Proceeds from the run will go to the Morris Hospital Foundation for the Betty Sterritt Nursing Scholarship Fund. Betty Sterritt was a beloved nurse manager at Morris Hospital who passed away in 2010. Since then, staff from Morris Hospital has helped raise money each year for the scholarship fund, which was established by the Sterritt family.

MORRIS – Three hundred sixty-six runners and walkers completed the Morris Hospital Cornfest 5K Fun Run to Support the Betty Sterritt Scholarship Fund on Sept. 27 in the neighborhoods surrounding White Oak Elementary School in Morris.

An additional 60 children ages 8 and under completed the Tot Trot. It was the 13th year Morris Hospital sponsored the event in conjunction with the Grundy County Corn Festival.

Connor Swanson, 13, of Newark, was the first-place overall male winner with a time of 17:53.5. Erica Duvick, 28, of Morris, was the first-place overall female winner with a time of 21:34.3. Duvick is the niece of the late Betty Sterritt, whom the scholarship fund memorializes.

The second-place overall male and female winners were Ray Hervaud, 39, Sheridan, with a time of 19:02.6 and Michelle Miller, 32, Morris, with a time of 21:39.1. Rick Dudley, 43, Morris, finished third among the males with a time of 19:07.6.

Bridget Landers, 13, Morris, was the third place overall female with a time of 22:19.9.

Morris Hospital announces results of Cornfest 5K Fun Run 11

MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – On Sept. 26, Talty Chevrolet donated $750 to help We Care obtain 7,681 lbs. of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank and provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves.

“In the spirit of the Corn Fest theme, Talty Chevrolet Buick Cadillac employees were truly ‘Coming together to help out our neighbors’ by filling the pantry again this year.

For over 40 years, our family has been here for your family,”Ken Talty of Talty Chevrolet said in a news release from We Care.

During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 268 families from its food pantry. We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for its pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The NIFB is able to provide food, cleaning and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores, such as 26.8 oz. boxes of cereal for 41 cents each, 24 oz. bottles of Italian dressing for 33 cents each, and

Get ready to vote The November election is drawing near, and the April election is right around the corner. Both are opportunities for exercising our constitutional right to choose the people who will speak and make decisions for us, a right many countries in the world do not have – the right to vote.

Yet, many individuals will find reasons not to vote: no time, insufficient information about the candidates, little faith that the average Joe can effect change and the worst one of all – not caring.

These are not reasons. They are excuses.

No time? Polls open early in the morning and remain open well into the evening on Election Day. Still no good?

Then consider the early voting options, of which there are several. Any registered voter in Grundy County can vote before the official date with valid photo identification.

Insufficient information about the candidates? Certainly the Internet has simplified the process of learning about state candidates, but what about local ones? The Morris Daily Herald will remedy that for you.

Election Central, a project other Shaw Media newspapers also offer, will soon be posted online. On it will be a wealth of information on candidates running for contested offices in Grundy County, including answers, in each candidate’s own words, to questionnaires we will send them.

Little faith the average Joe can make a difference? The only way to effect change is to choose who will manage your hardearned taxed money and govern your community. The only way to choose is to vote.

Not caring? Here are some reasons why you should care. Like it or not, elected officials will make decisions on your pension; your children’s education; the amount of money you will pay in taxes; and the overall safety of your roadways, workplace and community.

Furthermore, the officials elected at the state level also will make decisions on the federal level that will affect your health care, Social Security and even your – or your parents’ – Medicare and Medicaid.

There’s still time to get educated, to make informed votes and to register to vote.

Would midterm loss crack stonewall on keystone pipeline?

The federal government recently began its seventh year of considering whether to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Nearly all that time has passed under the administration of President Obama, who seems content never to decide the pipeline’s fate.

That way, it wouldn’t be built, which would please the president’s supporters on the liberal environmental fringe, but would never be explicitly rejected, which could offend everybody else.

It’s striking to see an administration stonewalling an issue with so much popular support on the other side. When it comes to the Keystone pipeline, the marchers are a small group isolated in a distant corner of public opinion.

At various times in the last few years, Republicans have felt that Democrats would just have to give in and let the pipeline go forward. It never happened.

Now, the president and his allies on the environmental left seem determined to keep the pipeline stalled even if it contributes to Democrats losing the Senate.

If the prospect of a costly loss, plus the continued opposition of an overwhelming majority of Americans won’t open their minds, what will?

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Morris unsuccessfully tried to take DeKalb by surprise on Friday night, as the Redskins fell to the Barbs, 42-0 Morris, who kicked off to open the football game, figured they would try a rare onside kick to keep the high-powered Barbs offense off the field.

It didn’t work and DeKalb recovered, and the offense – which features Illinois-bound running back Dre Brown, took the field.

Brown didn’t waste much time, running for an 18-yard touchdown on DeKalb’s opening drive. DeKalb would score three times before halftime and led 21-0 at the break.

The Barbs took a 14-0 lead after taking advantage of a Morris turnover. DeKalb’s Rudy Lopez recovered a Redskins fumble, and Brown put the Barbs in the end zone with a highlight-reel touchdown. Brown took the handoff from quarterback Derek Kyler and ran 75 yards for a touchdown, leaving the Morris defense in the dust. Brown rushed for 138 yards in the first half.

The Barbs’ defense was no slouch either. DeKalb held the Redskins to just 18 total yards in the first half, stuffing the Morris rushing attack.

DeKalb came into the game looking to become playoff-el-

igible for the second straight season. The Redskins entered the game hanging on for their playoff lives. A loss would mean Morris would have to run the table to become playoff-eligible, or the Redskins would be missing the playoffs for consecutive years for the first time since 1981-82.

Dibble, tipped pass reception give Coalers late lead

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – For most of the first half Friday night, the Interstate Eight Large matchup between Coal City football and Streator was all about the ground game, in the Coalers’ 14-0 win against the Bulldogs.

Through the first 22:43 of the half, only one pass was completed, for nine yards by Streator.

With the Coalers facing fourth-and-4 from the Streator 37-yard line, Nick Micetich rolled to his right and looked downfield. After misfiring on his first seven at-

tempts, he threw again.

This time, the ball was tipped in the air by a Streator defender. However, it landed in the hands of Coal City receiver Ryan Horrie. Horrie got control, kept his feet inbounds at the 20 and ran the rest of the way into the end zone.

Joe Quinn’s kick gave Coal City a 7-0 lead with 1:17 remaining in the first half, a lead they took into halftime.

The scoring drive was set up by a fumble recovery by Coal City linebacker Parker Czaja at the Coalers’ 33-yard line, which had been Streator’s deepest penetration

into Coal City territory.

On third-and-2, Jack Dibble nearly broke free for a touchdown, stopped only by a shoestring tackle by Streator’s Kort Davies. Dibble finished the first half with 111 yards on 20 carries.

Meanwhile, the Coal City defense allowed a few big runs up the middle by Streator fullback Donavin Finney, but for the most part kept the Bulldogs from moving the chains.

Finney had 84 yards on the ground, compared to 21 for the rest of the team.

Late in the third quarter, Dibble broke through the line and went untouched up the

middle for a 34-yard touchdown, giving the Coalers a 14-0 lead. The carry was Dibble’s 28th of the night and gave him 175 yards.

ator punt, Coal City kept the ball in Dibble’s hands, and the captain responded. He had 211 yards on 34 carries after halftime, with no sign of slowing down.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield East running back Jake Mayon has several qualities that serve him well.

Minooka’s defense got an up close and personal look at all of them in Friday night’s Southwest Prairie battle, and it was anything but a pleasant experience.

Mayon used his quick feet, cutback ability and refusal to go down easily to score three touchdowns as East remained in the thick of the SPC race with a 25-6 victory.

Brandon Rivera was another thorn in Minooka’s side, catching nine passes for 116 yards, including a 60-yard bomb from Cole Kotopka early in the fourth quarter that extended the lead to 25-0.

The other part of the equation was the Bengals’ defense, which shackled Minooka’s offense all night. East, taking advantage of favorable field position, limited the Indians to six first downs and 72 total yards until the Indians mounted an 80-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter.

Minooka (3-3, 2-2) had not

put together a serious scoring threat previously.

Indians quarterback John Carnagio completed 24 of 39 passes for 169 yards and the touchdown. He was intercepted once, and East picked off two passes total.

The Minooka defense received a couple of doses of Mayon in the first half. The Indians lost a fumble on a botched handoff on the second play from scrimmage.

Four plays later, Mayon’s cutback run resulted in a 24-yard touchdown and a 6-0 Bengals lead with 10:30 left in the first quarter.

The defenses took over for both sides from there, although East (5-1, 3-1) had better field position and opportunities. It appeared the 6-0 score would remain intact.

But on a third-and-10 from the Minooka 43, Mayon took a toss in the right flat from Kotopka, ran into a solid tackle and ran right through it. Once he shook free, there was nothing but green grass ahead and he took it the distance to make it a 13-0 halftime lead.

Runs of 14 and 12 yards by Zach Russell got the Fighting Irish within striking distance, and on third-and-goal from the

3-yard line, Bryce Coyle got the handoff, started toward the middle of the line, then bounced left for an easy touchdown.

Seneca next received the ball with 1:01 left in the first quarter and maintained it until more than three minutes had passed in the second, chewing up 86 yards.

A 46-yard Coyle run highlighted the drive, but the Fighting Irish then got more methodical, using nine plays to cover the final 35 yards. Pifer’s 1-yard touchdown run, along with a two-point conversion pass from Arik Applebee to Russell, made it, 14-0, in favor of the Fighting Irish.

Bengals’ Mayon too much for Indians

When Westmont (3-3, 2-2) got the ball at the 8:47 mark in the second quarter, it had only totaled 11 yards of offense and no first downs.

That changed dramatically on third-and-10 when Kyle Domin, whose first five pass attempts had fallen incomplete, hit receiver Dimitrios Latsonas, who had gotten behind the Irish defense, for a 76-yard touchdown pass.

The game continued to go Westmont’s way for the remainder of the half. Seneca picked up one first down during its next turn with the ball, but Applebee was sacked

on fourth-and-5.

The Sentinels then relied on Domin’s rushing ability for another touchdown, behind runs of 13 and 22 yards in advance of a 5-yard dash into the end zone. Only a missed extra point on the second Sentinels score allowed the Irish to maintain a one-point lead at halftime.

Westmont’s Quintin Brown fumbled away the opening possession of the third quarter, but he atoned for it when, after an Irish punt, he broke off a 91-yard touchdown run on the Sentinels’ next offensive play.

They then forced another Irish punt and appeared ready

to break the game open when they drove down the field, but on fourth-and-goal from the Irish 3, Brown was tackled inches short of the goal line for a turnover on downs.

Seneca put together a 17play drive that produced an Arik Applebee 2-yard touchdown run and a 22-19 lead with 4:04 left in the game, but it was short-lived. Westmont had plays of 13, 15, 7, 13 and 19 yards on the resultant drive, with the fifth play a run by Domin for the winning touchdown.

Seneca’s final drive produced only half of the 10 yards needed for a first down.

Grundy County felony dispositions announced MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland recently released the following felony dispositions.

The State’s Attorney’s Office often reaches plea agreements in cases following a careful consideration of the nature of the charges, the facts of the case, a thorough consultation with the crime victim, a review of the offender’s criminal history, and weighing aggravating and mitigating factors that exist.

The State’s Attorney’s Office makes no representation as to the accuracy of such information. In all cases, the official records of the court clerk should be consulted for confirmation.

• John Burrell, 19, of Braidwood pleaded guilty to burglary, a Class 2 felony, and was ordered to serve 70 days in jail and was placed on three years of probation. Burrell must pay court costs of $357, a $250 DNA fee, and $50 in restitution.

• Klause Jorg Elias, 59, of Chicago pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of child pornography, a Class 2 felony, and was sentenced to serve three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Elias was ordered to pay a $1,000 child pornography fine, a $500 sex offender fine, a $200 sexual assault fine, court costs of $357, and a $250 DNA fee. Elias will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

• William Esposito, 38, of Minooka pleaded guilty to the criminal sexual assault of a family member under the age of 18, a Class 1 felony, and was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Esposito must register as a sex offender for life. Esposito must also pay court costs of $357, a $500 sex offender fine, and a $200 sexual assault fine.

• Timothy Grady, 27, of Gig Harbor, Washington, pleaded guilty to the unlawful posses-

sion of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, a Class 1 felony, and was sentenced to 32 days in the county jail and was placed on conditional discharge for four years. Grady was ordered to pay a fine of $6,353, court costs of $357, a $100 Illinois State Police lab fee, and a $2,000 mandatory drug assessment.

• Charles Hyslop, 53, of Morris pleaded guilty to theft of less than $500, a Class A misdemeanor, and was placed on conditional discharge for 24 months. Hyslop was ordered to pay a $2,500 fine and $3,000 in restitution.

• Michael Mueller, 19, of Morris pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, a Class 1 felony, and was ordered to serve 6 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Mueller was ordered to pay $513 in restitution, a $250 DNA fee, and court costs of $357. Muller must serve a period of two years of mandatory supervised release upon completion of his prison sentence.

• Brandi Newman, 22, of Morris pleaded guilty to burglary, a Class 2 felony, and was sentenced to 136 days in the county jail and was placed on two years of conditional discharge. Newman must pay a $250 DNA fee.

• Matthew Schubert, 25, of Joliet pleaded guilty to theft, a Class 3 felony, and was placed on 30 months of second chance probation. Schubert must pay court costs of $357, a $1,356 fine, a $250 DNA fee, and must serve four days in the county jail.

Schubert must obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and complete the recommended treatment. Schubert must also complete 30 hours of community service.

• Ralph Zilm, 21, of Custer Park pleaded guilty to two burglaries, both Class 2 felonies, and theft of more than $500 but less than $10,000, a class 3 felony, and was sentenced to three years of probation. Zilm served 12 days in the county jail and must pay $3,830 in restitution.

Anderson named to the public works department Braidwood Station emMINOOKA – Ryan Anderson has been named the interim superintendent of Public Works for the village of Minooka.

The appointment came after longtime superintendent Rob Tonarelli suddenly died last month. Tonarelli was employed by the village for 31 years.

Anderson was hired last November as the assistant public works director, and has 14-plus years experience in public works, according to a news release from the village.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The chairs were filled Thursday evening in the waiting room at the Grundy County Health Department as residents 65 and older waited their turn to receive a flu shot.

Ruby and Kenneth Matteson come every year to the health department to receive their shot.

“I wouldn’t miss it,” Ruby Matteson said. “It’s a good preventative measure. As we get older, we can get sicker.”

She said she enjoys being able to go to the health department for her flu shot, as she has gotten to know the staff and feels comfortable receiving her shot.

Judy Bailey, director of nursing at the health department, said it’s important for everyone to get a flu shot. But the people with the most complications are young children, people older than 65 and those with underlying conditions.

“I come get flu shots because I am a Type 2 diabetic,” Donald MacTrinder said. “My doctor recommends that I get them all the time.”

He said the shot doesn’t hurt and is definitely worth going to get to avoid getting the flu.

Bailey said the seniors who received the shot Thursday and those who come Monday for the second clinic receive high-dose flu shots which are formulated for seniors.

“It gives them higher immunity and gives more of a boost,” Bailey said.

Injectable influenza vaccines are made to protect against the flu strains most likely to cause illness for that particular flu season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Fluzone High-Dose vaccine contains four times the amount of antigen [the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibody] contained in regular flu shots. The additional antigen is intended to create a stronger immune re-

The Grundy County Health Department hosts flu clinics each year for various age groups, starting with the 65-and-older group with the high-dose flu shot.

The first clinic was Thursday, and the next is scheduled for 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday.

Bailey said the high-dose flu shot is reimbursed through Medicare Part B and residents wanting the shot should bring their Medicare card with them to the clinic.

Local residents to appear on ‘Family Feud’

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Wilmington resident Angela Baumeister can’t say much about her appearance on “Family Feud,” but she can say this: It was incredible.

“Steve Harvey is hilarious,” she said.

Baumeister, her dad Richard Caauwe of Seneca, sisters Brenda Bowden of Channahon and Dawn Taylor of Plainfield, and brother Rich Caauwe of Joliet competed on the television show last spring and are sworn

to secrecy until the show finishes airing.

The episodes are airing through Wednesday, when the family is hosting a fundraiser and viewing party at Ebbey George’s Bar & Grill in Morris.

She and her family will be the “celebrity bartenders” for the event, and will show the live taping of their final episode, as well as the other four episodes they appear in.

All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Grundy County and a local prostate cancer support group out of Advanced

Urology Associates, a group dear to the family’s heart as Richard Caauwe was diagnosed with the disease more than a year ago.

“We thought, what a cool way to turn this into a fundraiser and be able to give back to the community,” Baumeister said.

For Baumeister, being on the show fulfilled a childhood dream. When an opportunity to audition came to Chicago, she gathered her family and made the trek to the city.

That was several years ago,

and after an entire year without a reply from the show, Baumeister assumed her family did not make the cut.

An email sent almost a year and half after the audition proved her wrong. The show wanted her family to come back for further tryouts, and after they passed those, the family was flown to Atlanta for even more tryouts.

“Everyone there was so nice and polite to us. The people who worked for the show were really great,” Richard Caauwe said.

Although the family can’t say much about their appearance, they can say they filmed five episodes, which is the maximum amount of times a family can appear on the show.

Two of the episodes had already aired by Saturday. Their final episode will be shown Wednesday.

Baumeister encouraged everyone to come down and watch, enjoy the drink specials and help raise money for local causes.

“It should be a lot of fun,” she said.

Take Back the Night event scheduled for Wednesday

The event coincides with the Take Back the Night campaign and Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Speakers at Wednesday’s event include Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland, Megan Miller from the Grundy County Groundwork program, and a local survivor of domestic abuse who will share her story.

The purpose of the event is to spread awareness and education about domestic violence, a problem that will affect one in two women and one in five men in their lifetimes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Helland will speak about the laws regarding domestic violence and how they affect women locally.

“The domestic violence laws are constantly changing, and that’s something people need to be aware of,” he said.

Reminding victims they are not alone and can break the cycle of violence is another important aspect of the gathering, Miller said.

Others who know someone experiencing domestic abuse also should be aware of how they can support a victim and possibly guide them to a safer situation.

“I would say everyone is affected by domestic violence, whether it’s indirectly or directly,” Miller said.

Incidents with NFL player Ray Rice have brought attention to domestic violence recently, but Helland said residents need to remember that domestic violence can affect anyone.

On display Wednesday will be an installment of the Clothesline Project, which features shirts that communicate the experiences of the domestic abuse victims who made them.

Miller said she also will have a visual representation of shoes to illustrate how many reported domestic violence victims there are in Grundy County.

Helland encouraged everyone to learn about Breaking Away, a program sponsored by

his office that offers assistance to reported victims of domestic violence, including safety relocation.

GRUNDY COUNTY – Mosquitoes collected in Minooka and Morris have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Grundy County Health Department.

These represent the fourth and fifth confirmed detections of the virus in Grundy County this year, according to a health department news release.

The other positive pools were collected in Braceville, Morris and Minooka in late August and early September.

Even as the weather cools down, the health department says a risk of West Nile transmission remains. It encourages people to continue taking steps to avoid infection.

To minimize risk, the Illinois Department of Public Health suggests the following: • Reduce exposure by avoiding the outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn. Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including flowerpots, wading pools, old tires and any other receptacles, and change water

in bird baths weekly.

• Repel mosquitoes when outdoors by wearing shoes and socks, long pants and a longsleeved shirt. The IDPH also recommends insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535. People should consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

• Report areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes to whoever handles mosquito control activities in your area.

According to the IDPH’s website, “mild cases of West Nile infections may cause a slight fever or headache. More severe infections are marked by a rapid onset of a high fever with head and body aches, disorientation, tremors, convulsions and, in the most severe cases, paralysis or death.”

Symptoms typically appear between three and 14 days after a bite by an infected mosquito. People age 50 or older are at the highest risk for serious illness.

Morris Rotary Club collects year, the group ran short on larger coats for homeless veterans sizes, so it seeks large, 2x and 3x MORRIS – The Morris Rotary Club is collecting used winter coats for homeless veterans living on Chicago’s streets.

Stand-down day for veterans is Nov. 21 at the Humbolt Armory, according to a Rotary Club news release. Homeless veterans come to get checked out and receive food and clothing they will need to get through the winter.

This is the third year the Morris Rotary has participated in this project to gather coats, according to the news release. More than 1,000 coats are needed. Last

Anyone interested in donating a coat can bring one to either the Morris Building and Loan or Morris Hospital. The coat collection runs until Nov. 14. Rotary members will then take all collected coats to be sorted and delivered to the Armory for stand-down day.

Morris Rotarians, as well as some Interact students from Morris High School, help the veterans pick out a coat for the winter.

8 Prosectuers seek to keep Grundy County tentative multiplier announced

By JASON MEISNER Chicago Tribune CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors want an animal activist accused of releasing hundreds of minks from a Morris farm into the wild kept in jail pending trial, saying he has shown “an escalating dangerousness” in his protests of the fur trade and other issues.

In an 11-page court filing Wednesday, prosecutors asked a judge to detain Kevin Johnson at the Metropolitan Correctional Center before he is paroled later this month after completing a 30-month sentence in state prison in Danville.

Johnson, 27, and his friend, Tyler Lang, 25, were charged in federal court in July with conspiracy and interstate travel to damage and interfere with the operations of an animal enterprise. Prosecutors alleged the two drove through Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois in August 2013 with plans to damage animal farms.

“Johnson’s past history and characteristics illustrate a commitment to unlawful extremism and the advancement of his agenda through crime,” prosecutors wrote in the filing.

Johnson’s attorney, Michael Deutsch, said Wednesday he will ask Shadur to set a bond.

Prosecutors said in the filing that the FBI in Los Angeles conducted “a long-term investigation” of Johnson and his activities in California. He first came to the attention of law enforcement during a protest of juice company executives in Santa Monica in 2006.

Video from the protest shows Johnson outside the executives’ home screaming threats on a bullhorn to harm them and their families, according to prosecutors.

Three years later, after being convicted of burglary and serving time in prison, Johnson was arrested during a protest outside the home of UCLA professors after threats were made over the professors’ use of animals in research, according to the filing. He later pleaded guilty to criminal stalking and served about a year and a half in prison, prosecutors said.

In May 2012, five months af-

ter his release on parole, Johnson was arrested for shoplifting and inciting a riot, prosecutors said. He later served time for attempting to burglarize a pharmacy, according to the filing.

Prosecutors said Johnson had been on parole only two months when he and Lang went on their cross-country spree. On Aug. 14, 2013, they released about 2,000 minks from their cages at a farm in Morris that bred and sold to fur manufacturers. They also allegedly spray-painted “LIBERATION IS LOVE” in big red letters on the side of a barn.

Neighbors told the Tribune that many of the animals were killed by traffic on the farm road leading into town, while others were found splashing in yard sprinklers and running through gardens. Dozens of the animals survived and were rounded up and brought back to the farm, neighbors said.

The family that runs the farm has declined to comment.

The day after the incident, Lang and Johnson were arrested by sheriff’s police near a fox farm outside Roanoke, about 70 miles southwest of Morris, after a search of their car turned up ski masks, camouflage jackets, bolt and wire cutters, muriatic acid and reading materials on fox and mink, according to state charges filed last year in Woodford County.

Both men pleaded guilty to those charges. Lang, who had no criminal history, was sentenced to probation, records show.

Deutsch, meanwhile, said he plans to challenge the constitutionality of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, the federal statute under which the charges fall.

On a website supporting their cause, both Lang and Johnson – who also goes by Kevin Olliff – posted statements decrying the charges against them.

“The fur industry confines and kills millions of animals every year for fashion – but the American government points the finger and calls animal advocates violent,” Johnson wrote on the site, supportkevinandtyler. com.

If convicted of the federal charges, they each face a maximum of 10 years in prison, prosecutors said.
