Bill was born July 21, 1921, in South Wilmington, Illinois, the son of Cyril and Josephine (Bottino) Finn. He married Vivian K. Born at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City on August 1, 1942. She survives.

Also surviving are three children, Sheryl Finn,Morris, Illinois; Daniel Finn, Los Angeles, California; Patricia (Kim) Drechsel, Dwight, Illinois; three grandchildren, Kevin (Heather) Drechsel, Odell, Illinois; Brian Drechsel, El Paso, Illinois; Kelli Drechsel, Dwight, Illinois; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Chloe, and Alexis Drechsel; one sister Patricia Sayers, Coal City, Illinois; one brother Edward Finn, SouthWilmington, Illinois; sister-in-law, Charlotte Finn, South Wilmington, Illinois; brother-in-law and sisterin-law, Melvin and Eileen Mill, Spring, Texas; brother-in-law, Melvin Jackman, Gardner, Illinois.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-inlaw, Mary and Joseph Bacigalupo; brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Myrt Finn; brother-in-law, Norman Sayers; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry and Thelma Wickman; sister-in-law,

Norma Jackman; brother-in-law, Mervin Joneson.

Bill graduated from Gardner-South Wilmington High School with the class of 1938.

He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Skokie, Illinois, then enlisted in the army in December 1942. Bill was part of the 101st Airborne Division, Signal Corp, that participated in the invasion of France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was taken as a prisoner of war by the German army shortly after his glider plane crash landed near Carentan, France. Bill spent the next eight months as a P.O.W., being liberated by the Russians in February 1945. After returning from the war, Bill and his wife, Vivian, raised their family in E. Brooklyn and Coal City, Illinois.

He ran Finn’s Grocery Store in South Wilmington for a time, worked at the Joliet Arsenal, and Amoco Chemical in Joliet.

Besides serving his country, Bill spent countless hours serving his church and his community.

He was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, CCD Teacher, and Church Trustee at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church, and an active member of Braidwood Knights of Columbus Council #1574, 4th Degree. Bill was a charter mem-

ber of the Coal City Emergency Squad and the Coal City Area Club, fireman, Cub master and Boy Scout Leader, and a member of VFW St. Juvin Post 1336. Bill also assisted the Reeves family at Reeves Funeral Home for many years.

Bill loved camping, bowling, family vacations, going on cruises with Vivian, his bride of 72 years, and attending reunions with his 101st Airborne Division comrades. He will be remembered for his love of family, his generous and kind spirit, and his wonderful sense of humor.

Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.

When it was first founded, Auxiliary members contributed to the role of Morris Hospital by providing food, linens and basic supplies. Today, members provide volunteers and financial support through fundraising events.

MORRIS – The Morris Hospital Auxiliary Charity Gala returned to Morris as guests filled the Morris Country Club on Saturday evening to raise money for patient care carts.

The carts hold a laptop and medications, which allow the nurses to go room to room with everything they need for patient care.

“If anyone has to stay the night at the hospital they will understand the importance of it,” gala committee member Tracy Zabel said. “It’s a critical part of day-to-day function in the hospital.”

The gala, which has been held in Joliet for the past two years, came back to Morris because Morris is where the heart of the hospital is, and where committee members felt the event should be held.

Hannah Wehrle, development officer at Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers, said Monday the hospital wanted to be back in Grundy County and give back to local businesses.

“A lot of people wanted it to be held in Morris again,” committee member Cheryl Tesdal said. “We decided to host it at the Morris County Club because the food is wonderful and the staff worked hard to accommodate the 300 reservations we had.”

Wehrle said attendance was up this year and said she believes part of it is the move back to a Morris venue.

Funds were raised with silent and live auctions, as well as tickets sales and a raffle.

Guests were invited to bid on unique items like a ride on a Morris Fire Truck in the 2015 Grundy County Corn Festival Parade and a trip to Killarney, Ireland.

Many to thank a year after Diamond tornado

Coal City fire crews respond to fires

By JEAN TYRELL Shaw Media Correspondent COAL CITY – There were no village boundaries, according to Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc.

When it came to people assisting her tornado-ravaged community after the Nov. 17, 2013, disaster, Kernc said the cleanup was a seamless effort made up of people from the village, neighboring communities, counties and the state.

Where people were from didn’t matter, she said; everyone pitched in. Monetary contributions even came in from across the country.

In a one-year anniversary commemoration held Sunday at Coal City Community High School, “thank yous” were spoken to those who assisted with the cleanup in the aftermath of the tornado.

“We are 95 percent recov-

ered. We cannot take credit for that,” Kernc said.

She also spoke and introduced Coal City’s mayor, Neal Nelson, of whom she said, “No one wanted to have a tornado, but if you do, you need to have neighbor like them [Coal City].”

Kernc admitted not everyone was introduced, nor could they be. She said volunteers numbered in the thousands.

Administrative heads of many of the assisting organizations were brought to the stage to be personally thanked and hugged by Kernc.

Coal City High School Superintendent Kent Bugg spoke and introduced the high school show choir and Madrigals.

When students clamored to help last year, Bugg said he believed emergency responders, cleanup crews and families needed a mental pick-me-up.

Show Choir, and the Madrigals were sent to Diamond to perform in the streets for the crews of workers.

Bugg said there wasn’t a dry eye left when the students sang. Reprising their efforts from a year ago, the high schoolers once again provided the crowd with a performance that echoed hope and season’s greetings.

It would be hard not to be moved when the Madrigals sang an Irish blessing “May the wind be always at your back … until we meet again.”

Nelson, Kernc and Bugg called to the stage those organizations that helped or their representatives.

Kernc asked each division head to return to their respective departments and pass the thanks along to those who helped. She acknowledged her

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Coal City Fire Protection District was called out to two fires over the weekend.

On Friday, firefighters responded to a call in the 100 block of East Fourth Street in Coal City.

“Firefighters arrived on the scene to find smoke and a fire, which was contained to the furnace, was out when they got there,” said Lt. Nick Doerfler, the district’s information officer.

Doerfler said the district called additional units to assist because units from Coal City and surrounding departments already were assisting with a house fire in Morris.

Damage is estimated at less than $3,000. No injuries were reported.

On Sunday, the district received a call just after 10 a.m. for

smoke in a garage at 770 N. First St. in Carbon Hill.

The fire was contained to a back room near a wood stove, and already was extinguished on arrival.

“The homeowner had used a fire extinguisher to put the fire mostly out prior to Coal City fire department getting there,” Doerfler said.

Fire units checked the building and extinguished some smoldering areas, according to a news release.

The investigation determined the fire was caused by combustible materials being stored too close to a heating source. Damage is estimated at less than $3,000 and no injuries were reported.

On Sunday, Coal City was assisted by Braidwood, Braceville, Troy, Wilmington, Gardner, Channahon, Elwood and Morris departments, Morris EMS, as well as Coal City police and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.

Morris council OKs airport construction

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN-VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris City Council Monday approved about $15,000 in airport expenditures to move forward with its runway extension project.

During its regular meeting Monday night, the council unanimously approved spending the money on relocating wiring on property at the Morris Municipal Airport in order for the runway extension work to be completed.

To move forward with the project in the spring, the underground AT&T lines there need to be relocated and enclosed in conduit to accommodate the runway protection zone. Covering the wiring in conduit hopefully will allow for any future work on the wiring to be done by pulling it through the conduit, rather than having to bring equipment onto the protection zone, said Mayor Richard Kopczick.

The council approved paying $10,891 to relocate AT&T lines and no more than $3,908 to Ayers Electric to install 600 feet of 4-inch conduit and 600 feet of 2-inch conduit, and

1,200 feet of pull line.

Public works will do some of the wiring work, as well as Ayers and the utility companies, Kopczick said.

The original recommendation from the city’s Airport Committee included the rental of a trencher, but Public Works Director Jim Gretencord told the council the trencher will not be needed. This will bring the Ayers Electric bill down by $400 to $800, Kopczick said.

The wiring work is hoped to be completed in the next couple of weeks, he said after the meeting.

The Morris Airport runway extension project will allow larger aircraft to take off and land at Morris airport. When completed, the runway will be 5,500 feet long, have a new surface and include precision lights to make landings easier.

The runway extension is the first of many improvement projects scheduled in the next five years aimed at making the airport more compatible for corporate jets.

The city will seek reimbursement from the state and Federal Aviation Administration for the costs.

The markets are held on the I&M Canal throughout the summer, but the last one of the year, the Holiday Market, is held over two days at the fairgrounds. municipalities and families rebuild their homes and lives.

Also signing books was Jennifer Rizzo, who wrote “Creatively Christmas.” One of the homes featured in the book was that of Tessone.

The Coal City Madrigals provided Christmas caroling Friday night, and the Morris Madrigals entertained Saturday before departing to the Morris Community High School’s football playoff game.

“Both groups were simply amazing,” Tessone said.

years is Emily Burns of Minooka. She and her youngest son, Cody, are jewelry artists and designers for Old, New, Treasured and True.

“It’s wonderful,” Burns said of the event. “It’s very well done and well attended.

The people are very nice.”

Kylia Fauliski, one of the owners of Bebaws Favorites, pointed out that many people do online shopping these days, but the market continues to be a big success.

“This show always brings a lot of people, a lot of movement,” she said.

A couple of newcomers were Shari Brunetti of Lansing, and her daughter Sara Brunetti-Dow of St. Charles.

They have owned their business, Orchard House Women, for only months.

MORRIS – Through the years, the 3 French Hens Holiday Market has grown ... and grown.

Until finally, a larger venue was needed, and as a result, the Grundy County Fairgrounds has proved to be an ideal location for the thousands of people who shop for Christmas gifts, decorations and food.

In the past, the Holiday Market took place at the former Aldi’s store on Route 47 in Morris and at the Morris Country Club. This was the third year it was held at the fairgrounds.

“It’s the largest market [by number of vendors] we have held ... and the coldest,” said Monica Spence-Vogel, who organizes the 3 French Hens French Country Market with

The event, which drew an estimated crowd of 4,000 and 150 vendors over the weekend, featured a Starved Rock trolley that transported shoppers who wished to venture downtown. Most of the shopping was inside one of four buildings, however some vendors were outside as well.

“A lot of people are getting ready to decorate their homes for the holidays,” Tessone said. “And a lot of people are out to get gifts and their shopping done early.

“We even had families say that the market has now become a family tradition,” Tessone added. “We love hearing that.”

One of the first-time vendors was Nancy Skroko, who was selling and signing a historical romance book she wrote, “Live for Tomorrow.”

responds to emergencies MORRIS – The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District, along with other first responders, had a busy weekend between fighting a house fire and rescuing victims from a flipped car.

On Friday night, the Morris fire department battled a house fire at 2895 N. Route 47 for nearly five hours. The fire caused Route 47 to shut down south of the Illinois River bridge for part of the night.

The structure fire, which started in the fireplace, caused $250,000 in structural damage and a loss of $100,000 in contents.

“The fire started in the fireplace of the 8,000-square-foot home,” Deputy Chief Bob Wills said from the scene Friday night. “The fire got into the walls and ceiling.”

On Monday, Wills said more than 70 firefighters from area fire departments were used to battle the fire that made its way into the walls and ceiling of the 2∏story living room area where the fireplace is.

He said it was a labor-intensive fire call because crews had to cut into all the walls and ceiling to make sure it was out.

“They have to cut into all the void areas to make sure there isn’t more fire, because it was concealed in the walls and ceiling,” Wills said. “It was a cold, rough night, and they had to work around the weather conditions.”

Flipped vehicle: On Sunday afternoon, area first responders were busy again, this time because of an accident that caused a car to flip.

Two people were taken to the hospital, and a man was issued a citation after the car flipped and went into Nettle Creek.

The Morris fire department was called to the scene and those responding found a car upside down in the creek at the entrance to Gebhard Woods.

“When I arrived, I found the vehicle upside down in 4 feet of water with at least one occupant still trapped in the back seat and the other passengers trying to get her out of the vehicle,” Wills said Monday.

Driver Angel Algarin, 19, of Morris was issued a ticket for driving too fast for conditions and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Wills said a firefighter who arrived first went down the embankment to assist and was joined by Morris police officers.

With the help of the other passengers, they got the woman out of the vehicle.

Two occupants were taken by ambulance to Morris Hospital, where they were treated.

Later he attended Joliet Junior College and received his B.A. Degree from St. Francis College in Joliet. David married Mary Catherine “Kathi” Kostman on September 26, 1970, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Streator. They lived most of their married life in rural Morris.

He was employed for 10 years with the Joliet Police Department, later with G.E. Morris Operations and farmed for many years on the home farm in Saratoga Township.

Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Kathi; one daughter, Darci (Scott) Hemesath Sr. of Chicago; one son, Erik (Jessica)Phillips of Morris; four grandchildren, Scott Hemesath Jr., Ethan Holloway, Jakob and Luke Phillips; two sisters, Ann (John)Holderman of Florida and Linda Johnson of Florida; several nieces and nephews.

Defense acquits itself, slams door on Vikings

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – The Soldier Field scoreboard didn’t function properly most of the day, but there was no mistaking a 10-0 Bears deficit after 15 minutes.

It almost was a case of déjà vu for the Bears, who’d made a habit of falling behind early during a three-game skid, with the opposing tight end yet again inflicting the damage.

Except, aside from a 23yard Jerrick McKinnon run on the opening series – one extended by Willie Young jumping offsides – that led to a field goal, and another special teams breakdown on a beautifully executed fake punt on fourth-and-2 that set up Minnesota’s only touchdown, the Bears’ defense played with energy and an apparent chip on its shoulder after consecutive beatdowns.

In fact, in the second quarter, as the Bears were storm-

ing back on big plays from their biggest offensive stars to tie the score, the Bears’ defense was impenetrable.

Minnesota mustered only two first downs in the second and third quarters, failing to cross the 50-yard line until late in the fourth.

There were no receivers running open across the field or athletic quarterbacks making plays with their legs outside the pocket. But there was a consistent Bears pass rush, tighter coverage on the back end and the Bears’ star defenders, Lance Briggs and Jared Allen, to name a few, finally playing a starring role.

“It was just the fact that we had to go out there and play our style of football – going out there and compete and not give up big plays and give them cheap shots,” Tim Jennings said. “So, we were able to go out and execute and get back to playing disciplined. ... We just kind of relaxed and got back to sound football.”

The Bears permitted a sea-

son-low 243 yards – with 48 coming off the fake punt. Allen and Young each recorded sacks and consistently kept Teddy Bridgewater out of his comfort zone, and aside from the first-quarter touchdown, the entire defense played with much greater focus and discipline.

Sluggish Soldier Field: The Bears’ recent struggles were reflected in a high number of no-shows – 6,472. But the 55,320 in attendance witnessed scoreboard malfunctions that forced both teams to rely on the officials keeping time on the field as the game clocks were turned off.

“The Daktronics scoring and timing system experienced several malfunctions today during the game,” read a statement distributed after the game by the Bears. “At this point in time, it is undetermined what caused the issues. Daktronics is investigating whether the cause was software or hardware related. Despite a preventative

maintenance program with Daktronics that includes having 2 technicians on site for each game, the problem was not able to be corrected during the game.”

Points at premium: Despite racking up 468 yards, the Bears managed only 21 points. Robbie Gould missed his first field-goal attempt in three games, a 47-yarder wide right on the Bears’ opening series. But play caller Marc Trestman’s hot and cold aggressiveness also played a part. An odd Jay Cutler keep-

er on fourth-and-goal at the 1 on the Bears’ first secondhalf series was stuffed. That was after Trestman opted not to go for points with 1:05 remaining before half and his team retaining possession at the 26-yard line with a fourpoint lead. The Bears twice attempted – and converted – short fourth downs at the Minnesota 27- and 6-yard lines to give them a two-score lead on Brandon Marshall’s second touchdown almost midway through the fourth quarter.

Third-down defense: Mel Tucker’s unit stood tall on third down, holding the Vikings to a rate of 2 for 11. Credit goes in part to a pass rush that hit him five times, but also the coverage that forced Teddy Bridgewater to either throw the ball away or check down short of the sticks.

Scoring points: The 21 points the Bears scored didn’t reflect a team that gained 468 yards of offense and racked up 24 first downs. They left points off the board several times, from the botched QB sweep on fourth-andgoal at the 1 to the two interceptions thrown in Vikings territory. A penalty knocked them out of field goal range and they couldn’t cash in at the end of the half.

yards, including an unsportsmanlike conduct on Jay Cutler and offensive pass interference on Martellus Bennett, both of which led to stalled drives. They got their 15th false start of the year, after only nine in 2013. The Vikings drew only two flags.

Ball control: The Bears had the ball for 17 minutes longer than the Vikings, got 14 more first downs and controlled the pace of the game. They would’ve preferred more points out of it (see below), but the offense and run game kept the defense fresh and the Vikings without chances to score.

to go in the second quarter. The Bears woke up after another scoreless first quarter, and this play was reminiscent of the throws we saw when the Bears’ offense was second in the league in scoring. It put the Bears in the lead for the first time in a game since Week 6, and for good in their first home win.

At the end of the third quarter, the Buccaneers’ Blair Walsh missed a 38-yard field goal. It was only the kicker’s second miss inside 40 yards in 44 career opportunities (his other came at Soldier Field in 2012). That would have cut the Bears’ lead to 14-13; instead, the Bears engineered a 16-play, 72-yard touchdown drive that took 7:35 off the clock to take a 21-10 lead.

On second-and-3 from the Bears’ 8-yard line, Bridgewater attempted a zone read play, something that often has killed the Bears this season. Lance Briggs was in position, Bridgewater didn’t have great footing and went down for no gain. The defense held on third-and-3, forcing a field goal to stay up by eight points.

What it means: It’s a nice confidence boost for a team that needed it, but it still needs a miracle to get in the playoff hunt.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com PEORIA – For most of the last half of the football season, Morris had its back to the wall. After starting the season 2-4, the Redskins were in door-die mode. They responded with five straight wins and a berth in Saturday’s Class 5A quarterfinal against Peoria.

Morris was the victim of some big plays by the Lions early, and the Redskins found themselves trailing 19-0 in the first quarter. True to form, they rallied from adversity to take a 28-27 lead before Peoria’s big-play offense struck again and the Lions claimed a 40-28 decision.

Peoria (11-1) received the opening kickoff and needed just three plays to cover 48 yards. A 36-yard screen pass from Orlando Hernandez to Brandon Ruffin found the end zone, and the Lions owned a 7-0 lead just 28 seconds into the game.

Morris’ Jake Walker returned the ensuing kickoff beyond midfield, but the Redskins’ offense couldn’t get a first down. Keagan Sobol’s punt was downed at the Peoria 1-yard line. Peoria’s B.J. Harris then ran for two yards before Hernandez launched a deep pass to Rion Tutt, who had gotten behind the Morris defense. Tutt grabbed the pass in stride and streaked the rest of the way for a 97-yard touchdown. Morris’ T.J. Layne blocked the extra point, and Peoria held a 13-0 lead with 9:03 to play in the first quarter.

“Peoria is a very good football team,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “They hit a couple big plays on us early, and it got us out of our game a little bit. Their defensive line was very tough for us to run

on.”

Morris came to life in the second quarter when Kyle Overton forced a fumble that teammate Josh Hulbert recovered. The Redskins (7-5) got on the scoreboard when Griffin Sobol hit Walker with a 44-yard touchdown pass to make it 19-7. Peoria, however,

Griffin Sobol then kept the ball on an option and ran 51 yards before being pushed out at the 1. He snuck it in from there to make the score 27-14 at halftime.

Morris received the second-half kickoff and got a nine-yard TD run from Keagan Sobol to cut the lead to 27-21. Sobol then intercepted a pass to set the Redskins up at their own 44-yard line and, on the first play, receiver Nathan Guth caught a lateral and threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Balentine.

Luis Luna’s kick gave Morris a 28-27 lead with 8:36 to play in the third quarter.

“These kids showed a lot of heart,” Thorson said. “To come back and take the lead after being down by 19 early was something.”

With 4 minutes to play in the quarter, Peoria’s Harris bolted straight up the middle for a 64-yard touchdown to put the Lions ahead, 33-28. Peoria added another touchdown with 3:31 to go in the fourth to seal the win.

“The fight and heart in this team is second to none in my book,” Thorson said. “We just made some turnovers and mistakes that they took advantage of.”

The Coalers returned the favor Saturday afternoon, with much more on the line.

The Coalers, who never led during the first 47 minutes and 24 seconds, defeated Manteno, 29-28, in a Class 4A quarterfinal at the Dzuris Athletic Complex to earn their sixth trip to the state semifinals. Considering they were down 28-7 when the fourth quarter began, it is probably their most improbable such berth.

Although Jack Dibble had touchdown runs of 56, 6 and 65 yards earlier in the game, and 28 additional touchdowns before the game, he said none compare to his 9-yard rush with 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“Probably No. 1 in the memory bank so far. I mean, I’ll remember that run for forever.

That was awesome,” Dibble said. “It was a sweep call. My guard (Kurtis Smith) pulled out in front of me. He made an awesome block and I just had to sprint as fast as I could and get

to the pylon.”

The first Coaler points scored by anyone other than Dibble or kicker Joey Quinn then won the game. After quarterback Nick Micetich faked a handoff to Dibble, he gave the ball to 155-pound senior Corey Jurzak on an end-around.

Jurzak plunged past a Manteno defender into the end zone for the two-point conversion.

“Corey Jurzak – he’s a ton,” Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said. “That kid had him lined up, and it was 1-on-1, OK, who’s gonna make the play here? Corey made the play.”

Other than the first Dibble touchdown run, the Coalers had little go their way during the first 30 minutes of game time.

Manteno’s Tra’Von Done had a pair of first-half touchdown runs before exiting with an injury. His replacement, Logan Duvall, added a third rushing score late in the second quarter.

When Manteno’s Brian Steele scooped up a Dibble fumble and returned it 29 yards to the end zone with 7:22 left in the third

quarter, some Coaler fans headed for the exits.

Coal City (10-2) began its push to make those fans regret their decisions when, one play after a Coaler punt, linebacker Paul Jones recovered a Duvall fumble.

A fourth-down pass-interference penalty against Manteno (10-1) helped keep the drive alive, and Dibble ended by scoring from six yards out on the opening play of the fourth quarter.

“I knew we had a blitz coming. Marco (Alegria) hit him, I think. Ball popped out, (Brad Churnovic) hit it, it came to me and that was it,” Jones said.

“You always think that (a comeback is possible). I was hopeful, but I didn’t know … but we did.”

The Panthers’ next two drives resulted in a punt and a turnover on downs, respectively, and Dibble answered each with a touchdown carry.

Manteno ran out of time during its final drive after Churnovic sacked Panthers quarterback Ethan Kaufman.

After slow start, Hossa sees room for improvement

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com What separates Marian Hossa from a typical star player is what he does without the puck – his defensive awareness, his sneaky stick, his relentless backchecking and his penalty-killing. Defense and effort never slump, so Hossa gets a well-deserved pass most nights, regardless of what he does on the scoresheet.

But this is still a 1,000-point player and an eight-time 30-goal scorer. Hossa still needs to produce.

And up until this past week, Hossa wasn’t producing much at all. Through his first 13 games, he had only two goals and three assists, and he hasn’t scored in any of the Blackhawks’ eight games this month.

But after a two-assist night in the 6-2 rout Sunday of the Dallas

“I don’t remember a slower start than this in my career. Of course, it bothers me, but I try to stay positive. Obviously, there are lots of games [where] I feel really good. Points or goals don’t come as I would like. So I just try to work hard and stay positive.”

Marian Hossa Blackhawks forward

Stars – a game in which everybody on the Hawks seemed to get well offensively – he has five assists in his past five games.

It’s clear progress, but considering Hossa is coming off a 30-goal season – the most productive of his first five seasons in Chicago – it’s still not enough.

“I don’t remember a slower start than this in my career,” Hossa said. “Of course, it both-

ers me, but I try to stay positive. Obviously, there are lots of games [where] I feel really good.

Points or goals don’t come as I would like. So I just try to work hard and stay positive.”

It even got to the point where coach Joel Quenneville put Hossa on what was essentially a checking line for three games, lining him up with Ben Smith and Marcus Kruger on the third

unit. Of course, that’s one of the reasons Quenneville values Hossa so much – he can put the 35-year-old in nearly any situation.

“I’m never worried about him,” Quenneville said. “He brings a lot to the table. Whether he’s scoring or not, he does things the right way.”

Against the Stars, Hossa was reunited with Brandon Saad and Jonathan Toews – the same top line that powered the Hawks to the Presidents’ Trophy in 2013 – and the trio combined for two goals in the third period. It was the most visible Hossa had been on offense in weeks, with a season-high seven shots on goal to go along with his typical two hits and two takeaways on the defensive end.

Hossa said he wouldn’t press too hard to snap out of his drought. In his 17th season, he knows better. The pucks simply

aren’t going in; he has a shooting percentage of 3.5, far below his career mark of 12.7. A return to his career norm is almost inevitable.

“I don’t want to try to work too much,” he said. “I know what to do and how to play the game. When you start a season with more goals, everything loosens up, and you feel more relief and play an easier game.

Obviously, when things aren’t going your way, you start looking for some things [and] grab your stick a little bit tighter.”

He knows that the points will come. And he knows as long as he’s backchecking and pick-pocketing and contributing to the league’s top-ranked penalty-killing unit, then he’s still doing his job.

“We expect his production to start clicking,” Quenneville said. “He’s always got a purpose to his game.”

Rauner and Madigan can form working relationship In December, Bruce Rauner appeared on a WLS Radio talk show program and revealed that he planned to form a new campaign committee to counter the power of Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

“We’re gonna raise a PAC, we’re gonna raise a fund dedicated to the state Legislature, members of both parties who take the tough votes,” governor-elect Rauner said. “We’ve gotta protect the members who take tough votes.”

“Right now,” Rauner continued, “Madigan controls the Legislature from his little pot of cash. It isn’t that much money. And he runs the whole state government out of that pot. We need a pro-business, pro-growth, pro-limited government, pro-tax reduction PAC down there in Springfield working with the Legislature for those who take tough votes.”

Word is Rauner’s new legislative PAC will be launched relatively soon – perhaps after the governor-elect’s transition committee has finished its job.

Former governor Rod Blagojevich tried the same thing with his Move Illinois Forward PAC several years ago. As I pointed out on my blog when Rauner revealed his plans, Blagojevich’s PAC didn’t work out all that well, partly because Blagojevich was relying on a Democratic donor base which didn’t want to step too hard on Madigan’s toes.

An election day tally showed that Madigan had raised $5.7 million during the cycle, but add in the money raised by his targeted candidates and the total rises to $10.6 million, plus another $290,000 in reported independent expenditures.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin’s committees raised $4 million, but add a million dollars in independent expenditures and the money raised by Durkin’s candidates (much of it from contributions by the state Republican Party – via Rauner) and Durkin’s number rises to almost $7.9 million.

What Rauner is attempting to do here is strengthen his own hand as governor and maybe try to entice some of Speaker Madigan’s members into breaking party ranks on occasion.

But Madigan controls just about every aspect of a House Democrat’s existence.

Everything from office and staff assignments, to committee assignments, to bills getting called, to patronage and perks like his numerous season tickets at Chicago sports stadiums, you have to go through him.

Rauner will obviously have his own style, and he’ll have his own battles that will have to be fought with Madigan. But there’s no getting around the man. If the governor-elect meant it when he said on election night that he wants to find bipartisan solutions to the state’s many problems, he’ll notice how Madigan admires governors who forcefully attempt to overcome problems and move the state forward.

Skid Simon’s classic book, “Why You Lose at Bridge,” first appeared in 1945. Now, 69 years later, Julian Pottage has taken Simon’s characters and written another book, “Why You Still Lose at Bridge” (Master Point Press).

Chapter 11, “Failing to Count,” is a primary factor that separates good players from bad. In this example deal, South is in two spades. West leads the heart ace, then shifts to the diamond six. How should South proceed?

In the auction, South’s decision to compete with two spades on a soft 4-3-3-3 hand with only a queen and three jacks (no aces or kings) was highly debatable.

In normal circumstances, South would play dummy’s low diamond, hoping West had just led from the king. But here the bidding makes that impossible. West passed over his partner’s opening bid, but has already produced the heart ace; he cannot also have the diamond king.

South should rise with dummy’s ace, conveniently dropping East’s king. Then declarer can draw trumps and lead clubs twice through East (who must also have the top honors in that suit) to restrict his losers to three hearts and two clubs.

Unexpectedly, in a worthwhile book, the author fails to point out that if West continues hearts at trick two, East can win with his queen and cash the king, on which West can discard a club. Then three rounds of clubs, the last ruffed by West, defeat the contract.

Surely East would have encouraged a heart continuation by signaling with his heart nine at trick one.

New cancer treatments lessen side effects of chemotherapy Dear Doctor K: My mother was diagnosed with cancer and will soon begin chemotherapy. I’d like to understand how chemotherapy is given, and how it fights cancer.

Dear Reader: Chemotherapy uses drugs that kill cancerous cells, but only injure healthy cells. To understand chemotherapy, you need to understand what cancer is and what is different about cancer cells.

Our body contains 13 trillion cells. They all started from one cell, a cell that kept dividing. One cell became two, two became four, and so on.

But the cells kept dividing in a carefully controlled manner.

Early in our lives (even before

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff we were born), they had to keep dividing so that we would grow larger. After we are fully formed adults, some cells need to divide to replace dying old cells with younger ones.

In contrast, cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Chemotherapy (anti-cancer) drugs kill cancer cells or prevent them from growing and dividing. The drugs reach almost all parts of the body. This helps to kill

cancer cells that have spread from the original site of the cancer.

Chemotherapy is the core treatment for some cancers.

For other cancers, it is part of a larger strategy along with radiation and/or surgery.

Chemotherapy often requires a combination of two or more different anti-cancer drugs.

Cancer specialists (oncologists) design chemotherapy plans based on the cancer being treated and how far the cancer has spread.

Cancer chemotherapy may be designed to: • cure the cancer; • prevent the cancer from recurring after surgery;

• prevent the cancer from spreading to other organs; • decrease the size of a tumor to make surgery easier; • shrink the size of incurable cancer to help relieve symptoms.

Chemotherapy drugs can be given in a hospital, clinic, doctor’s office or at home. For most people, a bag filled with the liquid drug is attached to a tube that is inserted into a vein. The drug slowly drips into the patient’s body.

Sometimes the patient is able to swallow a pill instead, or get chemotherapy through an injection. People can receive chemotherapy daily, weekly or monthly.

Unfortunately, in addition to attacking cancer cells, chemotherapy drugs also injure normal, healthy cells. This can cause many side effects.

Many anti-cancer drugs, for example, affect the production of blood cells. This includes red blood cells that carry oxygen and platelets that help blood clot. Chemotherapy also inhibits the production of white blood cells that fight infection. That’s why a common side effect of chemotherapy is increased susceptibility to serious infections.
