er uncovered about 52 pounds of marijuana inside the vehicle, with an estimated street value of $500,000, according to a Richard T. Bird news release from state police.

The driver, Richard T. Bird, 45, of Marion was charged with possession and

intent to deliver. Bird was transported to the Grundy County Jail, where he later posted bond. According to judici.com, Bird pleaded not guilty in court at the Grundy County Courthouse on Wednesday.

Narcotics are being transported on Illinois interstates every day, according to the release.

“This arrest demonstrates the ISP’s continued

commitment to its criminal patrol efforts,” said District 5 Commander Randy Ness, in the release. “Seizures of this magnitude significantly cut into the pipeline that is bringing large quantities of dangerous drugs to our communities. These troopers did an exceptional job of intercepting illicit narcotics, and their training and good police work prevented the drugs from going any further.”

Almer; one sister, Wilma Orlowski of Northfield, OH; sister-in-law, Marge Leskovich of Lexington, OH; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Francis (Kolenc) Leskovich; and brother, John Leskovich.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, located at 516 E. Jackson Street in Morris. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, November 17, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at

the church with Father Edward J. Howe, CR as Presider. Burial will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

Preferred memorials may be made in Barbara’s name to Immaculate Conception Church and to Morris Hospital Auxiliary Fund.

Morris High School students win excellence awards at Joliet Junior College

nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Students at Morris Community High School rushed to their seats Thursday morning to begin sculpting masterpieces out of stone clay during their ceramics class.

Five of those students, including Alexis Halcomb, Bulmaro Ochoa, Karys Olsen, Kristina Passow and Tyler Pletsch, recently entered their clay pieces in the Joliet Junior College Area High School Art Exhibition.

Ochoa’s clay piece, called “Endangered,” won an Award of Excellence and Pletsch’s piece, called “A Leafy Teapot,” also won an Award of Excellence.

“I took the time and effort into making it. I really enjoyed how it turned out,” Pletsch, a senior, said of “A Leafy Teapot,” which has rose petals decorated around the entire piece. “It’s exciting to know I’m not the only one who likes it. It’s more of a privilege to display it.”

Pletsch said he will receive the excellence award Thursday. His “A Leafy Teapot” piece also won first place in the Grundy County Corn Fest Art Show.

“I saw some of the pieces there and they were really good,” Ochoa said. “That makes me feel great and motivates me to do better.”

“I’m always anxious to see what’s the latest and greatest in ceramics we’ll see from Morris.

It’s really stellar and outstanding work,” Milosevich said.

Halcomb, a senior, has a piece in the show that raises awareness on human traffick-

ing. Her piece is called “Broken,” and is a hand covering a face, both made out of clay.

A tattoo on the arm says “Broken.”

Halcomb said the piece represents the pain human trafficking has on its victims.

The face and the hand were placed in a cage with roses on the outside. Dead roses and a broken mask were placed on the inside of the cage.

Halcomb said the roses on the outside of the cage represent hope, the cage represents that the victims are trapped and the dead roses on the inside of the cage show how hope is dead after victims are forced into human trafficking.

She added the broken mask on the inside to represent the mental state of victims once they’re involved in human trafficking.

Goose Lake garage fire causes $25,000 in damage

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GOOSE LAKE – The Coal City Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire at 2000 N. Island Drive in Goose Lake on Wednesday night just before 10 p.m.

“Firefighters arriving on the scene saw flames from the roof of a large garage,” said Lt. Nick Doerfler, Coal City Fire Protection District public information officer.

A news release said that because of a heavy amount of fire, an exterior attack was initiated

along with protecting surrounding buildings from further damage.

“They did a good job keeping it to the original structure,” Doerfler said. “They kept it from spreading to a nearby shed and the house.”

Mutual aid was called to assist because of the size of the fire as well as a need for more water at the scene to assist in putting it out.

Doerfler said the fire was investigated by the MABAS 15 fire investigators and no cause was determined.

The fire caused more than

“Fire companies did a great job extinguishing this difficult blaze due to limited water supply at the scene,” said Fire Chief James Sheldon. “Thankfully no injuries were reported.”

The line would pipe wind energy from Iowa to Grundy County, where the energy could be converted into alternate current electricity and injected into the power grid, servicing Chicago and the East Coast.

Before reaching the station, the transmission line would cut through numerous Illinois

and Iowa farms, including some within Grundy County.

The fate of the $2 billion project rests with the ICC. According to the ICC office, the vote was held off to provide more time to review.

Numerous landowners, organizations such as the Illinois Farm Bureau and politicians including state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, have spoken publicly in opposition to the

project because of the effect on farm land.

Grundy County’s role is tied to the converter station, which will be located in Channahon if approved. On Monday, the Grundy County Board approved a tax abatement for the project, following the village of Channahon, Morris Community High School District and the Saratoga Grade School District.

Morris school board ‘Every life deserves a chance’ OKs tentative tax levy Donations needed for Morris woman’s dog’s cancer treatments

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris homeowners will likely pay close to the same amount in property taxes as they did last year to Morris Community High School this year.

The MCHS District 101 Board approved the tentative tax levy, 5-0, with Eric Monson and Thomas Anderson absent during the board’s regular meeting Monday.

The proposed tax rate for levy 2014, which is for school year 2015-16, is $1.88 for every $100 of property owned.

“We’ve kept the tax rate between $1.85 to $1.89 for the past five years,” Superintendent Pat Halloran said Thursday.

School districts file tax levies to make sure they capture all available property tax dollars once the actual equalized assessed value, or property value, is determined. School district budgets are primarily based on local property taxes.

The district is levying based on the 2014 estimated assessed value of $413,890,355, according to the levy worksheet given to the school board. These numbers still are an estimate until the levy is approved in December.

Halloran said the district has cut its workforce by two fulltime teachers, contained health insurance costs, and had a contract settlement with the teachers that has a salary amount and schedule the district can afford in the long run. These things have improved the outlook of the school finances, he said.

MORRIS – Ollie, the 9-yearold cavalier king charles spaniel belonging to Bonnie Camacho of Morris, never gave his owner a clue he was sick.

It was his groomer who spotted the swollen glands beneath his neck last month, Camacho said, the day she took Ollie for a hair and nail trim. The groomer suggested Ollie get checked out. Camacho, a registered nurse at Sheridan Correctional Center, agreed.

Within a week, Camacho learned Ollie had lymphoma – cancer of the lymphatic system – and was sent to VCA Aurora Animal Hospital, Camacho said. An oncologist laid out three options – do nothing, treat with steroid medication or initiate chemotherapy.

Although the last option was expensive, Camacho agreed without hesitation. No

“He’s my baby,” Camacho said. “I have no children. He is my child. ... Hopefully he will be with me a very long time.”

Knowing Ollie’s chemotherapy treatments were beyond her budget, Camacho searched for organizations that might help her and found Magic Bullet Fund. Camacho said lymphoma is rare in cavaliers.

They more commonly suffer from heart ailments, a concern when undergoing chemother-

apy, as Ollie does have a heart murmur. Ollie does not take any medication for it and a recent EKG was normal, Camacho said.

Still, Camacho keeps a close watch on him, especially for chemotherapy related side-effects, such as lethargy, loss of appetite, nausea and diarrhea. So far, Ollie has completed four of his 12 weekly to bi-weekly treatments and is tolerating his cancer regime well.

She added the art pieces were judged by art faculty at JJC. “It’s a very difficult feat at this level because there’s high quality work there. I’m so proud,” she said. “The level of talent you see from all high

schools – they’re literally bringing their best.”

Hankins said it’s difficult for a student to stick to an elective for four years and ceramics students are dedicated to their art.

“These kids have been together for four years. They challenge and stimulate each other,” Hankins said. “It’s recognized outside of the high school. When other people recognize their talent, it justifies the pride I take in them.”

The art exhibition at Joliet Junior College runs until Nov. 26, and then from Dec. 1 to 12, will be in the Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery at the college.

2014 is the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of the first World War. People all over the world have been buying little ceramic poppies to “plant” outside the Tower of London.

The goal is to “plant” one for every British or Commonwealth soldier killed in World War I.

Then look for photos of modern military uniforms in the newspaper or online. What is similar? What is diferent?

Hawks escape with home-court victory

MORRIS – When two basketball rivals meet up on the court, you can usually expect a hard-fought game. When those two rivals are schools in the same town, the intensity ramps up a bit.

Such was the case Thursday night, when Shabbona’s eighth-grade boys basketball team met Saratoga in the Hawks’ William R. Farmer Gymnasium. Saratoga thrilled the home crowd by rallying from a 20-11 halftime deficit to claim a 30-27 victory.

It was a change on defense that fueled the Saratoga rally, as the Hawks (2-2) outscored Shabbona, 12-2, in the third quarter to take a 23-22 lead into the fourth.

“We played a 1-2-2 zone,” Saratoga coach Vince Zomboracz said. “We picked things up intensitywise in the second half. We also put our power forward, Jacob Overbeck, at the top of the zone to make it tougher on their guards.

We also put Chatten Dryfhout underneath. He’s not real big, but he has a lot of heart and works hard on boxing out and he was able to get some fouls called on them going over the back of him.”

Indeed, for most of the second half, the Shabbona twin towers of post players Austin Hatcher and Ryan Lain spent time on the bench with foul trouble. With the Braves’ two main scoring threats on the bench, the Hawks chipped away at the lead.

Ethan Heap scored the first five points of the third quarter for Saratoga, then Patrick McCabe hit a basket and, later, a free throw.

Dryfhout hit a basket to tie the score with 1:26 to play in the third quarter. With 1 minute left, Shabbona’s Tyler Petty scored the Braves’ first basket of the second half to give them a 22-20 lead. But, at the buzzer, Overbeck drained a 3-pointer to put Saratoga

The first item is something almost every angler has heard about, but might not have decided to buy. It is called an umbrella rig. Basically, it is a fishing method that allows for an angler to present multiple lures in a manner that resembles a school of baitfish. The rig consists of several wires fanning out like the ribs of an umbrella.

At the end of these wires, a soft-bodied lure is rigged that mimics a shad or other forage fish. When the rig is brought through the water it is amazing how realistic all those swimming baits look. It can drive the fish crazy. In fact, there are some tournaments trails that have banned the use of the umbrella rig.

In Illinois, people who use an umbrella rig need to know that state law limits the number of hooks on a single line to only two. If you use an

umbrella rig in Illinois, you can only have two of the soft lures with hooks in them, the others can be rigged to swim, just without the hooks.

Many anglers I know have not yet tried the umbrella rig because it can be a little pricey to originally set up. The wire frame can run anywhere from $10 to $30. Then, by the time you add the soft plastic baits, you might add another $5 to $10. No, it is not an outrageously priced Christmas present, but I’ve seen lots of frugal fishermen pass it up and buy less expensive lures.

I’m sure they would appreciate it as a thoughtful gift.

The other item that special someone in your family might really enjoy is the GoPro Sportsman Mount. This is an accessory that can help mount your GoPro camera to a fishing rod, shotgun or bow.

This camera attachment runs about $70 and is available online as well as in your typical big-box chain stores.

A new first lady for in this state For the first time in 6 years, Illinois will have a first lady after the new governor is inaugurated in January. Good luck to Diana Rauner in her new role.

Illinois hasn’t had a first lady for nearly 6 years, since Patti Blagojevich, wife of the impeached and convicted Rod Blagojevich, left the position.

Because Gov. Pat Quinn is divorced, the state has had no first lady since he became governor in January 2009.

But in January 2015, when Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner takes office, his wife, Diana, will assume the mantle.

(By the way, when Illinois elects its first woman governor, what will we call her spouse?)

In recent years, first ladies have assisted their husbands in various ways.

From 2003 to 2009, Patti Blagojevich fought illiteracy, supported eyesight programs for children and favored the planting of greenery native to Illinois along public thoroughfares.

From 1999 to 2003, Lura Lynn Ryan assisted her husband, George, in the areas of organ donation, drug and alcohol abuse programs, the arts and historic preservation.

From 1991 to 1999, Brenda Edgar promoted adoption and issues regarding children and women during husband Jim’s tenure.

From 1977 to 1991, Jayne Thompson cochaired the Governor’s Task Force on Day Care and performed other duties in support of her husband, James “Big Jim” Thompson, the state’s longest-serving governor.

Diana Rauner, who holds a doctorate in developmental psychology and a master’s degree in business administration, is executive director of the Ounce of Prevention Fund in the Chicago area, according to BusinessWeek.com.

Along with educational philanthropy, she has been involved with public agencies and private foundations and also worked in investment banking.

Diana Rauner sounds like a busy person.

As Election Day approached, Mrs. Rauner accompanied her husband more often at campaign events and appeared in a TV ad, thus prompting our curiosity about her future role and its potential impact on Illinoisans.

Whatever she chooses to do as Illinois’ new first lady, we wish her the best of luck.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Two clashing orthodox views of the past, future When two global religious leaders embrace one another, someone is sure to turn the encounter into a photo opportunity.

The photo-op on Nov. 7 was symbolic and historic. The elder statesman was the Rev. Billy Graham, and rather than an evangelical superstar, the man who met with him at his North Carolina mountain home was Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev. This visit was linked to a Hilarion address to a Charlotte gathering of Protestant and Orthodox leaders, organized by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

After generations of work with organizations such as the Episcopal Church and the World Council of Churches, the archbishop said many Orthodox leaders now realize – on issues of sex, marriage, family life and moral theology – some of their ecumenical partners will be found in evangelical pulpits and pews.

“In today’s pluralistic world, the processes of liberalization have swept over some Christian communities.

Many churches have diverted from biblical teaching ... even if this attitude is not endorsed by the majority of these communities’ members,” said Hilarion, who is the Moscow Patriarchate’s chief ecumenical officer.

The most pressing current issue is the blessing of same-sex unions, which clashes with centuries of Christian tradition on marriage. The

VIEWS Terry Mattingly Orthodox cannot compromise on this point of doctrine, he stressed.

“The church has always been called to proclaim the truth of Christ and condemn sin, even in defiance of the demands of the society and ‘the powers that be.’ ... How little does this resemble the discourse of today’s liberal Christians who seek to adapt the church to the standards of this world, to make it tolerant, not toward people, not toward sinners, but toward sin.”

Ironically, Hilarion’s visit to the United States was during a semipublic debate about this very issue, on a youth-ministry website operated by the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), which has Russian roots.

At the center of the storm was an essay entitled “Never Changing Gospel; Ever Changing Culture” by Father Robert Arida. He serves as pastor of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral in Boston, which has been praised on the Facebook page of the “Pro-Gay Orthodox Christians” network.

“While the past cannot be ignored, it also cannot be the only point of reference for the Orthodox Christian,” wrote Arida. If church leaders

do not acknowledge “that the Holy Spirit continues to work here, now and in the future, the past will easily be transformed into an oppressive tyrant.”

It’s especially important, he stressed, for Orthodox leaders not to be swayed by the views of converts to Orthodoxy, particularly evangelical Protestants.

After fierce online debate and “consultation” with fellow OCA bishops, Metropolitan Tikhon Mollard publicly confirmed that he requested the Arida essay be taken down, along with the online comments appended to it by numerous priests and laypeople.

During his North Carolina address, Hilarion stressed there must be more to ecumenism between evangelicals and the Orthodox than one or two issues, mentioning global threats to social justice and religious freedom – especially among the persecuted churches in the Middle East.

The goal, he said, is for churches to welcome the lost, while refusing to compromise on doctrines defended through the ages – including sexual ethics.

New statin guidelines recognize their expanding benefits Dear Doctor K: My doctor never recommended statins to me, but he says there are new guidelines, and thinks that I should now start taking one.

What do you think of the new statin guidelines?

Dear Reader: The new guidelines make a lot of sense, because we’ve learned that statins have more effects on the body than just lowering cholesterol.

Statins were developed after a Nobel Prize-winning discovery in the 1970s revealed how the body makes cholesterol.

Most of the cholesterol in our body is made by our body, not consumed in our food. Statins slow the production of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by the body.

In the 1980s, studies showed

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff that statins dramatically lowered blood levels of LDL cholesterol and also lowered the risk of heart attack. At first, we assumed that the lower risk of heart attack was entirely explained by the lower cholesterol. That’s because we knew that people with high LDL cholesterol in their blood had higher rates of heart attack.

But then a large study conducted at Harvard Medical School found that statins profoundly lower the risk of heart attack, even in people with

normal total and LDL cholesterol levels.

That’s because statins do more than just lower cholesterol. Heart attacks occur when cholesterol-filled plaques in the heart’s arteries rupture, causing a clot that blocks blood from getting to the heart. Inflammation inside the plaques causes them to rupture – and statins reduce inflammation.

This realization changed the way doctors think about statins. If statins lower the risk of heart attack even in people with normal cholesterol levels, then we should give them to people at high risk for heart attack – regardless of their cholesterol level.

The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Amer-

ican College of Cardiology issued new statin-prescribing guidelines in November 2013.

Until then, doctors prescribed statins to reach specific cholesterol goals or targets. Instead, the new guidelines ask doctors to prescribe statins based on a patient’s overall heart and artery disease risk.

Specifically, the new guidelines recommend that patients in any of the following groups be treated with a statin: • People who already have heart or artery disease; • People with very high levels of LDL cholesterol (190 mg/dL or higher); • Anyone between the ages of 40 and 75 who has Type 2 diabetes; • Adults aged 40 to 75 years

who have a heart disease or stroke risk of 7.5 percent or greater in the next 10 years.
