be drafted by the Board’s legal counsel and approved by the Board) in Mr. Gegenheimer’s personnel file.”

GRUNDY COUNTY INDICTMENTS MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland announced that on Nov. 19 the grand jury has returned the following indictments. Helland’s office reminds the public a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

• Bobby Clater, 49, of San Diego, was indicted for possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony.

• Brittany Currin, 20, of Coal City, was indicted for possession of heroin, a Class

4 felony • Curtis Haugabook, 51, of Morris, was indicted in two counts of possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner Identification Card, both Class 3 felonies; and for violation of an order of protection, a Class A misdemeanor.

• Jennifer Hougas, 42, of Morris, was indicted for possession of hydrocodone, a Class 4 felony.

• Dennis Johnson, 43, of Orland Park, was indicted for driving while license

Officials: Morris man’s death ruled an accident

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris man found dead in his apartment Wednesday afternoon lost his life accidentally, according to officials.

Police were called to 56-yearold Mark Martin’s Liberty Street apartment Wednesday where Martin was found dead. The manner of death was unclear and there were no witnesses to his death, so Morris police called in the state Crime Scene Investigation team for assistance.

An autopsy was performed Thursday morning declaring his death accidental, Grundy County Coroner John Callahan said.

“Results of the autopsy reveal that Mr. Martin came to his death as a result of injuries from a fall within his home and unrelated conditions prevented [him from getting] medical attention to the injuries,” he said.

Callahan said the coroner’s

office has officially closed its investigation.

“Everyone plays a part in the investigation. The coroner has his roll, we have ours, which includes Crime Scene Investigation services,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said. “Once all the information was in and everyone who has a role evaluated it, we were all on the same page that it was an accident and all our investigations are concluded.”

Wednesday afternoon, police sat outside a building on Liberty, which housed the second-story apartment where Martin was found. Crime scene investigators were seen outside the building taking photographs toward the direction of the Morris Area Public Library, as well as down the street and the entryway to the building.

“The CSI services were a huge help in the investigation ... their expertise and involvement was extremely important,” Dite said.

$8 million Brisbon Road reconstruction project still in the planning stage

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County is currently reviewing a draft of an agreement between the county, Morris and Minooka that will help fund the $8 million Brisbin Road reconstruction project.

The cost for the Brisbin Road project includes construction, buying the right of way and engineering. The Grundy County Highway Committee met Thursday and discussed the agreement.

Craig Cassem, county engineer, said Morris and Minooka have seen a draft of the agree-

ment, but neither the village, city or county has seen a final draft.

Almost three years ago, the county unveiled the new Brisbin Road interchange for Interstate 80 after spending several years of planning and securing funding for the multimillion dollar project.

With the new interchange comes more trucks and traffic so the county and municipalities are working on Brisbin Road to accommodate the increased traffic and future growth in the area.

The project, which is currently in its planning stage, will initially construct a new

two-lane road with one lane going northbound and the other going southbound, according to Eric Rasmusson, vice-chairman of the Highway Committee.

Eventually, the two-lane road will be expanded into a four-lane road, with two lanes going northbound and the other two lanes going southbound.

Cassem said the Brisbin Road reconstruction will go from the interchange up to Sherrill Road in Kendall County.

The engineer said Kendall County also is working on reconstructing Sherrill Road.

The draft of the agreement

states Minooka and Morris will charge developers that build along the road and that the money will be sent to the county.

“As developers come in, they’ll be charged per acre,” said Cassem Thursday after the committee meeting. “That money will come back to us for investing in the project.”

Cassem previously said roads that are most heavily used, such as Brisbin Road, and are in need of the most repair are the ones that need to be revamped.

Ron Severson, county board chairman, said Brisbin Road has heavy truck flow each day

and that the reconstruction would divert trucks from entering Morris and allow them to go north up to U.S. Route 52.

“We want to keep the truck traffic off of Route 47 as much as possible,” he said.

The Highway Department estimates spending $10.8 million on projects next year, making 2015 the most expensive project year for Grundy County.

Other Grundy County roads set for improvement projects for 2015 are Ridge and Dupont roads.

These projects are part of the county’s four-year highway plan.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – As Thanksgiving approaches, questions often arise in regards to preparing, cooking and storing turkey and side dishes. The Grundy County Health Department provides a few tips to ensure a safe meal for holiday season.

It is important to plan your menu weeks before the holiday, according to a news release from the health department. A fresh turkey should be bought one to two days before cooking, where as a frozen turkey may be bought at any time.

There are several ways to thaw a frozen turkey. In the refrigerator, it will take about 24 hours per four to five pounds.

A thawed turkey can remain in the refrigerator for one to two days. Or submerge the frozen turkey in cold water

and change the water every 30 minutes. Allow 30 minutes of defrosting time a pound. Cook the turkey immediately after thawing.

Consuming raw poultry can cause illness. Use a food thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey and make sure it reads 165 degrees Fahrenheit throughout. Cooking time is estimated at 20 minutes a pound in an oven at 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is not safe for food to sit out longer than two hours.

Place leftovers in shallow containers and hold in a refrigerator at 41 degrees Fahrenheit or below, or freeze it. In the refrigerator, the food will be good for three to four days and four to six months in the freezer.

OPINION Is this Pope Catholic? The debate heats up With Catholic leaders still sweating after the Extraordinary Synod on the Family firestorm, Pope Francis has once again tried to cool things down – by publicly affirming core church doctrines.

The question, however, was whether Catholics could balance edgy front-page headlines about sex, divorce, cohabitation, homosexuality and modern families with the pontiff’s orthodox sermons, which have received very little ink in the mainstream press.

“We know that today marriage and the family are in crisis,” said Pope Francis, opening this week’s Vatican conference on “The Complementarity of Man and Woman in Marriage.” It drew 300 leaders from many world religions, including Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and several branches of Christianity.

Rather than yielding to the “culture of the temporary,” the pope said, it’s time to stress that “children have a right to

grow up in a family with a father and a mother. ... Do not fall into the trap of being swayed by political notion. Family is an anthropological fact – a socially and culturally related fact. We cannot qualify it based on ideological notions or concepts important only at one time in history. We can’t think of conservative or progressive notions.”

These words came days after an address to the Association of Italian Catholic Doctors in which Pope Francis attacked any “false compassion” that rationalizes abortion, euthanasia and the use of human beings as “guinea pigs.”

“So many times in my life as a priest, I have heard objections. ... ‘Why is the church opposed to abortion?’ for example. ‘It’s a religious problem?’

No, no. It is not a religious problem. ... It’s a scientific problem, because there is a human life and it is not lawful to take out a human life to solve a problem,” he said. The same

This is to say to God, ‘No, the end of life, I do as I want to.’ ” This latest media drama resembles what happened after the famous interview in America and other Jesuit publications in which Francis said, “We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods.” Rather, he added, the church “cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.”

Those words have been frequently quoted as evidence that Pope Francis is seeking a ceasefire in public efforts to defend church doctrines. Yet shortly after that interview, he bluntly told physicians that Catholics must keep proclaim-

ing: “Each child who is unborn, but is unjustly condemned to be aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who, even before he was born, and then as soon as he was born, experienced the rejection of the world.”

Angered by this confusion, many Catholics have blamed the media, arguing that the pope’s words ring true when read in context. Others are more critical, saying this charismatic pope means well, but is naive about how off-the-cuff remarks will be heard in the public square. On the edges of cyberspace, a few critics hint he is a liberal Machiavelli who is steering the church toward public-relations icebergs to force massive doctrinal changes.

A key moment in recent debates came when New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, a doctrinally conservative Catholic, noted Pope Francis has “repeatedly signaled a desire to rethink issues where

Catholic teaching is in clear tension with Western social life – sex and marriage, divorce and homosexuality.”

Any open rejection of established doctrine, he warned in the world’s most powerful newspaper, would “put the church on the brink of a precipice. ... It would sow confusion among the church’s orthodox adherents – encouraging doubt and defections, apocalypticism and paranoia (remember there is another pope still living) and eventually even a real schism.”

Many groups have protested the Washington NFL team and other teams with similar names.

So now our next move as a community should be to apologize and not repeat the offense. Please eliminate the insensitive mascot of Morris Community High School.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com It is becoming one of the more common Thanksgiving traditions, right up there with eating too much, having too many family members in your house and watching the NFL on Thursday during the day.

Yes, the high school boys basketball season is about to tip off with its annual slate of Thanksgiving tournaments.

The Coal City Turkey Tournament has the most area teams, with the hosts, Morris and Gardner-South Wilmington taking part.

Some of the play may not be the quite up to the quality that the teams hope for, as the Morris football team just finished its season and the players who play both sports just started practicing and the Coal City football team is still playing, taking on Chicago Phillips in the Class 4A semifinals Saturday.

Morris has the distinction of playing the tournament’s first game, taking on Gardner-South Wilmington at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Coal City will play at 7 p.m. Monday against Serena. On Tuesday, Serena will take on IC Catholic Prep, which advanced to the Sweet 16 in Class 2A last season, at 5:30, with GSW and Coal City playing at 7. Wednesday features GSW playing Serena at 5:30 and Morris taking on IC Catholic Prep at 7.

The tourney takes Thursday off for Thanksgiving, but resumes Friday at 6, with Serena playing Morris, then Immaculate Conception playing Coal City at 7:30.

The tournament concludes Saturday, as GSW and IC Catholic Prep play at 6, with Morris and Coal City playing the final game at 7:30.

Minooka will take part in the WJOL Tournament, being held at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. The Indians begin play at 8:30 p.m. Monday against Lockport, then play at 3 p.m. Wednesday against Rich East. On Friday night, they play Providence Catholic at 8:15.

in more populated areas my heart nearly stopped. How could that possibly be any fun, let alone productive?

A cold winter’s drive past a thin tree line that I hunted changed my mind.

This particular location is a really small drainage that connects two larger wooded areas. There are houses nearby and a couple of roads that are deceptively busy. Around noon one cold and sunny day, I decided to drive past and see what was going on. To my surprise, bedded down just a hundred feet from the road, were three big whitetail bucks. I have a couple of mounts on the wall that push the 180-inch mark. These deer were knocking on the door of that impressive size.

Here it was, a small tree line that held three massive animals. Yes, they clearly didn’t hang there all the time, but the point is they realized

Within the sprawl of suburbia there are many little parks, forest preserves, and natural areas that harbor scores of wildlife. Not all of these places are open for public hunting, but many of them are. In fact, you might even be lucky enough to know someone that owns a home near one.

Whitetails are amazingly resourceful creatures that can adapt to a variety of landscapes, including one that is cut up by various man-made structures. We need to be just

as flexible as they are.

Another creature that has made the most of urban sprawl is the Canada goose.

This powerful waterfowl has become so engrained in the suburbs that it is often considered a nuisance animal.

The required retention ponds that announce the entrance to yet another subdivision have become paradise for flocks of geese. They are left alone, have few predators in the suburbs, and endless retention ponds to choose from.

I know several hunters that have access to the first big fields near some of these sprawling subdivisions and they talk endlessly about how awesome hunting the suburban bird is. Many fall days the sky is covered with flock after flock moving across the area.

The massive numbers of these homegrown honkers didn’t exist before the urban

sprawl. Sure, we had local geese, but not in the droves that exist today.

There needs to be a fine balance between what humans build and what wildlife needs. Many creatures need vast areas to survive and we have to take that into account. If, however, you find yourself needing to find new places to hunt, don’t forget about the small, wild, areas near urban sprawl.

Some of the best hunts every year take place in the most overlooked places. If you go though, check the state regulations that discuss legal distances from dwellings before you set your stand or pitch your blind. Be safe and good luck.

Morris graduates help North Central College football to 8-2 finish STAFF REPORTS NAPERVILLE – The North Central College football team finished the season with an overall record of 8-2 and a 6-1 record in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

The Cardinals finished No. 15 among NCAA Division III programs for the most recent week and placed 10 on the CCIW All-Conference Team.

Andrew Bordner, a sophomore linebacker from Morris, played regularly, making a start at UW-Stevens Point. For the season, he made 23 tackles (nine solo), including one tackle for loss and set a season high of five tackles against North Park and Carthage. Marc DesLauriers of Morris, a senior offensive lineman, started all 10 games at center as North Central ranked first in the CCIW and 16th in Division III in scoring offense (42.1 points a game). Bell was a state qualifying bowler at Morris, where she was a three-year starter and helped lead both the 2005 and 2007 Redskins to a fourth-place finish at the state tournament.

Bell went on to be a four-year starter at Lindenwood University.

As I drive to work, I pass by a massive new intermodal project. Warehouses sprout like weeds and concrete smothers the ground. More than a thousand acres of farmland succumb to the march of so-called progress.

This same scenario can be seen across the nation. It may not always be the behemoth, garage door speckled warehouses, but it might be a strip mall, or a massive subdivision. Humans build and nature tries to adapt.

As sportsmen, we need to adapt as well. Each of us would love to say that we have limitless acres to roam across and hunt wherever it suits our fancy. That is not the case for most folks. In fact, many of us have had to adapt to hunting in a more urban landscape.

When I first thought about hunting smaller properties or properties that were nestled

Augie Boehm has spent his life playing bridge and the piano. He describes it in the enjoyable “Big Deal” (Bridge World Books).

Boehm writes about the players he knew, some of the famous cheating scandals and the musical shows with bridge themes that he has appeared in and helped to write. He gives the lyrics to some songs, including my favorite, “Overbidder” by Don Simmons, which you sing to the music for “Old Man River.” He also reprints some of his articles, many of which appeared in The Bridge World magazine.

When young, the author played bridge at a Manhattan club known as The Bucket, where he started a lifelong partnership with Richard Margolis, who became a rabbi and is also an excellent player. Margolis found a great bid in this deal from the final day of the 1999 Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams in Boston.

Look at the North hand and the auction. What would you have bid over West’s five diamonds, which showed slam interest in hearts?

It looks obvious to raise to six diamonds, or perhaps even jump to seven diamonds, hoping to bounce your opponents into a hopeless grand slam. Margolis did better -- he bid six clubs. East doubled, North ran to six diamonds, and West doubled that. But the contract was unbeatable! Boehm drew the missing trump and crossruffed home.

Why bid six clubs? Because if the opponents had gone to six hearts, South would have led the club nine, a suit-preference signal for spades. The defense would have gone: club to the ace, spade ruff and club ruff for down two.

New approach to angioplasty involves radial artery in wrist Dear Doctor K: I am scheduled to have an angioplasty next week. The doctor plans to insert the catheter through my wrist. Is there some advantage to doing it through the wrist rather than the thigh?

Dear Reader: Angioplasty is a procedure used to open a narrowed or blocked artery.

Angioplasties are usually done to open up blocked coronary arteries -- the blood vessels that provide blood to the heart muscle.

The blocked coronary arteries lie deep within the chest.

An angioplasty is able to open the blockage without opening the chest. How? By taking advantage of how the body’s blood supply is built.

The heart pumps blood

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff around the body through multiple arteries. Some arteries carry blood from the heart to the legs, and other arteries go from the heart to the arms.

Any artery that carries blood from the heart to the leg or arm is also a highway leading from the leg or arm back to the heart.

During the procedure, a doctor inserts a thin tube called a catheter into a blood vessel. He or she gently maneuvers the catheter through the vessel.

The tip of the catheter is

gently guided up the “highway” from the leg or arm to the heart. Then the tip of the catheter is pushed into the blocked coronary artery. A balloon that is part of the catheter is inflated to open the artery.

Usually a tiny wire mesh stent is placed to keep the artery open.

Most doctors in the United States begin angioplasty at the femoral artery, the large blood vessel at the top of the thigh.

But a growing number of doctors are beginning angioplasty through the radial artery in the wrist. (I’ve put an illustration showing the path from the radial artery to the heart on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

The radial artery is nar-

rower than the femoral artery, which makes it harder to get the catheter inside. However, the radial artery lies right below the skin, whereas the femoral artery is deep beneath the skin. In some people, the femoral artery can be hard to reach.

Once a catheter successfully enters the radial artery, the fact that this artery is narrower becomes an advantage.

When an angioplasty is done through the larger femoral artery, that artery tends to bleed after the catheter is pulled out of the body. You have to lie in bed for several hours with a weight pressing down on the artery.

In contrast, immediately after a radial artery angioplas-

ty, people are able to get up and walk around. They can often go home the same day and resume normal activities by the next day.

Radial angioplasties have been slow to catch on. That may be because most doctors in the U.S. were trained in the femoral approach.

The radial artery is smaller and has more twists and turns, and advancing a catheter through it requires practice.

But once doctors gain experience with the wrist approach, they are likely to use it more often.
