over the years and now families meet on the Grundy County Courthouse lawn, where they are judged in various age groups, including one for adults.

Prizes will be awarded in the following age groups: ages infant to 2, ages 3 to 4, ages 5 to 6, ages 7 to 8, ages 9 to 10, ages 11 to 12, and ages 13 and older.

Adults are encouraged to come in costume, as well, to be judged in the 13 and older category.

In case of bad weather, the judging will be moved to Eagles Hall, across from the courthouse, according to a news release from the Lions Club.

Those wishing to participate in the costume contest are asked to gather at 4 p.m.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD MORRIS – Safe family fun is the goal of the annual Morris Lions Club Halloween Costume contest, and this year is no different.

Immediately following the contest families are encouraged to trick or treat at downtown businesses and meander over to First Presbyterian Church for its Trunk or Treat event.

“It’s a safe fun way for kids to get excited for Halloween,” said Judy Miller of the Morris Lions Club. “Parents get so creative with the costumes, and this gives the kids another chance to wear them.”

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said the event has become a tradition for many families, and it’s part of what makes Morris special.

“The program has been supported for years by the Lions Club and downtown merchants,” Kopczick said.

“The addition of Trunk-orTreat at the First Presbyterian Church is a nice addition to an already successful event.”

Miller said one of the goals of the Morris Lions Club is to host family oriented events in the community.

The club also hosts an annual Easter egg hunt each spring that invites area families out.

The Halloween event has been going on for decades.

It originally was a Halloween parade that ended at Center School where the children’s costumes were judged for creativity and awarded prizes.

by Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies Saturday on charges of possession of delivery of meth precursor(s), possession or delivery of materials (not precursors) with intent to manufacture and possession of hypodermic syringes and needles, possession of drug equipment and driving with a suspended license. He was given a court date of Nov. 16.

• Mala D. Diloreto, 29, of Ohio, was arrested by Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies Saturday on a charge of possession of hypodermic syringes and needles.

She was given a court date of Nov. 16.

• Cody R. Miles, 18, of Gardner, was arrested by Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies Sunday on charges of aggravated battery.

He was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

• Noel T. Cottrell, 21, of Joliet, was arrested by Grundy County Sheriff’s deputies Sunday on a charge of aggravated battery and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

• Wacey W. Walters, 23, of Wilmington, was arrested by Morris police Saturday on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. He also was charged with driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08 percent, illegal transportation of alcohol by a driver and improper parking on the roadway. He was given a court date of Nov. 23.

Tim Ryan, of “A Man in Recovery: From Dope to Hope,” made that clear Monday night in the Morris Community High School Auditorium at a heroin forum sponsored by the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office and the No Tolerance Task Force. The event is aimed to raise awareness of heroin use in Grundy County.

“You need to pull people up and help them,” Ryan said.

“Heroin is destroying your community. The youngest addict I’ve dealt with is 12, the oldest is 78. The drug knows no race, age, color or creed.”

Ryan is a recovering addict, nearly three years clean. But it all started when he was 14 and began drinking.

He tried cocaine at 15 years old and said he fell in love.

After dropping out of college, where he sold drugs, he ended up smoking an ounce of cocaine a day.

At one point he became clean for a year. That was until he was helping a friend move, and a roommate asked him if he wanted to try a bag of heroin. He tried one bag, and said he was addicted to heroin for 12 years.

On his seventh overdose, he snorted several bags, then shot up four or five bags. He ended up driving and putting four people in the hospital.

A paramedic said he was dead when they administered Narcan three times without working. The paramedic then tried it under his tongue and found a slight pulse. After he was out of the hospital, he spent seven years in prison.

“Prison broke me,” Ryan said. “It humbled me. It saved my life.”

But his son died from heroin use, and it all started with marijuana.

His son never shot up heroin.

Ryan said it’s a myth that people only die from injecting heroin. Ryan’s son snorted it and died. His friends knew he was

overdosing and did nothing.

“They just propped him up on the sofa and went back in the basement and did more drugs,” Ryan said. “They put him in their trunk an hour later and drove around before taking him to the hospital.”

Ryan didn’t learn that story until his son’s friend, Gary, ended up at Ryan’s recovery group and told him the story of the night his son died. He agreed to be Gary’s sponsor.

He said addicts all have a common bond.

“I’ll do anything in my power to help somebody,” Ryan said.

Ryan’s program, A Man In Recovery, has now put hundreds of people into treatment.

Ryan said we need to stop with the stigma of heroin and talk about it. He commended the Ridgely family for sharing their story of losing their daughter.

“Brittany was amazing,” Angela Ridgely said. “(Her son) Patrick was her everything.”

Auditorium part of plans to involve community Upcoming Events

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Five years after the first play took the stage in the new Coal City High School auditorium, the district is looking at more ways to use the space for the community.

“When we went to referendum for the new auditorium we promised to use it for the community,” Coal City School District 1 Superintendent Kent Bugg said.

The district named Jack Micetich as the part-time auditorium supervisor, adding to his role as part-time math teacher for the district this year, and allowed him to grow the use of the auditorium for community events.

“The auditorium management has evolved over the last few years. It was originally split over many positions,” Micetich said. “Many people don’t realize the auditorium is used three to four times a day on average.”

Using the auditorium for school plays and musicals are only two aspects of how the 800seat theater is used.

Micetich schedules use for the space between meetings and fine arts groups, such as chorus and band.

Bugg said Micetich seemed like the right choice for the position, which he said needed

Jack Micetich, Coal City High School auditorium supervisor said they’ve already received calls asking about rental of The Lion King costumes used in last week’s middle school production of “The Lion King”. someone who not only is passionate about fine arts but also about the auditorium.

“No one is more passionate about the auditorium than Jack,” Bugg said.

The supervisor position involves far more than just scheduling shows, though. The district has built many props for its various productions as well as created costuming for each one. Those props and costumes, with proper management, can add to the financial success of the auditorium by being rent-

ed to other schools who are interested in putting on the same performance.

“There is a huge market for theater,” Micetich said. “A lot of places, like us, are on a budget. They call around to see who can rent them what they need within their budget. This week we have two ‘Beauty and the Beast’ rentals going out.”

As they wrapped up ‘The Lion King’ last week, calls were already coming in from schools around the country, seeking rental information on the cos-

tumes Micetich and his creative team made for the middle school production.

“Eight schools from around the country have already contacted us about our costumes.

We are fortunate to have a creative team here,” he said. “It would make me sick if we just threw them in storage and never looked at them again.”

He said one school that contacted him was from California, although most of the schools are in Illinois. But the auditorium was built for more than just

Micetich has scheduled some shows in November to see how the community responds.

In November, the auditorium will host a Veterans Day event, a night of music with the Joliet American Legion Band, as well as a movie night and other events.

Bugg said the district is starting off slow hosting events to see what the community would like to see more of.

Micetich said they will continue to schedule events and add more as the project grows.

The family movie night is set for Nov. 30, with a showing of “Elf,” and will continue being offered one Monday each month.

Morris High looks at improvements Possible projects to school building might improve heating efficiency

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A meeting Monday of the District 101 School Board Building and Grounds Committee touched on projects recently paid for or completed, and potential upcoming ones.

This year is considered a down year in spending when it comes to building and grounds, according to District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran and Morris Community High School Building and Grounds Director Steve Lutz, but both said they’re happy with the amount of work being done.

“In an off (spending) year, we got a lot done,” Lutz said.

A majority of the building and grounds-related projects have been paid for at a combined cost of $134,409, with only a couple small expenditures for landscaping equipment left. The most expensive project this year was new sheds for $49,950.

Other projects included an industrial tech spray booth at $10,000 and an update of campus signs that cost $15,000.

Maintenance on school parking lots came in a couple thousand less than expected, at under $12,000.

The school also replaced drinking fountains at a cost of $4,475 and the water heating system in the 1950s wing at a cost of $7,500.

“We’ve gotten good feedback. A lot of people are happy with the drinking fountains,” Lutz said.

Looking toward the future, Lutz shared a new possibility for upgrading the school’s decades-old boiler system.

Lutz said he is bouncing ideas off professionals in the field after the school decided not to pursue a purchase of two modern boilers because the price for removal and installation came in high.

Although an estimated cost in not yet available, Lutz said it would run much more efficiently than the school’s outdated one. The boilers would operate through a control system.

“It’s just theoretical right now, but experts I’ve talked to say it’s a viable option,” Lutz said.

The committee also discussed the possibility of installing a new roof above the school’s pool in fiscal year 2017 at an estimated cost of $150,000.

Indoor pools make a building structures prone to metal corrosion, Lutz said.

When asked by Board President Denny Best if the pool is always covered, Lutz said it was because it saves on chemicals cost; saves on heat costs by keeping the heat in the 83 degree water; and saves on maintenance. At some point, the roof will need to be replaced.

The committee talked about the possibility of finishing a tile replacement project in the upper and lower 1960s wing classrooms at an estimated cost of $175,000.

“It’s not inexpensive by any means – but, man, it looks so much better when it’s done,” Halloran said.

Born: Jan. 2, 1922; in Cisco, IL Died: Oct. 25, 2015; in Morris, IL Robert “Bob” E. Cleek, 93, of Morris, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015, at Regency Care in Morris. Born Jan. 2, 1922, in Cisco, Illinois, he was the son of the late Alvin and Mary (Wood) Cleek.

Bob was the youngest of six siblings. He married Erlene “Bonnie” Rayburn on May 27, 1944, who preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 2015. They farmed all their lives in Kankakee, Will, and Grundy Counties, spending most of their married life on their farm in the Mazon/Verona area.

Bob was a hard-working man, supplementing his farming by working for the railroad and at Caterpillar for many years and also as a heavy equipment operator for O’Brien Construction. After retiring from farming, Bob would continue to stay busy and work as a grain inspector for many of the local elevators until he reached the age of 90.

Bob is survived by his son, Ronald E. (Sherry) Cleek; and daughter, Sherril (Craig) Herrick, all of Morris; seven grandchildren, Adeanna McCormick of Chariton, IA, Denette Barrington of Phoenix, AZ, Duane (Connie) Cleek of Chariton, IA, Brian (Priscilla) Cleek of Morris, Kelly (Kevin) McConnell of Morris, Carey (John) Hubert of Coal City, and Jill (Adam) Steffes of Coal City; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Monnie (Cleek) Twichell and Patricia (Rayburn) Shork.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; his parents; his son, Dennis; and siblings, Lena Kate Walters, Lewis Cleek, Carl Cleek, Bert Cleek, and Mae Twichell.

Visitation for Robert will be on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 200 E. Jackson Street in Morris. MORRIS – The theme of this year’s Grundy County Growth Conference (GC2) is: “What do we value and how do we pay for it?”

The nonprofit agencies, organizations, schools and governments in Grundy County – like everyone else – have seen a decrease in state and federal support over the years, and it isn’t expected to return to previous levels.

That leaves us looking for ways to do more with less and looking for innovative ways to pay for services.

The purpose of the GC2 is not to tell local decision makers what decisions to make.

Instead, we bring topic experts to town to share their expertise, share tips and inspire local leaders to take actions that best fit their organization.

This year’s event is no exception.

Our opening speaker is Judith Gethner of Illinois Partners. She will present the findings of research that they have conducted around the state about “What do we value?”

If we know what we value, we can better prioritize spending to provide those services.

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com PARK FOREST – After winning handily in the first game Monday night, the Morris volleyball team looked like it would easily reach the Class 3A Rich East Regional semifinals with a win over Chicago Agricultural Science.

The Redskins rolled to a 2511 win in the first game, dominating in all facets of the game.

However, the Cyclones were not eager to have their season end so soon and came back strong in the second game.

Morris never led in Game 2 and fell, 25-23, before rallying to win Game 3, 25-19 to take the match and advance to Tuesday’s semifinal against Lincoln-Way West.

“This was a lot tighter than it needed to be,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “It seemed like we won the first game easy, then the girls thought they could just coast. Those girls on the other team didn’t want their season to end, so they kept playing hard.

“In the first game, they made most of the mistakes and we capitalized. In the second, we were making a lot of mistakes and they capitalized. We got back to playing better in the third game and were able to pull it out.”

The first game was all Morris, which improved to 14-172 on the season. Ag Science scored the first point of the game, but it was the only lead they had. Morris countered by taking a 6-2 lead, which eventually ballooned to 10-3 and then 14-5. Late in the game, with the score 21-11, Kaylin Korte got one of her team-high 25 kills, then went to the service line and served two straight aces to put her team ahead, 24-11.

Janelle Brehm then delivered one of her 12 kills to end the game.

Game 2 was a different story entirely, as Ag Science jumped to a quick 5-0 lead and kept the pressure on. Morris answered with a few spurts and tied it at 10, 11, 16 and 17, but could never take the lead.

“It seemed like we won the first game easy, then the girls thought they could just coast. Those girls on the other team didn’t want their season to end, so they kept playing hard.”

“Sometimes our girls are expecting Kaylin or Janelle to get a kill and forget to play defense,” Lafond said. “You have to play until the whistle blows.”

Morris went ahead, 6-1, in the early going of the third game, behind aces from Brehm and Jasmine Cook and a kill by Korte. Another ace by Brehm later on gave Morris a 14-8 lead, and an ace by Ashley Hood made it 18-11.

Morris got two kills each

by Korte and Brehm down the stretch to stave off any comeback attempt by the Cyclones.

Besides the 25 kills, Korte had four digs, four aces and three blocks, while Brehm added seven digs and a block.

Addison Polite had 11 assists and three digs, while Hood had 16 assists, seven digs and three aces. Veronica Johnson and Ryan Friend each had four blocks.

“One thing I was glad about was that we came back in Game 2,” Lafond said. “It would have been easy for us to just fall back on our heels and lose 25-11 or something like that. But, we kept fighting and made a game of it and kind of carried that over into the third game.

“We have to play better [Tuesday]. We have to treat it like we did the Yorkville match (a win on the Foxes’ floor on senior night last week). We know that Lincoln-Way West is going to want to beat us just as bad as Yorkville did. If that team shows up, we can play with anybody.”

“Zach Chapman ran a gutsy race placing in the top five and being an All-Regional runner. As first-year runners, Jordan Olson, Zach Guzman and Max Dudley keep getting better and better.

“Next week will more than likely be our last – we will enjoy the extra week of practice our runners earned and run 14 personal records next week. That’s the goal.”

CRETE – Both the Morris boys and girls cross country teams advanced to the Class 2A Normal U-High Sectional this weekend by placing high in the Crete-Monee Regional on Saturday.

This is the ninth straight sectional advancement for the girls, who finished fifth, and sixth straight for the boys, who took third.

The Redskins boys finished with 89 points, behind champion Lincoln-Way West (32) and LaSalle-Peru (54).

Junior Zach Chapman finished fifth with a time of 17:02 for Morris, while classmate Jordan Olson was 11th in 17:15.

Sophomore Zach Guzman was 20th in 17:43, followed by senior Al Alvarez (24th, 18:00), senior Max Dudley (29th, 18:20), junior Gage Eisenbeis (38th, 19:28) and sophomore Wes Diaz (44th, 19:51).

In the girls race, Morris finished with 112 points, behind Lincoln-Way West (42), Illiana Christian (84), Ottawa (85) and LaSalle-Peru (96).

Junior Sabrina Baftiri led Morris, placing 13th with a time of 21:26, while sophomore Madi Mayberry was 22nd in 21:52.

“We knew this was going to be tough. since we lost to them 6-2 earlier in the season,” Morris coach David Valdivia said.

“We did great in the first half as we shut down their crossing and getting ball to their forwards. However, the injuries prevailed when our sophomore keeper, Mac VanOudt, went down due to a collision.

“Geneseo was able to get a ball in due to a controversial hand ball that the referee did not see. I hate to lose that way, but if the referee didn’t see it, then there is not much we can do.

“As a team, we still needed to score, and we lacked at finishing when we did have opportunities. I am going to miss these seniors as they grew up to what was expected.”

At the bridge table, a defender’s second card in the trump suit can both be a friend and govern how he should play -- as in this deal.

West is defending against four hearts. He leads the diamond nine.

East wins with his jack, cashes the diamond ace, and continues with the diamond king. After South ruffs with his heart queen, how should West plan the defense?

When a fit is found, both partners can include shortage points (or follow the guidelines of the Losing Trick Count). When North raises hearts, South can add one point for each doubleton, getting him up to 19 support (high-card plus shortage) points – enough for his jump to game. (Alternatively, his hand has only five losers: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and one club.

This is the number for a jump to game opposite a single raise.)

Should West overruff declarer?

With king-doubleton, yes; but what about king-third?

Now it primarily depends upon the second card in the suit. If it is relatively high – typically at least the eight – the defender should not overruff, in the hope that that card will be promoted as a winner.

In this deal, if West overruffs and, say, shifts to a spade, South wins that trick, draws trumps, and claims. But if West calmly discards, he will eventually take two trump tricks, with K-10-4 sitting behind A-J-8-7-2.

That seems to be easy, but as you know, bridge loves exceptions.
