“All evidence shows Joseph Sipple, 27, acted alone in this heinous act,” Police Chief Tim Henson said in a statement released Wednesday.

Sipple, who once was a resident of Morris, committed suicide when police came to arrest him for an unrelated

burglary two weeks after Donna J. Denker, 60, and Kelli L. Denker, 30, were found June 14 shot in their home.

Another male relative also was wounded when the mother and daughter were killed in their home in the 200 block of West North Street in Dwight.

On June 26, LaSalle County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to arrest Sipple at his girlfriend’s residence near Sheridan after linking him to stolen property. Sipple reportedly ran to a nearby garage and killed himself with a .40-caliber Glock

semi-automatic handgun.

Henson said ballistic tests confirmed the gun Sipple used was the same firearm that killed the Denkers.

On July 30, police searched a large wooded area near Sipple’s girlfriend’s house and found a large blue tarp hiding several long gun cases, Henson said in the statement. The cases and guns inside had been reported stolen to Morris police.

“Also discovered were several items belonging to Joseph Sipple, including what was be-

lieved to be a pair of his white tennis shoes, in which police were told on numerous occasions, he always wore,” Henson said in the statement.

Henson confirmed the Glock also was reported stolen in a Morris burglary, while Sipple was involved in burglarizing the Denker house in August 2013.

On Oct. 21, testing at the state police crime lab confirmed the white tennis shoes found in a blue tub next to the stolen guns had the victims’ DNA on them, Henson said.

Survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Judy (nee Scherry) Hughes; two sons, James D. (Amy) Hughes and Gregory T. Hughes; two daughters, Judiann (Kevin) Neff and Carrie Ann (Daniel) Bernier; two stepdaughters, Barbara Hiller and Beth (Greg) Strand; 13 grandchildren, Lauren and Grant Hughes, Gabrielle, Danielle and Brianna Uphoff, Jacob, Joshua, Rebecca and Rachel Bernier, Justin and Neil Hiller, and Mark and Mitchel Strand; his siblings, JoAnne (Richard) McGrath, Maureen (the late John) Kristin, Kathy McCallum,

Patsy (Rich) Bajarunas and Michael Barton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Barton; and his father, James J. Hughes.

Services for James T. Hughes will be Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 12:00 p.m., Pastor Steve Larson officiating. As it was James’ wish, cremation rites will be accorded after services.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s name to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

But with severe food allergies, she can’t let him eat the treats he will get going houseto-house on Halloween.

Thanks to the “Teal Pumpkin Project,” started by Food Allergy Research and Education , children like Oliver have the chance to enjoy Halloween along with everyone else.

The Teal Pumpkin Project encourages communities to make Halloween enjoyable for children with allergies by offering non-food treats to trick-or-treaters, according to FARE. Those participating paint a pumpkin teal, the color of food allergy awareness, and

“I know this affects a lot of people,” Nelson said. “It’s not fun taking away candy after they have gone trick-or-treating.”

She hopes to see other houses in Morris join in by offering both candy treats and non-food treats for children to choose from.

“For me, it’s all about their childhood and being able to participate. Just because they have allergies doesn’t mean they have to be in a bubble,” she said.

Nelson’s son Oliver had his first allergic reaction when he was 7 or 8 months old, she said.

He had just started baby food.

“He broke out in hives, his face was swollen, we took him to a doctor and Children’s Hospital and had him tested,” she said.

She said they found food allergies to both dairy and eggs.

The doctors hoped that, with time, he might grow out of it, but at his last allergy testing he was labeled as “very allergic.”

‘Meet the Candidates’ highlights options for voters

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Local residents got to hear during a Meet the Candidates Night held Tuesday about future plans of local candidates who hope to be elected into office on Election Day. The event featured Grundy County Board candidates, sheriff, treasurer, clerk and state representative candidates. It was sponsored by the Grundy County Farm Bureau and WCSJ radio.

Incumbent Kevin Callahan, D-Morris, and Ken Briley, R-Minooka, who are running for Grundy County Sheriff, were asked if they feel the county has proper staffing in that department.

Briley, who answered first, said the sheriff’s office could use more staff.

“We need more deputies on the street,” he said.

Briley said more deputies are needed to work undercover to address the county’s heroin epidemic, and he doesn’t feel one deputy assigned to the Metropolitan Area Narcotic Squad unit is enough.

Sometimes it takes a fresh set of eyes to see changes that need to be made, he said, noting that after serving 24 years in the Department of Corrections, he realized how stagnant he had become in that position.

the current staff, which is the same number the department has had for the past 25 years, is adequate.

“I was challenged by the County Board to cut 10 percent of my operating budget,” he said. “That means cutting a deputy. I have been able to prevent that.”

He doesn’t believe the answer is buying the way out of the problem, Callahan said, and said the best use of tax money is to have full-time deputies. Hiring part-time staff adds cost of uniforms and training, and Callahan said this would not be effective spending.

State race In addition to the sheriff’s race, candidates from the County Board, treasurer, clerk and state representative faced off at the Meet the Candidates Night.

Incumbent state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, and Martha Shugart, D-Morris, were the last to face questions.

Both are running for the 75th House District.

One of the questions they were asked was their thoughts on Senate Bill 16, which, if approved, would change the way schools in Illinois are funded to a formula based on need.

Anthony, who was the first to respond, said he is a spon-

sor of House Resolution 1276, which aims to stop SB 16.

“I am not for this bill,” Anthony said of SB 16. “There are 18 school districts within the 75th district, and only three of these districts win from this bill.”

Anthony said Chicago would benefit the most and only has one district that will lose money. Schools in the 75th would lose $1.13 million in state funding if SB 16 becomes

Republicans Ron Severson, Chris Balkema and David Welter, ignoring the Grundy County Assessor’s expert opinion of the true assessed value of the Dresden facility, negotiated with Exelon to reduce the Dresden nuclear plant assessed valuation causing Grundy County and the area schools to lose millions of dollars of revenue from 2013 until 2018, instead shifting the tax burden onto the working middle class families of Grundy County. Under Democratic Leadership, the Dresden plant, a plant with another 20 year renewal of its license and increasing electric rates and fees, saw increases in its assessed valuation, adding to our tax base and lessening the tax burden on Grundy homeowners.

It is time to have common-sense leadership working on behalf of the working men and women of Grundy County.

Trustees approved the extension of a deed restriction that gives the Minooka Fire Protection District another 10 years to utilize a parcel of property, deeded to them by the village in 2008.

The original agreement was that the fire district would utilize the property on Minooka Road for services within 10 years. If the property was not used in that manner, it would go back to the village, according to records.

Although the property has not yet been used for the required purpose, the village does not want to enforce the original covenant.

Trustees voted 6-0 to extend the time another 10 years.

“We did a great thing here,” Trustee Dick Parrish said.

In a 6-0 vote, trustees approved a demand on a security bond for Arbor Lakes subdivision because the developers have not paid their share in the cost of rebuilding Brannick Road.

The residential and commercial developments on the corner of Brannick and Ridge roads had a contribution clause in their original agreements to fund upgrading of the road. The others that abut the property, Indian Ridge subdivision and the Ace Hardware commercial development, all paid into the fund early, Duffy said.

The contribution clause has long expired so the village will pull the bond that was set up to protect taxpayers for situations such as this and use the money for the road, Duffy added. Ar-

Minooka’s yearly audit received a clean opinion with no misappropriations or errors, auditor Brian Zabel said.

The village ended fiscal year 2014 with $4.3 million in the general fund, which is 84.4 percent of annual expenditures, a healthy surplus in that fund, Zabel said.

“I would say the village is over funded, which is a good spot to be in,” Zabel said.

Fund balances are in very good shape, and everything is in order, he said.

The village’s good financial shape is due in large part to the board’s conservative spending practices and detail to financial budget plans for the last 10-plus years, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said.

Renovating the Village Hall space, instead of building a new facility is a good example of the board’s conservatism, Duffy said.

MINOOKA – A $6,600 donation to Grundy County Emergency Management Agency created discord among Minooka trustees at the monthly Village Board meeting Tuesday.

The donation to help offset the cost of a recently purchased mobile command center garnered support from just four of the six trustees.

Trustees Barry Thompson and Terry Houchens both voiced disapproval, saying the vehicle was already paid for through the county’s budget and therefore by taxpayers.

“We have already paid for it; I don’t think we should take money from our village and community,” Thompson said.

“Everybody is stretched, [the money] could be used for something else.”

Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan said the village of Diamond had made a similar donation after the EMA assisted Diamond and Coal City after the tornado in November 2013. There was no pressure from the EMA to make a donation, Brennan added.

“It’s a wonderful piece of equipment and if something happens here it would be great to have,” Brennan said.

Houchens agreed with Thompson, adding that while the EMA is important, he couldn’t support being double taxed.

Trustee Dennis Martin, who

voted in favor, said the donations speak volumes for the municipalities and the mobile unit is important to all residents.

The resolution approving the donation passed in a 6-0 vote.

Later in the meeting, Brennan said that while the board doesn’t always agree on every issue, it’s good they can talk it out and come to a conclusion.

Kristin Lawler, clinical dietitian with Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers, said the top allergies for children are milk, eggs, fish/shellfish, nuts, soy and wheat.

“Most reactions include hives, swelling of the tongue, mouth or fingers, and difficulty swallowing,” Lawler said.

“Nuts are one of the allergies that are very difficult to work with. The risk is just not worth taking.”

She said hard candy is typically free from allergies, but parents need to check labels to make sure they weren’t packaged where other allergens are.

The state needs to be competitive with the surrounding states and aggressively pursue practices that make Illinois a family-friendly affordable state so residents remain in the state, Shugart said.

Anthony said he is against the temporary tax increase becoming permanent.

“It’s a bad bill. The Illinois Farm Bureau believes it to be a bad bill, John Anthony believes it to be a bad bill, the 75th District believes it to be a bad bill,” Anthony said.

He said when he was appointed to the seat, he sent out a survey to find out what the people of the district believed, and how they felt about the issues affecting the district and state.

“I don’t know if you know, maybe I’m lost about the definition of temporary,” Anthony said. “Temporary does not mean permanent.”

CALLAHAN’S CASH IN ENVELOPES TROUBLING To the Editor: I’m sure we have all been reading and hearing about Grundy County Sheriff Callahan’s paying his deputies in cash for overtime worked on a traffic detail.

Remember when you hired on to your job? You had to fill out a W-4 form for the federal and state governments, to set up that withholding. Here is what the federal form says: “Complete Form W-4 so that your employer can withhold the correct federal income tax from your pay.” Looking at Title 26, Subtitle C, Chapter 24, 3402, it states “Except as otherwise provided in this section, every employer making payment of wages shall deduct and withhold upon such wages a tax determined in accordance with tables or computational procedures prescribed by the Secretary.” This is a federal law that is being broken with this practice.

If Sheriff Callahan had gone to the state’s attorney and figured this out, he could have brought this issue up himself, and addressed it. Instead, he apparently tried to wait and hope this would go away. That isn’t leadership.

Callahan’s comments (Discussed Oct. 17 on WCSJ News) that this is “dirty politics” are laughable – nobody has smeared Sheriff Callahan with false accusations – he admits that he did this. This is isn’t dirty politics, it’s the sheriff’s record.

Instead of saying that he is accountable and will clean up the mess, according to the county board meeting transcript, Sheriff

Callahan attacks the person who raised the concern, blames everyone else by saying it’s been done for 20 years, and doesn’t offer immediate action to resolve the issue, and sadly, neither does the Grundy County Board.

Sheriff Callahan’s attacks on the person who raised this issue are improper and create a chilling environment for anyone else who might have similar concerns.

Sheriff Callahan, take accountability for your actions, and clean up this mess in your office.

I’m supporting Kevin Callahan for sheriff because I know how much experience means. Nothing can compare to Kevin’s 31 years of experience as a deputy, sergeant, chief deputy and now as our sheriff.

Kevin has investigated every major crime in Grundy County over the last 25 years. I don’t believe his opponent has ever investigated a major crime here or anywhere he has served. Valu-

able experience on the job and coming up through the ranks as Sheriff Callahan has done gives him the leadership experience we all need in our sheriff.

Since Kevin has been sheriff, he established the first-ever Grundy County Sheriff’s Merit Commission to ensure fairness in hiring practices on the sheriff’s office.

He also created the Sheriff’s Police Explorer Program so any of our youth who have aspirations of becoming a police officer receive valuable training and experience to help determine if police work is a career they really want to pursue.

Finally, I was very upset with the way Mr. Briley downgraded and made untrue statements about my friend Ron Marx this spring during the primary election. Instead of running a positive campaign about himself, he continually made negative statements that surely didn’t set well with me or anyone who knows what a good man Ron Marx is. He deserved to be treated with honor and respect, but he was not.

Under Pat Quinn, the program known as Upward Mobility provides free college educations for state employees. Five million dollars from past budgets has been spent, according to a statehouse reporter. After he filed two FOIAs, nobody in the Comptroller’s Office or Central Management Systems knows where the money came from and the program is still up and running.

As long as they keep providing entitlements to the population

of Chicago, nothing is going to change, except the state will go broke before the country does.

Washington does the same thing, so the country will be next because all these entitlements (free cell phones, free Internet, etc.) are all for votes. Anybody that thinks they can be happy and prosperous by letting the government take care of them better take a closer look at the American Indian.

The private business sector is real life business, not a government job. The percentage of the previous 18 president’s cabinets (before Obama) that worked in the business sector before their appointment to the cabinet range from 32 percent to 55 percent. Obama’s cabinet – 8 percent. And these people are trying to tell our big corporations how to run their business!

How can the president of a major nation and society stand and talk about business? He never worked for one. Or about jobs when he has never really had one. Let’s vote his cronies out this election!

Seneca Grade School students visit quarry MORRIS DAILY HERALD SENECA – Can you imagine standing next to a tire that costs $22,000? Seneca Grade School students did just that.

The sixth-grade class visited Vulcan Materials Lisbon Quarry as part of a mining unit the students are studying, according to a news release from the school.

Don Theobald, the Plant Manager and other staff members organized an all encompassing learning experience for the students.

The students learned about prospecting, the mining process and reclamation of land. They watched a short informational video on the mining process.

Then, the students completed 10 different hands-on educational stations. Rock and mineral identification, sequencing suspended solids, describing how both size and density can impact how layering occurs, and making decisions on product use based on core drill samples were among the educational modalities com-

pleted by the students.

“I was surprised to hear that a lot of items we use today couldn’t have been made without mining,” sixth-grader Justine Ursua said in the release.

The students took a bus ride into the quarry and observed the trucks loading aggregate, transporting aggregate and unloading the aggregate into the crusher.

“The most interesting part of the field trip was seeing the rock crushers and learning how many times the stone would have to go through the sifters to get to the correct size,” student Luke Sangston said.

In the next week, the students will further investigate the life cycle of a mine, careers in mining, and discovering the importance of aggregate producers. As a culminating activity, the students will be completing research on coal mining in Illinois and submitting their projects to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Office for the 27th annual Coal Calendar Contest.

Egyptians used a process called embalming to preserve people’s bodies.

It took a long time and had many steps.

What is a mummy? A mummy is a dead body that has been preserved.

When people die, the body usually begins to decay. Soft parts, such as the skin and other organs, soon rot away. But in mummies, the body does not decay.

Sometimes the bodies were preserved on purpose. Other times, the body is preserved by accident. It might have been frozen, left in a very dry place or even covered by a peat bog.

This mystifying mummy is trying to trick you. Can you separate fact from fiction? Follow the mummy’s wrappings to check your mummy memory.

For Egyptians, the scarab beetle was a symbol of life after death. It is found on masks, jewelry and decorations that adorn the tombs holding their mummies.

In ancient Egypt, people wrote with pictures. The symbols in this kind of writing are called hieroglyphics (hi-ro-GLIF-iks).

Sometimes a picture meant exactly what it showed. Other pictures stood for letters. The pharaoh’s name was spelled out inside an oval border called a cartouche (kar-toosh).

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For most of the rest of the football teams that are in the playoffs, the reality of finality of a postseason loss is a new concept.

The Morris football team, however, has been living with that reality for the past three weeks. After sitting with a 2-4 record through six games, the Redskins knew a fifth loss would mean no playoffs for them.

Since their last loss, however, Morris has reeled off

wins against Kaneland, Sycamore and LaSalle-Peru, earning them a spot in the Class 5A playoffs with a 5-4 record.

However, the thrill of making the playoffs is balanced against being paired against an undefeated Normal U-High team on the Pioneers’ home field, Hancock Stadium on the campus of Illinois State University. The Pioneers are ranked No. 5 in the most recent Associated Press 5A poll.

“They definitely have plenty of weapons,” Thorson said.

“We’ve played a tough schedule,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “Of course, we feel like a couple of our losses could have been wins, but we learned something from those games. We feel like we have gotten better as the year has gone on and we are peaking at the right time.”

Normal U-High has been an offensive powerhouse this season, doing a bulk of its damage through the air. The Pioneers average 36 points and 225 yards passing a game.

They are fairly balanced, however, as they pick up 160.3 yards a game on the ground as well.

Quarterback Nick Phelan is the trigger man for the U-High offense, completing 58 percent of his passes. He has thrown for 20 touchdowns against just seven interceptions and also is a threat to run. He has rushed for 339 yards and six TDs as well. Niles Smith

COAL CITY – When Coal City’s football team takes its home field Friday at 7 p.m. against Mendota in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs, the Coalers expect to see a team similar to themselves.

The Trojans enter with a 6-3 record, while the Coalers are 7-2. Coal City’s only two losses are to Manteno, which is 8-1 and ranked fifth in Class 4A, and Wilmington, which is 9-0 and ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, while Mendota has been beaten by 8-1 Johnsburg (No. 12 in Class 4A), 9-0 Rockford Lutheran (No. 1 in Class 4A) and 5-4 Oregon.

Both teams prefer to run the ball, and with good reason. Coal City’s size up front, headed by 6-foot-5, 305-pound Matt Long, has enabled senior speedster Jack Dibble to run for 1,666 yards and 19 touchdowns in nine games, while Mendota’s Wyatt Martinson has run for 1,222 yards and 17 TDs. As a team, Mendota averages 252.8 yards on the ground a game.

“They like to run it,” Coal City coach Lenny Onsen said about the Trojans. “They run a lot of Wing-T, but they will also go with some Power-I, they will bring out seven offensive linemen for sort of an unbalanced look. They run some pistol out of the shotgun and even some double wing. They like to go out of multiple formations, so our defense has to be ready for anything.

“Mainly, we just want to go out and do what we do best. I have been really happy lately with our pursuit on defense.

We have been getting to the ball quickly and gang tackling. That’s something I would like to see us build on Friday night.”

When Coal City has to

throw the ball, junior Nick Micetich has been improving throughout the season. He has completed 31 of 61 passes for 450 yards.

“Nick has gotten better every game,” Onsen said. “He makes the throws he has to.

We haven’t asked him to do too much, but he has done whatever we have asked him to. He manages the game real well, and that’s what we need out of him.”

The defense has been Coal City’s calling card for most of the season. Led by a sturdy defensive line and linebacking corps, the Coalers have proven adept at slowing down most teams’ running games.

Minooka defeated Bradley-Bourbonnais, 25-12, 24-14, in a match that wasn’t scheduled to start until 7:30 p.m.

Leaders for Minooka (23-9) were Cynthia Ley (three kills, four blocks), Ginger Perinar (five kills, 2 aces), Allison Papesh (five killis), Emily Hise (four kills) and Kelly Clucas (14 assists).

“We came out strong and won the battle at the net both offensively and defensively,” Minooka coach Chris Hoelscher said. “We also served and passed very well. It was a great effort from everyone.”

Minooka plays for the regional title at 6 p.m. Thursday, taking on top-seeded Rock Island in Moline.

GIRLS SWIMMING Morris 96, Kankakee 89: The Redskins ended their regular season with a win. Leading the way for Morris was the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Myckala Tobolsky, Kaea Kreis, Reilly Chytracek and Jennifer Ashley, which took first place with a time of 5:01.87. Ashley won the 100 butterfly (1:17.18) and got second in the 200 individual medley (2:55.41). Tobolsky recorded second places in both the 50 (31.95) and the 100 freestyle (1:10.6), while Chytracek took first in the 200 freestyle (2:33.14) and second in the 400 freestyle (5:31.8).

Kayla Lewis won diving with a score of 186.15. Other top finishers were: Morgan Abraham (100 butterfly, 1:21.32), Andrea Wydeveld (100 freestyle, 1:23.96), Alyssa Solis (400 freestyle, 6:07.14; 100 backstroke 1:34.25). So, how did this all go so terribly wrong?

Let’s start with the premise that Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall were suddenly going to be MVP candidates and team leaders in their ninth seasons in the NFL. The Cutler hopes were a hair more realistic than those for Marshall because they were based on the belief/hope that Marc Trestman was the quarterback whisperer he needed.

Cutler’s shortcomings have never been the result of coaching, they are the result of habits he’s developed over a lifetime in the game that are as damaging today as they were the day he left Vanderbilt.

As for Marshall, it took four seasons for the Broncos to realize they couldn’t afford to have him around any longer and only two for the Dolphins to come to the same conclusion.

Why was he suddenly going to get better, let alone fail to do damage in his third season in Chicago?

Unfortunately, there is a lot more.

Almost every day in Bourbonnais I heard someone say at least we “know” the defensive line is better.

And I kept asking how do you know that? Lamarr Houston had absolutely no pass rushing credits to his name coming out of Oakland, and it was more than possible that Jared Allen was at the exact same point of his career as Julius Peppers or possibly even a little further down the backside of the hill.

The Bears had the worst safeties in football last season and “fixed” that by bringing back one of them in Chris Conte and adding career backups Ryan Mundy, Danny McCray and M.D. Jennings to compete with him.

How was that supposed to turn out any differently than it did?

It’s great having the best pair of starting wideouts in the NFL, or at least Marshall and Alshon Jeffery were last

year. But how do ignore the third and fourth spots?

Demariyus Thomas and Wes Welker were actually more productive last season than Marshall and Jeffery when you include TDs. But the Broncos made adding Emmanuel Sanders a priority.

What did the Bears do?

There’s really no mystery here.

We’ve got the next week or so to try to figure out what’s next and how close or far away a winning team really is.

But the story of the 2014 season so far is the Bears, led

by Phil Emery, mixed up a big batch of sugar water with none of the actual ingredients you need to make Champagne, and we all just gulped it down on our own.

It’s been like that for the last three weeks for us, so we’re used to that. Our kids have had a good week of practice, and we’re ready to get going.”

If you are like most of the people I’ve been talking to on the radio, or the gang that’s emailing me regularly or just most of the folks I bump into on the streets, you’re probably feeling duped by the 2014 Bears right about now.

I never drank the Kool-Aid some of you did and uttered or even dreamed the two biggest words in sports: Super Bowl.

In fact, I’ve been clear since last spring these guys aren’t good enough to win a playoff game.

But I did predict these guys could be good enough to hang around through a brutal first nine games on their schedule, six of which were on the road, and then win six of their last seven to finish at 10-6, giving them an 87 percent probability of being a wild-card team.

Obviously, that’s not going to happen.

At the table, though, West led a highly debatable heart 10. South took dummy’s two winners, discarding his two minor-suit fours, then played a diamond to his jack. (He was confident that with queen-high diamonds, West would have led that suit.)

No one theory can explain why we yawn Dear Doctor K: I get plenty of sleep. So why do I yawn all the time?

Dear reader: We all yawn frequently, more often in the early morning and late evening. Does it mean we’re tired? Bored? Short on oxygen? As common as it is, we know little for certain about yawning.

We do know that yawning does not always indicate a need for sleep. It is true that people often yawn as they get ready to retire for the night. But we also yawn when we first arise in the morning and at other times during the day.

Past theories about why we yawn centered on the assumption that it was a reflex in response to low oxygen or high carbon dioxide levels. That’s because breathing (which is what we do when we yawn) takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. When you yawn, you take in more air than with a normal breath. So it’s a reasonable theory that we yawn because we need more oxygen, or less carbon dioxide.

But reasonable theories often don’t prove true.

This particular theory lost favor after a study in which volunteers subjected to high oxygen levels did not yawn less, and after high carbon dioxide exposure did not yawn more.

Another theory of yawning is that it protects against a condition called atelectasis (at-al-EK-tas-is), which is the collapse of some of the lung’s air sacs.

The lungs are full of tiny little air sacs, but not all of them are filled with air. If an air sac remains without air, it’s like a little collapsed balloon. Instead of being

If that goes on for very long, the walls can get sticky. It gets harder for the air sac to open when new air enters the lungs.

Yawning opens up tiny airways and prevents them from collapsing. So the theory that yawning is a reflex that protects against atelectasis is reasonable. This could explain why yawning seems to occur when your breathing is shallow, such as when you’re tired or bored. However, we don’t know if the theory is true.

Here’s another theory: Yawning might be a warning system to alert you that you’re getting sleepy and you had better stay awake.

If you are driving a car, for example, and relaxing to the point where you might soon fall asleep, yawning might make you more conscious of the need to take a break. Yawning is associated with stretching of the muscles and joints and an increased heart rate. That may make you more alert.

Finally, yawning may be a sign of disease. Although rarely the first sign, excessive yawning has been observed among people with multiple sclerosis, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and Parkinson’s disease.

To be clear, yawning is not usually a sign of disease.

It’s usually just a sign that you’re human.
