Born: April 21, 1923 Died: Nov. 8, 2014

Mary Kathryn Biros, age 91, of Mazon, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Park Pointe in Morris.

Born April 21, 1923, Mary Kathryn was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Genevieve Dolan-Poole.

She was raised in Mazon and graduated from Mazon Township High School. In her early years, Mary Kay worked for Mr. Hornsby before going to work at Biddle Oil in Morris. She managed the books for the family farms and was also a bookkeeper for AOK in Mazon until her retirement.

Mary Kay was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City, belonged to the Mazon Women’s Club and was a charter member of Coal City Area Club.

She loved to play pinochle, fish and the outdoors in general. Mary Kay played the organ and in years past not only took pleasure in ice skating, but taught her grandchildren to ice skate.

Survivors include her children, James (Diana) Biros of Morris and Barbara (Roger) Lund and Bill (Eileen) Biros, both of Mazon; eight grandchildren, Kristi (Tim) Meece of Burr Ridge, Korine (David) Mayberry and John Biros, both of Morris, Brian (Kelly) McArdle of Florida, Kimberly Robertson of Texas, Allen (Misty) Biros of Coal

City, Andrew (Krista) Biros of Mazon and Matthew (Janelle) Biros of Gardner; (19) great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Kay was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and one sister, Mardelle Shostrom.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, between the hours of 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 75 North Broadway (one block north of Illinois Route 113) in Coal City. Funeral services will follow Wednesday morning, November 12th at 10:00 a.m. in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 South Kankakee Street in Coal City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Robert Noesen officiating. Burial will be in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery, where Mary Kay will be laid to rest with her late husband John.

Pallbearers will be: John Biros, Brian McArdle, Allen Biros, Andrew Biros, Matthew Biros, Scott Biros and Cash Biros. Honorary pallbearers will be: Kristi Meece, Korine Mayberry and Kimberly Robertson.

Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Mary Kay’s memory to the Mazon Centennial Park or Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Clark (nee McLane), age 84, of Reddick, IL, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014, at Miller Health Care Center in Kankakee, IL. Born February 5, 1930, in Reddick to the late Erwin and Rita (nee Morse) McLane. Verna along with her husband John, were lifelong farmers in the Reddick area. She was a member of the Zoar Community Church where she was active on various committees and also a member of the Kankakee County Home Extension Association. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, working puzzles, and spending time with her family.

Verna was a very loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The call to protect and serve doesn’t leave veterans when they leave the United States Armed Services.

Several area veterans have chosen to continue their service locally by protecting their communities as police officers and deputies.

“It’s an easy transition from the Marines to police work,” said Minooka patrolman James Sinovich, who spent four years in active duty as a U.S. Marine. “It follows in the foot of serving our country on a global level. We’ve just scaled it down and are serving our community.”

Morris police officer Steve Huettemann served six years with the U.S. Army, half of that time as an active member, the other half as a reserve.

“Not everybody can see themselves doing this job,” he said. “I signed a document that I was willing to give up everything to serve my country. Serving my community is just a continuation of that.”

For some local officers, they served in more than one capacity before joining their local police department.

Lonnie Harvey, who joined the Grundy County Sheriff’s office in 1988 after he finished four years with the U.S. Air Force, didn’t stop there. He

“When I was a kid, I grew up playing war, yelling ‘bang, bang’ and arguing whether or not we got each other,” Harvey said. “I knew when I grew up, I wanted to be a soldier.”

“They’re going to have to select a new director and assistant, and neither of them will know how to do the job,” Johnson said. “There’s a lot of things that need to be taught.”

MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland announced that on Nov. 5, the grand jury returned the following indictments. The public is advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

• Eric Conda, 32, of Missoula, Montana, was indicted for

possession of more than 15 grams but less than 100 grams of cocaine, a Class 1 felony.

• Jose Franco, 28, of Streator, was indicted for possession of heroin, a Class 4 felony.

Radio legend shares stories at Morris library

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Although legendary WLS disc jockey and radio personality John Records Landecker gained his fame by playing top 40 hits, his middle name is no moniker.

It’s his real name.

His mother’s maiden name was Records. His biography is titled, “Records Truly is my Middle Name.”

Landecker was at the Morris Area Public Libraryon Saturday, talking about his career and sharing memories with fans. The idea to invite Landecker came from local radio morning host Kevin Schramm of WCSJ/WJDK. Schramm said he used to listen to Landecker’s show every night and even taped it.

“For me, it was the music and the way he would talk to the post,” Schramm said, referring

to the practice of DJs talking during the beginning of a song, up to the point where the vocals begin. “You don’t want to step on the vocals.”

Landecker was one of the most popular DJs not only in Chicago but across the nation.

WLS-AM’s signal was what Landecker called a “clear channel,” with such a strong signal that it reached across the country at night.

He worked nights at WLSAM in the 1970s, then went to broadcast in Canada before going to WLUP and WAGO. He bounced back to WLS, then to Cleveland and on to WJMK in Chicago, where his show was named, “Best Morning Show in Chicago,” and “Best Oldies Morning Show in America.”

He is now the host at WLSFM, 94.7, weeknights 8 to 11 p.m.

Ginny Bellamy of Morris enjoyed hearing Landecker’s behind-the-scenes stories. She

said she has good memories of her teenage son Jim listening to Landecker in the car in the 1970s.

“My son always wanted to listen to him in the back of the Pinto wagon as I was shuffling kids to games,” Bellamy said. “I think he liked that he was fresh and was on his level and that he could relate to the comments he was making on the artists.”

Bellamy said seeing Landecker in person was a treat.

“I enjoyed him,” she said.

“I think he was really down to earth, and it was fun that he shared all of his experiences. ... I think that we all want to be broadcasters.”

Landecker said when he started out, radio had a farther reach than it does now.

“I’m old enough to remember radio as the total entertainment experience,” he said.

One arrested in series of Morris burglaries

cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A Morris man has been arrested in connection with a series of burglaries that occurred in the area early Friday morning.

Police continue to investigate the burglaries and believe more people are involved, Chief Brent Dite said Ryan M. Monday .

Potochnic “We’ve recovered some of the stolen property already,” he said. “We have looked at all the cases in a comprehensive way and feel as though they may be connected.”

Ryan M. Potochnic, 18, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police and booked Friday into the Grundy County Jail on a charge of residential burglary.

Morris police detectives are asking for the public’s assistance as they continue to investigate, Dite said. Residents and

businesses that have surveillance cameras showing specific streets are asked to contact police so detectives can check footage for a suspect’s vehicle as it travels to and from the locations.

The suspect’s vehicle is a black four-door Hyundai. Police also seek two male suspects in their late teens who were wearing all dark clothing, according to a news release from Morris police. Police believe the burglaries all occurred between midnight and 8 a.m. Friday.

Police are looking for surveillance recordings from the 100 block of Deerpath Drive, 100 block of Brentwood Drive, 1300 block of Liberty Street, 700 block of East Jefferson Street and the 2400 block of Indian Grass Road in Morris.

Dite said Friday the burglaries took place in several locations, including the Grundy Area Vocational Center house being built on Indian Grass. According to a police report, suspects took copper piping and fittings, and drills and equipment totalling more than $5,000 from the GAVC house.

Landecker said he only realized the size of his audience when National Public Radio did an interview with him and the reporter said he had between 5 and 6 million listeners.

One of Landecker’s most popular segments was his “Boogie Check” slot during the last few minutes of each broadcast, when he took live calls from listeners – mostly teens – who asked questions or made comments. His replies were quick, witty and irreverent — and listeners loved it.

“Let’s boogie” was a big catchphrase in those days, he explained, and he combined

that with the fact that one of his fellow DJs would check his mustache for “boogies,” and Boogie Check began.

“I had no idea where it was going,” Landecker said. “We took live calls, and we had no delay system. ... Nobody else was doing this. There was no planning. I had the ability to be really quick on my feet, and it was a huge, huge success. ... Later, it was copied and attempted by the other radio stations.”

Syndication has become a downfall of getting good local DJs on the air, he said. Station owners have made stockholders the bottom line, rather than the listeners, he added.

Nevertheless, Landecker said good radio can still be found.

“WLS made a huge impact on the country, on the city and on the business,” Landecker said, “and it’s been a part of everything I’ve done since.”

White Oak teacher aide arrested on drug charges

“The situation was outside of the school building so it was safer to bring the students back into the school,” Shaw said.

She said initial calls were made to parents that buses were running late, and a second call was made later, after the school had a chance to gather the staff and had more information to release.

MORRIS – A Morris man was arrested Friday at White Oak Elementary School after his forewarned presence at the school caused it to be put on a lockdown.

Curtis J. Haugabook, 51, of Morris was taken into custody and booked into the Grundy County Jail by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department for an order of protection violation, as well as on a warrant for possession of a firearm without a FOID card.

Morris police were notified that Haugabook, a noncustodial parent of a student who attends

White Oak, was headed to the school Friday afternoon. Police dispatched three squad cars and one Grundy County deputy was called in, due to the Grundy warrant.

Morris Deputy Chief John Severson said Monday that students were not in danger Friday at White Oak, but precautions were made with the information they had.

“We had county information that he was wanted for firearms violation so we went in assuming he could be armed,” Severson said. “We intercepted him before anything could happen.”

A local Girl Scout Daisy Troop made up of seven area kindergarten girls were able to create their own pizza at Aurelio’s Pizza in Morris on Monday afternoon.

“Cheese and pepperoni are my favorite,” Kenzie Alonzo of Morris said while she watched her pizza go through the oven.

She said she’s made pizza before with her mom, but she loved the chance to make it with her friends in her Daisy Troop.

Larkin of Morris; two daughters, Katie (Kenneth) Nelson of Joliet and Colleen (Art) Arias of Diamond; one son, Robert W. Larkin of Morris; proud “papa” to seven grandchildren, Nicolas, Ezequiel, Junior, Maxell and Alexia Aria and Amanda and Molly Nelson.

Robert was born January 17, 1946, to the late Bernard and Lillian (Kozlowski) Larkin. He was a graduate of St. Jude Grade School and Joliet Catholic High School, Class of 1964. Robert was a successful and lifelong farmer in the Joliet, Minooka and Morris areas. Formerly of Joliet, Robert moved to Morris in 2004, where he enjoyed his new homestead with Mary. He loved being outdoors and even more, farming side by side with his son. Robert cherished his family and enjoyed being together for holidays and gatherings.

He is also survived by his brother, ROBERT E. LARKIN Donald S. (Jo Beth) Larkin of Minooka; Born: Jan. 17, 1946 sisters-in-law, Jane (Joseph) Riggs of Died: Nov. 8, 2014 Joliet and Beth (Theodore) Poplawski of Shorewood; one brother-in-law, William Robert “Bob” (Mary) Whitmer of Joliet; and many E. Larkin, age 68, nieces and nephews. passed away Preceded in death by his brothers, Saturday, November Ronald and Bernard J. (late Mary 8, 2014, at Edward Hospital in Naperville Feeney) Larkin.

MORRIS – If any football team wants to know how to close out a game, all it needs to do is ask Morris coach Alan Thorson for the game film from Saturday’s 35-23 win over Mahomet-Seymour in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Morris (7-4) held a 29-23 lead and took over on downs at its own 10-yard line with 11:12 to play. What followed was a yardage-chewing, time-consuming drive that left no doubt as to the game’s outcome. The Redskins marched 90 yards, all on the ground, with Matt Feiden capping the drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 3:41 left on the clock.

“We just kept pounding the ball at them, and the backs ran hard,” Morris center Zach Hansen said. “The entire offensive line did a great job of driving their guys backward.

“We worked hard in the weight room since the end of last season, and this makes all that work worth it.”

Things didn’t go so well early for the Redskins, who travel to Peoria at 2 p.m. Saturday for a Class 5A Quarterfinal game.

Mahomet-Seymour’s Tom Kenney returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown on the game’s third play. It was one of four picks thrown by quarterback Griffin Sobol on the day.

With 3:14 to play until halftime, Mahomet’s Matthew Prater kicked a 23-yard field goal to make it 23-14. Morris, however, was able to march downfield and, with 35 seconds until halftime, Griffin Sobol scored on a 1-yard sneak to make it 23-21 at intermission.

The Redskins made some defensive adjustments at halftime and shut out the Bulldogs after intermission. Hansen finished with three sacks as Morris brought more pressure in the second half.

“Their quarterback is a good player,” he said. “We wanted to put more pressure on him to help out our defensive backs. That helped us get the second-half shutout.”

Morris took the lead on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Griffin Sobol to Chase Hansen with 5:11 to play in the third, and Feiden’s fourth-quarter TD provided the final score.

The Redskins finished with 324 yards on the ground, including 143 by Jake Walker and 108 by Keagan Sobol.

DEFENSE SETS ANOTHER RECORD FOR FUTILITY

They now have played the worst two first halves in the franchise history in consecutive games. One week after surrendering a club-record 38 points in the first half against New England, the Bears trailed, 42-0, at halftime en route to a 55-14 Packers victory.

The Bears now have been outscored a combined 94-7 in the past three first halves. The 55 points permitted ties a franchise record.

Aaron Rodgers set an NFL record with six first-half touchdowns, matching his number of first-half incompletions, and spent the final quarter-and-a-half relaxing on the sideline.

Rodgers’ first two touchdowns went to tight ends, demonstrating Packers coach Mike McCarthy’s clear objective to attack a Mel Tucker defense unable to cover them. Green Bay clearly spent the bye week preparing to go after the Bears’ safeties, as Chris Conte, Brock Vereen and Ryan Mundy all played a part

As for the Bears’ bye week adjustments, they again failed to get any pressure on Rodgers, who

wasn’t sacked and was hit just twice. The Bears managed one or fewer sacks for the fourth time this season. Marc Trestman’s plan to achieve better offensive balance was nowhere to be seen early, when Cutler attempted passes on six of the Bears’ first eight plays. The Bears generated

their first turnover in almost a month, a Lance Briggs forced fumble, but they already trailed 35-0 and would return the favor with a Cutler fumble three plays later.

Trestman’s club matched a season high with 10 penalties (for 158 yards), including a pair of unsportsmanlike infractions – another ominous sign for a club that appeared disinterested and unprepared coming off a bye week.

Cutler at Lambeau: With two more interceptions, Cutler now has a 3:12 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a 0-4 record at Lambeau Field. He also was stripsacked and threw another pass off his back foot on fourth-andgoal that should’ve been intercepted and returned for a touchdown but was instead dropped by Sam Shields.

Trestman condemns Houston: Lamarr Houston missed the first game of his five-year career because of a season-ending ACL tear he suffered in Week 8 while celebrating his first sack in the fourth quarter of a game the Bears trailed by 25 points.

Trestman again expressed his

disappointment in Houston in a pregame interview with Bob Costas on NBC’s Football Night in America. “Lamarr knows what he did was completely inappropriate at the time,” Trestman said. “It was something that we not only don’t want to see on our team, we don’t want to be a part of that. That’s not what the NFL is all about.”

Willie Young made his second start of the season in Houston’s absence. Cornelius Washington was the first defensive end off the bench, spelling Young on the Bears’ first defensive series.

Insult and injuries: Receiver Brandon Marshall suffered an ankle injury late in the third quarter and quickly was ruled out for the remainder of the game. Jordan Mills suffered a rib injury in the first half and never returned. Starting left guard Michael Ola took over at right tackle, with Brian de la Puente entering the game at left guard. Tight end Martellus Bennett (ribs) played but had an early drop, was targeted on Cutler’s first pick and didn’t run after the catch with his same angry temperament.

Allen, Bears’ defense comes up empty

mpotash@suntimes.com GREEN BAY, Wis. – Two months into his time with the Bears, Jared Allen still hasn’t won at Soldier Field – with three consecutive home losses with the team, he’s 0-10. But he hasn’t had much luck at Lambeau Field, either.

Allen came into Sunday night’s game against the Packers with one victory in seven games at Lambeau – he’s 1-5-1 overall, including a 26-26 tie last season with the Minnesota Vikings and a 24-10 playoff loss after the 2012 season.

Allen had seven of his 16 sacks against the Packers at Lambeau Field, including three with the Vikings against Aaron Rodgers in his lone victory at Green Bay – 38-26 in 2009, when Brett Favre was at his postPackers best with four touchdown passes and a 128.6 rating.

The Vikings led 24-3 in the game and held on for the victory.

Any time the Bears can get that kind of quarterback play and that kind of lead will be fine

When he signed with the Bears, he made no bones about one big reason why: Playing with Jay Cutler would give him more opportunities to play with the wind at his back – rushing the passer with a big lead.

It hasn’t quite worked out that way. The Bears have managed two-touchdown leads twice – against the Panthers (21-7) and

the Falcons (27-13). And only against the Falcons were they able to finish the job. Allen had his lone solo sack two plays after the Bears took a 27-13 lead in the fourth quarter of that game.

The Bears are counting on Allen to have a big second half after he had on 1.5 sacks in the first eight games. And nowhere did they need his

presence to be felt more than against the Packers. When Allen missed the Bears’ game against them at Soldier Field in Week 4, they had little or no pressure on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ quarterback made them pay, with four touchdown passes and a 151.2 passer rating in a 38-17 victory.

“Green Bay is Green Bay. But Green Bay-Chicago Bears [on] Sunday Night Football in Lambeau – I don’t know if it gets much more fun than that. So if you’re nervous or anxious, it’s fun.

Morris’ Shannon sets personal mark at state STAFF REPORTS Although she didn’t reached the goals she set for herself, Morris freshman Mya Shannon still had a good day at the IHSA Class 2A state cross country finals Saturday in Peoria. Shannon finished 43rd, clocking in with a personal-best time of 18:22.

“Mya set some pretty lofty goals for herself today,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said.

“While she wasn’t all-state and didn’t break 18 minutes, she ran a faster time on a longer course, five hundredths longer, and on a windy day. The experience she gained today and the championship season that she had will

make her better the next three years.

“High school is about learning, maturing, developing and it’s about making lasting memories. To race at the state meet in this incredible environment, and then get to watch a home Morris playoff football game, what a great weekend for a gal that is passionate about athletics and has a great deal of Redskin pride.”

Minooka had a pair of allstaters in Ashley Tutt and Mackenzie Callahan to help the Indians take eighth place in Class 3A with 258 points.

Tutt took sixth place in 17:01 while Callahan finished 15th in

17:11. Emily Shelton fell just shy of all-state honors after taking 29th in 17:31. Tutt and Callahan were their program’s first allstaters.

The top individual showing was turned in in the Class 1A girls race, where Gardner-South Wilmington’s Daly Galloway improved one spot from a year ago to take second place. She turned in a time of 16:52 while champion Anna Sophi Keller of St. Anthony ran in 16:27.

Seneca took ninth place in that race with Eva Bruno (27th, 18:30), Carina Collet (47th, 18:57), Sarah Virgo (60th, 19:20) and Sarah Cameron (91st, 19:45) leading the way.

The Coal City defense stopped the Wave after Dibble’s go-ahead touchdown, and then the Coalers ran out the final four-plus minutes with Dibble following left tackle Andrew Mathena, left guard Kurtis Smith, center Matt Long, right guard Alec Leasure and right tackle L.J. Lightner.

“We wore them down in the fourth quarter,” Onsen said.

Next up for Coal City is a home quarterfinal game against Interstate Eight Large adversary Manteno. In Week 7, the Coalers lost at Manteno, 24-23.

“After the tough loss at Manteno, we really put it together in Weeks 8 and 9,” Onsen said.

“I’m really happy with where we are.”

Dibble rushed for 304 yards on 40 carries and scored all four touchdowns Saturday as the Coalers downed previously unbeaten St. Edward, 25-20, in the second round of the Class 4A football playoffs in Elgin.

“Nothing fancy. Everyone knows what we are going to do,” Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said. “We are going to give the ball to Jack and let him run behind our line. ‘Here it is, you have to come and stop it.’ ” Dibble scored on a 2-yard run in the first half, which ended with the Coalers (9-2) ahead, 7-6.

He scored from 28 and 33 yards in the third quarter, when St.

Edward (10-1) moved ahead, 2019. His 17-yard run with about eight minutes remaining in the game accounted for the final points.

“We’ve been getting better and better,” Onsen said. “Our offensive line is jelling, and Jack (Dibble) is running very well.”

Dibble went over 2,200 yards for the season and is averaging more than 200 yards a game.

On the other side of the ball, defensive back Corey Jurzak had a strong game with eight solo tackles, 10 total stops and an interception he returned 23 yards. Paul Jones made 10 tackles, four for loss. Defensive end Kevin Myers had a big sack and caused a fumble for a fourth-quarter turnover.

We owe veterans more respect Today is a day when we will see flags flying, men and women in military uniforms, and ceremonies where children put their hands over their hearts as patriotic songs are played.

It’s wonderful to honor our veterans.

For all they have done, they deserve a day to be given accolades.

There were 19.6 million military veterans in the United States as of 2013, according to the Census Bureau. Of those, 9.3 million were 65 years and older, and 1.6 million were younger than age 35. In 2013, there were 3.6 million veterans with a service-connected disability, which is one that was a result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service.

Veterans likely have seen images most of us can’t imagine: The horrors of a movie or video game can’t compare to the battlefield many veterans have experienced – and fought on – firsthand.

And they did so because they believed in something bigger than themselves: They believed in their country. They sacrificed for the benefit of others. They understood that a country that cherishes freedom as an ideal requires some give up their freedom for the benefit of others.

In many ways, our country fails veterans. Think of how many have had to wait to get serviced at the nation’s veterans hospitals. Multiple deployments to dangerous, hostile lands can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder or suicide.

There are 30,000 to 32,000 U.S. deaths from suicide a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and of those, about 20 percent are veterans.

We owe them more.

Saying thank you to a veteran, or attending a Veterans Day ceremony to honor them, is a wonderful, heartfelt gesture.

But we cannot stop with that: We must demand our veterans receive the care they deserve for giving their all for their country. We must show our gratitude every day, not just the one day a year set aside for doing so.

As John F. Kennedy once said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Quinn loses to fresh face

Bruce Rauner out-performed his fellow Republican Bill Brady’s 2010 gubernatorial election performance in every region of the state last week. As I write this, with less than half a percent of the vote yet to be counted, Rauner has a big fivepoint margin over Gov. Pat Quinn and appears to have won a majority vote in a three-way election.

The national headwinds against the Democratic Party surely played a role in the Quinn loss.

Even so, Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka is widely considered one of the most popular Republicans in Illinois, and yet, she under-performed Rauner.

As I write this GOP Rep. Tom Cross and Democratic Sen. Michael Frerichs are just about tied in the treasurer’s race. And Republican Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier appears to have narrowly survived an attempt to oust him.

Rich Miller above the magic 20 percent number in Chicago – a point where a Republican can help balance out the rest of the state’s vote. But he didn’t really need it. He out-performed Brady’s 2010 performance in suburban Cook County by six points, outdid the Downstater Brady in his own region by a point and hugely trumped Brady’s 2010 numbers throughout the collar counties.

In the end, Quinn was just too unpopular after six years of not producing enough results on the economy and the budget, and was likely too overly reliant on negative campaign ads.

One of Quinn’s few positive messages was about raising the minimum wage, but that campaign issue – bolstered by a statewide, non-binding

referendum – failed to spark Democratic turnout and may have worked against Quinn with suburban women, to whom “minimum wage” is a stigma and something to be avoided.

Even worse, Quinn seemed to build his entire campaign around this crazy theory. It’s apparently why he ran a “base” campaign, constantly talking about raising the minimum wage, bashing Rauner for being a heartless billionaire, etc.

The whole idea, from the TV ads down to the voter registration and the minimum wage ballot initiative, was to fire up the base and jack up turnout. Quinn didn’t have to worry about spending too much time and money appealing to suburban women, or Downstaters or whomever. He could focus almost his entire effort on turning out the base with a couple of strongly populist issues.

Also, keep in mind that

Quinn preferred to run against Rauner. From the very beginning he wanted to run this sort of populist campaign and he believed Rauner would be the best opponent to use it against.

Oops.

Another part of Quinn’s strategy was to depress Rauner’s Downstate base by funding the pro-life, pro-gun Libertarian Party candidate. Two suits give twice the chances

Two-suiters are powerful ... if you find a fit with partner. In general, the quicker you show your suits, the better. In this deal, after West opened one spade, North overcalled two no-trump, the Unusual No-Trump, to guarantee at least five cards in each of the lowest-ranking unbid suits: clubs and diamonds. After East passed, South gave preference with three diamonds. What should North have done now?

With a weak hand, North would have passed; with a middling hand, he would have flipped a coin -- perhaps raised quietly to four diamonds; but with such a big hand, he had to force to game.

And just in case there was a magic fit, he rebid four hearts. This was a splinter bid, which usually would have indicated a singleton, but in this case strongly suggested a void. And it promised a huge hand because it was a slam-try opposite a partner who had promised nothing.

Here, of course, South signed off in five diamonds, hoping partner would get the message.

Against five diamonds, West led the spade ace, cashed the spade king, and shifted to a trump. Declarer cashed a second trump, then turned to clubs, ruffing the third round in his hand. He then ruffed a heart high in the dummy, drew East’s last trump, and claimed.

Always try to show a two-suiter in one bid rather than two, so partner can evaluate his hand immediately.
