• Sarah E. Strainus, 32, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Oct. 23 on a felony theft charge for allegedly stealing cash, credit card and jewelry from a Gardner residence.

• Charles J. Headley, 39, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Oct. 23 on charges of criminal damage to government property for allegedly committing damage to the jail’s fingerprint scanner.

• Jeremiah R. Neikirk, 34, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Oct. 23 on a Grundy County warrant for contempt of court.

• Howard D, Hall, 28 of Marseilles, was arrested by Grundy County sheriff’s deputies on Oct. 22 for possession of cannabis.

He also was issued a citation for speeding.

Mark D. Christenson, loving husband of Cindy Reid Christenson, 904 E. Main St, Morris, and formerly of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly at home Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at the age of 51.

Born and raised in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Mark graduated from Badger High School. He was a member of FFA where he won numerous awards for raising Champion Cattle. Mark loved being a farmer from a young age with his grandfather on the Curran Family Farm on Highway 50 in Lake Geneva. Mark was employed as a roofer for several years, the last company being Southern Lakes Roofing Co. All of his life, Mark enjoyed farming, hunting, and fishing. He was also an avid NASCAR and Green Bay Packers fan along with enjoying International Harvester and Farmall Tractors.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Reid Christenson; stepson, Tyler Reid; and sister, Michelle Christenson; uncle, James “Louie” Curran of Virginia; in-laws, Tom and Esther Reid; brothers-inlaw, Mike Reid and Ron (Tammy) Reid, all of Ohio; and Chuck and Char Reid of Wisconsin; sister-inlaw, Debbie (Rusty) Bell of California; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

• Alan James Hubbard, 25, was arrested by the Illinois State Police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Oct. 23 on a warrant for contempt of court.

• Eric J. Conda, 32, was arrested by the Illinois State Police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Oct. 23 on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis more than 30 grams.

• Christopher W. Barnes, 30, was arrested by Morris police and booked into the Grundy County Jail on Oct. 23 on a charge of domestic battery.

• Aaron Carl, 25, of Channahon, was arrested by Morris police Oct. 23 on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

He also was cited for speeding and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He posted bond and was released with a Nov. 17 court date.

• Amber Unland, 24, of Romeoville, was arrested by Morris police Oct. 23 on a charge of assault. She posted bond and was released with a Nov. 17 court date.

• Ruby A. Pena, 26, of Minooka, was arrested by Morris police Oct. 22 on a charge of retail theft. She posted bond and was released.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MAZON – Beheaded dolls, demented clowns, a wall covered in cockroaches falling toward you – whatever your biggest fear is, there is a chance it can be found at Mazon Dungeon of Terror.

“Think about what scares you, clowns, roaches, claustrophobia, that’s what we think about when we design the dungeon,” said Deb Punke, the dungeon’s head creator.

The pitch-black halls open to rooms of terror filled with zombies, electrocutions and an eery fortune teller who will tell you what her cards say about your future.

This is the 15th year the dungeon has scared those who dare to enter the 5,000-squarefoot store front, which once was a butcher shop, Punke said.

The scare is all for a good cause. Money raised keeps the dungeon operating and is a major fundraiser for the Mazon Fire Department each year. The event has helped buy trucks and tools for the fire department.

“It’s fun, it’s the best fundraiser,” Punke said. “We get about 5,000 people annually,

The dungeon is volunteer-based and no one is paid for their haunting skills.

Darryl Punke, director of operations, said about 30 volunteer actors fill the dungeon for the 14 nights they are open, and local restaurants

donate food to feed the crew after a long night of terrifying their guests.

While the layout is changed every year to give thrill seekers something new, many actors remain the same even, though their characters do not.

“You get to do something you normally wouldn’t do,” Clavey said. “I’m more professional and mature, but

when I’m in costume I don’t have to act that way.”

Clavey, who often starts his taunting before guests even enter the dungeon, enjoys finding a group scared of his character so he can follow it throughout the attraction, popping in when he’s least expected.

“I’m an outside entertainer, but if they dislike me I stalk them throughout,” Clavey said.

Sheriff Callahan believes he’s most qualified for job

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – A 31-year veteran of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, Kevin Callahan proudly touts his lifelong experience in law enforcement.

Beginning as a Grundy County patrol deputy in 1983, Callahan advanced through the department’s ranks – from patrol deputy, to patrol sergeant, to investigator, to deputy sheriff in 2004, when he was made second in command to Sheriff Terry Marketti.

In January 2013, after Marketti’s sudden death, the Grundy County Board appointed Callahan sheriff so he could fulfill the 22 months remaining in Marketti’s term.

Now, with the general election less than two weeks away, the Democrat is fighting to retain his role as the Grundy County Sheriff. Callahan faces

Republican opponent Ken Briley.

Callahan’s 31-year career in law enforcement is the bedrock of his political campaign, and it’s what makes him the best Kevin candidate for Grun- Callahan dy County Sheriff, he said. If elected, he promises to maintain the same caliber of service the department has delivered for decades.

“My record speaks for itself,” Callahan said.

He is vying for the position now, but the Grundy County native said he never expected to become sheriff.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from St. Xavi-

er College, Callahan embarked on his career as an officer, realizing how much he enjoyed day-to-day police work.

He spent the next two decades patrolling Grundy County and investigating all manner of local crimes, from heinous murders to low-level thefts.

“Out of my 31-year career, that’s the best part of the job,” he said.

When he transitioned to chief deputy in 2004, Callahan said he embraced his new duties and learned about the administrative aspects of managing a department while working alongside Marketti.

Still, there was a steep learning curve when he stepped into Marketti’s position, Callahan said.

Facilitating union contract negotiations, dealing with oversight committees and drafting the department’s budget proved difficult at times for the

lifetime officer.

“There’s been challenges the last 21 months, but I’ve adapted and worked through them,” Callahan said.

While Callahan welcomes change, he believes the Grundy Sheriff’s Department already provides a quality service to residents, collaborates well with surrounding agencies and hires accountable, ethical employees.

He sees no reason to change that.

“Things are working good. I’d love to keep this department going in the same direction,” Callahan said.

He added that he is always open to improving the department and would continually evaluate how to best manage resources. It’s a challenge he already faced when the county asked all departments to shrink budgets by about 10 percent for next fiscal year.

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – With 33 years of criminal justice experience, Ken Briley seeks to be a force of change within the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department.

The Minooka resident’s career began in 1981, at age 18, when he took a job with the Illinois Department of Corrections. Briley spent the next 24 years with IDOC in various capacities – as a correctional officer, corrections captain,

commander of operations and eventually, the warden of Stateville Correctional Center.

partments and the Emergency Management Director for the village of Minooka.

The Republican seeks to add another title to his career list – Grundy County sheriff. He will battle Democrat Kevin Callahan in the general election, less than 10 days away.

If elected, Briley pledges to make many changes to the department. He believes his diverse background in criminal justice, law enforcement and emergency management make him uniquely qualified for the

position and the best candidate for the job.

“The people of Grundy County want change, and I believe I have the experience needed to bring positive change,” Briley said.

Becoming a police officer was a childhood dream and professional goal for Briley.

Parks committee OKs backstop for Deer Ridge Park

nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A plan to purchase a backstop for Deer Ridge Park unanimously was approved Friday by the Morris Parks & Annexation Committee.

Mayor Richard Kopczick said the backstop costs more than $3,000 and will be installed by the public works department.

“It’s not going to be a developed baseball field or diamond,” said Kopczick after the committee meeting. “It’s just for pickup games,” he said.

North Prairie Road Bridge closed in Goose Lake

GOOSE LAKE – The North Prairie Road Bridge over a lake channel in Goose Lake is closed.

The bridge is located between Cardinal Lane and Lakeside Drive. Recent bridge inspections have found deterioration that may affect the structure’s ability to safely handle traffic.

As a safety precaution, the Illinois Department of Transportation has ordered the bridge closed. There is no estimate on how long this closure will last.

Drivers are asked to detour around the bridge by using

South Prairie Road. There is no danger to boaters at this time, but they are asked to travel at a “no wake” speed while passing under the structure.

Many of those initiatives focus on curbing the heroin problem in Grundy County.

For example, Briley wants every deputy to travel with the life-saving drug Narcan in their squad cars, to revive those who overdose on heroin; he wants to expand the DARE program so it reaches high school students and covers the dangers of heroin use; he wants to create a heroin support group made for and comprised of loved ones.

Changes to the internal operations of the department are needed as well, Briley said. He has visions of creating satellite sheriff’s offices in Grundy

County communities to reduce officer response time.

Establishing a video conference check-in system is another goal for Briley. The digital check-ins would eliminate the need for officers to travel to the sheriff’s office in Morris each morning in order to check in.

This could increase each officer’s contact time in their communities and prevent wear on county vehicles, he said.

Making those changes to “the department’s status quo” would make for a better, more efficient department, he added.

“We have to look at streamlining things that we’ve done the same way for years and years,” Briley said. “It’s time for change.”

The dungeon opened Oct. 3 and runs through Nov. 1. Halloween falls on a Friday this year, when the attraction is open, and they hope it will bring even more people out to brave the haunt.

The $10 admission doesn’t just get patrons into the Dungeon of Terror. It also gets them into the Maze of Terror.

Clavey said the maze is an enigma wrapped in a riddle as people try to find their way through complete darkness. While it definitely is confusing,

Deb Punke said it isn’t spooky like the dungeon is.

“Some people take a half hour just to find their way out of there,” Clavey said.

Deb Punke said while the hours posted are from 7 to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 7 to 9 p.m.

Sundays, they don’t close as long as people are in line.

“We’ve been here as late as 12 a.m.,” Deb Punke said.

For those who aren’t sure if they can handle the true terror of the dungeon, there is a matinée with the lights on from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. today. Matinée admission is canned goods for the local food pantry.

Clavey said they encourage people to ask for pictures with the actors to post on social media or on their Facebook page.

LyondellBasell fills We Care’s Pantry MORRIS DAILY HERALD

MORRIS – LyondellBasell employees donated $750 to help We Care obtain 6,674 pounds of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank and provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves Friday.

“It is our pleasure to have this opportunity to work as a team and help those in need in our community. One of LyondellBasell’s main areas of focus in corporate giving and community involvement is to help fight hunger. We are proud that our employees demonstrate such a strong commitment to this goal through helping We Care fill its pantry,” Larry Zazeski, who heads up the company’s annual Global Day of Care fund drive, in a news release.

For more than seven years, LyondellBasell employees have filled We Care’s pantry from four to six times a year thanks to the Global Day of Care fund drive.

During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 246 families from its food pantry.

We Care receives a monthly delivery of food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The NIFB is able to provide food, cleaning, and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are un-

MORRIS – Needing a win to gain playoff eligibility, the Morris football team hosted LaSalle-Peru on Friday. And, as expected with L-P entering the contest 0-8, Morris jumped all over the Cavs early and put it out of reach.

LaSalle-Peru won the toss and elected to receive, but it couldn’t muster anything offensively as Morris forced them into a three-and-out.

The Redskins took a punt return deep into L-P territory, but was pushed back to the 28 by a hold. On his second carry of a two-play drive, Morris running back Jake Walker took a handoff and blew through a gaping hole, going untouched on his way to a 16yard touchdown run. A Luis Luna extra point gave Morris the 7-0 lead.

It’d be the last appearance of the Morris offense for several possessions, as the Morris defense and specials teams both got in on the scoring act.

Two scrimmage plays after finding paydirt on offense, Walker cut in front of a Jack Doyle pass and weaved his way through the L-P offense for a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown.

On the very next drive, Tommy Balentine got retribution for the long Joey Webb return that was called back previously, taking a punt and scoring from 64 yards out. It gave the Redskins a 21-0 lead with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter.

However, LaSalle-Peru finally mounted something of a drive on its next possession.

Unfortunately for LaSalle-Peru, it couldn’t convert, fumbling on third-and-goal.

Morris took over and proceeded to march methodically on a nine-play, 97-yard drive that ended in a 7-yard scoring run from Matt Feiden.

With the game quickly turning into a rout, Morris started gradually pulling starters, but still increased its lead with 13and 17-yard scoring runs from senior captains Griffin Sobol and Robbie Meucci.

Going into the half, Morris led LaSalle-Peru, 42-0, virtually guaranteeing themselves a coveted fifth win with a second-half running clock.

Coalers lead Irish late

Shaw Media Correspondent COAL CITY – Of all the football games Coal City and Seneca have played against one another over the years, Friday’s was among the ones carrying the greatest weight.

Seneca needed a win if it hoped to make the playoffs.

The 39 opponents’ wins the Fighting Irish entered Week 9 with were tied for the third-most among 4-4 teams projected to fall into Class 3A. Twenty-three likely 3A teams clinched a berth before Week 9, and none of the eight teams that were 5-3 entering the week had as many opponents’ wins as the Irish.

A victory would leave the Irish in good shape, but a Coal City team that already has clinched a playoff berth stood in their way.

The Coalers were playing for much more than pride; with a seventh win, they likely would host a Class

4A playoff game in the first round.

Early in the third quarter, not only did it appear the Coalers would need to start planning for a home game next week, but it also appeared they were on their way to the series’ first blowout since 2007. They led 27-0 against a team with which their past four meetings had been decided by a single score.

The first three Seneca drives resulted in punts that the Coalers turned into touchdowns. Jack Dibble provided the first and second of those scores on runs of seven and three yards.

Coal City did not even give the Irish the opportunity to play defense on the third punt, which Brad Littleton returned 73 yards after grabbing the ball on a bounce after it initially had gotten past him.

After recovering a Seneca fumble, Coal City’s quest to

quickly put the game out of reach slowed somewhat for the remainder of the half.

The Coalers drove to the Irish 3 before a direct snap to Dibble sailed over his head for a 22-yard loss. Coal City got the ball again after forcing another punt, but a holding penalty caused the Coalers to have to punt for the first time themselves.

Dibble, who ran for 368 yards last week against Lisle, had a comparatively pedestrian 96 yards on his 18 first-half carries. His average rose considerably on the first offensive play of the third quarter when, after the Coalers recovered an Irish onside kick, he broke off a 53-yard touchdown run.

Casey Pifer rushed eight times for 42 yards for Seneca; apart from his efforts, the Irish generated negative-8 yards of total offense during the first half.

Coal City defeated Seneca 49-18 in the sophomore game.

Redskins rally for their fourth straight regional championship

roesterle@shawmedia.com LaSALLE – One of the questions that Morris boys soccer coach David Valdivia asked his team before Friday night’s Class 2A LaSalle-Peru Regional title match against Streator was, “Do we ever give up?”

The answer from the team, loudly and in unison, was a resounding, “[Heck] no!”

That attitude certainly came into play late in the second half Friday night.

With the match tied at 1, a Morris defender sent a kick deep into the Streator zone.

Bulldog defender Cippy Lopez had a 15- to 20-yard head start on Morris’ Nick Borgstrom as both sprinted after the ball.

Borgstrom kept sprinting and closed the gap, finally catching up with Lopez near the end zone. Borgstrom slid and stopped the ball, keeping it inbounds as Lopez’s momentum took him beyond the end line. Borgstrom hopped up and spotted Ricardo Del Toro in the center of the goalie box.

He passed it to him, and Del Toro one-timed it hard past

“I was taught to never give up,” Borgstrom said. “Their defense was getting tired, and we just kept going. I was able to make a nice slice tackle and keep the ball inbounds. Then, when I got up, I made a move and saw Ricardo in the middle and got it to him.”

The Morris defense was able to keep Streator from scoring the rest of the way, and the Redskins celebrated their fourth straight regional title.

“Four years and four regional titles. That feels good,” Del Toro said. “It was a great

play by Nick to keep that ball inbounds. He also had his head up and I called for the ball. He got it to me and I just locked my ankle and kicked it hard.

“That’s a play we work on a lot in practice every day. I have been playing with him forever, so I knew he would be able to get it to me.”

The first half saw Morris play mostly on defense, and goalie Matt Borgstrom made save after save. The only ball he didn’t save was a header by Streator’s Danny Conness on a throw-in by Hunter Koehler with 17:42 to play in the half.

PLAINFIELD – Just before the first snap from center, one Plainfield North assistant said to his colleague, “Let’s get this little Gunn guy before he gets started.”

Minooka’s Nate Gunn, hardly little at 6-foot-1, wasn’t completely gotten by the Tigers. He ran for 119 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown, but Plainfield North controlled the Indians and ran away with a 60-20 victory.

The outcome keeps Minooka (4-5, 3-4 Southwest Prairie Conference) home for the playoffs for the third straight year, and guarantees Plainfield North (6-3, 5-2) a spot for the second time in three years.

It was a festival of scoring, especially in the first half, that would have brought a tear to the eye of an American Football League fan. Plainfield North led 26-20 after a quarter and added three second-quarter touchdowns for a 47-20 lead at intermission. The Tigers

scored on all seven of their first-half possessions.

Running back Quintin Hoosman celebrated senior night by running for five touchdowns. He scored from 30, 18, 11, 14 and 47 yards in the course of a 109-yard performance.

And he had company. Tiger quarterback J.D. Ekowa threw four touchdown passes and completed all nine of his throws. He hit Zach Jarosz on 54 and 59-yard touchdown strikes, and collaborated with Kyle Speas on 70 and 39-yard scores.

The Tigers jumped to a 12-0 lead on Jarosz’s 54-yard reception from Ekowa and Hoosman’s first touchdown run.

Gunn answered on the fourth play of Minooka’s subsequent drive, crashing across the right side and cutting to the middle for a 56-yard score. It was 12-7 with 6:40 left in the first quarter. Hoosman capped a six-play drive with an 18-yard score 2:39 later. Four snaps after that, Minooka, with Johnny Carnagio hitting Victor Turpin on a 73yard bomb, cut the gap to 18-14.

Choice on the way for TV viewers?

If you’ve ever grumbled about paying for all those cable or satellite channels when you only watch a handful, last week brought good and potentially big news.

TV networks HBO and CBS separately announced that they plan to offer an online version of their products that would be available to consumers even if they didn’t subscribe to cable or satellite.

CBS and other major networks already offer such a product, of course. It’s the over-the-air signal that’s free to anyone who can capture it with a TV antenna. But for those consumers who want more than the Big Four networks, the announcements signal a potential seismic shift in how we watch and pay for our TV. Until now, if you wanted to watch non-OTA networks, you had to purchase them along with dozens to hundreds of other channels as part of that cable or satellite subscription. If you only wanted HBO, ESPN and a few others, too bad. It was all or nothing.

TV providers and networks liked it this way because the subscription bundle approach made them gobs of money. They didn’t want to cannibalize their sales by offering a new product that would

cause consumers to cancel the cable subscriptions that produced all that revenue.

So why are at least two networks changing their mind? It’s not an act of Congress – although lawmakers did occasionally grumble (perhaps after opening their own bills) about the cable/satellite subscription model.

What happened was technology and the free market. Specifically, Netflix. The video rental company capitalized on the availability of faster Internet download speeds to sell access to thousands of movies and television shows shortly after they appeared in theaters and on networks. Netflix offered some successful original programming, too.

Most importantly, Netflix also made gobs of money doing it. That’s apparently either given networks the courage to dabble in the online model, or fear that they might be left behind as TV viewing habits continue to change.

HBO has yet to offer a subscription price for its network, and there’s no word yet if other networks will follow. (Hello, ESPN?) But choice seems to be on the way for consumers, who’ve convinced at least a couple networks to try giving them what they want, without a lot of what they don’t.

Is independent Greg Orman’s entire campaign a clever ruse?

The image some conservatives have of Greg Orman, the wealthy businessman running as an independent against veteran Republican Sen. Pat Roberts here in Kansas, is that Orman is, in the words of a recent Weekly Standard story, a “vacuous cipher.”

Watching Orman’s performance in a recent debate with Roberts before a business group in this large suburb of Kansas City, it’s safe to say that image is wrong, or at least incomplete.

Calling Orman a cipher suggests he has no positions, or nothing to say. But on some important topics, Orman outlined policies in more detail than Roberts. Some of Orman’s views, although certainly not all, would fit comfortably within the range of Republican orthodoxy.

For many Republicans, the real problem is not that Orman is a cipher. It’s the suspicion that his entire campaign is a ruse. Yes, Orman can be slippery on some big issues. What

Nobody really knows, except that Orman would not repeal the health care law. He’s been unclear about the Keystone pipeline, and fuzzy on immigration, too.

But on some other important issues, Orman has taken a clear stand. For example, at the debate, Orman proposed doing the following: 1) Relax Dodd-Frank restrictions on community and regional banks. 2) Review all government regulation every decade to rescind regulations that inhibit business growth. 3) Lower the corporate tax rate. 4) Lower overall tax rates. 5) Raise the Social Security eligibility age for younger Americans. 6) Cut the abuse of Social Security disability payments.

It’s all the kind of thing one

often hears from Republican candidates.

Orman also seems to have some ideas that go beyond most in the GOP. At one point in the debate, he was asked for his plan to shore up the dwindling Highway Trust Fund. Orman suggested the government might start by cutting social welfare spending.

“There are lots of areas in our budget that we can look at and find dollars,” he said. “I’ve talked a lot in this campaign about how I think we have a new American paradox, how I believe it’s harder than ever for the average American to get ahead, and yet paradoxically easier to do nothing with your life. And so I think we need to look at some of the programs that we have that we’re giving to people, that aren’t promoting pathways to work, and see if we can’t find dollars to make investments that we need to make in things like transportation.”

If a Republican said some-

thing like that, Democrats would attack him for wanting to take food out of poor children’s mouths. Yet when Orman says it, Democrats remain silent.

Which leads to the suspicion that the Orman campaign is a fraud. Republicans have long been skeptical about Orman’s “No Labels” style, but that skepticism went through the roof on Sept. 3, when, at the very last moment it was legally possible, Kansas Democrats forced their own candidate, Chad Taylor, to withdraw from the Senate race.

Taylor had been polling third, and his departure gave Orman a clean one-on-one shot at defeating Roberts.

Then there is Orman’s own political history. He ran briefly against Roberts as a Democrat in 2008, but now says he is neither Democrat nor Republican. But he has made campaign contributions to Democrats over the years, among them Barack Obama, Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton and Al Franken.

At the debate, Orman noted just one Republican to whom he has given – Scott Brown, briefly the GOP senator from Massachusetts. Recently, there was a fundraiser in New York for Orman, sponsored in part by big-money Democratic donors like Jonathan Soros, Joe Gleberman, John Petry and others.

Put it all together, and Orman seems to be the candidate that Democrats really, really want to win the Senate race in Kansas.

But what about all those positions that could fit under the Republican banner? It’s probably safe to say that after all that has come out in this campaign – the last-minute Democratic pullout, the Democratic support, Orman’s own history – most Republicans simply don’t believe Orman when he lays out positions that they might otherwise support.

How should South play in seven hearts after West leads the diamond queen?

Many Wests these days, despite the unfavorable vulnerability, would have used the Unusual No-trump, jumping to two no-trump over one heart to describe their minor two-suiter.

North used a strong jump shift, showing an excellent spade one-suiter or a good spade-heart two-suiter with, typically, 13-16 high-card points -enough to insist on game, but leaving a slam move to partner.

Declarer seems to have 14(!) tricks: five spades, seven hearts, one diamond and one club. There is a natural reaction for South to win the first trick with dummy’s diamond ace and to discard his club five. But then the apparent home-run ball is caught by an outfielder when the spades break 4-0.

Proper hygiene protects against urinary infections Dear Doctor K: I think my 4-year-old daughter may have a urinary tract infection. How will it be treated?

And what can I do to make sure she doesn’t get another one?

Dear Reader: A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria infect urine in the kidneys, bladder or urethra, a small tube that connects the bladder to the outside.

In girls (and women), the urethra is located in front of the vagina. The opening of the urethra is also near the rectum. The large intestine (the colon and rectum) are filled with bacteria. During bowel movements, those bacteria start living on the skin around the rectum and near the urethra. If those bacteria get into the urethra, they can move up into the bladder. From there, they can move into the kidneys.

This is what causes a UTI. Some girls and women have a tendency to get repeated UTIs. One reason is that some women inherit a tendency to have bacteria stick more easily to the cells of their urinary tract.

UTIs can cause fever, pain with urination, back pain and stomach pain.

Repeated UTIs over months and years can cause kidney damage, particularly if they are not treated promptly.

To check for a UTI, your daughter’s doctor will take her temperature because UTIs often cause fever. The doctor will also examine her. A UTI can cause tenderness in the lower part of the belly (where the bladder is) or in the lower back (where the kidneys are). He or she will also test your child’s urine for infection.

If your daughter does have a UTI, the doctor will prescribe an antibiotic.

Make sure your daughter takes her antibiotic exactly as directed. She should finish the entire course of

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff antibiotics, even if she starts to feel much better after the first several pills. If the antibiotic is stopped too soon, the UTI can return.

Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) may help relieve pain and fever. (Never give a child aspirin or any products containing aspirin.)

Drinking lots of liquids will help clear the infection and prevent dehydration – when children develop high fevers, the sweating can cause serious dehydration.

Applying a heating pad or warm compress to your daughter’s belly or lower back may help relieve discomfort.

UTIs are painful and uncomfortable. To prevent another one: • Make sure your daughter drinks enough fluids and urinates regularly.

• Avoid bubble baths and strong soaps that could irritate the genital area.

This is especially true before puberty.

• Teach your daughter to wipe herself only from front to back, especially after bowel movements. Wiping from back to front moves bacteria to the skin around the opening of the urethra.

• Have your daughter wear cotton underwear, not nylon or other fabrics.

Cotton allows air to circulate more freely, which helps prevent bacteria from growing.

There is no perfect protection against getting urinary tract infections, but these measures will help reduce the risk.
