By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – As temperatures drop and winter draws closer, Karri Combs, an RN at the Grundy County Health Department, urges residents to get their annual flu shot.

The quadrivalent flu vaccine is effective against four strains of flu virus, two type A flus and two type B flus.

“Everyone over the age of 6 months old should get the vaccination,” Combs said.

“Infants under 6 months are too young to get it.”

She said one thing to consider when deciding to come to the health department to get the annual shot is whether a person is allergic to eggs.

If a person is allergic to eggs, he or she will be required to get their shot from an allergist or a physician who handles his or her egg allergy.

According to the CDC, flu shots contain a small amount of egg. Combs said the health department is unable to give flu shots to those with allergies because it requires a physician to monitor, and there is no physician on staff at the health department.

While there is no shortage of flu vaccine this year, the CDC reminds people that it takes two weeks for the vaccination to protect someone against the virus, so getting

Vaccines are only available to children who are eligible for the VFC (Vaccine For Children) Program. “Think about who you are coming in contact with; even if you are going to Wal-Mart, you could carry it to a child,” she said.

The Grundy County Health Department does not accept or bill traditional insurance companies, and Combs said those residents should contact their doctor for the vaccine.

Coal City family sets up haunted yard in following longtime tradition

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – As evening turns to night, flashing lights, loud screams and sinister sounds come from a yard at 195 N. Garfield St. in Coal City.

As the sounds of chainsaws fill the air, people can get a glimpse of the bloodshed around them and – if they are brave – can continue on the path to the unknown.

The occurrence has reappeared most Octobers for more than four decades, and it all started with a giant Frankenstein monster built with odd parts found by Richard Martis, who died in 2006.

“It all started 46 years ago with Frankenstein and a coffin and some gravestones,” said Mike Martis, youngest son of Richard. “In the late ’90s me and dad really started going nuts with it.”

Putting on a haunted house became a family tradition, and when oldest son Rick Martis returned from serving his country and moved to the same block, the custom became a duel of who could outdo the other.

In 2006, after they lost their father, Mike, Rick and middle son Steve Martis combined all the creepy to one location at their mother’s home.

“It’s fun, but it’s also a family tradition,” Mike Martis said.

Four years ago the brothers were busy and the haunt stopped, but this year they’ve found the time, and some extra energy, to turn their mother’s front yard into a maddening maze of horror again.

Unlike the newer haunts filled with actors, waiting to scare unsuspecting visitors, this one has only two actors.

The rest of the haunt is filled with speakers, animatronics that operate by electricity or air compressors, flashing lights and the seclusion of walls created from dried corn stalks.

Many of the animatronics were built by their dad, whom the boys said could create anything his imagination dreamed up.

“He made things out of what he could find. He’d make things from a junk pile,” Rick Martis said.

Morris City Council tables tattoo parlor vote

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris City Council voted, 4-2, Monday night to table the vote on a conditional permitted use permit that would allow or deny a tattoo and body piercing establishment in a B-3 zoning district at 1368 Liberty St. Aldermen Doug Hayse and Don Matteson voted against tabling the discussion. Aldermen Bill Martin and Duane Wolfe were absent.

Alderman Randy Larson motioned to table the vote until all eight council members are present.

Alderman Julian Houston seconded it. Alderman Jeff Wachowski pointed out that the property is in the fourth ward, which is Wolfe and Martin’s ward.

The matter would need a heightened two-thirds vote because of the several letters of objection submitted by nearby property owners, Morris City

Attorney Scott Belt said.

More than 15 people from the public spoke at the meeting either for or against the potential location, which is based off an application by Erik Sieczynski.

“It is and has been B-3 for many years, we’re not seeking rezoning, just a conditional permitted use,” Sieczynski’s attorney John Peacock said.

Sieczynski agreed with the Morris planning commission on a 10 p.m. closing time and parking improvements, Peacock said, and added that tattooing in America is a $1.65 billion per year industry and that about 45 million people in United States have a tattoo.

He also said it’s a highly regulated business and this location would provide four new jobs and additional tax dollars.

The building, a former doctor’s office, has been vacant for at least a year and a half, he said.

Because he’s represented Morris Hospital for over 20 years, Hanson said it is fortunate to have the location it has while always under pressure due to property values to keep it going.

Alderman Don Matteson said Morris Hospital has built over drainage ditches, kept records in its bottom floor and uses a heliport that shines light in peoples windows all night.

Resident Jacob Farmer, speaking in favor of the location, said many people, including the mayor, followed their dreams like Sieczynski is trying to do.

“Comments were made by a

representative of Morris Hospital about it being detrimental to the location,” Farmer said.

“I don’t know about you, but if I had a heart attack, I wouldn’t care where I go. When you leave with an ugly scar, (Sieczynski) can cover it up for you.”

Resident Joanne Gretencord said it’s sad that a man has to hire an attorney to come before the city multiple times.

She added that the Get Fit 24/7 Fitness Center nearby is open 24 hours a day and is not manned by an employee late at night, while the tattoo shop would close at 10 p.m.

In September, the planning commission voted, 3-2-1, to recommend the tattoo parlor for a conditional use permit to operate in the location.

Grundy plans weather mitigation meeting

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In 2013, Grundy County created a mitigation plan in accordance with FEMA requirements.

An annual meeting is scheduled for Oct. 27 at the Grundy County Emergency Operations Center to go over the plan, and look at changes needed and progress made since it was implemented.

“In 2013, the county identified threats and hazards in Grundy County,” Joe Schroeder, Grundy County Emergency Management director, said Friday. “Every year, we are required to meet so counties can make a change and see where we stand on the initial plans.”

Schroeder said there is no way to mitigate some of the hazards facing Grundy County, but for others, such as flooding, there are ways to lessen the damage.

He said the county has identified homes on Cemetery Road and Tabler Road that consistently flood. The county has discussed purchasing the property and removing the homes, lessening the cost of damage when these floods occur.

“We’ve applied for 13 properties, and we are looking at three currently,” Schroeder said.

Another area where flooding has caused issues is near South Wilmington because of the Mazon River. The project to fix this flooding issue has been in process for 30 years, and still doesn’t have approval from state agencies to get it fixed. Schroeder said in addition to county issues, officials also look at each municipality within the county and monitor what is being done to mitigate costly damage.

He said weather is the main danger in the county, whether it be flooding, tornadoes, straight-line winds or other occurrences such as lightning strikes.

Although the county can’t control the weather, officials can make plans to limit loss of life and property.

“Every community has an identified area,” Schroeder said. “We took the list and looked at what we could prevent and prioritized it that way.”

The Oct. 27 meeting will be facilitated by University of Illinois Extension Community Development Educator Carrie McKillip, who assisted the county in developing the plan.

The original plan received final FEMA approval in August 2013. FEMA requires that Hazard Mitigation Plans be reviewed annually, and updated every five years, in order for the participating jurisdictions to be able to access mitigation funding streams by FEMA. According to McKillip, it also is an opportunity to see how far the county has progressed since the development of the plan.

The Oct. 27 meeting is open to the public, and should have a representative from each jurisdiction covered in the plan.

Seeing the sun through new eyes

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With the help of a telescope with a built-in hydrogen filter, Pat Padden was able to stare at the sun without harming her eyes.

As the Shorewood resident knelt Monday on the ground at Joliet Junior College and peered into the lens of the telescope, Padden was able to view the sun’s chromosphere, which is one of the layers of the its atmosphere.

Instead of appearing brightly, it was instead almost dim and red in color.

“Pretty cool,” Padden said.

She was one of several visitors who came to JJC to enjoy a daytime viewing event that’s part of the college’s recognition of White House Astronomy Night. The national event, which started in 2009, encourages scientists and astronomers to host events at their schools or observatories.

“The discoveries are constantly in the news and people seem to be quite interested in them,” said Noella D’Cruz, an astronomy professor at JJC. “It’s good to have such events so people can look at these things in the sky.”

Besides the daytime viewing event, JJC also hosted a nighttime viewing session to recognize the viewing event.

JJC officials said in a news release visitors could use telescopes at the night event to see the Ring Nebula in the constellation of Lyra, Hercules Globular Cluster, the moon, double star Albireo in Cygnus, double star cluster in Perseus, Andromeda Galaxy and other objects.

Joliet Junior College astronomy professor had a hydrogen filter that allowed her to see prominences – or gas plumes – at the edge of the sun.

“Normally, you see these prominences only in photographs,” D’Cruz said.

Another telescope – called a Sunspotter – was made of wood and showed sunspots on a white surface.

Another telescope, a spectroscope, which allowed the viewer to see the sun in a variety of colors. D’Cruz said the telescope can be used to identify chemicals in the sun, as it is done in the field of spectroscopy.

“It’s a really very powerful technique,” she said.

A person looking through the spectroscope can use the lever to adjust the color of the sun they see and also can view dark lines that indicate chemicals in the sun such as hydrogen.

Pat Padden, along with her husband, Paul, found out about the astronomy event from D’Cruz, whose events they regularly attend.

“These are neat,” Paul Padden said about the telescopes.

“Obviously, I don’t have these at home. I enjoy looking at the sky and the sun.”

American Legion hosts We Care Mobile food pantry sponsored by New Community Christian Church in Morris SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – About 120 families took part Oct. 14 in We Care of Grundy County’s mobile food pantry that was hosted by the Gardner American Legion and sponsored by New Community Christian Church in Morris.

With 8,759 pounds of food delivered, each household received about 72 pounds of food, including 8 pounds of frozen meat and a variety of items such as canned diced tomatoes, sliced peaches, skillet dinners, three cheese casserole, Jimmy Dean Sandwiches, gourmet cheeses, rice pudding, carrots, lunch meat and Pillsbury cinnamon rolls.

“I am very humbled when I get to help We Care,” Deb Nelson, of New Community Church, said in a news release from We Care. “And I am so thankful that it is part of our community.”

We Care of Grundy County provides a mobile pantry each month that is available for anyone who resides in Grundy

County and is in need of food with no restrictions on household income.

The next mobile food pantry will be sponsored by Morris Hospital.

It is scheduled for Nov. 1 at the Early Childhood Education Center at 755 S. Carbon Hill Road, Coal City.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to bring a container to carry items.

Attendees are asked to provide proof of residency either with a valid driver’s license, state ID or utility bill with their current Grundy County address. For information, call 815-942-6389.

In Illinois, 97 organizations will receive donations in 2016.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Pat Woodell, a former actress and singer who played the brainy sister Bobbie Jo Bradley for two seasons in the 1960s sitcom “Petticoat Junction,” has died.

She was 71 and died of cancer on Sept. 29 at her home in Fallbrook, California, her widower, Vern McDade, said on Monday.

Woodell had guested on TV shows like “Cheyenne” and “77 Sunset Strip” before landing the role on “Petticoat Junction.”

The series about the Shady Rest Hotel in the farming town of Hooterville aired on CBS from 1963 to 1970.

Woodell was the brunette of a group of three sisters whose romantic lives were a key part of the series.

She left the series after two years because she wanted to return to singing, McDade said. She toured as part of comic Jack Benny’s show and acted in a handful of movies including “Twilight People” and “The Big Doll House.”

Woodell left acting in the mid 1970s.

“911: Call if you can, Text if you can’t” is the message being announced as the Will County 9-1-1 System introduces Text-to 9-1-1 Service, Caryn DeMarco, Public Education manager for Will County 9-1-1, said in a news release.

There are about 6,100 emergency call centers in the United States, and only about 360 of them provide the text-to-911 service, according to county officials.

“That puts Will County in the very enviable position of being one of the 5 percent of 911 centers in the United States that are providing this service to its citizens – those who live, work, and visit Will County,” Steve Figved, chief administrator of the Will County 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone Service, said in the news release.

“The Will County 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System Board is pleased to offer this service for those who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or speech impaired so they can communicate with emergency services in their main form of communication,” he added.

Morris junior Megan Davy will be making her third appearance at the state tournament this weekend.

“One of my goals this year was to get to state,” the senior left-hander said. “I am very excited to make it. I had a pretty tough draw in the sectional, so I know I earned my way there. Making state has been a goal since sophomore year, so I am excited to end my high school career at state.”

“Emma played the No. 3 seed and No. 5 seed at sectionals,” Shannon said. “We are

really happy that she was able to make it. Playing kind of in the shadow of someone as good as Meghan can be tough, so it’s nice to see Emma get her own chance to shine.”

See and Larsen also have had a strong season, entering the state tournament with a record of 19-10.

They won a pair of threeset matches on Saturday at the sectional to capture the

sectional title.

“It’s exciting,” See said about winning the sectional title. “This is our last hurrah as a doubles team, so it’s fun to go out on top and play together at state. We’ve been playing together for two years, so we are pretty much one unit.”

“It’s going to be fun,” she said. “We will go up Wednesday night after school... It will be fun for all of them to see competition from all over the state and see the level of tennis that’s played. Meghan and Emma, in a lot of their matches, weren’t really challenged that much, but I think they will be up to the challenge they will see up there.

And Autumn and Alyssa have already been challenged and met the challenge in the sectional, so I hope they can keep that going.

“We’re excited to be taking a group of four.”

Also competing at the state tournament will be Coal City singles player Carly McGinn and the Coaler doubles team of Katie Albrecht and Katie McGinn.

MORRIS – After winning the singles title at the Ottawa Sectional over the weekend, Morris junior Megan Davy qualified for the state tournament for the third straight year.

However, with her individual title, along with the thirdplace singles finish of senior teammate Emma Dingbaum and the first-place doubles finish of senior Autumn See and junior Alyssa Larsen, she got something she had never seen in her lifetime.

Morris won the sectional team title.

That hasn’t happened since 1997, according to the IHSA record book.

“They said it was the first time since 1997 that we won a sectional title,” Davy said. “I wasn’t even born then. I was born in 1999. I told my sister [Monica, who graduated in the spring] and she was surprised. She was like, ‘Sure, you wait until I am gone until we win a sectional.’

“It was pretty exciting to do that. This year, I hope the third time is the charm. I am looking forward to it and going into every match with a mindset of playing to win.”

Davy went 0-2 at the state meet as a freshman and was 1-2 last year. She enters this weekend’s play with a 23-6 record.

“We hope she can keep progressing,” said coach Samantha Shannon, who is in her first year as head coach.

“Freshman year, we were just happy for her to be there, then she got one win last year. We would like to keep improving, and she has this year, I think. Her freshman year, she played Whitney Lewis of Mendota and lost to her in three sets. Last year, she beat her in three sets and this year, she beat her 6-2, 6-3 in the sectional championship match.”

Dingbaum has worked through an ankle injury that still isn’t 100 percent and finished third at the sectional to earn a state berth.

She is 12-7 on the season heading into state play.

John Fox credits Lions’ offense while reflecting on Sunday’s loss

On Monday at Halas Hall, John Fox chose to credit the Lions more so than criticize his players.

“I remind everybody that that’s a pretty good offensive football team. They’ve got good players in all spots and got a little healthier on the offensive line with their right guard back,” Fox said when asked to assess the secondary.

The Bears had yet to allow a play go for more than 34 yards this season, but Stafford completed passes for 57, 43, 42, 39 and 34 yards in the game. The 57-yarder to Calvin Johnson set up the game-winning field goal.

“I saw a big guy go up and get the ball. He’s done it for a little bit,” Fox said of Johnson’s catch over Harold Jones-Quartey. “I think he broke some guy named Jerry

Wife needs a wake-up call on family’s sleeping patterns Dear Abby: My wife and I have been married 16 years.

We have three boys, ages 12, 6 and 2. My 6-year-old doesn’t sleep in his bed. He sleeps on the couch. My wife sleeps in a recliner in the den. The 2-year-old usually sleeps with her. Sometimes he sleeps in a crib in our room. I sleep by myself in a king-size bed.

There is no possibility for romance. The only time there can be is when my wife comes to bed. If this happens, I know something is going to take place, but I have no chance to initiate. Our sex life is totally up to her. Once a month or so is fine with her, but not for me.

I have told her how I feel about our “sleeping arrange-

working for you. Unless you want to live the rest of your life this way, you are complaining to the wrong woman.

Your wife is doing the children no favors by allowing these unorthodox sleeping arrangements. It’s time to lay your cards on the table with her. Tell her you need some straight answers about why she’s unwilling to share your bed. But if her answers are not forthcoming, marriage counseling might be necessary to improve your level of communication.

Dear Abby: I recently saw a link on Facebook to a fundraising site for the son of a childhood friend. (He is younger than 18.) When I clicked on it, I discovered he

is in rehab at a private-care facility that requires he stay for months. It is very expensive. I contributed as generously as I could, considering my limited finances, and received a thank-you for my support. I was happy to help.

Now, less than three weeks later, I’m seeing pictures of my friend on vacation. I don’t plan to say anything to this person, but I have learned a valuable lesson. From now on, I will donate my hardearned money only to organizations I believe in and have researched.

Is this a new trend, people asking others to fund their family problems so they can go on with life as usual? I recently saw a GoFundMe page

for a funeral, and I know the family is well-off.

I think this is very tacky.
