Morris Police issue safety reminders for Halloween Leaves should not be raked into gutters, streets

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The City of Morris and Morris Police Department would like to remind residents that Halloween trick-or-treat hours are 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31, and to use safety precautions when kids head out.

Morris Police Chief Dite said it is especially important for parents to adhere to a few safety rules for their children when they are trick-or-treating.

Some of these steps to navigation safety on Halloween include knowing your trickor-treat route, walking on sidewalks rather than a yard or in the street, watching for vehicles backing up and carrying a flashlight, he said.

To ensure candy consumption safety, set rules about not eating treats until returning home and throwing away candy that appears to be opened or tampered with, Dite said.

Parents and guardians should remind kids not to enter strangers’ homes or cars, and to not stop at dark houses.

Morris police will be keeping an eye out for pedestrian safety in neighborhoods, knowing that there’s increased foot traffic, Dite said.

“We’ll also use the registered sex offender list and check laws to find out which ones are not allowed to hand out candy,” Dite said.

He also said people should trick-or-treat in groups, with an adult present, if possible.

Dite encouraged motorists to be on the alert for excited youngsters out on the prowl for tasty treats.

Trick-or-treat bags are available at no cost at the Morris Police Department while supplies last.

Additionally, it is unlawful to deposit/rake leaves, as well as landscape and yard waste, into gutters and onto streets of Morris.

Violators are subject to fines not less than $50 and no more than $750 for each offense and a separate offense shall be deemed committed on each day that a violation occurs or continues.

INDICTMENTS MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland, announced that on Oct. 21, the grand jury returned the following indictments. The public is advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

• Dion Banks, 23, of Chicago, was indicted for unlawful possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of cannabis, a Class 4 felony.

• Alexander Bulanda, 28, of Joliet, was indicted for unlawful possession of oxycodone, a Class 4 felony.

• Tyler Metcalf, 23, of Dwight, was indicted for driving while revoked, a Class 4 felony.

• Gilbert Milton 43, of Morris, was indicted on two counts for aggravated driving while under the influence, both Class 2 felonies; and aggravated driving while under the influence, a Class 4 felony.

• David Palecios, 29, of Joliet, was indicted for driving while revoked, a Class 4 felony.

• Gerald Petkus, 77, of Winnemucca, Nevada, was indicted for unlawful cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony; unlawful possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis with the intent to deliver, a Class X felony; and unlawful possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, a Class 1 felony.

• Derrick Phillips, 50, of Calumet City, was indicted on three counts for aggravated driving while under the influence of drugs, all Class 4 felonies; and unlawful possession of methadone, a Class A misdemeanor.

Morris family hopes to raise awareness of food allergies at Halloween

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – There has to be more people in Grundy County dealing with what Tom and Sarah Nelson say they deal with every hour of the day.

In the last year, the food allergies of their 3-year-old son, Oliver, have gotten worse.

They learned how to accommodate his dairy and egg allergies, but when tested again this year, not only were his allergy levels higher – they learned he’s allergic to tree nuts.

“We don’t leave the house without Oliver’s EpiPen,” Sarah said.

The EpiPen, or epinephrine autoinjector, treats a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. They’ve come close to using it one time, but they’re hoping they, and other parents, never have to.

To make sure that’s the case and to raise awareness of food allergies, especially among children, the Nelsons paint their pumpkins teal in the fall.

Teal is the color of food allergy awareness, according to KidsWithFoodAllergies.org.

But the Nelson household, on Dupont Avenue in Morris, is the only home in Grundy County listed on the Teal Pumpkin Project map.

The Teal Pumpkin Project encourages communities to make Halloween enjoyable for children with allergies by offering non-food treats to trickor-treaters, according to the Food Allergy Research & Education website. This year, the Nelsons are handing out Halloween-themed pencils, stickers and more.

They hope more residents join the movement, because unlike most kids who dive into a pile of candy when they get home after trick-or-treating, the Nelsons have to check labels for the presence of all the foods Oliver is allergic to.

And even then, children can’t be sure, because sometimes hard candy is made on the same equipment as candy with dairy, eggs and nuts, Tom said.

Mazon resident makes safety suggestion

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD MORRIS – Laurie Pfeifer of Mazon would like to see Grundy County install rumble strips in the roadway on Gardner Road where it meets with Route 47.

In an email to County Engineer Craig Cassem that was handed out to highway committee members at a meeting Thursday night, Pfeifer said she witnessed a car “literally jump across Route 47 ... without even so much as slowing down” the night before, and she again was asking the county to consider installing the rumble strips.

“I’ve had people say they’d help pay to install them,” Pfeifer said on the phone after the meeting, which she didn’t attend. “If you felt a rumble strip it’s going to get your attention.

I don’t want to see anyone get hurt or killed.”

Pfeifer first came to the highway committee last year asking for the installation of rumble strips at the intersection; the county instead installed a flashing yellow light.

The committee discussed the installation of rumble strips during the Thursday night meeting and members decided they’d like to see some data about how effective the strips are and the cost of installing them, as well as look at

The county currently doesn’t have rumble strips on any of its roads, which cover 138 miles of roadway.

In the 1980s, Illinois Department of Transportation installed rumble strips at the intersection of Routes 113 and 47 following a deadly collision.

Cassem said he has discussed with IDOT installing the strips at Gardner Road to see what the state’s opinion on the matter would be.

“I talked to IDOT and they said they wouldn’t do anything because there is a low accident count,” Cassem said.

He said rumble strips usually are put in place as a response to accidents.

Pfeifer said regardless of the number of actual accidents, she has personally seen many cars go through the intersection without stopping while she and her husband are farming a field located at the intersection.

In the past five years there have been two accidents at the intersection that can be attributed to someone not stopping at the stop sign.

Traffic studies on Gardner Road show that 1,150 vehicles travel daily on East Gardner Road daily while 550 travel on West Gardner Road. Many people use the road to access the village of Gardner from other areas in the county.

CADD classes as part of a partnership with the school district. Students who enroll in the culinary arts program will receive a food services and sanitation license, as well as receive dual credit at Joilet Junior College.

“Culinary arts will address the business end as well as advance the students beyond

what they learn in their basic foods class,” Skube said.

The CADD program was created after a survey of students showed many were looking for the next step after their high school CADD classes, according to Skube.

Skube said although each school might have students interested in taking advanced

classes, often there aren’t enough students to justify an additional class at their home school.

GAVC gives the schools the opportunity to combine those interested students in one place for their class. Skube said the center is working toward making the CADD program into a dual-credit program, as well.

Aviation, which was introduced for this school year, did not have enough student interest to start this year as planned, so the center will offer it again next year to see if enough students decide to enroll. Students will learn about the different areas of employment available to those interested in aviation.

“It’s a complete survey of aviation,” she said. “It’s not just pilots, but also mechanics and air traffic control. It gives them an introduction to the field.”

Skube said the addition of the three new programs is a way to reach a new student population that didn’t feel the center offered something for them.

MORRIS – Grundy Area Vocational Center programming continues to grow, offering students in the county a hands-on learning environment in fields they are interested in.

At an open house scheduled for Nov. 5, the community is invited to see everything the center has to offer.

“Our open house is unique,” Assistant Director Jeanne Skube said. “We don’t want just the current students and parents to come. We also want the businesses in the community and families with undergrads to come in.”

She said it is the perfect opportunity for those in the community who aren’t familiar with GAVC to see what it has to offer. GAVC is open to juniors and seniors from the four Grundy County high schools.

Students are bused to the center located behind Morris Community High School, and routes begin from Minooka Community High School, Gardner-South Wilmington High School and Coal City High School.

The center offers an array of programs, which include automotive technology, building trades, computer graphics and multimedia design, computer maintenance technology, cosmetology, criminal justice, early childhood education, fire science, health occupations and welding. The public also can learn about three new programs, which will be offered during the 2016-17 school year if there is enough interest for them. Aviation, culinary arts and computer-aided drafting and design are ready to begin.

Joliet mayor, lawmakers react to debt downgrade

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com The partisan gridlock and budget crisis in Springfield have forced yet another downgrade of the state’s general obligation bond ratings.

Without a state spending plan in place since July 1, Moody’s Investors Service on Thursday d o w n g r a d e d State Sen. Illinois’ rating Sue Rezin on $26.8 billion R-Morris in outstanding bond debt, citing the state’s weakening financial position.

The move came the same week the Fitch Ratings dropped the state’s bond rating.

The credit rating agency gave Illinois a negative outlook, noting how “further deterioration in key measures, such as the state’s unfunded pension li-

abilities and amount of unpaid bills, would put pressure on the state’s (general obligations) and related ratings.”

The perpetual downslide will affect Joliet’s ability to borrow money for planned major capital projects, the city’s $10 million pledge toward a new Will County courthouse and the redevelopment of Evergreen Terrace, State Sen. Joliet Mayor Pat McGuire Bob O’Dekirk said Thursday.

D-Joliet “I wish, like everyone else, everything would straighten itself out in Springfield,” said O’Dekirk, adding that he’s becoming increasingly concerned about Illinois withholding money owed to local governments due to the budget impasse.

“You have to look at the past 12 years. … Our governor has been in office for 10 months. We haven’t gotten here in the last 10 months,” Rezin said. “One person has completely paralyzed the state and is holding up compromise, and that’s (House Speaker Michael Madigan).”

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said in an email that the report is “another confirmation” that years of unbalanced budgets, deficit spending and mismanagement have damaged Illinois’ fiscal stability.

“This is more proof that instead of blocking all reforms and passing a broken budget that was $4 billion in the hole, the supermajority in charge of the legislature should partner with the governor to enact real reforms that will grow jobs and free up more resources to balance the budget,” Kelly said.

The agency placed blame on Springfield’s gridlock and the rollback of the income tax increase last year, asking that Illinois government implement a realistic plan to pay its pension obligations, reduce its payment backlog and pass a balanced budget.

Many winners at Morris Lions Club Car Show Chevy Malibu, cash prizes among the raffle rewards for participants SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Bob Anderson had totally forgotten buying three tickets for the classy ’72 Chevelle Malibu, at a car show early last spring.

Like many, he considered it a donation to a good cause, and placed the tickets with other raffle tickets he had collected over the year.

When the Lions placed the call Oct. 11 to the winning ticket, at the Lions Club Classic Car Show, it was his friend, Marv Fowler – also at the show – who finally got through to him on his cellphone to confirm that he had won this year’s car.

Marv, also from Colum, made the drive back to Morris the next day, to bring his friend, Bob, and Bob’s brother, Ted Anderson, to pick up this wonderful surprise, the beautiful blue ’72 Chevelle Malibu raffled off at this year’s Lions Club Classic Car show. Bob even brought the three tickets he had purchased to show Lion Tom Kinzler.

Bob was one of many winners at the 29th Annual Lions Club Fall Classic Car Show.

The Car Raffle also had cash prizes awarded.

Second prize of $2,500 was won by Jeff Kirby, third prize of $1,000 went to Randy Stroud.

Two prizes of $500 were

won by Jose DeiValle and John Luthy.

Five awards of $100 each went to Ruth Poppe, Jim Wilhelmi, Josh Hume, Aaron Mathews and Gerard Murphy. The 50/50 drawing sold out of tickets, and the winner, Mike Tkach of Joliet took home $2,395.

The beneficiary of the 50/50 was the Morris Firefighters Association, which also will receive funds to purchase accessories to use with their new rescue boat, donated by the Morris Lions.

A hayrack of beautiful trophies were awarded for the show cars.

“I’m even afraid of wrappers,” Sarah said. “We have to avoid products made on the same equipment of the things he’s allergic to.”

Then there’s the element of trusting that traces aren’t passed from hand to wrapper or hand to hand. Tom said it can get a bit tiring at family gatherings, when the Nelsons constantly have to ask if people washed their hands when near their son.

While the Teal Pumpkin Project focuses on a specif-

ic time of year, the reality for parents and guardians of children with severe food allergies is that it’s a daily challenge.

Ingredients most wouldn’t think twice about consuming could threaten their son’s well-being. The Nelsons don’t often go out for family dinners.

Not only can Oliver not have pizza, he can’t touch the dinner table if it hasn’t been wiped down afterward.

Many of the allergen-free items he needs to eat aren’t sold in Morris, and they sometimes cost twice as much.

“We had a babysitter and went on a date once,” Sarah said. “We decided to stop at Whole Foods and stock up before we went home.”

DOROTHY SCHENNUM

Born: March 22, 1919; in Gardner, IL Died: Oct. 19, 2015; in Princeton, IL Dorothy “Dee Dee” Schennum, age 96, of Coal City, passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at Liberty Village in Princeton.

Born March 22, 1919 in Gardner, Dee Dee was a daughter of the late George and Anastasia “Dolly” Brusnigham-Johnson.

She was raised and educated in Gardner, and married Howard Schennum.

Dee-Dee was a member of the Coal City United Methodist Church, and one of the original founders who helped establish a local kindergarten.

She was a homemaker for most of her life, but also worked for Boggio’s, Wayne’s Cardinal and Bellettini’s grocery stores.

Dee-Dee will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and an all-around nice person that will be missed by many.

Survivors include her children, Maurie (Carol) Schennum of Princeton and Gary (Marion) Schennum of Lake Tahoe, Nevada; four grandchildren, Scott, Steve,

Cory Wells, Three Dog Night singer, dies in New York at 74 The ASSOCIATED PRESS DUNKIRK, N.Y. – Cory Wells, a founding member of the popular 1970s band Three Dog Night and lead singer on such hits as “Never Been to Spain” and “Mama Told Me (Not to Come),” has died at age 74.

Wells experienced acute back pain weeks ago and died suddenly Tuesday in Dunkirk, where he had lived, bandmate Danny Hutton said.

“Cory was an incredible singer – a greater performer, he could sing anything,” Hutton said.

The cause of Wells’ death was unknown, Universal Music Enterprises spokeswoman Sujata Murphy said.

Vocalists Wells, Hutton and Chuck Negron formed Three Dog Night in 1967, lifting the name from Australian slang for especially cold weather.

Wells, a Polish-American with several polka players among his relatives, was born Emil Lewandowski in Buffalo, New York.

He joined the Air Force right out of high school and performed in local groups after returning. He moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s and while in the house band for the popular club the Whiskey A-Go-Go he met Hutton, a writer and producer at the time with Hanna-Barbera Records. Wells and Three Dog Night continued to record and tour, in various incarnations, right up to the present.

LOS ANGELES – Marty Ingels, a raspy-voiced comedian, actor and talent agent who was married to singer and actress Shirley Jones for nearly 40 years, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 79.

Ingels died in the Tarzana neighborhood after complications from a stroke, according to a statement issued on behalf of Jones by her manager, Milt Suchin.

“He often drove me crazy, but there’s not a day I won’t miss him and love him to my core,” the actress said in the statement.

Ingels was born Martin Ingerman in Brooklyn and later moved to Los Angeles.

Beginning in the 1960s, Ingels appeared in some movies and a number of TV show episodes, including “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “The Phyllis Diller Show” and “Bewitched.”

He co-starred with John Astin in the 1962-63 TV comedy “I’m Dickens, He’s Fenster.”

Ingels also did voice work for hundreds of cartoons, commercials and video games. He voiced Pac-Man in the 1982 an-

by Ingels’ gruff demeanor and brazen approach,” according to the statement. “As he himself said, ‘I was a Jewish kid from Brooklyn and she was Miss America. A lot of people never got that. But Shirley always did.’ ” They married in 1977. Their book, “Shirley & Marty: An Unlikely Love Story,” was published in 1990.

FALL SPORTS Rob Oesterle A few weeks into the high school football season, I wrote about all of the area teams and how they all held promise to be playoff teams.

Looks like I spoke way too soon.

As it stands, Morris, at 3-5, and Seneca, at 2-6, have both been eliminated from the playoffs. Both Coal City and Minooka, each with 4-4 records, have a chance to reach the playoffs with wins this week.

Coal City plays a Seneca team that has been racked with injuries at key positions, so the Coalers’ prospects look pretty good.

The downside to that is that they will enter the playoffs with a 5-4 record and be on the road, most likely against an undefeated or oneloss team. Not an easy task.

Minooka, meanwhile, has the unenviable assignment of playing Plainfield North and needing a win. The Tigers handed 7-1 DeKalb its only loss of the season and have won their past four heading into Friday night. Minooka, meanwhile, has seen a 4-1 mark turn into 4-4 with losses in their past three games.

Even with a win, the Indians may not have enough playoff points (opponent wins) to qualify.

It may turn out to be one of the shortest football postseasons in recent memory in the area.

That doesn’t mean that all is lost for fans of area sports.

The Morris and Coal City tennis teams have entries in this weekend’s state tennis meet, and there could be some volleyball teams that make some noise.

Also, Morris’ boys soccer team is trying for its fifth straight regional title Saturday at the Class 2A LaSalle-Peru Regional against Geneseo at 3 p.m.

Plus, not far down the road is a football program that local fans may want to adopt and follow.

I am talking about Wilmington, the defending Class 3A state champion. The Wildcats are currently undefeated, ranked No. 2 in 3A by the AP in the most recent poll, and play fellow 8-0 team Manteno, ranked No. 5 in 4A, on Friday night.

For those who don’t know, Morris graduate Jeff Reents is the head coach at Wilmington, as he has been for the past 21 years. He missed the playoffs his first two seasons, but hasn’t since.

This season will be the 20th in a row that will see Reents and the WIldcats in the playoffs. Also on the sidelines will be a familiar Morris face in Andy Peterson.

The town is wild about its

Wildcats, and if you decide to make a trip over there, get there early. There is a new high school, but the games are still played at the old school, which doesn’t have the greatest parking in the world.

But I promise you the pregame show alone is worth the trip and the price of admission. And if you are a fan of line up, hit each other for four quarters and see who comes out on top football, then a Wilmington game is for you.

Yes, I heard about the recent dustup about the Redskins nickname at the recent Morris High School board meeting.

I honestly believe that there will come a time when the state will mandate that

Morris drops the name, but, until then, I am fairly confident it will stay. Right now, I would think that the state has bigger issues to address.

I don’t know anyone who thinks of being a Morris Redskin as a negative thing.

An overwhelming majority of graduates of Morris Community High School are proud to be Redskins. They are part of that community. Yes, it would be the same if the school founders way back when had picked another name, but they didn’t.

It also starts us down a slippery slope. Where does it stop? Would it just be the five schools that use Redskins as a nickname that would be forced to change, or would the

22 Indians and 31 Warriors have to as well? Or the three Braves, three Blackhawks and one each of Chiefs, Comanches, Tribe, Kahoks, Mohawks, Saukees and Illinieks?

Seems to me like that would eventually wipe out any memory of Native Americans on Illinois soil, and I don’t think that’s what we’re after, either.

Those of us who have walked those halls are Redskins, and it is a bond that ties us all together.

The name can, and – most likely – will change.

The bond won’t.

We have been fortunate to see mild weather so far this fall.

But we all know that sooner or later Old Man Winter will rear up and blast us with freezing temperatures and blowing winds. For most people, those thoughts are downright dreadful. One group of dedicated outdoors enthusiasts think otherwise-the mighty waterfowl hunter.

Depending on the zone in which you live, waterfowl season has already begun, or is about to. There are many duck hunters and goose callers that have been waiting for this page of the calendar to show itself.

This die-hard lot goes above and beyond both in preparation and execution of their sport than most people realize.

I have to say, I love to hunt waterfowl and have been lucky enough to hunt with some pretty amazing people all over the country. I’ve targeted ducks in the middle of the infamous Ballard County, Kentucky and

most parts of the Arkansas flatlands. I’ve shot geese both over fields and in rivers.

That doesn’t mean I am a waterfowl expert. I’m just a guy that has hunted with some of the best and set up decoys in amazing locations.

The common factor I’ve noticed is that these dedicated individuals think nothing of waking hours before most other hunters, trudge hundreds of pounds of gear into the middle of a field or through the toughest of waterways, wait for the sun to rise, and anticipate the chance to call in a group of birds and watch them work to their decoys. Then they get up and do it all over again the next morning. The first time I went goose hunting I remember the guy I was hunting with tell me to meet him at a certain gas station at some horrific time of the morning. It was early enough I wondered why I even went to bed.

We carried those plastic recreations, four at a time, one trip after another, until I thought my arms would fall off. I have no idea how many we placed in the cut corn field, but when I finally turned around and took it all in I was impressed. An army of goose silhouettes made me twinge with excitement. Next came the layout blinds. We lugged them into the middle of the decoys. The next 15 minutes consisted of blending them into the surroundings. We stuffed corn stalks in and around the blinds to make sure birds

After I worked up a sizable sweat from the morning activity, we had to drive the truck and trailer to the other end of the field. No big deal until I turned around and walked back across half the county.

I never in my life had done so much work on the morning of a hunt. I promised myself to never again complain about how much work it is to use a climbing deer stand. That was nothing compared to this.

No sooner had we returned to the blinds and settled in, did the sun start to peak over the horizon. In the distance, the telltale sound of geese honking cut the morning air. It was about the begin. This seasoned

goose hunter I was with flagged down the birds, called them in with some well-timed calls and before I knew it I witnessed landing gear down and Canada Geese dropping onto our position. In that moment, that singular, beautiful moment, I knew that everything we had done was worth it. I now knew why the mornings started so early, why the decoys had to be setup just right, and how come the blinds needed to be covered.

Waterfowlers experience an adrenaline rush that is hard to explain until you hear the whistle of the wings for yourself.

Gov. Bruce Rauner said last week he had spoken with both Senate President John Cullerton and House Speaker Michael Madigan about his proposed sale of the state’s Thompson Center building in Chicago and both men were “forward leaning and positive” about the plan.

“The governor and President Cullerton spoke,” said Senate president’s spokeswoman, Rikeesha Phelon. OK, so far so good. At least these weren’t “phantom” phone conversations like the ones governor-elect Rauner claimed he had with those two on election night in November, but didn’t.

“We will take a look at the specifics of the plan in light of state statutes regarding property control and facility closures,” Phelon continued.

So, what’s going on? I’m not totally sure, but the governor now has yet another new “ask” for the Democratic leaders; and as we’ve seen during this excruciatingly long state government impasse, they’re not in much of a giving mood – and he isn’t, either.

The Thompson Center has become a symbol for much that has gone wrong with this state.

The skyscraper was a grandiose design with numerous flaws. Its construction heralded the beginning of the move of much of the state’s governmental business from Springfield to Chicago.

Despite its architect’s claim last week that it was designed to represent the “openness and transparency” of state government, it was harshly criticized from the start for including a “private elevator” for the governor’s personal use.

The building’s legendary namesake, 14-year Gov. James R. Thompson, actively sought organized labor’s political support, including from the state government union AFSCME,

VIEWS Rich Miller and was the most memorable purveyor of this state’s “Republicrat” politics that our current anti-union governor is now attempting to demolish, along with his building.

Check out the joint statement released last week by the House and Senate Republican leaders regarding the sale: “We filed House Bill 4313 and Senate Bill 2187 at the request of Governor Rauner. The James R. Thompson Center is in complete disarray due to years of neglect by previous administrations, and better utilizing this asset would benefit Illinois taxpayers tremendously. It has become a white elephant for the state of Illinois.

This legislation will enable us to review all of our options to maximize the overall value of the property and secure the greatest savings for taxpayers.”

Rauner also stopped in Quincy last week and claimed he was “negotiating” with the speaker and the Senate president and making some progress on ending the months-long stalemate.

But I’m told he met personally with the Senate president a couple weeks earlier, and it apparently went nowhere.

Thompson had his faults, and he didn’t always get his way. But he never would’ve let a political stalemate hurt this state like we’re seeing now.

I never much cared for the Thompson Center, but in my mind it’s become a sad, dilapidated symbol of a government that, like the man the building was named after, used to work.

With a simple touch, customers can adjust the temperature from the convenience of a smartphone, tablet or home computer. That means families can enjoy heating and cooling when they need it, and eliminate wasted gas and electricity costs when they don’t.

The devices even “learn” customer behavior over time to automatically adjust temperature settings without having to lift a finger. Saving energy has never been simpler.

Northern Illinois residents now are eligible for up to $120 in utility rebates for ecobee3 and Nest Learning Thermostats, cutting the price tag of the thermostats nearly in half. With the rebates, the devices – which can cut home heating and cooling costs by up to 20 percent – potentially can pay for themselves within two years – and then go on to generate hundreds of dollars in savings afterward. With the goal of reaching 1 million new households, we now have the potential to save nearly $120 billion in energy costs across Illinois.

Tattoo establishment will help Morris grow

To the Editor: In reference to the Morris City Council meeting whether to approve a permit to allow a tattoo establishment to do business in town or not, I am dismayed by the arguments against it.

Attorney John Hanson wonders how the shop will fit in the neighborhood? Most importantly, a building that has been empty for a year and a half will be occupied by a tenant providing a commercial service for the community. That’s an accurate description of the neighborhood in question.

I don’t intend to be a customer at my age, but I understand that getting a tattoo today is not anything close to what the perception was when I was much younger. The world evolves and if we don’t go along with it, we get stuck in our ways.

It’s called growth – something this business will bring to our city as well.

He pitches first the club nine, then the club two – high-low with a doubleton and asking partner to shift to that suit. Then, as long as East is watching, he will lead a club at trick four, which West will ruff to defeat the contract.
