Minooka invites people, businesses, organizations to decorate trees MINOOKA – The Village of Minooka will host “A Village Christmas,” formerly “Christmas on Mondamin,” from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 6 in the newly remodeled Community Room located at what previously was Napa Auto Parts.

In previous years, many organizations and civic groups participated by distributing hot cocoa, cookies, candy and other items along with information regarding their business, according to a news release from the village.

Minooka invites you to host a table offering holiday items along with information about your business or consider decorating a tree to advertise your business to the residents of Minooka.

The village is looking for anyone who would like to decorate and donate a decorated Christmas tree for Minooka’s “Festival of Trees.” Any size tree is acceptable and any holiday theme is permissible. So gather your crew and bring your tree and decorations to the Village Hall from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 24 to Dec. 5.

Meetings of many groups take place in the Community Room and your tree will be viewed by many in our community. There will be a live auction of the trees when Santa departs at 7 p.m. Dec. 6.

All proceeds from the sale of the trees go to Minooka’s food pantries.

MORRIS – The Grundy County Historical Society will have Terry Kowalczyk speak on stained glass at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 in the lower level of the Morris Area Public Library, 606 N. Liberty St., Morris.

Kowalczyk will be talking about the history of stained glass and will discuss some local examples, according to a news release from the Historical Society.

She has created stained and etched glass, and has done repairs, maintenance, restorations and has taught etched and stained glass lessons. She has been making stained and etched glass for more than 30 years.

Kowalczyk has worked with and consulted with various companies, including G and B Glass and Lock, Moore Glass of Joliet, Banner Equipment, Harrah’s Casino and Grate Signs of Joliet.

arrested by Illinois State Police and booked into the Grundy County Jail Oct. 21 on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

It’s Turkey Supper Time!

veterans living on the streets of Chicago.

About 80 percent of the homeless in Chicago are Vietnam veterans, according to a news release from the Morris Rotary Club.

The Stand Down Day for veterans is Nov. 21 at the Humbolt Armory where the veterans in need will come to get checked out, be provided with food and given clothing to get them through the winter on the streets.

This is the third year Morris Rotary has participated in this project to gather coats.

More than 1,000 coats are needed. Last year, coats in larger sizes ran out quickly, so heavy coats in large, XXL and XXXL are requested.

Coats can be brought to the Morris Building and Loan or the Morris Hospital.

Coats will be taken now through Nov. 14 and then will be taken to be sorted and delivered to the armory for the Stand Down Day. Morris Rotarians, as well as some of its Interact students from Morris Community High school, help the veterans pick out a coat for the winter.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Building a robot with Legos sounds easy enough, but getting that robot to follow commands was another story for Minooka students in the Lego Robotics Club.

The Minooka Junior High School students, who spent the last six weeks trying to make that happen, have been working with club sponsor Kim Pittinaro and Aux Sable engineer Chuck Huddleston on the project.

“Programming was the hardest part,” seventh-grade student Sarah Engle said.

“We’ve had problems, but with the teachers help it’s been easier, he takes the time to explain it to us.”

Huddleston, who works for Aux Sable Liquid Products, said when the students joined the club they didn’t know anything about robotics. After giving them 10 to 20 minutes of lessons each week, they were able to program their robots to perform the actions required to complete a course.

Court awaits medical records in I-55 crash trial

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A civil lawsuit filed against the trucker who allegedly caused the Interstate 55 crash that led to five deaths in July has been expanded to include companies with which he was doing business at the time.

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz is charged with 15 counts of reckless homicide and two counts of falsifying logbook entries.

Espinal-Quiroz, 51, of Leesburg, Indiana, was in criminal court Wednesday for a pretrial hearing on the charges.

Authorities said the owner-operator was traveling 15 mph over the speed limit at 2:17 p.m. July 21 when his red Freightliner slammed into three vehicles backed up in the northbound lanes.

Traffic had been stalled by construction work on the Des Plaines River bridge in Channahon Township.

Kimberly K. Britton, 43, and Piper Britton, 11, of Urbana, Vicky L. Palacios, 54, of Coal City, Ulrike Blopleh, 48, of Channahon, and Timothy Osburn, 64, of Urbana, were killed in the chain-reaction collision.

Espinal-Quiroz allegedly told police at the scene he started work at 2:30 a.m. but had written in the logbook he had begun at 6:30 a.m.

Blopleh’s family has filed a federal lawsuit against Espinal-Quiroz and Espinal Trucking that was recently amended to include Steel Warehouse Inc. and Eagle Transport Group.

Espinal-Quiroz was transporting for Steel Warehouse at the time of the accident and was using a trailer leased from Eagle Transport Group, according to the lawsuit. “[Steel Warehouse] monitors what time the load was picked up in South Bend and when it was delivered to Par-

sons Company [in Roanoke] and Caterpillar in East Peoria,” said attorney Frank Andreano, who represents the Blopleh family.

“Because they employed Espinal [for product] transport, the company was required to make sure that was done safely, according to federal guidelines,” Andreano said.

Eagle Transport, who the suit claims was obligated to monitor the trailer’s safe use, did not return a message left asking for comment.

Steel Warehouse personnel referred questions to their attorney, who did not return a message left asking for comment.

“The records we have show that Espinal was routinely in violation of hours-of-service [regulations], which is the company’s duty to monitor and control,” Andreano said.

In a second civil action, Palacios’ son

has filed a wrongful death suit against the driver in Cook County.

Espinal-Quiroz appeared briefly before Judge Daniel Rozek on Wednesday. The defendant had used a Spanish-speaking interpreter for prior court appearances, but his lawyer told Rozek that Espinal-Quiroz is able to understand the proceedings better in English.

“Is that correct?” Rozek asked.

“Yes,” Espinal-Quiroz replied.

An assistant state’s attorney told Rozek medical records that were subpoenaed have not been received but are expected soon. Rozek scheduled the next pretrial hearing for December.

Espinal-Quiroz, who authorities said has been blind in one eye for 30 years, has driven trucks since 1991 with a vision waiver from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. His license was renewed the day before the July 21 crash.

Braidwood voters asked to pay more for police pensions

vshanker@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – City officials say police services could be eroded if voters do not pass a referendum to pay extra taxes to fund pensions Nov. 4.

The referendum asks Braidwood residents to pay an additional 0.2069 percent of their homes’ equalized assessed value to help pay for a retirement fund the city has been supporting for the past 13 years.

That would translate to $207 for a house with an equalized assessed value of $100,000.

The levy is estimated to bring in $225,000 in new taxes that would go straight to a local police pension fund.

“If it doesn’t pass, sooner or later, the police department could close,” said Rich Girot, police chief and city administrator for Braidwood, adding that the police pension fund is only 52 percent funded.

“The only way to pay without the levy is to cut staff,” he said. “First, you cut staff and hours, but eventually you cut the police department.”

If that happens, Girot said 911 calls will be handled by other departments, including county and state police. But

they won’t be obligated to patrol the city.

Mayor Bill Rulien said shutting down the department also could affect the economic development of the city.

“A Meijer or other business is not going to build in a town that doesn’t have a valid police department,” he said.

The levy would mean a single family residence having an equalized assessed value of $100,000 would pay an additional $207 in taxes this year.

“I feel like it’s definitely peanuts,” Rulien said. “It’s off

the equalized assessed value, not market value. Some people spend $3 to $4 on coffee at Starbucks every day. They should be able to spend quarters on the police department.”

According to city officials, for the past 13 years the city has been paying about $250,000 a year out of its general fund from a $3 million budget to pay for police pensions.

The city has put in more than $2 million into the pensions, but it still owes $1.8 million. Officers and employees on disability will start to dip into

their pensions soon, Girot said.

Police pension problem

Girot, the mayor of Braidwood from 1995 to 1999, said the police pension problem started in 2000.

Braidwood exceeded a population of 5,000 in the new census, which meant that the city’s police pensions had to be separated from the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund and managed locally, according to state law.

However, for some reason the city never did it, and was left to foot the pension bill that taxpayers otherwise would have contributed to.

“You can’t keep on taking it out of the general fund,” Rulien said about previous city administrations. “They were trying to get away with kicking the can down the road. But we want to solve this problem.”

cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The timing of the announcement of 18 local arrests on heroin charges had nothing to do with the upcoming November election, Sheriff Kevin Callahan said Wednesday, although his opponent, Ken Briley, disputes that.

“It’s certainly newsworthy whenever this happens, whether it’s two weeks before an election or in the middle of the year – it’s newsworthy,” Callahan said. “The public needs to know we are doing this on a daily basis. We’re passing this information on to our undercover agents. We’re fighting this epidemic.”

Callahan said the information on the arrests was released to his office by the Joliet Metropolitan Area Narcotics

Squad and, within days of receiving it, his office released it to the media.

The deputy director of the Joliet MANS, John Arizzi, said his organization just recently released information about the 18 arrests made in the past year on heroin delivery charges to recognize the Grundy County sheriff’s department, whose MANS deputy was the driving force behind all the arrests. That deputy’s name is not released because he or she does undercover work.

The last six or seven warrants needed to be served before the operation was wrapped up, and then the information was given to the Grundy sheriff’s department, Arizzi said. Callahan said his office received it a few days ago and then took some time putting the news release to-

gether, which was then released to the media.

“There was nothing political about it at all. The vast majority [of officers] in MANS are not in Grundy County,” Arizzi said.

With the growing heroin problem in the area, Arizzi said MANS tries to inform local departments of their efforts whenever possible so departments can inform their communities. Numerous arrests are released at one time, and often long after initial arrests are made, to protect informants until arrests are completed, he said.

“In this case, all the arrests came from one Grundy County agent and so we reported that back [to Grundy County],” Arizzi said.

Briley, running against Callahan in the Nov. 4 election for sheriff, said the sheriff’s de-

partment releasing all the arrests at one time is misleading to the public. It made it seem as though all the arrests were made at once, he said, rather than spread out over a year, with several of those arrested sitting in the Department of Corrections for months.

“I’m glad the sheriff’s department is getting heroin off the streets, but to mislead the newspaper and mislead the public, and release it two weeks before the election ... I have to question if it’s political,” Briley said.

Callahan said the timing was not deliberate and coincided with when MANS released the information to his department. He released it to the media to make sure his deputies were recognized for their work.

“I’m very proud of our deputies who are making street-lev-

el arrests, and very proud of our deputy assigned to MANS and the public deserves to know,” Callahan said.

Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said Wednesday the city will discuss doing this as well at a future committee meeting, to ensure it also complies with the new act.

Halloran said having district email addresses for board members will mean they won’t have to share their personal email with the community to conduct school business.

Emails sent through the high school system are archived, which is helpful since the email correspondence is subject to the Freedom of Information Act, just as personal emails that discuss school business are.

For the purpose of this act, social media sites or pages do not fall into the definition of an Internet website, Halloran said.

MORRIS – Local governments and school districts soon must comply with a state mandate making it easier to reach elected officials through electronic communication.

On Aug. 15, Gov. Pat Quinn signed a public act requiring local governments and school districts that serve populations of less than 1 million people, and that have a website, to post uniform email addresses for the public to electronically communicate with its elected officials.

The act is effective Jan. 1 and local governments and school districts have 90 days to comply.

At Monday’s Morris Community High School District 101 school board meeting, the new mandate was discussed.

“It was an informational item we discussed,” Superintendent Pat Halloran said on Wednesday. “It will give the public more access to our board members.”

Halloran said the way the mandate reads, elected high school board members will need an email address that ends with the same “@morrishs.org” that the district uses for teachers and staff.

Those actions were judged Wednesday by Chris Fonck of Aux Sable Liquid Products as part of the Three Rivers Education Partnership that partners business and education.

Pittinaro said the students were given a Lego Mindstorms kit, which includes everything needed to create the working robot.

The kit comes with instructions on how to build the robot. Some students chose to follow the instructions and others decided to let their imagination go and designed their own robots.

“We built ours with the book,” eighth grade student Megan Chiappetta said of her, and her partner, Peyton Kellinger’s robot. “I like using instructions to build things, and really the physical appearance doesn’t matter.”

Kellinger said the hardest part was figuring out how to program the color sensor so it didn’t interfere with the arm that would push a brick through the course before dropping it off the side of the table.

“We learned about making our own awesome robot, and how to make it do cool stuff,” Colletti said.

Kaiser said they thought they could be more creative.

The duo combined a race car and an army tank in what they dubbed a “race tank,” complete with tank wheels on the front and race car wheels on the back.

As they tested their robot, they quickly learned the two different wheel types weren’t working if they wanted it to complete the task.

Experimenting and learning is exactly what the intention of the club was.

“This is where math and science meet reality,” Pittinaro said.

Huddleston said one of the goals was to give students a way to participate in after-school activities that didn’t involve sports.

More than 75 students expressed interest in the club, but membership was kept to 20 students so they all could have the opportunity to build the robot and learn.

MORRIS – Immaculate Conception School students recently participated in a Diocesan-wide program called “Move Your Feet to Give A Child A Seat.”

This event took place to call attention to the good work of the Catholic Education Foundation of the Diocese of Joliet, according to a news release from I.C.S. Each I.C.S. student walked through the halls of the school, and as they passed the school office, they made contributions to help the foundation with its efforts.

The Catholic Education Foundation helps make it possible for students to attend Catholic school by providing tuition scholarships. Last year, it distributed more than $1.8 million to 1,306 qualified students. Several I.C.S. families were helped by scholarships provided by the foundation. I.C.S. students also benefit with local scholarships funded by the school’s many friends.

Stop politicizing Ebola response It was inevitable the Ebola outbreak would be politicized in the United States. That’s what we do – we trivialize important issues. But the important decisions that await President Barack Obama and Congress over how to respond to the emerging crisis cannot be based on political considerations. They must be based on what’s best for the public health of the country.

On Thursday, House Republicans pummeled federal health officials over a series of lapses, with some of them demanding that the U.S. impose a travel ban on people coming from West Africa.

The Obama administration has stumbled as well.

Responding to rising concern about the virus, Obama on Friday appointed a “czar” to coordinate the nation’s Ebola response whose sole qualification seems to be that he is a political fixer for Democrats. Ron Klain is what The New York Times called “a seasoned Democratic crisis-response operative,” who is former chief of staff for Vice Presidents Al Gore and Joe Biden “known for his ability to handle high-stakes and fast-moving political challenges.”

Great. The nation – and particularly its leaders – need to take a deep, deep breath.

The threat from Ebola is a concern, but the seasonal flu, which kills thousands each year, is a far bigger risk to most Americans. So far, as scary as Ebola is, only a handful of people have been infected in the U.S. and only one has died.

It’s true: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wasn’t as prepared as it claimed, and neither was the hospital in Dallas where the first U.S. Ebola patient died. It certainly appears CDC Director Tom Frieden overstated the agency’s preparedness when he said “we can stop Ebola in its tracks.” And the agency never should have allowed one of the nurses who treated the nation’s first Ebola fatality, Thomas Eric Duncan, to fly to Ohio. The CDC has made a series of embarrassing errors. But there is no reason to believe health officials cannot control the disease in this country. Because they can – and they will.

As Frieden has said repeatedly, a travel ban would keep health officials from effectively tracking the movement of people with symptoms of Ebola. A ban might make Americans feel more secure but it won’t make them more secure. Furthermore, a travel ban is only a temporary solution. A professor at Northeastern University created a computer model recently that considered how a travel ban would affect the spread of Ebola. He found that an 80 percent reduction in air traffic delayed the risk of an infected patient hitting these shores by only four weeks.

And there’s this: A travel ban might further destabilize the nations that are most affected, which could lead to the virus spreading to neighboring countries as people in West Africa flee the chaos.

‘Humanae Vitae’ echoes throughout Rome synod “The transmission of human life is a most serious role in which married people collaborate freely and responsibly with God the Creator.

It has always been a source of great joy to them, even though it sometimes entails many difficulties and hardships.”

The words of Paul VI are like the background music for the Extraordinary Synod on the Family that is wrapping up in Rome.

The opening words of the 1968 encyclical “Humanae Vitae” continue: “The fulfillment of this duty has always posed problems to the conscience of married people, but the recent course of human society and the concomitant changes have provoked new questions. The Church cannot ignore these questions, for they concern matters intimately connected with the life and happiness of human beings.”

New questions, indeed! They abound today. Questions about the very definition of marriage; about pervasive and destructive pornography; about the ethics of assisted reproduction. And about the effects all of these are having on how we view ourselves in relation to those closest to us.

Prophetically, “Humanae Vitae” warned that it is “cause for alarm ... that a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, and, disregarding her physical and emotional equilibrium, re-

Remarkably, the same church that sounded that alarm is now maligned as waging a “war on women.”

But of course, not everyone in the church stood with Paul VI. Dissent added to the fog of recent decades, where expectations changed as lives were ordered around the existence of the pill and abortion.

Today, birth and marriage rates are in decline. Wounds abound. For the sake of not only Catholic families, but also the health of the whole world, Pope Francis convened this synod to consider the fallout and how best to help. How to encounter people where they are and accompany them to something better – that is, set them on the self-sacrificial, radical, redeeming path of Christ. The meeting in Rome was only the beginning of an ongoing process that will include the pope’s expected visit to Philadelphia and other cities next fall, and another meeting in Rome next year.

Of course, that might not be what you heard about the Rome gathering.

When a working draft of a document was released by the Vatican press office, Al Sharpton explained that,

“A new Vatican document released

by Pope Francis is calling for the Church to have a more compassionate attitude toward gays.”

Conspicuously missing from most of the news coverage was that the document – incomplete though it was, having since gone through revisions and corrections – directly cited and reaffirmed “Humanae Vitae.” And the fact that the synod was culminating in Pope Francis beatifying its author – a step on the road to sainthood.

Self-professed Catholics have gotten caught up in the confusing, exhilarating and disruptive winds of the sexual revolution in recent decades.

At this synod, rather than an upending of church teachings, there was a resetting.

Before reporting all kinds of wild things that weren’t happening, most media and commentary noticed a changed tone in the document. The synod was not changing doctrine, but it was seeking to find pastoral solutions to challenges facing good people who want to live good lives.

What was on display was a draft deliberately marinated in an accessible language of mercy and encounter, words Pope Francis often uses.

It will all depend on how many schools larger than Morris get in.

On thing that is certain, though. The Redskins will not take LaSalle-Peru lightly.

“Obviously, the kids are excited and happy after two big wins the last two weeks,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said.

“But I have been reminding them that they have to stay focused. I don’t care what L-P’s record is. They are the next step in the process. We have to beat them in order to make it into the playoffs. It’s no different than the last two weeks.”

Although the Redskins have won their last two games, Thorson sees things that his team can do better.

“Offensively, we need to be more consistent,” he said. “We definitely need to block better, and I would love to see us put up some points. It we want to win this week and make a run in the playoffs, we will have to keep getting better offensively.

The high school football season is heading into its ninth and final week of the regular season, and the Morris Daily Herald coverage area has only one team that has clinched a playoff spot. Coal City, with a record of 6-2 entering Friday night’s game against Seneca, is the only area team assured of postseason play.

That could change Friday night, as the rest of the teams are 4-4 and all three have enough playoff points that, if they win, they would get in.

As previously mentioned, Seneca takes on Coal City. The Fighting Irish started off the season with a promising 4-1 record, but have dropped their last three and Coal City is coming off one of their best games.

It doesn’t bode tremendously well for the Irish, but stranger things have happened when these two teams get together.

Minooka. meanwhile, has been on a roller-coaster ride most of the season. In the top-

sy-turvy Southwest Prairie Conference, the only sure thing lately seems to be that Oswego will win the league title. After that, it’s up for grabs. Consider Minooka’s Friday night opponent, Plainfield North. Just a couple of weeks ago, the Tigers were trailing Romeoville 40-7 in the first half. They went on to win that game 43-40. They come into the game with a 5-3 record, but clearly the Tigers can be beaten. The question is whether or not Minooka can do it. The added incentive of “win or be done for the year” might be just the added boost the Indians need.

Lastly, Morris has lifted itself off the scrap heap of a 2-4 start and won its last two games against Kaneland and Sycamore to move to 4-4 entering Friday night’s game against LaSalle-Peru. The Cavaliers have won only one game in the last two seasons, and have been outscored 361-42 in eight games, all losses, this year. So, it appears in all likelihood that the only question that will remain for the Redskins after Friday is if

Lines and Davy, who racked up an impressive 23-2 record this season, finished second at the Plainfield East Sectional last weekend, but they both feel that the experience they gained was more important than the place in which they finished.

“The sectional had great competition,” Lines said. “It was good to play against that competition because that’s what we are going to be seeing at state. Monica is probably the better of us at

the net. She can put those points away really well.”

“That match could have gone either way,” Davy said. “We played very well, and we feel like we are getting better. Leah does a good job of setting me up for the shots at the net. We work well together that way.”

Though it is her second trip to state in as many seasons, Megan Davy, who is 17-8 this season, knows that her case isn’t the norm.

“I know it’s not that easy,” she said. “I’ve been pretty lucky as far as that goes. MORRIS – For the third straight year, the Morris girls tennis doubles team of first cousins Monica Davy and Leah Lines – both seniors – will be taking part in the IHSA state tournament in the northwest suburbs, hosted by Buffalo Grove High School. And, for the second straight year, Morris sophomore Megan Davy, Monica’s sister, will be taking part in the singles tournament.

So far, though, one of them have made it through to the second day of the tournament, and that’s a goal that the doubles team set at the start of the season.

“We are so pumped,” Monica Davy said as the trio prepared to leave Morris on Wednesday after school. Their matches all start at 8 a.m. today and proceed throughout the day in a double-elimination format. “This is our third year going up there, so we kind of know what to expect with all the traveling to different schools you have to do.”

What the Lines-Davy team doesn’t know much about is their first-round opponent, Megan LaRose and Mallory Abert of Edwardsville, which they will play at Hoffman Estates High School.

“We don’t know a lot about them,” Lines admitted. “We just want to go out there and play our best. We feel like we have been getting better with each match lately, and if we keep doing that we have a pretty good shot.”

So who are the Bears’ leaders?

I really do believe it’s time to put the Bears postgame locker room dustup following the loss to the Dolphins behind us.

It was unfortunate and not something that should be ignored or just passed off, and it’s not something that happens often in locker rooms around the league.

But it’s also really not that big a deal if you believe, as I do, there is no rift or turmoil among Bears players. The locker room isn’t about to erupt and this group of Bears players do seem to be a fairly tight group, exactly as head coach and team members continue to tell us.

Rather than being a sign of more ominous things to come, it was most likely just an overflow of emotions following a tough loss that will have little impact on the future of this Bears team.

What it has done, though, is touch off a different question or topic of conversation about the 2014 Chicago Bears. Who are the leaders of this football team, who should they be and what kind of job are they doing?

Perhaps Allen and Trestman are both right.

But I have never seen a business being run successfully by a bunch of talented guys with whoever feels like it at the time stepping up and leading and getting everyone else to follow.

Leadership by committee is often no leadership at all.

Could it be one of the reasons the Bears are 3-4 and floundering right now?

If you are in a bridge slam, take some extra time, because so many points are at stake. In this deal, how should South play in six spades after West leads the club queen?

North’s two-no-trump response showed a balanced hand with eight points or more. South, knowing that his side had at least an eight-card spade fit, used the Gerber convention, asking for aces.

The original declarer took the first trick with dummy’s club king and played a spade to his king -- and had to concede down one when West discarded.

If the spades were 2-2 or 3-1, there would not have been a problem.

So South should have slammed his attention on dealing with a 4-0 break.

If West had all four, the contract was unmakable. But when East had four, they could be picked up if South could lead through East’s 10-nine twice. But that required two dummy entries: the heart ace and club king.

Declarer had to win the first trick in his hand and lead the spade king.

Suppose East won with his ace and returned his second club. South would have won in the dummy and played a spade. Presumably East would have put in his nine or 10, but declarer would have won, returned to dummy with a heart, and finessed East out of his last two trumps.

Mild exercise, therapies can relieve back pain Dear Doctor K: I have frequent back pain. I usually take acetaminophen (the Tylenol brand), but I hear it may not be effective for back pain. Is there anything to that?

Dear Reader: If you’d asked me that question even a year ago, I would have said, “Acetaminophen works fine for most people.” Lots of people are bothered by back pain.

When it strikes, all you want is relief -- and fast.

Many folks turn to overthe-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin).

Most doctors I know would have shared my impression that acetaminophen works for back pain.

I respect the opinions of seasoned doctors, but I also know that there is no substitute for actually studying a question.

Indeed, a recent study has challenged my long-standing assumption about the value of acetaminophen for back pain.

Researchers wanted to know if acetaminophen shortened the time from the start of acute back pain (back pain that comes on suddenly) to complete relief. What they found was surprising.

For people who used acetaminophen only when their back pain bothered them, it took about 17 days to get complete relief.

For those who took the medication three times a day, it also took about 17 days for full relief. And for those who took a placebo – a sugar pill with no medicine at all – the time to recovery was 16 days. In other words, the medication made no difference in how fast back pain went away and stayed away. In addition, all three groups had similar experiences in terms of the severity of their pain, disability and function.

Does this mean that you shouldn’t bother to use

Randomized studies like this can tell you the reaction of the average person in the study. But people are all different. It may be that some people really do get good relief from acetaminophen, even if the average person doesn’t. So if it works for you, stick with it.

But acetaminophen does have its own risks and side effects. Taking too much acetaminophen can seriously damage the liver. Ideally, the average healthy adult shouldn’t take more than 3,000 milligrams a day.

The safest option is to try to get through the worst of your back pain without medication: • Use cold compresses or an ice pack, not heat, immediately after an injury.

About 48 hours after back pain hits, heat may be more helpful. The warmth soothes and relaxes aching muscles.

• Try to keep moving. A limited amount of activity is better than lying in bed.

Ask your doctor about appropriate exercises to start sooner rather than later. Exercise therapy can help heal acute back pain and help prevent a repeat episode.

• Chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, massage or yoga provide relief for some people with acute back pain. Several studies support using these alternative/complementary therapies.

Many people can relieve their back pain with these simple measures. If they don’t provide complete relief, then non-prescription NSAID medicines often will do the trick.
