HOWARD S. PARKS Howard S. Parks, age 63, passed away Monday, November 17, 2014, at his late residence in Morris, IL following a long and courageous battle with congestive heart failure.

Born in Chicago, a long time California resident relocating to Morris five years ago. Former owner and operator of three Gingiss Formalware Franchises in California.

Former Adjunct teacher at Joliet Junior College in the computer science lab, in the (CAD) department.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Morris. Preceded by his father, Norman Bormet (2009).

Survived by his loving mother, Phyllis (nee Fiore) Bormet of Morris; one sister, Phyllis (Quentin) Mueller Blome of Woodstock, IL; one brother, William A. (Lorraine) Parks of Cedar City, Utah. Many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Howard S. Parks will be Thursday, November 20, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Jackson Street, Morris. Rev. Roy Backus officiating. Interment Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Tinley Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the First Presbyterian Church in his name would be appreciated.

Howard will lie in state Thursday morning at the church from 9:00 a.m. until time of services.

WILLIAM B. RANSLEY Born: Aug. 4, 1930; in Morris, IL Died: Nov. 14, 2014; in Morris, IL William “Bill” B. Ransley, 84, of Verona, passed away Friday, November 14, 2014, at the Morris Hospital. Born on August 4, 1930, in Morris, Bill is the son of the late Frank Burdette and Isa (Sutton) Ransley.

He was a graduate of Mazon Township High School with the Class of 1948. After graduating from high school he began working on the family farm until he joined the United States Army. After serving his country he came back and continued to work the family farm.

Bill was an active mason serving in the Mazon Lodge #826 A.F.& A.M. for over 50 years.

Survived by one sister, Marilyn (George)Tjardes of Foosland, IL; two nieces, Jan (Larry) Pfeiffer of Carlinville, IL, Jane (Eric) Noyd of Geneseo, IL; and nephew, Phillip (Jayne) Tjardes of Gibson City; two great nieces, Ashley ( David) Hedge of Franklin, TN, Taylor Tjardes of Palatine, IL; three great nephews, Jeremy Tjardes, student at Iowa State, Lane Pfeiffer of Carlinville, IL and Erin Pfeiffer of Carlinville, Il. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Isa Ransley.

Visitation will be held on Saturday November 22, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home located at 301 West Washington Street. Masonic services will begin at 12:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Bill’s Life conducted

by Pastor Jill Bunker. Burial will be at Ward Cemetery in Verona.

Memorials may be made in Bill’s name to the Ward Cemetery Association or donor’s choice.

Grundy County election results are officially in

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The official results of the Grundy County elections are in and although the winners declared in the Nov. 4 election have not changed, some candidates gained more votes.

The closest race where the calculation of absentee and provisional ballots could have made a difference in a county race was for one of the Grundy County Board District 1 seats.

The race between Republican candidates incumbent John Almer and newcomer Don Neushwander Jr. was close. The official results show Neushwander still taking the seat with 2,983 votes and Almer with 2,969 votes.

The other two seats went to

Republican incumbent Millie Dyer with 3,181 votes and Democrat incumbent Ken Iverson with 3,142.

The county’s most contested race – Grundy County Sheriff – saw winner Sheriff Kevin Callahan, D-Morris, with 8,885 votes and opponent Kevin Briley, R-Minooka, with 7,681.

In the Grundy County clerk’s race, Kay Olson, D-Morris, won with 8,523 votes against opponent Mary Michael Roth, R-Morris, with 7,845 votes. The Grundy County treasurer’s race was almost 900 votes apart with Lori Werden, R-Morris, winning with 8,617 votes against incumbent Marcy Miller, D-Morris, with 7,720 votes.

MORRIS – We Care of Grundy County is moving on up, increasing the space it has to serve people five-fold.

Denise Gaska, executive director of We Care, said the organization is excited to be able to move from its current Illinois Avenue location – which is 3,500 square feet – into its new building at 534 Bedford Road which will give them 18,000 square feet.

“In 2007 when we bought the current location, it fit our food pantry needs,” she said.

“We serve more people now and we outgrew the space.”

She said We Care also has plans to offer more services to residents of Grundy County and the added space will allow that to happen.

In addition to the food pantry offered, We Care also will have a clothes closet and may even be able to add furniture or appliances to be given to clients.

“I’m happy to have this new building because of being able to have a clothes closet,” We Care employee Wendy Easson said. “It’s also big enough to start other programs. We can help many more people with more space.”

The building was bought for $200,000 and the closing took place Wednesday morning.

The former hair salon will be converted to a clothes donation center, where items dropped off will be sorted, washed and dried, and put in bins until needed to stock the clothes closet shelves.

The building also has loading docks, which Gaska said will allow them to take bigger donations from sources like warehouses.

“We hope to put in a walkin cooler and freezer so we can accept larger donations and offer a milk program to our clients who pick up food monthly,” Gaska said.

The building We Care is leaving at The CanalPort Community Center won’t sit idle for long though. Gaska said it has been sold to another local nonprofit agency in the community.

The CanalPort Community Center is a condominium-style suite of properties that was sold to local nonprofits that needed large spaces at a low cost to effectively accomplish their missions and establish a permanent presence in Grundy County.

Grundy County Board OKs capital project fund ed revenues are $14.7 million and expenditures are estimated at $14.8 million.

Between revenue and transfers from other funds, the cash balance for the end of the fiscal year is about $9.4 million.

A new generator is part of the upcoming projects. It will give power to the entire administration building and will be installed in December.

The existing generator, which only gave power to a portion of the county building, used too much oil and operated inefficiently during a power outage June 30. It finally broke in September.

John Galloway, chairman of the Grundy County Board Finance Committee, said the generator replacement project is a big deal for the administration building because the health department and morgue have requirements that must be met.

“The morgue needs refrigeration for the bodies and the health department needs refrigeration for medicines,” Galloway said. “The health department has requirements imposed on them by the state that certain medications have to be refrigerated at all times, so they need electricity no matter what. That’s why it’s im-

The funding for these projects is included in the 2015 capital project fund, which has $480,000 in it. Of that, $330,000 is dedicated for capital projects.

In the new fund for 2015, $481,679 was transferred to it from the general fund. The cash balance expected at the end of the year is $1,679.

David Welter, vice chairman of the County Board, said the county had a capital project fund for the 2014 budget, as well, and that it created a new one for the upcoming projects.

“We haven’t really had much capital development in some time. Some projects are long overdue,” Welter said.

“We put the money in its own separate fund. We didn’t have to put it in the general operating budget.”

MORRIS DAILY HERALD SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House of Representatives formally adopted on Wednesday a resolution introduced by state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, in memorial of the late Grundy County Sheriff Terry Marketti in honor of his years of service and dedication to the people of Grundy County.

The resolution, HR 1303, was adopted by a unanimous vote, according to a news release from Anthony’s office.

“Sheriff Marketti served the people of Grundy County with distinction,” Anthony said in the release.

He added removing asbestos off certain piping in the building is important because asbestos, typically used for insulating pipes, is cancerous and can be airborne.

Other proposed projects included in the capital project fund are the removal of a tower at the Grundy County Animal Control Building, replacing the fence around the generator at the administration building, construction of a receptionist office in the county health department and more.

Morris Elementary advisory committee shares its findings Committee presented five recommendations for district

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Citizens Financial Advisory Committee formed last spring for the Morris Elementary School District board presented five recommendations Monday night.

“The financial outlook was looking a little dicey and the district wanted community involvement,” said Jim Ringer, committee representative. “It’s not so much the magnitude of the change, but the direction it’s going.”

The first of the five recommendations was to restructure the district’s 2005 bond and go forward with refunding, and to add or commit TIF money to the sinking fund for the purpose of offsetting two years of increase in the levy in 2019 and 2020.

The second recommendation was to limit expenses. The committee suggested using business analytics to analyze comparable districts and look at salary and benefits, personnel and positions, as well as outsourcing versus in-house services.

A third recommendation was to form a health insurance committee with people knowledgeable in health care and the Affordable Care Act to explore multi-tiered health plans.

The fourth was to continue to explore cost-sharing opportunities with other local districts through the Shared Services Committee, including technology services, business services and food service.

The last recommendation was to conduct an outside evaluation of Shabbona Middle School’s roof project and do an additional evaluation on the Shabbona wall project.

Ringer said it is up to the board to decide how to move forward with the information it was provided.

The committee’s original report was made in 2005 by an advisory committee formed in 2004, after Midwest Generation closed, causing a 50 percent revenue loss for the district.

This had a dramatic effect on the district, Superintendent Teri Shaw said. That report guided the district for the past decade.

The district wanted to use this tool again to take a look at its financial options. The district is facing numerous financial obstacles including declining equalized assessed values in the area resulting in lower property taxes to the district, behind state revenue payments, and impending bond payments.

The committee was made up of 13 members, which included community members, board members and district staff.

“Our mission is to support District 54 by investigating and identifying new income and expense opportunities by studying the budget, meeting monthly and reporting to the board,” Ringer said.

The committee looked at internal factors the district has some control over, such as its TIF agreement, contract negotiations and class sizes, as well as external factors it has no control over, including the state budget crisis, declining EAV and unfunded state mandates.

The school board unanimously approved the changes. After the meeting, board member Mark French, who leads the Curricular Committee, said many were logical changes made to allow a better progression for the students, including the prerequisites added to some advanced placement classes in order to ensure students enrolling would be better prepared for their rigors.

French said two of the new offerings are physical education leadership classes – one for juniors and one for seniors.

They will not need additional staff or incur extra expenses.

Wikoff said the school did not have a music honors program and he is glad to get one started.

The program does not consist of new classes. Students enroll in wind ensemble, wind symphony, women’s chorale or concert choir along with students who will not be in honors, and they will get extra responsibilities, such as participating in IMEA auditions, journal-writing, performing solos and attending college-level performances.

Principal Matt Wikoff said the leadership classes were designed for students who are planning on going into careers in physical education or other teaching fields or who want to develop their leadership skills.

Juniors will study the book “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader,” and will examine underclassmen P.E. course objectives.

Seniors will work closely with one P.E. teacher and will lead underclassmen through fitness testing and will officiate competitive activities.

Another change in the class lineup for next year will be individual semester offerings of foundations of culinary, baking and pastry arts, and restaurant management.

Wikoff said these classes previously were offered all together under the heading of “Introduction to Culinary Arts.”

MINOOKA – In a unanimous vote, the Minooka Community High School District Board of Education on Tuesday approved its intent to issue $12 million in working cash fund bonds to help with its operating costs.

A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for before the board’s regular Dec. 18 meeting, after which a vote could be taken on the bond issuance.

Board member and finance committee chairman Karen Buchanan said the vote could be taken in December or during the board’s January meeting, and the amount of the bonds issued may be less than $12 million.

“This will be a short-term debt that we will pay off in a three-year period,” Buchanan said.

Buchanan added this was the first time in several years the district has had to borrow to pay day-to-day operating expenses.

Board member Mark French said it is the continuation of declining equalized assessed valuation of property in the district that is depleting the district’s funds, as it has been in most local schools, he said.

“It’s a way for us to minimize the decrease in the EAV,” French said after the meeting.

The high school district is operating with an annual deficit. This year, that deficit will be $3.5 million.

Revenues are projected to total $35 million, and expenditures are projected at $38.5 million. The district has been spending more than it has been taking in for at least three years, according to Finance Director John Bryk, but the end balance of each fund is still expected to be positive at the end of the fiscal year, which is June 30.

In a previous meeting, Bryk said that if expenditure projections continue, and if the equalized assessed valuation of property doesn’t increase quickly, the surplus end balances in the funds could end in about 18 months. The EAV, he said, is expected to drop by 5 percent this year, and the district is maxed out on its tax rate.

One expense that will be reduced next summer is executive administrative salaries, which includes pay for superintendents and the administrative assistant and has risen 55 percent this year because of dual superintendent salaries. The board this week had to approve an administrative cost waiver because costs of administrative salaries have increased by more than 5 percent.

The board also has instituted other means of saving dollars.

Bryk said for the past two years, the district has implemented a $2.1 million per year expenditure reduction plan, and there will be about $300,000 in additional reductions and savings this year, such as reducing costs of transportation and reducing the athletic trainer from full time to part time.

Cyd Notter, a certified health coordinator with Ohiobased The Wellness Forum, learned that the hard way.

Twenty years ago, Notter became interested in animal welfare, eliminating meat from her diet and substituting with cheese and even junk food.

Notter’s cholesterol increased, and her bone health and iron stores declined, she said.

Today, Notter advocates a plant-based diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. The Wilmington resident shares her knowledge and experiences, teaching classes and hosting quarterly potlucks.

“I like to do a nutrition quiz as an ice-breaker,” Notter said.

three ounces of chicken, fish or beef?”

People tend to say, “beef,” Notter said, although each of these animal products has similar amounts of cholesterol. Notter also believes excess calcium contributes to heart disease, accelerates aging, stiffens joints and accelerates bone loss.

“It’s a big shock for people to hear that calcium is bad for bones,” Notter said.

In 2007, Notter was certified as a health coordinator for The Wellness Forum. In 2011, Notter became certified in plant-based nutrition through the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies.

Since a plant-based diet is low in fat – all fats, even the ones promoted as being healthful, Notter said – people often want to know, “Won’t all those carbohydrates make me fat?” The answer, Notter said, is “no.”

“Carbohydrates don’t make you fat. Fat makes you fat,” Notter said. “Eating starches fills us up.”

Skeptical? A person would burst if he tried eating several cups of black bean soup, Notter said. Yet it’s not just whole grains and legumes that comprise “good carbohydrates” (as opposed to pastry rolls and white bread, Notter said).

Even the oft-maligned potato – just 100 calories plain – is permissible in this diet. It’s only when potatoes are loaded with butter, sour cream, grated cheese and bacon bits that they become unhealthy.

“Try topping your potatoes with chili, mushroom gravy or a healthy soup,” Notter said.

“You can even buy healthy soup. You don’t have to make it.”

Notter said many of her clients saw vast improvement in health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, headaches and sleep apnea – some to the point of no longer needing medication, she added. Notter herself rarely has a cold, she said.

But isn’t eating a plant-based diet boring – or complicated?

Again, the answer is “no” to both, Notter said. At a recent quarterly potluck dinner at Notter’s house, guests brought stuffed peppers, tamale pies and pizza, she said.

For ordinary days, a menu can be as simple as oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, minestrone soup and salad for lunch, and bean burritos or sweet potato lasagna for dinner, Notter said.

“We’re not deprived by any means,” Notter said, “but it’s common for people to think it’s all tree bark and celery sticks.”

MORRIS – The death of a 56-year-old Morris man is under investigation, but authorities say foul play is not believed to be the cause.

Mark Martin was found deceased in his apartment on Liberty Street on Wednesday afternoon after police were called to the scene.

An investigation is underway, but foul play is not suspected, Grundy County Coroner John Callahan said in a news release sent Wednesday evening.

Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said earlier Wednesday the public’s safety is not in danger.

“Illinois State Police were called based on some evidence at the scene, but again at this time I’m comfortable in saying that I believe this to

Morris high school students get a ‘Clue’ MORRIS DAILY HERALD

MORRIS – Morris Community High School was the “crime scene” for the third annual Clue Mystery Game on Oct. 31.

Organized by Media Assistant Tiffany Morrison, the event hosted “suspects” played by teachers, who spent the day dressed as their Clue character, and students, who were the “detectives.”

Students spent time before school, during passing periods and at lunch searching for clues.

The game started before school, with all the suspects surrounding the “victim,” school resource officer Steve Huettemann, with the possible “murder weapons” for all the students to see.

Missing from the scene was the priceless statue of Abraham Lincoln.

Students had all day to solve the “murder,” but three students solved it within a couple of hours.

It was Christina Gray with the horseshoe.

ICS students participate in contest MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Fifty-two Immaculate Conception School students in fifth through eighth grades recently participated in the Illinois Elementary School Association Speech Contest hosted by Richland School.

Students presented their selection before a judge and an audience. After the presentation, judges gave the students a rating for their performance, according to a news release from the school.

Jillian Munsell was awarded first place in the original script category. Entries receiving a first-place rating for performance of a regular duet were Shaelee Ferrari and Lydia Gile, Rhett Barkley and Duncan Collard, Macy Rodgers and Shaelye Varner, Stephanie Kruse and Sydney Thuente, Brooklyn Boykins and Maddy Castillo, and Isabelle Horkey and Zachary Zarbock.

Both small groups are recognized on the Illinois Elementary School Association website.

Judge’s Choice winners are awarded special certificates.

All those participating in speech receive either a medal or a ribbon.

An assembly to honor I.C.S. speech contestants will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the gym.

Cellular Connection donates to food banks MORRIS DAILY HERALD CHANNAHON – The Cellular Connection stores will be donating at local food banks through its “Stop the Hunger” campaign this holiday season, including the Channahon store.

Through Dec. 13, participating stores are encouraging families to bring in canned and boxed food, which will be delivered to the community’s food bank.

The participating local store is at 27243 Saxony Drive, Suite D, Channahon, according to a news release from the company.

In addition to the food drive, each store will donate funds, and employees will volunteer at local food banks until the end of December. “ ‘Stop the Hunger’ is the newest initiative under TCC’s ‘Culture of Good’ movement, which empowers employees to make a positive, charitable impact in their communities,” said Scott Moorehead, pres-

Morris student enrolled to University of Iowa IOWA CITY, IA – Jonathan Turman, a native of Morris, is officially enrolled as a member of the University of Iowa Class of 2018.

The undergraduate class is the largest and most diverse first-year class in UI history and is extremely academically accomplished, according to a news release from the school.

Among the record-setting academic achievements of the first-year class includes having 523 Old Gold Scholarship recipients. Old Gold Scholars must have a 30 ACT, (or combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1330), as well as a 3.80 GPA. The class also has the highest-ever average high school GPA of 3.63.

The skies were ominously dark as the heavens opened.

It was a downpour over the island of Nassau, in the Bahamas, just hours after the Nov. 9 plane crash death of Myles Munroe, his wife and seven others.

As far as anyone in Nassau was concerned, it was the only appropriate weather.

Munroe was the senior pastor of the Bahamas Faith Ministries International Fellowship; he died on his way to a Christian leadership conference he was headlining.

When I arrived on Nassau only hours after the crash that tragically ended his life, the island was replete with shock, anguish and tribute.

The weather may have been a coincidence, but it was certainly poetic. Poetic, too, in a way, was that he died with his wife at his side, as men, women and marriage were topics close to the heart of his ministry.

In a recent book, “The Purpose and Power of Love and Marriage,” Munroe had asked about marriage: “Will the institution of marriage survive the onslaught of negative reports, horror stories and the proponents of radical society change who promote the idea that marriage has outlived its usefulness and value to human society?”

He contended: “It is my belief that no matter how advanced man may become in science, technology, systems and knowledge, he can never improve on the foundational precepts of marriage as the bedrock of social development.”

And even though modern society tends to look upon

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez such claims with skepticism, Munroe concluded with confidence: “It is my conviction that marriage is such a good idea, only God could have thought of it.”

Now, while you may not agree with that, surely you do see the misery in our midst.

Many people don’t know what a successful marriage looks like, never having seen one.

People frequently think marriage is unattainable and even undesirable.

People reject it or seek to rework it as something it is not.

Of course, if you Google Munroe’s name, some headlines mark his death with the likes of “Preacher who outraged many with his views on women and gays.”

While I can’t pretend to be an expert on everything that the man said, my recent quick study – having been introduced to his thought the morning after his death – primarily has been an immersion in practical ideas to help mend our ailing culture.

In the most general and confident terms, Munroe saw in the human person tremendous potential for creation.

And so he gave thanks to God, to a creator who knows us better than we know ourselves, and had a plan in mind when he created us as man and woman.

In a time where all too many people settle for shallow distractions or empty bromides, Munroe did his

part to be a servant, to make the world a more meaningful and kinder place.

The truth is, we can’t afford to be a post-marriage culture.

Talking about men, women, marriage and children can seem controversial, but it also is crucial.

As an opening video for the ecumenical Humanum conference convening in Rome this week – with a welcome from Pope Francis – puts it, “the God who created the universe created human sexuality.”

Quite bluntly, as one speaker explained: Man and woman “fit.”

In an interview that has become more popular in his death than in his life, Munroe talked about emptying oneself out in sacrificial love for God and others: “Don’t die old, die empty. That’s the goal of life. Go to the cemetery and disappoint the graveyard.”

And don’t be afraid, as has been said, to pursue, protect, defend and nourish the truth about the good life, one that makes sense and helps us fruitfully flourish together.

The Rev. Myles Munroe emptied himself in loving service, spreading the word of eternal wisdom and design.

Will we do that, too? Will we welcome, encourage, celebrate and protect those who do?

Their data confirms 14,811 property damage accidents, six fatalities and 617 injuries involving deer in 2013. IDOT and IDNR figures confirm most deer-vehicle crashes occur on rural roadways at twilight or nighttime.

Motorists cannot stop deer from wandering on roadways, but they can control how they react when animals suddenly appear.

Slow down, blast the horn and stop to let the animal pass if possible. If not, firmly grasp the steering wheel, stay in your lane of traffic, and brace for the impact.

Never swerve to avoid hitting a deer.

Crashing into a deer can mean serious vehicle damage.

Accidents with property damage of $1,500 or more must be reported to police. Drivers with the appropriate physical damage insurance coverage can share repair costs with an insurance company.

Redskins shooting for school-record sixth straight winning season

L

ast season, the Morris boys basketball team went 17-10 to mark its fifth straight season with more than 15 wins, the first time that has happened in school history. It also was the fifth consecutive season with a winning record. The last time the Redskins had five straight winning seasons, you have to go back to the 1959-60 through 1963-64 seasons.

With a strong nucleus of guards returning and a host of promising big men, coach Joe Blumberg’s team hopes to extend the winning tradition to a school-record six seasons. It won’t be easy, as some of the key contributors just finished up a quarterfinal run in football.

“We are roughly one week behind in terms of preparing for the season with the deep playoff football run,” Blumberg said. “We have been missing six of our 16 guys, and we expect four, five or all six to contribute when they get their basketball legs. Of the 10 we do have, three are nursing injuries, so it’s been tough to get any 4-on-4 work done, let alone 5-on-5 action.”

Guards Austin Patterson and Evan Bjelland will be the leaders in the backcourt. Patterson, a 6-foot-3 senior, averaged 15.6 points and 5.8 rebounds a game last year. He hit 95 3-pointers and was a unanimous All-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference selection. He also made the Coal City Thanksgiving and Plano Christmas Classic all-tournament teams, in addition to advancing to the state finals in the 3-Point Showdown.

“In my mind, Austin is one of the best perimeter shooters in the state,” Blumberg said. “He has added muscle mass to get through the grueling season and will be a tough matchup for opponents.”

Bjelland, a 6-0 senior, averaged 8.3 points and 2.3 assists a game and was named honorable mention All-NIB 12.

“Evan handles the ball extremely well and sees the floor,” Blumberg said.

“In his fourth year as a varsity player, we expect his big-game experience to pay dividends in hostile environments on the road in our conference.”

Another senior guard is 5-10 senior Jake Walker, who is coming in from the football team. Walker averaged 9.4 points a game last year.

“Jake gives us that third guard that can create shots on the perimeter,” Blumberg said. “He’s a hard-nosed kid

“Bad players fight for their role,” Blumberg said. “Good players accept their role. Great players dominate their role. Roles will change as we fill out our roster. We knew we have three consistent scorers on the perimeter.

We need the post players to step up and become great rebounders, lane defenders and screeners for our scorers.

“With Griffin’s athleticism, Jackson’s physical strength, the size of Jurasits and Nicholson and the experience of Jacob Brady, we think we have the pieces and potential to surprise some people with our inside scoring ability. Eight points and eight rebounds a game is a huge boost for a team. How difficult is eight and eight? It’s one garbage bucket a quarter and one rebound at each end per quarter.”

As far as goals, the Redskins have two main ones: Win the NIB 12 and win a regional title.

“Championships are something we talk a lot about,” Blumberg said. “One involves playing well over the course of three months. The other involves getting hit at the right time. Our daily reminders to get better, improve fundamentally and play better together should allow us to contend for both.”

The Redskins’ schedule will do them no favors, as they play six Class 4A opponents (DeKalb twice, Yorkville twice, Ottawa and Minooka). They also have rivalry games with Seneca and Minooka and have road trips to Geneseo, Rochelle and O’Fallon, where they will play Columbia.

“Last year, 10 of our 27 games were decided by six points or fewer,” Blumberg said. “We expect the same type of grueling schedule with nightly battles. And, in one- and two-possession games, little things become magnified.

Making free throws, jump stops, taking charges, communicating, not losing your man in transition, pass fakes, closing out with a high hand every time, being in help side. ... It’s the reason we harp and harp on our guys in practice about the little details and doing it right every time.

“If we can’t trust our guys to do it right every time in a practice drill, how can we expect them to do it in the fourth quarter of a tie game on the road?”

Coal City enters state semifinal for sixth time in school history

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – For the sixth time in school history, the Coal City football team will play in a state semifinal when they take on Chicago Phillips on Saturday in the IHSA Class 4A football semifinal at Gately Stadium.

Phillips is a member of the Chicago Public League Illini – Land of Lincoln Conference, but the Wildcats aren’t your typical Public League team.

Phillips (11-1) has outscored its 12 opponents, 463-52, so far and has posted seven shutouts.

They have only allowed their opponents to score in double digits twice.

“From what I’ve seen on film, they have a lot of size and a lot of speed,” Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said. “We feel like we will be able to match up with them size-wise for sure.

Speed-wise, we can at a few positions.

“Our guys have been using their size and banging teams all year. Our conference is very physical and has prepared us for that type of game. We have been tested pretty well, so we are feeling pretty good going into this one.”

In the opening round of the playoffs, Phillips downed Plano, an Interstate Eight Large rival of Coal City’s, 24-6. Coal City beat Plano, 22-13, earlier in the season.

“It was a similar result when both [times we] played Plano, so that makes us feel like we have a good shot,” Onsen said.

In last week’s quarterfinal game, Phillips topped previously undefeated and topranked Rockford Lutheran, 14-13. Phillips took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 33-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Quayvon Skanes and

Collins and Skanes were both named All-Chicago Public League, as were Phillips defensive players Chris Elmore (60, 230, So., DL), Amani Jones (5-11, 210, Jr., LB) and Jamal Brown (6-1, 190, Sr., DB).

“Their quarterback [Collins] is very athletic and he is a big part of their running game,” Onsen said. “But they

can throw it pretty well, too.

We want to prevent the big play as much as we can and make them try to drive the field against us.”

The Coalers (10-2) perhaps had a more exciting finish in their quarterfinal game, scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 28-7 deficit and beat Manteno, 29-28. The Coalers’ Jack Dibble scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 31 seconds left, and teammate Corey Jurzak ran in the two-point conversion to provide the winning points.

with 264 yards on the ground, and now has 2,528 yards and 32 touchdowns rushing this year.

If the Coalers are to be successful, he will be the focal point of the offense again.

“We want to sustain drives and keep their offense off the field,” Onsen said. “What we really need to do is get off to a good, quick start. A lot of our games, we have had to come back and beat teams. We want to get out quick and play with a lead and see what that’s like.

“In order to do that, we will have to keep from making mistakes like turnovers and pen-

alties. When you get to this point of the season, those can kill you.”

If it doesn’t work out that the Coalers get the early lead, Onsen just hopes his club can keep it close.

“Our kids are excited and confident,” he said. “If we can keep it close into the fourth quarter, then our kids won’t panic in that situation. We’ve been in that situation a lot this year, and we know we can come back if we have to. We just want to play a solid game and put ourselves in a position to win it.”

Fond memories in Chicago return Former Bears coach, quarterback speak positively of time with team It is almost impossible to think about the Bears meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday without focusing on the return of Lovie Smith and Josh McCown to Chicago.

Smith was the coach of the Bears for nine seasons, almost 10 percent of the entire history of the franchise.

In the 48-year history of the Super Bowl, the Bears have been there only twice, once under Smith. His Bears won three NFC North titles and played in two NFC Championship games, both at Soldier Field.

But Smith actually is remembered more for the six seasons in which his clubs didn’t make the playoffs and his failure to build a competitive NFL offense with four different coordinators including Terry Shea, Ron Turner, Mike Martz and Mike Tice.

And, of course, there was the decision to fire Ron Rivera after the 2006 Super Bowl appearance in spite of the fact his defenses had been nothing short of outstanding.

The last straw for Smith in Chicago was, in spite of going 10-6 in 2012, first-year general manager Phil Emery fired him for failing to make the playoffs in five of his last six seasons.

“Oh, I’m proud of everything we were able to do,” Smith said. “I loved my time there. I loved the organization that I worked for and the opportunity that they gave me and, as much as anything, the players that I got a chance to lead and to coach. The lifetime memories, the lifetime relationships that I was able to form from being there, of course that’s what will stay with me forever.”

Smith refuses to be angry

Part of the perception of Lovie’s time in Chicago by Bears fans is colored by what was a deteriorating relationship with the local media and

fan base in his later years.

“The media had a job – you guys had a job to do. That just had very little to do with what I was doing. I knew you guys had a job, but it just didn’t affect an awful lot about what I was doing. I was kind of focused in a different area.”

McCown also speaks fondly of his time in Chicago, but is surprised by the way Marc Trestman’s image has suffered in recent weeks.

“As far as what I understood last year, I felt like he was consistent with his message as well and didn’t waiver from that.” McCown said. “I don’t know if that’s changed or not, I believe again, like I said about Lovie, that’s a hard thing to do is to stick to your guns and to stick to what you believe in right in the midst of turmoil or things that aren’t going your way. I appreciate that from Marc and I felt it

last year and I think it was one of the main things that helped me play at the level I played at.”

Are Smith and McCown focused on revenge Sunday?

“As I come in Sunday, I’m coming in as an opposing coach,” Smith said. “That’s how I’m looking at it. The year I had off and just being in Chicago for nine years, I don’t need anything validated this week. Fans were great to me and my family while we were there, administration was. I have lifetime friends on the Chicago Bears football team.

I think I have all those things right now. I’m an opposing coach on the other side of the field coming in this week.”

Bears’ Briggs puts his former coach in impressive company

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Lance Briggs’ reverence for Lovie Smith is well known, and he put his former coach in impressive company Wednesday at Halas Hall.

“Lovie should be remembered as one of the great coaches in Chicago,” Briggs said after practice.

“George Halas, you have Mike Ditka and Lovie Smith comes next.”

No one on the 53-man roster was affected more by playing for Smith than Briggs, and he told reporters the ways Smith got the most out of Briggs, challenging him and helping develop one of the game’s better linebackers over the past decade.

“Back in ’04, he just challenged me all the time,” he said. “You know, it was always, ‘Lance, you’re not going to make that play, he’ll never make that play.’ And he’s always talking to like Brian [Urlacher] or some of the other guys and he’d be like, ‘Lance can’t make that play, Derrick Brooks can make that play, the real 55 can make that play.’

“As I started making more and more of the plays and the years kind of went on, his tune really changed and it was always, ‘I know where Lance will be, I know where Lance is going to make that play, so that’s not a worry for me.’ And that was earned. That amount of respect from him to me was earned and that goes for all the guys that were in that room.”

If you have an interest in the history of bridge and its forerunners, buy “Bumblepuppy Days” by Julian Laderman (Master Point Press). You will find it fascinating as you are led from whist to bridge whist to auction bridge to contract bridge.

The word bumblepuppy was used to mean whist being played poorly or without regard for rules, or a poor whist player. The term was popular in particular after the publication of “Whist; or Bumblepuppy?” in 1880.

Here is one of the few deals in the book. In the days of whist, there was no bidding. South named hearts as trumps, and West made the unfortunate opening lead of the club ace.

Could South have now won all 13 tricks?

Well, he did in Robert Foster’s book, “Foster’s Encyclopedia of Games,” which was published in 1897.

Declarer ruffed the opening lead in the dummy and ran the diamond queen. When that won, South played a diamond to his jack, ruffed a club in the dummy, led a heart to his 10, played a spade to dummy’s ace, led a heart to his queen, cashed the heart ace, and took the club king.

When that established declarer’s club nine and eight, he claimed. South took one spade, four hearts, three diamonds, three clubs and two club ruffs in the dummy.

No doubt you noticed the defense’s two errors. West’s opening lead was not best.

Any other card – even a low club – would have left South unable to win all 13 tricks. And East should have covered dummy’s diamond queen with his king.

Maybe in a reprint the author switched the diamond 10 and seven.
