Council OKs Lisbon Road bridge work

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris has joined a public works network that could help recovery in trying times.

Founded in 2009, the Illinois Public Works Mutual Aid Network is envisioned as an all-hazards, all-disciplines approach to sharing resources among public works entities in Illinois, according to its website. Members help one another with personnel and resources for both natural and manmade disasters.

The council approved joining the network with a 6-0 vote.

“It cost $100, which we felt was worth it,” Alderman Randy Larson said. “We don’t commit to anything, but it allows us and other municipalities to ask for resources and support [from others in the network].”

There are 230 member agen-

cies – plus the addition of Morris – according to the website.

Such a network can help recovery in cases such as the Diamond-Coal City tornado of November 2013 or the Coal City-Braidwood tornado of June 2015. Mayor Richard Kopczick said the legwork and homework on the matter was done by Fire Marshal Bob Coleman. The city already is part of police and fire mutual aid networks.

The council also unanimously approved a $175,000 expense in order to add onto the state’s Lisbon Road bridge project, which is expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks by D Construction, Kopczick said.

Curb, gutter, sidewalk and pavement are being extended to the closest intersections to the north and south of the bridge on city right of way. The previous Lisbon Road bridge and

parking from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Friday on the south side of Brentwood Drive between Route 47 and Newton Drive. Larson said the property owner plans to continue reconfiguring the parking arrangement and add sidewalks. This will help improve access to the adjacent building and for the Morris Hospital bus, Larson said, which makes frequent trips to the building, as it houses several medical offices.

Though this specific portion did not receive a second bid, the Street and Alley Committee noted that due to the cost of getting another company’s equipment on site, D Construction can easily offer the best price because the equipment is already in place from the state’s bridge project. The rates the company charged were the same as those charged to the state, Larson said.

“We’re getting the best deal we possibly can, and it should be done by the end of the month,” Larson said. “We won’t have to worry about it in the future.”

Because of it being a nonbid project, there was a heightened voting requirement, city attorney Scott Belt said, which was five of the six aldermen. The council also approved amending the city budget to add the expense.

Coal City High School stages armed intruder drill with help of local police

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Principal Mitch Hamann’s voice was heard over the speakers in each room Tuesday morning at Coal City High School asking teachers and students to “take cover.”

Members of the Coal City Police Department, along with Lt. Nick Doerfler from the Coal City Fire District, were in the school’s office preparing to run through an armed intruder drill – just one of the many types of drills required by law for the school district.

“It’s mandated that the schools do a drill once a year.

We go into each of the local schools for the drills,” Coal City Police Sgt. Chris Harseim said.

Police Sgt. Tom Logan said Tuesday’s drill was a soft drill, done to make sure teachers and students are trained in how to respond if an armed intruder made his or her way into the school.

“The soft drill is more for them,” he said.

Police officers participate in more realistic drills and are trained throughout the year on how to respond.

The officers spoke with administrative staff in the front office on what would happen once an intruder entered the school.

“Don’t put yourself in danger,” Harseim said to the administrative assistants who work in the main office at the front of the building. “If you have the opportunity to flee, then flee and take whoever you can with you.”

He also told them that often they are the eyes and ears inside the school and should take note of how many people there are, if they are carrying weapons, and a description to relay to responding police officers.

Morris Library drinks its fill on rum history

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A presentation by food historian Cynthia Clampitt on Tuesday night at the Morris Area Public Library focused on the role the liquor rum played in history in her presentation, titled “How Rum Changed the World.”

“Rum has had a wider impact on history than any other alcohol,” Clampitt said to a group gathered in the library auditorium.

Molasses was known as the waste product of sugar, and without sugar cane the world might not have discovered that fermenting molasses could make rum.

Rum rose to prominence as a big part of the spice trade in the 1100s, Clampitt said, and possessing it meant you might be in a good financial position.

At that time, Clampitt said, people consumed more sugar per person than they do now, even when realizing it could rot their teeth. Dark teeth were signs of wealth.

Audience member Nancy Limbach thought that fact stood out.

“It’s interesting how values change over time, but that was important to them,” Limbach said.

Surprised by the historical significance of rum and how it seemed to weave through history, Limbach said she enjoyed the presentation. She said it stayed on topic.

“She was a really good speaker,” Limbach said.

Not only was rum once a sign of wealth, it was believed, like most alcohol, to have health benefits, Clampitt said.

“Europeans used it heavily, believing it could treat disease, sickness, and more,” she said.

Saratoga school board OKs selling bonds New block system for junior high students reported to be a success

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Saratoga Community Consolidated School District 60C held a special Board of Education meeting Monday in conjunction with its regular monthly meeting to discuss and take action on the intent to sell $1 million in working cash fund bonds.

Saratoga Schools Superintendent Kathy Perry said Feb. 1 is the call date for the 2007 building bond issue, which was used for a building addition.

What the district proposed to do is swap one type of bond

(building bonds) for another (working cash bonds).

“We want to restructure building bonds to include a working cash fund, which allows the district to establish a debt service extension base should Senate Bill 318 pass,” Perry said. “The overall tax rate will not increase because one type of bond is swapped out for another.”

Perry said the district does not have any working cash bonds right now and with SB 318 not yet voted on, she and the district felt it necessary to be preventive. If approved, SB 318 would affect school funding, pension costs possibly

shifting more toward school districts and increasing health costs.

The motion to sell $1 million in working cash fund bonds unanimously passed with all board members in attendance.

The board also unanimously voted to adopt a tentative tax levy and establish a public hearing for 6:15 p.m. Dec. 21 because of the truth in taxation requirement.

Saratoga Elementary Principal Joe Zweeres gave a report on a new schedule for the junior high students. He said two classes take place during the lunch block. Last year during lunch, the junior high students would eat and have outside time, which students did not seem to want anymore.

“Instead of recess, we now

offer ‘brain breaks’ during our block classes to get the kids up and moving around with different activities,” Zweeres said.

With the new block system, Zweeres said the students can eat lunch and take a class, such as technology, STEM, interventions, band or choir, which is based on either the needs of the student or choice.

At the meeting, technology teacher Amy Shannon and STEM teacher Lisa Berrospe had students present what they learned in those “brain break” classes, which are not graded.

“I had kids ask me technology questions all of the time, so I wanted this class to address all of the questions I have received in the past. This class provided self-directed learn-

ing with peer and teacher support,” Shannon said.

On computers, students created T-shirts, 3-D animation, photo editing, videos, screen casting and websites. Shannon said most students went above and beyond what was expected and enjoyed the challenges.

Berrospe had several of her STEM students demonstrate what they built during the past weeks of class. Students showed bridges out of straws that were used for measuring weight with marbles, egg drop devices, paper roller coasters and blueprint design.

“I said, ‘If this class isn’t graded, how is this class going to be?’ The students loved it and learned to work together,” Berrospe said. “The kids didn’t want to go and want another STEM class.”

CHANNAHON – Presented with a choice of six scenarios for the amount of the preliminary tax levy, the Channahon Village Board agreed Monday with Finance Director Heather Wagonblott’s recommendation to prepare documents to seek a 2015 total levy of $2.261 million.

That amount is more than $250,000 higher than last year’s levy. However, Wagonblott said, last year’s levy was about $102,000 less than that of the previous year.

The preliminary levy figure is based on an estimated equalized assessed valuation of $287.7 million and could result in a tax rate of 0.786 per $100 of owned property. That rate, according to Wagonblott, is higher than last year’s rate. The 2014 tax rate for the village was 0.7208, which the village had kept constant from 2013. If the amount of the levy is approved by the board next month, it could mean an annual increase on the village’s portion of residential property tax bills of $43.47 for a home valued at $200,000 and of $54.33 for a home valued at $250,000.

Wagonblott stressed that these were preliminary numbers and the levy could be lower. There are many uncertainties in the calculations of this year’s levy, she said, such as the financial situation of the state. Illinois owes Channahon $90,000 in motor-fuel tax allotments, she said, and also there is talk of a property-tax freeze in the state.

Other considerations in this year’s levy, Wagonblott said, are decreases in state and local sales-tax revenue, telecommunications taxes and motor-fuel

taxes. Village Administrator Tom Durkin said Channahon also is negotiating for village union contracts that will be retroactive, and that expense is not yet known.

Although no vote was taken at this week’s meeting, Trustees Debbie Militello and Mark Scaggs said they were not in favor of increasing the tax rate.

The board Monday also heard of the progress of senior apartments planned for the Channahon Town Center. Jim Roberts, developer for Catholic Charities, which is in negotiations to buy a block of land from the Catholic Diocese of Joliet for the residences, said the four, three-story buildings would each contain 12 apartments that will provide affordable housing for seniors.

Monthly rents on the oneand two-bedroom units could range from $350 to $850, and more than 25 percent of the residents likely will receive financial assistance.

“They are designed for an independent lifestyle,” Roberts said of the units.

Each apartment will have an attached garage, and some will be set aside for those with sensory impairments and disabilities. Roberts said the plan is to begin building by April 2016, but after the meeting, village staff said there still were several steps left in the process before village approval, including evaluating whether the plans meet the criteria of Channahon’s Town Center design standards. It also was announced that the annual Christmas tree lighting, sponsored by the village and Three Rivers Public Library District, will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 6 at Village Hall, 24555 S. Navajo Drive.

Training offered for hoarding disorder SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The Grundy County Health Department recently coordinated a training program in the area of hoarding disorder.

It is estimated that 2 percent to 5 percent of the population has this illness, which is a major concern for local communities in terms of public health, entrapment, fire and safety hazards, police obstruction, structural damage to residences and neighborhoods, and conflict between individuals and their families.

The area-wide training, held Oct. 27 to 29 at the Minooka Fire Station, was offered to licensed mental health professionals.

Presenters included Dr. Pam Kaczmerak, PsyD, from Pronk Professional Services (Kenosha, Wisconsin) and Dr. John Calamari, PhD, from Rosalind Franklin University (Chicago).

They stopped at one door and knocked to see whether the teacher or students would open the door to let them in, and as taught, those inside ignored the knocks.

In another area of the building, school resource officer Detective Jason Clark and Doerfler canvassed bathrooms, the janitors’ room and the auditorium, looking to see whether they could find someone who was vulnerable to attack. They found no one.

As the police officers and staff met back in the front office, they went over their findings. All agreed the drill couldn’t have gone better.

Longtime AP track writer Bert Rosenthal dies

By BOB BAUM The Associated Press PHOENIX – Bert Rosenthal, who became one of the top track and field writers in the United States in more than four decades with The Associated Press, has died.

He was 79.

Rosenthal died Sunday night in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he had lived since his retirement from Bert Rosenthal the AP in 2001.

He had a long history of heart problems and had been in failing health for some time, his wife Emily said.

“Bert was considered an authority on track and field and certainly was one of the pre-

mier beat writers during the ’80s and ’90s,” said Terry Taylor, AP sports editor from 1992 to 2013. “He had a little black book with phone numbers for every big name in the sport.

His access was remarkable.”

Rosenthal joined the AP as a statistician in 1957, shortly after he graduated from City College of New York.

He was the AP’s track and field writer from 1972 until his retirement and covered the NBA from 1973-76.

Rosenthal covered seven Olympics, from Montreal to Sydney, as well as every world track championships during that span.

Rosenthal won story of the year awards from The Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) in 1983 and 1984.

He received the Jesse

Abramson Award from the Track and Field Writers of America (TAFWA) as writer of the year in 1988 and the George Sheehan Award from the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in 2000 for his work over the years on the Boston Marathon.

Rosenthal was president of TAFWA for two years and served as secretary-treasurer of the Professional Basketball Writers of America.

“Bert was ‘the’ track and field writer of his era,” longtime friend and fellow track writer Gene Cherry said. “He was extremely knowledgeable and was always willing to help others who were not as knowledgeable of the sport as he was.”

Known for his work ethic, Rosenthal once dictated

a story from his bed after he was hospitalized with heart problems in Sydney during the 2000 Olympics. After his retirement, he covered Phoenix Suns games for the AP as a freelance writer.

“Bert was the best. Also the hardest worker in the AP sports department,” said Ken Rappoport, a colleague of Rosenthal for more than 25 years. “They didn’t call him ‘Full Day’ for nothing,” Rosenthal was born in The Bronx, New York, on June 10, 1936. Besides his wife, he is survived by son Scott of suburban Denver, Colorado, daughter Gail Fatizzi of Scarsdale, New York, twin daughters Sandy Rosenthal of Manchester, Missouri, and Rebecca Rosenthal of Brooklyn, New York, and one granddaughter.

Guo Jie, oldest surviving Olympian, dies at the age of 103 The ASSOCIATED PRESS BEIJING – Guo Jie, a former Chinese discus thrower who was the world’s oldest surviving Olympian, has died.

He was 103.

The Xi’an Institute of Physical Education, where he had served as a coach and instructor, said Guo died Sunday.

Guo represented China in the discus at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin after setting a national record the year before. At the Berlin Games, he produced a personal best throw of 41.13 meters (135 feet, 6 inches) but failed to make the final.

Born in the eastern port city of Dalian in 1912, Guo studied agricultural science and tech-

nology at Tokyo University. In the 1950s he served as a coach and instructor at the physical education institute in the northern city of Xi’an.

Chinese Business View, a Xi’an newspaper, said that Guo had studied the health of the elderly after he retired.

In his 80s, he organized a survey of old people in Xi’an who

did morning exercises, which was conducted by teachers of sports medicine and physiology. He also wrote a book about the role of aerobic exercise in preventing cardiovascular disease.

Guo carried the Olympic torch during the relay through Xi’an ahead of the 2008 Beijing Games.

‘Secret Agent Man’ writer P.F. Sloan dies at 70 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – P.F. Sloan, the songwriter behind such classic 1960s tunes as Johnny Rivers’ “Secret Agent Man” and Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction,” has died.

He was 70.

Howard Wuelfing, a spokesman for Sloan, says the singer-songwriter died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles after battling pancreatic cancer for several weeks.

Sloan signed his first record deal when he was 13 and went on to write songs for such artists as the Turtles, Grass Roots and Fifth Dimension.

He also released several of his own albums and published the memoir “What’s Exactly The Matter With Me?” last year.

Other songs written by Sloan included Herman’s Hermits’ “A Must to Avoid,” Terry Black’s “Unless You Care” and Jan and Dean’s “I Found a Girl.”

I usually make meatballs with ground chuck.

I have found that regular ground beef, although it has a great flavor, has too much fat, and ground round is too lean and lacking somewhat in flavor.

Recently, when I was reading “Southern Made Fresh” by Tasia Malakasis, I found an interesting recipe for meatballs.

Her version is made with ground chicken.

This informative cookbook features “vibrant dishes rooted in homegrown flavor.”

tional foods of the South and “reinvents Southern comfort foods.”

It certainly breaks the stereotype of heavy Southern cuisine.

When using this cookbook, you will probably not think “Southern,” especially if you grew up in the Deep South, but you certainly will find exciting flavors that focus on the many different cuisines that can be found in the South.

One of my favorite recipes for meatballs to be served on the cocktail buffet is my Hawaiian Sundae Meatballs.

Flavored with just a hint of ginger and served with a tasty Hawaiian sauce made with pineapple ice cream topping, these meatballs are a memorable treat for the palate.

Makes about 50 small meatballs 1 pound ground chuck ½ cup dry bread crumbs ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground ginger 2 teaspoons plus 1 tablespoon honey, divided 2 teaspoons lite soy sauce 1 egg 1 jar (18 ounces) honey mustard barbecue sauce (or barbecue sauce of choice) 1 jar (12 ounces) pineapple ice cream topping

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, combine beef, bread crumbs, salt, ginger, 2 teaspoons honey, soy sauce and egg.

Mix well and form into small balls about 1 inch in diameter.

Place in baking pan that is about 1 inch deep. In medium bowl, combine barbecue sauce, pineapple topping and remaining 1 tablespoon honey.

Mix well and set aside.

Bake meatballs for 10 minutes and then pour the sauce over them.

Stir gently to coat all of the meatballs. Bake an additional 10 minutes, stirring once after 5 minutes.

Serve hot in a chafing dish.

Their teams get to play a lot of games in a short period of time and they get to look at different combinations of players on the floor.

Morris girls coach Kate Carey was in the learning opportunity group after her team fell to 0-2 on the year with a 50-48 loss to Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland in the Prairie Central Tournament on Tuesday night.

“This is one of those tournaments where every team is nonconference,” she said.

“It’s early in the season and it gives us an opportunity to work some of the bugs out and see which players work well together.”

The Redskins, who play El Paso-Gridley on Thursday night at 7:30, grabbed a quick 7-2 lead in the first quarter only to see Flanagan close to within 13-11 at the end of the period.

In the third quarter, it was all Morris early, as the Redskins stormed out of the gate, outscoring Flanagan, 17-4, to take a 36-22 lead after Kayla Cryder scored underneath. had a 3-pointer and converted a steal into a layup during the Redskins’ run. Also notching points for Morris were Meghan Smith, who led the Redskins with 11 rebounds, Rylee Harr and Meghan Jurak.

“We had a nice run in the third quarter,” Carey said.

“We were able to get some

turnovers and convert them into points, which is something we didn’t do very well Monday night (a loss to Mahomet-Seymour). Now, we need to learn how to hold onto the lead once we have it.”

That’s because after Morris led by 14, Flanagan outscored the Redskins, 28-12, for the rest

of the game.

The Falcons scored the final seven points of the third quarter to pull to within 36-29 at the end of the third quarter, and kept chipping away during the fourth, finally taking a 44-43 lead with 2:15 to play on a basket by Ashley VanWeelden.

A basket by Shannon with 57 seconds remaining tied the score at 46, but Flanagan’s Korbin Collins hit a 3-pointer with 19.4 seconds left to make the score 49-46 and she then made a free throw with 9.7 seconds left to give her team a 5046 lead. Shannon then scored at the buzzer to provide the final margin.

“We definitely showed some progress over Monday night,” Carey said. “Meghan Smith played a lot better tonight and Kayla Cryder did a nice job on defense. We’re still figuring out who works well together, so when we get someone with a hot hand, we stick with it.

“Our defense slowed down a little bit toward the end and gave up some shots that we weren’t giving up early, but we’ll get there.”

It might be too early to judge Chicago coaching

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com Ten games into the regular season, judging “Hoiball” just wouldn’t be fair.

After all, Fred Hoiberg has had a blurry-eyed point guard in Derrick Rose to deal with, as well as a team that has not fully jumped head-first into the playbook, with the firstyear Bulls coach admittedly forced to slow down the install process.

Then again, when does fair exactly factor in to how Bulls coaches are judged?

The criticism aimed at former coach Tom Thibodeau was by no means fair, whether it was the minutes he would hand out to players or his offensive Xs and Os downplayed, the narrative was a negative one from the organization by

the time he was dismissed last spring.

So what is fair to judge?

Well, there is a 10-game sample size with basically the same players on the court over the past two seasons. Surprisingly, what it showed is the “Hoiball” offense is yet to catch on with this group, or at least is a serious work in progress.

Get the hardhats on.

Like this season, the Thibodeau 2014-15 Bulls began the season 7-3. There are some eye-opening differences after that, however.

Hoiberg’s Bulls were averaging 100.9 points per game, while shooting 43 percent from the field. The 14-15 Thibodeau Bulls averaged 102.2 points per game through the first 10 games, shooting 46.7 percent from the field.

Defensively, Hoiberg’s Bulls were allowing 99 points per game, while holding the opposition to a 40.8 field goal percentage. Thibodeau’s version allowed 97.9 points per game, but a 42.8 field goal percentage.

Point differential also favored the Thibodeau Bulls, with a plus-4.3 per game compared with a plus-1.9.

Concerns?

Not yet. Not with a sample size this small. More importantly, with a group of players that are often second-guessing themselves.

“We have guys just over-thinking things sometimes,” forward Taj Gibson said. “This offense gives you some freedom, and we need to just trust coach and play for each other. It’s a pretty free offense, and we have to make the

right plays instead of the play where we pass too much or are too unselfish.”

Over-thinking shot selection hasn’t been the only problem. This is also a group that is still trying to figure out roles, as Hoiberg looks for the right mix in starting a game, coming off the bench, and maybe most importantly, finishing games.

In the Monday night win over Indiana, Hoiberg didn’t have Rose – who was nursing a sprained left ankle – so closed out with Jimmy Butler, Gibson and Tony Snell, while subbing offense for defense with Kirk Hinrich and E’Twaun Moore, as well as Joakim Noah and Pau Gasol.

Not exactly what veteran players want at the end of the game, but according to Gibson, a fact of life under Hoiberg that they are willing to accept

for now.

“Our team is real unselfish,” Gibson said. “We don’t really complain. We just want to see everyone succeed, but we understand that there’s a bigger goal at hand. That’s how I feel. I don’t really worry about all the other antics.”

In other words, Hoiberg’s offense is still in diapers and these are the growing pains.

Then there’s Rose, who always seems to have a different take on most things.

“I’m not worried about offense,” Rose said. “It’s just defense. We have slips when we come down and it’s like two or three possessions in a row. In this league when you’re dealing with professionals you can’t do that.

“Probably on the college level, but up here they make you pay for it.”

Being on the road for away games might do Hawks some good

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@shawmedia.com For all the usual reasons – the bonding, the nightly Mario Kart battles in the hotels, the distraction-free lifestyle of 12 nights away from home – the Blackhawks are looking forward to their annual circus trip.

But after a middling start to the season, the Hawks also need some victories. And the circus trip always provides a bunch of them.

“A little camaraderie, a little togetherness – it’s all a fun part about being a team,” coach Joel Quenneville said.

“There are always some good moments you remember over the course of the year, and hopefully winning’s going to be a part of this trip.”

It usually is.

In theory, the circus trip is a daunting task – an imposing gantlet of road games in hostile buildings and long late-night flights. The Hawks packed their bags and boarded a flight Tuesday to Edmonton, Alberta, and they won’t see Chicago again until the Sun-

day after Thanksgiving, as six games against Pacific Division opponents loom.

In practice, though, the Hawks’ trip has been much more make than break. They went 5-1 last season and 6-1 the season before. In fact, the last time the Hawks had a losing record on the circus trip was in 2007-08, when Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were rookies.

Given their history – and given the lousy start for basically the entire Pacific – the trip is less an arduous task and more a huge opportunity.

“We’ve always been excited to play on the road trip,” defenseman Duncan Keith said.

“A lot of fun buildings to play in, good-skating hockey teams that will be excited to play us.

We’re excited to do that.”

The timing couldn’t be better, either, as the Hawks are coming off two of their best games of the season in victories against the St. Louis Blues and Calgary Flames. They’re getting their act together at just the right time. The usual time, actually.

“We strung two games together,” Toews said. “It’s not a whole heck of a lot, but it’s a good start.”

first circus trip with the Hawks. That influx of new faces is a big reason for the Hawks’ inconsistent start and a big reason why the long trip – which features the annual trip to Las Vegas, thanks to a convenient three-day break – will be as crucial as ever.

As Quenneville put it, the trip can be boiled down to two mini-road trips: “Business, then we get a little time to have some fun, then back to business.”

“The road is where you really get to bond with your teammates,” winger Brandon Mashinter said. “That’s kind of key for me, so I can get to know my teammates a little

bit more. It’s just something that’s needed when you’re the new guy because it helps you get more comfortable.”

The Hawks’ victory Saturday in St. Louis was only their second in seven road games this season. But Toews said the new guys shouldn’t have any trouble meeting the Hawks’ lofty standards on the trip.

“We’re very conscious as a team of what we’re capable of and what we can do on this road trip,” Toews said. “You’ll be reminded of that whether you’ve been on this road trip before or not. I think that will be part of the talk in the locker room.”

I hope these bridge columns trap you into analyzing each deal. In today’s, there is more than one winning line, but there also is a trap to avoid.

South is in four spades. West leads his fourth-highest heart. What should declarer do?

North might raise one spade to two spades, but I much prefer one no-trump, especially with only three low spades. South then bids what he thinks he can make.

Note West’s opening lead. In general, do not look for a ruff if it will cost a natural trump trick.

It would be easy to win the first trick, draw two rounds of trumps, and go down. South would probably next unblock his diamond ace and play a club to dummy’s queen, but East would take the trick and return a heart. West would win and cash his spade queen before leading another heart. Unable to reach the dummy, declarer would also would lose a club to go down one.

It is all right to draw one round of trumps, but after cashing the diamond ace (not vital), South must not immediately lead a club. If he does, it can go club ace, club ruff, heart to the queen, club ruff. Instead, South should lead a heart himself to break the communication line of the defenders. Then he eventually will be able to ruff his fourth club in the dummy.

However, there is another possibility that appeals to me: Declarer does not win the first trick.

It’s important we sleep, but we don’t know why Note to Readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in August 2012.

Dear Dr. K: Everybody sleeps, but why is that? What does sleep do for us?

Dear Reader: I get this question a lot, and we’ve talked about it before in this column.

There is some new information that is interesting.

The honest answer is that we don’t know why it is we sleep. We spend about onethird of our lives doing it, so nature must have a reason for it. But it’s hard to ask nature questions – or, at least, to get an answer.

One possible reason for sleep is obvious: Our muscles

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff may need the rest. However, the heart is a muscle, and it doesn’t rest while we sleep, thank goodness. And like our heart, many of our other organs, such as the liver and kidneys, keep working.

Maybe our brains need rest? It makes sense, but I doubt it’s the reason. That’s because brain wave studies show that the brain is active while we sleep.

Sigmund Freud thought that we needed to sleep in order to dream. He thought we needed to dream in order

to deal with hidden conflicts, desires, fears and other psychological issues. Today, many psychiatrists doubt we need to dream for those reasons.

In the past 10 years, scientists here at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere have published a great deal of evidence that dreaming (and, hence, sleeping) is important in memory and learning.

That makes sense to me.

You’d think we’d need some time, without distractions, to sort through and to organize the new information that entered our brains the previous day. Sleep would be a good time for doing that.

Studying electrical signals given off by the brain (brain waves) and signals by our mus-

cles has allowed us to know that there are two major types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) or dreaming sleep, and non-REM or quiet sleep.

During the night, you move between different sleep stages in a fairly predictable pattern, alternating between REM and non-REM sleep.

During REM sleep, your eyes dart back and forth behind closed lids. Your body temperature rises. Your blood pressure increases.

Your heart rate and breathing speed up to daytime levels.

And yet your body hardly moves, except for intermittent twitches.

During deepest sleep, which is non-REM sleep, hormones are released that stimulate

repair and growth in your organs. And your immune system becomes primed to defend itself against infection.

Recent research has discovered that the “plumbing system” of the brain flushes wastes out of the brain during sleep. In tomorrow’s column I’ll talk about that in detail.

So, it must be obvious that I haven’t really answered your question. I don’t know exactly why we sleep.

Nor, as far as I know, does anyone else. But it clearly is important for the health of our brain and our body.
