ARTHUR WILLMINGTON Born: April 17, 1916; in Patterson, IL Died: Oct. 18, 2014; in Morris, IL Arthur “Art” Willmington, 98, of Morris, passed away Saturday morning, October 18, 2014, at Morris Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morris with Pastor Gerald Steele officiating.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time

of service at the church.

Born April 17, 1916, in Patterson, he was the son of Harry and Sophie(Day) Willmington. He graduated from White Hall High School with the class of 1934.

Art married Gwen Clark on May 31, 1942. In 1946 they moved to Morris.

He worked in employee relations at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet for 30 years, retiring on January 1, 1983.

He served on the Morris City Council for two terms in the 1970’s.

Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Becky (Joe) Simonelic of Phoenix, Arizona and Jill (Syd) Reeve of Morris; four grandchildren, Christopher, Kelly and Heidi Simonelic and Holly Simonelic-Strimaitis; four great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Strimaitis and

Connor and Victoria Gwen Simonelic.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Gwen on November 15, 2009; one brother, Ralph; one sister, Leona Dunlap.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and he taught Sunday School for many years to all ages, but mostly high school teenagers.

Memorials may be given to the Morris Hospital Patient Transportation or donor’s choice.

Elaine Claire Komnick, 90, of Morris, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, October 19, 2014, at the Morris JOHN MCLENNAN Hospital with her loving family at her bedside.

Born July 11, 1924, in Lemont, Illinois, John McLennan, 82, of Sheridan, Ilshe was the daughter of the late linois, passed away Monday, October Oscar and Anna (Stafford) Anderson. 20, 2014, at his home.

She married Wilbur Komnick on September 27, 1947. Wilbur preceded her in death on March 23, 1999.

Elaine was employed as a telephone operator in Chicago and also worked as a CNA at the Morris Lincoln Nursing Home.

She enjoyed playing Bingo and cards, solving large-print word search puzzles, and was an avid Cubs fan, but her first love was her family.

Elaine is survived by her sons, Donald (Cheryl) Komnick of Morris, Dale Komnick of Morris, Dennis Komnick of Morris, and David (Margaret) Komnick of Tullahoma, TN; grandchildren, Michael (Jacque) Komnick, Jason (Karen) Komnick, Tina Komnick, Dale (Carrie) Komnick Jr., Eric (Isabele) Komnick, Jennifer (Jay) Bjrok, Cody Komnick, Heidi (Scott) Coultrip, Brian (Katie, fianc e) Komnick, Wesley, Michael, and Kirsten Komnick; 17 great-grandchildren; one greatgreat-grandchild and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving is her daughter-in-law, Dianne Ponton (Richard Clapper) of Yorkville.

Preceded in death by her parents; one son, Daryl Komnick; one granddaughter, Kimberly; and one daughter-in-law, Connie; two brothers, Andrew Anderson and Bernie Anderson; and one sister, Lovisa “Lovie” Schoonveld.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2014, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris. A Celebration of Elaine’s Life will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at - Candy Matteson of Mazon the First Christian Church in Morris Breast Cancer Survivor with Pastors Greg Munyon and Scott Zorn officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in Elaine’s name to the family for a later disbursement.

“It was an ugly win, but we’ll take a win any way we can get it right now,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “It’s so nice to be on the other side this time. It got scary there toward the end, but our defense stepped up when it had to.

“And, Jake had some real tough runs. Sycamore has a real good defense, but Jake made the tough runs when he had to. And Griffin made some big throws when we needed them. That’s what we need out of our leaders.”

Walker’s 2-yard run in the first quarter gave Morris a 6-0 lead after the kick went off the goal post, but Sycamore took a 7-6 lead late in the same quarter on a 28-yard pass from Brett Bemis to Nick Niemann and a kick by Tyler Maveus.

Midway through the second quarter, after Walker’s 3rd-and-23 reception, Morris got another big play in the air.

Sobol’s pass was tipped by a Sycamore defender, but Chase Hansen grabbed it out of the air for a 20-yard gain to the 2, and Walker went over on the next play.

Illinois Big 12 East) forced a punt on Sycamore’s first drive of the second half and went almost exclusively on the ground down the field after taking over on their own 44. The only pass was a 12-yard completion from Sobol to Matt Feiden on 3rd-

and-7. Walker scored on a fiveyard run to give the Redskins an 18-7 lead.

Sycamore followed with its best drive of the night, scoring on a nine-yard pass from Bemis to Brett Weaver on the first play of the fourth quarter.

MORRIS – Two of the Morris football team’s four losses this season have been by a single point in overtime. One of the others was by a touchdown to Minooka, which is battling for a playoff berth in Class 8A. At Friday night’s homecoming game against Sycamore, the Redskins got involved in another edge-of-your-seat nail-biter, this time coming out on top and beating the Spartans, 18-15, Friday to improve to 4-4 and keep their playoff hopes alive. With 40 playoff points already, a win next week against winless LaSalle-Peru will give Morris a 5-4 record and, likely, a berth in the Class 5A playoffs after a 2-4 start.

“It’s nice to be on the winning side of a close game,” Morris captain and homecoming king Jake Walker said. “It’s been a pretty amazing week.

First, I got homecoming king, which was pretty cool since I didn’t think I would get it.

“But the big thing about this week is this game, and it really makes the week to get the win.”

Walker (66 rushing yards, 36 receiving yards) was one of the main reasons for the Redskins’ win, as he scored all three touchdowns. He had scoring runs of 2, 2 and 5 yards as well as an interception on defense and a key 30-yard pass reception on third-and-23 that kept Morris’ second scoring drive alive.

On that play, he started straight down the field, then cut toward the middle. He ran under Griffin Sobol’s pass, outfighting the Sycamore defender for the ball at the Spartans’ 40-yard line.

“That wasn’t really supposed to be a post route, but I read their safety and went inside of him,” he said. “Griffin made a great throw, and I went and got it.

“This was one of our best all-around team games of the year. It’s not about individuals with us. We win as a team.”

Indeed, they did, as the defense – spearheaded by linebackers Robbie Meucci, Matt Feiden, Keagan Sobol and

Hooker ran in the conversion and the lead was cut to 18-15.

Sobol was intercepted on Morris’ ensuing drive, but the defense held and made Sycamore punt. The Redskins punted back, giving the Spartans the ball at their own 38 with 3:26 to play. Runs of five yards

by Bemis, 17 by Hooker and 11 by Colan Treml moved the ball to the Morris 29 and Hooker ran three times for 12 more yards and another first down at the Redskin 17. Bemis then threw incomplete, was sacked for a five-yard loss and had a pass batted down by Ryan Niewinski, forcing a 39-yard field goal attempt with 46 seconds left that came up short.

“That’s two wins in a row against two good teams [Kaneland and Sycamore],” Thorson said. “The last thing I told the kids in our huddle after the game was that we can’t let up. We still have a game next week, and we can’t take it easy now. These wins don’t mean anything if we can’t win next week.”

On the heels of its most complete showing of the year in Atlanta, the Bears allowed Ryan Tannehill (325 total yards, 123.6 passer rating) to ignite for one of his best days as a pro in a 27-14 Dolphins victory that moved the Bears to 0-3 in Soldier Field for the first time since 2004.

Many of the Bears’ surprising defensive stars a week ago came crashing down to earth. Making his second consecutive start, Khaseem Greene couldn’t match Charles Clay’s speed downfield in coverage on a 25-yard catch to step up Miami’s first score.

Darryl Sharpton, who replaced D.J. Williams in the nickel package and again called defensive plays, didn’t make receivers think twice when entering the middle of the field as he did in Atlanta. The Bears’ nickel cornerback for a second consecutive week, Demontre Hurst, was a step behind in coverage and one of many Bears guilty of poor tackling.

A trio of Bears turnovers helped Miami to an average starting field position at its own 38, but the Bears allowed 10 points off the sudden changes.

He helped Miami possess the ball for more than 37 minutes by distributing the ball to eight different receivers, not misfiring until his 15th and final attempt of the second half and, like most athletic quarterbacks

that play the Bears, flummoxing the Bears with the zone read.

After the Bears began the second half by cutting Miami’s deficit in half with a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive, Tannehill and the Dolphins faced a fourth-and-1 at the Bears’ 39. Tannehill sucked in Lamarr Houston with the fake to Miller, blowing by Shea McClellin, then Brock Vereen for a 30-yard scamper. The Dolphins would find the end zone two plays later and

never looked back.

“We can’t continue to be up and down,” safety Ryan Mundy said.

“That’s what this league is about – how consistent can you be week in and week out. That’s how you earn your reputation.”

Mills’ struggles continue: The Bears needed a strong bounce-back performance from Jordan Mills after his poor showing in Atlanta. Instead, Mills proved to be no match for Cameron Wake, who blew by the Bears right tackle for a strip sack of Jay Cutler in the third quarter, and forced Mills into a pair of penalties.

Special teams improvement: On a day with few positives, the Bears did get a blocked field goal from Houston, as well as their longest kickoff return of the season, a 50-yarder by Chris Williams. Pat O’Donnell was excellent, downing two of his three punts inside the 20 and posting a net average of 45.7.

Dangerous returner Jarvis Landry didn’t have many chances, but he did manage a 31-yard kickoff return.

Injury update: The Bears only suffered one injury, but it was to one of their key players. Top pick Kyle Fuller exited with a hip injury in the third quarter and didn’t return. He was replaced by Sherrick McManis, who was playing for the first time since suffering a quad injury in Week 2.

The pick, Cutler’s seventh of the season and fifth at Soldier Field, came on third-and-2 from Miami’s 37-yard line with 7:13 to go in the second quarter, with the Bears facing a 7-0 deficit.

Tight end Martellus Bennett ran his route toward the sideline, and cornerback Cortland Finnegan closed on Bennett from the outside, letting Santonio Holmes run free down the sideline.

Linebacker Jelani Jenkins had Bennett covered off the line, and Finnegan “squeezed” Bennett, as Cutler described it. The pass went over Bennett’s head into the arms of safety Reshad Jones, who returned it deep into Bears territory. The Dolphins went up, 14-0, three plays later and never looked back.

I think Marty saw the squeeze coming, I don’t even know if he saw it, to be honest with you,” Cutler said after the 27-14 loss.

“We’ll take a look at it on film.

“They did a good job on coverage, they really did. They mixed up, they took away a lot of the deep shots, took away a lot of the stuff 10 yards and beyond. Made it really difficult.”

When asked if he should have thrown it away, Cutler said, “No, that’s where I had to go,” and that

Bennett is a “go-to guy” against that coverage.

“I think Marty had an outside route, corner sunk inside,” Bears coach Marc Trestman said. “I think the tape will give me a better answer. That was the play design, for [Holmes] to clear to the outside and the corner came off and squeezed Marty inside.”

At first glance, and based on replays, Cutler could have had a touchdown, or at least a long gain, if he went to Holmes downfield. “I ran my route and turned around, the guy was intercepting the ball,” Holmes said.

Holmes, who ran a go route, said he didn’t see any Dolphin defensive back coming to defend him over the top. “I don’t know what happened,” he said. “I don’t know if he got hit, I just turned around and saw the guy intercepting the football, that’s all that happened.”

Trestman wouldn’t say if Cutler should have thrown it away or targeted the pass elsewhere.

“That’s always a difficult question when you don’t get to review it on tape, so I’ll just leave it at that,” he said.

STAFF REPORTS Two local tennis programs will be sending a set of sisters and three girls total to this weekend’s state tournament in Buffalo Grove.

Morris’ doubles team of Leah Lines and Monica Davy took second at the Plainfield East Sectional on Saturday, while Megan Davy was fourth in singles. It is the second straight year that all three have advanced to the state tourney.

At the Ottawa Sectional, Coal City’s Krissie Haddon and Katie McGinn finished fourth in doubles to advance to the state tournament, while Carli McGinn was fourth in singles.

BOYS GOLF McPherson finishes 97th: Morris’ Nick McPherson shot 91 on Saturday at Normal’s Weibring Golf Course to finish with a two-day total of 176 and finish in a tie for 97th at the Class 2A state tournament.

Morris’ Megan Davy advanced to the IHSA state tennis finals by taking fourth on Saturday at the Plainfield East Sectional.

NIB 12 Conference Meet: The Morris boys team finished sixth. The Redskins tied with LaSalle-Peru, but beat the Cavaliers on a sixth-man tiebreaker. Morris senior Jacob Wantland took 14th with a time of 16:17 to earn all-conference honors. He was followed by teammates Jacob Hesslau (33rd, 17:05), Zach Chapman (34th, 17:05), Austin Patterson (41st, 17:21), Al Alvarez (44th, 17:33), Tristan DeGrush (53rd, 17:47) and Vicente Gallegos (57th, 17:58).

“Sixth is our best finish in the Northern Illinois Big 12,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “While we ultimately want to be able to finish consistently in the upper half, it’s a darn tough conference, and we just don’t have the year-round training that those schools do.

We are happy for Jacob Wantland. After missing two years with hip surgeries, he stayed the course and worked hard enough to become an all-conference runner – no small feat in the Northern Illinois Big 12.

In the girls race, Morris finished sixth as a team as well. Freshman Mya Shannon finished 10th in 19:06 and was named all-conference. She was followed by Meghan Smith (22nd, 20:31), Sophie Tibbot (38th, 21:30), Katherine Gallick (49th, 22:25), Lily Tibbott (53rd, 22:52), Maria Blanco (59th, 23:25) and Bridget Gile (61st, 23:55).

“Again, our best Northern Illinois Big 12 finish ever,” Blumberg said. “Our girls ran hard, despite homecoming day distractions. We are extremely proud of Mya. I don’t think she realizes how big of a deal an all-conference certificate is.

Unlike other sports, you have one chance, one race, to show your talents. Have an off day, and someone else takes your place. She continues to drop time, and hopefully is gaining the confidence to know she can get down to state. Our girls

as a team have to think they can get to another sectional meet as a team. And we get the chance to compete on our home course. It should be fun.”

Morris hosts an IHSA Class 2A Regional on Saturday. The girls race at starts at 10 a.m. and the boys at 11 a.m.

Southwest Prairie Conference meet: The Minooka girls won the conference title, as Ashley Tutt took first place in a time of 17:19. Also earning all-conference honors for Minooka were Mackenzie Callahan (2nd, 17:26), Emily Shelton (5th, 17:54) and Moragn Crouch (6th, 18:21). Other Minooka runners were Baby Gall (16th, 19:01), Emily Ellis (24th, 19:46) and Caitlin Kurtz (25th, 19:47).

In the boys race, Minooka finished fourth as a team.

Gabe Ceballos was fourth overall in 15:21 and was named all-conference. He was followed by Michel Lomeli (16th, 15:45), Justin Tutt (23rd, 15:54), Jack Sullivan (27th, 16:11), Ben Ubert (35th, 16:29), Henry Bugajski (36th, 16:29) and Brendan McGrath (42nd, 16:50).

Minooka hosts an IHSA Class 3A Regional on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Channahon Community Park.

FOOTBALL Minooka 41, Oswego East 14: The Southwest Prairie win keeps the Indians in the playoff hunt. Midway through the second quarter, Minooka (4-4, 3-3) capped a 12-play drive with a 15-yard screen pass from John Carnagio to Nate Gunn.

After receiving the kickoff in third quarter, Gunn burst through the Wolves’ defense and sprinted for an 84-yard touchdown on the first play

from scrimmage. Gunn had 30 carries for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Carnagio connected with Quinton Durov for a 78-yard touchdown pass to make it, 20-0. Two possessions later, Minooka scored again when Victor Turpin scored on a 10-yard touchdown run.

Carnagio struck twice more, finding Peter Andreano for 62 yards and Turpin for 60 yards.

Carnagio finished 8 for 13 for 287 yards and four touchdowns.

Plano 45, Seneca 14: The Fighting Irish fell to 4-4 on the season and visit Coal City next week.

MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – When leaders at Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers were looking for someone to train physician office staff in making the transition to electronic medical records, they immediately thought of Patrick Dalton, patient service representative at Morris Hospital’s Braidwood Healthcare Center, and Laura Hernandez, medical assistant at the Channahon Healthcare Center.

Dalton for his high energy, outgoing and friendly manner, and Hernandez for her calm demeanor and exceptional critical thinking skills, according to a news release from the hospital.

The duo did such a fantastic job with their special assignment, they were recognized as Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers’ Fire Starters of the Month for September. Dalton is a resident of Rockdale, and Hernandez lives in Joliet.

“I knew Laura and Patrick had great abilities, but they definitely went above and beyond my expectations by sharing their expertise with an exceptional display of competence, patience and teamwork,” Sarah Riordan, director of Morris Hospital’s Healthcare Centers, said in the release.

Dalton had been working as a waiter for 10 years when he joined Morris Hospital as a patient service representative in August 2010. In this role, he greets, registers and schedules patients in the physician office setting.

“When someone is a server as long as I was, you get pretty good at reading people and serving people,” Dalton said.

“I’ve always been trying to please people and take care of them, so being a patient service representative comes easily. Plus, I love everybody I work with and everybody I’ve met at the hospital. I’m proud to say I work at Morris Hospital.”

Hernandez had been working as a retail manager when she decided to go back to school to complete a degree as a medical assistant. She completed her 200 hour externship at Morris Hospital’s Channahon Healthcare Center and ended up getting hired in March 2013.

“I always pictured myself helping people,” Hernandez said. “It truly is my passion.

The most rewarding part of my job comes at end of day when I look back at the schedule and all the patients we helped.

They might be scared when they arrive, but they leave with a sense that everything is going to be okay. I helped with that, and it feels good.”

OPINION Rauner’s views creating issues with conservatives I wasn’t hugely surprised when Local 150 of the International Union of Operating Engineers contributed $30,000 to the Illinois Libertarian Party’s candidate for governor Chad Grimm earlier this month.

After all, the union’s president, Jim Sweeney, was out in front of the push to beat Bruce Rauner during the Republican primary.

After a stormy meeting with Rauner, who is running on a pledge to allow local areas to opt-in to “right to work” laws, Sweeney demanded organized labor stop the candidate in his tracks. The law would give workers the right to not join the very unions which negotiated their pay, benefits and working conditions.

But as it turns out, that $30,000 was just a down payment. A lot more help from the union is apparently on the way. Sweeney told me last week his local also is planning a full direct mail and robocall program for the Libertarian Party candidate.

The Libertarian’s Grimm is getting around 5-8 percent of the vote so far, depending on the poll. He appears to be taking away slightly more votes from Rauner than he is from Gov. Pat Quinn. The object is to push Grimm’s numbers up by informing conservative Republican voters that he’s the only progun, pro-life candidate in the contest.

Sweeney explained last week 42 percent of his members pull Republican ballots during primaries, and many of those members are pro-gun, pro-life conservatives who want another option. But, obviously, the real object here is to defeat Rauner.

Sweeney said he met with Rauner twice since the

VIEWS Rich Miller primary in an attempt to find common ground, but Rauner refused both times to come off his “right to work” stance and wouldn’t commit to a funding source for a new public infrastructure program.

And Sweeney doesn’t appear to be in the mood for any further discussions, telling me even if Rauner publicly changed his position on “right to work,” as he has with the minimum wage increase issue and taxes, the union leader wouldn’t believe him.

A huge factor in Quinn’s win four years ago was independent candidate Scott Lee Cohen’s millions of dollars worth of TV ads. He ended up splitting the anti-Quinn vote with Bill Brady, The hope here is that Grimm can manage a repeat performance.

The universe Sweeney’s aiming at is probably pretty small. Partisanship is strong on both ends of the spectrum, and convincing people to “throw away” their vote on a third party candidate won’t be easy, to say the least.

But for those who sincerely believe abortion is murder and who refuse to support any candidate who disagrees with them, it could be a powerful message.

The same goes for the “true believers” who own guns.

And in a close race – and this race is close – every vote will count.

Born: Jan. 11, 1941 Died: Oct. 18, 2014 Patrick Anthony Current, 73, of Morris, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2014. Born January 11, 1941, in Effingham, Illinois, he was the son of the late David and Ann (Phalen) Current.

He was raised and educated in Flora, Illinois. Patrick enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Klondike AR22.

He married Phyllis Toombs on August 17, 1968.

Patrick worked as an electrician his entire life and retired from Local Union 176. He enjoyed car shows, Cruise Night, and especially his 1962 Chevy Impala.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Tracy (Rob) Mingo, Kellee (Edgar) Dominguez, William (Lynette) Peel, and Alex Current; grandchildren, Patrick and Meghan Rusniak, Hayley Mingo, Alton Peel, Kaitlyn and Eric Exline, Sandy Hartmann, and Arwen Maule.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Michael Current and Jack Current; sister, Esther DesPres; and cousin, Maryanne Sylvester.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church located at 516 E. Jackson Street in Morris. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Father Edward J. Howe, CR as Presider. Burial will be in Sample Cemetery with full military honors by the Morris

Color Guard.

She was a dedicated housewife and mother, as well as working various jobs throughout her life. Edie was a voracious reader, especially fond of English Mysteries. Mrs. Johnson was born March 28, 1952, in Kankakee, the daughter of Cecil and Marjorie (Baker) Robertson.

She had been employed at the R- Place Restaurant and the former Townhouse Restaurant, both of Morris. She attended Morris grade schools and received her GED from Morris High School.

Cecilia loved her grandkids, cats, Word Search books and was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her step mother, Beverly Robertson, Minonk; two daughters, Georgy (Keith Smith) Misener, rural Streator and Kathy (John) Roundtree, Morris; five grandchildren, Jacob, Dalton and Anna Misener, Mazon, Cody and Briar Russell, Morris; one sister, Vikki (Keith) Duckett, N. Carolina; one step sister, Jeannie (Laurel) Robertson, California; one step brother, Rick (Pam) Robertson, Washington IL; nieces, Stormy Rhodes, Holly Rhodes and Shelly (Craig) Holtzman; and one great niece, Hailey Spencer; several aunts and uncles also survive in the Streator area.

Alfred North Whitehead, an English mathematician and philosopher who died in 1947, said, “It requires a very unusual mind to make an analysis of the obvious.”

If that is true, bridge players need unusual minds because sometimes the obvious is wrong and the unobvious is correct. And deals in which that is true are among the hardest to get right.

In this example, South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest heart six. What should declarer do after taking East’s 10 with his jack?

The auction is straightforward.

Remember, responder does not show his five-card minor with game-going values and no singleton. It is so unlikely that five of the minor will make and three no-trump fail.

South starts with eight top tricks: three spades, one heart (the first trick), three diamonds and one club. It looks so obvious to bash out those top diamonds. Surely the jack will drop.

And if it doesn’t, perhaps West has jack-fourth and can be given a trick, leaving the heart king safe from attack.

Finally, if East has jack-fourth of diamonds, then maybe the club finesse will work. All very easy -- but the contract fails here if East has the diamond jack. East will gain the lead in one of the minors and return his last heart.

Instead, declarer should be willing to guarantee four diamond tricks while making sure that East never gains the lead.

At trick two, South should play a diamond to dummy’s ace, then he should lead a diamond to his 10. If the finesse loses, the contract is safe. If the finesse wins and West follows suit both times, declarer will rake in at least one overtrick.

Hyperparathyrodism should be monitored Dear Doctor K: A recent blood test showed that the calcium level in my blood is high. My levels of something called “PTH” are also high. Now my doctor has scheduled a parathyroid scan. Why? What does calcium have to do with the parathyroid?

Dear Reader: You have four parathyroid glands.

These pea-sized glands sit on your thyroid gland, in the lower part of your neck. (I’ve put an illustration of the parathyroid glands on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

A hormone is a chemical made in one organ that enters the blood, travels throughout the body and affects how different parts of the body work.

The parathyroid glands produce the parathyroid hormone (PTH).

The job of the parathyroid glands is to adjust their production of PTH to keep calcium levels in your blood within a normal range. If the calcium level in your blood starts to drop, the parathyroid glands make more PTH. If calcium levels rise, the glands make less hormone.

How does PTH influence calcium levels? In three different ways. Lots of calcium is stored in your bones. PTH causes the bones to release calcium into the blood. PTH also stimulates the intestines to absorb more calcium from food. Finally, PTH signals the kidneys to withhold calcium from the urine.

Hyperparathyroidism (hi-per-par-a-THIGH-roydizm) occurs when one (or more) of the parathyroid glands becomes overactive and makes more PTH than it should. Excess hormone is released into the bloodstream. The result is abnormally high levels of calcium and PTH in the blood.

If your hyperparathyroidism is mild, you might not need treatment. But

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff you should have regular blood tests to measure your blood calcium level and make sure it’s not going higher. You will also need periodic bone density tests because PTH causes calcium to leak out of bones, which causes them to thin.

More severe hyperparathyroidism can cause bone pain and thin, brittle bones that are more easily fractured. Elevated levels of PTH and calcium can also trigger the formation of kidney stones and cause kidney damage, dehydration and confusion.

The reason your doctor has ordered an imaging scan is to check for an enlarged parathyroid gland or a parathyroid tumor.

Parathyroid cancer is extremely rare. A doctor may never see a single case despite practicing medicine for decades. I never have.

If your condition is severe enough, you may need surgery to remove the affected parathyroid gland(s). If it’s less severe, your doctor may prescribe medication. Drugs used to treat hyperparathyroidism include hormone replacement therapy and bisphosphonates, both of which help bones retain calcium. Another type of drug mimics calcium in the body, in order to trick the parathyroid gland into releasing less PTH. Fortunately, many people with hyperparathyroidism have a mild condition that never becomes serious enough to require treatment. But it does require regular repeat testing to be sure it’s not getting worse.

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With no strategy, little practice and a lot of energy, teachers from Morris Elementary School District 54 donned uniforms and took on some of the best basketball players in the country Monday night.

“Anytime you can make a fool out of yourself, you’ve got to do it,” said Shabonna School teacher Aaron Guenther before the big game.

Guenther joined about 15 other teachers and staff from District 54 in playing the Harlem Wizards basketball team Monday. The Wizards treated a packed Morris Community High School gymnasium to the basketball tricks and comedic stunts that have made the team famous.

The Wizards team is comprised of professional-level players who specialize in performing trick shots and entertaining the crowds.

Within the first two minutes, the Wizards were ahead by 10 points, showing off their impressive dunks, teamwork and athleticism as they quickly took the lead.

But Monday’s game was not about competition. As Wizards player Dwayne Simpson said in the pre-game announcements, Monday’s event was really “one big party.”

Between the slam dunks, three pointers and half-court shots, the Wizards often paused to run into the crowd, dance on the court and and engage kids from the crowd, many of whom were allowed to wear jerseys and practice with the Wizards before tip-off.

“The kids just love it. They absolutely love it,” said Jill Mills, Treasurer of District 54

Parent Teacher Organization which organizes the event.

This marked the second year the Wizards traveled to Morris. Last year, District 54 PTO raised several thousand dollars through the event.

Proceeds from ticket sales, PTO t-shirt sales and the 50-50 raffle went back tot the District 54 PTO. Former PTO president Angie Nondorf said she got the idea for the fundraiser after attend-

ing a convention.

“We thought we’d take a risk and try something completely different, and it has worked out great,” Nondorf said.

Before the main event Monday evening, the Wizards toured District 54 schools Monday morning.

The District 54 teachers volunteered for the event to help support the PTO. “They volunteered their

evenings to come out here and raise some money. These guys are the real heroes,” Simpson said.

The crowded gym was filled with students, many of whom came to see their teachers take on the Wizards.

Shabonna student Emily Chronister said she had several teachers playing.

“The best part is all the comedy stuff,” Chronister said.

“It’s fun watching them play.”

days. Food supplies were low, said Kowalski; even the horses were undernourished.

The Union brought out their heavy artillery and shot cannon after cannon into Confederate lines.

But it was the strategy of Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest that won the Confederates the battle of Brice’s Crossroads.

Confederate infantrymen fell back in what looked to be

a retreat, allowing Union forces to advance. But the Confederates were pulling them into a trap.

“They suffered great casualties,” Kowalski said. “They lost poorly.”

Union soldiers retreated, running off to six different counties in the area.

The Confederates won that day, but the Civil War should never have been fought, Kowalski said.

“They were Americans on both sides. They should have talked it out,” he said.

“It takes a long time to heal the wounds that took place between 1861 and 1865.”

Re-enactments such as Brice’s Crossroads on Saturday and the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, on Sunday – a Union victory – are important lessons in history that should be heeded by today’s politicians, Kowalski said.

CHANNAHON – Dollinger Family Farm was transformed into a battleground this weekend when it hosted the 19th Civil War Days re-enactment.

The farm grounds in Channahon were filled with tents housing Confederate and Union soldiers.

Spectators witnessed lifelike drills on the battlefield, from infantry to cavalry to artillery. President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln gathered children near the stage for a short program. The great generals of the time held a public discussion of their battlefield blunders and then a showand-tell.

Before the Saturday afternoon battle commenced up the hill at the farm, Union infantrymen prepared for what they knew would be a long march to the battlefield and a tough battle. They packed up their ammunition pouches and filled their knapsacks with food and gear.

“In this scenario we are on a campaign and marching into battle,” said Private Samuel Marks of the 104 Illinois Infantry. “We understand the enemy is somewhere on the front and we are going to engage with them.”

Union Battalion Bugler Greg Bochniak played his company’s ditty on his horn to assemble the troops.

“That tells the soldiers it’s first call,” he said.

Up on the battlefield, Confederate infantrymen prepared their strategy. They were ready to fight to maintain control of Brice’s Crossroads in Lee County, Mississippi.

The battle of Brice’s Crossroads took place June 10, 1864, said Jerry Kowalski, also known as Major General George Henry Thomas, who emceed the event Saturday.

6 First Presbyterian Church to host Trunk or Treat event

By NICK SAMUEL nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Halloween decorated vehicles, trick-or-treating and the giving away of special prizes are just a few of the activities lined up Oct. 30 for the First Presbyterian Church’s first Trunk or Treat event.

Treats will be handed out from the decorated cars at the First Presbyterian Church parking lot, 200 E. Jackson St., Morris.

Families can look forward to prizes such as “most bootiful family,” “most spooktacular,” “most spirit,” “eeriest lighting” and “most spellbinding.”

“It’s the first year, so it takes a while to build a tradition,” said Roy Backus, reverend for First Presbyterian Church. “It helps to encourage downtown participation too.

I figured it was a win-win for everybody.”

Jeff Abels, publicity coordinator for the event, said several people are signed up to decorate their vehicles and pass out candy. He added the church hopes for a great turnout from the community.

“We want people to see how much we care for the community and see there’s more things to the church,” Abels said.

Backus first started the Trunk or Treat event 10 years ago at Waltham Presbyterian Church in LaSalle County.

“Our church here is so spread out over Morris and Grundy County. It’s the same [problem],” Backus said. “We don’t get to see our kids.”

Trunk or Treat, which will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 30, will be held in conjunction with the downtown Morris’ Trickor-Treat event. Children are invited downtown to Trick or Treat at the downtown businesses at the same time.

Jeri Baker, pastor for First Presbyterian Church, said the church feels it’s important to support downtown businesses and that the event will “let people know we’re here.”

Backus said First Presbyterian Church is a downtown church that will continue to be invested in the success of the downtown Morris community.

He added kids can look forward to lots of nice people giving out Halloween candy.

“We hope to have our parking lot well circled with families participating,” Backus said. “We want to meet the needs of the kids coming downtown, so we’ll do our part.”

KEVIN CALLAHAN A lifetime dedicated to keeping the citizens of Grundy County safe

Sheriff Kevin Callahan began his career with the Grundy County Sheriff’s office on July 1st, 1983 and worked as a patrol Deputy for 8 years before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Sheriff Callahan was assigned to the investigation division where he investigated over 500 felonies for the next 12 years, including the most heinous murder case in Grundy County history along with several other homicides. In 1993, he graduated from Northwestern University Police School Staff and Command and has completed over 1500 hours of specialized law enforcement training during his career with the Sheriff’s office. In December of 2004, Sheriff Callahan was appointed Chief Deputy where he oversaw the day to day law enforcement operations of the Sheriff’s office for the next 8 years, until he was appointed sheriff in 2013.

Sheriff Callahan was born and raised in Morris and attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and Morris Community High School graduating with the class of 1978. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Xavier University in Chicago, and it was at St. Xavier where Sheriff Callahan met his wife Colleen. They were married in 1985 and have lived in the home they built in Wauponsee township for 24 years. Colleen has taught at Nettle Creek School for 28 years.

“It was an easy decision for me to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office because I was born and raised in Grundy County. I know firsthand what a great community it is to grow up in and reside. I am proud that Colleen and I have dedicated our careers to serving the people and children of Grundy County.”

Sheriff Callahan serves as the coordinator of the Grundy County Crimestoppers program and has for the past 11 years. Sheriff Callahan is the chairman of the 911 executive board and a member of the ETSB board, the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad policy board, the Tri-County Auto Theft Unit board, the Tri-River Police Training Board, Grundy County PADS board, and the Breaking Away board.

Sheriff Callahan worked with the County Board to establish a Merit Commission to ensure that the most qualified candidates are hired for the positions at the Sheriff’s office. In addition, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Explorer program has been established. This program allows young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 to have the opportunity to experience every aspect of the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Callahan has also successfully negotiated two union contracts with MAP Local 372 and Teamsters Local 700. Both contracts were unanimously ratified by the union and the County Board. Sheriff Callahan finished fiscal year 2013 $250,000 under budget and reduced fiscal year 2014’s budget.

“I have dedicated the past 31 years of my life working in the Sheriff’s office in many different capacities. Another new change to voting this year will allow people a grace period registration, which is an extension to the deadline for registration that will allow people to register, or change their address, and fill out a ballot on the same day.

Phillips said people must bring two forms of identification to register, just as they do during regular registration, and then they will receive a grace period ballot. They will fill their ballot out and hand it to a staff member at the County Clerk’s office. Once their voter identification card comes back saying they can vote, the ballot will be filed.

While the grace period ballot has been out for several years, it didn’t allow people to vote up to, and on, Election Day.

“A lot of people are calling it same-day registration, but it takes two weeks to check before the vote counts,” Phillips said. “There really is no excuse to not cast a ballot.”

Poll books are kept and will show if a person has voted early to avoid duplication of votes on Election Day. The State Board of Elections “Early Voting in Illinois” pamphlet states that the law prohibits a person who voted during the early voting period from voting again on Election Day, even if they changed their mind.

MORRIS – Grundy County voters were at the polls Monday as early voting started at the Grundy County Courthouse.

“There has been a nonstop stream of voters,” Grundy County Clerk Lana Phillips said Monday afternoon. “It’s gaining in popularity. We’ve had 84 voters, and it’s just 1 p.m.”

Any registered voter may cast a ballot before Election Day without providing a reason for wanting to vote early, Phillips said.

Nadine Kingman of Morris came out to vote early because she believes it’s easier than waiting until Election Day. There are some new changes to early voting this year, Phillips said. Voters will no longer be required to show identification to vote early.

“It’s very convenient for voters to come in any day to vote,” Phillips said.

Morris resident Ruby Matteson voted Monday with her husband, Ken, and said there are a number of reasons she can think of to vote early.

“I might be sick on Election Day, or the weather may get bad,” she said. “This way I can come out and vote when I feel well and the weather is good.”

For Carol Phillips of Morris, her reasons for voting were numerous. In addition to being easier, she said she no longer has to pay attention to political ads.

Monday for a report of smoke after lights went out on the building’s first floor.

School administrators checked the breaker box and called the fire department.

“There was a fire in the electrical panel in the office on the first floor,” Morris Fire Chief Tracey Steffes said.

“We can’t do a whole lot until ComEd cuts the power to limit

damage.”

Steffes said students were sent home for the day Monday because the building can’t be occupied.

Firefighters pulled out insulation from the ceiling. The total amount of damage was unknown.

Premier Academy administration said they will remain closed until the school is deemed safe for students to return.

Morris firefighters were called out to Premier Academy on Aug. 28 for the smell of smoke in the same area of the building.

Muraida, hired this summer as the new band director, said he is excited by this season because it shows him where he can take the Marching Redskins over the next year. Now he has time to work with them toward the goals he has for them.

MORRIS – Competition has ended for the Morris Community High School Redskins marching band and color guard after competing in Sandwich over the weekend, where they took home some top honors.

Both the drumline and the color guard took first place in Class 1A, where they competed with seven other marching bands of their size. The band took third overall in the same competition.

“The progress they’ve had shows their hard work.

They’ve come to rehearsal ready to do it,” band director Jeff Muraida said. “They went from not placing at the beginning of the season to placing third out of eight bands.”

The marching band and color guard get one chance to impress up to six judges in areas of visual artistry, music, percussion and telling a story.

The Marching Redskins took a composer Richard Saucedo themed routine, where they drew off the first movement, which was “Fanfare for the Third Planet.”

The color guard has improved all season. In their first competition, they placed fifth, and in the second, they placed third, before clinching first at Sunday’s event.

Their entire competition season lasts two calendar weeks, with a competition each weekend for three weeks in a row. This is in addition to their

regular marching band and pep assembly duties.

“It was hard work that got them there,” color guard coach Laura Zomboracz said.

“They’ve come in early and stayed late to do it.”

Color guard member Alicia Boers said the competition adds stress, but it’s more fun than it is stressful.

“As a group, we collectively pushed ourselves upward,” color guard member Samantha Kesler said of her team.

The drumline also put in the extra work to take their performance to first place.

“I’ve been in the drumline for three years,” Nick Alonzo said. “This year is the best year by far.”

He said they saw how much work was needed to improve after their first competition at Providence High School.

By the second competition a week later, he said they had gotten better, but were still just “good.”

“To be told, we were the best drumline at Sandwich, that was the biggest thing,” Alonzo said. “It’s amazing to be told you are the best percussion of the day.”

Laurel Harper, color guard member, said it’s a group effort, regardless of how well they do individually. As a color guard team of 10 members, what matters is what happens when they join the band and work with 80 members.

“It’s so much different to work with the entire band.
