fic stop was at Route 47 and Jefferson Street.

The possession of a controlled substance charge is a Class X felony, he said. In addition, Lovera was issued a warning for failure to signal while making a lane change.

A Class X felony is punishable between six and 30 years in jail, said Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Hel-

land.

Lovera is being held in the Grundy County Jail.

Lovera is a registered sex offender, according to the Illinois Sex Offender Information website, www.isp.state. il.us. According to the state, he was convicted on child pornography charges in Will County when he was 38 years old.

She is survived by three daughters; and one son; Nanette Ferguson, Jennifer (Scott) Gottschalk, Dollie (John) Braslavsky-Carey; son; Paul (Sarah) Ostrem II; twelve grandchildren; Thomas (Kelly) Buchanan, Jessica (Roger) Ferguson, Dean (Jennifer), Amanda, Zion, Moriah, Hannah, Cassia Gottschalk, Matthew Braslavsky, Katelyn, Stephanie, and Chris Ostrem. She is also survived by three sisters, one brother; Carol (Harold) Breen; Mary (William) Smith; Kathy (Robert) Wills; Richard (Paula) Norris, and eight great grandchildren.

She was known and loved by many as “Grammie”.

Visitation and celebration of life was held on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at the Dial and Dudley Funeral Home in Bryant, AR with a private burial following.

‘DON’T GIVE UP HOPE’ Coal City heroin addict shares recovery story

OAL CITY – One day at a time is how Michael Milne of Coal City is facing life.

At 14, Michael started using marijuana, by the age of 19 he was using heroin.

“At 14, I started smoking weed to fit in,” Michael said.

“I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere.”

By 16 he dropped out of high school and moved from weed to cocaine and crystal meth, to Oxycontin and heroin.

“I tried heroin and I fell in love with it,” Michael said.

“That’s why I believe weed is a gateway drug, it’s good for a couple of months, but then I wanted something stronger.”

Michael is not alone in his fight against heroin. All over Grundy County the commu-

nity is fighting what officials are calling an epidemic.

Heroin busts and arrests have been keeping area police departments busy as of lately – including one arrest in Morris just Wednesday night.

Earlier this month a Morris woman overdosed on heroin.

The Grundy County Coroner’s office has handled three heroin overdoses so far in 2014.

MINOOKA – When Crystal Nero’s son, Kyle, started experimenting with marijuana at age 14 people told her not to worry, it’s just what teenagers do.

“People said it was normal, it is not normal,” Nero said.

Kyle went from smoking marijuana to using prescription pain killers, and eventually his addiction led him to heroin.

At 17, when he completed rehab he looked her in the eye and told her he was not ready to come home, he wanted and needed further help.

Kyle has been in recovery for two years and is doing well, but it wasn’t without a lot of work and a lot of emotions, Nero said.

She was driving to a support group in Naperville when she realized that the hour drive was taking her away from other things she needed to be doing, so she decided to start a support group in Minooka where she lives.

“It was helpful but it was too far,” she said.

She reached out to her church to find out about holding a support group at the same time another woman was talking to the church about a group. The church introduced them and the support group Serenity Steps was born. They held their first meeting in May of this year.

They hold meetings at 7 p.m. every other Friday at Healing Waters Yoga studio in Minooka where all family members are welcome to come. Families dealing with any type of addiction are welcome.

Nero said they have a counselor speak at every meeting and discuss a range of topics including enabling and co-dependence.

After the educational portion of the meeting, families are encouraged to talk with their peers and share resources and support.

“I have had some come and not speak for two sessions, and that’s okay,” she said.

She said regardless of where the family member is in their addiction, whether they are currently using or are in recovery, they are welcome to come.

“We have on average 10 to 12 people at each meeting, and we’ve had as many as 23 people come, it’s obviously needed in our area,” Nero said. “People say it isn’t a problem here, and I say my son got heroin in Minooka.”

“Occasionally people will come in at night to work on preparing the budget for next year. It would be at their convenience to look at the budget right on their screens,” Miller said. “It’s beneficial to them to see where they’re at with

budgeted expenditures and receipts.”

Miller, 54, served as deputy treasurer from 1986 to 1998 and was first elected county treasurer in 1998.

Since then, she’s implemented programs in the department such as the trustee program, which has generated about $500,000 for tax districts within the past seven years.

The program was brought in to offer unsold real estate taxes and doesn’t cost the county any money.

“On behalf of the other districts, we take the tax deeds on it. We sell the property and other people can purchase the property,” she said. “It’s a great accomplishment when we have people come in and you can explain the process

About his drug addiction Michael said he doesn’t blame his parents for calling the authorities on him. He knows he was verbally and emotionally abusive.

The Milnes hope by sharing their story it will help continue to change the stigma behind addiction and will help people realize it is a disease and the solution is not jail.

After Michael got out of rehab he didn’t stay on the straight and narrow. In July 2010 Michael overdosed.

“I realized even though I was killing myself, I didn’t want to die,” Michael said.

But even after he overdosed he continued to use drugs un-

til he hit his rock bottom and asked for help.

“I fell to my knees and asked God to help me,” he said.

Gordon and Cathy remember the night it happened.

Gordon said he remembers his son coming out of his bedroom with tears rolling down his face.

“If you give up something you have to replace it with something, Jesus, NA (Narcotics Anonymous),” Gordon said. “I’m clean off of alcohol for eight-and-a-half years. I replaced it with Jesus. He just needed to find the replacement that worked for him.”

Michael said for the first time he realized he needed to get clean for himself, not for his ex-wife and not for his parents.

“There was nothing they could have done differently. I tried doing it for them, I tried doing it for everyone else, but until I did it for myself it never worked,” he said.

As of Thursday, Michael is

currently 980 days clean, he knows because an app on his phone keeps track of every second of his sobriety. He can pull it up for inspiration when he needs to.

“I know everyone says heroin will kill you, and the chances are high that you will die,” Michael said. “But it is possible to recover.”

He currently works 12-hour shifts starting at 6 p.m., goes to meetings and is back living with his parents in Coal City.

“We are very proud of him.

He’s come so far from where he was to where he is now,” Cathy said.

Michael has spoke to parents at Serenity Steps, a family support group that meets in Minooka each month to give other families hope that their children can get sober.

“My advice is don’t give up on them, don’t give up hope,” Michael said. “There is a fine line between enabling and being there. They need to be there.”

Enter the Morris Lions Club Costume Contest MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – It’s that time of year again for kids in cute costumes to enter the Morris Lions Club Halloween Costume Contest.

The annual Halloween Costume Contest will be on the front lawn of the Grundy County Courthouse at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to a news release from the Morris Lions Club.

Parents are encouraged to bring children in costumes to the contest between 4 and 4:15 p.m. to register before the judging at 4:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in the following age groups: ages 0-2, 3-4, 5-6,

7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and ages 13 and up. Adults are encouraged to come in costume, as well, to be judged in the 13 and up category. In case of bad weather, the judging will be moved to the Eagles Hall, across from the courthouse.

After the announcement of the winners, treats will be provided by the Morris Lions.

The downtown merchants will be offering treats, as well for costumed Halloween participants, from 5 to 7 p.m. Families are encouraged to join in the festivities, which provide a safe and fun way to start the Halloween celebration.

Werden said she would make sure there is a dual control process in place so more than one set of eyes looks at the finances.

“I’d take a look at recent findings and find procedures to put in place so it doesn’t happen again,” she said. “I can’t tell you what’s currently being done because I don’t know. But, if it’s just one person doing the job, then that’s obviously where things fall through the crack.”

Werden first announced her campaign for treasurer in July 2013.

Since then, her husband, Eric, has walked with her door-to-door every day of the election cycle.

“He’s my rock and I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. I mean that with every fiber of my being.” Werden said. “We’ve been campaigning since last year and have been juggling a household of kids – it’s not easy.”

Roy Forrest Wake, age 33, of Newark, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, in DeKalb County.

Born November 27, 1980, in Berwyn, Illinois, he was the son of Roy F. and Kathryn (Lombardi) Wake.

Roy attended Minooka grade school until his eighth grade graduation. He was home-schooled for his high school years while attending Joliet Junior College, receiving his high school diploma and associate’s degree in 1998. He later received his Bachelor’s degree from Park University in Missouri.

He enlisted and served with the United States Air Force from 19992003 at Whiteman Air Force Base. Roy was employed with VVF Services in Montgomery. He enjoyed visiting the farm in Wisconsin, weightlifting, and working on his sports cars at his home.

He was extremely devoted and loved by all his family and friends and would instantaneously help anyone of them.

Republicans Ron Severson, Chris Balkema and David Welter, ignoring the Grundy County Assessor’s expert opinion of the true assessed value of the Dresden facility, negotiated with Exelon to reduce the Dresden nuclear plant assessed valuation causing Grundy County and the area schools to lose millions of dollars of revenue from 2013 until 2018, instead shifting the tax burden onto the working middle class families of Grundy County.

Under Democratic Leadership, the Dresden plant, a plant with another 20 year renewal of its license and increasing electric rates and fees, saw increases in its assessed valuation, adding to our tax base and lessening the tax burden on Grundy homeowners.

Nearby points of interest identified by hotel officials include Harrah’s and Hollywood casinos in Joliet, the Chicagoland Speedway, local restaurants, a golf course and equestrian center.

Mayor Pat Brennan said the hotel will serve as the anchor establishment within the developmental property, hopefully enticing new restaurants and businesses to the commercial sector south of the interchange of Interstate 80 and Ridge Road.

“We’re hoping to fill that up,” Brennan said, commending the cooperation of several private and public agencies to plan the hotel. “Things are good.”

The hotel is taking two of the nine lots in the property.

Brennan said several restaurant and business owners have told him they are happy about the impact the hotel can have in the region.

Village Trustee Rudy Martin said Minooka had a hotel on the north side of I-80, but that fell out of use and was eventually demolished more than 10 years ago.

“It wasn’t the correct time for a hotel back then,” he said.

Senior night match slips away from Redskins

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Before their senior night match Thursday against DeKalb, Morris volleyball seniors Taya Torkelson, Amber Misek and Emma Thomas showed their collective sense of humor. When they filled out the form that was read over the PA system, there was a spot for future plans.

Torkelson said she was going to Stanford to study medicine, Thomas was going to attend Yale to study biomedical engineering and Misek was going to Harvard to study law.

They admitted after the match, a 25-20, 25-22 loss, that

those future plans were just tongue-in-cheek, but it reflection of the good times they had during their playing careers.

“It was definitely an emotional night,” Thomas said. “I spent four years playing on this floor, and I am going to miss it.”

“It was a real good experience,” Torkelson said. “I love the players and coaches.”

“We definitely grew together in four years,” Misek said.

“From Saratoga on for all three of us.”

On a night that also honored three other seniors – Joanna Nowicki, Alex Kjellesvik and Tiffany Gonzalez – who were injured before the season started but were part of

the program for four years, the Redskins matched the Barbs point for point for the first 20 in both games. However, in that last race to five, DeKalb pulled away both times in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East match.

The first game was tied at 20, but DeKalb scored the last five points, getting two consecutive kills from Heather Bemis to spark the run. Bemis led the Barbs with seven kills in the match.

In the second game, Morris held a 20-18 lead, but DeKalb tied it again at 20 and took a 21-20 lead on a block by Jessa Henry and went ahead 22-20 on a Morris hitting error. The Redskins (17-14, 1-7 NI Big 12

East) rallied to tie it on kills

by Kaylin Korte, who led the team with 11 kills, and Janelle Brehm, who finished with six.

DeKalb then got the serve back on a Morris service error, and won it when the Redskins committed a lift violation and a double hit.

Brehm had 10 digs and two aces to go with her six kills, while Korte had two blocks.

Torkelson had two aces, two blocks and nine assists, while Ashley Hood and Amber Polite each had five assists.

“We were right there with them in both games,” Morris coach Jackie Litwiller said.

“We just let it slip away. It is more of a mental thing than anything else.”

Morris begins postseason play Monday in the Class 3A Coal City Regional, taking on Kankakee at 6:30 p.m.

“We play in a very good conference,” Misek said. “I hope that playing against all these good teams in the conference will help us be prepared in the regional. Playing against good competition all the time has to make us better.”

Litwiller took it one step further.

“We hope that our conference schedule prepares us for regionals,” she said. “But, I also know that we can play better than what we have been.

We still have some work to do, and we will continue to work at it.”

BUFFALO GROVE – Play was halted for a while during the IHSA girls state tennis tournament Thursday because of a “suspicious package” that was found at the football field at Hoffman Estates High School.

The tennis matches that were taking place at the time were suspended and everyone in attendance was moved into the school building until the package was determined to be harmless.

The Morris doubles team of Monica Davy and Leah Lines were playing at Hoffman Estates when the call came, and their first-round match against Edwardsville’s Megan LaRose and Mallory Abert was delayed. When they resumed play, Davy and Lines lost the match, 6-1, 6-7, 7-6. They then rallied to defeat Tarah Fisher and Grace Madigan of Geneseo and Della Brown and Grace Anderson of Chicago University by identical 6-1, 6-2 scores to advance to today’s play. They will take on Morgan Rerko and Brittany Rohrsen of St. Charles North in the third round of consolation bracket play to begin play today.

Take time to drive, BEARS Could be a tough go for Forte see the colors of fall

Wow! What a gorgeous week.

Once the clouds broke their strangle hold on us, the sun turned the entire world into a kaleidoscope of color. There is never a more perfect time to go for a country drive than right now. When the next storm hits it will most likely strip the trees of their glorious fall apparel.

I have written about local fall drives in years past and they have garnered more reader responses than anything else I talk about. Numerous folks sent their thanks. They said the article pushed them to take a couple of hours and make the time for a little drive. Others wanted to express how happy they were to travel a new road. I think this weekend is going to be perfect for such a trip.

The first thing I always look for when planning a fall drive is the location of a river or stream.

These types of waterways are the key factor in finding a route that has numerous eye-catching highlights.

Rivers meander through the countryside and create many areas that cannot be easily developed. Some locations are too prone to flooding, others sit at such a grade that years of builders passed up the tough terrain and focused and flat ground elsewhere. The result has been beautiful scenery that flows, mostly uninterrupted, for miles.

I will start off with my favorite fall drive. I love to head west out of Morris on Old Stage Road.

If you are new to the area, just head toward Gebhard Woods State Park and keep following the pavement out of town. While on this stretch you will cross over the I&M Canal at Five Mile Bridge, and then weave your way around some amazing river bottom scenery.

Once you get to Seneca you have a couple of options. You can either jump back onto Route 6 and continue west toward Marseilles, or you can cut south, over the Illinois River, and make your way east down DuPont Road. Both routes will not disappoint.

Another short, but worthwhile drive is to take White Tie Road from Jugtown Road back toward the west. This majestic route will bring you on the

INTO THE OUTDOORS Steve Rogers south side of the Rainbow Council property and near some breathtaking overlooks that gaze across the Mazon River as it twists and turns. As you stare out at the scenery below you its hard not to imagine some native tribe camped along the shores of the Mazon River.

I’m sure the Indians who lived there were in awe of the beauty that surrounded them on a daily basis.

If you are looking for a great photo opportunity, I believe where Pine Bluff Road crosses the Mazon River is the most amazing location in the entire county. The golden oaks sitting high atop that bluff wall are something I never get tired of gazing at.

If you are in the mood for a nice hike, there are two great locations. The first, of course, is Starved Rock State Park in Oglesby. Most of us are quite familiar with the beauty this natural resource boasts. This weekend would be a prime time to head there for a memorable hike.

Another state park is just as glorious in its own way. Follow Route 113 or Route 102 toward Kankakee and you will soon run right through Kankakee River State Park. This park carries its own bragging rights for natural beauty and it has some nice hiking trails through it as well. I always enjoy a drive in that direction and try to head to Kankakee on one side of the river and come back on the other side.

No matter what your plans might be, try to make some time for a fall drive. The colors are beyond amazing and they will be gone too soon. In fact, while I’m thinking about it, I believe I will wrap this up and go for a drive right now. Have a great weekend and enjoy the amazing color.

LAKE FOREST – Only one running back has more than four catches in a game against the Patriots this season. Only two backs have more than 20 receiving yards against Bill Belichick’s defense.

Bears running back Matt Forte, the league leader in receptions, has caught at least five passes in every game this season and gone past 60 yards receiving four times.

“The way Belichick studies

offenses, he’s going to have a good game plan ready for us, so we’ve got to be ready to adjust to what they do and attack what they do,” Forte said after Thursday’s practice.

By the way Belichick talks about the Bears’ leader in yards gained, he’s done plenty of research leading into Sunday’s game.

“He’s a threat every time he steps on to the field in a number of different ways – passing game, running game,” Belichick told Patriots reporters Wednesday. “Any time he gets

the ball in his hands, he’s a good, solid player. He’s tough, great vision, great balance. “… He’s a terrific player; couldn’t’ say enough good things about him. He’s very good. He gets tough yards, gets yards in spaces. Catches short passes, runs downfield routes.

He’s a very, very complete player.”

Football is a game of adjustments, and as the Bears prepare to face the league’s top passing defense, Forte’s role in the game plan will have to be adaptable.

Flu vaccine can be healthy

The virus often spreads through contact with droplets from an infected person. It’s highly contagious and has killed thousands of people each year since 1976, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

No, not Ebola. We’re talking about plain old seasonal influenza, commonly known as the flu. Statistically, seasonal flu viruses pose a much greater public health threat than the scary and exotic – but relatively contained – Ebola.

The CDC estimates that anywhere from 5 to 20 percent of Americans catch the flu during flu season, which begins this month and can continue as long as May. Flu activity usually peaks from

December to February, health officials say.

Also unlike Ebola, there’s a vaccine that is widely available in Grundy County that can protect people from seasonal flu viruses.

So far this season, the county has run six flu vaccine clinics, and has two more scheduled in November. Adult flu shots, both the high dose vaccine for adults ages 65 and older as well as the adult quadravalent for adults ages 19-64, are available in a walk-in clinic from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Nov. 12 at the health department’s administration building, 1320 Union St. in Morris.

A second walk-in clinic is scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

building. This is for adults as well as children who meet Vaccine for Children’s program requirements. In order to qualify, children must be between 6 months and 18 years old, have a Medicaid card, no insurance or insurance that will not pay for the vaccine.

A $20 donation is requested.

In addition, many local pharmacies and physician offices also offer the vaccine to patients on a walk-in or appointment basis.

The flu vaccine does not offer ironclad protection against the flu, but it can substantially reduce the risk of becoming infected and spreading the virus.

As such, the CDC recommends everyone older than 6 months old receive the annual vaccine.

Only one year until next Catholic synod on family After the media firestorm surrounding the recent Synod of Bishops on family issues – with reports about plans to modernize doctrines on homosexuality, divorce and other sexy issues – Catholic activists are bracing for the sequels.

Mark these dates. First there will be the “Year of the Family,” preceding a “World Meeting of Families” on Sept.

22-25 in Philadelphia. The three-week Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Family will follow that.

That pivotal synod at the Vatican opens on Oct. 4, and faces the tough task of issuing pastoral guidelines in response to the heated debates at this year’s synod.

The world will be watching that Sunday as the pope preaches in the opening Mass. That sermon will be a challenge, since the official lectionary has already established Mark 10: 2-16 as the

day’s Gospel.

This passage – crucial in debates about marriage and divorce – proclaims “from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”

Jesus then tells his disciples: “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Will the pope seek changes in that church doctrine?

“The pope cannot teach that divorce is impossible and possible at the same time,” argued conservative Maggie Gallagher in a National Review essay responding to rumors of change during the

VIEWS Terry Mattingly recent synod. “If divorced and remarried Catholics (who are committing either adultery or polygamy depending on your point of view in the Catholic tradition) can in good conscience take the Eucharist, then either Pope Francis is wrong, or the popes before him were all wrong.”

Similar arguments surround attempts to be more flexible in pastoral care to gays and lesbians, as well as to Catholics who are cohabiting, without changing the catechism’s teachings that all sex outside of marriage is a sin.

In his final sermon at this synod, Pope Francis issued sobering warnings to his flock’s warring progressive and orthodox armies.

On one side, he said, in the Vatican Radio transla-

tion, there is a “temptation to hostile inflexibility (or rigidity), that is, wanting to close oneself within the written word (the letter) and not allowing oneself to be surprised by God, by the God of surprises (the spirit); within the law, within the certitude of what we know and not of what we still need to learn and to achieve.” This is, he added, the “temptation of the zealous, of the scrupulous, of the solicitous and of the so-called – today – ‘traditionalists’ and also of the intellectuals.”

Then, he warned the left that it faces a “temptation to a destructive tendency to goodness, that in the name of a deceptive mercy binds the wounds without first curing them and treating them; that treats the symptoms and not the causes and the roots. It is the temptation of the ‘do-gooders,’ of the fearful, and also of the so-called ‘progressives and liberals.’ ” Later, Francis affirmed

a list of moral doctrines, including the “indissolubility, the unity, the faithfulness, the fruitfulness, that openness to life” in marriage.

The church, he stressed, must be a “fertile Mother and the caring Teacher, who is not afraid to roll up her sleeves to pour oil and wine on people’s wounds.

“This is the Church, the true bride of Christ, who seeks to be faithful to her spouse and to her doctrine. It is the Church that is not afraid to eat and drink with prostitutes and publicans, the Church that has the doors wide open to receive the needy, the penitent and not only the just or those who believe they are perfect.”

The abnormal can be the right play

Cory Doctorow, a Canadian blogger, journalist and science-fiction author, claims, “Abnormal is so common, it’s practically normal.”

If abnormal is normal, does that make normal abnormal? In bridge we have lots of normal bids and plays, but the deals in which we must produce the abnormal is one reason why the game has kept its appeal.

In today’s deal, what is the abnormal play? South is in four spades.

West leads the heart two in answer to his partner’s opening bid.

North just shut his eyes and blasted into four spades. He hoped that even if his heart king was worthless, his partner would have a chance to rake in 10 tricks.

Assuming East has the heart ace (surely West would not have underled the ace), South starts with three top losers: one spade and two hearts. He must avoid also losing a diamond trick.

Who has the diamond king?

If West, the contract is going down when East shifts to that suit after taking two heart tricks. Therefore, declarer must hope that East has that key card. Then the defenders can establish a diamond trick only if West leads the suit through dummy’s ace.

South must keep West off lead.

Declarer must play low from the dummy at trick one, not make the normal play of putting up the king on the off chance that West has underled the ace.

East wins with his jack and cashes the ace, but then has no winning continuation. Declarer drives out the spade ace, draws the rest of the trumps, and runs the clubs to discard his diamond loser. He takes four spades, one diamond and five clubs.

Pesky peacocks featured in dinner party invitation Dear Abby: A former colleague recently moved nearby and sent us an invitation to dinner at her new residence. She lives in an area that’s populated by wild peacocks, which she knew before she moved there.

A condition of her invitation is that we (my spouse and I) agree to use a type of high-powered water gun to shoot at the peacocks from her balcony while we are visiting. The use of alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Compared with non-drinkers, women who consume 1 alcoholic drink a day have a very small increase in risk. Those who have 2 to 5 drinks daily have about 1½ times the risk of women who don’t drink alcohol.

Excessive alcohol consumption is also known to increase the risk of developing several other types of cancer.

Being overweight or obese after menopause increases breast cancer risk. Before menopause your ovaries produce most of your estrogen, and fat tissue produces a small amount of estrogen. After menopause (when the ovaries stop making estrogen), most of a woman’s estrogen comes from fat tissue.

can increase your chance of getting breast cancer by raising estrogen levels.

Also, women who are overweight tend to have higher blood insulin levels. Higher insulin levels have also been linked to some cancers, including breast cancer.

But the connection between weight and breast cancer risk is complex. For example, the risk appears to be increased for women who gained weight as an adult but may not be increased among those who have been overweight since childhood. Also, excess fat in the waist area may affect risk more than the same amount of fat in the hips and thighs.

Researchers believe that fat cells in various parts of the body have subtle differences that may explain this.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Evidence is growing that physical activity in the form of exercise reduces breast cancer risk. The main question is how much exercise is needed. In one study from the Women’s Health Initiative, as little as 1.25 to 2.5 hours per week of brisk walking reduced a woman’s risk by 18%. Walking 10 hours a week reduced the risk a little more.
