Morris City Council approves private hangar lease agreements Both private leases will last 20 years

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris is set to have private corporate hangars at Morris Municipal Airport for the first time in more than 20 years.

The city council approved Monday night, with two 6-0 votes, separate but similar ground lease agreements with two private companies.

Alderman Bill Martin was absent because of work requirements.

The city has been discussing the possibility of private corporate hangars in Airport Committee meetings from

time to time the past six months.

The ground lease agreements between the city and two parties looking to build the hangars – 320 Briscoe LLC and ATS Executive Hangars LLC – are set for 20 years each. There then will be three 10-year options to renew the agreement.

Mayor Richard Kopczick said the agreements will bring added an revenue stream to airport, two new buildings and increased full sales. It also frees up other hangar sites to new renters.

The closest municipal airport with private corporate hangars is in Aurora, Airport Manager Jeff Vogen said in an earlier committee meeting.

The airport committee also recommended authorizing the mayor to enter an agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration for the purpose of commissioning a flight inspection of the

runway end identification lighting on runway 18 at the airport in the amount of $2033.08.

Council approved it with a 6-0 vote.

The inspection is a requirement to verify everything is working properly.

Kopczick said the cost goes to the FAA’s expense of using an airplane to perform the inspection, which will occur at night to check the lights.

Festival of Trees kicks off in Gardner with early preparation for Christmas

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Ida Schopp has teamed up with Stephanie Coleman and Standard Bank & Trust Co. to bring Christmas to the community of Gardner a little early this year.

As customers and community members enter the bank’s Gardner branch, they are greeted with Christmas trees, wreaths and a myriad of holiday goodies.

“Having the Festival of Trees has always been a dream of mine,” said Schopp, of Gardner. “It’s something I’ve wanted to take off my bucket list.”

With the help of Coleman and the bank, she can check it off.

As an addition to Gardner’s annual tree lighting, the bank is hosting a Festival of Trees to raise money for Gardner parks.

“She has been the machine behind all this,” Coleman said Monday morning about Schopp. “I took over this branch in March, and we’ve been looking for a way to help in the community.”

Schopp mentioned her dream to a teller, who put the two together, and the magic started.

Inside the main lobby people can bid on several fully-decorated trees that were donated by Schopp and other community members.

There also are raffle items out, which include decorated Christmas trees, decorations, gift certificates, a wine basket, a cookie-baking basket and more.

The event started 10 a.m.

Monday with an official kickoff party that included baked goods and popcorn.

It will end 6 p.m. Nov. 29, when the village holds its annual tree-lighting ceremony.

After the tree is lit, Coleman said people are invited over to the bank, where popcorn and

Geographical Information Services might become a county department Grundy looks to cut costs by creating new department, hiring more help

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County is one step closer to having a stand-alone Geographical Information Services Department.

The Grundy County Board’s Personnel Committee has forwarded the proposal onto the Finance Committee with a positive recommendation after receiving it from the Technology Committee with a positive recommendation.

“GIS does a lot of work to support many different departments,” Grundy County administrator Doug Pryor said Monday. “It’s vital to running a government organization.”

The GIS has been under the IT Department, but with expanding usage in many areas,

the Technology Committee heard from Pryor at an October meeting that the move to create a stand-alone department would save the county money.

Pryor said creating a standalone department and hiring a part-time employee to assist Dave Ostrander would save the county tens of thousands of dollars.

The part-time employee would bring mapping work inhouse that is contracted out, according to Ostrander, who currently is the only employee working with GIS. Pryor said if the Finance Committee approves the proposal, the county will separate the GIS Department and will post the job description for a part-time employee once human resources has the job de-

scription finalized.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said with the continued growth of the county and the dependence on the data, a separate department is needed.

“A large reason is the savings to the county by bringing mapping in-house,” Welter said.

He said the information can be made available to contractors, the assessor’s office and the 911 Center, as well as the Emergency Management Agency.

Ostrander and the GIS application he helped create was used after the June 22 tornado that hit Coal City.

The information gathered in the application was merged with the GIS assessment editor map, and has been combined with a second aerial flyover of

The application allowed assessor’s office personnel to sit at their desks and quickly compare the applications for reassessment filled out by homeowners whose homes were damaged during the tornado with actual photos and assessments filled out by former assessor Stephanie Kennedy and Ostrander.

SENECA – The Seneca FFA announced it has received a Living-to-Serve grant from the National FFA to create a disaster preparedness program for members of the community.

The FFA has partnered with the Seneca Emergency Management Agency to administer the grant that has been made possible through the National FFA Foundation and CSX Railroad, according to a news release from the Seneca FFA. The grant has helped create “Help-in-a-Helmet,” a program that provides essential items needed for low-income families in case of a disaster.

Some items to be included are a NOAA weather radio, a first

aid kit, whistles, personal hygiene products and an emergency blanket, according to the news release.

The items will put into baseball or softball helmets, which could be worn during a disaster.

The kits will be distributed confidentially through the Seneca Food Pantry and the Mazon Fire Department.

The FFA is asking the community to donate any old baseball/softball helmets, hard hats and 10-inch adjustable Crescent wrenches (that would be used to turn off any broken gas or water lines).

No mail delivery at post office on Thanksgiving

BEDFORD PARK – Retail services at all post offices will be closed Nov. 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Regularly scheduled mail delivery and post office box and caller services also will be suspended for the holiday. Central Illinois District Manager Peter Allen reminds customers to mail early.

“Thanksgiving traditionally kicks off the busy holiday mailing season,” Allen said in a news release. “Remember to mail early and be sure to follow the recommended mailing dates for mail to military addresses.”

To ensure timely delivery of holiday wishes by Christmas, cards and packages to military APO/FPO addresses overseas should be sent early. Mail will be delivered as scheduled Nov. 25, and post offices will resume retail lobby hours Nov. 27.

Christmas Cards show to feature local performers Proceeds to fund music scholarships

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Area musicians are invited to perform in Musical Christmas Cards on Dec. 20.

The show, which will feature local musical talent, will be held at First Presbyterian Church.

Inspired by a similar program by an Iowa town’s musical guild, First Presbyterian Church Rev. Roy Backus said the event aims to entertain, celebrate Christmas and grow local musical talent.

The show, the third in Morris, is a collaborative effort with Morris Community High School Band Boosters President Julie Buck, Band Director Jeff Muraida, Backus and others.

“We’ve seen some extremely good musicians and vocalists the first two times,” Backus said. “And it’s all ages – from senior citizens to elementary school.”

Interested acts are asked to perform seasonal music in the 90-minute concert, which will be comprised of solo and ensemble performances, two to three selections each, by amateur vocal and instrumental musicians.

It’s not a competition – instead, it’s for fellowship and

sharing performances with the public.

Proceeds from tickets and donations will go toward providing private music lesson scholarships to deserving area children.

It’s possible some of the scholarship recipients have yet to experience private lessons, Backus said, which can help a musician grow immensely.

“Musicians know that individuals who have worked hard on an instrument can often pass those skills on best in a one-on-one setting,” Backus said. “You can become a deeper and wider musician.”

Buck agreed, adding that a lack of confidence can often be hidden in a group.

“Individual lessons provide encouragement and understanding, which are definitely confidence builders,” Buck said. “Your technique should also improve.

Sometimes those students are learning a second instrument.”

Teenager struck by Jeep Cherokee on Saturday in hit-and-run incident

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris police are looking for information on a driver of a green or gray Jeep Cherokee who struck a teen Saturday evening, according to Morris Police Chief Brent Dite.

Four teenagers reported they were standing on the street behind a parked vehicle that was facing south about 4 p.m. in front of 720 Fulton St. in Morris when a man driving the Jeep allegedly swerved toward the group, striking one of the teens in the left arm with

the passenger side mirror.

“It doesn’t appear anyone was significantly hurt, but a case like this could have been tragic,” Dite said Monday.

Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle was a white man in his 30s with a bushy beard.

They said he was wearing a baseball cap.

Witnesses reported the man turned west onto Gould Park Drive and drove out of sight.

Dite said if anyone has information regarding the vehicle or the driver, they should call Morris police at 815-9422131.

Police: Braceville man was selling heroin

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – Police believe a Braceville man has been distributing heroin in southern Will County and northern Grundy County.

Dylan Schwartz, 26, was arrested Friday on a charge of drug possession and booked into the Grundy County Jail, according to Braidwood Police Chief Nick Ficarello.

“We’ve been investigating heroin activity and suspect Schwartz has been going up to Chicago every few days to

bring back 20 baggies of heroin to sell in this area,” Ficarello said.

Ficarello said Braidwood officers, Grundy deputies and agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad raided Schwartz’s residence in the 200 block of South Van Horn Street and recovered 40 baggies of heroin.

Will County jail records indicate Schwartz was arrested on charges of domestic battery and marijuana possession in 2013.

Morris man gets eight-year sentence for sexual assault

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A Morris man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for aggravated criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, along with criminal sexual assault and aggravated battery.

Friday’s sentencing came after Kenton Pellegrini, 45, was found guilty in April of the c h a r g e s b y Kenton Judge Robert Pellegrini Marsaglia following a bench trial. A Class X felony is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

On Monday, a notice of appeal was filed according to records on judici.com. Since May, Pellegrini has been represented in court by a different law firm than the one he used when he was found guilty. The original sentencing date was June 24.

Pellegrini was indicted in October 2013 after being arrested by Morris police the previous month following an investigation of a female screaming in the 1200 block of Brendan Drive. The indictment against him alleged Pellegrini committed the offenses against a family member and caused her physical harm.

Marsaglia said in April neither side in the case was

disputing sexual penetration occurred. His decision was based on whether it was forced and whether the victim consented.

He said the issue came down to credibility and that there were contradictions on both sides.

“I believe her. I don’t believe him,” Marsaglia said as he found Pellegrini guilty on all three charges.

A call Monday afternoon to Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland for comment was not immediately returned. A call late Monday afternoon to the Law Offices of Kathleen T. Zellner & Associates, the firm representing Pellegrini, also was not immediately returned.

Sportsmen For Charity support Special Connections, others MORRIS – On Oct. 28, the Grundy/Will Sportsmen For Charity presented Special Connections of Grundy County with a check for $5,000.

Founded in 1996 by a group of Grundy and Will County businessmen led by Jack Riley of Cardinal Transport, the mission of Sportsmen For Charity focuses on helping less fortunate children and young adults.

This year, the charity was able to help several organizations, including Special Connections, whose mission is to connect individuals with disabilities to their community through social interactions, education, recreational opportunities and shared information. Since 1999, the Sportsmen For Charity have held an annual event to raise money for the organizations they support.

This year’s event was held

June 5 at Cardinal Transport in Coal City and was the charity’s most successful to date.

From the event, contributions were made to Special Connections, as well to the Center for Disability Services, formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties and Coal City School District for its Tornado Relief fund for student’s families affected by the June 22 tornado in Coal City.

Born: Feb. 8, 1945 ; In Morris, IL Died: Oct. 29, 2015; in Lincoln, IL David E. Hexdall, age 70, of Lincoln, formerly of Morris, passed away Thursday evening, October 29, 2015 at his home.

A memorial service will be held Friday, November 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Pastor Gerald Steele officiating.

Inurnment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors provided by the Morris Color Guard. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Born February 8, 1945 in Morris, he was the son of Elmer and Alice(Granville) Hexdall. He graduated from Morris Community High School with the class of 1963. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served as a medical assistant and his tour of duty took him to Bitburg AB, Germany. For several years he was employed with Brandt Fertilizer Company in Lincoln.

David is survived by his sister, Joyce Hexdall of Peoria; one nephew, Dr. Aaron (Melitta) Hexdall and three great nephews, Desmond, Isaiah and Massimo Hexdall all of Florence, MA; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Paul, Thomas and James Hexdall.

Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Norm Ellenberger, former New Mexico coach, dies at 83 The ASSOCIATED PRESS ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Norm Ellenberger, the foot-stomping sideline showman who coached New Mexico to two Western Athletic Conference basketball titles in the 1970s, has died.

He was 83.

Ellenberger died Saturday night in his sleep at his cabin in Watersmeet, Michigan, said longtime friends Bob and Diana Briggs of Albuquerque.

They had just talked to him the day before and he was excited about the start of practice Monday at the high school where he was helping coach the boys’ basketball team.

“Absolutely to the last minute,” Bob Briggs said of Ellenberger’s drive to coach.

He had jotted down pages of notes from a recent preseason practice and could hardly wait for the official start of the season. “He was such a great coach,” Briggs said.

“He could see things on the basketball court that other coaches couldn’t. This was even obvious to his last day.”

His New Mexico career ended in December 1979 when an FBI wiretap uncovered evidence that the academic transcripts of several players were altered to ensure their

enrollment.

Ellenberger and his chief recruiter, Manny Goldstein, were fired and nine players were ruled ineligible.

Ellenberger was tried on federal and state charges, including mail fraud and filing false public vouchers. He was acquitted of the federal charges, but convicted on 21 state counts.

The presiding judge at the state trial declined to impose a jail sentence, saying Ellenberger was simply one cog in the highly competitive world of college athletics and had been prosecuted for trying to satisfy the school and fans’ demands that he produce a winning basketball program.

Ellenberger built a reputation as a flamboyant coach with the ability to mold winning, nationally ranked teams during his seven years as head coach at New Mexico.

His 1973-74 team was the first in school history to win an NCAA Tournament game.

Briggs said Ellenberger’s personality, along with his prowess for recognizing talent and his ability to distill the game down to the basics needed to win, overpowered “Lobogate,” which he described as a bump in the road for the popular coach.

“He was just so loved. He was one of a kind,” Briggs said.

Friends recalled Ellenberger as caring, engaging and fun-loving and pointed to his intensity on the bench as

well as his insatiable desire to share his love and knowledge of basketball with others.

Michael Cooper, who played under Ellenberger at New Mexico before going on to play for the Los Angeles Lakers, said Ellenberger broadened the horizons of his players and gave them the opportunity to be successful as athletes and in school.

“He was the most tenacious, most aggressive, most heartfelt coach I ever played for,” Cooper said Monday.

New Mexico head coach Craig Neal said he was saddened to hear of Ellenberger’s death.

“I’ve known Norm for a number of years, our thoughts and prayers are with the family right now,” Neal said in a statement.

After New Mexico, Ellenberger went on to work as an assistant for Don Haskins at UTEP, Bob Knight at Indiana and Tim Floyd with the Chicago Bulls.

He also spent the 2012 season as an assistant with the WNBA’s New York Liberty.

Company provides donations and volunteers aimed at enhancing program SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – LyondellBasell, one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies, recently awarded a corporate grant of $2,000 to Junior Achievement Chicago.

In addition to the donation, employees from the Morris Complex also have volunteered to teach the Junior Achievement program at two local schools in Channahon, the company said Nov. 10.

“We know the funding is important but it’s just as important, that we be present in the community because we want to make that connection,” said Brian Angwin, Morris Complex site manager. “With the Junior Achievement curriculum, we can have a true impact on these young lives. We can share financial experiences and life lessons that will guide them in the future.”

In the past 18 months, 32 LyondellBasell employees have taught more than 50 Junior Achievement classes at Pioneer Path and Galloway elementary schools, reaching more than 1,000 students from kindergarten to fourth grade.

Since 2013, the company has also donated $6,000 to support Junior Achievement Chicago.

BRACEVILLE – For the first time in Exelon’s history, women now occupy the top two leadership positions at a nuclear energy facility.

Marri Marchionda-Palmer and Amy Ferko, each of whom have nearly three decades of experience in nuclear power, have been promoted to site vice president and plant manager of Braidwood Generating Station, Exelon Generation said Monday.

“I look forward to continuing Braidwood Station’s reputation of high performance and providing clean, reliable power to the region,” Marchionda-Palmer said. “I will also work with our neighbors in Will County to build relationships and serve as a strong, active member in the nearby communities.”

Marchionda-Palmer’s primary responsibility will be to oversee the operation of Braidwood Station and to ensure the public is kept informed regarding the facility.

She replaces Mark Kanavos, who recently was named the site vice president at Byron Generating Station.

Marchionda-Palmer started her career as an engineer at Byron Station and later served in roles of increasing

responsibility in radiation protection and operations.

She would later work at Exelon’s nuclear headquarters in Warrenville and serve as regulatory assurance manager at Dresden Generating Station.

Marchionda-Palmer moved to Braidwood Station as the site’s operations director and recently served as the facility’s plant manager.

As plant manager, Ferko is responsible for the day-today operations of the plant, including oversight of the operations, maintenance, work control, chemistry/environmental and radiation protection departments.

Ferko has held several leadership positions of increasing responsibility in engineering, regulatory assurance, nuclear oversight and project management.

She most recently served as operations director at Braidwood.

Exelon operates 11 nuclear units at six sites in Illinois.

The facilities provide 48 percent of the state’s electricity and 90 percent of its carbon-free electricity.

Braidwood Station is about 60 miles southwest of Chicago in Will County and produces enough carbon-free electricity to power more than 2 million typical homes.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com FAIRBURY – The defense was good for the Morris girls basketball team Monday night in its season opener against Mahomet-Seymour in the Prairie Central Tournament.

Morris used its 1-3-1 zone and forced the Bulldogs into 24 turnovers. However, the Redskins were unable to take full advantage of those turnovers and dropped a 48-37 decision.

Still, Morris coach Kate Carey came away happy with what she saw.

“We know we are going to be a work in progress for a while,” she said. “What I saw tonight, I liked. I told the girls that if this had been game three of the year instead of game one, the results probably would have been different. I think we had some first-game jitters that led to us not shooting very well, but that’s going to happen.

“We got some shots we wanted, but they just didn’t fall. We’ll get to the point where they’re falling.”

Morris (0-1) took a 6-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Mahomet-Seymour rallied in the second quarter, outscoring the Redskins 16-8 to take a 21-14 halftime lead. The Bulldogs increased the lead to 3624 at the end of the third, but Morris was able to cut it to single digits a couple of times in the fourth before free throws iced the win for Mahomet.

Mya Shannon led Morris with 12 points, while Meghan Jurak scored eight, Meghan Smith scored seven points and Jessica Jurak had five.

Mahomet-Seymour went ahead 3-0 early on a pair of free throws by Jordan Hackmann and one by Isabel Charter (team-high 11 points).

Morris then sandwiched a pair of baskets by Shannon around a bucket by Meghan Jurak to take a 6-3 lead. Mahomet’s Rachel Stevens scored late in the first to pull to within 6-5.

“We won the first quarter and we won the fourth,” Carey said. “It was good to see that we still had the energy to play hard and get turnovers on defense in the fourth. We just needed to convert some of those into points, but that will come.

John Fox calls Sunday a ‘gratifying’ win

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – John Fox said the Bears “clicked as well as we have all season long” in Sunday’s 37-13 thrashing of the Rams, while also pointing out the challenge and significance of the win when speaking to the media Monday.

“In a short week, on the road, against an NFC opponent, which we hadn’t done yet – from that standpoint, it’s gratifying after the fact,” he said. “You’re just trying got get ‘W’s’; whether it’s by three or 30, it doesn’t really matter.

They all count the same.”

The win also came without Matt Forte and Eddie Royal, and with a clearly limited Alshon Jeffery, who had a “gutsy performance,” Fox said.

Jeffery’s presence created some “two-over-one situations to help our offensive football team,” Fox said, as the Rams’ safeties had to respect Jeffery’s presence.

“Considering the circumstances,” said Fox, “I thought he did outstanding.”

Without Pernell McPhee, the Bears’ defensive front racked up 10 QB hits, as Fox credited their effort after watching the tape.

“We played with good effort,” he said. “For the most part, other than the first drive, we pretty much fit where we needed to fit. All in all, I thought we had a good plan and our guys executed it.”

That first drive, when the Rams went 80 yards on seven plays to go up 7-0, marked the second game in a row the Bears allowed a touchdown on the opening drive. It’s something the team needs to improve, but Fox is pleased they’re responding.

“For whatever reason, we haven’t started as fast. I don’t know, jitters or what it might be. I can’t put my finger on it,

but we’re working at it,” he said. “The good news is we’ve responded and kind of made adjustments and gotten better the rest of the game.”

Cutler’s check: Fox said the Rams had a defensive look in the first half that gave the Bears the option to check to a run on third-and-10 in the fourth quarter, when Jay Cutler lateraled to Jeremy Langford, who picked up the first.

“Well, we didn’t fully execute it. We didn’t get it communicated outside quite as well as we’d like,” he said. “It was something they showed late in the first half, a look, we call it an 11-up look. Trying to audi-

ble to something good on that can be a little challenging. We had a good answer and we executed.”

Ready for the fake: Jeff Fisher’s history in fake punts led the Bears to keep their starting defense on the field in the fourth quarter, allowing them to prevent St. Louis from converting on a pass from its punter.

“They’ve done quite a bit of it historically and Jeff Fisher’s teams in the past, regardless of where he’s been, have executed those as well as anybody,” Fox said. “So we took extra precautions and our guys executed.”

Chicago’s Miller, McClellin find success after circuitous paths

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Zach Miller totaled four receiving touchdowns from 2009-11. After being out of the NFL in 201213, then suffering a year-ending leg injury last preseason, the Bears’ No. 2 tight end has three touchdowns in Weeks 9 and 10 in 2015.

Miller said Monday he’s appreciative for his chance with the Bears, which began under former general manager Phil Emery in 2014.

“Marketability wasn’t high,” Miller said. “… But it was Phil Emery was the GM

at the time. He was a guy that liked me when I was coming out, when he was in Kansas City. I was thankful that he gave me an opportunity and really thankful for Ryan [Pace] to do the same thing after a significant injury after last preseason.”

Emery has sent Miller a few text messages recently, an act the tight end called “humbling,” and it’s not the only former boss he’s heard from.

Miller said he’s heard from every former tight end coach, including Mike Tice last Monday night.

“It’s cool that those guys are still watching and still

care, because they’ve been a part of my journey all across the board,” Miller said.

It’s been a circuitous journey for Miller, to be sure. But he said he never considered the possibility the NFL wasn’t where he was supposed to be.

“I’m a believer of never having a Plan B because if you have a Plan B, you’re not focused on Plan A,” Miller said. “That’s kind of how I approached it. … I knew that if I could get back healthy, I knew I could produce.”

Shea returns: Back from his five-game absence with a knee injury, Shea McClellin regained his starting job Sunday

in St. Louis, leading the Bears in tackles and registering his first takeaway as an inside linebacker.

“It kind of feels like a weight off my shoulder a little bit,” McClellin said of the forced fumble and recovery.

In his first game action in more than a month, McClellin acknowledged a “few tweaks” Sunday, but they’re normal and something he’ll have to manage.

“A little sore. But that’s after any game,” he said. “I haven’t played for five weeks. So I feel like and old man kind of.”

After initial surprise, then brief trepidation when

he learned in the spring Vic Fangio planned to try him at his third position in four NFL campaigns, McClellin said he’s happy with the way things turned out.

“That’s where I played in high school,” he said. “So I think that’s where I get my instincts, is from that. I’m glad [Fangio] made that decision.

I think it’s worked out good.”

That doesn’t mean McClellin doesn’t miss opportunities to rush off the edge.

“Yeah, I miss it. It’s fun.

Hit the quarterback, that’s the best job in the NFL, right?”

McClellin said. “Except you get fined for it now.”

Instead, South should have led a diamond at trick three. West probably would have ducked. Declarer then could have drawn trumps, discarding dummy’s second diamond, and driven out West’s diamond ace. South would have lost only one heart, one diamond and one club.
