Hospice volunteers deserve thanks Hospice is a philosophy of care for a person who is in final stages of a terminal illness.

Hospice is professionally directed care designed to enhance the quality of life as the end of life draws near.

These services enable a person to die a dignified death through pain and symptom control, alongside spiritual and emotional support.

Not only are services directed toward the patient, but also his or her family members and loved ones.

Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice is licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health as a volunteer hospice.

We are a community-based, nonprofit organization seeking to improve the quality of life of our community members who are in the final stages of life.

We have 15 people on our board of directors, as well as

We work in conjunction with United Way of Grundy County and host two fundraisers per year.

Our fundraisers include hosting a Cruise Night in June and a Draw Down in November.

This year’s Draw Down is from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Gardner American Legion.

Tickets are $50 for two and proceeds go to Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice.

I’d like to take this opportunity to describe something to the readers that is near and dear to my heart.

As the executive director of Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice, National Hospice Month is a time that

is very important to the organization and myself.

National Hospice Month has been celebrated every year since 1978 to promote public awareness of hospice.

In 1991, the United States’ Congress, President Bush, and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Council designated November as National Hospice and Palliative Care Month.

The main goal of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month is to draw focus and attention toward the positive workings of hospice and palliative care organizations around the country.

During this month, I’d like to give a special “Thank you” to each of our hospice volunteers.

As a volunteer-based organization, Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice would be lost without the help and service of our volunteers.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Dressed in her Rainbow Dash My Little Pony costume, 3-yearold Chloe Berry of Minooka looked eagerly at the lines of siren-blaring fire and police vehicles, followed by floats and children who threw candy every few feet down the street.

As her bag filled with sweet treats, she found her favorite purple Skittles for a mid-afternoon snack.

Ghouls, goblins, princesses and superheroes lined the streets in Minooka Saturday afternoon for the seventh annual Halloween Parade sponsored by the village of Minooka. The parade began near Minooka Elementary School on Coady Drive and went south on Wabena Avenue and ended at Minooka Community High School.

Even though the skies were gray and the wind was blustery, hundreds of people from Minooka and surrounding areas came to support this unique small town tradition.

“We just moved to Minooka last year from Naperville, and so this is our first Halloween parade. My older daughter is walking with her new Girl Scout troop,” Brittney Berry said. “It’s wonderful to see the kids and neighborhood involved. We love our new quaint little town.”

The Minooka Community High School Color Guard and Band performed Saturday at the Halloween Parade. Most of the students who played an instrument dressed up in masks and full costume.

Musclow said there were 23 entries, with around 400 people actually walking in the parade. She was thrilled the Minooka Community High

School Band could perform, because in years past, the parade conflicted with competitions.

Dadurday Saturday MORRIS – Morris Library on Saturday hosted its first Dadurday Saturday event.

The lapsit story time gives dads a chance to visit the library with their children for some book-loving fun.

This lapsit is in addition to the traditional lapsits held during the week when many dads are at work.

Morris YMCA Spooktacular gets big turnout

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Area kids got a chance to dress up and play in their Halloween costumes Saturday afternoon, and even do a little trick-or-treating, as the Morris YMCA hosted its first Spooktacular Event.

Morris resident Mindy Waite brought her two children and said they were having a nice time. Waite said she enjoys taking them out to events when she can.

“It’s nice to get outside and have some fun and make new friends,” Waite said. “They love dressing up, and they’re all adorable.”

After one of Waite’s daughters, the Maleficent-costumed Riley Pininski, 11, finished throwing ping pong balls into pumpkin Bozo buckets, Pininski was asked what she liked best about the event.

“Getting candy,” Riley said with a smile.

Several other children at the event had similar responses, and there was plenty of candy to go around. However, the YMCA also had healthy options for fun.

Kicking off the day in the parking lot behind the YMCA was an event called Hip Hop Fit, where kids and their families could team up to learn how to dance hip-hop for fun and exercise.

Pininski attended the Morris YMCA’s Spooktacular Event as Maleficent.

Monster Dash came next, which was a run around the downtown block. The rest of the afternoon was Trunk-orTreat, where local businesses and services participated in opening the trunks of their vehicles for the children for candy and games.

The rain predicted for the day held back the first couple of hours, but signs of sprinkles spooked away many visitors.

The Grundy County Command Center also was at the event, as were several businesses, including Morris Hospital and Morris MOPS, or Mothers of Preschoolers.

Cindy Johnson of Morris represented MOPS at Trunkor-Treat and brought her two young daughters, Kyleen and Kesli.

Both girls were in Halloween finery, and one of them left with a little chocolate smeared on her face.

“This is really fun,” Cindy Johnson said. “I’m glad that they do stuff like this.”

Morris resident Jessica Craig brought her 2-year-old son, Landon, and said she appreciates what the YMCA brings to town.

She and her son are members, she said, and her son especially enjoys the classes for kids, as well as the open gym time.

Highway committee talks no motor fuel tax

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Highway Committee heard last week from the Illinois Department of Transportation that officials should not expect any of the motor fuel tax money owed to the county by the state to be available until at least next year.

“We got a letter from IDOT telling us to continue to put the documents required together using estimates on last year’s motor fuel tax numbers,” County Engineer Craig Cassem said during Thursday’s committee meeting.

He said contracts would not be entered until the money is received, despite any plans being submitted.

“The county gets about $70,000 a month from motor fuel tax, but that stopped at the end of June,” he said.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office said in a statement that the state does not have appropriation authority to distribute the money collected by the motor fuel tax to municipalities because the General Assembly has failed to pass a balanced budget.

The Illinois Motor Fuel Tax Fund is financed from taxes on fuel sold in the state of Illinois.

The fund gets 19 cents a gallon on regular gasoline and an additional 2.5 cents from diesel fuel, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

Of the funds collected, 54.4 percent is distributed back to municipalities, counties and townships.

While the majority of that money, 49.1 percent of it goes

to the municipalities based on their population; 18.27 percent goes to counties other than Cook, which receives 16.74 percent.

The county’s percentage is based on the number of miles of road in their jurisdiction.

The townships or road districts get 15.89 percent based on the number of vehicles registered within their district.

Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor said Friday what the lack of motor fuel tax funds will mean for the county depends on the duration of non-payment.

“We’re lucky enough that we can operate for a while without the income, but it is not sustainable long term,” Pryor said.

Gardner Mayor Mike Serena said Friday his village also is one of the lucky ones, as it has no projects slated at this time that would use motor fuel tax funds.

“We don’t do motor fuel tax improvements every year,” he said. “Unless they hold several years we will be OK.” Serena said because the village receives a smaller amount, just under $3,200 in May, officials save those funds for three to four years and spend it on a larger project.

He said the reason for doing them on the three-to-fouryear cycle is for the cost savings when purchasing a larger amount of materials.

Cassem said Friday that a couple of the townships in Grundy County have low balances and will not be able to do any road projects without the money from the fuel tax.

Others, he said, still have a balance.

Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders dies of cancer

day, the team said.

Morris ends football season on a high note

roesterle@shawmedia.com LASALLE – The season as a whole didn’t turn out the way the Morris football team wanted. Watching the playoffs from the outside is not something that the Redskins are accustomed to.

Although the playoffs were not a possibility on Friday night, Morris still went out on a positive note, dominating LaSalle-Peru on both sides of the ball en route to a 40-0 victory.

There was plenty of praise to go around. The offensive line cleared the way for the running game to overpower the Cavaliers defense. Keagan Sobol led the multi-pronged rushing attack with 103 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries.

Michael Gerischer ran 12 times for 83 yards and a touchdown, Michael Feeney picked up 26 yards on nine carries, while quarterback Ricky Del Favero started for the first time and ran four times for 26 yards and scored a touchdown. Tommy Balentine ran four times for 29 yards and Will Ringer got three carries for nine yards.

Del Favero didn’t throw often, but when he did, he was productive. The junior completed two of his three passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Delaney Stutzki for a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter and, in the second, connected with Jake Webb for an 18-yard score.

“Our defense has been very good all year,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “In most of our losses, our defense still was very good. We struggled with our offense and that put the defense in bad spots quite a bit. We didn’t do that tonight and our defense showed what it can do.”

Ringer was a mainstay in the middle of the defense as a linebacker all season, and he said there was no way the Redskins were just going to go through the motions in this game.

“Guys on this team never take days off,” he said. “This program means too much to us to do something like that.

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – Consistency is a concept regularly cited as necessary by football coaches at all levels, but for Coal City’s Lenny Onsen, it is more than just coach speak.

There have been times in 2015 when Onsen has seen his Coalers look perfectly capable of playing with elite Class 3A and 4A competition – the kind of competition they will face Friday at 9-0 Marengo in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

Then there have been times when the Coalers have made the kind of mistakes that have doomed them to an 0-4 record against playoff teams this season.

Eliminating those mistakes, Onsen says, is the No. 1 key for the Coalers to pull off a first-round upset and make a run in the playoffs.

“It’s been a lack of consistency and making plays – we’re just not making plays,” Onsen said. “Every phase of the game just not clicking on the same page. We’re just not good enough right now. We’ve got to work hard and get to be.”

Two of the Coalers’ four losses – 56-13 to Plano and 34-6 to Manteno – would seem to indicate they have played at a level well short of that needed to succeed in the playoffs.

Coal City also lost by a fourpoint margin, 7-3, when it took on a Lisle team that finished 7-2.

The Coalers allowed 158 points this season, which was the lowest total in the Interstate Eight Large, and their defensive efforts in the Wilmington and Lisle games could be seen as indicators that they can stay in games with tough opponents.

But even on that side of the ball, Onsen believes more consistency is needed for them to have a chance.

“In some of these games, we’re playing good defense,

but then it’ll be third-and-10 and we’ll have a breakdown,” Onsen said. “Like the one drive in the Lisle (game) where they scored, it was a third-and-10.

If we make the play, break up a pass, stop them from getting the first down, then they don’t score. … The Wilmington game, fourth-and-12, you know, (Nick) Hawkins goes for 17 for a touchdown. … OK, it’s a third-and-short for us, and then we’ll have a silly penalty – just things like that.”

For Coal City’s Week 9 opponent, Seneca, the results have been anything but consistent – at least in a positive sense – as the Fighting Irish lost each of their last six games by at least 22 points.

But as the Irish closed out an injury-riddled season against three playoff opponents, coach Ted O’Boyle says that their fight was regularly there, even if the wins were not.

“It says a lot about the character of some guys that know that you don’t have a tomorrow no matter what happens in a game – there’s no playoffs, there’s no regionals, there’s nothing when you have the record that we have,” O’Boyle said. “You don’t tell it by the scoreboard because we’re playing Wilmington, we’re playing Plano, we’re playing Coal City, but effort-wise, the last three games were as good an effort as we’ve given all season.”

When to overruff; when to discard

Last week, we looked at deals in which a defender had a chance to ruff in. Most of the time, it was right to ruff; but not always.

This week, we move to overruffing. Occasionally, some guesswork will be needed. However, assuming that if you do not overruff, your high honor will still be a winner later, this basic guideline works much more often than not: Overruff with any singleton, doubleton king-low, doubleton queen-low, and with tripleton queen-low-low unless partner rates to be short in the suit; otherwise, discard.

Apply that to this deal. West is defending against four hearts. He leads the diamond nine. East wins with his queen, cashes the diamond ace, and continues with the diamond king. When South ruffs with the heart 10, should West overruff or discard?

I agree with East’s one-diamond opening. With such a good suit, the hand was too strong for a weak two.

He needed little from partner to be making three no-trump. South’s overcall showed a weak hand with a decent seven-card suit, and North bid what he hoped his partner could make.

The rule says to overruff, and that works. East-West take two hearts and two diamonds. However, it must be admitted that if West does not overruff, the contract might still fail. South will play a heart to dummy’s ace, return a spade to his ace, and then have to guess whether to lead a low heart (the king is now singleton) or the queen (the jack is now alone). But why give South a chance to get it right?

Eating fish brings greater health benefits than risks Notice to readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in March 2012.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve been hearing for years that eating fish is healthy. But I also hear that mercury and other poisons can be in fish. I like the taste of fish, but should I seek it or avoid it?

Dear Reader: Questions from readers so often ask about the benefits versus the risks of lifestyle practices, or medical tests and treatments. That’s because most things have both benefits and risks – and eating fish is no exception.

Fish ranks way up there on the list of healthful foods we should be eating. It’s an excellent source of protein, and its healthy oils protect against

But depending on the species and the water it was harvested from, fish comes with a catch. Nearly all fish and shellfish do contain traces of mercury, and mercury is a toxic metal. If too much gets into your body, it can be damaging – particularly to the brain.

As small fish are eaten by larger fish up the food chain, concentrations of mercury increase. Thus large, predatory, deep-ocean fish tend to contain the highest levels.

Examples include shark, swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel.

Please don’t misunderstand me: I’m not saying it’s unhealthy to eat a meal of these fish – I had a swordfish dinner just last week. But I’m careful about how often I eat these fish, in contrast to those with less mercury.

Most adults can safely eat about 12 ounces (two 6-ounce servings) of a variety of cooked seafood a week.

This advice does not include the large, predatory ocean fish mentioned above, which should be enjoyed only occasionally. Also, pay attention to local seafood advisories about contamination.

Both the benefits and risks of eating fish may be higher in women who are pregnant

or may become pregnant, nursing mothers and children ages 12 and younger. It is a paradox. On one hand, babies in the womb and young children with growing brains benefit from the omega-3 fatty acids in fish. On the other hand, mercury and other toxins probably have greater negative effects in those same growing brains.

For such women and children, 12 ounces a week of fish is considered safe if they: • Generally choose fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury, like shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock and catfish.

• Eat no more than 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore (white) tuna per week, because it has more mercury than canned light tuna.

Fish oil supplements, of course, contain the “good” omega-3 fatty acids but generally no mercury. (Caveat: Check with a reliable source such as Consumers Union about testing of fish oil supplements for mercury.

The Food and Drug Administration does not check the quality with which supplements are manufactured.) So, fish oil supplements theoretically might be a good idea for pregnant women and young children. However, I’m not aware of any solid evidence that pregnant women or young children benefit from such supplements.
