Morris • Rodney D. Price, 44, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on a charge of violating an order of protection and on a Livingston County failure-to-appear warrant for driving while license suspended.

• Bobby L. Howard, 18, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Wednesday on a charge of domestic battery.

Grundy County • Brian E. Suhling, 22, of Coal City, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on a contempt of court charge.

• Brittany D. Currin, 21, of Coal City, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Friday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic syringe.

Minooka • Timothy V. Cooper, 25, was arrested by Minooka police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Thursday on a charge of domestic battery.

BRIEFS Morris fire crews respond had been on scene for a hour and had opened the roof of the to fire north of Route 47 MORRIS – Fire crews were on scene at a structure fire Friday night in the 2000 block of north Route 47.

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District was called to a structure fire about 7:30 p.m. and mutual aid from numerous departments was called for assistance, according to scanner reports.

Route 47 south of the Illinois River bridge was closed down in both directions from Southmor Road to Dupont Road.

Water was being brought in because of lack of hydrants in the area, according to the scanner.

Hines mobile unit visit to Minooka canceled MINOOKA – Because of mechanical issues, the Hines Mobile Medical Unit will not be in Minooka as planned Monday.

According to a news release from the Veterans Assistance Commission of Grundy County, the medical unit cannot be moved inside either because of construction at the Minooka Village Hall.

The Hines MMU is scheduled for its next visit Dec. 1 in Morris.

Elizabeth “Betty” Zerboglio, age 75, of Coal City, passed away November 12, 2014, the Loyola University Medical Center.

Born September 4, 1939, in Coal City, Elizabeth Lynn was a daughter of the late Peter Paul and Bessie (Hejna) Zerboglio. She was a graduate of Coal City HS and went to work for APSA at the Joliet Arsenal in August of 1961. Her career moved her to Rock Island from where she retired from the US Government in July of 2003 after 42 years of service.

Betty was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, and in her free time enjoyed, sewing, playing bingo, and sports.

Betty will be remembered as an avid Cubs and Bears fan who took

Communities unite following damage from tornado one year ago

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – Ed Bischoff finished his home repairs a few weeks ago.

New roof, siding, windows and doors. His house was gray with white trim for the first 13 years he lived in the Diamond Estates subdivision. Now it’s beige.

The rebuilding is finished for most of the houses in Bischoff’s neighborhood that were damaged or destroyed by the Nov. 17, 2013, tornado. Some of them have been completely redesigned.

But Bischoff said the biggest improvement in the neighborhood isn’t cosmetic.

“The way everyone has come together to help each other has made us closer,” he said.

“You see people care. We’ve all spent more time together. It’s changed relationships.”

“Nobody was killed and you can always rebuild brick and mortar,” Bischoff said. “It’s been a really good experience, if you can have a good experience from a tornado.”

When the storms came through that Sunday afternoon, three people were hurt when a house collapsed near Berta and Spring roads in Coal City. Another man in the Diamond Estates neighborhood was hospitalized for a minor injury.

And 220 homes and businesses were damaged in Diamond, according to Terry Kernc, who was able to empathize beyond her duties as mayor.

tornado was devastating [to go through], but it gave me a good basis,” she recalled.

Kernc said about half of the homes affected had minor damage – needing windows and siding replaced. The damage to other property varied, though recurring inspections sometimes meant a house initially listed with “moderate damage” turned out to need “major” repair, she said.

“You really learn not all insurance companies are created equal,” Kernc said. “And there was some backlash from companies on village standards.

We found some middle ground to help residents with repairs, but always wanted to place the priority on safety.”

Rasmusson eyes Grundy County chairman job Two Republican board members want top spot; vote set for Dec. 1

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Another Grundy County Board member has said he wants to be the next County Board chairman.

Republican Eric Rasmusson, who represents District 2, said Friday he has the time and desire to take on the chairman position. Rasmusson announced his bid for the position at Monday’s County Board meeting.

The County Board is set to vote Dec. 1 on its new chairman.

Rasmusson’s announcement follows Republican County Board Vice Chairman David Welter’s announcement last week he is seeking the chairman position.

Current Chairman Ron Severson is retiring from the board after 12 years. Severson ran against state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, for the 75th District in the primary, but lost.

“I bring a lot of experience to the board,” Rasmusson said.

“I’ve been in a lot of leadership positions and I have the time required to give to the position.”

Rasmusson served 12 years on the Saratoga School Board, six as president. He also served as a Saratoga Township Trustee for 14 years, and has held several leadership positions with his church council.

“My motto is don’t tell me what you are going to do, show me what you’ve done,” he said.

Rasmusson said the different leadership positions have taught him how to go through negotiations and how to calm boards he’s served on.

“Several people have said I bring a calm to the boards I serve. I think it’s essential to be there for the right reasons and not have an agenda,” he said.

“We don’t want someone who is led by emotions.”

Rasmusson said the county has a lack of policy and many questions have been raised about job responsibilities. He feels the chairman needs to help work on these policies so people know what their job is, as well as have procedures on how to rectify problems.

“Some committees are not clear on their role,” he said.

“Creating policy is boring, tedious work, but we need to do it to alleviate most of the situations.”

He said his experience on the school board taught him to listen to other board members and find out where their thoughts are coming from.

“Even when someone is hotheaded, they have something to offer,” he said. “By listening to everyone you can take the best solution and come up with good policies and get a consensus to how the board needs to move forward.”

Because he is a farmer, Rasmusson said he will have the time needed to do the job well.

“I have no hard feelings that Eric has a desire to serve. I’ll support him if he is chosen and he will support me if I am,” Welter said Friday.

Welter does have a full-time job outside of the County Board, but said his employer has encouraged him to seek the chairman position and he would be able to attend the meetings required of the position.

Welter has been on the Grundy County Board for four years, and served two of those years as vice chairman. He said he has been involved in three union negotiations and been an integral part of passing balanced budgets, as well as dealt with

personnel and finance issues.

“I am able to step into the position with experience,” Welter said. “Others will have more of a learning curve.”

Grundy County Republican Party Chairman Mike Mattingly said the Republican Central Committee doesn’t make an endorsement and anyone on the board has the right to put his or her name in.

The Republican board members are set to caucus next week to officially nominate choices for chairman and vice chairman, Welter said.

No one else has publicly declared the desire to run for Grundy County Board chair.

Changes coming to state Legislature

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – In January, Illinois will have a new political landscape, with Republican Governor-elect Bruce Rauner and a Democrat-controlled Legislature with veto-proof majorities taking office.

It’s a dynamic that could work out in both parties’ favor – and for the state’s fiscal situation – if they meet halfway instead of giving into stalemates and standoffs, said Kent Redfield, a political expert and emeritus professor of political science at the University of Illinois in Springfield.

If history is any indication, Winnetka businessman Rauner and veteran House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, may have a better working relationship than initially suggested, he said.

Madigan had a great working relationship with past Republican Gov. George Ryan, too, he said, whereas Rod Blagojevich’s time in office was filled with “stalemates, shutdowns and overtime legislative sessions,” mainly because of Madi-

gan’s distaste for the now-imprisoned governor.

And, he said, Madigan often gave a cold shoulder to Democrat Pat Quinn.

Just as well, Rauner might have a tough time dealing with the Illinois House and Senate, both of which have veto-proof majorities.

Parties eye political moves for next year

But looking ahead, it might be in the Democrats’ best interest to hold off on raising the minimum wage until well after Republican Governor-elect Bruce Rauner is sworn into office, said Kent Redfield, a political expert and emeritus professor of political science at the University of Illinois Springfield.

While pushing forward with the issue now might put some “Democrat skin on the wall” with voters, the issue won’t be available later on to leverage votes on controversial legislation, he said.

Redfield sees the minimum wage issue resurfacing closer to the 2016 election – when two-

thirds of Illinois Senate seats and all 118 seats in the Illinois House are at stake.

Holding off on that issue would give Madigan leverage with his own party members, who may need some persuasion when Rauner’s business-friendly reforms on workers’ compensation and taxes come up for a vote.

“This is good for [Rauner], but also good for the Democrats who are up for re-election. It would be harder to talk about the do-nothing and anti-business Democratic legislature if people can say state government is doing a good job,” Redfield said. “I think that’s why there’s a possibility that you won’t do minimum wage in the fall.

“The goal in all of this would be getting the business community to say, ‘This is a serious effort and we applaud the cooperation of both parties,’ ” he said.

Both chambers will likely hold off on an income tax hike vote until Rauner gives his budget address in February, placing the governor-elect – and the GOP – in a tight spot.

The ball is essentially in their court, said Rep. Larry Walsh, D-Elwood.

“We’ll have to see how Rauner wants to address that,” he said. “We’ll have to see where his caucus is on this. There doesn’t seem to be a consensus among our caucus to push through a tax hike. This is something the governor-elect will have to address.”

But Johnson said plans to hire a new assistant are on hold until a new director is selected, so the director can have input on selecting the new assistant.

“The assistant works for the director. It’s only a two-person department,” she said. “You would want to have input in who your assistant’s going to be.”

MORRIS – The Morris City Council is set to take action Monday on two expenses to move the Morris Municipal Airport runway extension project along.

The city’s Airport Committee this week approved recommendations to the council to spend almost $15,000 on wire work required for the runway to be extended.

The Morris Airport runway extension project will allow larger aircraft to take off and land at Morris airport.

When completed, the runway will be 5,500 feet long, have a new surface and include precision lights to make landings easier.

MORRIS – Applications for the human resources director position at Grundy County are set to be reviewed this weekend by members of the Personnel Committee.

This comes just a few days after the county board accepted the resignation of Debra Johnson as human resources director Monday night. Each Personnel Committee member will review the 13 applications and recommend who he or she thinks should be interviewed.

The committee plans to interview candidates Thursday or Friday of next week.

“We didn’t want to consider hiring anyone until we received all of the applications,” committee Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said Friday. “Sometimes it’s a second or third interview process. I’m confident we’ll find a good candidate.”

At Thursday’s meeting, members of the Personnel Committee approved for Johnson to work intermittently as human resources director and then transition to training the selected candidate.

Johnson, who starts her part-time job the week of Dec. 1, will help train the new hire on nights and weekends on an hourly basis.

“I’m just working hard trying to make this transition as easy as possible for the employees’ sake. It’s a challenging time,” Johnson said.

Geiger said the county is appreciative Johnson is staying to help with the transition. She added the human resources director position is one of the most important positions within the county.

“They are a resource for all employees. If an employee has any problems, potentially insurance questions, they would go to the HR director,” Geiger said. “It’s important that position be filled.”

Johnson previously said she resigned because the Personnel Committee insisted it wanted a full-time human resources director instead of part time.

The city airport is a B airport, Kopczick said. The Class C category services larger aircraft, which is the hope for the Morris airport’s future.

Widening of the runway from 75 feet to 100 feet in width also was discussed, as well as overlaying and re-striping the runway to allow for heavier aircraft.

“It’s all in preparation for the runway extension,” Kopczick said.

The city will seek reimbursement from the state and Federal Aviation Administration for the costs.

Families rebuilding houses, lives following tornado

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DIAMOND – Joe and Lisa Pape are hoping that by Thanksgiving, they will be sitting around the table in their home, thankful they have one another.

Joe and Lisa, along with their children, Erica and Joey, were coming home from church Nov. 17, 2013, when they saw the dark clouds that would become a tornado that severely damaged their house on Crystal Lane in Diamond Estates Subdivision.

“The family came through OK,” Joe Pape said. “This house is just sticks and bricks.”

Nearly one year after a tornado devastated families in Diamond and Coal City, some are still working to get home. Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc said the village estimates about 95 percent of the residents are back in their home.

The Pape home had a wide array of damage. The roof had to be replaced, as did the siding and windows. The shed was totaled, along with the family’s vehicles. Everything from a lawn mower to sombreros were found in the family pool, which was torn down.

“It was like a car going through your house at 60 miles per hour,” Lisa Pape said.

Even items they thought were OK – like appliances they assumed were airtight – had to be replaced.

“It was the oddest thing: The ice bucket sits inside the freezer and when we opened it, there was insulation in there.

Then as we looked around we found it inside the dishwasher, inside light fixtures,” Joe Pape said. “Lisa went to get a glass out of the cabinet and there was insulation in it. We don’t know how it got in everywhere.”

The family spent two weeks in a hotel after the tornado, before finding a rental in Coal City. On Wednesday, the Papes sat in their mostly finished home, waiting for an inspector to see if they would get their

Kernc said while the community has healed, many residents – whether their house had minor damage or was a complete tear down – still have feelings of anxiety.

“I don’t think those who have been impacted will ever get over the fear and anxiety,” Kernc said.

Jodi Dennison, owner of Naked Sun, said business has been slow this year as many regular customers were unable to stay in their homes. Others who stayed were focused on repairs. Naked Sun was out of business for three days following the storm but has closed intermittently during the past year while the wall near the tanning booths was repaired. his congregation returned in August to what is left of the church building.

Before being able to use the front of the church again, the congregation met Sundays at Reed-Custer High School in Braidwood. Thompson estimated membership has dropped from 200 to 165 since the tornado.

“This has taught us patience, that’s for sure,” Thompson said. “The lack of room has been a challenge.”

The congregation is meeting in the Kid’s Church section of the building, and a second service was added on Sunday to accommodate the people that come each week.

The church picked up its permit Wednesday to start construction on the building. The structure lost it’s sanctuary and Sunday school rooms, as well as the fellowship hall. It has redesigned an earlier plan to incorporate classrooms and a fellowship hall in a bigger facility.

Thompson said the church has encountered obstacles, including having to rebuild up to fire and ADA code that wasn’t in effect when it was originally built in 1985. In

“We also didn’t realize the concrete pad wasn’t covered by the insurance.”

But Thompson said three new ministries have started as a result of community interaction since the storm. “The Community Connection” focuses on anyone struggling while archery lessons reinforce the importance of aiming at a moral target.

The church also has coordinated with the Department of Children and Family Services on a camp for neglected and abused children.

The church hopes to be rebuilt and have the new sanctuary open for Easter service, so members can celebrate both Jesus and their church being risen.

“God willing, we’ll get good weather,” Thompson said.

MORRIS – The tornado that hit the Diamond and Coal City area last year caused major damage from which families are still recovering. But it also united a community to come together to help one another.

Numerous local organizations responded to the area’s needs, including Operation St. Nick, the Community Foundation of Grundy County, We Care of Grundy County and the United Way of Grundy County. These four organizations worked together to raise funds to provide financial assistance to the victims of the tornado to rebuild their lives.

More than $400,000 was raised in the tornado relief fund, said Julie Buck, executive director of the Community Foundation.

All the proceeds have been dispersed among tornado victims in the Diamond and Coal City area, according to Joe Schmitz, president of Operation St. Nick.

“We exhausted all the funds to the families that had damage to their homes; every penny of it,” Schmitz said.

Schmitz said the four organizations combined will form a disaster relief program by Jan. 1.

“In all honesty, FEMA and other organizations don’t react quick enough for people who need bedding and clothing tomorrow,” Schmitz said. “We have to put money aside so if this happens again we can react quickly.”

He said the parameters and details of the relief organization still need to be worked out.

“At this point, I’m not sure where the money will come from,” Schmitz said.

“You can have all the programs in the world, but if you don’t have the money it’s not going to work.”

Kernc said fewer than 10 houses, most in Diamond Estates, were considered totally destroyed, but several more homeowners chose to completely rebuild.

Like Bischoff, the mayor said residents could see the positive effect of human kindness everyday since the tornado because of consistent donations and volunteer efforts.

“We did not have a morale problem,” Kernc said.

While there were procedures already in place, Kernc said village staff learned some valuable lessons about emergency management and made adjustments.

“I did not realize how much debris a tornado creates. We literally had a thousand volunteers to clean up. They have cars that need to park somewhere.

Donations are wonderful, but where do you put them when the place you have to put them fills up,” Kernc said. “You think you’re prepared, but when disaster really hits you, there are some things you didn’t realize.”

The problems would have been much worse if the tornado had not missed the village’s water and wastewater treatment plants by “the length of a football field,” Kernc said.

Kernc admitted response to the tornado took away from the village’s planned focus on economic development in 2014. But a recent $1 million transportation grant will complete a third lane on Route 113, along the third of the village that is in Will County. The Grundy County section was widened for a center turn lane two years ago.

Route 113 is the first exit off Interstate 55 south of the proposed interchange with the Illiana Expressway and has been the subject of conversation between the vil-

THANK YOU TO THE 75TH DISTRICT VOTERS To the Editor: I would like to take a moment to thank the voters of the 75th District for their overwhelming support in the Nov. 4 election.

I am honored and humbled to have earned the people’s trust and support for the next two years. I will be returning to Springfield on Nov. 19 for the start of the General Assembly’s fall session, during which I will fight Gov. Pat Quinn’s attempt to get lame-duck legislators to vote for higher taxes before he leaves office in January.

NOW IS THE TIME FOR ACTION IN ILLINOIS To the Editor: After months of seemingly endless negative TV and radio campaign ads, plus countless mailings, the election is blissfully over.

For the governor’s race alone, it is estimated that $100 million was spent as the two major candidates duked it out for our votes. As the executive director of a community-based nonprofit organization that faces funding reductions annually, I think of the thousands of ways this $100 million could have been used to benefit the tremendous number of Illinoisans who face a dearth of basic human needs each day.

It is now time for those who have been elected to follow through with their campaign promises.

The countless social ills that plagued our state before Nov. 4 remain: homelessness, infant/ child/elder abuse, illiteracy, unemployment, people with disabilities stuck in nursing homes, lack of community-based mental health and substance abuse services,

prenatal care, child care, and the list continues.

No one is immune from either being in one of these situations or having a friend who is. At some point in our lives, we all need “shoulders to stand on” to assist us in achieving our unique place as productive members of society. These are the shoulders of teachers, social workers, mentors, neighborhood leaders, parents.

As strong as they are, these shoulders are also in need of continuous strengthening.

All of us must do our part in making sure that our elected officials remain faithful to their campaign promises, such as creating competitive jobs, improving education, and restoring balance to our economy. We live in a democracy where everyone’s voice must be heard.

I urge all of us to become familiar with those who represent us on all levels: city, township, county, state and federal. The shoulders on which we stand will become stronger as long as we make our elected officials aware of what we the voters want.

Now is the time for action.

Let us promise one another that we will unite and use “people power” to ensure that legislators act on behalf of those citizens they represent and not those with the biggest checkbooks.

Rebuilding after the storm A year ago, Mother Nature amazed us with her ferocity when a tornado ravaged Coal City and Diamond.

When the winds subsided and the rain stopped, at least four were injured, and the 12-mile path the tornado cut through our area left more than 200 buildings damaged, uprooted trees and left power lines dangling.

It was one of many tornadoes that day in the state: The winds were so strong Nov. 17, 2013, that paperwork and photos from Washington, Ill., were found in Morris.

Last year’s tornado left destruction in its wake. It looked like a scene from a disaster movie – but this wasn’t a movie set with Hollywood stars in makeup. The winds left too much debris behind for it to be wrapped up with a bow in just two hours.

Natural disasters unexpectedly put us in situations most wouldn’t wish upon their worst enemy. There is emotional, mental and physical pain.

There is unimaginable loss of cherished heirlooms, and the feeling that one isn’t safe anywhere – even at homes.

But as often is the case when disaster hits, it is the reaction of the community, not the destruction it left, that defines the event.

And in this case, it was seeing the best of our neigh-

bors. Local communities stepped up to start the long process of patching up the shattered hopes and dreams the tornado left.

In the immediate aftermath, we saw emergency crews rush to help. Neighbors – strangers, even – helped dig through debris to help those hardest hit. Donations of clothing, food, shelter and money poured in.

And that wasn’t just the first “day after,” or the second. The generosity and compassion lasted weeks.

Even through the fatigue, the Coal City and Diamond communities came together to rebuild, joined by thousands of volunteers who came to help.

It hasn’t been easy. A year later, some in Coal City and Diamond still aren’t in their homes. There were struggles with insurance companies.

But that’s just the bricks and mortar. The spirit of Coal City and Diamond was never damaged. Winds, no matter how strong, could not tear apart a community identity as solid as that.

A year later, our thoughts and prayers remain with those affected by the tornado.

We hope those still rebuilding are soon in their homes. Most of all, we hope the spirit and faith of these communities remains as unwavering as it did the day the tornado tried – and failed – to sweep it away.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Morris senior will continue basketball journey at University of Missouri-St. Louis MORRIS – When Julie Jurasits first picked up a basketball in fifth grade, she had no idea where it would lead her.

The long road that started at a California grade school, took her to Nettle Creek School for junior high and continued at Morris Community High School, found another stop Friday as Jurasits, a guard/forward for the Morris girls basketball team, signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her career at Division II University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Jurasits was an all-Northern Illinois Big 12 East pick last season for the Redskins after averaging 16 points and nine rebounds a game. She helped lead Morris to a 9-16 record last year.

For her, it wasn’t a matter of whether or not to play basketball in college, just a matter of where to do it.

“Ever since I picked up a basketball in fifth grade, I knew,” Jurasits said. “I just loved the game from the time I started playing it, and I have never played another sport in school. I knew I wanted to play in college, and now it’s nice to have this decision out of the way so I can just concentrate on basketball in my last year of high school.”

Missouri-St. Louis was in competition with Maryville University, also located in St. Louis, for Jurasits’ services.

UMSL won out by being friendly.

“It was a very tough decision,” admitted Jurasits, who also drew interest from University of St. Francis in Joliet.

“Both of them were very close, but in the back of my mind, I think I always wanted to go to Missouri-St. Louis. I met with the coaches, and their style of play fits mine pretty well.

“I was also able to hang out with some of the girls on the team when I visited Missouri-St. Louis and I know I will fit in with them. I didn’t get that opportunity at Maryville, so I

think that was the final part of the decision. I wanted to go where I knew I would fit in the best.

“I want to major in sports management, and Maryville actually has that. But Missouri-St. Louis does have business, which I will major in. That way, I can still go into sports management if I want, but I am not limited to it. St. Louis will give me more options.”

Morris coach Kate Carey feels Jurasits made the right choice, and that she will be able to transition well to the college level.

“This is a big day for her,” Carey said. “It’s a big change going from playing in high school to playing in college.

It kind of becomes your job in college. But she loves the game so much. They say you never work a day if you love your job, and she definitely loves the game.

“I think Missouri-St. Louis is a very good fit for her. I know she had a good visit there and it’s a good fit socially for her. I think she might have been able to compete at the Division I level if that is what she wanted to do, but I think the Division

II level is somewhere she can thrive. It’s perfect for her. And, now that the decision is made, she can just relax this season and go out and play ball. She

doesn’t have to worry about that part of her life. That goal is met and now this season can be about having fun and helping the team win.”

Bears match up well with Vikings Winnable game if team shows up On the face of it, the Minnesota Vikings should be tailor made for these Bears.

Although they’ve actually continued to run the ball fairly well even without Adrian Peterson – through 10 weeks, they are 10th in the NFL in rushing – they are 27th in total offense.

The Bears also should have the advantage of a possessed Jared Allen.

It is easy to believe the likely future Hall of Famer when he says he has no ill will toward his former team, but let’s be honest, nobody wants to be told they’re not wanted any longer.

It’s almost impossible to believe Allen won’t be out to show the Vikings he still has some gas left in the tank, and he also will have the advantage of a former No. 4 overall draft pick, Matt Kalil who was

drafted to be a franchise left tackle recently playing some of the worst football of his career.

Willie Young, on the other side, also could have his way with the massive Phil Loadholt. At 6-foot-8, 343 pounds Loadholt cannot be bull rushed, but he will at times struggle with more athletic speed rushers such as Young.

If both need help, Jeremiah Ratliff should have a field day inside.

There is, however, another side to that coin. Vladimir Ducasse is the right guard at 6-5, 325 pounds. When offensive coordinator Norv Turner decides to load up the horses and run the ball behind his wall of a right side, they can be tough to stop.

Rookie Jerick McKinnon is one of the best rookie running backs in the league, and Matt Asiata has been tough to stop in the red zone.

You can, however, load the box against these guys, as rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is wearing his

Greg Jennings is productive as a possession-type receiver, but Cordarrelle Patterson was supposed to be the home run hitter, and he’s been a big disappointment.

This could be a week for Bears cornerbacks Kyle Fuller and Tim Jennings to get healthy.

The other side of the ball is trickier.

The Vikings’ first-round pick this year, Anthony Barr,

has become a monster at outside linebacker. Last year’s first choice, Sharrif Floyd, is emerging as a dynamic three technique, and fifth-year right end Everson Griffen got a big payday to stay in Minnesota and has emerged as a force in the pass rush.

The Vikings are tied for third in the NFL with 30 sacks, nine from Griffen.

Jay Cutler’s health Sunday may depend on how Brian de La Puente steps in at guard for Matt Slauson and how Michael Ola most likely replaces Jordan Mills at right tackle with Cutler’s sixth part-time protector, Eben Britton, still out recovering from an appendectomy.

Although running back Matt Forte is tied for fifth in the NFL with 61 receptions, he may have to stay home more than usual to help protect Cutler, and tight end Martellus Bennett is on the mend but still nursing tender ribs.

side of the ball is at cornerback. Xavier Rhodes and Captain Munnerlyn are just guys, while Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery are reigning Pro Bowlers.

Rhodes is a big corner at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, which helps against the Bears’ receivers, but Munnerlyn is 5-foot-9, 185 pounds, and will be at a big disadvantage with whichever wideout he draws.

All of that, however, is based on all things being equal. The fact is, the Bears haven’t shown up for their past three games, whereas the Vikings are getting better every week under wildly popular rookie head coach Mike Zimmer.

If the Bears show up, this is a winnable game. The question is, considering they haven’t shown up in recent weeks, what makes us think they will this week?

South’s four diamonds was risky because it could have been passed out. But when the auction played out perfectly, South might well have bid seven diamonds over five spades. North had to be void in spades, and declarer could have either ruffed all of her spade losers or established North’s heart suit.

If North had king-high hearts, it would have been just too bad ... unlucky!

Here, seven diamonds would have been easy to make.
