Born: Nov. 9, 1924; in Mazon, IL Died: Oct. 2, 2014; in Morris, IL Esther E. Jackson, 89, of Mazon, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2014, at the Morris Hospital.

Born November 9, 1924, in Mazon, Esther was the daughter of the late Gordon and Amanda (Sorem) Leach Sr. Esther was raised and educated in the Mazon grade schools. She graduated with the Mazon-Verona High School class 1944.

Esther married Lawrence Jackson on June 21, 1947 whom preceded her in death on March 25, 2005.

Esther worked in the Seneca shipyards, Douglas Aircraft in California and the Lindsay Chemical Company. She was a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her cats. She enjoyed watching the Cubs and Bulls play and having her family near her. She was a member of the Mazon Methodist Church, a RNA (Royal Neighbors of America) of Mazon and a member of the Senior Citizen Bowling League.

Esther is survived by her son, Dennis (Kathleen) Jackson of Morris; her grandson, James (Christie) Jackson of Michigan; granddaughter, Linda Watson of Morris; great grandsons, Mason Jackson of Michigan and Jacob Watson of Morris; great granddaughter, Julie Jackson of Michigan; brother, Milford Leach of Morris; and her sister, June (Robert) Elam of Morris; and one niece and seven nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 56 years of marriage; and two brothers, Gordon Leach Jr. and Davey Leach.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2014, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan

Funeral Home located at 301 West Washington Street in Morris. A Celebration of Esther’s Life will be held on Monday October 6, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Deborah Percell of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

Memorials may be made in Esther’s name to the Mazon Methodist Church or to the choice of the donor.

JOYCE N. KERN

Born: Dec. 13, 1930; in Hartsburg, IL Died: Sept. 30, 2014; in Townsend, GA Joyce N. Kern, 83, passed away Tuesday evening, September 30, 2014, in Townsend, GA, While visiting her son.

Born December 13, 1930, in Hartsburg, IL, she is the daughter of the late Valma R. and William J. Kline. She married Kenneth Kern on December 18, 1947, in Oglesby, IL, whom preceded her in death on June 12, 2009.

She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, reading books and doing word puzzles. She was a member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City.

LEO EDWIN SEBBY Born: July 3, 1923 Died: Sept. 26, 2014

Leo Edwin Sebby, 91, died September 26, 2014. Born July 3, 1923, in Newark, Illinois. He grew up and lived in the Yorkville and Newark area. He graduated from Yorkville High School in 1941 where he enjoyed playing on the Foot-

ball and Basketball teams.

He was proud to have served in World War II in the Pacific Theater as an MP in the Army. On December 27, 1949, he married the love of his life Joyce Carolyn Skinner. He worked much of his life as a farmer starting as a boy on the farm near Helmar with his family. He finished his working career and retired from Caterpillar.

Leo’s hobbies included woodworking, gardening, discussing politics, and feeding the local birds. He was recognized for combining his woodworking talents and love for the birds when he built and placed numerous “Blue Bird houses” in the local area.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce; son, Bruce Sebby and wife Konnie of Yorkville; son, Mark Sebby and his wife Becky of Coal City; and six grandchildren, Kory Sebby and wife Jen, Joan Sebby, Bradley Sebby, Krysten Sebby, Richard Sebby, and Jon Sebby and wife Tatianna; and great-grandchildren, Tyler James and Ashlyn; sisters in law, Frances (Bazan) Sebby, Marian Skinner, and Mary Ellen Walker. He was also “Uncle Leo” to thirty nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Luther and Carrie (Sand)Sebby; his son, Lloyd Sebby; brothers, Silas Sebby and Olga (Erickson) Sebby, Donald Sebby; sisters, Rosella and Everett Anderson and Ruth and Gordon Schobert; nephews and nieces, Milton Anderson, Steven Sebby, Carol Sebby, Bob Sebby. Brothers and sister in law, Laurance and Gert (Erickson) Skinner, George Skinner, and Luther Walker.

In keeping with his requests there will be no formal ceremony.

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Last month, girls from Donna Mueller’s School of Dance donned “Wizard of Oz” costumes and followed the yellow brick road, all the way to the Dance Olympus Grand National Championships.

The dancers performed a Wizard of Oz-themed hip-hop routine in a series of nationwide competitions beginning in March. They walked away with top honors in the junior grand national division, beating out other elite dance teams from throughout the country.

The routine involved 15 local dancers ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old.

“It was a really good day. I remember we were all hugging and we were so happy,” said 9-year-old dancer Mikenna Stacy, who performs as the Tin Man in the routine.

The dance also features cameos from Dorothy, the Wizard of Oz, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow.

The remaining dancers wore red glitter jackets, reminiscent of the ruby red slippers made famous by the movie.

When she designed the routine, Mueller said she wanted to expand people’s ideas about hiphop dance.

“Most people, they don’t have a good connotation about hip-hop,” Mueller said. “They see MTV and all of that, and they think that is hip-hop. But hip-hop can go a completely different direction.”

The girls began practicing the routine last fall, devoting several hours each week to mastering the dance.

They began the tournament circuit, eventually winning their way into the regional championships in Chicago. After a victory in Chicago, they performed their dance via video for a panel of judges in New York, Mueller said.

Eight-year-old Brielle Legner said this was the first time in her six years with Mueller’s school that she performed not as herself, but as a character.

“I didn’t feel like myself. I was trying to be more lion-y,” Legner said.

Like other girls on the team, Legner watched and loved the Wizard of Oz, especially “the part where Dorthy meets all of her friends.”

How do the girls feel about winning the national title?

“I’m excited,” Stacy said. “I love dancing and being on stage.

It feels like we are the stars.”

Coal City Octoberfest supports cancer awareness

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The 29th annual Octoberfest held in Coal City Friday will honor cancer survivors and loved ones lost to the disease.

Octoberfest, organized and run by the GFWC-IL Coal City Junior Woman’s Club, is taking on a cancer awareness theme.

Cherie Sieger, Junior Woman’s Club president, said she lost her father, Jim Davis, to liver cancer, as well as an aunt.

The theme is close to her heart.

She had a co-worker, Renae Berggren, create a “Cancer Tree” on a 4-by-6 foot sheet of plywood. Various colored cancer ribbons take the place of leaves.

There are two additional sheets of plywood on display with the tree at Octoberfest, where residents can post photographs of their loved ones or write messages on the wall.

After Octoberfest, the wall will be sealed with polyurethane and placed in the Campbell Memorial Park gazebo until November, when it will go to a group that supports cancer awareness.

April Bumpous, another Junior Woman’s Club member, also lost her dad to bone cancer, after he survived prostate cancer.

“When Cherie said she was doing the wall, I knew this was my way of giving back to people who help raise money to help find a cure,” Bumpous said.

Bumpous will be at the information booth with ribbons in all the cancer awareness colors.

People can pick up the color most important to them, place their loved one’s name on it and wear it as an armband.

“There is no cost for the ribbon, but if they would like, they can make a donation,” she said.

The parade’s last float will carry cancer survivors. Others are welcome to follow at the end of the parade with a sign stating who they are honoring. The signs also will be available at the information booth.

“The two most important reasons that we needed this to go through was for the safety of our students and the safety of our staff,” Bugg said.

The board recently reviewed a recommendation from the athletic committee regarding the

implementation of new guidelines for spectators at extra-curricular activities.

After reviewing the recommendations and suggesting some modifications, the board approved the new guidelines.

“The Board of Education recognizes the importance of parents and community members supporting the extra-curricular efforts of our students through their attendance at events,” a news release from the board of education said.

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Special Education Cooperative is no longer pursuing a proposed in-home classroom on Indian Grass Road in Morris.

The cooperative’s Executive Director Neil Sanburg said it has withdrawn the application for the zoning text amendment and conditional use permit for the proposed property.

The co-op intended to work with the Grundy Area Vocational Center to purchase one of the GAVC’s project homes – constructed by students in the building and trades program – and use it as a life-skills classroom for young adults in the co-op’s REACH Transition program.

The proposed zoning amendment and use permit requested by the co-op, which came

before the city’s planning and zoning board last week, were the source of opposition from a group of neighborhood homeowners who publicly voiced their concerns.

Sanburg said the co-op is still committed to building a transitional, in-home classroom for REACH students, but will pursue other location options.

“The opposition we received at the planning commission made us rethink the proposition,” Sanburg said.

Sanburg added that the community where the proposed house would have been had a right to present their concerns about the proposed home.

“It’s part of the democratic process,” he said.

The co-op had requested an amendment to a section of the municipal code that stipulates conditional permitted uses in the R-1 single-family residence district. Among those R-1 uses

is schools, specifically naming boarding, non-boarding, elementary, junior high and high schools in the code.

The term “special education program” is not specifically included in the description of schools.

Planning and Zoning officer Bill Cheshareck said adding “special education program” to the type of schools permitted

would allow the co-op to build a special education classroom setting in any residential neighborhood in Morris.

The conditional use permit would allow for specific accommodations for the new in-home classroom, such as widening the driveway to accommodate for additional parking for teachers, something the co-op discussed doing, Sanburg said.

MORRIS – A new Grundy County Health Department, Environmental Health Division fee schedule was adopted at the September Grundy County Board meeting.

Several fees were increased for the Well, Septic and Food Programs, according to a news release from the county health department.

“The Grundy County Health Department is advising the public, contractors and/or

temporary food vendors seeking permits to visit our website or call to find out the new fees before mailing applications for permits,” according to the release.

The new fee schedule and a new temporary food vendor application can be found at www. grundyhealth.com under the “Environmental Health” option.

Competition for medical marijuana cultivation centers will be fierce in Will, Grundy and Kendall counties.

The state received 14 applications – the highest received in any police district – for cultivation centers in Illinois State Police District 5, according to figures released Thursday by the state. But only one can win out. Will, Grundy and Kendall counties make up ISP District 5.

The medical marijuana law only allows 21 growing center licenses statewide – one per police district – out of the 159 applicants vying to get into the business.

Will County Board Member Tom Weigel, who heads up the county board’s Land Use and Development Committee, said land and location may have attracted so many applicants to ISP Dis-

trict 5.

“I’m kind of surprised, but there’s plenty of land in Will County,” Weigel said.

“There’s a lot of interest here because of just our closeness to Chicago.”

It’s unclear how applications are split among the three counties.

Curt Paddock, director for the county’s Land Use Department, said five companies expressed interest in unincorporated Will County.

However, he couldn’t confirm whether any of those five companies applied to the state. Another two companies have approached the city of Joliet.

Weigel said the high interest shows county board members made a “good decision” to not require special use permits when zoning for growing centers. The county did not want to impose too many restrictions. But there was a backlash when Wilton Township residents opposed

a proposal in that area.

If unincorporated Will County is chosen, Weigel said it will be a major win for the county.

“I understand they generate some taxes for the local municipality or taxing districts. There’s a large investment of several million dollars to set up such a facility,” Weigel said. “Right now, some of these areas are agricultural and hardly any taxes are being generated, so this would be a big increase for the schools and the different taxing bodies.”

In all, the state received about 370 applicants for cultivation centers or dispensaries. The state received a little more than 200 applications for dispensaries and is expected to grant up to 60 permits.

The Lorch family has paid next to nothing on their electricity bill, thanks to the solar panels they installed on their Joliet home.

“I pay nothing,” Bill Lorch said Wednesday. Before he installed solar, his electricity bill, in the winter at its greatest, was “unimaginably costly,” he said. “[The panels] pretty much pay for itself,” Lorch added.

Under the state’s “net metering” law, Lorch said he can sell his excess electricity back to utilities – in this case, Commonwealth Edison – at retail prices.

MINOOKA – Warren Kronberger hopes to see people Saturday at the front door of his Minooka home.

Kronberger is participating in Saturday’s Illinois Solar Tour – a free, self-guided, statewide open house demonstrating how homes and businesses are using solar, wind and geothermal to become energy independent.

The open house event, coordinated by the nonprofit American Solar Energy Society, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday statewide. Homes on the tour can be visited anytime during those hours.

The installation of a solar thermal system in 2005 has cut the family of four’s propane fuel use by half, Kronberger said.

The same year the system was installed, the family’s propane tank provider even asked to exchange his 500-gallon tank with a 250-gallon tank, since his fuel use had dropped so dramatically, he said.

“If you have any interest, any at all, this gives you a chance to speak with someone who’s installed it and lived with it at the home,” Kronberger said.

“You’ll hear all the pluses and minuses and we can dispel any myths you may have heard.”

Ebola has arrived; it’s time for serious action On Sept. 2, seven Northeastern University scientists wrote an academic paper published by the Public Library of Science predicting Ebola could reach the United States by “the end of the month.”

Last week, The Washington Post reported that it was only a quirk of timing that kept an American doctor in Africa long enough to realize he had the disease before returning home. Otherwise, Ebola already would have arrived in the doctor’s hometown, Dallas. The Post wondered if the “resulting panic” would be “impossible to contain” once the word got out that there was “Ebola in Texas.”

The Northwestern academic paper proved prophetic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Tuesday the first person infected with Ebola who had not been brought to the United States for treatment has, in fact, turned up in Dallas. We’ll find out shortly if there will be any “panic.” The CDC said the person flew to Texas from Liberia on Sept. 20 and exhibited symptoms Sept. 24 before seeking care two days later.

Ebola in America. If those words don’t take your breath away, you’re hardly breathing. The disease is ravaging West Africa and experts have been screaming from the rooftops – and even the podium at the United Nations – that the world was not paying enough attention to a disease that has been doubling in scale every three weeks. We knew it was coming.

of Africa had been restricted by 80 percent, it would have delayed the spread by only three to four weeks.

What next? Quarantine Texas?

Hardly. It’s time for a deep breath while insisting that our leaders are sufficiently concerned to take emergency action. Remember, this is only one case, and the nation’s top doctor sounded the perfect note as he addressed it: “There is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it,” Dr. Tom Frieden, head of the CDC, told the ABC affiliate in Dallas. “This is not Africa.

We have great infrastructure to deal with an outbreak.”

We have some unexpected experience, too. Ebola, like AIDS, is transmitted through bodily fluids. So the key to staying away from Ebola is to have no contact with the bodily fluids of others.

Still, there’s plenty of cause for concern. First, Ebola takes up to 10 days to manifest and death follows shortly in 70 percent of African cases. In nations with better health care it is likely to be a lower percentage, but no one knows by how much.

Second, Ebola might be capable of mutation, which could make it harder to stop. So the key to stopping it is arresting the spread early – which is what doctors are trying to do in Texas.

But our leaders are on break, working to get re-elected. If they really want to show us how effective they can be, Congress can put together an emergency plan and help the CDC and doctors on the ground get started on a cure. There’s no time to waste. Ebola has arrived.

A liberal strategy to save the Episcopal Church Once upon a time, the Anglican bishops at the global Lambeth Conference boldly declared the 1990s the “Decade of Evangelism.”

This effort was supposed to spur church growth — and it did, in the already-booming Anglican churches of Africa, Asia and across the “Global South.” But in the lovely, historic sanctuaries of England and North America? Not so much.

“There was some lip service given to evangelism at that time,” said Ted Mollegen, a businessman with decades of national Episcopal Church leadership experience.

The Episcopal Church then created a “20/20 Vision” task force committed to doubling baptized membership by 2020.

The goal was a renewed evangelism emphasis, along with programs for spiritual development, emerging leaders, church planting and improved work with children, teens and college students. Mollegen was the task force’s secretary and a founding member of the Episcopal Network for Evangelism.

Episcopalians, however, promptly entered yet another period of doctrinal warfare and schism, symbolized by the departure of many large evangelical parishes following the 2003

Evangelicals have “traditionally placed more emphasis on making converts than those of us in mainstream churches and on the left,” he stressed.

“They have a strong motivation, since they believe that if people don’t convert to Christianity then they’re going to hell.

I don’t believe that, of course, and most Episcopalians don’t believe it, either.”

The church-growth stakes are high, as Mollegen has noted for years. Episcopal Church membership peaked at 3.6 million in 1966 and is now at 1.9 million, with 650,000 in church on typical Sundays. More than half of U.S. parishes had an average Sunday attendance of 70 or less, according to 2009 statistics, and roughly a third of active Episcopalians are 65 or older.

The bottom line: The Episcopal flock shrank 42 percent in an era in which the U.S. population grew 70

percent. Mollegen stressed the news will get worse before it gets better, since “such a high percentage of our members are past their childbearing years” and Americans “under the age of 35 are less likely to join institutions of any kind these days, either secular or religious.”

What to do? In addition to stressing church-growth basics from the 20/20 task force, Mollegen has urged Episcopalians to defend their liberal beliefs, rather than simply teaching “people who theologically are still Baptists how to use Prayer Books. You haven’t completed the job until you’ve taught them what the Bible really is, and how to react to it with intellectual integrity.”

Also, parish leaders in some parts of the country may – with permission from their bishops – try to court people who are “spiritual” rather than doctrinally minded by tweaking liturgies to say that worshippers merely “trust” ancient Christian creeds, as opposed to vowing they “believe” them.

MORRIS – Even though it has lost three games by the scant total of nine points this season, the Morris football team still sits in the unenviable position of having a 2-3 record so far, with games against DeKalb, Kaneland, Sycamore and LaSalle-Peru remaining. The Redskins will have to go 3-1 in those three games in order to reach the playoffs, and that arduous task begins tonight at unbeaten DeKalb.

The Barbs and University of Illinois-bound running back Dre Brown are 5-0, having scored 221 points for an average of 44.2 a game. Their last two wins came against their biggest rivals – Sycamore and Kaneland – and both were close. They beat Sycamore, 55-40, and Kaneland, 37-34.

And, while the offense has indeed been explosive, the defense has also allowed the most points in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East at 129 total for the year.

“DeKalb will definitely be the best offensive team we will have played so far,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “Obviously, they have Dre Brown, and he’s a threat to go all the way any time he touches the ball. But, they have a couple of other good backs and their quarterback, even though he’s only a sophomore, runs the ball well and throws the ball well.”

After their second straight one-point overtime loss Friday night – 29-28 to undefeated Yorkville – the Redskins know a bit about facing adversity.

Thorson hopes that the lessons learned in those two games will come in handy Friday night.

“The kids were down Friday and most of the day Saturday,” he said. “But, they are smart kids, and they know they have to put those games behind them.

Watching the films of those games, there were a lot of positive things we can take out of them.

“We know that things aren’t getting any easier and these are games coming up that we have to win if we want to get back in the playoffs.”

Jake Walker returned to the lineup. He ran the ball nine times for 69 yards and caught nine passes for 97 more. Also giving a boost to the Morris offense was tight end Chase Hansen, who caught two passes for 33 yards, both of them touchdowns on fourth down.

“Having Jake back was big for us,” Thorson said. “He’s such a good athlete that the other team is going to have to pay special attention to him no matter where he is. That opens things up for everyone else and makes our offense that much better.

“I really thought Chase Hansen played well last week. When we throw the ball, we don’t really have a go-to guy that we look at. Putting Chase in the mix like we did last week really gives the other defenses more to think about. They really can’t key on one guy.”

Even with the offense adding a new weapon or two, Thorson knows that it’s the defense that’s going to be tested the most against the Barbs.

“Like we do with Jake, they are going to do whatever they can to get the ball in Brown’s hands,” he said. “They are a very good team. They aren’t 5-0 and at the top of the conference for no reason. We know we are going to have to play our best game and build on what we have done in our other games that has been good.

“It’s been frustrating to the kids to see so many good things being done, but we are 2-3. Like I told them, we are nine points away from being 5-0. But those little things that have happened to make us 2-3 have to stop, and it’s up to us as coaches to find a way to fix it.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A couple of weeks ago, the Morris boys soccer team went to Sycamore and came home with a 3-3 tie. Since then, nearly every match for the Redskins has been a close one, but other than a win over Minooka last Saturday, the matches have been close losses.

At long last Thursday, the Redskins chalked up a close win, beating Sycamore 2-1 at home. Not only was it the first close win in a while for Morris, but it marked the first victory in Northern Illinois Big 12 play.

“This was a big one for us,” Morris coach David Valdivia said. “Beating Minooka the other day was huge, and this is big because it’s that first conference win. Now, we hope we can get back to playing tough in conference. We know we won’t win the title, but maybe we can play spoiler to a team

Morris welcomed back senior Luke Rodriguez, who had missed a few games with a leg contusion. The senior showed no ill effects, as his speed helped the Morris offense on numerous occasions.

“I was out for four days, then came back for the Ro-

chelle game and was out yesterday,” Rodriguez said about his leg contusion. “It felt real good today, and it felt good to get a win in the conference under our belts.”

Sycamore got on the board first when Ivan Chavez scored on a penalty kick with 20:08 to play in the first half. Although the Spartans (6-10-3, 1-2-1) had

a lot more chances, it was the only time they scored, thanks to a Morris defense, led by goalie Matt Borgstrom and sweeper Tyler Pletsch, that turned them away at every turn.

Roughly four minutes later, Rodriguez was taken down in the goalie box and awarded a penalty kick of his own, which he converted to tie the match with 16:18 left in the first half.

Two minutes later, Ricardo Del Toro capped the scoring with a header at the 14:20 mark.

Neither team was able to score in the second half.

“The whole team played excellent,” “Rodriguez said. “The defense was great, our passing was good. This was one of our better games of the year and one we can build on. Plus, we have another injured player, Nick Borgstrom, that will be back soon, so when he comes back full strength we will be able to do really well.”

Morris, which has won three straight regional championships, was awarded with the top seed in the Class 2A LaSalle-Peru Regional, followed

by Streator, LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa and Kankakee.

“We played very well tonight,” Valdivia said. “They [Sycamore] had some different formations, and our guys adjusted well to that. Our passing was a little off, but that’s to be expected with as wet as it was.

But we seemed a lot more calm and confident tonight and I hope we are starting to trust the system a little more.”

Minooka captures Southwest Prairie Conference girls golf title STAFF REPORTS JOLIET – After falling one stroke shy of a sixth straight title in last year’s conference meet, Minooka’s girls golfers were determined to start a new streak this season.

And the Indians did just that after having four of the top nine placers in Wednesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference tournament at Inwood Golf Course.

Minooka defeated runner-up Plainfield North, 367377, to give it a 21-16 point advantage over the Tigers in the final standings, which included dual meet results.

Danielle Harris, a senior who was her team’s eighth scorer earlier this season, led the Indians with an 85, which tied her with Oswego East’s Leena Hwang for second place.

They were two strokes behind the champion, Plainfield North senior Carly Staser.

ka were Alli Lee (91), Miranda Sharp (95), Andra Sharp (96), Emily Knaub (99) and Maddie Erickson (100).

“Obviously, one of our strengths this year has been our consistency,” Indians coach Joe Host said. “You never know who’s going to beat who. Danielle shot an 85 and has really turned it on in the second half of the season and helped us at the right time.

“One thing that has helped us get out of regionals recently is that everybody is within a few strokes of each other. Our girls do a nice job of stepping up and helping each other. We came close to keeping the streak going last year, and hopefully this starts a new one.”

It is great to get twice the money for one piece of work. At the bridge table, as we saw yesterday, that is sometimes possible in the bidding. I pointed out that a jumpshift response by a passed hand is fit-showing: length in that suit and partner’s suit.

That was in an uncontested auction. When the opponents sail in, I like to use fit-jumps even by an unpassed hand. I jump as high as I am willing to drive the auction.

In this deal, after South opens one diamond and West overcalls one heart, North jumps to two spades, showing a limited hand with five spades and four-plus diamonds. (With a stronger hand, North could jump to three spades.)

The auction then proceeds to five diamonds by South.

West leads the heart ace and shifts to his trump. East wins and plays a club. How should South continue after guessing well to win with his club ace?

Declarer needs three dummy entries: one to take the spade finesse, one to ruff out East’s spade king, and one to reach the established spade winners.

Those entries are a heart ruff, the diamond queen and the diamond six – did you see the necessity for South not to play his diamond five at trick two? Then you can bring home the contract with four spades, five diamonds, one club and the heart ruff.

Note that if North initially responds one spade, East would jump to four hearts and leave both North and South wondering what to do.

Dear Abby: My father is dating a woman who is not only my ex-boyfriend’s mother, but also the woman he cheated on my mother with and left her for. I don’t want to be around her and have told my father this, but he doesn’t accept or respect my feelings. Being around them causes stress on my marriage because my husband doesn’t want to be around her either, and we don’t want her around our children.

This is causing so much stress that at times I’m afraid it could end our marriage. When I try to talk to Dad about this, he acts like there is no reason for me to be uncomfortable and blames my husband for these feelings. It’s like he completely denies that there is any way I could feel the way I do, even though she has brought nothing but negativity into my life.

I don’t know what to do. I want to still have a relationship with my dad, but my marriage comes before this.

At this time there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. (This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.)

Some risk factors, like a person’s age or race, can’t be changed. Others are linked to cancer-causing factors in the environment. Still others are related to personal behaviors, such as smoking, drinking, and diet. Some factors influence risk more than others, and your risk for breast cancer can change over time, due to factors such as aging or lifestyle.
