‘Shop It Forward’ starts Saturday More online

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The phrase “pay it forward” means to respond to a person’s kindness to oneself by being kind to someone else, according to OxfordDictionaries.com.

That idea extends to the Morris Retail Association’s “Shop It Forward” campaign.

If someone spends $10, as early as Saturday through Oct. 17, in one of 21 participating downtown Morris retailers, you can unlock savings at each stop thereafter.

To activate a 20 percent savings, customers are asked to provide a receipt to the second participating retailer they choose to make a purchase at, indicating they’ve spent at least $10. Every stop at participating retailers after that also will be eligible for a 20 percent savings, as long as shoppers provide receipts.

Some stores have certain restrictions, however. For example, a jewelry store might limit the discount to silver, Athletic Outfitters owner Karen Gronski said. But customers can return to buy from the same store multiple times, she said.

remains to be seen how it will grow. But Kerr said last year was a big success, as retailers noticed shoppers going from store to store more often than usual.

A shopping Saturday could bring more people from out of town and into Morris in coming years, Kerr said. Downtown Morris was ranked in August by OnlyInYourState. com as the fourth-most beautiful, charming small town in Illinois, she pointed out.

“We’d like to think the Morris Retail Association has played a part in that,” Kerr said. “It’s truly a huge honor.”

Being in business 27 years, in addition to being a Morris Retailer Association member, Gronski said it takes a lot of collaborative work to keep downtown Morris as attractive as it is.

“The hard work keeps our downtown vibrant,” Gronski said.

Crowd unites to raise awareness of domestic violence, promote positive relationships

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Tina Frasco warned her daughter, Francee Wolf, over and over that her boyfriend wouldn’t stay faithful and had a history of domestic violence.

But Frasco said Wednesday evening during Guardian Angel Community Services’ “Take Back The Night” event that to this day, she never expected her daughter to be murdered – and herself left blind in one eye – at the hands of a man they both knew since the couple were kids.

“Now one is dead,” Frasco said on the Grundy County Courthouse lawn in front of about 50 people. “And the other is in prison.”

Frasco, of Spring Valley, was the featured speaker of the event, which is aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence.

Francee Wolf would be 43. She was active in school, well-liked and popular. Wolf’s ex-boyfriend was a handful of years older than her, but Frasco, as is typical in a small town, knew the family history.

“I told her he’s hit his exmother-in-law, and he’s threatened his ex-wife,” Frasco said.

“He always had two relationships at once.”

Wolf defended him then and believed his account of why those incidents happened, Frasco said. At some point, Frasco said her daughter began to realize she was too good for him.

The last few months of the couple’s relationship was on and off. On Easter of 1994, he accused Wolf of stealing. When Frasco asked a police officer why he believed the ex-boyfriend, he replied that the man seemed like a nice guy.

The ex-boyfriend began stalking her at work and waited for her at her home. He began visiting Frasco and telling stories about his fondness for her daughter. He even hugged

She found out during the murder trial.

Now, 21 years later, Frasco said she chose to carry on, exhibiting her love for her daughter with a passion for

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said there were 115 victims of domestic violence in Grundy County in 2014, or what amounts to nearly one every three days. For each of those victims, attendees of “Take

Back The Night” released a lavender balloon to the sky.

“Victims often suffer in silence with little or no guidance,” Helland said. “Studies show that children who witness or are victims of domestic violence exhibit behavioral, social or emotional stress.”

Mary Lee Howard, president of the Morris Woman’s Club, said domestic violence affects the whole family.

“My mother was a victim,” she said. “In those days, police wouldn’t get involved. It was just considered a family problem.”

Times have changed for the better, she said, but there’s still a long way to go. Howard said the reason she raises awareness is because of her

own experiences and hopes that victims in Grundy County and everywhere else speak up.

“You have to get help,” she said. “Don’t stick it out.”

There were displays and informational materials on hand. The “Empty Shoes” display held the shoes of domestic violence murder victims, such as Valerie Harris of Coal City, who was murdered by her husband Dec. 31, 2006, as she was on the phone with 911.

To further raise awareness, attached to the shoe display table were customized yellow T-shirts titled “The Clothesline Project” with phrases such as “true love is not control,” “love should not hurt” and “I am not a human punching bag.”

The fundraiser also will support the Cure It Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting childhood cancer by funding research and providing resources.

Visitors who come to the fundraiser can purchase hot cocoa and bake sale items.

The fundraiser will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 3 French Hens Market, which is held along the I&M Canal at 123 W. Illinois Ave., Morris.

Morris library to hold DOWNTOWN MORRIS RETAIL ASSOCIATION BUY LOCAL – SAVE LOCAL book, decorations sale

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Unique books, Christmas decorations and 90-year-old record albums will be among the items on sale at the Morris Area Public Library’s Used Books and Holiday Decorations Sale.

The selection of used items are a result of donated books, out-of-circulation books and decorations the library is selling after cleaning out its closets, adult programming coordinator Sarah Fisher said.

“We have a wide assortment of materials,” she said.

“We have a plethora of books, so I decided maybe it would be fun to have a giant book sale.”

The sale will be from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 23 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 24 in the library auditorium at 604 Liberty St. Many of the books are coming through the library’s weeding-out process, Fisher said.

The library monitors how often books and other materials are checked out. Those books that fall below a popularity level are picked off the shelves and taken out of the system.

“Most libraries go through this,” Fisher said.

The library also accepts donations of books and other materials. Anyone wishing to donate for the sale must drop

“Sometimes those are duplicates or too damaged to put on the shelf.”

In addition to newer books, Fisher said some donors have cleaned out their family collections, leading to some old and unique books.

Someone even donated several record albums from the 1920s and ’30s.

Fisher said excess holiday decorations for every season also will be available.

The proceeds from the book sale will be split three ways between the children’s, teens and adult departments to be used for more programming.

JJC trustees welcome new board members JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees became full again Tuesday.

Trustees voted to have Patricia Deiters and Alicia Morales fill the seats vacated by former chairwoman Tina Markley and trustee Barb Adams, who resigned unexpectedly at an August workshop meeting where Markley criticized board members before walking away.

Adams left with no explanation.

At Tuesday’s meeting, trustees unanimously approved of appointing Deiters to the board.

All trustees – except Trustee Maureen Broderick – voted to approve Morales’ appointment.

The new trustees were sworn in by Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich.

“This is an honor for me, for my family, for my community.

I am deeply humbled,” Morales said.

Deiters said she was “excited to get started.”

Broderick said she voted against appointing Morales because she “felt we had candidates that had better qualifications and no agendas.”

JJC Faculty Union President Robert Marcink said he was pleased to see the “table filled again.”

“It was a lot of work and I congratulate you on getting it done and getting it done quickly,” he said. “That’s important

because obviously we have a lot of business that needs to be done at the college and we can’t do it without you.”

In the past year, JJC has moved forward on large-scale projects such as the Multipurpose Facility construction, Romeoville campus expansion and City Center building interior work.

Deiters, a JJC alumna, and Morales, a former JJC financial aid adviser, were two of three new trustees appointed to the board after a series of resignations since July. Former board chairman Jeff May resigned in July for health reasons, followed by Markley and Adams in August.

Since their resignations, trustees accepted applications from about 50 candidates and interviewed dozens of them through several rounds. Among those who applied were former Channahon Mayor Joe Cook and Lincoln-Way District 210 board member Christopher McFadden.

After reorganizing the board, remaining trustees on Sept. 8 appointed former trustee Dan O’Connell, a Joliet attorney, to May’s seat. Deiters was one of the finalists for May’s seat.

The seats for Morales, Deiters and O’Connell will be up for election in 2017. Trustee Michael O’Connell – who was appointed in 2009 – plans to not run again and his seat will be up for an election the same year.

Famous Romanian lawyer dies at 83

By ALISON MUTLER The Associated Press BUCHAREST, Romania – Paula Iacob, a Romanian lawyer whose cases ranged from unsuccessfully defending a dictator’s son to saving a killer street dog from being put down, has died. She was 83.

Iacob died Tuesday, a few days after suffering a stroke, lawyer Daniel Ionascu said Wednesday.

She became a celebrity as a level-headed advocate amid the public hysteria surrounding controversial cases, and made regular television ap-

pearances. Iacob made her name in 1990 when she unsuccessfully defended the late Nicolae Ceausescu’s flamboyant son, Nicu Ceausescu, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 1992 for misuse of funds during his father’s rule.

“He is an innocent man,” she said in his defense. “His misfortune was having the name Ceausescu.”

Nicu Ceausescu was released from prison on health grounds and died of liver cirrhosis in Vienna in 1996.

Iacob successfully represented the street dog, Bosquito, who had mauled a Japanese

businessman in 2006. The man bled to death in minutes after the dog severed an artery in his thigh. Iacob, representing an animal rights’ group, argued that the man may have suffered a heart attack before the dog struck. The dog was adopted by a family in Germany in 2007.

In the communist era, Iacob collaborated with the Securitate secret police in the 1950s and 1970s using the pseudonyms “Gabriela” and “Ioana.” She insisted that she had tried not to harm anyone in her written reports. Securitate files revealed she was paid in

flowers, cakes and money.

Another of her attention-grabbing cases was representing a notorious loan shark who kept lions and bears in the garden of his Bucharest home.

Asked why he had violated terms his parole, she explained that “he went to see his lover.”

“His wife’s in prison,” she said. “If men that cheat on their wives need to be arrested, we wouldn’t have enough prisons for them.”

Iacob is survived by her husband and their daughter.

She will be buried Thursday at the Bellu cemetery in Bucharest.

Pop, country singer Billy Joe Royal dies at age 73 The ASSOCIATED PRESS NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Billy Joe Royal, a pop singer who popularized the song “Down in the Boondocks,” and crossed over into country music, has died.

He was 73 years old.

His agent, Brent Taylor, said the singer died at his home Tuesday in Morehead City, North Carolina.

The Georgia-born singer debuted on Columbia Records with “Down in the Boondocks” in 1965, which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. But he struggled to match his initial success with his subsequent records and starting in the late 1980s, he reinvented himself as a country singer.

He was known for songs like “I’ll Pin a Note on Your Pillow,” ‘’Tell it Like it is,” and “Till I Can’t Take it Anymore.” He made the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1988.

Big game on deck for Morris vs. Kaneland

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – When it gets to this time of the football season, every game is a big one.

None will come bigger for Morris than Friday’s game against Kaneland – which also will be homecoming and senior night for the Redskins.

The varsity game is scheduled to kick off at 7:15 p.m.

Both teams enter the game with 3-3 records and neither wants to add a fourth loss to the ledger and begin fighting for their playoff lives next week. Both teams also are coming through Northern Illinois Big 12 East losses, with Morris falling, 35-21, to DeKalb last week, and Kaneland falling, 35-7, to Sycamore.

“We are two pretty evenly matched teams,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “If you look at the conference right now, aside from DeKalb (which is 5-1), everyone else is 3-3. Someone is going to get left out of the playoffs, and we don’t want it to be us.

“I am sure this is going to be another battle with Kaneland, and we have had some great games with them over the years. We know Kaneland isn’t going to drive all the way down here and just hand it to us. We are going to have to play well.”

Penalties at inopportune times were the theme in Morris’ first two losses of the season, but the Redskins officially did not have any penalties in Friday night’s game against DeKalb. The one flag thrown against them was declined.

That’s a trend Thorson would like to see continue.

“If the team that showed up last week, especially in the second half, shows up for us again this week, then I like our chances,” he said. “If we don’t make the key mental mistakes, I like our chances against anybody. That seems strange to say with a 3-3 record, but I really believe that if we don’t beat ourselves, this team can play with any team out there.”

PLANO – Both the Morris boys and girls cross country teams continued their successful seasons Tuesday, as both took first place at the Ross Greiter Invitational.

The boys finished the nineteam race with 26 points, ahead of Yorkville (68), Sandwich (88), Westmont (116) and Seneca (156). Zach Chapman was the top finisher for Morris, taking second on the 3-mile course with a time of 16:45.8. Zach Guzman finished fourth in 16:58.9, while Al Alvarez was fifth in 17:05.9. Jordan Olson took seventh with a time of 17:07.9, while Max Dudley was 13th in 17:42.1.

For Seneca, Christopher Collet was the top finisher, taking third in 16:48.2, followed by Zach Rivett (28th, 18:57.6), Kole Gallick (38th, 19:49.1), Joey Thomas (43rd, 20:17.1) and Calvin Wilson (56th, 21:43.5).

In the girls race, Morris finished first among seven teams with 50 points, while Seneca was second with 56.

The Redskins’ top runner was Mya Shannon, who took third in 20:00. The next three Morris runners finished within a half-second of each other as Madi Mayberry was 11th in 21:17.9, Meghan Smith was

12th in 21:18.2 and Bridget Landers was 13th in 21:18.4.

Sabrina Baftiri was 15th with a time of 21:19.8.

For Seneca, Eva Bruno finished second overall with a time of 19:05.5, followed by Sarah Virgo (6th, 20:04.2), Carina Collet (8th, 20:43.4), Sarah Cameron (17th, 21:25.7) and Emily Misener (27th, 22:28.8).

However, they have allowed 173 points, which is the most of any team in the conference. Morris has allowed the fewest points in the conference through six games with 97, while scoring 141.

“They are a spread team and they have some good players,” Thorson said about Kaneland. “Their quarterback (Jake Marczuk) can throw pretty well and he will run it, too. They also have a freshman running back, Jonathan Alstott, that’s (former NFL star) Mike Alstott’s nephew, and he runs pretty well. They will spread it out and run a lot of stuff out of a lot of different formations.

Our defense is going to have to be prepared for anything.”

Raanta disappointed name is not on Cup

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Antti Raanta couldn’t hide his disappointment that the Blackhawks left his name off the Stanley Cup. “I heard that from my friends,” said Raanta, back in Chicago already as the New York Rangers’ backup goaltender. “I didn’t know what to think about that. There’s a number of how many names you can put on there. It’s not there, so it’s not there. I know I was part of the team, so that’s good enough. What are you going to do?”

The Hawks were allotted 52 names to put on the Cup, but they chose not to include Raanta – who dressed in more than half the games but lost his backup job to Scott Darling before the playoffs began – according to the NHL. Instead, the Hawks petitioned to have Daniel Carcillo and Joakim Nordstrom put on the Cup, neither of whom met the criteria of playing in at least 41 games (or one Stanley Cup Final game).

Whether it had anything to do with the controversial story in a Finnish magazine that quoted Raanta as saying he rooted against the Hawks in the playoffs is anybody’s guess.

But Raanta again clarified his comments, saying he was only bitter and frustrated for a moment after being recalled as a Black Ace. At the time, he wanted to stay in Rockford and play for the IceHogs during their playoff run.

“I hope everybody understands what I was trying to mean with that,” Raanta said.

“I didn’t want to say anything bad about the Hawks. I understand the fans can be little disappointed in me. But hopefully they understand I wasn’t

thinking that the whole playoff time. It was one hour in one day. When you’re frustrated, you have a lot of things going on in your mind. Hopefully everybody understands that and hopefully after this night everybody can forget that.”

Raanta got a pretty sweet consolation prize, though.

Hawks vice president Al MacIsaac presented him with his gaudy championship ring before Wednesday’s morning skate.

“It’s gorgeous, it’s beautiful,” Raanta said. “I don’t know if I should put it on my ring [finger] because it’s so heavy. I don’t know if I can carry it. It’s unbelievable.”

Lost in translation

Quenneville was asked if he uses Artem Anisimov or Viktor Tikhonov to communicate with Artemi Panarin, who knows very little English.

“Either one,” Quenneville said. “Whoever’s closer.”

Jonathan Toews said the Hawks are trying to do their part, too.

“We know he’s got a little ways to go as far as learning English, but we’re trying our best to maybe learn a few Russian words to show that that effort is somewhat mutual,” Toews said. “He’s a happy kid, he’s always smiling, you can tell he’s having fun. He wants to be a part of the chatter in the room even though he doesn’t understand what’s going on most of the time.”

Ville Pokka’s recall on Tuesday was merely a salary-cap procedure, designed to give the Hawks as much cap space as possible by putting Michal Rozsival on long-term injured reserve.

My idea was to use her address book/Christmas card list for addresses and then print a copy of her obituary with a short message thanking those friends for their letters, cards and support during her life.
