Plan seeks approval for future east-west runway addition

MORRIS – Members of the city’s Morris Airport Committee are heading Friday to Springfield to present a five-year plan for Morris Municipal Airport to the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics for approval.

In a meeting Wednesday morning, the committee discussed the next proposed phase of improvements to the airport, which received votes by aldermen Julian Houston and Bill Martin in favor of a presenta-

tion to the state Friday. Alderman Jeff Wachowski did not attend.

The plan calls for a request to have an environmental assessment started in the next year. The purpose of the study is to test the potential effects of adding an east-west runway.

The airport currently has one north-south runway.

If there’s a positive result on the environmental assessment, the city would look at purchasing property for the runway in 2017 and potentially begin construction on the runway in 2018, Morris Municipal Airport Manager Jeff Vogen said.

The environmental assessment, to be done by the EPA, can take upwards of a year to complete, Vogen said. On top of that, it’s hard to know how fast construction projects will progress, he said. That’s why the city is pushing to start the

environmental assessment as soon as possible.

Mayor Richard Kopczick, City Engineer Guy Christensen, Houston and Vogen are expected to present the plan, called the Transportation Improvement Projects, to the Division of Aeronautics.

Kopczick said when a municipality presents its plan to the division, it’s typical for a majority of a plan to be approved, sometimes with necessary tweaks. He also said nothing is a guarantee. Vogen said any community with a municipal airport makes annual presentations.

The long-awaited east-west runway addition would help growth of the airport and open up travel to small aircrafts on days when strong east-west winds affect takeoffs on the north-south runway.

south runway extension project should be completed by Nov. 1 if weather permits, Vogen said.

The 500-foot runway addition is setting the stage for larger aircrafts to land at the airport, and includes an upgraded runway lighting system.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Kopczick said.

Vogen said the airport is tentatively scheduled to be closed starting Monday to allow for safe striping of the runway.

“The lighting is being installed as we speak,” Vogen said.

The project started later than expected because of weather. The city also intends to widen and overlay the northsouth runway so corporate jets can land in Morris more consistently.

“People don’t realize the business that an airport can bring in,” Vogen said.

Stop.

Dr. George Roebuck, a Morris optometrist, warns residents that ordering contacts online from an unknown seller without a prescription is not only illegal – it’s dangerous.

“When you go online and you see these goofy contacts for $20, you are getting something that is not regulated,” Roebuck said. “It’s an eye infection made easy.”

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation recently sent out a news release reminding the public that purchasing colored contact lenses from anyone other than a licensed eye care professional or pharmacist is dangerous.

“In recent years, illegally purchased colored contacts have flooded the retail market during Halloween and are most often found at malls, beauty supply stores and via online websites. These lenses are often made overseas in non-FDA

Roebuck said even if the materials aren’t toxic, without a proper exam and fitting the contacts can cause damage to the eye.

“In addition to having an exam to make sure the contacts fit, our staff teaches them how to put them in, how to take them out and how to take care of them,” he said. “It has to breathe right; if it doesn’t fit right, it’s not safe.”

Both Roebuck and the IDFPR warn that the use of these contacts can cause infections that can lead to corneal ulcers, and ultimately blindness if left untreated.

Other risks include scratches from an ill-fitting lens, bacte-

ria buildup in the eye and permanent scarring.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A Geographical Information Services application that almost never was aided the Emergency Management Agency and the Grundy County assessor after the EF-3 tornado that hit Coal City on June 22.

“In 2013, at the time of the Diamond tornado, there was a GIS application called Collector that had just came out,” Dave Ostrander, GIS analyst with Grundy County, said.

“You could use it on a phone or tablet to collect data. When that tornado hit, right away I thought of the app.”

Ostrander took the base application and added the necessary data he felt would be needed if the county faced another disaster, never realizing he would be using it less than two years later.

Since the application’s development, Joe Schroeder, EMA director, and Ostrander discussed the need to train people with the application before they were in a disaster response effort.

That training never came, and in June Ostrander found himself testing the app to see if it could aid in the recovery efforts in Coal City.

He quickly learned that after a disaster when cell service was spotty, the application couldn’t perform as it was designed, uploading data

and photos immediately to be shared with emergency personnel.

“In March, they had put out an update to allow disconnected editing,” he said. “I went to the office and freaked out about it. I thought, ‘I can’t hand it out to people, it doesn’t work.’ ” He updated the capability, and by the next day he was ready to try the application out in real time.

He and Grundy County Assessor Stephanie Kennedy went out at the same time another organizer was sending out a volunteer team of 30 assessors to gather data and images of the aftermath.

“It was too much to get on 30 devices and train the people, and the assessor said she would need the same data, so she and I went door-to-door separately,” Ostrander said.

“The Cook County guy told the 30 volunteers that they should be getting to 12 houses an hour. We started clocking our speed and realized we were doing 40 to 50 homes an hour.”

He said it took him and Kennedy three days to do what 30 people did in one day, which encouraged him that if they were ready for another disaster they would be able to get the data much quicker.

She later admitted that she did not know how to clean her lenses and that she was unaware that she could not

sleep in her contact lenses.

The patient ended up having a severe pseudomonas corneal ulcer. She now has permanent vision loss.”

Roebuck said he sees eye infections from the unregulated contacts every year.

Jill Weiss, daughter and employee of Roebuck, said just because you shouldn’t buy them online or at a beauty store doesn’t mean you have to go without the cool looks available.

Theater contacts that are

made in the United States and regulated by the FDA are available through most eye doctor offices.

While getting an eye exam and getting fitted for the contacts is more costly than ordering them online, Roebuck said the end cost could save hundreds of dollars if the person using the illegal contacts gets an eye infection that needs to be treated, or causes permanent vision loss.

Sales of contact lenses to consumers without a valid

prescription are considered unlicensed practice of optometry and subject to cease and desist orders and civil fines of up to $10,000.

Illinois residents are encouraged to notify state officials if they see lenses for sale at retail outlets that do not require a prescription from a licensed eye-care professional. Consumers can file complaints at www.idfpr.com or by calling the IDFPR consumer hotline number at 888-4734858.

Heroin addiction and its outcomes – such as fractured relationships and potentially death – can make anyone a victim, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said.

To continue raising awareness of the dangers of heroin and how to detect use, It Doesn’t Start With Heroin, the third Grundy County organized heroin forum, will be held 6 to 8 p.m.

Monday at Morris Community High School.

Guest speakers Rodney and Angela Ridgley, who lost their daughter to heroin addiction, will share their story. Helland said he reached out to the Ridgleys because of an obituary that left no mystery about what cost their daughter her life.

“I thought, ‘Wow.’ Usually, you’re left to guess what the cause of death was in an obituary,” Helland said. “It was very sad. I told them they have a powerful story to tell and asked that they tell it.”

The most striking thing about this particular case was that the Ridgleys said because of how great of a person their daughter was, they knew it could happen to anyone. Helland is hoping that by sharing warning signs, people are able to intervene if they’re not first able to prevent use.

People often start using heroin after becoming addicted to pain medications, Helland said, as heroin on the street is cheap-

Also sharing his story will be keynote speaker Tim Ryan, a former nationally-ranked barefoot skier and successful entrepreneur who became a heroin addict. It reached the point where Ryan ended up doing heroin with his son. While Ryan was able to kick his habit in prison, his son wasn’t as lucky.

“We want to focus on preventing the bad choices that lead to use and addiction,” Helland said. “Tim Ryan’s wife didn’t know he was using for a year and a half. He can tell people how he ended up at that point.”

Helland said addicts are in constant denial, and stories such as the Ridgleys’ will shed light on why detection and treatment didn’t work.

District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said Helland was looking for a location to host the event and Morris Community High School was glad to do so. It has hosted alcohol and bullying prevention events, among others, Halloran said.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A new phone app introduced by the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency will allow users to be notified immediately of emergencies and give them a place to report damage.

EMA Director Joe Schroeder said the app provides an economical and user-friendly way to get emergency alerts out to residents.

“We used to use Reverse 911 service funded by the ETSB, we no longer use that and had to develop a plan to still get the information to the residents,” Schroeder said.

Schroeder said Reverse 911 is a public safety communications system developed by Cassidian Communications that allows users to pick a geographic area to which to push alerts.

The cost of the system is $17,000 a year and it dials home phones within the defined area.

With many residents giving up their landline and going to strictly cellphones, the app made sense to Schroeder. The cost to the county to get the app up and running was also a deciding factor with the bill coming in at just less than $3,000.

In addition to alerting the public of dangers, the app also has a way the public can alert the EMA of damage after a storm or weather event.

By going to the “report damage” button in the app it allows users to specify the type of damage, where the damage is located, and the date and time. In addition to submitting text about the damage, users can also add an image to show the damage they are discussing.

If there is more than one person reporting damage in a specific area, the EMA can send someone from its office out to investigate the damage.

“The report feature is one of the features I’m most looking forward to,” Schroeder said.

“If one, two or three people in an isolated area report damage we can send that to the weather service for their use when they work to validate what they see on radar.”

The app also provides a weather feature that will give you current and forecasted weather for where you are located, as well as show you weather in Grundy County even when you are away on vacation.

There are also buttons that give contact information for the county, links to social media accounts run by EMA, and a section for educating residents on preparedness for different events.

The app can be found and downloaded free in iTunes or in your phone’s app store.

World Trade Center piece to travel through Will, Grundy counties JOLIET – A piece of the World Trade Center will be traveling Friday on Interstate 80.

A steel beam belonging to one of the walls of the World Trade Center will make its way to Fort Collins, Colorado, with the help of Poudre Fire Authority firefighters, who are from the same city. The Fire Authority has been granted the privilege of owning the piece BECAUSE OF the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund.

According to a traffic advisory, I-80 westbound will be shut down from about 9 to 11 a.m.

Friday as the beam is being delivered.

Drivers are encouraged to find other routes during that time.

The journey began Wednesday at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York and will include

several stops before firefighters reach their destination.

The firefighters who are bringing the World Trade Center piece were responders when the 9/11 attack occurred and helped dig through the rubble of the fallen towers in the weeks that followed, said Patrick Love, Poudre Fire Authority spokesman.

Fire Authority officials said firefighters departed Wednesday from the New York airport and will have traveled to State College, Pennsylvania, where they will stay with Patton Township firefighters overnight.

They will then leave Thursday morning and travel to South Bend, Indiana to stay with firefighters there overnight. Then they will travel Friday to Lincoln, Nebraska and arrive Saturday afternoon at Fort Collins.

BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Chris Baker, a Christian tattoo artist and founder of the Oswego-based INK 180 Ministry, said many people think sex trafficking is prostitution, strictly an inner-city problem or resembles the 2008 movie, “Taken,” which dealt with kidnapping and sex slavery.

“I don’t care if people hate tattoos. It doesn’t break my heart, and I’m not here to convert people into tattoo-lovers,” Baker said. “But I am here to give people a second chance in life and to get rid of the marks that are holding them back in life – or change them into something positive.”

For Baker, whose tattoos mostly reflect his Irish heritage and love for Jesus, tattoos are outward manifestations of the inner person, and he’s proud to wear them. Still, Baker does regret one tattoo – his initials, inked on his 18th birthday.

“It was dumb,” Baker said.

“I wish people would think before they get a tattoo and not get something they will regret later in life or not like.”

“I was a very selfish and greedy person,” Baker said.

“At the time, I just wanted to get something bigger and better instead of using the gift God gave me to give someone else a second chance.”

Until six years ago, Baker could afford to be greedy. Baker said he earned $100,000 a year working for a Fortune 50 company – until the company laid him off, and Baker lost his house and cars.

Baker said he was depressed and self-destructive. He said his wife, Lisa Baker, insisted he seek help. They saw a counselor in Naperville who prayed for them. The next day, Baker went to church and began talking to God about his calling.

“The answer I got was, ‘What do you love to do more than anything else, and will you do it for free?’” Baker said.

“Well, I love tattooing, but no way is that doing God’s work.”

Baker said other Christians often criticized his tattoos – Baker, who has loved art since childhood, is covered in them – and cited their interpretations of Bible passages to support their criticism.

The Teen Cyber Safety Class is just one aspect of Baker’s INK 180 Ministry.

Since its inception four years ago, Baker’s ministry has performed more than 2,600 free tattoo removals. Clients include survivors of sex trafficking and domestic violence along with individuals previously associated with gangs.

Baker also does cover-ups for self-harm victims and removals for young people entering the military. About 80 percent of the tattoo work Baker does is ministry-related, he said.

Of the remaining 20 percent, 75 percent of the tattoos Baker inks are Christian-themed.

She’s funny, she makes patients smile and feel comfortable, and she goes out of her way to help with the little things. By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With one game remaining on the schedule, the Morris football team wants to end on a high note Friday when they visit LaSalle-Peru. The IHSA playoffs are no longer a possibility for the Redskins, who suffered their fifth loss of the season Oct. 16 at Sycamore and will be ineligible for postseason play.

LaSalle-Peru sports an identical 3-5 record and will also miss the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean Friday night’s game will be just two teams going through the motions to end the season.

“There’s pride on the line here,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “We’re all disappointed with how things have gone, and we’re not happy about where we are at right now.

“But, we have one game left, and we want to finish the season on the right note. We want to send the seniors out on a high note. It’s their last game, and they don’t need any help getting fired up for it. For the juniors, this is a way for them to take a right step toward getting ready for next year.”

Morris started the season with a 3-1 record, the only loss coming to Washington, which is currently 8-0, and the Redskins handed 7-1 Sterling its only loss of the year.

But consecutive losses to Yorkville, DeKalb, Kaneland and Sycamore have eliminated Morris from the playoffs for the second time in the past three years.

LaSalle-Peru. meanwhile, had been 1-17 over the previous two seasons entering 2015. The Cavailiers won two of their first three games, and their other win is against Ottawa, who is 4-4. They lost to Kaneland. 31-12, last week.

“LaSalle-Peru is better than they have been,” Thorson said.

Morris soccer reaches regional title game STAFF REPORTS LaSALLE – After a long season of injuries and losses, the Morris boys soccer team was able to start the postseason with a victory Tuesday night, defeating Streator, 3-2, in the semifinals of the Class 2A LaSalle-Peru Regional.

Morris’ first goal came 23 minutes into the game after a foul outside the goalie box.

On a direct kick, Matt Samolis hit the top cross bar, and the ball bounced down into the net.

The second goal came 10 minutes later from Conner Shaw, who dribbled through two defenders to shoot from 20 yards out.

In the second half, Streator scored with minutes remaining to make it 2-1 before tying the score at 2 with a goal at the 8:00 mark.

However, two key Morris subs – Josh Lain and Alex Randall – changed the last 1:39, when Randall gave a perfect switch to Lain, who dribbled, cut back and put the ball in the back of the net.

Morris now tries for its fifth straight regional championship at 3 p.m. Saturday against Geneseo, which defeated LaSalle-Peru, 6-0, in the other semifinal.

“We did a really great job in the first half of dominating the possession game,” Morris coach David Valdivia said. “We won the balls in the air, as well as getting a lot of scoring opportunities and corner kicks.

The second half was another

story, as we played Streator’s game and lost momentum.

“We had a tough season with injuries, to the point that Matt Borgstrom, our senior goalie, is playing center back and our sophomore keeper is playing. We had eight sophomores, one junior and two seniors start against Streator.”

Two uppercut rules to keep in mind

A button at the interesting Computer Museum in Boston says, “Usenet isn’t a right. It’s a right, a left, and a swift uppercut to the jaw.”

Yesterday, we looked at the bridge uppercut, but there are two important aspects that must be kept in mind by the defenders – both relevant in this deal.

South is in four hearts. How should the defenders card to defeat the contract? Be precise.

As in yesterday’s column, fourth hand made a natural overcall in opener’s minor. North was right to bid two hearts with four-card support, despite his minimum.

West starts with the diamond ace: eight, 10, seven. West cashes the diamond queen: nine, three, six. What now?

This deal was played in a three-table social duplicate. The first West continued with his diamond king. East, thinking that this would win the trick, discarded a low spade. South ruffed, drew trumps, conceded a spade trick, and claimed.

At the second table, West carefully led a low diamond at trick three, which his partner ruffed with the heart jack.

Momentarily, this looked like a lethal uppercut, gaining a trump trick for the defenders. However, South calmly discarded his spade loser and made his contract.

The third West knew that when you try for an uppercut, you should cash all of your side-suit tricks first. Before the third diamond, West took his spade ace. Then he also carefully led a low diamond to force his partner to ruff, and the contract went down one.

South lost two diamonds, one spade and one heart.

Old habits die hard during woman’s transition to a man Dear Abby: My daughter has been in a lesbian relationship for 14 years. They recently took me to lunch and informed me her partner, “Nicole,” is in the process of transitioning to a male.

Nicole has now legally changed her name to “Nick” and has begun hormone treatments. They have been going to counseling for the past six months. Since Nick began the transition, I have seen him three times. Last week when I was visiting, I accidentally called Nick by the wrong pronoun, “she” instead of “he,” a couple of times. I was either immediately corrected or ignored until I realized I had used the wrong word. It hurt my feelings.
