“Parents spend a lot of money on costumes. This is a nice way to give them an additional place to wear them while bringing the community together,” said Sarah Porzel, family and community engagement director at the Morris YMCA. The event will start off with

a hip-hop fit class where participants are encouraged to attend dressed to impress in their costumes.

At 12:30 p.m., kids will get to participate in the Monster Dash, a run that will take them around the block, ending at the YMCA where treats await them.

The event, which is free and open to everyone regardless of

Trick-or-treating will take place in the parking lot, where the business community and area vendors have been invited to pass out goodies from the trunks of their cars in the first annual trunk-or-treat event hosted by the YMCA. “It’s another way to get involved in the community,” Porzel said. “We are getting businesses involved and becoming

socially responsible in helping our neighbors.”

Porzel said there still are slots available to those who would like to participate in the trunk-or-treat portion of the event. Those interested in participating can call the YMCA to inquire.

“We’re excited to host community events at our facility,” Executive Director Missy Durkin said. “We didn’t have a centrally located location for so long. We’re anxious to open our doors to the whole community now to enjoy a great day with their families.”

Porzel said children between the age of 6 and 12 also are invited to submit original artwork for a chance to be featured on the Greater Joliet Area YMCA 2015 holiday card.

The design contest is open to YMCA members who want to show off their artistic talents.

Deadline for the contest is 8 p.m. Friday.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Community High School drama program is ready to debut its most difficult show in director Andrea Gustafson’s tenure.

The growth of the program will be on display Friday through Sunday, when more than 50 cast members and 20 crew members perform “The Sparrow,” a 2007 play about forgiveness and acceptance.

The content, choreography, staging and lighting are advanced compared to the classics MCHS has performed, Gustafson said.

“It’s the hardest show we’ve done,” Gustafson said. “But it’s worth it to do something different and modern and bring it to Morris.”

After seeing the show performed live, Gustafson wanted to bring it to Morris. She just wasn’t sure if the program was ready for it yet. Through cast and crew development and the addition of improved lighting, it became possible.

Alexa Rain plays Emily Book, a teenage girl returning to the town of Spring Farm for her senior year of high school 10 years after the town was left to recover from an unfortunate accident. The role, and play, include beautifully written choreography and movement, Gustafson said.

“It’s a daunting role with tons of physical work,” Gustafson said. “She handles it

like a pro.”

Rain said her biggest challenge was the movement required of her role, where she has to sell that she’s flying.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy Resource of Opportunity for Wellness and Sustainability garden was created in May 2014 at the Grundy County Administration Building to help provide nutrition to the community.

After finishing the second growing season, the Grundy County Health Department is looking at ways to expand the garden and to further open it to the community.

“When we first initiated this for the community, we wanted to keep it at home, near the administration building,” Health Department Director Phil Jass said. “We’ve had a successful two years, and we are now looking at more community buy-in.”

The original garden was constructed with 10 aboveground, ADA-compliant boxes where plants and seeds could grow and be tended by anyone in the community.

To make the garden more accessible, Jass and office manager Dian Brown said they worked with the Morris Cruise Night committee and had mesh installed that made the grassy area around the boxes accessible to those using

The mission for the garden was to promote community involvement for seniors and veterans, to teach Women, Infant and Children program clients about nutrition, and to promote horticulture therapy to help improve memory, cognitive abilities and more.

In addition, the mission was to give back to the community and address the three Illinois Project for Local Assessment of Needs areas for improvement: mental health and substance abuse, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk factors, and childhood obesity.

Brown said the gardens were tended by volunteers scheduled May through October to pick, weed and prune the plants, with the plants going back to the community through We Care of Grundy

County, as well as with WIC clients.

A range of vegetables has come from the garden over the past two years including carrots, eggplants, beans, broccoli, snow peas, peppers and squash, as well as fruits, such as blackberries and strawberries.

As the county looks toward the 2016 growing year, officials plan to install five more boxes for additional garden space and make all 15 boxes available to people in the community.

JOLIET – Membership for each Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees committee has been established following the appointment of new members.

The board committees cover everything from capital projects to legislative impact on the college to environmental initiatives. At least two JJC board members sit on each of the committees, and committee meetings are open to the public.

In the past month, board trustees have appointed two members – Alicia Morales and Patricia Deiters – to fill seats vacated by former Chairwoman Tina Markley and trustee Barb Adams, who both resigned unexpectedly at an Au-

gust meeting.

The board committees now active at JJC include those for the following topics: buildings and grounds, Illinois Community College Trustees Association and Association of Community College Trustees, legislative oversight and government officials recognition, J.D. Ross Extraordinary Service Award, president evaluation and sustainability.

Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich decided to bring the sustainability committee back into action as part of the college’s overall effort to pursue environmentally friendly initiatives.

“I wanted to bring it back because I think it’s good we have something like that so the people of [JJC District 525] know we got a conscience about sustainability,” Wun-

derlich said.

The JJC district covers several counties, including Grundy, Will and Livingston.

Wunderlich said the building and grounds committee, which addresses bid statuses and capital projects, will be chaired by Trustee Michael O’Connell and include Trustee Dan O’Connell, who was appointed Sept. 8 after former Chairman Jeff May’s resignation because of a health issue in July.

The ICCTA and ACCT committee will have Trustee Maureen Broderick as a delegate and Wunderlich as an alternate, he said. The delegate gathers information from those two organizations that is relevant to JJC, he said.

6 Joliet college appoints committee members

More parking to be added downtown

The Morris City Council approved Monday night, with a 6-0 vote, the purchase of a nearly 4,000-square-foot empty lot at the northwest corner of Main Street and Route 47 from the State of Illinois for $24,000.

done by City Engineer Guy Christensen, who said no new entrances are proposed and the exit will be to the north. The city will look to start reconfiguring the lot next year.

Kopczick said it was intended to be a tax increment financing district purchase but the city realized it is not in the TIF district. With that being the case, the purchase will come out of the city’s general fund, Christensen said.

A TIF district is an area in which assessed property values

are frozen and the difference in tax revenue generated between the frozen tax value and present-day value goes into a fund to be used for improvements to properties within the district.

In June, the city approved purchase of a larger lot out of the TIF fund for $130,000.

The lot purchase approved Monday was once home to an ambulance service, Kopczick said, and three appraisals were done on the property. One was at $23,000, one was $24,000 and one was $25,000.

In an effort to end the school year as close to the listed end date as possible, there’s a chance Morris Community High School students’ hopes for a snow day could be shoveled away on some days. It all depends on how roadway and

weather conditions improve on mornings when the decision to cancel school is a close call.

Many districts use a late start concept when inclement weather strikes, District 101 Superintendent Pat Halloran said, whether it be bitter cold, snow or fog. On days when

there’s the potential for a cancellation, Halloran is checking roads about 3:30 a.m. and monitoring the weather to see how safe and feasible it would be to conduct a school day.

“I have to make a decision by 5:15 a.m.,” Halloran said.

Although Kier said she is very upbeat, she is much more of a collected person than McGrath. So Kier took the character home with her, so to speak, by saying random, cheerful phrases around her family.

Dylan Obrochta plays science teacher Dan Christopher, who tries to guide Book on a positive path at Spring Farm High School even though he was affected by the same accident.

“What I love about my character is everyone is angry at one point but he’s forgiving throughout,” Obrochta said.

He described the play as an emotional roller coaster where characters struggle in deciding whether to accept Book.

The major theme the audience can identify with, Obrochta said, is how to cope with a loss.

Kier said her favorite part is the suspense, which she called “killer,” while Rain loves the plot twists in the story – another element different from Morris’ recent productions, she said.

FAMILY TABLE How to do right by summer tomatoes

By SARA MOULTON The Associated Press If you’re like me, you believe that a fresh, ripe tomato is one of the best things about summer. And this tart is an ode to the tomato in season – and a lesson about how to make the most of it.

Let’s start with how to choose the best tomatoes. First, pick up your candidate, smell the stem and confirm that it smells strongly like a tomato.

Next, figure out if it is juicy by hefting it. You want a heavy tomato; if it’s heavy, it’s juicy.

Do not seed the tomatoes.

Once upon a time we routinely seeded them, a nod to the French ideal of finesse, which decreed that seeds were crude.

Years later, I read a story in Cook’s Illustrated magazine that persuaded me that discarding the seeds is a mistake.

Apparently, the seeds and the jelly surrounding them are the most flavorful parts of the tomato. And you save a bunch of prep time when you don’t bother to remove the seeds.

One of the main reasons we love tomatoes in season is because they’re so juicy. That’s great when we eat them raw, not so great when we’re making a tomato pie. How to keep juicy tomatoes from turning that pie into a watery mess? By slicing and salting them ahead of time. The salt delivers a onetwo punch, draining the tomato of its excess liquid and concentrating its natural flavors.

ounces store-bought pie dough 1∏ pounds large tomatoes Kosher salt 1 ⁄4 cup plus 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1∏ cups coarsely grated Gruyere cheese 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 garlic clove, finely minced 1 ⁄4 cup chopped fresh herbs, such as mint, basil, thyme, chives, tarragon or a mix On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pie dough until 1⁄8 inch thick.

Transfer the dough to a 10-inch tart pan with a removable bottom, easing the dough into the pan and pressing it into the corners. Trim off any excess dough hanging over the edge. Prick the dough all over with a fork, then chill it for 1 hour.

Heat the oven to 375 F. Line the pie shell with foil and fill it with pie weights, dried beans or rice.

Bake in the lower third of the oven until it is opaque throughout, about 25 minutes. Carefully remove the weights and foil. Return the shell to the oven and bake until light golden, about another 8 minutes. Transfer the tart shell to a rack and let it cool 15 minutes.

While the tart shell is baking, slice the tomatoes1⁄3 inch thick, sprinkle them liberally with salt, then arrange them on a wire rack to drain over the sink or a rimmed baking sheet.

Increase the oven temperature to 400 F. Spread the mustard evenly over the bottom of the tart shell, then sprinkle the cheese over it. Pat the tomatoes dry and arrange them over the cheese in one overlapping layer. Bake on the oven’s middle shelf until the pastry is golden brown and the tomatoes are very soft, 35 to

40 minutes.

In a small bowl, stir together the olive oil, garlic and herbs. Sprinkle the pie with this mixture while it is still hot, spreading the mixture gently with the back of a spoon. Serve the pie hot or at room temperature.

PIE DOUGH

Start to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes (15 minutes active) Make 1 batch pie dough 1∏ cups (6.4 ounces) all-purpose flour 1 ⁄4 teaspoon table salt 10 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into ∏-inch cubes 2 to 4 tablespoons ice water In a large bowl, stir together the flour and the salt. Add the butter and, working quickly, use your fingertips or a pastry blender to mix the dough until most of mixture resembles coarse meal, with the rest in small (roughly pea-size) lumps.

Drizzle 2 tablespoons of ice water evenly over the mixture and use a fork to gently stir until incorporated.

Gently squeeze a small handful of the dough. It should hold together without crumbling apart.

If it doesn’t, add more ice water, ∏ tablespoon at a time, stirring 2 or 3 times after each addition until it comes together. Be careful: If you overwork the mixture or add too much water the pastry will be tough.

Turn the dough out onto a work surface. With the heel of your hand, smear in a forward motion on the work surface to help distribute the fat. Gather the smeared dough together and form it, rotating it on the work surface, into a disk. Wrap the disk in plastic, then chill until firm, at least 1 hour.

Minooka Jr. High honors girls cross country team

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – For the last few years, the Minooka High School girls cross country program has been steadily improving to one of the top programs around.

Judging by what the Minooka Junior High team did this season, that trend should continue.

Minooka’s team finished third at the IESA Class 3A state meet at Illinois State University’s Maxwell Park over the weekend, and they were honored Tuesday at Minooka Junior High’s fall sports awards night.

The evening started with all of the athletes and parents from all fall sports in the gymnasium, where the girls cross country team was recognized in front of everyone, and then the many athletes with 4.0 grade-point averages were also honored and given a certificate.

When the sports divided up into separate groups to have their own honors, the cross country teams stayed in the gym.

First, the fifth and sixthgrade girls team was announced and given their honors, with coach Thomas Neisler pointing out that the team won every invitational it competed in this fall, by an average of 40 points. Next, it was the boys’ turn, as members

of all four grades were introduced and honored by coach Mike Lanahan. He noted that this year’s team was the fastest he has ever coached, and eighth-graders Jacob Bieker (Most Improved) and Hector Ramos (Most Valuable) were honored as well.

Finally, it was time for the seventh and eighth-grade girls team to be honored for their third-place state finish, the best in school history since 1981, when the Indians also finished third.

Neisler pointed out that he was unable to attend the state race Saturday, as his wife had given birth to twin boys at 4 a.m. Friday morning. Lanahan and the girls’ assistant coach, Renae Batsch-Haaker, were in charge of the team during the state meet.

“This is a very good group of girls,” Neisler said. “They are hard workers. I knew I could also trust the other coaches.

Coaches Batsch-Haaker and Lanahan obviously did a great job down there.”

Neisler is in his fifth year as cross-country coach at Minooka, and many of his former runners are now part of the high school team.

This year’s team at state consisted of Peighton McManus, Alyssa Hrusosky, Olivia Kics, Taryn Sandei, Morgan Tomaselli, Gabby Kics, Abby Rivara, Maddie Olenick, Nina Shanahan and Kaylee Ratcliff.

Olenick was the top finisher

at the state meet, taking 21st place overall and earning allstate honors. She also won the Most Valuable award at the banquet. Most Improved went to Sandei, who ran as a fifth-grader, took two years off and came back this year as an eighth-grader to be an integral part of the team.

Afterward, all the members of the team crowded around Neisler and hugged him before posing for photos with the state plaque.

“The thing I will remember most about this team is that they get along well,” Neisler said. “Not only when they are at practice and meets, but they hang out with each other outside of school. They are happy being with each other, and that’s not something you see real often, especially with a bunch of teenage girls.

“But, even though they are all friends, they are still very competitive with each other without causing friction in their friendships. That has been very nice to see. It’s a group we will miss, and we look forward to seeing what they can do once they get into high school.”

Defenseman Keith undergoes meniscus surgery, out 4 to 6 weeks

By BRIAN SANDALOW For the Chicago Sun-Times CHICAGO – The absence of some players looms larger than others.

Duncan Keith’s absence looms among the largest.

On Tuesday, the Hawks announced Keith underwent surgery to repair a meniscal tear in his right knee and isn’t expected to return to hockey activities for four to six weeks.

Coach Joel Quenneville said there wasn’t a specific incident that led to the injury, but it had been bothering Keith.

Now the Hawks – already thin along the blue line – will have to find a way to stay afloat in a competitive Central Division without their top defenseman. Keith ignites the offense,

is strong in his own end, plays a ton of minutes, provides leadership and can be trusted in all situations all over the ice.

“I don’t think we want to change too much in our approach going in and preparing for a game,” Quenneville said. “Guys are going to know they’re going to get more responsibilities. But in our team game, we’ll try to emphasize the importance of playing the right way and taking care of business.”

Doing that without Keith won’t be easy.

It will be especially difficult because of the state of the blue line, which includes youngsters Trevor van Riemsdyk and Viktor Svedberg and import Trevor Daley. David Rundblad, who hasn’t played since Oct. 7,

should get back into the lineup.

And Michal Rozsival could be ready to play when he’s eligible to return from long-term injured reserve Oct. 30.

“There’s not one area of the rink that Duncs doesn’t cover,” center Jonathan Toews said. “It is a collective effort, and we all need to try to step up for everything that he brings to our team on a daily basis.”

Although the Hawks’ blue line is far from settled beyond Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson, they do have forwards who aren’t allergic to playing in their own end. That responsibility will become even more important.

As will having the puck and controlling play as much as possible.

“I think offensively, we want

to make sure that we’re playing as much offense as we can,” Quenneville said, “because we don’t have to check and make them worry about their own end.”

The Hawks have options pertaining to their roster. They could put Keith on long-term injured reserve, allowing them to save his $5.54 million cap hit temporarily and sign a free agent. Quenneville intimated the Hawks wouldn’t call up someone from Rockford.

The loss of the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner doesn’t have the Hawks in a panic. In fact, they’re trying to see the positives, such as the chance Keith’s absence will give other players and how much time is left in the season.

“Let’s put it this way,” Mar-

ian Hossa said, “we know it’s a big loss to lose a player for a few weeks. On the other hand, the good thing is it’s only the beginning of the season, so we know he’s going to have lots of time to get into it again after the surgery.”

This isn’t the first time the Hawks have had to play without a star. Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp missed significant time last year, and the Hawks ended up OK. That isn’t lost on the team.

“I think one of the qualities we value as a team is our resiliency,” Toews said. “People can point out flaws or points where we look vulnerable and we find ways to overcome it in some other area or balance ourselves out in some way. We’ll learn to do that in this situation.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: MINOOKA 27-25, PLAINFIELD CENTRAL 25-22

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The Minooka girls volleyball team needed to beat Plainfield Central on Tuesday to get back in the Southwest Prairie Conference title race.

Not only did the Indians accomplish that feat, they beat SPC rival Central 27-25, 25-22 in front of a huge senior night crowd.

Thursday’s games will determine if the SPC crown goes to Plainfield Central or Central and Minooka, but regardless of the outcome, the Indians have many reasons to be happy.

“It feels really good and it’s definitely reassuring that we have a chance at sharing the conference title with Central,” senior outside Ginger Perinar said. “I think that they played really well and that we were competitive the entire time.

Obviously, the crowd made it that much more special. I think that it was a really good way for us seniors to have our last game to remember.

“No matter how it would’ve ended, we would’ve been satisfied and ready for playoffs.”

The Indians dominated despite finding out middle Rocky Perinar couldn’t play only two hours before the match.

Minooka was shaky to start off with the strange lineup, but it adapted quickly and played strong across the board.

Sophomore Taylor Baranski led the defense with six digs, while senior right side Sydney Arlis had four digs and senior libero Maddie Alessio tallied three.

Because the back row passed in system consistently toward the end of the match and never gave up on a ball defensively, the strong offense Minooka boasts was able to shine.

With the Indians trailing 13-10 in Game 1, Ginger Perinar wisely tipped the ball over the block for a shouldbe kill. Central setter Ashley Shook (18 assists, two aces) dove and sent the ball over.

Setter Brooklyn Bach mann gave the ball back to Perinar, who bounced the ball off Claire Hotchkin’s shoulder. The ball went back over. Senior middle Emily Hise then ran a slide and bounced the ball cross court.

Simply put, if you give Minooka (20-9, 11-2) enough chances to slam the ball in your face, it will.

Ginger Perinar led with 11 kills, while sophomore outside Allie Papesh had seven and Hise had four.

Three other players – Holly Bonde (two), Baranski (two), Kamryn Johnson (one) – registered at least one kill.

That hot offense is only possible with the consistent first contact, however.

After playing well against the Oswego teams and at its own tournament, Minooka coach Carrie Prosek is confident the team will carry the strong passing and defense into postseason.

It also helps to know that when needed, she has a bench that is fully capable of helping out the team.

“Our ball control has been much better, and since the beginning of the year it

has been our focus,” Prosek said. “We beat Joliet West this weekend and it was all ball control. What was nice tonight was that we didn’t have Rocky, but I’ve said all season that we have players that can come in and step up.

We’re progressing just the way I wanted them to this season.”

The long-term goal was doing well come postseason and doing well in conference.

And it all comes down to the two teams that stepped on Minooka’s court Tuesday.

For the Indians to share the SPC title with Central, they will have to beat Romeoville and the Wildcats would have to lose to Plainfield East on Thursday.

The two also most likely will face off in the regional championship match and are even at one win a piece in the season series.

Even though Plainfield Central might intimidate some players, the matchup excites Minooka.

“Last time, it was us that was up, 17-9, and they came back and beat us,” Prosek said. “It can go either way if we meet up with them in postseason which I’m assuming we will.”

“If it ended up being both of us, it would be an awesome game just to play in,” Perinar said. “I love to play this team.

Some teams get nervous, but I think that it’s so much fun and it’s better than playing a less successful team. You know it could be so much pressure, but when you play to have fun, it’s so much more enjoyable.”

Morris didn’t even take three games, as the Redskins beat Yorkville, 25-17, 25-15.

“It was senior night for them and the girls came in with a great momentum,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “They wanted to defend

themselves from when we lost to them at home. It was a great match that we had control over for the entire way.”

Kaylin Korte had 21 kills, nine digs and one block for Morris (13-16-2, 3-4). Janelle Brehm had six kills, two digs, three aces and four blocks. Addison

Polite had 12 assists, three digs and an ace, while Ashley Hood had 12 assists, one dig and an ace, and Veronica Johnson had two kills and two blocks.

Morris won the sophomore match, 16-25, 28-26, 25-23, while the freshman A team lost, 19-25, 25-15, 25-12, and the B team lost,

DBs coach Donatell wants better play on ball

By NATE ATKINS natkins@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – How does a secondary allow the sixth-fewest passing yards in the league yet also rank behind all but one team in opposing quarterback rating?

That might be the top question facing Bears defensive backs coach Ed Donatell as he heads into the bye week.

The easy deduction would be that teams don’t throw on the Bears, and they do face the fourth-fewest passing attempts a game.

But the more performance-related figure is that the Bears have only three interceptions this season, tied for 25th in the league, and none from a cornerback through six games.

“That’s awesome, because we can only get better,” he said to a room full of laughter.

When Donatell met with the media Tuesday for the first

time since training camp, he kept pointing to one area of improvement that’s no secret to observers: The Bears need to make better plays on the ball.

Sunday brought another example that resulted in a touchdown when Detroit’s Tim Wright caught a touchdown in the left corner of the end zone around Kyle Fuller, who had tight coverage but had his back turned.

“We’re teaching them to shield and keep moving in that situation. If you look back, they’re just going to move away from you,” said Donatell, who has spent the past five years as defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s defensive backs coach. “... All DBs, the rules are made to where they want you to play the football. We’re always preaching that to get your head around. Sometimes they’re just gonna play the pocket. But that’s what our goal is.”

Rookie safeties continue to grow

Donatell knows he’s in a unique situation, starting two rookie safeties by Week 5. Harold Jones-Quartey went undrafted and didn’t sign with the team until Sept. 6, and fifth-round pick Adrian Amos has played only six full games as a safety in his life.

Donatell credited the leadership of the injured Antrel Rolle and other veteran secondary players in bringing along Jones-Quartey, who had last played regular-season football at the University of

Findlay before he took over for Rolle three weeks ago. Amos’ climb has been more gradual.

“Amos, he’s just been so steady and mature beyond his years, and I mean 24/7 in everything he does, in every meeting. Very calm,” Donatell said. “You can see that he was listening to Antrel because when Antrel went out, there wasn’t as much drop-off in communication as there might be.”

Ball has had to get on the field after injuring his groin after a big performance against the Seahawks in Week 3. Coach John Fox said Monday that Ball’s lack of snaps has not been related to his health, but Donatell emphasized the cornerback position is a fluid rotation with no roles set in stone.

He does see one player who has a chance to get the group’s first interception, a guy known for big interceptions in the Fluid cornerback situation playoffs: Tracy Porter.

“He’s going to get a pick or Donatell didn’t get very specific with his cornerbacks, two,” Donatell said. “They’re including the struggles Alan coming.”

Self-critical Long eager to improve

Long, who apologized to Bears fans, had two holding penalties and detailed a missed block that led to Matt Forte being tackled behind the line when the Bears had a first-and-goal on their opening drive.

“I blocked too much on the end. Marty and I have the end and the linebacker, and I get too invested in the defensive end,” he said. “The linebacker sees a free run through.”

The linebacker, Josh Bynes, made the play, and Long said he made Bynes “look like an AllStar.”

Now Long can self-scout, along with the rest of the offense, and try to get the run game back on track. The Bears have averaged 93.5 rushing yards a game in the past four games at a rate of only 3.3 yards a carry.

“Very close, very close. I know that’s something that fans

want to see. I know that’s something we want to see, you guys want to see it,” Long said when asked how close the run game is to returning to form. “It falls on us. It falls squarely on our shoulders as offensive linemen.

Examples like the one I gave you earlier where I could have been better. I’m sure if you get any number of the guys from the O-line, they’ll tell you the same thing. Maybe they had a play here or there or play there.”

Six games into playing right tackle, Long is the first to admit he has much to improve upon, and the bye week will give him and the rest of the offense that opportunity.

“We need to get better at football,” he said. “There’s nobody that we’re preparing for necessarily. But we can self scout and we can figure out where we’re struggling in terms of technique and assignment. We can really pound on those things.

“We took an opportunity today in individual as an offensive line to do some thing that maybe we need some shoring up on. I think having those reps is extremely valuable.”

Here, this works better than West could have hoped, because East ruffs with his spade queen. This effects an uppercut that gives the defenders two trump tricks.

Anesthesia based on type of procedure and state of health Dear Dr. K: I have a minor surgical procedure coming up. Will I have any say in the type of anesthesia the doctor uses?

Dear Reader: For some surgical procedures, more than one type of anesthesia may be appropriate. The doctor who will administer the anesthesia (the anesthesiologist) will talk to you about the options.

I spoke to Dr. Kristin Schreiber, an anesthesiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She explained anesthesia has four goals. The first is to make sure you have no pain. The second is to make you drowsy or unconscious. The third is to keep your body still during the procedure – you don’t want your surgeon to have

And finally, the fourth is to prevent bad memories of the procedure.

There are four basic kinds of anesthesia. The type used depends on the procedure you’re having and your state of health. Sometimes, but not always, the doctor will be able to take your preferences into account.

• Local anesthetics are injected near the area to be treated, to numb it. Their effects are limited to a fairly small area. They are used when you’re having dental

work done, or if you require stitches. When a local anesthetic is first injected, you feel a very brief sting. Then the area becomes numb, and more local anesthetic can be injected. Although you won’t feel pain from dental work or stitches with a local anesthetic, you might feel pressure.

• In regional anesthesia, local anesthetics are injected near clusters of nerves. By numbing the nerves, the doctor is numbing all parts of the body to which those nerves travel.

That is a larger area than local anesthetics injected under the skin can affect. Regional anesthesia can numb all of your arm or foot, for example.

• Neuraxial anesthesia includes epidurals and spinals.

First, the doctor numbs the

skin above your spine with a local anesthetic. Then a needle is passed through the numbed area, and anesthetics are injected near the spine.

The anesthetics are injected in a slightly different place for epidural anesthesia than for spinal anesthesia. Both types block sensation from the waist down. Epidurals commonly are given to ease the pain of labor and childbirth or the pain of a large abdominal incision. Spinals often are used for cesarean section and knee surgery.

With both regional and neuraxial anesthesia, you may be able to choose how conscious you’ll be during the procedure. With minimal sedation, you’ll be relaxed but aware of what’s going

on. Moderate sedation will allow you to drift in and out of consciousness, but still let you be easily aroused. With deep sedation, you are essentially fast asleep and unlikely to remember anything.

• General anesthesia works in the brain to render you completely unconscious and unable to sense pain. This effect is achieved through a combination of intravenous drugs. You also are often given a drug to relax your muscles. For certain types of major surgery – heart surgery, for example – general anesthesia is the only choice.
