Ragtime on the River raises $43,000 for charitable care MORRIS DAILY HERALD Each year, more than $1.4 million is spent to provide care for residents of Pleasant View, a Lutheran Life Community in Ottawa, who have outlived their financial resources.

Ragtime on the River, Pleasant View’s only fundraising event of the year, was created in 2012 and has steadily grown into one of the area’s most popular events, according to a news release.

This year’s record crowd was treated to a cocktail reception before boarding the Spirit of Peoria at Starved Rock, and spent more than two hours cruising the Illinois River while dining on appetizer buffets and desserts.

Pamela Beckett, foundation regional director for Lutheran Life Communities, thanked attendees for their support of the mission and ministry of Pleasant View. In addition to providing charitable care for Pleasant View, Beckett continues to

“We are so close to completing the entire Pleasant View campus,” Beckett said in the news release. “More than $26

million has been invested in campus renewal and renovation by Lutheran Life Communities, with nearly $3 million raised by the foundation for the residents of Pleasant View.

With just over $400,000 left to raise for the new therapy center, we are anxious to reach our goal.”

The addition of the new therapy center also will allow Pleasant View to dedicate its chapel as a permanent worship space.

BRIEF Minooka senior named ‘Student of the Month’ MINOOKA – Minooka Community High School senior Emily Knaub, daughter of Melissa and Scott Knaub of Channahon, was named the Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month” for September.

In the classroom, Knaub maintains a 4.6 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale). Outside the classroom, she is active with several Minooka high athletic teams and student organizations, including golf, basketball, National Honor Society (president) and Spanish National Honor Society, according to a news release from the school district.

After graduation, Knaub plans to attend a four-year university and will major in secondary education mathematics, with aspirations to eventually earn her doctorate degree and become a school principal.

Watson is far more than “just” a teacher to Danielle Diamond, a librarian at the Coal City Public Library who nominated her for her tireless passion for teaching and making learning exciting.

“For the past 10 years, she has brought vibrant, exciting learning experiences to the children of Coal City,” Setrini-Best said to those attending the luncheon.

When Linda Wiesbrook was approached at the Morris Hospital with a bouquet of flowers she thought her boss, Kim Landers, had received the flowers, but much to her surprise they were for her.

“To be described as one of the women of distinction, I’m blown away. It’s one of those moments you don’t expect,” Wiesbrook said.

Setrini-Best said during the presentation that if you asked Wiesbrook what she would do if she couldn’t be a nurse, she wouldn’t have an answer.

“With confidence and a loving hand, Linda has cared for so many people right here in Morris,” Setrini-Best said.

Morris High School announces fall play cast MORRIS – Morris Community High School’s fall play – Arlene Hutton’s “Letters to Sala” – represents the Midwest high school premiere of this production.

The story centers on Sala Garncarz, who was 16 in 1940, the daughter of a rabbi and teacher and the youngest of 11 children in a poor family living in Sosnowiec, Poland, close to the German border, according to a news release from the school.

Sala took her older sister Raizel’s place when she was ordered to report to a Nazi forced labor camp, where six weeks of required labor would stretch to almost five years of slavery. Through letters from family and friends that she managed to hide, “Letters to Sala” tells the story of one young woman’s experiences in the most inhumane and unimaginable of situations.

Sala’s actual letters from the labor camps will be on loan to Morris High School from the New York Public Library. The exhibition has been on tour since 2007.

At the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon performances, attendees can listen to a preshow discussion from a Holocaust survivor, as well as a question and answer period after the performances.

The Holocaust speaker and Sala’s letters are being brought to the community through the Community Foundation of Grundy County, according to the release.

Young Sala will be portrayed by senior Haleigh Zorn, while the elderly Sala is portrayed by senior Jessica Carey.

Sala’s daughter Ann will be portrayed by senior Sophie Gaska, while Sala’s granddaughters, Caroline and Elisabeth will be played by sophomores McKayla Zorn and Janelle Gaska.

BRIEFS MORRIS – State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, and the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce are offering a free paper shredding event for local residents from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 18 outside the Chamber office at 909 Liberty St. in Morris.

Paper documents will be accepted for destruction (up to two boxes a person). Guests are instructed to follow the marked pathway through the parking lot and remain in their vehicle while the documents are unloaded. Parking is available for those who wish to personally watch documents being shredded.

“With the growing threat of identity theft and fraud, it’s more important than ever for families to properly dispose of sensitive documents,” Anthony said in a news release. “I am pleased to offer this free shredding event in partnership with our friends at the Grundy County Chamber to give families who may not have a personal shredder at home a safe and convenient way to drop off their papers for disposal.”

Kendall County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE) will hold its 16th annual Victorian Tea from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at Cross Lutheran Church on Route 47, Yorkville.

The White Family Singers from Aurora will be at the tea.

The White family consists of the mother, father and 11 children, ages 2 to 20. They have been singing for about 10 years, mostly at family and church events, and for nursing homes.

This fundraiser, along with the HCE pie and ice cream booth at the Kendall County Fair, helps to fund HCE’s donations to Extension and 4-H in Kendall County, the scholarship for a Kendall County resident, and community educational programs.

MORRIS – It has come down to this.

To avoid missing the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time since 1981-82, the Morris football team must win its final three games. In essence, that makes the final three games of the season playoff games for the Redskins, who begin that quest Friday night as they take their 2-4 record to Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Kaneland.

The Knights, who also have built a perennial playoff powerhouse, sit with the same 2-4 record and will be playing for their postseason lives, as well.

It promises to be a tough battle. While Morris lost a 42-0 decision to DeKalb last week,

Kaneland came within 37-34 against the unbeaten Barbs the previous week.

Morris coach Alan Thorson hopes his club has a short memory.

“This is the start of the playoffs for us,” he said. “It is for Kaneland, too. We are really two pretty similar teams in similar positions. All but one of their losses have been by a touchdown or less, and, with the expception of the DeKalb game, so are ours.

“We told the kids the minute we got back to school Friday night, that game (the vs.

DeKalb game) was over. If we want to continue our season in the playoffs, we have to win out.”

The only team ahead of Morris was the Yorkville JV squad, and Morris finished ahead of Westmont, which is stateranked in Class 1A. Wantland finished third in 16:27, while Seneca’s Ross McCormick won the race with a time of 16:01.9. Born: Oct. 19, 1936; in Morris, IL Died: Sept. 27, 2014; in Joliet, IL Jean Ann Robinson, 77, of Morris, passed away early Saturday morning, September 27, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center in Joliet with her loving family by her side.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morris with Rev. Dr. Roy Backus officiating. Inurnment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Saturday,

October 11, from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.

She was born October 19, 1936, in Morris, the daughter of James F. and Ruth (Wills) Holderman.

She received her education in the schools of Pine Bluff, Coal City and graduated from Morris Community High School with the class of 1954.

Later she received her bachelors degree from the University of Illinois in Champaign and her masters degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

She married Wilfred “Bill” Robinson on January 24, 1957, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morris.

Jean Ann was for many years the church secretary at First Presbyterian Church, the family farm

manager, a self employed free lance columnist for environmental concerns and Grundy County Solid Waste Coordinator.

She is survived by her husband, Bill of Morris; three children, Alissa(Mike) McCormick of Wilmington, Fred (Benita) Robinson and David Robinson both of Morris; three grandchildren, Hayley and Eric Robinson both of Morris and Hadley McCormick of Wilmington; three sisters, Janet (Rodney) Nunemaker of Randolph, New Jersey, Ramona Lanier of Sycamore and Roberta(Bill) Allen of Sycamore; one brother, Honorable Judge James F.(Paula) Holderman of LaGrange; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were

her parents; one brother, David in infancy; one brother-in-law, Jerry Lanier.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, DAR, BPW Club, former 4-H leader, served on the Conservation Congress and the Illinois Michigan Canal Corridor Association.

“They didn’t call me or nothing. They didn’t call me, period, pretty much,” said Hester, who will face the Bears on Sunday in Atlanta. “I didn’t hear from Chicago. They didn’t say they were going to re-sign me. All I know is that they were going to go in a different direction.”

Hester said it bothered him to not get a chance to stay with the Bears – “If you’ve been with a team for over six, seven, eight years, if you’ve been there for a long time, it bothers you when your contract is up and the team doesn’t even come to offer you anything” – but Hester also admitted last month on NFL Network that he wasn’t as happy in his final years in Chicago.

As for Sunday, Hester is looking forward to facing his former teammates.

“It’s going to be fun, kind of exciting. So used to going against these guys in prac-

tice. It’ll be the first time for me against them live,” he said.

“Been around these guys for a long time, so it’s kind of like playing against your brother.

That’s the way it kind of seems now.”

Many Bears fans miss Hester, especially considering the Bears’ woes in the return game, but he is more than content in his new home.

“Sometimes things are meant for a new start, a fresh start. Kind of like a relationship,” Hester said. “Sometimes you might be fortunate when the relationship is not meant (to be) and you just move on.

That’s the situation I’m now in. I’m in a relationship where I’m happy now.”

Believe it or not, that was the gist of a press day in the nation’s capital this past week. A group of Catholics, most who probably vote Republican – in some cases primarily if not exclusively because of abortion – gathered to support a new health care sharing ministry, Christ Medicus Foundation CURO. Under Obamacare, these cost-sharing communities – religious believers who sign up to share health care costs – are not subject to Obamacare’s individual and abortion-drug, contraception, sterilization mandate.

CURO is the first Catholic health care sharing ministry in the United States. It is able to exist because of a partnership with Samaritan Ministries International.

The team-up represents a “God honoring, Christ-centered, sharing health care” effort, as Samaritan’s Anthony Hopp put it, an attempt to combat not just the affronts to conscience and dignity

Pope Francis often talks about a throwaway society where indifference to the suffering of others has become routine. These health care sharing ministries are efforts to swim against the stream.

Cosmopolitan, the sex-obsessed women’s glossy magazine, also has been making an effort to head in a contrary direction lately, dabbling in political commentary.

But, unlike CMF CURO, the results are less than inspiring, as a recent editorial about a congressional race proved.

Barbara Comstock is a Republican running for Congress in Virginia.

She’s exactly the kind of woman you’d want in politics. She loves her family and her country, knows how Washington works

and takes the responsibilities of government seriously. Were her politics a little different, she’d be the cover gal for women in politics for any magazine.

But Cosmo came out for Comstock’s opponent, John Foust, repeating stale, misleading rhetoric mired in the tired dogma of the sexual revolution and a rigid stance on abortion rights that is out of step with Americans.

But the over-the-top nature of so much of this might just prove to be an opportunity to see real people with authentic ideas and visions for the future. Another candidate in Virginia, Ed Gillespie, who is running for Senate, has made it a point to talk about the “dignity of work” in his stump speech, focusing on his economic plan to help people find self-worth and value in helping to transform the world through labor.

Pope Francis has pointed to the problem of youth unemployment, and he also talks about seeing the unborn child and the

elderly as Christ Himself.

This is why even nonreligious Americans might welcome a development like CMF CURO teaming up with Samaritan. A culture where doctors and patients have a relationship, where cost-sharing is rooted in a belief in common brotherhood, where people feel the need to serve, is the kind of culture where charity is fostered and nourished.

It makes increasingly possible the idea of a world where no one’s pain is ignored.

Rallying around human dignity in policy and practice – and yes, even politics – is the way out of a culture of indifference and inhumanity. And people in and outside the Beltway are showings us the way.

Instead, suppose West leads a low heart, East wins with his eight and returns a low heart.

South ruffs, unblocks his two club honors, and leads a trump. With the favorable breaks, the contract cannot be touched.

Yes, South could easily face worse distribution, but even so, it is worth going for the game bonus.

Lately I haven’t been able to become sexually aroused.

What could be wrong?

DEAR READER: Sex is complicated. You probably already know that. Sexual desire surely resides in the head, but other parts of the body can affect desire as well. In particular, the genital organs communicate with the brain. Likewise, the brain communicates with the genital organs.

Desire in the brain causes changes in the pelvic organs. Perceiving these changes can, in turn, enhance sexual desire.

There is a condition called sexual arousal disorder. Normally, a woman becomes aroused through thoughts and fantasies, touch, or both. In response, blood flows to her pelvic area. This causes the genital tissues to swell and the vagina to moisten in readiness for sexual activity. With sexual arousal disorder, your mind desires sex, but your body does not follow suit.

Many things can cause or contribute to this disorder.

Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism and diabetes can dampen sex drive.

Medications, including antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs, can have sexual side effects. Emotional and psychological issues also can profoundly affect sexual desire – and performance.

Sexual arousal disorder in women often occurs after menopause, when estrogen levels drop. This can cause vaginal tissue to thin and secretions to decrease. Sex may become painful, resulting in less arousal. But even if sex is not painful, a woman may notice the absence of the pelvic changes that occur with increased blood flow and vaginal moistening. That can put a further damper on desire.

What treatments are available to improve sexual desire and sexual function?

For years, drug companies have been in search of a “female Viagra.” The idea

Another issue might be vaginal dryness. For many women, over-the-counter lubricants and vaginal moisturizers are enough to relieve vaginal dryness. If these products don’t help, low-dose vaginal estrogen products are available by prescription. They come as creams, tablets or rings inserted into the vagina.

These raise estrogen levels in the vagina, making vaginal tissue thicker and more elastic. Unlike higher-dose hormone replacement therapy, they do not significantly increase blood levels of estrogen.

The most widely studied treatment for boosting female sexual desire is testosterone. Most studies have found a benefit.

Even though testosterone is described as a “male” hormone, women also make testosterone – but in much lower amounts than men.

It does stimulate desire in women as well as men, along with arousal and orgasm.

Another option, if your problem is not just physical, is sex therapy.

A therapist can help you identify thoughts, feelings and behaviors that might be interfering with your sexual enjoyment. A therapist will also help you communicate your needs and enhance feelings of intimacy between you and your partner.

A loss of sexual desire and function after menopause is reasonably common. Fortunately, there are therapies that can help.

Grundy County hosts domestic abuse awareness event in Morris

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Sarah Anderson is not scared to show her face or tell her story. She is brave, but it took a tremendous amount of effort to get there.

For more than 13 years, she was beaten, abused and manipulated by her long-time boyfriend and the father of her child. Her self-esteem was shattered, and her life was put in danger on more than one occasion.

“I wish every day that I had been able to find the strength earlier in my life to leave him, but I cannot go back and change that now,” she said.

But Anderson did find strength, and Wednesday night, she exercised her courageous spirit by sharing her story with a crowd of strangers during the Grundy County Take Back the Night domestic violence awareness event.

Through her speech, she shined a light on the dark, ugly details of domestic abuse.

Now a survivor, Anderson refuses to stay silent about her struggle so that other victims may find the strength and support they need to break the cycle of violence.

“I hope to be able to help other women understand that they can walk away,” she said.

Bringing attention to domestic violence was the purpose of Wednesday’s event, which also featured speeches from Megan Miller of the Grundy County Groundwork program and Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland.

Everything at the event was drenched in the color purple, the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness month.

The crowd of guests were provided purple ribbons to wear so they too could start conversations about domestic abuse.

“Wear those, and when people ask, make a point to tell

them why you’re wearing that,” Helland said.

According to Helland, Grundy County had 108 reported cases of domestic violence in 2013.

That statistic is not entirely reflective of the problem, however, as innumerable cases go unreported, Helland said.

For Anderson, fear, low self-esteem and hope are what kept her from alerting police.

“I was once asked if I take any responsibility for what happened, and I do. I take the responsibility that I had hope.

Hope that he would change and be the man I thought I once loved,” she said.

Breaking Away, the Groundwork program and other local resources were integral in getting Anderson to leave her abuser, she said.

Through those organizations, she and her son were provided with counseling, legal advice and a safe place to stay.

Helland said the Breaking Away program helped more than 20 victims last year.

“Vigilance and education in every part of the community is needed to stop domestic violence before it starts,” Helland said.

Women of Distinction highlights standouts in the community

All three were surprised they would be chosen for the award, which is given to women who have made a difference in Grundy County and who are role models as leaders in their fields and communities.

The 2014 recipients – Judy Miller, Lori Watson and Linda Wiesbrook – were honored at a luncheon Wednesday at Chapin’s East in Minooka.

“My flabber was gasted,” said Judy Miller, a former Morris Community High School English teacher.

“Sometimes, when there isn’t a word for something you just have to make one up.”

Michael Engelhardt, a former Millikin University professor, was commissioned to create an original five-minute contemporary gospel style piece for the combined choir at Morris Community High School to sing.

and she’s excited to pass that on to students at Morris Community High School.

“It’s an opportunity that was placed in our laps. It’s not very often a composer contacts a choir to write for them,” she said.

She said it also gives students the opportunity to learn a song from the composer instead of how the choir director interprets the piece.

“The song will be about togetherness, cooperation and unity,” Engelhardt said. “The great thing about this is it can only be performed for the first time once and the kids will get to experience that.”

Napolitano said the students will debut the piece at their spring concert and will sing it this spring when they go to San Antonio on a choir trip for spring break.

She said the choir boosters are raising $1,500 toward the purchase of the original music piece and will host an adult-only bowling night fundraiser on Nov. 1 at Echo Lanes in Morris.

There will be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and surprise raffles at the event.

Numerous flu clinics being held in Grundy County MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The Grundy County Health Department will hold numerous flu clinics this month.

An adult-only flu clinic for ages 19 and older will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday

at the health department, 1320 Union St., Morris. The department will have a high dose flu vaccine for ages 65 and older. Medicare will pay for high dose flu vaccine with Medicare Part B, or the cost is $50 without Medicare. Also available is the Quadrivalent

flu vaccine for ages 19 and older. Quadrivalent flu vaccine protects against four strains of the flu. The cost is $35 cash or check or $3.90 co-pay cash or check with your Medicaid card. Bring your Medicare and Medicaid cards to the clinic.

MORRIS – With the Ottawa, LaSalle and Grundy County enterprise zone set to end in 2016, local leaders are taking necessary steps to replace it.

In Grundy County, a handful of new industrial properties could be incorporated into the replacement zone. Those properties include land near Brisbin Road, the Coal City logistics park and Aux Sable Liquid Products, according Nancy Norton Ammer, CEO of the Grundy Economic Development Council.

The enterprise zone program was created in 1982 to stimulate economic growth and revitalization in depressed areas of the state, according to the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity. The zones guarantee sales tax abatements, and local taxing districts are free to negotiate further tax incentives within the stimulus areas.

But all of Illinois’ 97 enterprise zones must be replaced thanks to a change in state law. Instead of being renewed or extended, all the zones will end with an opportunity to be reborn through a new application process.

Grundy County’s portion of the zone is about three square miles, said Doug Pryor, vice president of the GEDC. Many of the same companies would be included in the new enterprise area, Pryor said, including LyondellBasell, Akzo No-

bel and others.

“They took away the opportunity to extend them. The previous zone is done, and we are creating an entirely new one,” Pryor said.

“I think the state saw this as a way of refreshing the program,” he continued.

The DCEO is only accepting up to 49 new zones in its first round of applications, which means almost half of the existing zones won’t make the cut.

There is a chance Grundy County’s zone will be excluded, but Pryor said that is unlikely.

“We’ve had a very successful zone. We’ve used it well and had a lot of job creation,” he said.

The existing enterprise zone has been around for more than two decades, said Ben Wilson, community development director at the North Central Illinois Council of Governments.

Wilson is helping Grundy, Ottawa and LaSalle County compile and submit their enterprise zone application before Dec. 31 of this year.

Wilson said the new enterprise zone would retain the same sales tax abatement as the current area.

Those interested in learning more about the proposed zone can attend a public hearing Tuesday at Ottawa City Hall, 301 W. Madison St., Ottawa. Wilson said they will go over the incentives offered and have maps of the zone’s proposed boundaries.

Goodwin receives Retain statewide honor MORRIS – Paula Goodwin, coordinator of the Grundy County No Tolerance Task Force, has been named a 2014 Prevention Leadership Award recipient by the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association.

The annual award was given by IADDA during its annual conference at the Lisle Hilton, Sept. 3 and 4, to recognize excellence in substance abuse prevention, according to a news release.

This award is presented to individuals who have brought public attention to the need for prevention and who have fostered the growth and development of the Illinois prevention movement.

Goodwin has served as NTTF coordinator since 1995, working with educators, youth, police, health department officials and many others to offer programs in the prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse, especially among youth.

Her activities include organizing meetings that foster communication between schools and law enforcement, providing tobacco cessation services, organizing alcohol server and seller training, and assisting schools with prevention activities for youth.

At this year’s Grundy County Corn Festival, Goodwin was involved in presenting the “In Plain Sight” Bedroom on the courthouse lawn as a way of

JOLIET – Katlyn Kelty of Coal City said she’s honored for the chance to work with a wellknown chef.

“It’s something I can’t wait to do,” said Kelty, 22.

She is one of five students from the Joliet Junior College culinary arts program who will assist Food Network star Chef Robert Irvine when he appears at 8 p.m. Friday at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet.

However, what those exact onstage duties will be are still a mystery.

That’s typical Irvine, said Chef Michael McGreal, JJC culinary arts program department chair. Irvine never repeats the same show. This way, he added, patrons can’t say, “Oh, I’ve seen this before.”

McGreal does know this isn’t a cooking-demo show. Rather, Irvine will entertain in a comedic and energetic fashion, using cooking as the vehicle. Students will serve Irvine on stage, much as nurses serve surgeons, McGreal said.

“In some ways, he’s larger than life to the students,” McGreal said. “It’s like meeting a movie star and then going to work with him for the day. ...

But they will see that he is a very hands-on, down-to-earth kind of guy.”

Irvine may show new techniques to fillet a fish, whip up a restaurant-quality meal in 30 minutes or bring audience members on stage to participate, McGreal said.

When Irvine appeared at the Rialto in 2013, Javier Reyes of Shorewood said one of his friends prepared extra helpings of Irvine’s culinary creations and then served them to the audience.
