Snow expected this weekend

Meteorologists say temperatures will warm up again next week

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com Residents in Will and Grundy counties will need to bundle up Friday night and prepare for a snowy weekend.

Light rain or snow is expected for Friday evening in both counties, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will be in the mid-40s Friday – with mostly sunny weather in the morning – before dropping to 30 degrees in the evening.

Meteorologists expect several inches of snow for Saturday with temperatures in the mid-30s.

In a hazardous-weather outlook issued Thursday for northwest and northeast Illinois, NWS meteorologists said the snowfall will mainly be north of Interstate 80.

Preliminary forecast snow totals indicate 3 to 4 inches of snow may accumulate in southern Will and Grundy counties. Northern Will County – including Joliet – might have 4 to 6 inches of snow.

Diamond volunteers cook 62 turkeys for meal

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – Last Sunday, Elsie DeWald and other volunteers started preparing for the annual Free Communities Thanksgiving Dinner to be held this Sunday in Diamond by cooking turkeys – 62 turkeys, to be exact.

The turkey roasting started Sunday and was completed Wednesday night, concluding when the last turkey was pulled from the oven.

“It’s a free Thanksgiving dinner put on by a bunch of volunteers and organizations who want to donate to the cause,” DeWald said. “We plan to feed close to 1,200 people this year.”

The dinner started three years ago as a way to feed people in need, according to DeWald. The next thing she knew, it was feeding everyone.

“When it started out, it started as a place for the less fortunate to get Thanksgiving dinner, and then we opened it to everyone,” she said. “It’s a great community atmosphere and a time for friends to get together and have a home-cooked meal.”

“There’s nothing we don’t do – the kids do an awesome job,” DeWald said. “Last year, we served 1,200 meals with an enormous amount of home deliveries.”

She said volunteers from the Scout troops and from D’Orazio Ford in Wilmington drove meals to towns as far away as Elwood and South Wilmington so those who can’t get out of their homes had an opportunity to receive a meal.

She said they deliver enough food to each home to serve two meals so there are leftovers.

They also pack and deliver food to area firefighters and police.

“The first responders are very important to this community, so we take care of them,” she said.

Morris indoor paintball business looks to meet demand, attract national customers

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Five years ago, Ray Smith’s son, Shane, started playing paintball.

With a business background and an eagerness to move away from truck driving, Smith said he looked into paintball as a business opportunity.

“I thought, ‘This is something I could get into,’ ” said Smith, owner of Midwest Paintball Inc. “Everybody needs something to do, to get away from work and stress.

That’s what paintball is – it’s entertainment.”

For the last two-and-a-half years it’s been a long haul, he said, but Midwest Paintball is finally nearing its debut in Morris. The past week, finishing touches were underway on the indoor facility, a former warehouse at 3727 N. Division St. The course is laid out the same way as one in the National Xball League World Cup. Smith said competitors enjoy playing on indoor courses that mirror the course used in the sport’s biggest event – held in Florida every year – because it allows them to be as prepared as possible.

Soon, players from Grundy County and potentially all over the Midwest will duck under and behind 50 inflatable bunkers set up on the course, as they try to dodge paintballs flying through the air at 100 mph.

Groups can reserve time at the course, which actually resembles a smiley face from an aerial view, Smith said.

Smith said he started looking three years ago for properties that would fit his business plan. He looked at 30 to 40 indoor facilities, but identified this one two years ago.

“We walked in and fell in love with it,” Smith said.

“That’s why we’ve been fighting for it. It’s a great fit.”

He even looked into the science of picking a name. A marketing specialist told him the original name he thought of would never allow the business to reach its full potential.

Smith realized how a regional name could attract many people. The name Midwest Paintball has a broader appeal, he said.

“We can have people from five different states driving here in four hours or less,” he said.

Stefi Barnes, who has managed Chicago Damage Inc. and 665 Almost Evil competitive teams with her husband – who is known in the industry as “Q Ball” – will be running the retail desk. She’s not your average front desk person.

Since beginning in 2006 as a supportive mom to her three paintball-playing kids, who are now ages 24, 22 and 18, Barnes said paintball is the family’s lifestyle. For weekend practices, they had to drive at least an hour to indoor facilities amid winter cold or summer heat – until now. They travel with their teams across the nation to compete.

Barnes and her husband have enough gear at their house along Ashley Road to outfit a five-person team.

“I’ll go to [Grundy County] Corn Fest and Morris Cruise Nights and see faces of people I’ve seen on a paintball field,” Barnes said.

Within days, many of those familiar faces and plenty of new ones could be coming into Midwest Paintball. Smith said the opening date and time will soon be announced on Midwest Paintball’s Facebook page and MidwestPaintballInc.com.

Three Rivers Library hosts Family Reading Night More online

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Thursday was Family Reading Night at the Three Rivers Public Library Channahon branch, bringing area mothers, fathers and their children together for an evening of storytelling.

Family Reading Night is an annual statewide event held the third Thursday in November to provide encouragement for families to spend quality time reading together.

It is sponsored by the Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White as well as the Illinois Center for the Book.

Professional storyteller Linda Gorham, who travels the country telling stories ingrained in her memory, began at about 6:38 p.m. and sought to involved the audience.

“Taxpayers sit in the chairs, children sit on the floor,” Gorham requested. “Is it alright if I involve you all in the story?”

They all agreed. Five minutes in, four children were playing characters next to Gorham, and the audience was chanting sound effects in unison. It was part of a story called “Matthew Mark Emanuel Fred.”

“Bump, bump, bump, bump” the group said together as the lead characters walked imaginary stairs.

By the end of the 20-minute story, she had a full cast of 15 to 20 children performing with her. One group played elephants, and another group played dogs who were getting rambunctious in a home.

From 6:15 to 6:35 p.m., Channahon Mayor Missey Schumacher read a few short children’s stories. She asked kids if they knew what a mayor does. While kids replied Schumacher makes some rules and also keeps the community safe, she said she enjoys doing something else even more.

“I get invited to do a lot of cool things, like read to you and some grade schools,” Schumacher said. “That’s because reading is the best exercise for your brain.”

Schumacher read three stories about animals, the sounds they make and how they help

each other. One of the books was titled “The Hiccupotamus” authored by Aaron Zenz about a hippo with serious case of the hiccups.

Firefighter Cindy Wilson, the fire and life safety education coordinator for Minooka and Channahon Fire Protection Districts, began the event

with a presentation from 6 to 6:15 p.m. about fire safety.

Wilson read a story to a group of children gathered on the floor of the library’s teen lounge. She also explained firefighters handle more than fires, noting the district has a boat in case of serious floods.

One child asked if firefighters really save cats from trees.

“All you need to do is put a can of tuna fish at the bottom of the tree and he’ll come down,” Wilson replied.

From 7:30 to 8 p.m., families took part in an all-ages book walk. It was similar to a cakewalk, but with books as prizes.

Families also participated in small raffles.

Minooka D-201 board approves tentative levy

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The Minooka School District 201 Board voted Wednesday to approve the tentative fiscal 2015 levy and set a date for the required public hearing on the matter.

Superintendent Kris Monn said the overall increase is expected to be 16.73 percent more than last year, but may lie in the 12 to 14 percent range.

“I do not want taxpayers to latch onto a set percentage,” Monn said.

Two main areas that will affect the hike are the increased equalized assessed valuation in the county and the need to pay off debt in the district’s tort liability fund.

The estimated EAV increase for the county is 6 to 7 percent, based on preliminary numbers from county offices. Monn said

what the district wants to do with the EAV levy is a balloon levy, which means the number levied will be higher than the preliminary amounts in order to cover any unexpected rises.

The final EAV numbers will not be available until March or April.

“Something could happen to cause more of an increase than expected in the EAV and then we are underfunded for that area. We will use a projected increase of just over 9.54 percent to ensure we levy an amount sufficient to reach our maximum rates,” Monn said.

The tort liability fund had only requested $650,000 in annual taxes, but had expenditures of $1.5 million, which left more than $1 million in deficit.

“In October, the finance committee and board of education requested a tentative levy that both addressed the annual

John Clucas, board vice president, clarified that District 201 runs on one of the lowest operating costs per pupil, and that the district spends less than most in the area.

“We still have to run a school district. We didn’t do anything crazy with this money, we spent what the kids in the schools needed,” Clucas said.

The tentative levy was approved by the board with members Martin and Curt Jebens opposed.

The board also voted unanimously to hold a public hearing at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 16 in the board room at the Minooka Primary Center, 305 W. Church St., Minooka.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity has announced it will move forward with the certification of 49 enterprise zones the Illinois Enterprise Zone Board approved in August.

The zones will go into effect Jan. 1 and will include the Ottawa, LaSalle & Grundy County Enterprise Zone that was set to expire in 2016 and the new Diamond Enterprise Zone.

“What it means for us is two-fold,” said Nancy Norton Ammer, CEO of the Grundy County Economic Development Council. “Our existing industries can continue to grow and prosper, and secondly, we can attract new businesses to the zone and Grundy County.”

The enterprise zone program was created in 1982 to stimulate economic growth and revitalization in depressed areas of the state, according to the IDCEO website.

The zones guarantee sales tax abatements, and local taxing districts are free to negotiate further tax incentives within the stimulus areas.

trator Doug Pryor said he’s pleased the enterprise zone that includes Grundy County is one of the most successful in the state.

“It has helped us create and retain a lot of jobs in the region,” Pryor said.

He said although the use of the zones varies across the state, the original intention was focused on industry and job creation, as well as generating equalized assessed valuation income.

With a change in state law, all of Illinois’ 97 enterprise zones had to be replaced instead of being renewed or extended.

Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc said previously the village has a strategic plan in place for economic development along the Route 113 corridor and the enterprise zone fits with the plan to move forward.

The IDCEO only accepted up to 49 new zones in its first round of applications that were submitted in 2014, according to its website, which means almost half of the existing zones won’t be created in the initial round.

The statute keeps the number of enterprise zones at 97, but will award them during a five-year span.

Born: Aug. 17, 1932; in Morris, IL Died: Nov. 18, 2015; in Morris, IL Anne Burkhardt, age 83, of Gardner, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, at the Morris Hospital.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dwight. Mass of Christian burial will immediately follow visitation at 10:30 a.m. Father Chris Haake will officiate. Burial will be in Goodfarm Cemetery rural Dwight.

Anne was born on Aug. 17, 1932, in Morris, to Clarence and Agnes Sharp Gabel. She married Glenn Burkhardt on Feb. 8, 1953, at Immaculate Conception parish in Morris. He passed away Feb. 13, 2015. They farmed in Mazon then purchased their farm in Goodfarm Township where they

lived for 50 years. Anne stayed at home to raise her children and then worked at Dwight Drugs and the William Fox Developmental Center, where she worked as a tech for 15 years. She enjoyed reading, solving puzzles and solitaire.

She will be missed by her children, Kelly (Mike) Myers, Chris (Andrea) Burkhardt, Michael (Janifer) Burkhardt; her grandchildren, Ryan Myers (special friend GeorgeAnn Ryan), Kevin Myers (special friend, Melissa Busch), Isabella Burkhardt, Austen Tankersley, Bailey Tankersley, Ashton Burkhardt, Landon Burkhardt; and her siblings, Kathleen Starks, Delores Bryant, Elizabeth Lindahl, Paul (Marilyn) Gabel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Agnes Gabel.

NANCY J. LEINWEBER Nancy Jean Leinweber, age 86, of Carbon Hill, passed away, November 14, 2015 at her home.

Nancy Jean was a daughter

of Harry and Gertrude Hildebrandt-Mattull.

She was raised and educated in Chicago, and was a 1946 graduate of James H. Bowen HS. On December 22, 1948, Nancy married William “Bill” Leinweber in Chicago.

All of their married life they lived together in Chicago and Glen Ellyn, prior to moving to Carbon Hill.

Nancy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chicago and the Ladies VFW Auxiliary in Western Springs. In years past, she was active with the Boy Scouts of America, and will most be remembered for her love of her grandchildren.

Survivors include sons, Keith (Donna) Leinweber of Genoa and Lee Leinweber of Carbon Hill; daughters-in-law, Barbara Leinweber of Braidwood and Erin Leinweber of Wheaton; grandchildren, Sara, Katie, William T., Mary Grace, Brehan, Chaz and Jason; and great grandchildren, William K., Carleigh and Michael.

Nancy was preceded by her parents; husband; son, Kurt; and seven brothers and sisters.

Private graveside services were held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, where Nancy was laid to rest with her husband, Bill. Rev.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com SOMONAUK – In each of its first three games at the SomonauK Breakout Tournament this week, the Seneca girls basketball team fell behind early and had to fight its way out of a hole the rest of the way.

Thursday, it did something different and got off to a quick start against Somonauk. They led, 28-22, midway through the third quarter, but a combination of Somonauk’s Madison Kawall and an offense gone cold conspired against Seneca, and Sonomauk rallied to hand the Irish (0-4) a 41-35 defeat.

Seneca led, 11-10, at the end of the first quarter, and extended its lead to 24-16 at halftime.

However, Somonauk responded by outscoring the Lady Irish, 25-11, in the second half, including a 16-7 advantage in a fourth quarter that saw Kawall score 12 of her game-high 20 points.

“In the first half, we were able to convert in transition and get out to a lead,” Seneca coach Barb Beck said. “We haven’t done much in transition in the first three games, so that was definitely a plus for us early on tonight.

“But, we weren’t able to muster much of anything offensively in the second half.

We were impatient on offense and we got outhustled to a lot of balls. And, when you only score two baskets in 16 minutes of basketball like we did in the second half, you aren’t going to beat many teams.”

Despite scoring only four points in the third quarter, Seneca entered the fourth with a 2825 lead and extended it to 30-25 when Claudia Paulson made a pair of free throws.

That’s when Kawall took over. The 5-foot-7-inch junior scored on a putback to pull Somonauk to within three points at 30-27, then teammate Kaitlynn Boczko added a putback basket of her own at the five-minute mark to make it 3029. Kawall then scored a pair of baskets in a 19-second span to put Somonauk ahead 33-30 be-

Chicago hopes to find undrafted gems like Broncos CB Chris Harris

Yet arguably its best player wasn’t drafted at all – All-Pro cornerback Chris Harris Jr. “He came to our spot and was very competitive and willing to learn,” said John Fox, partially responsible for the Broncos’ acquisition of Harris from the University of Kansas four seasons ago. “… It showed first on the kicking game like most players on the entry level. He kept flashing and kept doing good things so he got more opportunities on defense. He’s really flourished ever since. On the final cutdown he was a guy who actually beat out a draft pick who was drafted the year before we got there. I have a tre-

mendous amount of respect for what he accomplished. He’s a tremendous competitor.”

Adam Gase called the AllPro Harris a “shutdown corner often asked to track opposing receivers from the boundary to the slot, the rarest of rare by NFL standards.

Coincidentally, the Bears’ nickel corner in the past three games, undrafted rookie Bryce Callahan, made the 53-man roster after they cut veteran Tim Jennings before beginning his Bears tenure on special teams and eventually replacing Sherrick McManis as the defense’s 12th starter.

Like Harris, Callahan stands 5-foot-10 and, in college, played Rice’s “star spot,” not unlike what Harris does in Denver – “wherever their star receiver was, if he was in the slot, I’d go play man,” said Callahan. “But I never played nickel until I got here.”

Tables turned on Madigan in House “He seems so done with it all,” a top Republican said early last week about House Republican Leader Jim Durkin.

“He hates this,” said a close Durkin pal not long afterward.

The overtime session’s constant battles with the House Democrats and super-strict marching orders from Gov. Bruce Rauner were wearing Durkin down, said some folks who know him. “This summer was pretty nasty,” he admitted to reporters last week.

But that changed by last Tuesday. Asked to describe the progress of the previous few days on a scale of one to 10, a cheery Durkin replied “eight, nine, 10.” Meanwhile, House Speaker Michael Madigan clearly had a very bad week.

Madigan, who long has been considered the most successful Democratic politician in Illinois history, had hoped to finally knock down the Republican Rauner’s solid GOP legislative wall on Nov. 10 and force the House Republicans to defy their governor by voting to rescind Rauner’s slashing of the state’s child care program and social services for the elderly and disabled.

But the rug was pulled out from under Madigan. With the approval of Democratic Senate President John Cullerton, some Democratic legislators cut a deal with the governor to restore funding to those programs in exchange for killing the legislation. Madigan’s bills went nowhere.

Instead of a defeated leader Durkin, we saw an angry speaker Madigan. And while the speaker obviously was upset at one of his own members, Rep. Ken Dunkin, for working with Rauner and killing the bills in the House by refusing to vote, Madigan also was said to be pretty darned steamed about a possible conspiracy

A top Madigan ally pointed to the personal relationship between Rauner and Emanuel, the number of contributors to Emanuel’s campaign fund who also gave to Rauner’s campaign fund as well as to the allegedly “Democratic” IllinoisGO PAC, which was founded earlier this year to promote “pro growth” Democratic policies, but which looks to many like a Rauner front group.

The mayor’s people flatly denied they had anything to do with Madigan being triangulated by Rauner and Cullerton. Yes, Emanuel canceled a scheduled city council hearing on the funding crisis at the child care program, which was designed to put even more pressure on Rauner. But that was done because Rauner had asked they show a little good faith after Emanuel spent a solid week attacking the governor in the media. And Cullerton probably was just doing what Cullerton always does. The man truly loves making deals.

The overtime session has succeeded at collapsing the governor’s poll numbers, but Madigan hasn’t been able to take advantage of that in his own chamber. The one thing Madigan hates above anything and everything else is showing weakness. He most definitely didn’t look strong last week.

He’s simply not accustomed to that. His next move should be fascinating.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Amend the Second Amendment

To the Editor: What’s taking our government so long to add a restriction to a perfectly good amendment that was satisfactory back at the time our founding fathers implemented the Bill of Rights in our Constitution?

I’m referring to the Second Amendment that reads like this: “A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”

To this day, interpretation continues to exist but the essence prevails that people can own and carry arms (weapons) if they so desire.

That’s fine with me. But that was then. People didn’t abuse that privilege because life was so simple, and there was no need to be more specific in wording.

This is now. Look at where we stand in the world as a progressive nation, the United States of America. We’ve developed technologies that should not have been implemented until some mode of employment existed to

compensate for lack of work. Idleness breeds crime. Crime in turn involves the use of arms, mostly guns.

In Chicago, Obama’s hometown, gangs prevail extensively and war against each other, often killing or maiming innocent people not even involved. The Second Amendment allows them to do this because there are no restrictions on owning and carrying a firearm.

Come on. Revise the Second Amendment keeping current wording [but add] “unless such use results in destruction.”

As our nation continues to progress, our rights need to be amended with such restrictions as necessary, or else we’ll continue to flounder. The states need to have the legal right to prevent a person from owning and using a gun if his intent is to do bodily harm or to kill animals for pleasure.

Mr. President, update the Second Amendment to conform to current conditions.

Today’s deal was about finding the right suit fit. How should the auction have proceeded, if at all, after South rebid two hearts? (Yes, he might have overbid slightly with three hearts. The most accurate rebid was two-and-ahalf hearts!)

North’s first decision was: pass or two spades? If South was 5-4 in the majors, two spades, the 5-2 fit, probably would have played better than two hearts, a 4-3 fit. But if South had a minimum 5-5, passing rated to be the winner. The key, though, was the strength of North’s hand. If South had enough power to bid a third time, North had sufficient to accept the game-try. So, North correctly rebid two spades.

At the table, South now jumped to four spades. This was a clear error, given that North couldn’t have three spades, because she would have responded two spades, not one notrump. South should have continued with three (or four) hearts, which would have got them to four hearts, a contract that would surely have made.

Four spades was another matter.

West led the club king, then made the excellent continuation of the club 10 to pin South’s eight. South ruffed the third club, cashed the diamond king, played a heart to the queen, threw a heart on the diamond ace and ran the spade jack. Now the roof fell in. West won and led her fourth club, on which East discarded his heart jack. The contract went down three.
