Remember to appreciate holidays

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Daylight savings time and the passing of Halloween mean the holiday season is here.

I know some of us can become more of a Grinch as we get older, but it’s still my favorite time of year.

I’m fighting to keep it that way.

Despite my youngest cousins not thanking us for their gifts last Christmas, my spirit remains strong.

I thought you were supposed to say “thank you” even when you don’t like your presents, but I digress.

We often get caught up in the logistics of holidays – worrying about who is hosting and at what time, who will be there and who will not, whether you’ll shop early or last minute, and so much more.

This probably doesn’t mean as much as Grandma and Grandpa saying it, but be thankful for what you have and who you have with you,

I know we all have fractured relationships with someone we may or may not see this holiday season.

If you truly believe you’ve done all you can do to make it right, then focus on the ones you are most fond of and allow those relationships to grow even more.

I’m at the stage where I’m not yet able to host everyone for Thanksgiving or Christmas, so maybe I don’t have to worry about those logistics, but I’ve made plenty of observations.

I feel there’s always something you can find to appreciate and be thankful for that can override those scheduling snafus and the wisecrack soand-so made about such and such that happened 15 years

But as I think of what I’m thankful for here in the public forum, it’s that I’ve always felt welcomed in Grundy County since I began working here in March.

Thank you to everyone I’ve had an encounter with so far.

Looking ahead to this holiday season, I’m interested in seeing how it’s done in this area.

I’m from a part of Will County where nothing within walking distance seems to be older than 50 years.

My hometown of Bolingbrook, a municipality with five or six times the population of Morris’, doesn’t have what I’d consider a downtown area.

It’s no wonder that since beginning work here, I’ve appreciated the rich history that dates back to the 1800s, particularly in downtown Morris and surrounding neighborhoods.

There’s something about the character of older homes and buildings that I feel takes

this time of year to the next level.

I’m excited to see how it all looks over these next few months.

Any director looking to film a blast-from-the-past type of movie or film would be wise to consider Morris.

And although we all would probably like more sunlight in the evening, that darkness that hits some of us by surprise when we drive home from work this week will only make those holiday lights shine brighter.

In conclusion, this may be the most disputed thing I write in this piece, but snow gets a bad rap.

Vex Robotics Competition comes to Seneca High School, inspires young techs

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com SENECA – Twenty-four teams came Saturday to the Seneca High School gym to vie for the title of champion.

It was a battle of brains and engineering as students brought their Vex Robotics robots to the ring to see who could score the most points.

“Everyone is relaxed and having fun,” said Mike Martus, regional support manager with Robotics Education and Competition Foundation.

“They get to show off all the great connections they’ve made using STEM (or science, technology, engineering and mathematics).”

Juniors Tony Bernhard and Truman Daggett, along with sophomore Tyson Elias, made up the Seneca High School team for the first Vex Robotics Competition held at their school.

They had to face teams that have been competing far longer from much farther away, including three schools from Carbondale that drove five hours to compete.

“We started the robotics program three years ago for freshmen,” said Bryan Erickson, Industrial Technology teacher at Seneca High School. “Now we hope to have sophomores, juniors and seniors join in for a robotics club to compete in similar competitions.”

The Vex circuit is just one of the robotics circuits available to high school students – one that is quickly growing in Illinois as well as the nation, according to Martus.

“It’s growing by 30-plus percent a year. It’s the fastestand largest-growing robotics competitions, with 14,000 teams in the United States alone,” Martus said. “Illinois went from seven events last year to 14 this year. They’ve grown in one year from 120

All teams are given the same standard Vex kit to create a robot from.

After that, the only limit is the imaginations of each team.

In the Nothing But Net challenge teams competed in Saturday, each was given allies, and two teams took on two other teams in a red versus blue match.

The match was played on a 12-foot by 12-foot field.

Matches consisted of a 15-second autonomous period, followed by 1 minute and 45 seconds of driver-controlled play.

Points were awarded for where the ball landed in the net, and the field had orange balls in play on the court, which count for double the

finals, which allowed members to choose their two allies from teams that placed ninth through 24th place.

Martus said the rookie event, a name given the first event at a competing school, came out far better than he had expected and he was happy to see so many students competing.

Getting All Dressed Up MORRIS – Halloween allows children and adults alike to become who they want, even if it’s just for one day.

Some choose their favorite characters, like the latest Transformer, Batman or Wonder Woman.

Holtan retires after 26 years of serving Grundy residents, agencies

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Donna Holtan said she caught her co-workers by surprise when she decided in August to retire from her position as director of the 911 Center.

Although several have become like family in the 26 years she’s served the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department and the Grundy County Emergency Telephone System Board, they understood her decision.

People such as Sherry Rolando, who has worked with Holtan 24 years – from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department on to the 911 center – are happy for her.

“She deserves to leave and have a wonderful life,” Rolando said Friday during a retirement open house for Holtan.

“She can spend time with her family on holidays now.”

The duo worked together through pregnancies, sickness, overtime and without family on holidays and at night. When Rolando started, she said she was the “baby” of the staff.

“Donna is my mentor,” Rolando said. “She taught me everything I know. As a co-worker and now boss, she respects

“We’d say, ‘No! Do not touch it. I know where everything is,’ ” Rolando recalled.

Police officers, firefighters, 911 center employees and more visited the 911 center Friday afternoon to thank Holtan, wish her well, and reminisce over lunch and refreshments.

Wilmington to offer Native American history story

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Wilmington School District 209-U will offer a new high school course focusing on Native American history, especially in the city.

“It’s one of the most exciting projects in curriculum I ever worked with,” said District 209-U Superintendent Jay Plese.

District officials developed the course after speaking with Scott Sypolt, an independent

attorney who’s worked with the Chicago Blackhawks. Sypolt also is the owner of Get Fit 24/7, which has several locations in Grundy County.

Plese said Sypolt has worked with Native American tribes in the Midwest.

In their discussions with Sypolt, district officials came up with the idea of offering students a course that will give a better history of Native Americans than what is usually taught. The course also would focus on Native American

The equalization factor is detertentative multiplier SPRINGFIELD – Grundy County has been issued a tentative property assessment equalization factor of 1.0000, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The property assessment equalization factor, called the “multiplier,” is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties, as required by law, according to a news release from the IDR. This equalization is important because some of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties.

If there were no equalization among counties, substantial inequities among taxpayers with comparable properties would result.

State law requires property in Illinois to be assessed at one-third of its market value. Farm property is assessed differently, with farm homesites and dwellings subject to regular assessing and equaliza-

mined annually for each county by comparing the sales price of individual properties sold over the past three years to the assessed value placed on those properties by the county supervisor of assessments/county assessor. If the three-year average level of assessment is one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be one.

If the average level of assessment is greater than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be less than one. If the average level of assessment is less than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be greater than one.

Assessments in Grundy County are at 33.13 percent of market value, based on sales of properties in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

The equalization factor currently being assigned is for 2015 taxes, payable in 2016.

Don served as a medical technician in the Armed Forces of the United States of America from March of 1946 to September of 1947. Don was a hard working husband and father who was known for his great cooking. He enjoyed his “retirement years” managing, cooking and bartending at the Dwight Country Club where he also helped maintain the greens, and also tended the grill on weekends at Turtle’s Tap. Donald passed on his love of sports to his children and spent many years cheering on the Cubs, Bulls, Blackhawks and Bears.

Donald will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

Former U.S. Rep. Gus Savage of Chicago dies at age 90 The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Gus Savage, a civil rights activist and journalist who represented a South Side Chicago district for 12 years in the U.S. House, died Saturday, a day after celebrating his 90th birthGus Savage day.

His son Thomas Savage told The Associated Press the former Democratic congressman celebrated his birthday Friday with fami-

ly and friends. He went to sleep and was found unresponsive in his bed Saturday morning.

Born in Detroit, Savage moved to Chicago with his family when he was age five. Savage served in a segregated unit of the U.S. Army during World War II. He founded Citizen Newspapers, which became the largest black-owned chain of weekly community newspapers in the Midwest.

He sold the newspaper chain in 1980 and was elected that year to represent Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District until January 1993.

A major achievement during his time in Congress was passage of a measure requiring the U.S. Defense Department to set aside lucrative military procurement contracts for minority-owned businesses, according to the U.S. House website.

“He never wavered in the fight for fairness and justice, no matter the foe or the arena,” his son said.

Savage’s record was marred by an ethics investigation in 1989, during which he was accused of sexual misconduct involving a Peace Corps vol-

unteer while he was on an official visit to Zaire, the House website said. The subsequent public report condemned his

behavior but did not recommend punishment, citing Savage’s effort to apologize to the volunteer.

Close regional match goes Morris’ way

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com PARK FOREST – Thursday night’s Class 3A Rich East Regional championship girls volleyball match between Morris and Chicago Christian started out like most matches.

Yes, there was a special exception with the regional championship on the line, but nobody could have foretold what would pass.

In fact, during the first game and most of the second, the most noteworthy thing about the match was that Morris never trailed until Chicago Christian took a 12-11 lead midway through Game 2.

The Redskins immediately got the lead back when University of Illinois recruit Kaylin Korte dove from the back row to save a Chicago Christian serve from being an ace – and the ball went back over the net and fell in bounds to give Morris a point. She then got a kill and Morris had the lead back, 13-12, and it seemed that the volleyball gods had smiled on the Redskins on this night.

Morris, which plays Providence Catholic at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Lincoln-Way West Sectional, continued to hold the lead after that, taking a 2320 advantage late in the game.

Then it got real interesting.

Chicago Christian rallied with four straight points and was one point away from taking the game before Korte tied it at 24 with a kill. The game was tied again at 25, 26, 28, 28 and 29 as neither team could get that elusive two-point lead for the win.

Chicago Christian finally nailed it down with kills from Danielle Tyson and Aaryana Moore to win, 31-29, and seemed poised to take the momentum from winning that game into the deciding Game 3.

Morris, however, had other ideas.

Chicago Christian came out strong early in Game 3, getting kills from Alyssa Van Kuiken and Tyson, then an ace by Abigail Joritz to go ahead, 4-2.

The Redskins then got a kill from Janelle Brehm, scored a point when Chicago Christian hit the ball four times, then

Key in the string were two kills by Brehm, a kill by Calleen Soper and two straight aces by Corrinne Day. “All during that second game, I was thinking, ‘It’s our time to win a close match,’ ” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “We have lost so many of those this year. We’re used to being in them, so I was thinking that it was our time to win one.

“The way the girls kept their composure during it all was amazing. If they made a mistake, they just let it go. Earlier in the season, we weren’t doing that. One error would turn from one point into three and that was enough to lose a match.”

On Thursday, however, the Redskins didn’t allow that to happen, and their resolve helped them maintain the lead late in the match and come

away with their first regional title since 2011.

“This is awesome,” Korte said after she won the first regional title of her record-setting career. “The whole team worked so hard to get here.

That second game was so tiring, and we knew Chicago Christian was going to fight hard in the third, too. We really wanted this one.”

Korte and Brehm have been the players in the spotlight for most of the season for the Redskins, but during the regional run, especially wins over Lincoln-Way West and Chicago Christian, the supporting cast has been outstanding as well. Soper, Veronica Johnson and Addison Polite have stepped up their games, and Morris has gotten solid performances from everyone that has seen the floor.

“It’s been a tough year,” Lafond admitted. “I came in as a new coach on short notice, and we have had a lot to overcome. But the girls really put the work in, and it’s showing.

ing with winning at Yorkville on their senior night, we have made that change we have been looking for.

“The light came on for us. It

was kind of on for a lot of the season, but it was flickering a little bit. Now, it’s on and it’s stayed on. We hope we can keep it going.”

Bears ‘D’ squanders late fourth quarter lead against Vikings

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – The Bears’ already-banged-up offense lost running back Matt Forte and receiver Eddie Royal to knee injuries in Sunday’s 23-20 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings.

The absences only magnify what a healthy Alshon Jeffery means to the Bears.

Jeffery corralled 10 catches for 116 yards and a superb leaping touchdown on 15 targets (all game-highs) to help the Bears draw even before halftime.

He secured three grabs, including a fourth-and-1 conversion in Minnesota territory, to give the Bears a lead late in the fourth quarter.

Jeffery accounted for 10 of the Bears’ 22 catches and more than half of the Bears’ receiving yardage.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said this week Jeffery is open any time he’s in single coverage, and that was the case as the first half came to a close.

“I think it was a better throw than my route, actually,” Jeffery said. “He just threw it up and gave me a chance. It was like a double move, but the corner didn’t bite. It was a great throw, and I made a great catch.”

After a dominant effort in Detroit – Jeffery’s first action after being sidelined for four games with a hamstring injury – he admitted he was a bit surprised to see so much single coverage.

“A little bit. … At the same time, it’s pitch and catch,” Jeffery said.

Fourth-quarter meltdown

Sherrick McManis lost his nickel role to Bryce Callahan this week, but he was forced into action with the game on the line. The Bears had driven 74 yards to take a 20-13 lead late in the fourth quarter when McManis replaced an injured Callahan.

In the span of four plays, McManis committed a holding penalty, before Vikings rookie Stefon Diggs caught a quick pass in front of McManis and turned downfield for a 40-yard game-tying score – the Bears’ second fourth-quarter lead squandered in as many games.

“It doesn’t matter whether I’m coming off the bench or I’m starting,” McManis said.

Rare as those are, it’s what Bears running backs coach Stan Drayton feared it might take to introduce a fourthround rookie to the crunchtime situations that make the NFL. Forte has missed only four of 117 games in eight seasons, and he went down on an 8-yard swing pass in the middle of the third quarter of the Minnesota Vikings’ 23-20 win over the Bears on Sunday, when Harrison Smith hit him and twisted his knee.

Cutler rolled right and zipped a pass to an open and crossing Langford, who was looking to move up the field when the ball bounced off his hands. Then it was a Bears punt, Vikings field goal, Vikings win. Cutler went over to Langford, as did other players. “ ‘One play doesn’t win or lose the football game. I don’t care what game it is,’ ” Cutler recalled telling him.

It still hurt.

But Langford accepted this, staying at his locker for as long as just about any player after the game.

OPINION Supreme Court case could change much about union dues SPRINGFIELD – So who is Rebecca Friedrichs? For most, her name doesn’t ring a bell.

After all, she is an elementary school teacher in California.

Her impact during the past two decades has come one child at a time as she imparted knowledge to youngsters.

And she has found influencing the path taken by those students to be rewarding. But her influence only went so far.

The leadership of California Teachers Union, which she was a member of, didn’t like her conservative beliefs.

And she didn’t think much of the CTU’s positions on issues, either.

She tried to influence the union by being elected an officer but found those above her were far more interested in promoting job security for teachers – even ineffective ones – than in furthering the welfare of students.

Despite this, she is compelled by California law to give the union money if she wants to teach in public schools. So she filed a lawsuit asking that she no longer be forced to pay dues or “fair share” payments to the union.

That is how it is in half of the states, but California and Illinois don’t happen to be among them.

The United States Supreme Court has agreed to hear Friedrichs’ case. If she prevails, which many observers believe she will, all state, local and federal employees might no longer be compelled to pay money to unions. Such payments would be voluntary.

In other words, this has the potential to be a landmark decision regarding labor law in the United States.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Harris v.

Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy pointed out when the Harris case was argued that just about everything a public-employee union does on its behalf is political.

I was sitting in the courtroom when Justice Kennedy made that observation. Since Kennedy often is the swing vote between the four conservatives on the court and the four liberals, I knew it was all but certain some government worker would file a lawsuit challenging the status quo. It ended up being Friedrichs.

“The union’s core values are in direct opposition to my own core values and the core values of many of its forced members,” she told me.

“The unions core values affect every political decision they make and every collective bargaining stance they take,” she said. “So no matter where our fees are directed, they go to promote the union’s core values and the union’s agenda, which means millions of workers like myself are paying fees to fight our own core beliefs in the workplace and society.

That’s a direct attack on our First Amendment rights.”

At the bridge table, the more alternative lines of play you have, often the more difficult your decision. However, some always go with the first option that they see, which happened when this deal was originally played.

South was in four spades. West led the diamond ace and continued with the diamond king. After ruffing, what should declarer have done?

South’s heart loser was going to disappear on dummy’s fourth club, but trumps had to be drawn first.

The original declarer immediately led the spade king from his hand, but West defended perfectly by ducking.

He saw that if he won and led another diamond, declarer would ruff in the dummy.

Instead, when South continued with a low trump at trick four, West stepped in with his jack and played a diamond. Declarer ruffed, but now both West and South had two spades left.

Declarer led another trump, hoping West was out of diamonds, but no luck. South had to go down one, losing one diamond and three spades.

Declarer should have been happy to concede two trump tricks. At trick three, he should have led a low spade toward dummy’s nine. If West won that trick and led a diamond, South would have ruffed in the dummy, crossed to his hand with a club, and played the spade king. He would have ruffed the next diamond, drawn trumps, and claimed. Or, if West ducked at trick four, declarer could have played a trump to his king, ruffed the next diamond, cashed the spade queen, and turned to clubs.

Know the risks, benefits before becoming a vegetarian Dear Dr. K: I’m thinking of becoming a vegetarian. But I need to be certain -- is a vegetarian diet really better for your health?

Dear Reader: The answer is: it depends. Just avoiding meats and eating only vegetables can be accomplished in both healthy and unhealthy ways. After all, a vegetarian who subsists on meat-free pizza and grilled cheese sandwiches isn’t doing himself any favors. And, believe it or not, I’ve had more than one “vegetarian” patient whose diet was like that.

However, for a while now, it’s been clear that healthy, plant-based diets may improve long-term health.

Such healthy vegetarian diets include proteins from vegetables (peas, spinach, broccoli,

Several recent studies have provided evidence of health benefits of plant-based diets. In one study, researchers found that vegetarians have the lowest average body mass index (BMI). Meat eaters have the highest BMIs. Excess weight is associated with a higher risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other illnesses.

Another study found that eating a vegetarian diet reduced the overall risk of all cancers compared with

eating a non-vegetarian diet.

And a third study showed that vegetarian diets were associated with a lower risk of death from all causes.

These studies were what are called observational studies. Large numbers of people were followed for a long time.

Those people who chose to emphasize plant-based foods in their diets had better health. But the studies could not prove that the plant-based diets were the cause of the better health.

That kind of proof requires randomized trials, in which some people are chosen at random to eat plant-based diets and others are not.

Because they are expensive to conduct, such randomized trials tend to involve smaller numbers of people followed

for shorter times.

There have been quite a number of such randomized trials. They have generally shown that risk factors for heart disease, stroke and diabetes (like blood pressure, blood cholesterol and sugar) are better with plant-based diets. A few studies have been large enough and long enough to actually show lower rates of these diseases and of premature death. So while I don’t consider it proven beyond a doubt, I do think it is likely that healthy plantbased diets (particularly the Mediterranean diet) really are better for our health.

If you want to transition to a more plant-based diet, start slowly. Deliberately make a vegetarian meal one day a week. (Meatless Mondays are

popular these days.) Then move to a few meatless meals per week. You’ll also have to change the way you think about your plate. Dinner won’t center around a large chunk of meat.

Vegetarian meals mix proteins, fats and vegetables together. Stews, soups and one-pot meals with beans, whole grains and vegetables are popular options. Good sources of plant-based proteins and fats include avocados, peanut butter and nuts.
