MORRIS – Year after year, Morris Community High School students have taken the ACT. But there’s a chance future classes of Illinois high school students might be required take the SAT instead. For now, it appears to be a slim chance.

The District 101 Curriculum Committee was made aware, in a meeting Tuesday evening, of the possibility the Illinois State Board of Education could take bids from both the ACT and SAT for rights to administer the test throughout the state if the budget stalemate is solved.

“It could happen,” District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said. “We want to make you aware of it. We asked, but couldn’t get an answer on when a bidding timeline might be given.”

Morris High School Principal Kelly Hussey said a bidding battle would happen only if the state agrees on a budget and decides there’s enough money to fund a statewide test. This

would mean a return to state funding of a junior year test that universities use in evaluating students prior to admission.

“You can bet that both [the ACT and SAT] organizations will do everything they can to convince legislators their test is the best choice if the state decides to fund a test,” Hussey said.

Morris High School started taking the ACT through state funds 15 years ago, as the ACT won a contract with the state to administer the test statewide, Hussey said. This contract surprised many, but soon Colorado was on board. The number of states administering the ACT shot up to 25 states at one point, he said.

In 2014, the state decided to no longer fund the ACT. In June, District 101 agreed to fund the ACT for every student in their junior year, as well as make it a graduation requirement. District 101’s stance to continue administering the ACT even as the state no longer funds it is echoed throughout the state.

There are big philosophical differences in the structure of the test, Hussey said, and it would be a huge paradigm shift to convert the entire district to preparing for the SAT rather than the ACT. To that end, Halloran said Superintendents seem to be hoping that if the state were to fund a test, it’d be the ACT – a staple of the Midwest and what public Midwestern universities typically look for, Hussey said.

“Different Superintendent organizations in the state are asking for the chance to have a choice in which test their respective district takes,” Halloran said.

But for now, District 101 will continue its plan to fund the ACT for all juniors, fresh off of three straight years with composite scores above the national average.

“I still think its right thing to do,” Halloran said. “We know the value of it and what it’s done for the kids and what it’s done for school.”

Herb Wyeth finishes rebuilding 1934 Chevy Sedan Delivery in time for last Morris Cruise Night

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Herb Wyeth will take his new ride Saturday to the last 2015 Morris Cruise Night.

Wyeth, of Morris and founder of the Cruise Night, is well-known for his shiny and sparkling 1937 Ford, but things have changed. After selling the Ford, Wyeth purchased a 1934 Chevy Sedan Delivery that he has finished fixing up just in time for downtown fall fun.

“I’m very excited about the new vehicle,” said his wife, Deb Wyeth. “The other car was over the top. This car we can throw our chairs, suitcases and tent into, and go and have fun.”

The sleek, tuxedo-black delivery vehicle has been put back together and hit the road for the first time last week.

The inaugural drive showed Herb had a few more tweaks to go, but nothing that would keep him out of the car show.

Herb purchased the Chevy from World of Wheels Director Harry Willet, who originally bought the vehicle to “flip.”

When Herb announced his car was sold, he found out the Chevy was available. Its transformation from a teal color to black already had begun, thanks to Willet’s body shop and car painter Christian Sylvester.

While Wyeth typically builds his own cars from start to finish, his wife said they couldn’t go two years without a car, so the Chevy fit perfectly into their timeline to get back on the road.

John Mayer, of Ogden Top and Trim in Berwyn, already had installed the unique leather upholstery that Wyeth said reminds him of a new baseball mitt.

Herb said he’s worked every possible waking hour to get the car ready and added the details he wanted. And while it won’t be perfect, it

will be at Cruise Night for people to see.

He changed the manual transmission to automatic and replaced the existing gauges with chrome gauges to add the shine he envisioned.

“The car has three colors, the interior color, black and

shiny,” Herb said.

Because of the high back end and tiny window, a rearview mirror didn’t really help when backing up, so Herb has added a rear-view camera and a screen sits where the rearview mirror belongs. Additional mirrors are being added higher up on the door.

“They did a lot of work up front before I got it,” Herb said. “I’ve just made changes to make it my own.”

To see Herb’s car and other classics, car enthusiasts can go to the last Morris Cruise Night on Saturday in downtown Morris.

As always, there will be a nonprofit beneficiary of the event. October’s charity is We Care of Grundy County.

MORRIS – A group of 10 to 15 people was ready Monday night to hear the Morris City Council’s discussion of a possible tattoo and body piercing business near Morris Hospital.

But the group left the Morris Municipal Services Facility when the council voted to table the issue until its next meeting, which is scheduled for Oct. 19.

Morris City Attorney Scott Belt recommended postponing the discussion because both Morris Hospital and an attorney for a nearby property owner presented a stack of information over the weekend, and there wasn’t enough time to review it.

This followed last week’s discussion of more than 90

minutes during a Morris Planning Commission public hearing.

The proposed location for the establishment is in an area classified as Business 3: Commercial District at 1368 N. Liberty St. The commission voted, 3-2-1, to recommend the tattoo parlor for a conditional use permit to operate in the location.

Morris Hospital and two nearby property owners, Brian Barkley and Shawn Hornsby, spoke out last week against the business opening at its proposed location because they believe it is out of the character of the neighborhood.

They suggested Erik Sieczynski, who hopes to open the tattoo parlor, pursue a Route 6 or Route 47 location.

Bean bag contest to help Boy Scouts

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Rainbow Council of the Boy Scouts of America is hosting its first bean bag tournament to support Scouting in the Morris area. The event will offer friendly and healthy competition, providing participants with a fall alternative to the ever-popular summer golf tournament, Ishkote District Executive Jennifer Drozd said.

“It’s a great way to mingle and connect,” she said. “We hope to bring in young professionals of Grundy County.”

The tournament is set for 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Red Cent Pub & Grill, 823 Liberty St., Morris. The cost is $50 for each two-person team, and includes two food tickets, two drink tickets and two raffle tickets.

Channahon OKs path study

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Connecting the village’s south neighborhood bike paths with one that crosses the DuPage River and the Illinois and Michigan Canal has been a goal of Channahon’s for several years, but state funding has been elusive.

Now, on advice that staff and at least two trustees have received, the village will hire an engineering firm to perform a phase one engineering study on the project.

Public Works Director Ed Dolezal was one of those at Monday’s Village Board meeting who said he was told that having the study performed will make it more likely that the project will get funded.

The big problem with eastwest bike and pedestrian paths south of Route 6 in Channahon, according to Village President Missey Schumacher, is crossing the river and canal.

Bridge Street, she said, where a bridge currently exists, is narrow and has no shoulders for bikers and walkers.

A new path would be useful

“We may need to cut something to make this work or we may end up with a budget deficit.”

Widening the bridge or building a separate structure are the options, together with constructing the remainder of the estimated 5,800 feet of the path.

The board approved hiring Strand Associates to conduct phase one engineering for the multi-use path. The study will look at taking the path east from Hunters Crossing subdivision along West Bridge Street to South Fryer Street.

The study will include research on the bridge, the intersection at South McKinley Woods Road, existing wet-

lands, historic preservation, environmental and public concerns, traffic effects and path alignment alternatives. Some design also will be included.

The total study will cost $166,500, and the work will be a capital project for the village.

Before the vote on the funding, trustee Debbie Militello cautioned the expense of the study might mean a cut in a future capital expenditure.

“I think we as a board need to figure out what we may need to cut,” she said. “We may need to cut something to make this work or we may end up with a budget deficit.”

Finance Director Heather Wagonblott said it was difficult to know if the village will be able to afford the entire amount of the project, as preparation of the budget is not yet at that stage.

In the end, trustees decided to award the project for an initial $75,000.

By the time the engineering firm approaches that amount in work, the village will know whether the dollars will be available to complete the study.

Grace Lee Boggs dies at 100 The ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT – Grace Lee Boggs, a longtime activist who was part of the labor, civil rights, black power, women’s rights and environmental justice movements, died Monday at her Detroit home. She was 100.

Boggs and late husband, James Boggs, were involved in advocacy for decades. She helped organize a 1963 march in Detroit by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the November 1963 Grassroots Leadership Conference in Detroit with Malcom X. Her death was announced by the James and Grace Lee Boggs Center to Nurture Community Leadership, which she set up after her husband’s 1993 death.

“Grace died as she lived surrounded by books, politics, people and ideas,” Alice Jennings and Shea Howell, two of her trustees, said in a state-

The daughter of Chinese immigrants, Boggs was born in Rhode Island in 1915 and grew up in New York City.

After receiving a doctorate in philosophy from Bryn Mawr College in 1940, Boggs worked at the University of Chicago’s Philosophy Library.

Boggs moved back to New York to work with socialist theorist C.L.R. James, helping create an offshoot of the Socialist Workers Party that focused on race and poverty.

She moved to Detroit in the 1950s to write for a socialist newspaper. That’s where she met James Boggs, an African-American man who would become her husband and collaborator. In the 1960s, the couple became involved in the black power movement and were known to offer Malcolm X a place to stay.

Arpad Goncz, Hungary’s first president, dies at 93

By PABLO GORONDI The Associated Press BUDAPEST, Hungary – Arpad Goncz, a much-loved Hungarian writer and translator who survived a communist-era life sentence for taking part in the 1956 anti-Soviet revolt and later became Hungary’s first democratically chosen president, died Tuesday at age 93.

Parliament deputy speaker Istvan Hiller announced the death to lawmakers, adding, “he was a legend already during his lifetime.” Lawmakers stood for a minute of silence in honor of his memory. “(Goncz) was loyal all his life to patriotism, democracy and humanity’s European system of values,” said President Janos Ader.

A statement from Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government said Goncz had

“served the renascent Hungarian democracy to the best of his knowledge for 10 years.”

Goncz was charged with treason and sentenced to life in prison by Hungary’s communist authorities for taking part in the abortive anti-Soviet uprising of 1956. He was released in 1963 under a general amnesty aimed at easing tensions with the West.

Goncz was elected to a fiveyear term by the parliament after a free election that ended four decades of communist rule in 1990, and was later re-elected by parliament for a further five years.

Although his post was largely ceremonial, Goncz was credited by many with deftly using his limited powers to enforce Hungary’s fledgling democratic constitution, often putting him at odds with the post-communist government.

Approximately $1,500 was raised during the three-hour event. The Carnagio family donated 20 percent of food sales, which equaled $500, and the football team brought in $1,000 by asking for donations inside and outside of the restaurant.

“The Capodice family had a big impact on sports. Mr. Capodice was my wrestling coach when I wrestled for Minooka Kids Club. I want to raise enough money to shock him,” MCHS varsity football captain Carson Oughton said.

A close friend and math teacher at MCHS said Capodice was a motivator.

“She could motivate kids to do well who didn’t care about school. She motivated kids who weren’t planning on going to

college to go to college. And she motivated us teachers to be as good as she was,” Laura Grozik said.

In their 25 years of marriage, Brian Capodice said travel wasn’t the couple’s priority because they ran a business, she taught, and they raised two kids. But halfway through her three-year battle, he prayed over his wife and asked the Lord to make her healthy to travel, and have time together.

“She did get better for about 10 months, and every three weeks I would pack our bags.

We visited 13 states and even used our passports for the first time and went to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico,” Brian Capodice recalled.

He said when he gets sad every minute of every day, he remembers a special moment the couple shared while on that trip Cabo San Lucas.

“We were snorkeling, and while under the water we held hands, and looked at each other. Our masks filled up with tears because we realized we weren’t supposed to be here,” Brian Capodice said.

Brian Capodice said during his wife’s three-year battle the family didn’t want to any fundraising because the Lord

had blessed their family financially. However, when Joanne Carnagio explained it would be a good way for the community, students and staff to heal, he said it was time.

MCHS math teacher Christina Burgess summed up how most people felt about Mrs.

Cap. “Shawn exudes a sort of energy that goes unmatched and a humor that keeps you belly laughing in even some of the most trying situations. She is the strongest, most beautiful and inspiring woman I have known,” she said.

Coaches, on the other hand, aren’t as fond of Homecoming Week.

There are a lot of fun things to do that are different from the normal routine. Sometimes that carries over onto the playing field, for good or ill.

Morris volleyball coach Taylor Lafond thought about that after the first set Tuesday in a 25-22, 25-13 win over Rochelle.

The Redskins (9-13-2) made many uncharacteristic errors in the first set, allowing Rochelle to come back from a 20-13 deficit and pull to within 23-22, until Morris scored the final two points.

“It’s Homecoming Week,” Lafond said. “In practice, we were kind of goofing around and having fun because, well, it’s Homecoming Week. But in the first game, we were having some errors that we don’t usually have. We had one stretch where we had three straight serving errors, and that’s frustrating.

“We did play a lot cleaner in the second game. I got on them in between games and told them that if they play like this Thursday (at Sycamore), they will wipe the floor with us. Right now, Sycamore is our only conference win, and we know they will be gunning for us. Our focus has to be better.”

Morris got off quickly, taking a 10-5 lead and building that lead to 14-6. Two kills by Janelle Brehm made it 16-8 before a kill by Veronica Johnson made it 20-13. But Rochelle kept coming, using the serve of Paige Myroth to pull to within 23-22. Morris got the serve back on a kill by Calleen Soper and Kaylin Korte ended the game with an ace.

In the second game, things were tight early, with ties at 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 before Morris went on a 6-0 run with Addison Polite at the service line to take a 15-9 lead. Brehm served two

straight aces after getting the serve back with a kill, and another point made it 19-10.

A kill by Korte put Morris ahead, 20-11, and Ashley Hood had two straight aces to make it 23-12.

Korte got the serve back with a kill and then served the final point.

Korte led the Redskins with 12 kills and also had four digs, two aces and two assists.

Brehm chipped in with nine kills, two digs, one block and three aces, while Polite had 12 assists and four digs and Hood had eight assists and two digs.

Soper finished with three kills, while Johnson had a block and a kill.

“I told the girls in the second game to practice now for Thursday,” Lafond said. “We needed to get back to how we should be playing. I thought Calleen Soper stepped up when we needed it at the end of the first game and kept the ball in play.

“Another good thing from this match was that Janelle Brehm looks like she got her swing back. She had been a little bit off the last few matches, but she looked really good tonight. And our setters did a nice job, too. Chicago’s thick skin can shrug off two losses

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com Jonathan Toews sat at his locker stall in the home dressing room at the United Center as the thundering horde of reporters charged his way around 10:30 p.m. on the night of Jan. 18.

They were looking for anger. For frustration. For a broken stick or a flipped-over table or even just an angry glower – just some sign that a second straight going-through-the-motions home loss to a division opponent that was playing its second game in as many nights at the very least bothered the Blackhawks.

But the Hawks don’t operate that way. Haven’t in a while.

Toews was calm, composed.

Spoke in measured tones and measured language. Regular-season losses don’t lead to tirades. Losing streaks don’t lead to desperation. The Hawks are built for the postseason.

They know that. Their opponents know that.

Their fans know that. It’s why they were considered a Stanley Cup favorite as a thirdplace team in the spring. It’s why they’re still considered a Stanley Cup favorite despite

losing several key veterans.

October through March has been more of an obligation than anything. April, May and June – that’s when it counts.

“What this group does incredibly well is, when things don’t look so good day-to-day, maybe we’re going through a tough couple of weeks where we’re not scoring goals, or we’re on the bubble for a playoff spot, I think we always do a great job of looking at the big picture and realizing the potential of our team,” Toews said during the Western Conference final in May. “We don’t need to go on a long stretch of wins and win the Presidents’ Trophy and have the regular season of our lives to have the confidence that we can go the distance in the playoffs. We know we’ve just got to get there.”

He’s right, of course.

But getting there has been a foregone conclusion the last few seasons. It might not be this year. Seven players who played in the decisive Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final are gone – more than one-third of the lineup that won the Hawks’ third championship in six seasons. Names like Patrick Sharp, Brandon Saad, Antoine Vermette, Brad Richards and

Johnny Oduya have been replaced by solid veterans and intriguing rookies such as Artem Anisimov, Trevor Daley, Artemi Panarin and Ryan Garbutt, but there will be growing pains early on. With so many new faces, it’s unrealistic to expect otherwise.

And here’s the rub: The rest of the Central Division – the toughest in the NHL – is as good, if not better, than ever.

All seven teams in the Central had at least 90 points last season, with five making the playoffs and four hitting 100 points or more.

Anxiety disorders result of heredity and life experiences Dear Dr. K: I endured some physical and emotional abuse as a child. Could this explain why I struggle with anxiety as an adult?

Dear Reader: Sigmund Freud and many other psychiatrists thought so. Indeed, exploring the experiences of childhood is an important part of psychoanalysis.

This view did not think childhood experiences could actually make physical changes in brain chemistry, however. Instead, it imagined an unchanged brain that simply was given unusually difficult experiences to cope with.

Today, we have a somewhat different view. We now know childhood is a time when the brain is exceptionally fragile and vulnerable to

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff outside influences. Exposure to extreme stress, such as abuse, neglect, violence in the home or the loss of a loved one, can affect a child’s developing brain. It can impair his or her ability to negotiate emotional bumps in the road later on. Scientists call this toxic stress.

Studies show toddlers who live in unstable families have a strong stress response when confronted with a new and unexpected situation. On the other hand, children from healthy families are better able to weather unknown

situations.

Psychological and physical trauma in childhood seems to alter the brain in a way that makes it more susceptible to anxiety. For one thing, it makes what is known as the HPA axis overly sensitive.

The HPA axis is a pathway of hormones that influence mood. Imbalances of certain hormones in this pathway increase the risk for anxiety and may induce anxiety symptoms.

Early trauma also may cause a lasting increase in certain stress hormones, and pumped-up levels of these hormones may keep the body in a state of alert. (I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, www.askdoctork.com.)

Traumas also may change

the structure of the brain. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that plays a central role in processing long-term memories. It works closely with the amygdala, the brain’s “fear” center. The hippocampus is smaller in some people with post-traumatic stress disorder. It also is smaller in some people who have endured extreme, prolonged stress.

Of course, not everyone who has survived a traumatic event develops an anxiety disorder. That’s where a person’s genes and brain chemistry come in. It’s possible some people are genetically or biologically more susceptible to anxiety, but it may take a traumatic life event to actually “push” them into being anxious.

In fact, an inherited tendency to be anxious may turn some childhood experiences into traumatic ones. For example, it may cause a 3-yearold to fear she has been abandoned every morning when her parents leave for work.

Most 3-year-olds without that inherited tendency would not feel abandoned.

On the other hand, trauma is not always a trigger. Some people who develop an anxiety disorder have not endured particularly stressful events.

As with most illnesses, anxiety is affected both by genes and by life experiences.
