Community aims to unite against domestic violence

MORRIS – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Grundy County is helping in this effort by hosting Take Back The Night next week.

The event, scheduled for Wednesday at the Grundy County Courthouse in Morris, is free and starts with a gathering at 5 p.m. before the program begins at 5:30 p.m.

The event is organized by Guardian Angel Community Services.

Sarah Denardo of Guardian Angel said attendees will hear the story of Tina Frasco, whose daughter was murdered more than 20 years ago by an abusive ex-boyfriend.

There will be several informational and awareness-oriented displays, such as “Empty Shoes,” which will hold the empty shoes of domestic violence murder victims.

Attendees also will participate in a balloon release.

One balloon will be released for each domestic violence victim in the county in the past year, Denardo said.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said people often say to him domestic violence is a problem in America but not in the county.

That’s not the case, he said.

“National studies show anywhere from one in three to one in four women are victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives,” Helland said. “The numbers are prominent, and Grundy County probably falls in line with the average.”

• Janet M. Henry, 33, of Verona, was arrested by Morris police Thursday on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license.

• Jodi L. Hansen, 49, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police Monday on an active warrant through DuPage County for civil contempt of court. She posted $150 bond and was released with an Oct. 28 court date.

The Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office also is home to Breaking Away Inc., a program that assists survivors of domestic violence with shelter provision and other services. Survivors must have reported the abuse to the police in order to obtain assistance.

Helland said the office is hoping to expand the volunteer base for the program.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the Day of Unity held in October 1981 and was conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children, according to the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence.

• Krystal L. Selover, 30, of Joliet, was arrested by Minooka police Monday on a charge of invalid or expired driver’s license.

Today that passion is present on the pages of the book “Gutsy Girls,” which she created with her cousin Amy Sullivan. The first book in what the duo intends to become a series has the subtitle “Strong Christian Women Who Impacted the World,” “I have always loved art. It was the reason I wanted to go to school,” Wines said.

Growing up Wines and Sullivan were friends, as well as cousins. Wines was the artist and Sullivan was the writer, even as little children.

“Growing up, I wrote.

That’s what I did. I wrote terrible angst-filled poems. I wrote a community newspaper for my trailer park. I wrote fiction that was bad and nonfiction that was worse. I wrote on windows with my finger and on bridges with spray paint.

I wrote,” Sullivan wrote in a blog post.

LOCAL NEWS mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A love for dogs and a passion for exercise will combine Oct. 11 during the 2nd annual Lakewood Animal Hospital 5K & Mile Puppy Trot.

At 9 a.m., participants will cross the starting line at the corner of Lakewood and West Dresden drives in Morris to begin the 5K, which will finish at the same location. At 10 a.m., the Puppy Trot will start at the same spot. The goal of the event is to raise money from registration fees, raffles and donations to go toward the cost of spaying and neutering dogs and cats before their adoption, Lakewood Animal Hospital technician and event organizer Ashley Baker said.

“We encourage people to go the route of adopting a dog or cat,” Baker said.

Proceeds from last year’s event helped cover the spaying or neutering of seven dogs and cats, Baker said. Additionally,

Noting that some people

may not want to run with their dogs, the Puppy Trot around town provides a good opportunity for both humans and dogs to socialize with one another, Baker said. The Puppy Trot also can function as a cool down for runners in the 5K, she said. Although the preregistration period has passed, regular registration at a rate of $35 continues up until the race, Baker said.

First-, second- and thirdplace participants will receive trophies, Baker said. With just two Morris 5Ks left, Applegate said those who participate in four of the five races this year will receive a sweater or jacket from MDDP and be placed in a drawing for other prizes.

The last Run 4 Morris 5K of the year is the Run The Beat 5K on Oct. 24.

District 1 to rebuild shed

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City School District 1 will start for the second time in two years to construct on a shed on district-owned property on Spring Road. The district completed construction in December 2014 on the replacement of a shed damaged in the 2013 Diamond tornado. That shed and another smaller shed were destroyed June 22 in the EF3 tornado that hit Coal City.

“We are not taking action on the small building at this time,” Superintendent Kent Bugg said Wednesday night, after a special board meeting to award the bid for the larger shed.

Bugg said the larger shed on the property is used for storage and by John Trotter, the tenant farmer who farms the school’s property. The shed is part of the agreement with Trotter.

The bid was awarded to FBi Buildings Inc. in Indiana for $72,898 to rebuild the 5,760-square-foot building, ac-

cording to Jason Smith, a school business official.

Bugg said the replacement again will be covered by insurance. The board and the district will look at other existing school property to decide where the smaller shed should be rebuilt that would better fit the district’s needs. After the special meeting, a Committee of the Whole discussed which projects the district should consider finishing while it is still under a five-year property tax agreement with Dresden Nuclear Power Generating Station.

Bugg said a district finance committee, made up of board and community members that met last spring, advised that capital improvements needed to be finished before the tax agreement ends. One of the key projects is stadium facilities. The Committee of the Whole got a first look at what a focus group put together for the stadium and what it would look like to meet the needs of football, soccer, band and physical education, among other uses.

Minooka fire kept from spreading

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Firefighters kept a blaze behind a closed Minooka business from spreading across a dry cornfield Thursday.

The fire caused no injuries and little property damage.

At 11:40 a.m., firefighters from Minooka, Morris and Shorewood responded to what initially appeared to be a brush fire at a house on Wildy Road near County Line Road, Minooka Fire Chief Al Yancey said. Fire crews from Lisbon-Seward Fire Protection District also responded, he said.

The fire was at the closed Big Garden Landscaping, in a house at 335 Wildy Road.

When crews arrived, they found a large trash pile ablaze. The fire extended into the surrounding cornfield, Yancey said.

The high winds and dry cornfields posed a challenge to the firefighters, he said.

“Once [the fire] gets into the cornfield, you got to get it in control in a real hurry,” Yancey said.

The fire spread into the cornfield a little, but firefighters were able to stop it and contain the fire within 45 minutes of arrival, he said.

Yancey said there was no loss of life or injuries as no one was at the location.

A grain bin was damaged by the fire.

He said the cause is under investigation.

D-201 board OKs 2016 budget with deficit

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The Minooka School District 201 Board of Education met Wednesday, and the new budget was presented and approved. Superintendent Kris Monn said there the fiscal 2016 budget had minor changes, with a $45,000 special education state reimbursement.

The budget was approved, with board members Doug Martin and Curt Jebens voting against its passage. The budget’s overall revenues in operating funds and non-operating funds are about $42 million, with projected expenditures at about $44.3 million, leaving a roughly $2.27 million deficit.

“We have $4.5 million less in aid through taxes than we did four years ago,” Monn said.

With Illinois Senate Bill 318 up in the air, Monn said if it does pass, it will have “happened to us at the worst time in the evaluation cycle. It’s capping taxes at a low point when we are com-

ing out of a recession.”

SB 318 amends the Tax Extension Limitation Law in the Property Tax Code, according to the Illinois General Assembly website. The bill makes changes concerning the definitions of “taxing district” and “extension limitation” to provide that, for the 2016 and 2017 levy years, the law applies to all home rule and non-home rule taxing districts outside of Cook County, and the extension limitation for those districts in those levy years is 0 percent.

“We are looking at ways to incorporate more income or cut where we can. It appears that the state is sending us funds this year, but we don’t know when, and the amount is always subject to change,” board President Jim Satorius said. “It really puts us in a bind to maintain.”

Policy 7:40 once stated that home-schooled or private school students were not allowed to participate in sports or extracurricular activities in the district. Drawing Aylward proved a slight challenge for Wines as she read the story and worked to depict the plain and simple subject.

“I thought about what they wore during that period and what colors were used,” Wines said. “After reading the story of her struggles, I started to portray the struggles and feelings through color and visual effects.”

Wines, who typically produces large-scale paintings in acrylic, used pencils to sketch out the ideas, erasing and changing as she went.

Sullivan, who lives in North Carolina, and Wines sent ideas back and forth, both offering suggestions and making small changes.

“Everything I drew was not used, and she suggested small changes. She was so supportive,” Wines said.

A hidden nod to 1975, the year the cousins were born, is on a train ticket used in one of the illustrations.

When the final illustrations were approved, Wines said she was given artistic freedom to bring them to life with Prism markers and Prism pencils.

“I was able to enjoy the process,” she said.

Wines worked on the images from January through

August, staying up late and working feverishly to finish them in time for the book to go to print.

She has used the steps in the process to educate the students at Minooka Junior High, and has shown them what it takes from beginning to end to illustrate a book.

“I tell them that people have always been a struggle for me in my art, and it can be overcome,” Wines said.

The book, which was self-published, has caught the eye of publishers, but Wines said the cousins would like to keep control of the books for now to grow “Gutsy Girls” into something bigger than a five-book series.

“We would like to see a ‘Gutsy Girls’ mini-conference, which will empower girls to be gutsy,” Wines said.

The book starts with the definition of gutsy, an adjective meaning brave, courageous, daring.

“Showing determination even when your heart beats fast, your hands grow sweaty, and you fear failure,” reads the opening to the book.

Wines said the cousins already are working on a second book that will center around forgiveness and will tell the story of Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch Christian who helped many Jews escape the Nazis.

The first book is available on Amazon, and Wines said the due hope to have it available on Barnes & Noble’s website soon.

JAMES MULVEY James Mulvey, 68, passed away on Monday, Sept.

28, 2015, at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa, IL. Born in Joliet, Illinois on Aug. 11, 1947, to Tracy and Ethel (Coundley) Mulvey, he was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is survived by his cousin, Richard Stevens of Frankfort, IL. Raised and educated in Gardner, Illinois, Jim graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb with a degree in the earth sciences. The majority of his working career was spent in public health, working for health departments in Grundy, Mason, and LaSalle counties.

Jim had an interest in languages, and was familiar with German, French, and Latin, with some knowledge of Spanish and several others.

His strong interest was the natural sciences, with a special interest in

weather and climate. Jim enjoyed observing the natural world, reading about the natural sciences and current events, hiking, and bicycling (one-speed bikes only). Since January of 1959, with help from family and friends, he maintained continuous, detailed climatic data in the Gardner and Marseilles area.

One friend, Delmar Holm of Gardner, assisted him in weather observations from 1968 to the present time.

Jim always had a strong concern for the future of our only home, planet Earth.

Jim’s dry and witty sense of humor was one of his best traits. He was also a very generous person, even in his passing. Jim was a registered organ donor, giving the “Gift of Hope” to others. Jim will be deeply missed by his extended family of Delmar Holm, Brenda & Brian McCloskey and children, Karen & Gordy Kirkman, as well as the many co-workers and friends he encountered along his journey of life. Fox Lake police officer shot with his own gun

By KATIE DAHLSTROM kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com FOX LAKE – Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz was shot twice with his own gun, Lake County investigators said Thursday.

What investigators believe was the first shot went into the front of Gliniewicz’s bulletproof vest on the right side, and would have incapacitated him, Lake County Major Crime Task Force Cmdr.

George Filenko said at a news conference outside the Fox Lake Police Department.

“A comparison was made, it would be similar to that of a sledge hammer hitting you in the side,” Filenko said.

The second shot, which Filenko said was the fatal one, struck Gliniewicz in the area of the officer’s upper-left chest.

Filenko would not say whether the fatal shot was fired around or pierced the bulletproof vest.

Timeline of Fox Lake police shooting, manhunt Filenko said investigators continue to pursue the case as a homicide, though officials have not officially ruled it as a homicide, suicide, accident or undetermined. Filenko

said there were indications of a struggle at the crime scene, but gunshot residue tests were inconclusive in discerning who fired Gliniewicz’s .40 caliber service weapon.

“The weapon could have been fired by Lt. Gliniewicz, or he could have been in close proximity of the weapon being fired,” Filenko said.

Filenko would not expand on what the signs of a struggle were or if other shots were fired.

Thursday’s update came one month into the investigation into Gliniewicz’s shooting death. Gliniewicz, 52, was shot and killed Sept. 1 near a shuttered concrete plant in the 100 block of Honing Road while investigating three suspicious men, two white and one black.

Investigators Thursday did reveal more details about the morning Gliniewicz was shot.

A GPS unit in Gliniewicz’s squad car showed he was on foot in the area for about 20 minutes before radioed to dispatch that he was investigating the individuals, Filenko said. Police have previously said Gliniewicz was assigned to patrol the area, which has been the source of complaints

about vandalism, squatting and drugs.

The 30-year-veteran of the police department initially told a dispatcher he didn’t need a backup unit, Filenko said. He asked for backup at 7:55 a.m., officers arrived at 8:01 a.m., and Gliniewicz’s body was found at 8:09 a.m. about 50 yards from his vehicle, police have said.

Filenko revealed investigators located nine DNA samples from unknown sources – a typical amount for a similar crime – on Gliniewicz’s things at the crime scene, and that three of those pieces were of high enough quality to be run through the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

One of the DNA samples has been identified as coming from a male, Filenko said.

Investigators have taken more than 100 DNA swabs from anyone who might have had contact with Gliniewicz or the crime scene, including police, Lake County Sheriff’s Det. Chris Covelli said. By the end of the day Thursday, investigators planned to have 30 or 40 more to send to the Northeastern Illinois Regional Crime Lab.

Filenko would not reveal if any of the DNA samples were collected from Gliniewicz’s service weapon, which police previously said was found at the crime scene.

Although Filenko said during previous updates that he believed the three suspects might have stayed in the area, he said Thursday he could not be as sure.

Investigators had previously revealed that a federally trained K-9 unit on the scene that day was able to positively track a scent away from the scene. That the dog was following an ongoing track when its handler succumbed to the heat and had to be evacuated from the scene.

Covelli said they have not ruled out any theory and the investigation remains “extraordinarily complex” and active. Filenko added investigators have held back some details to protect their case.

“I’ve had heard the word ‘conspiracy’ used quite often,” Filenko said. “And we want the public to have as much information as possible without revealing any information that is going to compromise our investigation.”

British movie director John Guillermin dies at age 89 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – John Guillermin, a veteran British director best known for bringing to life big budget adventure films like “The Towering Inferno” and the 1976 “King Kong” has died.

He was 89.

Guillermin died Sunday at his Topanga Canyon home. Producer and friend Nick Redman confirmed Guillermin’s death. Guillermin had been ill for some time, but his death was unexpected, Redman said Wednesday.

Over the course of his long career, Guillermin directed numerous Hollywood legends, including Peter Sellers, Bette Davis, Paul Newman, Orson Welles and Fred Astaire.

Redman says Guillermin was underrated, “a great British character” and an “urbane, sophisticated, and cultivated guy.”

DEVOTIONS Octoberfest breakfast to be held Saturday

COAL CITY – Sunshine Circle of Coal City United Methodist invites the community to its Octoberfest Breakfast in the church’s fellowship hall from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday. The Circle will serve biscuits and sausage gravy, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and tea. The cost is $5 for adults and ages 13 and older; $3 for ages 6 through 12; ages 5 and younger eat free. The church is at 6805 E. McArdle Road in Coal City.

Blessing of the Animals at Immaculate Conception

MORRIS – At 1 p.m. Saturday, Immaculate Conception Parish will celebrate the Blessing of the Animals. The blessing will take place in the parking lot east of the church, 622 E. Jackson St. in Morris. The entire community is invited to bring their pets – house pets or farms pets – to be blessed.

The blessing of the animals is a tradition handed down from the 13th century. St. Francis of Assisi, who died in 1226, spent his life working for the poor and also had a great understanding of the unity of all creation. He addressed every living creature as brother or sister and treated everything created by God with consideration, compassion and reverence. St. Francis is called the patron saint of ecologists and of all people who work to protect the environment. His feast day is celebrated Oct. 4.

Memorial service for those with pregnancy, infant loss

YORKVILLE – At 2 p.m. Sunday a memorial service for babies who have gone too soon will be held in the Prayer Chapel at Cross Lutheran Church, 8609 Route 47 in Yorkville.

roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – It’s rare that a team can have a successful season while also building for the future, but that it exactly what’s happening for the Minooka girls volleyball team this fall.

The Indians rolled past Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield South, 25-13, 25-21, on Thursday night, improving to 13-6 overall and 7-1 in league play. Two of the four sophomores on the Minooka roster played prominent roles in the win, as Alli Papesh, who has already committed to play for University of Dayton when her Minooka career is finished, had eight kills and four blocks, while Rocky Perinar had three kills and seven blocks. Meanwhile, seniors Ginger Perinar (8 kills, 15 digs), a Southern Illinois recruit, and Maddie Alessio (14 digs, 17 service points, 4 aces) and junior Brooklynn Bachmann (24 assists) also were key to the victory.

It’s been that kind of formula that has been successful for Minooka all season.

“We only had four seniors and six juniors at tryouts,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “I knew I would have to bring up some sophomores, and all four of them [Papesh, Perinar, Holly Bonde and Taylor Baranski] have played great. We have a good mix with them and the juniors and seniors. They are having success while getting varsity experience.

“I used to say we are a young team, but now I am telling them they aren’t young any more. We are 20 matches into the season. They are varsity players now.”

Those players had the lead the entire first set, as Rocky Perinar for the first kill of the match. The Indians extended the lead to 11-8 before Alessio got the serve. By the time she was done, she had mixed up high, short serves with long, hard line drives to the tune of 10 straight points, including two aces, and Minooka owned a 21-8 lead. Later, Ginger Perinar ended the first set with a

The second set wasn’t as easy for Minooka, as Plainfield South jumped to a 4-0 lead on the serving of Sophie Berta and three straight kills by Melissa Ryan. Minooka finally tied the score at 6 before Plainfield South took a 12-10 lead.

But then Alessio got the serve and got the Indians out to a 17-12 advantage, getting two aces as well as a kill and a block from Rocky Perinar. Papesh had two kills and Ginger Perinar one, along with an ace from Bachmann, as Minooka stretched the lead to 23-13, but Plainfield South wasn’t quite done.

Berta served the Cougars to within 23-18, recording two straight aces in the process.

Two more aces by Margaret Kiebenow pulled South to within 24-21 before Ginger Perinar ended the match with a kill.

“Our biggest downfall this year has been passing,” Prosek said. “We’ve been focusing on that all year, but you saw it tonight. In the first game, we had zero serve receive errors. In the second, we had five. I was glad to see us finish the match, though. In some of our losses, we have let a bad stretch continue, and we were able to close it out tonight.

“One good thing for us is that we have a variety of hitters and we can mix things up.

Brooklynn Bachmann is the point guard on the basketball team, and she is used to kind of running things. She distributes the ball well. We don’t have one hitter that we go to all the time. We have three or four and that makes us hard to defend. Also, we switched Rocky Perinar to the middle a few weeks ago and she has really done a great job. We are 9-1 since we did that.”

are in a strong feeding and bedding pattern. As long as food sources are present, and right now there are lots of fields yet to be harvested, the deer will be nearby.

In fact, if a localized herd is left undisturbed it will stay as close to its source as possible.

Ask any farmer and they surely will tell you about giant bucks they kicked up while combining.

Even a field of soybeans can provide enough cover for bedding deer.

Once the combines start rolling, these groups of whitetails will make their way to the closet timber stand. This is where the successful October deer hunter understands his property and how the deer use it.

Your entrance and exit routes to these timber stands are always important, but I feel the early season is some of the most critical times to plan your path carefully.

The deer trail this time of year often is not very long.

Like I said earlier, as long as the deer feel secure, they will stay close to the food.

Successful bowhunters position themselves on these travel corridors. That is why your path in and out of the woods needs to be well hidden, worked with the wind and kept with the terrain of the land.

If these factors are used properly, you can sneak right into a pretty small space and setup.

As the season moves along and food sources become more scarce, the travel corridors lengthen, making entering and exiting the woods easier.

The next critical factor, I believe, to successful October hunting is being patient.

That first nice deer of the season gets our heart pumping and our desire to let an arrow fly might supercede the patience it takes to wait for a clear opportunity.

Most of us have made this mistake sometime in our bowhunting careers. The end result is almost always a spooked deer and us mentally kicking ourselves for not waiting a little longer.

Watching that buck take just one more step to clear a small sapling seems to take forever.

If you already are drawn back with your bow, the waiting becomes that much harder.

The wait is worth it

though. Early season hunting is a massive exercise in patience.

As the leaves slowly turn, and early October marches onward, I hope you find some time to slip into your favorite deer stand.

Enjoy the time outdoors, be patient, and find those food sources.

You’ll be glad you did.

For those who live to pursue the infamous whitetail deer, the first weekend in October marks the beginning of a new year.

No, the calendar is not suddenly saying 2016, the dawning of October means opening day for bowhunters throughout the state.

The anticipation that courses through a deer hunter’s veins as that day nears is hard to put into words.

As one walks out of the woods on the last day of the previous season, the thoughts of crisp October mornings and mild evenings take over.

Stands have been set.

Bows fine tuned. And trail cameras prepped.

If everything works out, then a well prepared hunter should have many opportunities throughout the season to fill his or her tags.

To be one of the successful bowhunters means you also need to have an understanding of early season patterns and what October hunting is not.

Deer hunters love to think of giant bucks with one thing on their mind -– finding that doe.

This singular mindset leads that wall hanger to do things he never normally would and possibly travel right by your stand. October is not the time for that.

October deer are some of my favorite to pursue because they are much more predicable.

Yes, I like to see numerous bucks crashing through the woods at all hours of the day as much as the next hunter, but the rut can be unpredictable. That is what makes it so alluring. But on any given day, I much rather have deer that are easy to pattern.

Morris falls to Sycamore STAFF REPORTS SYCAMORE – The Sycamore boys soccer team concluded senior night by extending its undefeated conference record after defeating Morris, 2-0, Thursday night.

Sycamore (13-4-1 overall, 5-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) had a goal in both halves.

Forward Matthew Coulibaly started the scoring in the 14th minute when his shot deflected off of Morris’ keeper Matt Borgstrom.

Phillip Maillefer capped the victory with his goal in the fourth minute of the second half.

The Spartans had their share of shots on goal during the game – totaling four in the first half and five in the second – but two goals is all it took to take down Morris, which totaled just three shots.

The Spartans have six se-

niors, and according to head coach David Bachta, they have had an obvious impact.

“It’s all about the commitment they have shown.”

Bachta said. “When you look at the change in the program as far as wins go, that really comes from them. They’ve worked hard all summer and throughout the season and that kind of work ethic rubs off on some of the younger guys.”

While Sycamore reflected on the senior leadership they have, Morris (6-10-0, 0-5) is playing with a thin roster that included just a handful of substitutes and even a few players who moved over at halftime from the junior varsity game on the adjacent field.

“We were hanging with them in the first half, but our problem all year has been the depth on our roster.” Morris coach David Valdivia said.

“We have seven sophomores playing up on varsity right now, so its tough right now, but next year they’re going to be really tough to beat because they’re getting the valuable experience right now.”

Kaylin Korte led Morris (8-132) to an NI Big 12 crossover win with 17 kills, five digs, two blocks and an ace.

Janelle Brehm added four kills, five digs and two aces, while Veronica Johnson had three blocks, one kill and one dig.

Addison Polite had 15 assists, four digs and one ace, while Ashley Hood had seven assists and three digs.

Morris won the sophomore match, 20-25, 25-10, 25-18, lost the freshman A match, 2725, 20-25, 25-17, and won the freshman B match, 25-17, 2520.

Papelbon risky in deadline deals

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com CINCINNATI – When Jonathan Papelbon clamped his hand around Nationals teammate Bryce Harper’s throat Sunday, the choke was on Papelbon and the Nats’ front office.

But among those who had no trouble breathing – especially when it came to sighs of relief – were a few baseball executives watching from more than 500 miles away, in the middle of baseball’s happiest construction zone.

“I’ve known Jonathan for a long time. I certainly won’t disparage him,” said Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer, talking Thursday about the powder keg the Cubs might have avoided when they failed to make a trade-deadline deal for Papelbon work within their payroll limits.

Whether the closer would have clashed with any wouldbe Cubs teammates the way he did with Harper, Sunday’s

dugout incident in Washington at least provides a flashing-neon reminder of how fragile the balance between chemistry and talent can be when trading for playoff-run help in July and August.

“He had some pretty unbelievable seasons in Boston,” Hoyer said of the All-Star closer for the Red Sox’s 2007 World Series champion, “but it does say a lot about that. I think that’s one of the things you really wrestle with a lot at the trade deadline.

“You always want to improve your team; you always want to add depth to your team.

“But it’s a house of cards all the time. You don’t know which move is going to topple things or which move is really going to bolster things.”

The Nationals, a preseason World Series favorite, who already had a teetering clubhouse mix and manager, are 28-33 since acquiring Papelbon from Philadelphia on July 28.

A poll and a speech might have hardened positions even further on both sides of the highly partisan and bitter state government impasse.

The speech, by Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich, you likely already know about. The survey, taken by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s pollster, you probably don’t. So, let’s start with the poll. Basswood Research, which has done extensive work for the Rauner campaign, surveyed 800 likely Illinois general election voters Sept. 14 and 15 and found quite a bit of support for Rauner and a whole lot of opposition to House Speaker Michael Madigan.

The poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, found that 45.5 percent approve of Rauner’s job performance, while 40 percent disapprove and 14 percent don’t know. But a whopping 71 percent agreed with the statement: “Bruce Rauner is trying to shake things up in Springfield, but the career politicians are standing in his way,” while only 21 percent said that wasn’t true.

Another 55 percent agreed that “Bruce Rauner is working to find bipartisan solutions that will help fix Illinois’ budget mess and improve the struggling state economy,” while 34.5 percent said it wasn’t true.

President Obama’s favorables (50 percent) were higher than Gov. Rauner’s (47 percent) in the poll, but Obama’s unfavorables (45 percent) were higher than Rauner’s (40 percent).

Only 11 percent approve of the job being done by the General Assembly, while 73 percent disapprove. House Speaker Michael Madigan’s favorable rating was only 21 percent, while his unfavorable was 60 percent. Only 19 percent had no opinion of Madigan either way, which means

VIEWS Rich Miller Madigan is quite well-known to voters. An overwhelming 76 percent agreed “Mike Madigan controls the Democratic legislators in Springfield,” while a mere 10 percent disagreed and 14 percent weren’t sure.

There are caveats here. This is Rauner’s pollster, so Democrats likely will be dismissive.

Also, the group that commissioned the poll, the Illinois Business and Industry Council, is an unknown quantity with a vague website that was created in July.

The point is that the Rauner people trust that pollster and are convinced of the poll’s results. So they truly believe they are winning and can make Madigan pay a steep price for losing.

But on the other side of the equation, we now have some very powerful folks who believe they have God – or at least the pope – firmly on their side. Archbishop Cupich’s speech Sept.17 to the Chicago Federation of Labor was perhaps the most profound rallying cry for the importance of organized labor I’ve ever seen. Without mentioning the anti-union governor’s name, he made it clear he and Pope Francis stand firmly with unions – both public and private sector – and against those who would exploit or weaken them. The poll numbers easily could harden the governor’s position, and the archbishop’s timing might very well end up hurting many of the neediest people served by his church’s charities if we don’t get a budget deal anytime soon.

Deciding what Ill. lawmakers stand for Remarkably, despite the urgency of the state’s financial crisis, the Cubs could be hoisting a World Series trophy before Illinois has a real budget.

I can’t fault Democrats for opposing severe cuts, and I stand alongside many of my Republican colleagues in opposing higher taxes. Like the people I represent, I believe with hard work and compromise, we can find a more balanced approach. What troubles me is that instead of seeking this middle ground, both sides have come to agree on a destructive shared delusion that it’s OK for taxpayers to suffer as long as the other side of the aisle takes the blame. It’s clear breaking the budget stalemate will require a new way forward.

The governor campaigned on closing corporate tax loopholes as a means of generating revenue and closing the state’s budget deficit. This is a common-sense approach Republicans and Democrats should agree on, but, unfortunately, the governor has yet to introduce legislation to make it happen. Illinois can’t wait any longer. Last week, I introduced a bill that will generate new revenue with-

Some of these loopholes are as obscure as allowing multinational corporations to deduct their foreign investments and subsidizing offshore drilling taking place thousands of miles away from Illinois. All told, these loopholes account for billions of dollars at a time when the state is debating whether we can afford to help a single mother take care of her children while she works a minimum-wage job.

Closing tax loopholes gives us a third way to approach the state’s financial challenges, one that doesn’t raise taxes or make massive cuts to services middle-class families rely on. I think that’s something everyone should be able to get behind.

Another critical step in working toward a fair, streamlined tax code is fixing our broken property tax system so it encourages long-

term homeownership instead of forcing people out of their homes. I recently introduced a bill capping property taxes for homeowners over the age of 65 who have lived in their homes for more than 30 years. Additionally, I also am pushing for a new law that will ensure homeowners are not forced to pay more in property taxes than they paid for their home by setting the property’s most recent sale price as a limit on the cumulative amount of taxes that can be assessed.

Our most difficult moments have a way of showing what we’re really all about.

As such, the decisions Illinois will make over the coming days, weeks and months will be the truest reflection of what we, as a state, really value. Do we protect corporate loopholes or do we protect the families we represent? Do we fix a broken property tax system, or do we force seniors out of their homes?

It’s time for legislators and the governor to go to Springfield and stay there until we decide.

Some pairs lead the queen from ace-king-queen, asking partner to give count. Then, an ace-lead is from only the ace-king.

It is easy for declarer to cash his heart ace at trick five – and then grumble about bad luck when West discards. However, a resourceful South would cross to dummy with a club and lead the heart jack. Maybe East will be tempted to cover; or he might take ages thinking about it. Either way, declarer makes his contract despite the 3-0 trump split.

Finally, if East plays low smoothly, South wins with his ace and, against most opponents, will find the trumps breaking 2-1.
