among tornado debris; owner sought

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Wilmington VFW Post 5422 is searching for a service member or the family of a service member who has lost a flag and service patches, including one with the last name Harper.

Bob Conlinson of Coal City found a flag inside a glass case, along with service badges, after the June 22 tornado.

“I found it in Coal City on Pheasant Lane in my backyard after the tornado,” Conlinson said Wednesday. “I asked my neighbors and no one knows who it belongs to.”

After searching for the owner, Conlinson dropped off the flag at the Wilmington VFW in the hopes that someone could locate the owner.

“I found stuff from as far away as St. Louis in my yard,” Conlinson said. “I thought

Inside the case is a flag that measures 3 feet by 5 feet, which Grundy County VAC Superintendent Ken Buck said would be too small for a

burial flag.

Ericksen said the VFW has received some feedback from service members who believe the patches signify the owner was an Army sergeant who saw combat; that one badge signifies the person was Army airborne; and another one is a combat infantry badge.

“It’s kind of a challenge to locate someone,” Buck said.

“Not every veteran identifies themselves as one.”

He said there are more than 3,000 veterans in Grundy County alone, and if the veteran is dead and the owners of the flag were family members, it would make them even harder to identify.

“It may not have been owned by the vet. It may be a keepsake for the family,” Buck said.

MORRIS – Freedom isn’t free.

That was one of the messages relayed Wednesday from several military veterans and supporters to a crowd gathered for a Veterans Day program on the Grundy County Courthouse lawn in Morris.

Ken Buck, commander of the Morris American Legion Post 294 and superintendent of the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission, said veterans often are first responders after active duty and more likely to vote.

“In short, they make communities better,” Buck said.

Those qualities are built through sacrifices that often go unspoken.

There have been about 83,000 military veterans missing in action since World War II, and 22 million veterans live in the U. S. – nearly 3,500 of whom live in Grundy County.

Elmo Ray Younger, of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 86, spoke to attendees and said veterans go above and beyond to defend the freedom of Americans.

Younger highlighted the story of Navy veteran Donald E. Ballard of Missouri, who jumped on a grenade in the Vietnam War with the intent of absorbing the impact and saving others.

He expected the grenade would explode – but it didn’t, and Ballard threw it back into

Seneca High holds program for Veterans Day

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com SENECA – Ramond Johnson, 92, of Joliet returned Wednesday to Seneca to meet the students of Seneca High School and take part in their annual Veterans Day program.

Johnson went to Seneca the first time in 1943 when he boarded LST 218, one of the 157 ships built during World War II at the Seneca Shipyards.

“At 18 years old, I graduated high school in May 1941,” Johnson told those gathered to honor veterans. “I was about to be drafted in the U.S. Army the following year. Instead, I decided to join the Navy.”

High winds expected Thursday in Grundy

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com High winds are in the forecast Thursday for Grundy County and the rest of northern Illinois, possibly making driving difficult at times, according to a National Weather Service advisory.

A high wind advisory began 6 p.m. Wednesday and is expected to last through 6 p.m.

Thursday. Winds will shift from southeast to westerly by Thursday morning and gusts between 40 and 50 mph are expected through the day Thursday.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera on Wednesday urged motorists to drive with caution during the morning commute by not following too closely and maintaining safe speeds.

“You also want to make sure your vehicle is road-worthy,” Rivera said, noting drivers should check tire tread and ensure tires are properly inflated.

High winds can affect stability if tire tread is worn, he said. Rivera urged drivers who are blown off the area’s interstates to call state police. If they are blown off while driving along a tollway, Rivera said to dial *999.

ComEd prepares for outages

A news release from ComEd on Wednesday stated the company is proactively increasing crew staffing and “is readying equipment to respond quickly in the event of outages.”

“We understand the impact of power outages on our customers. The ComEd team is committed to work around the clock to safely restore power interruptions as quickly as possible,” Terence R. Donnelly, executive vice president and chief operating officer with ComEd, said in the news release.

Anyone who encounters a downed power line is encouraged to call ComEd immediately at 1-800-884-7661. Never approach a downed power line and always assume the line is energized and dangerous, according to the news release.

Grundy to move forward with fewer committees

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Board members will see a restructuring of their committees effective Dec. 1 after a 10-2 vote at Tuesday night’s regular board meeting. Dick Joyce and Don Neushwander both voted against the change.

“I’ve thought about this. I think the goal is admirable,” Joyce said during the meeting.

He went on to say that while the restructure will save the county money, he feels it’s being done for the wrong reason.

Joyce said he understands that for some board members it can be a challenge to balance family, work and their position on the board, but the bigger issue was attendance at committee meetings.

“I don’t disagree with you,” Board Chairman David Welter said.

Welter said when he started on the board there were 17 com-

mittees and often a committee would meet for just 5 to 10 minutes, yet members were paid for attending. Welter said cost savings is only one reason for taking the committees from 11 to 10 and requiring fewer members on each committee.

He said the committees are having attendance issues and at times there have been problems with reaching a quorum so votes cannot be taken.

“This proposed new committee structure better aligns the interests and expertise of our board members with the committees on which they serve,” County Administrator Doug Pryor said after the meeting.

The Strategic Planning Committee has been eliminated. Welter said he originally wanted to narrow the committee structure to nine, removing the Health and Education Committee, but Legislative and VAC Committee members felt it would be better to keep that

the county a little more than $20,000. Board members are paid a per-diem for meetings they attend as well as mileage reimbursement at the federal rate of 0.575 cents a mile.

The previous structure of nine committees with seven members and two committees with five cost the county an average of $85,891 a year.

The new structure of two committees with seven members and eight committees with five will cost the county an average of $65,492 a year.

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The Grundy County Health Department will hold a flu clinic from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Grundy County Administration Building, 1320 Union St. in Morris. Medicare Part B will pay for the flu vaccine. Cost without Medicare is $50 for the high dose, $35 for the quadrivalent flu vaccine.

Adults ages 19 to 64 will receive the quadrivalent flu vaccine. The price is $35 or Medicaid will be billed. Medicaid

clients may have a co-pay that would be payable at the time of vaccine administration.

Attendees are asked to bring Medicare and Medicaid cards to the clinics. The health department can accept Mastercard, Visa, Discover or American Express credit cards or check or cash for those purchasing a flu vaccine.

For children’s vaccines, a child must be a Grundy County resident, have Medicaid, no insurance, or insurance that does not pay for the flu vaccine. A $20 donation is request-

ed, but no child who is eligible will be turned away if unable to pay. Medicaid will be billed.

Flu shots also are available by appointment for adults on Mondays and infants and children on scheduled Wednesday clinic dates. Call the health department at 815-941-3404 to make an appointment. A flu hotline also is available at 815941-6125.

BRIEFS Diabetes screening to be held at Morris Hospital

MORRIS – In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Day in Illinois, state Rep. John Anthony, R-Joliet, and Morris Hospital are jointly sponsoring a free diabetes screening for the public from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the main lobby of Morris Hospital, 50 W. High St. in Morris.

The screening consists of a finger-stick blood glucose test. A 10- to 12-hour fast is recommended, according to a news release from Anthony’s office.

Nearly 800,000 Illinoisans have diabetes, 500,000 of which are unaware they have the disease.

According to the release, nearly $7.3 billion is spent on both direct and indirect costs associated with the care of diabetes in Illinois

yearly, accounting for more than 10 percent of all health care spending.

Screenings are vital because the Centers for Disease Control estimates 40 percent of the population has diabetes and does not know it. The earlier treatment and education starts the easier it is to prevent the tragic, costly and sometimes fatal side effects of diabetes.

Corsello said more military experience translates to a stronger weave in the fabric of the country.

“It’s a relatively small group that doesn’t ask for much,” Corsello said. “Your presence today expresses gratitude.”

Corsello served more than 10 years overseas, including three combat deployments, three regular tours and an operational deployment with the United Nations. He returned to Morris after retiring from the Army.

Morris D-54 staff to attend state education conference SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Local school officials from Morris Elementary District 54 will receive guidance from education experts as well as share common concerns with other school board members and administrators in November when they attend the 2015 annual combined conference of the Illinois Association of School Boards, Illinois Association of School Administrators and Illinois Association of School Business Officials.

School finance is a major topic for many of the 108 panel sessions, according to a news release from the district. Presentations will be made on facility maintenance, labor costs, strategic planning, school mandates, referenda, bonds

and debt financing, collective bargaining, superintendent contracts and other timely financial issues.

Other topics include governance and leadership, student learning and achievement, assessments, community engagement and communications, school law, utilizing new technology and best practices.

District 54 plans to send four people to this year’s conference – Superintendent Teri Shaw, district bookkeeper Jill Mills, board member Joannie Johnston and board member Jim Hitchcock.

Shaw said the district typically sends 4 to 8 staff and board members to the conference, which annually draws more than 10,000 school leaders and guests.

“The costs to the district ranges from $3,200 to $7,500,” she said in the news release.

“While that may sound like a lot, it amounts to less than 0.03 percent of our annual budget.”

The 2015 conference, which is Nov. 20 to 22 in Chicago, also will offer in depth workshops on school board leadership, financial oversight, mandated training, a session for board presidents, as well as a two-day stretch of professional development designed specifically for board secretaries. Shaw said local representatives will make a report about what they saw, learned and did at the conference at a future board meeting.

“We want the community to know what we are doing to become more effective, responsible, and efficient,” she said.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There are a few questions about a team before the year starts, but the Morris boys basketball team might have the market cornered in that regard heading into the 2015-16 season.

That’s because the Redskins will be without almost 90 percent of their scoring players from last season.

To say Morris will be a different-looking team this season would be an understatement.

The familiar names of Austin Patterson, Evan Bjelland, Jake Walker and Griffin Sobol will be missing from the Redskins’ roster this season. Some might view that as a bad thing, but others might see it as an opportunity.

Count Morris coach Joe Blumberg in the latter group.

“The numbers that we lost to graduation are important, but more than that is the maturity, basketball IQ and knowledge of our system,” Blumberg said. “It’s exciting to have a fresh start, but the immediate impact so far has been some glaring deficiencies in those areas. That, and some inconsistencies from our summer roster to the season roster have put us even further behind than we wanted to be.”

There won’t be a complete change in the style of play for the Redskins, but the emphasis might be placed on a different area of the floor.

“One good thing about our system is that it benefits both guards and post players,” Blumberg said. “We had both Kevin Henry and Kjeld Torkelson, who were post players, each top 1,000 points for their careers in our system, and Austin Patterson, who was a guard, went over 1,000 points in the same system. This year, especially early in the season, I think our focus will have to be on the post players because that’s where we have the most experience with Jake Jurasits and Jackson Shannon returning from last year.

Fangio, Rodgers will have hands full with Rams’ threats Bears hope to contain Tavon Austin

As Niners defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio played him four times. Austin dazzled the Bears as a 2013 rookie, faking an end-around before reversing direction and exploding untouched downfield on a 65-yard touchdown run.

He added a 32-yard grab that November afternoon, when the Rams ran the Bears out of Edward Jones Dome, 42-21.

Heck, Marc Trestman took a page out of Brian Schottenheimer’s book of Austin gadget plays at Soldier Field on a similar Alshon Jeffery touchdown last season.

Todd Gurley will grab a lot of the headlines this week after getting off to the best start in NFL history among running backs. But the triple-threat Austin leads the league in yards per carry (8.3) among players with at least 10 rushes, and is tied for second in all-purpose touchdowns (7).

Indeed, for Jeff Rodgers’ teams that have allowed three return touchdowns through eight games, this won’t be the most enjoyable week of preparation.

“He’s a fun guy to watch when you’re not trying to tackle him,” Rodgers said.

I never thought about that. When you hear someone speaking with an unexpected accent, it does immediately conjure some picture in one’s mind.

Today, though, whatever your accent, the key word is “entry.” South is in four hearts. West leads the spade ace: six, two, eight. West then shifts to the club jack. How should declarer proceed from there?

North’s negative double promised four hearts (or five or six in a hand too weak for a two-heart response). I agree with East’s not raising spades.

He has no spade honor, a very weak hand and the awful 4-3-3-3 distribution.

South is threatened with four losers: two spades, one diamond and one club. But he has 10 possible tricks: three hearts, three diamonds, two clubs, a long trump and a ruff in either hand.

The original declarer immediately drew trumps, then led his diamond jack, under which West signaled with the nine, which indicated an even number and denied the 10. So East took this trick and returned the spade seven.

West won and played a third spade, which had to be ruffed in the dummy.

Since the diamonds were blocked, the contract was unmakable.

South should have drawn at most two rounds of trumps before attacking diamonds.

Then he would have had a trump entry left in the dummy and would have received a sitting ovation from his partner!
