Sherwin-Williams presents Route 47 location plans

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There isn’t much open land in Morris along Route 47 south of Interstate 80, but it appears Sherwin-Williams has found some it is interested in.

The Fortune 500 building materials company, probably best known for its paint, is looking to build a 4,000-squarefoot store at 1771 N. Division St. The piece of land the company is hoping to build on is an empty and grassy lot between First National Bank of Ottawa and Archway Shopping Plaza.

Kevin Vernick of MEV Morris LLC, the developer of the project, presented site plans Thursday morning to the Morris Development Review Committee.

The committee voted, 6-0, to require that specific dimensions of exterior brickwork and property easements be presented at a future meeting.

The site plan was not yet approved.

Morris City Attorney Scott Belt informed Vernick that although there isn’t a specific

amount of brick required, city code indicates new buildings should be constructed with a majority of brick materials.

The site plan submitted by Vernick showed the exterior to be about half brick, Belt said, without specific dimensions or color.

Vernick stated he was surprised it was being discussed, as he felt in prior discussions with Morris Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck they had reached agreement on the amount of brick the exterior would have.

Belt said he’d like to see specific brick elevations, which, according to code, are supposed to be consistent from building to building. Variations in exterior accents are allowed.

After discussing the site plan briefly with Belt, Cheshareck relayed the discussion point to Vernick.

“We don’t doubt the design is done in good faith, but if we approve something, we just want to make sure it’s legal,” Cheshareck said.

Sherwin-Williams is hoping to open the store in 2016, Vernick said, and there is

enough land available for an add-on to the project.

A second business could either be connected to the building or separate – perhaps allowing room for a drive-thru type of arrangement – according to Vernick and the site plans.

Cheshareck said he was a bit concerned about having a portion of the parking available behind the building in order to meet the requirement of one stall per 200-square-foot of retail space. Vernick said it’s designed that way because retailers value being as close to the roadway as possible.

The depth of the lot, from what would be the entrance along Route 47 to the rear of the property line, is significantly more than the amount of frontage existing along Route 47.

Vernick said customers who park behind the building will be able to use a sidewalk on the north side of the building to enter at the front door.

Pete Iosue of Teska Associates, the city’s planning firm, said the proposed landscaping, lighting and circulation fit the property.

Youth art event at Morris YMCA heralds beginning of winter programming

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Kids’ activities are moving inside with the chill in the air, and to add to indoor activity options, the Morris YMCA has begun offering youth art programs.

The first series was held earlier in the fall, and the second is going on now with “Awesome Artists.” In the works for spring are weekend art classes, and summer art camps also are in being planned.

The YMCA is about more than working out and sports, the nonprofit wants the community know.

“We want to offer more art because kids are kind of getting away from art,” said Sarah Porzel, family and community engagement director at the Morris YMCA. “With these classes, we get them unplugged and let their imaginations go wild.”

Angela Vlk Robinson, an art teacher at Thompson Junior High School in Oswego, teaches the art classes. She knows the community well, having taught previously at White Oak Elementary and at the independent Creative Arts Center.

Her earlier fall YMCA art class had kids from kindergarten through eighth grade, she said, and projects were determined based on the children’s interests and ages. The eighthgrade boy, she said, was interested in learning graffiti, which was supposed to be its own class, but was combined with the other classes because of enrollment numbers.

The class also did cartooning.

When Robinson asked the current group what they were interested in pursuing, they told her superheroes and cartooning.

“They created their own superheroes,” she said Tuesday. “Then last week, they lay down on long pieces of white

Grundy Bank launches holiday lights contest Judging to take place Dec. 13 through 20

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – If you think you have the best Christmas lights in Morris, now is your chance to be crowned Grundy Bank’s “Best Home for the Holidays.”

Grundy Bank announced this week it will hold its first contest this holiday season, after Commercial Banking Officer and Marketing Coordinator J.R. Hock said she was inspired by several things.

“My kids and I have watched the ‘Great Christmas Light Fight’ on ABC the last couple of years and love the show,” she said. “Last year, I was thinking how great it would be for our community to have one. I remember as a kid driving around with my parents looking at Christmas

lights, and it’s a tradition I still love.”

She introduced the idea to Grundy Bank President Kevin Olson, who was on board.

She then talked to Morris Downtown Development Partnership Executive Director Julie Applegate to see if the bank could sponsor it as part of the “Home for the Holidays” series.

While it was a bit too late to add to this year’s schedule, Hock said both groups are hoping the contest becomes a part of future installments.

“I’m hoping we get enough contestants and that this is something that will take off and grow in our community,” Hock said. “Part of our culture at Grundy Bank is being involved in our community.

We live here and work here just like our clients, so it matters to us.”

Theatre Guild presents ‘The Altos: Like the Sopranos only Lower’

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The public is invited to attend the wake of Tony Alto. They simply ask that visitors please check their weapons at the door.

Annie Kowalczyk is directing the interactive musical comedy mystery spoof, which is a takeoff on the HBO series “The Sopranos.”

“Anyone who liked watching ‘The Sopranos’ will like this play,” she said.

Being a fan of the series isn’t required to enjoy the interactive event where the audience becomes part of the show.

Those who attend will be given a new name – kind of like witness protection – and get to be that character throughout the production. Men will be given gangster names while the female guests will be given stripper names – after all, the dearly departed did run a strip

club or two.

“Late ’80s and early ’90s is making a comeback on theater stages,” Kowalczyk said. “It’s a good throwback to that era.”

The mystery comes in when guests at the show try to figure out which cast member tried to off the crime boss, placing a bomb in his car at a hotel.

At the end of the show, the audience will vote on who they think killed Tony and why.

If anyone guesses the right person, they will be entered into a drawing to receive a prize.

The prize, however, is top secret.

Bill Griffith of Plainfield stars in this production as Tony Alto, and it’s unlike any part he’s portrayed on the Morris Theatre Guild stage.

“It’s a little more frightening,” he said. “There is so much potential to vary from the script.”

When he walks, he moonwalks backward. Nothing too extraordinary because he is, after all, a dork, Caius said.

Caius’ brother, David, a second-grader, was hard at work on his superhero, Super Spider Poop.

“He’s basically a cousin to Spider Man,” David said, “and he can throw a web.”

David was using bright blue, red and black for his character.

He said he liked the class.

“Art just makes me happy,” he said.

“It fills your mind with color,” Caius said, “and it makes you more creative and more so-

Motorhead drummer Phil ‘Philthy Animal’ Taylor dies at 61 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – Heavy metal band Motorhead said former drummer Phil Taylor, an iconic metal thrasher nicknamed “Philthy Animal,” has died.

He was 61.

“Fast” Eddie Clarke, guitarist with the Grammy-winning rockers, said on Facebook that Taylor died late Wednesday.

He didn’t disclose a cause of death, saying Thursday that Taylor “had been ill for some time but that does not make it any easier when the time finally comes.”

He said Taylor was “one [heck] of a character.”

Taylor drummed on Motorhead’s best-known albums, including “Overkill,” ‘’Bomber,” “Ace of Spades” and the live recording “No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith.”

His distinctive double bass-drum style on tracks such as “Overkill” helped define a new genre – thrash metal.

On Motorhead’s Facebook page, the band paid tribute to “Lil’ Philthy ... he who fuelled many a young boy’s punk/metal hairstyles ... he who played the drums with fury and intent.”

Ozzy Osbourne called his death a “terrible, terrible loss.”

Taylor left the band in 1984, rejoined in 1987 and left again in 1992.

Dozens of Ingress players from the Chicago area met Saturday in Joliet

By “portals,” Bitters means items such as landmarks, statues and murals, that Niantic – developer of the cellphone-based game Ingress – might deem interesting. For game purposes, Bitters belongs to the enlightened green team, which is battling the resisting blue team.

On Saturday, dozens of gamers – wearing either blue or green name tags – met about noon at the Will Country Courthouse in Joliet to socialize and to introduce Ingress to newbies. The group then set out on foot to collectively gain as many points and advance as many levels as possible, said Dan Bailey of DeKalb, an avid Ingress player and another green team member.

Joliet wasn’t the only location for such an event. Similar meet-ups are held the first Saturday of the month in various places around the globe, Bailey said.

One of those present Saturday in Joliet was Eddie Moya of Chicago, a member of the blue team who began playing Ingress about 18 months ago and has even attended anomalies – large gaming events officiated

by Ingress developers – in other parts of the country.

Because Ingress only has two teams, members hail from all over the world, Bailey said.

Monthly gatherings put faces on the players. After the game, everyone agrees on a local restaurant for a communal lunch, he added.

“It’s a friendly competition,” Bailey said. “We record the scores before we start. In two hours, we check back in and record scores again.”

Both teams are interested in “exotic matter” or “XM,” an “energy” that enhances people’s abilities, Bailey said. This exotic matter is concentrated mostly in artistic and cultural

Since no one understands this energy, the blue team – concerned of devastating side effects – works to protect mankind, while the green team – convinced of the energy’s benefits – wants to increase its availability.

In order to claim portals and build virtual territories, players find and physically interact – within 40 meters – of interesting objects, Bailey said.

When people find one that’s unclaimed, they take a picture and submit it to Niantic for approval, he added.

Ingress is generally played

as a solitary game – although entire families, especially if kids are involved — will play together, Bailey said. It’s impossible to move up to high levels unless groups of eight or more work together, he added.

For instance, Bitters, who attended the event in Joliet, plays Ingress with her significant other, Nik Macholz of Rockdale and they both introduced the game to his son, Eddie Macholz, 12.

“We were bringing him with us,” Bitters said, “so he might as well play.”

Tammie Hardrick of Joliet travels for business, so Ingress provides opportunities to explore little-known features of unfamiliar towns.

Bob Perschau of New Lenox is on the blue team with his adult son Zacharoid Perschau, as is Christine Teeling of Joliet, who joined the team when she began dating Zacharoid and attended the meet-up with them.

“Blue is my favorite color,” Teeling said as explanation for her team choice. “And it would have been weird in the relationship to be rivals.”

Morris’ Walker stays close to home

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For the past two baseball seasons, Morris’ Matt Walker has become a familiar face on the pitcher’s mound.

Walker burst onto the local scene late in his sophomore season, when he went 4-0 in the latter stages of the regular season and in the postseason, helping lead Morris to a Class 3A regional championship by throwing a shutout against LaSalle-Peru in the title game.

Last season, he was the ace of the Morris staff, going up against the opposition’s best nearly every time out. He went 4-10 with a 3.60 ERA and struck out 91 in 72 innings while walking just 27.

On Tuesday, the left-handed pitcher made a decision to join some other familiar faces when he signed to play his college baseball with Illinois State University. There, he will join former Morris teammate Tom Cheshareck, along with Minooka grads Mitch Vogrin and Tyler Paulson and current high school seniors Joe Butler (Minooka) and Brent Headrick (Reed-Custer).

“I’ve been playing with

Tom Cheshareck since I was 12,” Walker said. “And Brent Headrick was on my team when I was 12 and 13. He is actually going to be my roommate when we get down there.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing some familiar faces when I get there.”

The proximity to Bloomington-Normal also played a big part in Walker’s decision, as did the fact that the decision-making process is over before the season starts. He chose ISU over an offer made

by Central Michigan. He also visited University of Cincinnati and Miami (Ohio) with a visit scheduled to Ball State University had he not committed to ISU. “It’s nice to have that load off my mind,” he said. “Now, I don’t have any of those things to think about this spring. I can just go out and play. I would say the location was probably the biggest factor. I know my parents [Dave and Dina] want to be able to come see me play, and now they won’t have to drive three hours or more.”

Watching Walker pitch is worth a three-hour drive.

It’s that quality that Morris coach Todd Kein believes will serve him well at the next level.

“I think Illinois State is a great fit for Matt,” Kein said.

“They are going to be really happy they jumped on him early. They like to use their lefties out of the bullpen, but I believe he has a chance to be a very good starter there.

He gets stronger as the game goes on, and he is very refined already. He can get guys out with all of his pitches.

“I am very happy for Matt that he has made this

decision already. With any player we have ever had go through this, the main thing is that they enjoy their senior year. Now, he can do that. He’s still going to be very competitive every time he is on the mound, because that’s just how he’s built. He just doesn’t have it in him to coast, and he will continue to work hard and improve every time out.

“His demeanor on the mound and his command are his strong points. He doesn’t get down if things aren’t going great. He just keeps battling and keeps us in the game. He has had the benefit of having a lot of experience around him the last two years. This year, he is the one with the experience. The guys are going to look to him as their leader, and I look forward to seeing him take that opportunity.” adno=0344777

The time has come: prepare yourself for shotgun season Each year is marked by big dates on the calendar. Birthdays and anniversaries take up some important space. The beginning and the end of the school year are other landmarks. Outdoors folks have days they relish, as well. We have one such date approaching. Have you guessed it yet?

It would be the first shotgun season for deer.

In Illinois, the weekends before and after Thanksgiving reigns as the highlight for many whitetail enthusiasts.

Avid shotgun hunters are no doubt already preparing for the big day.

I’ve talked to several youngsters who are so excited about spending time in the woods with dads and grandads they can hardly contain themselves.

We have lost the custom in northern Illinois, but in many areas of the country, the classroom will be quite barren come opening morning. Empty desks mean the woods will be choked with blaze orange.

For many, this rite of passage comes in the form of deer camp. These testosterone filled getaways are the things of legend. Many a hunter comes back from deer camp full of stories and camaraderie, even if no whitetails are bagged. One deer camp closes and thoughts of the next year already fill their minds.

When I first started hunt-

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers ing, I was a little perplexed by the overwhelming enthusiasm for shotgun deer season.

Then I realized I cut my teeth chasing whitetails with a bow.

A bowhunter in Illinois enjoys a long season. If a person can’t make it out one morning, no big deal. There are a lot more mornings coming up.

That is not the case for the shotgun hunter. The first weekend starts on a Friday and ends on Sunday evening.

The weekend after Thanksgiving starts Thursday and ends at dusk Sunday. If you only chase deer with a shotgun, your available times to hunt are severely limited. Knowing this, I fully understand why die-hard shotgun hunters clear their schedules of all other activities.

With so little time, it makes sense to do as much preparation before opening morning as humanly possible. This starts with digging through bins of camo clothes and finding that lost glove, your favorite hat and those darn socks that keep vanishing.

It also is time to search for all the accessories that make the difference between a good outing and a bad one. Yes,

that flashlight needs batteries.

And while you’re at it, the rangefinder probably does as well. If you are like me, the hunting knife could use a good touching up. Not to mention, hoist ropes, gutting gloves and all licenses and permits need to be put in the proper place.

The list seems long and it is overwhelming if left to the night before. Start getting it knocked out now so you can get a good night’s rest before that alarm clock goes off. The last thing that always runs through the back of my mind during shotgun season is safety. The woods will have many more hunters in it than during bow season. If you hunt public land, you might even see some quite congested days.

Be courteous to your fellow sportsmen, take care with your scent trail, and respect each other’s space and the shotgun deer seasons can be a great experience for everyone.

Dream of opening morning with anticipation. Get excited.

Talk about the hunts with friends and family. Pass on the love of the sport to someone who never has gone before.

Traditions are the things that we most look forward to.

In Illinois, one of those traditions starts soon.

Chicago, St. Louis differ on drafting backs

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – When two of the NFL’s more run-committed clubs, the Bears and Rams, meet Sunday, it’ll represent an interesting juxtaposition of how they’ve chosen to commit to the run.

The Rams spent the 10th overall pick on Todd Gurley, already in the conversation of the NFL’s best backs. Meanwhile, the Bears used just a fourth-round pick on Jeremy Langford, the potential heir to Matt Forte. Forte ranks second

in most of the Bears’ all-time rushing categories as a former second-round pick.

Unlike Gurley, Melvin Gordon – the other back chosen in the 2015 first round, whom the Bears shut down to 31 yards on 11 carries Monday night – has stumbled out of the NFL gate.

It’s way too premature to think Gordon will fade away like Trent Richardson or Donald Brown, just as it’s too soon to proclaim Langford is the next mid-round hit like Jamaal Charles (third round) or, most recently, Devonta Freeman (sixth).

Gase and Fox have recently coaxed impressive results from mid-round and undrafted backs alike. Aside from Langford’s successful debut, Gase was widely lauded for transforming the Denver offense late last season behind C.J. Anderson, an undrafted rookie in 2013, and Ronnie Hillman – whom the Broncos spent a third-round pick on in the same draft.

Langford admitted it was nice hearing he “fell” to the Bears, but he hasn’t put much stock in competing against the two first-round backs the past two weeks.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Morris should address skunk problem

To the Editor: I was sorry to see that neither the county nor the city will do anything about the skunk population in Morris.

I have lived in the same house on East Jefferson Street for 49 years and have never had a skunk problem like this year. I have a small, fenced backyard, and my dog got sprayed.

I called animal control and they said they were only contracted to take care of dogs in Morris.

They did give me the name of someone who could trap skunks; three skunks and $325 later, my dog got sprayed a second time!

The county is only contracted to take care of stray dogs. Hello, don’t know about the county, but most dogs running loose in Morris are not true strays, but dogs that have gotten away from their owners or home.

If the county will not address the skunk issue, how about the city contracting someone who can? Or, for those of us taking the responsibility of hiring someone ourselves, maybe a reimbursement.

Morris does have a skunk problem, at least the east side does. What will it take – a child to be sprayed or worse yet, bitten?

Will meeting between governor, four leaders bear fruit?

The concept of a public meeting Nov. 18 by the four legislative leaders and the governor sounds nice, but will it actually move the ball forward and break the months-long governmental impasse?

As you probably know, a group of good-government types recently called on the state’s leaders to sit down and talk about solving the state’s budget issues. The four tops and the governor haven’t met as a group since late May. House Speaker Michael Madigan quickly accepted and then suggested the meeting be held in public. The move has quite a few people scratching their heads because nobody expects anything will be solved while the public is looking on.

So, why bother?

A big reason is the Democrats want the public to see what they’ve been seeing with their own eyes for months. The governor walks in, they say, exchanges pleasantries, then repeats the same basic talking points he’s been making since April.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Top Democratic sources said Rauner cannot talk in detail about much of his Turnaround Agenda. They’ve asked relatively uncomplicated questions about tort reform, for example, and claim they’ve been met with empty stares.

“They can prep [Rauner] on the budget for the next month, and it won’t do any good,” fretted a top Republican shortly after Madigan suggested a public meeting.

It’s not that the governor isn’t bright. He is a very smart man. It’s just that he never has been a detail guy. And a big part of the problem with these negotiations is many of the topics are nothing but details.

Even the far more experienced Madigan might be able to delve down only a couple of levels into the workers’ comp issue, but he doesn’t have the expertise to go much deeper than that, Democrats admit.

What they need to do is set up some expert committees and let them deal with the details. But the experts can’t do that until the tops give them

VIEWS Rich Miller some sort of direction, and everybody is just floundering right now.

Anyway, back to the upcoming meeting.

Rauner did his level best the other day to once again tamp down expectations ahead of the meeting. “I don’t think it’s going to matter much,” the governor said, noting correctly that people don’t like to compromise in front of cameras.

Rauner and his legislative allies have been insisting the governor be allowed to set the agenda, which has some of the good-government reformers who initially proposed the sit-down worried that Rauner would attempt to hijack the meeting and insist on talking only about his Turnaround Agenda, which he wants resolved before he will negotiate the budget. The agenda includes some harshly

anti-union proposals on collective bargaining, as well as some unacceptable (to Democrats and unions) changes in the workers’ compensation program and things such as term limits and redistricting reform. But Rauner also said something last week which went almost completely unnoticed. He told reporters he was planning a “comprehensive agenda” for the meeting.

“We will include structural reform in the agenda,” Rauner said (predictably, since that’s code for his Turnaround stuff), and then said, “We will include revenue and taxes on the agenda, we’ll include spending levels on the agenda.”

The idea may be to put the Democrats on the spot and finally make them talk about what taxes they want to raise.

Madigan reiterated his support for new revenues recently in Chicago. “The No. 1 problem facing the government of the state of Illinois is the state budget deficit,” he said for the millionth time, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Which means that we have to get together to talk, negotiate, do some cuts and do some new revenue. There should be a balanced approach.”

Madigan, however, never has said specifically what “new revenue” he actually would back, and neither has his fellow Democrat, Senate President John Cullerton.

The governor’s people have been quietly pointing out this glaring omission for the past several days. Rauner told top Democrats during a private meeting months ago he would be willing to raise the income tax to 4.75 percent, which is a percentage point higher than its current level, if he got what he wanted on the Turnaround Agenda. The Democrats have not yet accepted that proposal and apparently have been waiting for the governor to make his offer public.

I doubt anything gets done, but it might be fun to watch.

Here is another deal, like yesterday’s, that revolved around a key entry – a gate into declarer’s hand. South was in four hearts. West led the club ace and continued with the club king.

What should declarer have done?

This type of auction always leaves one side feeling very uncomfortable.

West could have passed out one spade, but the next moment his opponents have roared into game. However, West had a normal balancing one-no-trump overcall, which showed 11-14 points.

After North doubled to indicate his extra strength, the rest of the auction was natural.

South was threatened with losing four tricks: two spades, one heart and one club. Although the heart finesse rated to be working, the lack of an immediate hand entry persuaded declarer to sacrifice a trick in that suit. He ruffed the second club with dummy’s heart nine and led the heart five to his eight. West won and played his third club, but declarer ruffed with the heart ace, drew trumps ending in his hand, and led a spade. After West played low smoothly, did South call for dummy’s jack or king?

As usual, counting points supplied the answer. West had already shown up with 12 points: the heart king and top three clubs. If he also held the spade ace, he would have been too strong for his balancing one-no-trump overcall. Declarer finessed dummy’s jack and claimed when East won with the ace.

Keep counting the high-card points.
