Coal City tornado victims to receive funds in November

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – The Long Term Recovery Committee in charge of distribution of the relief fund for victims of the June 22 EF3 Coal City tornado is set to distribute funds in November.

Originally, the committee hoped to have checks out by October, but due to some families still registering, and the work involved for the accountants to verify and write more than 500 checks, the disbursement was slightly delayed.

“There were still people registering and we wanted an accurate count of people and donations before moving forward,” said Devan Gagliardo, program director with the Community Foundation of Grundy County. “We estimate 520 of the households affected have registered, and a majority of the funds will be disbursed.”

To date, there is about $300,000 in the fund managed by the Community Foundation. About $20,000 of that was in place before the tornado and will remain in the fund in the event of another disaster.

Operation St. Nick and the Community Foundation each donated $10,000 to the fund after the Diamond tornado.

in the form of a check to each of the registered families, according to Gagliardo.

She said that will leave the fund with money to be used for future needs.

“The remaining funds will go through the case management teams,” she said. “People will continue to receive assistance.”

So far, $346,000 has been given out in the form of assistance. Much of that amount has been through the case management agencies.

Gagliardo said letters went out Oct. 22 to registered families stating the amount they would receive and where to pick up their checks.

The checks will be distributed in person to avoid delays with mail for changed addresses, and to ensure everyone gets their check as planned.

If a check is not picked up, the case management teams will reach out to the individual families to arrange pickup of the funds. The committee still is accepting registration from affected families.

South Wilmington, East Brooklyn residents await official work flooding issues

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com SOUTH WILMINGTON – For three decades residents of the towns of South Wilmington and East Brooklyn have been waiting to see how the Illinois Department of Natural Resources would address flooding issues in the Mazon Creek that divides the two municipalities.

The wait is not over.

“This project seems to have had many issues,” said Frank Halpin, Grundy County Board member and area resident. “We continue to wait for results from the state.”

The issue started with a “500year flood” in 1982 when water filled the typically shallow creek and overflowed into both towns, causing evacuations and property damage.

“They took people out of here on the school bus. The water was so deep that Terry Marketti, who was still a deputy at the time, had to walk alongside the bus making sure it was still on the road,” Grundy County Board Member Dick Joyce said.

As Halpin and Joyce stood last week on the bridge above the creek showing Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor the area that has been discussed repeatedly in committee meetings, Pryor said the flooding they described was hard to imagine.

The creek, which seemed little more than an extremely shallow wisp of water with a lot of dry creek bed showing, doesn’t appear to be capable of such destruction.

“It’s not a matter of if it’s going to happen at that level again, but when,” Halpin said.

“We were very fortunate this year it didn’t rain as much upstream as it did in other parts of the county.”

Joyce said there is no reason it won’t flood again, because nothing has been done to resolve it.

Run 4 Morris series grows 5K series’ finish begins holiday season in downtown Morris

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Having just completed its fourth year of races, the Run 4 Morris 5K Series continues to grow.

Morris Downtown Development Partnership Executive Director Julie Applegate said a new high mark of 37 people participated in four of the five races on the circuit this year, qualifying them for free gear and prize drawings.

“There’s definitely some incentive,” Applegate said.

Though past numbers were not available, Applegate said she’s confident this year’s total was a bit of a jump from previous years.

The success of the series can be attributed to several different factors. One of them is word of mouth. Applegate said the series’ presence on Facebook has grown, which gets the word out to a wider audience.

Organizers of individual races also gladly share information on the other races in the series, she said.

Something as simple as handing out a flier at one race about upcoming races helps the brand grow.

Another key element is that the 5Ks represent good causes. For example, the Lakewood Animal Hospital 5K & Mile Puppy Trot raised money from registration fees, raffles and donations to go toward the cost of spaying and neutering dogs and cats before their adoption.

News of the boost in participation comes following the Run The Beat 5K, which took place Saturday and had about 135 participants this year, up from less than 100 last year, according to Applegate.

“The race turned out very well,” Applegate said. “The participation was up quite a bit. It’s a really fun and well-organized race. I’m happy to see it continue to grow.”

It was the fourth year Special Connections of Grundy County has teamed up with the Morris Police Department to host the event.

All proceeds went to Special Connections, a nonprofit that serves people with disabilities in Grundy County and surrounding areas.

Looking ahead to what’s happening in downtown Morris, It’s a Wonderful Life, a series of open houses at downtown retailers, begins in November, while Home For The Holidays is set for Nov. 27 to 29.

Solutions have had to be modified numerous times because of environmental and local property owners concerns, which has partially held up the project.

“There is no solution that will completely eliminate the flooding,” Pinto said in an email. “The best reclamation solution will reduce flood water elevations during any given precipitation event.

The reclamation will make improvements to the Mazon River to increase its ability to convey flows, will shift the confluence of Granary Creek/

Reddick Run further from the towns, and will route flood waters through the mine lakes in the Mazonia State Fish & Wildlife Area.”

Joyce said the villages, along with the township, have searched for answers since the 1982 flood, and at one point got former state Rep. Mary Kay O’Brien involved, who was able to get money appropriated for the project. It just never went anywhere.

“This has been a project since day one,” Joyce said.

“They did a lot of engineering work and received a variety of proposals. From what I understand the state budget impasse is what is holding it up now.”

Pinto said it is moving forward, though, and IDNR is now in the process of hiring

an engineering consultant to assist with project design, environmental reviews, and obtaining permits from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and other agencies.

“The hope is that they have plans prepared and permits in hand in the next year and a half,” he said in an email.

Having the permits is only the first step, however.

According to the Sponsorship Agreement signed by IDNR and Grundy County, the county is required to acquire all property and property rights that need to be obtained to move forward with the project.

The county also will be responsible to maintain the improvements. Pinto said the start of the project is still three to four years away.

Indoor paintball business nearing debut in Morris

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A paintball facility is one step away from coming to Morris.

The Morris Planning Commission positively recommended, with a 4-0 vote Wednesday night, a conditional permitted use permit for an indoor recreational facility within a B-3 commercial district. Commission members Jim Jennings, Barry Narvick and Jim Garling were absent. Morris City Council will discuss it Monday.

Raymond Smith, owner and operator of Midwest Paintball Inc., said he’s seen hundreds of hits on Facebook and the company’s website to indicate interest is high.

The commission was in agreement after Smith and Mike Fleming of Marquette Properties spoke about the potential business in the public hearing portion of the meeting.

“I see a lot of upside in this,” City Planner Mike Hoffman said.

The paintball business would be located in a former manufacturing facility at 3727 N. Division St. Smith said he’s hoping to open the weekend of Nov. 7 or 14.

When Smith approached Fleming about leasing the property for a paintball business, he said it took him by surprise. But he soon found it would satisfy a demand in the Chicago area, Illinois and entire Midwest.

Smith wants to bring teams in from other states, and Morris makes perfect sense to satisfy the demand for a now interna-

tional sport, he said.

Smith and Fleming also anticipate more tax dollars and potentially more hotel and restaurant purchases made.

“Perhaps a group will play one day, stay a night and play again the next day,” Fleming said.

There are teams in Minooka and Morris, while Chicago has six teams, Smith said. He recently attended national paintball championships in Florida, where there were hundreds of teams present. Smith said he spoke with a team from Texas that will be in the area in December and would like to visit the facility. Smith noted that a lot of universities, such as Illinois State, have college teams.

Hoffman asked about safety procedures. Smith said strict safety rules will be listed – for example, goggles must be worn on the field at all times. All referees know to remove people who violate safety rules. Fleming said there’s a standard set of industry safety rules that all reputable locations follow.

As a manufacturing facility, it once had 75 to 80 employees, much fewer than the employees needed for the paintball operation.

Smith said paintball teams are five people apiece. Two teams play at a time; and even when two teams are waiting to play, there probably won’t be more than 20 people in the building not including employees.

There will be a retail shop where players can buy equipment, as well as a seating area for spectators.

The funds aim to allow the organization to complete the installation of a walk-in refrigerator and sponsor multiple food drives throughout the upcoming year.

MORRIS – The Morris Hospital Auxiliary is hosting its 47th annual Charity Gala on Nov. 14 at Jennifer’s Garden, 555 Gore Road, Morris.

Proceeds will support Morris Hospital’s new Young Hearts for Life program, a free cardiac screening program aimed at identifying local students who may be at risk for sudden cardiac death, according to a news release from the hospital.

The evening will be dedicated to the memory of Kaleb Justice Beck, son of Morris Hospital nurse Brenda Walsh, who died in 2011 at age 14 from sudden cardiac death.

In addition, retired physicians Dr. Joongsik Y. Cho,

Dr. Cesario M. Cumba, Dr. Il B. Kim and Dr. John B. Roth Jr. will be honored for their service to Morris Hospital.

Minooka board OKs new safety measures

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Minooka village trustees approved two resolutions Tuesday night that aim to create a safer work environment in the village.

Cameras will be installed in the foyers of Village Hall, as well as common areas such as the board and community rooms. Cameras also will be installed in the parking lot.

All members present voted in favor; Trustee Rudy Martin was absent.

Village Administrator Dan Duffy said the measure will bring a higher level of security to the municipal building, both inside and out, and will provide a record of transactions between staff and the public.

Approval was given to enter into a contract with LaForce Inc. for the camera installation at a cost of $19,683.

Minooka already utilizes LaForce Inc. for the building’s security door system.

In a separate matter, a contract with Rockwell Automation was approved for a lockout/tagout, or LOTO, program at a cost of $39,400.

LOTO programs train and educate employees on controlling hazardous energy during servicing and maintenance of machinery and equipment, which can seriously injure or kill a worker from unexpected startup or release of stored energy.

LOTO programs are common in industrial settings and are moving into municipalities, Duffy said.

“It’s a lot of money,” Duffy said, “But it’s the safest measure to take for our employees.”

Each locate performed by USIC will cost $17 and include water, sewer, gas, electric and street lighting. The village performed 2,000 locates last year.

By freeing up employee time, Minooka stands to save $20,000 to $30,000 a year, said Duffy.

The agreement will be a big savings for the village, Trustee Barry Thompson said.

“It’s a good use of our money,” he said.

Other business

• Trustees approved three annual payments beginning in 2015 to pay the village’s share of improvements on Holt Road back to Seward Township.

Both the village and the township own portions of Holt Road, said Duffy. The township paid to have the project completed and Minooka’s share of $188,878 will be paid in three installments.

• Residents soon will get a heads-up on community events and meetings from a new electronic message center to be installed in front of the Village Hall. Peter Dougherty, creator of ‘Yo! MTV Raps,’ dies at age 59 The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Peter Dougherty, responsible for some of MTV’s on-air look in its early days and creator of the program “Yo! MTV Raps,” died earlier this month.

He died at age 59 of a heart attack on Oct. 12 at his home in the suburbs north of New York City, his brother Paul said on Wednesday.

Dougherty worked in the promotions department at MTV and, with colleague Ted Demme, suggested the rap show at a time the music network didn’t pay much attention to the style, said David Cohn, a friend and former MTV executive. “Yo! MTV Raps” became an instant hit when it started in 1988.

“He really was at the nexus of the early days of punk and the early days of rap,” Cohn said.

Dougherty also directed some videos, including one for the Pogues’ memorable Christmas song “Fairytale of New York,” set in New York City and featuring actor Matt Dillon.

He later moved to London and was influential in creating on-air promotions that gave MTV Europe its look, Cohn said.

He was active in the animation world and worked later at The Cartoon Network.

Immersed in other cultures Seminary student with Joliet ties recounts days in Guatemala, Cuba

Granted, this isn’t a typical reaction to stepping inside a convenience store in Mexico.

But for seminary student Marcus Lohrmann – a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Joliet who had just spent two weeks in Guatemala and then eight weeks in Cuba and was simply passing through Mexico, the abundance was overpowering after witnessing tremendous poverty.

“I don’t know what sort of projects or future ministries will come out of this,” Lohrmann said, “but I do find it troubling to live in a world where we have such affluence in this country, and that there are places in this world that have so little and that are living in situations that are pretty terrible.”

Lohrmann – who is married to the church’s pastor, the Rev. Rebekkah Lohrmann, and who will speak about his experiences Nov. 19 at the church – said he had three goals in mind when he applied for a $6,000 International Ministry Grant through the University of Chicago, where he is working on a Master of Divinity degree.

He wanted to immerse himself in a Spanish-speaking and vulnerable community, see the effects of the United States’ changed relationship to Cuba and observe the practice of religion in a secularized country.

Lohrmann did all three.

“I am of the opinion at this point of history in the United States that it’s valuable to have some experience speaking Spanish, and that’s something I regret not having before,” Lohrmann said. “I think one aspect of ministry is knowing where people come

from, so I wanted to immerse myself in their language and culture.”

At the same time, Lohrmann has heard discussions about increased secularization of the American culture – which he feels is neither good nor bad – and he wanted a firsthand look at a culture where secularization is present.

“What are the expressions of faith in a society who expressions have – at one time – been limited or even stifled?”

Lohrmann. “These are the main things I went into the country with.”

Through a friend, Lohrmann heard of The Mountain School in Guatemala that taught fundamental Spanish to non-Spanish speakers.

It’s located in the mountains on a former coffee plan-

tation in a rural, impoverished area that is “trying its best to move up the socioeconomic ladder,” Lohrmann said, while offering resources for women’s empowerment.

“When you’re at The Mountain School, you’re asked to speak only Spanish,” Lohrmann said, “even to your classmates, who also don’t speak Spanish.”

Lohrmann resided with a family in that community while attending school.

In Cuba, which Lohrmann visited from July 27 through Sept. 22, he rented a room from a family participating in a licensed program by the Cuban government that allowed families to earn extra income in this manner. While in Cuba, Lohrmann traveled by bus to Havana, Valle de Vinales, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Camagüey, Baracoa and Santiago de Cuba.

He enjoyed plenty of good jazz and learned what it’s like to travel through Cuba at 2:30 a.m. on a bus with no lights or air conditioning. Lohrmann was present when the U.S. flag was raised in Cuba for the first time since it was lowered in 1961, and he saw Pope Francis up-close Sept. 20 during the

pope’s three-day visit to Cuba.

What Lohrmann did not see, as he thought he might, was a “smashing down” on religiosity and people hiding their faith.

“You do have religious expression in Cuba, although it might not look like what we have in the United States,” Lohrmann said. “For instance, there was this evangelical church down the road from me that had services every day of the week – not just on Sundays – filled to the gills with people and loud music. I did not see any sort of government presence quelling that at all.”

In addition to Christians, Lohrmann also saw followers – both men and women – of the non-Christian religion Santeria walking around with shaved heads and white clothing as part of their spiritual journey, he said.

Of course, the main media focus was Pope Francis’ visit to Cuba. Footage of his visit was on TV from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Lohrmann said.

“It totally defied my expectations,” Lohrmann said.

“You can’t say faith isn’t important when you see something like that.”

Tom and Kim Jewett are the directors of this ministry, which has a mission of helping girls find and fulfill the purpose for which they were created.

For the past 15 years, The Women’s Center, 802 Liberty St. in Morris, has supplied diapers, wipes, food, clothing and much more. All items are graciously donated to help moms and their babies in need. Hours are 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday for The Women’s Center.

Also this past month, a quilt donated from The Log Cabin Quilters of Minooka was raffled. The winner of the quilt was Carrie Onsen of Coal City.

Coal City primed for trip to Marengo

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City’s football team is a fixture in the postseason, having made the playoffs 26 times in the past 29 years.

The Coalers’ first-round opponent in the Class 4A playoffs this year, Marengo, is making its first playoff appearance since 2004. However, the Indians are undefeated this year and will be hosting the Coalers (5-4), who reached the 4A semifinals last year before losing to Chicago Phillips. Coal City coach Lenny Onsen knows the situation isn’t ideal, but it beats the alternative.

“The kids are excited to be in the playoffs,” he said about the game, which starts at 7 p.m. Friday. “We’ve got some extra time on the field to get some reps in and just go out there and have some fun.”

There is some history between the two programs, as the Indians’ last unbeaten regular season came in 1997, when they beat Coal City in the first round of the playoffs.

Marengo quarterback Zach Knobloch, a senior, is 116 of 184 for 1,993 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

An all-around athlete, he set the IHSA 3-point record last basketball season with 167.

He did not play football as a junior, but came back this year. Junior running back Jarren Jackson has run 168 times for 1,156 yards and 14 TDs, while his brother Jarrell, a senior, has 40 catches for 882 yards and 14 touchdowns. Jarrell Jackson also plays defensive back and has committed to Illinois State next fall. Other threats for the Indians include seniore receiver Craiton Nice (45 catches, 794 yards, seven TDs) and running back Kyle Garza (489 rushing yards, 10 TDs). Garza also anchors the defense from his linebacker position.

“Offensively, they remind me a little bit of Manteno,” Onsen said. “They have some good athletes and we will have to be aware on every play. Our secondary will have to play well, but they have all year.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – For the first time since 2011, the Minooka football team has qualified for the playoffs.

The task won’t be easy for the Indians (5-4), as they take to the road to play 9-0 Huntley at 1 p.m. Saturday in Class 8A. But, Minooka, which beat a playoff team in Plainfield North on Friday to qualify, doesn’t seem to mind.

“One of the goals at the start of the year was for us to be a playoff team,” said Minooka coach Paul Forsythe, who will be making his playoff debut in his fourth year at the helm.

“We certainly would have liked to be in a better position, but the playoffs were the goal and here we are “Now, what we can control is how we prepare for the game.

The kids are excited to be in the playoffs, and playing on Saturday gives us an extra day to prepare, so we feel like we’re in pretty good shape.”

Forsythe said Huntley employs a similar offense to the Indians, running out of a shotgun with two running backs.

We have struggled the last three years on defense, but this year we have a lot of seniors with experience and that has helped.”

When Minooka has the ball, the offense runs through quarterback John Carnagio,

who has completed 158 of 276 passes for 1,953 yards and 14 touchdowns against just five interceptions. His main target is Isaiah Hill, who has 49 catches for 735 yards and eight TDs. Running back Jaccor Blakney has filled in for the graduated Nathan Gunn and produced 492 rushing yards and eight touchdowns to help complement the passing game, as well as catching 14 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown.

“Jaccor has really had a nice year,” Forsythe said. “I won’t say it’s a surprise to me, because I knew he had the talent. But, he has given us a presence in the running game and helped open up the pass, too.”

Forsythe feels the competition his team faced throughout the regular season will be a help now that the playoffs are here.

“We feel like we’re pretty well tested,” he said. “We beat a good Plainfield North team just to qualify for the playoffs, so we’re playing well right now.

But the playoffs are fun. It’s an unknown opponent so we’ll just see how we match up against them. We know they are fast, but it’s hard to gauge the speed from film.

“The kids are excited to get out there and see what they can do.”
