MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Grundy County Environmental & Resource Conservation Office is having its Christmas toy drive for gently used toys, books, plush animals, dolls, puzzles and DVDs for underprivileged children.

The drive will start on Nov. 14 and run through Dec. 12, according to a news release.

The following locations will

be accepting items: • Grundy County Administration Building, 1320 Union St., Morris • Morris Area Public Library, 604 Liberty St., Morris • Coal City Public Library District, 85 N. Garfield St., Coal City • Fossil Ridge Library, 386 W. Kennedy Road, Braidwood • Three Rivers Library – Channahon, 25207 W. Channon Drive, Channahon

• Three Rivers Library – Minooka; 109 N. Wabena, Minooka All donations will be distributed by Rotary International, Grundy County Health Department, and the Mazon Methodist Church to needy children in time for Christmas.

Last year the drive provided close to 100 boxes or toys, books and DVDs, according to the news release. By giving these toys to needy children instead

of disposing of them does a twofold good deed of giving joy to children and lessening the load at landfills.

No toys are to be donated that have been recalled or are badly damaged.

Recent Grundy County indictments announced MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland recently released the following felony dispositions.

The State’s Attorney’s Office often reaches plea agreements in cases following a careful consideration of the nature of the charges, the facts of the case, a thorough consultation with the crime victim, a review of the offender’s criminal history, and weighing aggravating and mitigating factors, according to a news release from Helland’s office.

The State’s Attorney’s Office makes no representation as to the accuracy of such infor-

mation. In all cases, the official records of the court clerk should be consulted for confirmation.

• David Burton, 49, of Morris, pleaded guilty to aggravated fleeing and eluding police, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Burton also pleaded guilty to domestic battery, a Class 3 felony, and was sentenced to 99 days in the county jail. Burton was placed on one year of conditional discharge on the domestic battery charge.

• Deion Gray-Jones, 19, of Minooka, pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the

influence, a Class 4 felony, and criminal sexual abuse, a Class 4 felony. The sexual abuse charge involved a minor under age 16. He was sentenced to 110 days in the county jail.

Gray-Jones was placed on probation for 30 months and was assessed fines and court costs of $1,900. Gray-Jones must attend the Grundy County Victim Impact Panel. Gray-Jones must register as a sex offender for 10 years.

• Steven Kapusniak Jr., 57, of Braidwood, pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony, and was sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Kapusniak was ordered

to pay more than $700 in fines and court costs. Kapusniak must surrender his FOID card and must register as a sex offender for life.

• Stefan Nikolov, 26, of Morris, pleaded guilty to possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of cannabis, a Class 4 felony, and was placed on two years probation. Nikolov was ordered to pay more than $2,800 in fines and court costs. Nikolov served four days in the county jail.

• Douglas Pettit, 56, of Morris, pleaded guilty to child pornography, a Class 1 felony, and was sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – For the past year, well-known Morris Santa Claus, Joe Corsello, and his friend Carol Walker met once a week at Corsello’s home in their own version of the book “Tuesdays with Morrie.”

“This was ‘Fridays with Joe,’” Walker said, a play on the name of the memoir by sports columnist Mitch Albom, who recounted in his book his weekly Tuesday meetings with his former professor, Morrie Schwartz, as Morrie was dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Over the months, Corsello relayed 40 years’ worth of stories of playing Santa Claus to countless little girls and boys throughout Morris – painting his eyebrows white with shoe polish, carefully tacking on

The result of the Friday sessions was a new book, “Mr. C – A Portrait of Santa,” written

by Walker and in stores now.

“I love it,” Corsello said of the book. “We had a lot more stories, but we couldn’t put them all in. Maybe we’ll have another one later.”

It was popular immediately with sales, and stores throughout town requested copies.

“We had to reorder already,” Corsello said.

Walker said one person bought nine copies, then called her up a couple of days later and ordered two more. Three hundred were ordered before Walker placed a second order.

“I got such joy out of writing these,” Walker said. “Two hours would pass by, and I wouldn’t even know it. ... I think he’s an amazing man. To me, he has the soul of Santa.”

6 Schools look forward to using new assessment

and ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – With Adequate Yearly Progress a thing of the past and the concentration moving to student growth, Illinois schools are looking forward to using new assessments.

Illinois is changing the way it assesses schools and school districts by changing to a growth model and providing scores on a growth model table on its school report card, available at www. illinoisreportcard.com.

School report cards continue to indicate students’ proficiency, as well as compare students’ growth from year to year through the average growth value.

According to the report card, growth value scores more than 100 indicate students are improving relative to their grade level. An example is moving from “below standards” to “meets standards.”

“It’s much more important to see growth,” Assistant Superintendent Stephan Palaniuk with Minooka Grade School District 201 said.

Adequate Yearly Progress benchmarks under the federal No Child Left Behind Act was the system previously used to determine whether a district made a performance

target on standardized tests.

Under NCLB, students were expected to be proficient in reading and math, with 100 percent of students considered proficient by the time it ended in the 2013-14 school year. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois education leaders did not think AYP provided the information as useful as it could.

“AYP only reflects how schools and districts perform at one point in time and does not reflect how students are learning,” according to the ISBE website.

But meeting that 100 percent goal is no longer as important as it once was. Illinois applied for and received a waiver to the federal educa-

tion requirements imposed by the 2001 act. The waiver took effect July 1.

By the following Christmas, Morris had a new Santa – Corsello.

Corsello took it seriously, too, sometimes working six days a week on top of his teaching job. He visited private homes and spent time at the Santa House in Morris, Hornsby’s store, Morris Hospital, Morris Country Club, at local schools and many more places.

He said his personal favorite story in the book is about a blind boy sitting on his lap.

The boy touched his face and suit and tummy, and the memory still touches Corsello to this day.

“It brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it,” he said.

Walker said her favorite part is when Corsello tells of the children touching the white fur on his cuff. He couldn’t feel their touch, he said, but he felt it in his heart.

Morris resident Mary Goolsby said Santa Corsello visited her home for years and even knew the names of the older grandchildren. The kids

were always surprised, but he had them as students in high school, Goolsby said, and so he knew them.

“He was great,” she said.

“He was real jovial, just like Santa. I didn’t realize until I read the book how many homes he went to.”

Corsello said he only did one Santa visit last year. It was for a family he had visited every season for 22 years.

He has trouble walking these days, he said, and it wouldn’t do for the children to see Santa coming up to their homes with a walker.

He did it for so many years because of love – of the children for Santa and of him for the children.

“Little kids are just heartwarming,” he said. “I did it because I loved it and because I truly love kids.”

The book is available for purchase at numerous locations in downtown Morris: Morris Area Public Library, Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Grundy County Historical Society, Brianna Lynns, The Thoughtful Spot, Hallmark, Gigi’s, True North, and it will be available at The Front Porch soon.

It costs $20, and part of the proceeds go to the Grundy County Historical Society.

Farmer selfies highlight harvest season

By CHRIS LaFORTUNE clafortune@shawmedia.com GRUNDY COUNTY – A photo contest by the Grundy County Farm Bureau aims to show the world all the work that goes into providing food for the dinner table.

The farm bureau’s Farmer Selfie Contest showcases the work taking place on farms during the harvest season, said Tasha Bunting, Grundy County Farm Bureau manager.

The contest, established by the farm bureau’s young leaders group, is open to farmers and just about anyone else that wants to take part, Bunting said. It ends Wednesday.

“Anybody that has a garden in the backyard or a really neat harvest or fall photograph they would like to submit would be eligible,” she said.

The only qualification is that the photo be a selfie. Bunting said a few people have sent in nice landscape photos, but those will go into a contest later this winter.

The winning photographer will be chosen by the number of likes their photos get on the farm bureau’s Facebook page, Bunting said. The winner receives a Harvest for All Tractor and “Food in the Field” for their work crews.

The tractor is designed by the Illinois Farm Bureau young

leader committee and is a 1/64size tractor replica, Bunting said.

Sara Mitchell, a young leader with the farm bureau, has submitted a few photos to the contest. One features Mitchell and her husband riding in a combine while helping harvest her father’s fields. The photo was taken in the combine’s mirror, the couple reflected back.

She titled it, “Sunday Evening Date Night.”

“My husband and I raise show pigs together, and I kept saying we were going to do one with our pig in the background,” the Verona resident said. “But I saw it and I thought, that would be pretty interesting, let’s take a picture in the mirror.”

Mitchell likes the photo contest because it gives the area’s farmers a chance to show the work that goes into providing food for people, she said.

“Agriculture is a family thing, and it takes having everyone out there,” Mitchell said.

“It’s a way of life. ... I remember growing up sitting in the buddy seat with my dad, and now I’m sitting in there with my husband helping him out, too.”

The selfie contest is a way to connect with consumers, Mitchell said, to show that it’s not just mega-corporations providing their food.

“We have our families out

there doing something that we care about,” she said. “We care about agriculture and that’s why we do it.”

“That jobs bill will help all Americans and the economy ,as well. We need to start creating jobs, and once they are created, it will improve the economy. We are in control of this and we can take care of this.”

Kinzinger agrees more jobs are needed in the state.

“Small businesses drive the American economy, creating seven out of every 10 jobs,” he said. “We need to get the government out of the way and let businesses do what they do best, which is innovate and create jobs.”

One problem he sees: “We are losing jobs to Indiana,” he said. “We need a new government in Springfield that will help change that.”

Joining the Air Force and serving in Iraq and Afghanistan gave him a new perspective on issues facing the country, Kinzinger said.

“It was during a tour of duty that I realized Washington needs more representatives who are willing to cast the tough votes to ensure a better future for America and its fu-

ture generations,” Kinzinger said. “For this reason, I decided to serve our country in a different capacity by running for Congress.”

During his time in the district, Kinzinger said he has worked with members of both parties to help move the country forward.

“That includes introducing bipartisan legislation to rein in run-away government spending, while also working on ways to make the government more efficient in order to empower individuals,” he said.

He also wants to see the Affordable Care Act repealed.

“Most people’s premiums have gone up and deductibles have skyrocketed, which is a massive tax increase,” he said.

“We need to have a plan put forth and passed to show American people what we stand for.

We need to make sure health care is accessible and affordable for everyone.”

If he is re-elected, Kinzinger said he wants to bring government back to the people of the district.

“I want to restore American value to the district again, and that’s why I’m running for re-election.”

Five questions on your ballot Tuesday is Election Day, and we hope if you haven’t already cast a ballot through early voting options, you do so Nov. 4. Decisions made next week will shape w the county in particular for the next several years. Make sure your voice is heard.

Before you even get to vote for a single candidate in Tuesday’s election, you’ll see five statewide questions on your ballot.

Two of the questions are proposed amendments to the Illinois Constitution. The other three questions are advisory questions and are nonbinding. This is your chance to weigh in on some important issues.

A look at the five questions: • Victims’ rights amendment: This proposed amendment makes changes to Section 8.1 of Article I of the Illinois Constitution. If approved, courts will have to hear and rule on crime victims’ requests for their rights to be enforced, and a victim’s safety will have to be a factor in the setting of bond, granting parole and determining conditions of a criminal’s release. It also clarifies that crime victims have the right to be notified of a criminal’s conviction, sentencing, imprisonment and release.

• Voting rights: This proposed amendment adds a Section 8 to Article III of the Illinois Constitution. It states that no person can be denied the right to register to vote or vote based on race, color, religion, ethnicity, language, sex, sexual orientation or income. There have been no reported incidents of voter suppression in Illinois, but backers of the amendment said it will prevent future state lawmakers from enacting voter identification laws.

• Minimum wage: This question asks whether the minimum wage in Illinois for adults over the age of 18 should be raised to $10 an hour by Jan. 1. The current minimum wage is $8.25 an hour – the sixth highest in the U.S. The federal rate is $7.25 an hour.

• Contraception: This question asks whether any health insurance plan in Illinois that provides prescription drug coverage should be required to include prescription birth control as part of that coverage. State law already requires health insurers to cover contraception.

• Millionaire tax: This question asks whether the Illinois Constitution should be amended to require that each school district receive additional revenue – based on student population – from an additional 3 percent tax on income greater than $1 million. The question has been part of a larger debate as to whether the state should move from a flat income tax to a progressive one based on income.

That’s why I’m fighting to amend the Illinois Constitution.

When their murderer’s sentencing day came, I wasn’t allowed to make a victim impact statement. Having the opportunity to address the court in this manner wouldn’t have provided complete closure, but it would’ve forced the murderer to hear how he’s affected me as it went into the record.

If the Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights – also known as Marsy’s Law – gets ap-

proval from voters Nov. 4, victims and their families finally will have a way to correct violations of their rights.

By voting yes, you’ll help strengthen victims’ rights in court proceedings against their offenders, allow them the right to speak in court if their rights are violated, and ensure those rights are enforceable.

Dibble scores five TDs in win

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – During the course of the regular season, Jack Dibble was the workhorse for the Coal City offense.

So, it should come as no surprise that Dibble, a 5-foot10, 185-pound senior running back, put the Coalers on his shoulders right from the start of Friday night’s Class 4A first-round playoff game against Mendota, a 40-14 Coalers victory.

Dibble took a handoff on the game’s first play from scrimmage and bolted through the line, cut to the left sideline and outran the Mendota defense for a 63-yard touchdown and a quick 7-0 lead. It was just the beginning of a 260-yard, five-touchdown performance

by Dibble.

“It was all the offensive line,” he said. “The coaches preach to us all the time to finish, but we also wanted to start strong and we were able to do that. That first play gave our defense the motivation to go out and get stops and gave the O-line motivation to keep blocking.”

Mendota answered with a 65-yard touchdown drive, then scored again to take a 14-7 advantage late in the first quarter.

The second quarter, however, belonged to Dibble and the Coalers.

After the Trojans’ second touchdown, Coal City quarterback Nick Micetich faked a handoff to Dibble and streaked 61 yards to the Trojan 19. A few plays later, Dibble went over from 3 yards out, but the conversion failed and Coal City trailed, 14-13.

He took the snap and ran to the right, finding the end zone for two more points and a 2114 Coal City lead, which they took into halftime.

“Our defense took a little while to get going,” Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said.

“Once we figured out what they were doing, we went back to basics and our guys did what they had to do. We pursued to the ball very well, especially after that first quarter.”

Dibble finished the first half with 122 yards on 18 attempts to go with his three touchdowns and 2-point con-

version.

Midway through the third quarter, Micetich again faked a handoff to Dibble. With the Mendota defense flowing in DIbble’s direction, Micetich took off the other way and went the distance for a 43yard touchdown. The junior signal-caller finished with 120 yards on eight carries.

“Nick did a real good job of tucking the ball once in a while,” Onsen said. “That

keeps the defense honest, and they can’t key on Jack so much and it just opens things up more.”

On Mendota’s first play after Micetich’s touchdown, Junior Arias intercepted a pass that was tipped by both a Mendota receiver and Coal City defensive back Brad Littleton.

Arias’ play gave Coal City the ball at the Coalers’ own 28. On the 10th play of the drive, Dibble sprinted 37 yards for his

fourth touchdown.

His fifth came from 15 yards out on the Coalers’ next drive, providing the final score.

Coal City, which won its eighth straight home playoff game, advances to take on the winner of today’s Rock Island Alleman-Elgin St. Edward game. No matter who wins, Coal City will be on the road.

“At this point of the year, it’s do or die,” Dibble said.

“We want to keep on doing.”

There is no mention of the timing of the servng in that old saying, but if it’s best served late, then count Minooka’s volleyball team well-served.

The Indians (24-9) avenged a loss to Rock Island in last year’s regional title match Thursday night by beating the Rocks, 25-19, 25-17, to win the championship of this year’s Class 4A Moline Regional.

“Hiring Joe, in my opinion, is a championship move, and they’re letting everyone know we’re going for it,” said Cubs reliever Wesley Wright, who played for the Cubs’ newest manager, Maddon, the final two months of 2013.

In a move considered inevitable for the past week, the Cubs made official their highest-profile managerial hire in eight years Friday, announcing the “firing” of manager Rick Renteria about two hours before announcing a Monday news conference to introduce Maddon.

Terms of Maddon’s multiyear deal were not announced, but it’s believed he got at least close to the five years, $25 mil-

lion he was said to be seeking – making him one of the three highest paid managers in the game and the highest in Cubs history.

The biggest signing in Theo Epstein’s three years running the team came exactly one week after Maddon exercised an opt-out clause with a year left on his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

In making the dual announcements Friday, the Cubs issued a lengthy statement on Renteria, whose sudden ouster one year into a three-year contract is viewed by many in the industry as unjust.

“We saw [Maddon’s availability] as a unique opportunity and faced a clear dilemma: be loyal to Rick or be loyal to the organization,” Epstein said in the statement. “In this business of trying to win a world championship for the first time in 107 years, the organization has priority over

any one individual. We decided to pursue Joe.” Epstein came close to hiring Maddon as the Red Sox manager 11 years ago before choosing the more experienced Terry Francona.

“Rick deserved to come back for another season as Cubs manager, and we said as much when we announced that he would be returning in 2015. We met with Rick two weeks ago for a long, end-ofseason evaluation and discussed plans for next season.

We praised Rick to the media and to our season ticket holders. These actions were made in good faith.”

Cubs insiders say the sudden availability of a manager who represents the ideal fit for this phase of the team’s rebuilding process made it impossible to pass on a chance to hire Maddon – regardless of how it might look jettisoning Renteria after only one year and go-

ing through three managers in four seasons.

Renteria was offered a chance to stay with the organization in another capacity, according to the statement. He turned it down.

Renteria declined comment through his agent Friday.

Admittedly, “He deserved better, and we wish him nothing but the best,” Epstein said in the statement.

Sources say Maddon has made no demands to bring any of his own coaches in, and a staff shakeup is not anticipated. No more than one or two new coaches are expected to join him.

Despite wide speculation he could be targeting longtime Rays bench coach Dave Martinez – an ex-Cub interviewed last year for the managerial opening – sources suggest that is unlikely. Martinez is a candidate to replace Maddon in Tampa Bay and remains un-

der contract there regardless.

Maddon, a two-time manager of the year, oversaw the same kind of transition in Tampa Bay that the Cubs are trying to pull off, going from last place to the World Series in his third year there, 2008 – the first of five 90-win seasons.

An innovative thinker, exceptional communicator and only manager to lead the low-budget Rays to a winning record, Maddon, 60, is a matchup-minded strategist built for the National League.

Wright said he hated to see Renteria lose his job. But he also knows Maddon’s value.

“Just to see how relaxed and comfortable he was with what he believed in and brought to the table rubbed off on players,” Wright said. “There aren’t a lot of guys who aren’t players who can have as much impact on the game with what they do and how they prepare, to affect the entire team.”

By MARK POTASH mpotash@suntimes.com After Soldier Field’s playing surface showed its wear in the Bears’ 27-14 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 19, the grass field will be re-sodded after tonight’s international rugby match in time for the Bears’ next home game against the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 16.

Depending on the wearand-tear from the rugby match between New Zealand’s All Blacks and USA Golden Eagles, the grass field will be partially or totally replaced, said Luca Serra, spokesman for SMG, which manages Soldier Field for the Chicago Park District.

Partial re-sodding generally is done down the middle of the field between the hash marks.

This will be the third re-sodding of Soldier Field’s playing surface since August. A entirely new field was installed before the Bears’ first preseason game. After two preseason games and the regular-season

A “field committee” comprised of executives from the Bears, their ground crew and

SMG examines the field surface after each game. The decision to re-sod after the rugby match was made after the field was examined after the Dolphins game, when players on both teams slipped and fell during the game.

The Soldier Field playing surface generally is at least partially re-sodded two or three times a season.

The cost of re-sodding can run from $100,000 for a “between-the-hashes” job to $250,000 for an entire replacement, Serra said.

A second re-sod of a new surface at this point of the season is a bit surprising considering the Bears will have played only three home games in a 13-week span before the Vikings game Nov. 16. The only other events in that period were three concerts in August – which were not a problem for the surface

because of good weather, Serra said – and the rugby match Tonight.

But when the Bears play the Vikings on Nov. 16, it will begin a stretch of five home games in a six-week period. It remains to be seen how the field holds up to that much activity.

“That’s the $50,000 question,” Serra said, “because you’re out of a grass-growing season. It all depends on the weather that we get. If we get a lot of moisture on game days, [which] tends to tear up the field a lot more, then we’re going to be dealt a different hand.”

This week we have had a series of deals in which the bidding has not been either clear-cut or accurate. And on some, the opening lead has been weird. Here is one more in which the right final contract was not reached.

How should the auction have gone?

North might have rebid three clubs with such a strong suit and seven playing tricks. South’s sensible two-diamond rebid was forcing for one round. Note also that this guaranteed at least five spades and denied four hearts; with 5-4-4-0 distribution, he would have rebid two hearts -- we love majors and dislike minors. Then maybe North should have continued with two hearts (hoping partner could bid no-trump) or two no-trump (hoping it would not wrongside the contract).

However, when North bid two spades, South should not have jumped to four spades. He should have bid three no-trump to offer a choice of games. Here, North would have passed, but if he had held three spades, he would have corrected back to four spades.

As you will have seen, there are 10 top tricks in no-trump: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and six clubs.

But four spades had no chance. And even if spades had been 3-3, careful defense could have defeated that game.

Always try to keep your options open. And remember that partner will not forget your earlier bids and their meanings.

Dear Doctor K: My job requires a lot of travel, and I recently became pregnant with my first child. What do I need to know about traveling safely during pregnancy?

Dear reader: Being pregnant doesn’t mean you have to stay at home for nine months. There are exceptions; particularly in the last three months, some women develop complications of pregnancy that require them to be resting.

But for most women, travel poses no threat to the mother or child.

But travel by car, train or airplane can be less comfortable when you’re pregnant, so you should take a few precautions to travel comfortably and safely.

First, check with your obstetrical care provider to find out when he or she considers it safe for you to travel.

As I’m sure you know, pregnancy is typically divided into three trimesters, with each trimester a three-month period. Travel is generally considered safe during the first and second trimesters. In terms of comfort, the best time to travel is after your fourth month (when morning sickness is gone) and before your third trimester. But if you’re traveling for work, you may not have that much control over your travel schedule.

I do think it’s wise to avoid traveling long distances in the last month before your due date, as due dates can be uncertain and babies can come early.

Ask your doctor if he or she recommends that you limit long-distance travel even earlier. Airlines also have their own rules. Most airlines prohibit international travel after 32 weeks of pregnancy and domestic travel after 34 to 36 weeks.

At the airport, don’t wor-

What about airport scanners? You don’t need to worry about them, either.

Let me put it in context. We are all constantly exposed to a low level of radiation from the sun. You would have to go through 25,000 airport scanners to be exposed to the amount of radiation that you are naturally exposed to in a year.

While the airport scanner doesn’t pose a risk, the airplane does. Once on the plane, don’t sit for more than one hour at a time if you can avoid it.

Walk around and stretch your legs frequently to reduce leg cramps. If you must stay in your seat, move your arms and legs to improve blood flow and prevent blood clots from forming. (The same advice applies if you are driving: Take breaks every hour for a short walk.) And always wear a seat belt on an airplane, even if the captain has turned off the seat belt sign.

Finally, drink at least six to eight glasses of water each day. This will keep you from getting dehydrated and will also prevent you from retaining water. Carry a water bottle with you in the car or on the plane and drink from it frequently.

If you take simple precautions, you can have the benefits of traveling throughout most of your pregnancy.

My opponent has recently made some untrue statements about my experience and qualifications. I shouldn’t be surprised as he used the same tactics inthe primary against Ron Marx, trying to ruin a good man’s reputation.
