Growth and progress in Grundy MORRIS – This time of year, it seems there is construction around every curve.

Despite the inconvenience, that construction represents jobs, growth and progress.

Certainly the newest unemployment numbers point to recovery and prosperity in our Grundy County communities.

A rate of 6.2 percent for August is the best rate we have seen since 2008 and is a full 150 basis points lower than last year at this time. Recruiting starts now with the Grundy County Internship Program “This program has provided very strong, enthusiastic candidates. I hope our site continues to be a part of the internship program,” stated local business leader.

The office is busy reaching out to local businesses and organizations to host interns for summer 2016.

The internship program is a cooperative effort between business and education. The four local high schools prescreen high-quality, high-performing students to work in local businesses. With nearly 85 students submitting more than 400 applications, there is

The number of internships has increased from just nine positions three years ago to 25 this year, thanks to the quality candidates. It is a great opportunity to educate our young people about the opportunities right here in Grundy County.

The variety and type of work experiences is vast.

This year students worked in engineering, health care, IT, human resources, government affairs, accounting and many other fields. Health care powers local economy

Local business and community leaders recently had a great opportunity to get behind the scenes at Morris Hospital and other health care providers on the annual GEDC Bus Tour. The first stop on the visit was at Morris Oncology and Morris Radiation services on Route 6.

Many people recognize the facility by the newly installed solar panels, affirming their commitment to living green.

The facility is the only one of its kind in Grundy County and provides high-quality service to local residents and eliminates the need to travel far distances for chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

The next stop was Park Pointe, where the group learned about the upcoming plans for a memory care center just to the west of the existing facility. The participants then went to the Rezin Medical

Facility that houses Rezin Orthopedics, ATI, and surgery center.

Morris Hospital was the final destination, and it provided an excellent tour. Most local residents have had an opportunity to visit the hospital but never appreciate what it takes, behind the scenes, to run a state-of-the-art hospital.

Bus tour participants toured the laboratory, pharmacy, IT department and much more.

As the largest employer in Grundy County, the facility was staffed with highly educated, skilled and motivated employees.

The tour reminded everyone of how fortunate Grundy County is to have first-class health care services provided right here in our community.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – First, for anyone who couldn’t stay until the end of the Civil War re-enactment Saturday at Dollinger Family Farm, the North won.

But after four years of fighting at the time, the Union side was winning most of its battles because the Confederate armies were isolated, outnumbered and, most importantly, starving, Jerry Kowalski told the crowd as troops began taking positions.

On the third Saturday in October, an Illinois pumpkin farm became a Virginia creek on April 6, 1865.

Thousands of onlookers armed with cellphones watched hundreds of re-enactors armed with rifles and cannons portray the Battle of Sailor’s Creek.

Kowalski, who played Union Gen. George Thomas, used a public address system to provide commentary on the various charges and retreats the audience could watch all around them.

This year marked the 20th year the Dollinger family has hosted Civil War Days.

Clothesline Across Campus MORRIS – Students at White Oak School in Morris were encouraged to clean out their closets and bring unwanted clothes to school Friday.

The fifth annual Clothesline Across Campus Service Learning Project brought in an array of clothes in all different shapes and colors.

The school collects gently used clothing for infants, toddlers, children, teenagers and adults that will be given to area families who can use them.

Fifteen leading beef herds from Northern Illinois will offer 25 Herefords, Angus, Shorthorn, Chi, Simmental and crossbred steers and heifers, according to a news release from event organizers.

LaSalle health department offering IBCCP program

LASALLE – The LaSalle County Health Department, through its Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program grant, can pay for mammograms and pap smears for women who qualify.

Residents of LaSalle or Grundy counties between the ages of 35 to 64 and have no insurance or whose insurance has a high deductible qualify, according to a news release.

For those women who do not qualify for the IBCCP program or have related charges not covered by the IBCCP grant, there are a limited amount of community donated funds to assist with those services.

MORRIS – Nuclear Science Week, which starts Monday, could mean more in the Grundy County area than in some parts of the country.

With approximately 2,400 employees between Exelon’s Braidwood, Dresden and LaSalle Generating Stations, according to ExelonCorp.com, there’s a good chance area residents have a friend or family member who has worked or presently works at one of the stations.

Morris Area Public Library’s Adult Programming Director Sarah Fisher said she was contacted by Women in Nuclear’s LaSalle branch about holding an event at the library.

The Morris Library is hosting “Pandora’s Promise: Film and Panel Discussion on Nuclear Power” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in the library auditorium. The film will be followed by a discussion.

“They’re going to have a panel of scientists from LaSalle and Dresden Stations,” Fisher said.

In the 90-minute documentary released in 2013, director and producer Robert Stone profiles energy experts and environmentalists who once preached against nuclear energy but now embrace it.

In August, U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, hosted a panel discussion, minus a film viewing, in Braid-

8 Morris man gets room

makeover from nonprofit

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Ryan Bernickus only expected a new paint job for his bedroom makeover.

He walked into the room Sunday night to discover his very own Chicago sportsthemed man cave, equipped with entertainment gear, and comfort and recovery furnishings from his upcoming yearlong chemotherapy treatments.

“I’m trying to take it all in,” said 23-year-old Ryan. “I don’t have words, but I am grateful to have this room for my recovery after my weeklong treatments in Chicago.”

In the summer of 2014, Ryan was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer diagnosed mostly in children and adolescents. He finished treatment in early 2015, but recently discovered

the cancer had returned and spread to other areas of his body. He finished radiation and is now prepared for chemotherapy.

With a bedroom in the basement of the home of his parents, Rick and Marcy Bernickus, Ryan found it difficult to tackle the stairs when he did not feel well.

While his twin brother and sister, Matt and Kellen, were away at college, Ryan slept in his sister’s bedroom upstairs.

With only three weeks to check out the home, brainstorm designs and execute a plan, Audra Crowther and her crew from Team Make-a-Difference swapped and transformed Ryan’s and Kellen’s bedrooms and added a new TV in brother Matt’s room as well.

Crowther said Rick only expected them to paint and offered to buy things for the team to put in his son’s room,

but she insisted that he let the nonprofit and crew take care of everything for the makeover.

When it came to what Ryan wanted, Crowther said again, like his father, his requests were simple.

“He just wanted an adult room and new bookshelves, which made me want to give him everything. He was just so grateful for us to just paint and swap the rooms,” Crowther said. “I made him fill out a very detailed interview form with special requests so we knew exactly how to make his room special.”

The ideal staged conflict lasts about 45 minutes.

But things can “bog down” quickly if a few units don’t die where they’re expected to, so Fratt and his Confederate counterpart keep walkie-talkies under their jackets in case they need to improvise things across the field of battle.

Although some ranks announced their intent to die in battle, buglers are somewhat guaranteed to survive to the end of the re-enactment in order to signal the final push to

everyone in combat.

Before they started killing each other Saturday afternoon, officers from both sides were checking with the enlisted men to find who’d parked a black Ford Ranger and camping trailer next to a battery of Confederate cannons that were going to be fired and charged upon.

“There’s always complications, but that’s never happened before,” Kowalski said.

After several announcements from the far side of the field, the vehicle finally was moved just before the fighting began, by a man wearing Confederate gray trousers.

Before rifle shots from hidden vantage points, rebel yells and cannon volleys that produced loud noises and perfect smoke rings echoed through the farm, both sides

gave their hostess a “Pass and Review” procession in appreciation.

“I have definitely learned more about the Civil War from doing this,” she said.

The battle was followed by a graphic demonstration of Civil War medical treatment and a recitation of the Gettysburg Address by an Abraham Lincoln impersonator.

A second battle took place Sunday.

Although not quite as important as Lee’s surrender to Grant, both sides were eager to negotiate whose tent would host their enemies for whiskey and cigars Saturday night once the guns fell silent.

BRIEF NRCS announces EQIP application deadlines

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois agricultural producers who want to improve natural resources and address concerns are encouraged to sign up for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program through the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Eric Gerth, acting Illinois NRCS State Conservationist, announced that Nov. 20 and Jan. 15 will be the two EQIP application deadlines in Illinois.

“Producers can sign-up for EQIP at any time throughout the year, but to compete for the upcoming funding periods; I encourage producers with resource concerns to submit an application by one of the application deadlines,” Gerth said in the news release.

Producers interested in EQIP should submit a signed application (NRCS-CPA-1200 form) to the local NRCS field office.

Applications submitted by Nov. 20 and Jan. 15 will be evaluated

by NRCS staff for the funding period submitted.

Former Everton manager dies at age 69 The ASSOCIATED PRESS LIVERPOOL, England – Howard Kendall, who led Everton to two league championships and a European title in the mid-1980s in the first of three coaching spells with the English club, has died.

He was 69.

Everton said Kendall died in hospital in Southport, northwestern England, on Saturday. The club did not give a cause of death.

Kendall first took charge of Everton from 1981-87, winning the English league title and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1985, and the league again in 1987.

It was the most successful period in the club’s history.

He also managed Everton from 1990-93 and for the 199798 season, having previously spent seven years of his playing career at the club.

“It is with great sadness that Everton Football Club has learned of the passing of Howard Kendall,” an Everton club statement said. “The most successful manager in

As well as managing Everton, Kendall also took control of Blackburn, Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, Manchester City, Notts County, Sheffield United and Greek sides Xanthi and Ethnikos Piraeus.

But it was at Everton – specifically during his first tenure as manager – where he achieved the most suc-

cess, often battling against fierce local rival Liverpool for silverware.

Everton won the 1985 league title by finishing 13 points ahead of Liverpool.

Kendall’s side also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup that season and reached the FA Cup final, where it lost to Manchester United.

Liverpool beat Everton 3-1 in the 1986 FA Cup final and also regained the league

title, before Everton won it back the following season.

Kendall’s teams in that era included footballers such as Peter Reid, Trevor Steven, Andy Gray and Gary Lineker – some of the best players to represent Everton.

“It was a privilege to play for Howard Kendall’s Everton,” Lineker wrote on Twitter on Saturday. “Condolences to all his family.”

The league title in 1987 was the final act of Kendall’s first reign as Everton manager, as he departed for Bilbao soon after.

As a player, Kendall was considered one of the best never to play for England.

Together with Alan Ball and Colin Harvey at Everton, he formed a three-man midfield partnership which was nicknamed “the holy trinity” for its contribution to winning the league title in 1970.

He was signed for Everton from Preston North End in 1967 and also played for Birmingham, Stoke and Blackburn, before returning to Goodison Park in 1981.

Egyptian novelist Gamal el-Ghitani dies at 70 The ASSOCIATED PRESS CAIRO – Gamal el-Ghitani, one of Egypt’s most acclaimed novelists, died Sunday morning at the age of 70.

Egypt’s state-run news agency MENA said el-Ghitani died of respiratory complications at a military hospital in Cairo.

El-Ghitani is the author of the classic novel “Zayni Barakat,” a scathing critique of totalitarianism set in the Mamluk era.

He pioneered a style “which was a kind of magic realism but an intensely Egyptian sort, with roots in both the history of Arabic literature but also areas such as Sufism and magic, and he managed to combine these

in a very compelling way,” said Humphrey Davies, who translated el-Ghitani’s “Pyramid Texts” and “The Mahfouz Dialogues,” a series of conversations with Nobel laureate writer Naguib Mahfouz.

“I think a very distinctive voice has been lost,” Davies said.

El-Ghitani worked as a carpet designer before becoming a war correspondent for the Egyptian newspaper Akhbar al-Yom in the late sixties.

In 1993 el-Ghitani founded Akhbar el-Adab, Egypt’s most prominent literary publication, and ran it as editor in chief until 2011.

Under his leadership, the publication was viewed as an

independent voice, often critical of the state.

“Culture, as we saw it, wasn’t about the movements of intellectuals and the activities of the Ministry of Culture bodies, but about society in general. We were able to publish what none of the stateowned newspapers were able to share,” el-Ghitani said in a 2012 video interview with Ahram Online.

He was an outspoken critic of the Muslim Brotherhood and supported the military’s overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

Egypt’s presidency issued statements praising el-Ghitani following his death, calling him a “symbol to Arab writers who mobilize their

pens for the service of their homeland and their people.”

“We mourn the pioneer of pioneers of the Arabic novel, the guard of guards of nationalist culture, a warrior in the field of war literature, a correspondent and soldier on the battlefront wielding his pen as a weapon, and one of the first military correspondents,” the armed forces were quoted as saying by MENA. El-Ghitani won the Nile Award, Egypt’s highest state honor, in 2015.

State media reported that hundreds of people attended his funeral Sunday afternoon at Sayida Nafisa Mosque in Cairo.

He is survived by his wife, Magda el-Gindi, and his son, Mohammed.

Fannin enters CSC’s Education Hall of Excellence SUBMITTED REPORT CANTON, Mo. – Steven Fannin of Morris is one of two honorees being inducted into the Education Hall of Excellence during Culver-Stockton College’s Homecoming Celebration, which is this weekend.

Fannin graduated from Culver-Stockton College with a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education with an emphasis in biology in 1971.

In addition to his degree from Culver-Stockton, Fan-

nin has completed all coursework for his PhD in educational administration at Illinois State University.

He also holds a Master of Science in educational administration and a certificate of advanced study in education administration from Illinois State.

During his career, Fannin held superintendent positions at Morris Community High School and Freeburg Community High School.

Prior to those appointments, he was a teacher and eventually the principal of Hall High School in Spring Valley. Fannin also taught science at Minooka Community High School in Minooka.

In addition to his teaching and administration roles,

Fannin also coached football, basketball, baseball and wrestling at Hall High School.

Among Fannin’s numerous civic roles, he is a member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators and is chair of the Three Rivers Division of the organization.

He also belongs to the American Association of School Administrators, the Illinois Association of School Business Officials, and the Three Rivers Education for Employment Executive Committee.

He is also the chair of the Grundy County Business-Education Council, the chair of the American Cancer Society Board, the president of Morris Rotary and the chair of the Grundy Area Vocational

Center Board.

In addition, Fannin chairs the Grundy County Relay for Life and is a member of the board of directors for the Illinois Division of the Ameri-

can Cancer Society.

Fannin is married to Mary Sabatini, and has three children – Adam, Michael (married to Sunny Kim) and Molly.

A BATTLE OF WITS Strong defense keeps Coal City in the game against Lisle

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – A look around the state at the football scores from this weekend’s action features many games in which at least one team scored 30 points or more. Some even saw both teams break 40.

That was not the case Friday in Coal City, as the Coalers and Lisle staged an old-fashioned defensive struggle. Unfortunately for Coal City, it was the Lisle defense that prevailed with a 7-3 victory, leaving Coal City with a 4-4 record, needing a win Friday

at Seneca to move to 5-4 and becoming eligible for the playoffs and then hoping that they have enough playoff points to make the field.

It’s certainly not the ideal situation for his team to be in, but Coal City coach Lenny Onsen is glad his team still has a shot.

“Actually, I am one of those

guys that feels like a 5-4 team shouldn’t make the playoffs,” he said. “But, we still have a shot to do it, so we still have some work to do, I can’t fault our defense. They only gave up one score. Our offense really struggled to get anything going, though.

“Give Lisle’s defense credit. They aren’t real big, but

they are very quick to the ball and they closed any holes real fast.”

They did, indeed, as Coal City’s running game – which has been the Coalers’ offensive strength this season – was held to 40 yards on 29 attempts.

Seneca’s glimpses of the future in late season

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent PLANO – Seneca found itself Friday night in a position that has been all too familiar over the past several years – playing without hope of making the state football playoffs.

A 47-7 loss at Wilmington in Week 7 officially eliminated the Fighting Irish from the postseason, making this the 13th time in 14 seasons their season will end after nine weeks. All that was left Friday at Plano, where Seneca lost 4823, and this week against Coal City is the chance to play spoiler.

As the injuries have mounted on top of injuries, coach

Ted O’Boyle and his staff have been challenged to simply field a full team. Seneca’s health situation has been so bad that late in the Wilmington game, its varsity was forced to turn to what had been the backup quarterback for its sophomore team at the beginning of the season.

While Hunter Greve, who started the year as the starting sophomore-team quarterback, was back for the Plano game and was able to play the whole night, Wyatt Aldrich, Jack Coonan and Anthony Willoughby joined the list of banged-up players during the game.

The positive side to the injury mess is that several

sophomores and juniors have gained valuable varsity experience out of necessity. Several made an impression Friday on O’Boyle.

“I thought Hunter Greve did a nice job at quarterback, kind of controlling it tonight. … He’s kind of been thrown into this, and I liked what I saw tonight. I saw him kind of grow up with some confidence,” O’Boyle said.

“I saw (junior) Austin Cockream come into the linebacker position and make some stops. We’re really depleted – injuries have really hurt us at the linebacker position – Austin came in, did a nice job.

I thought our receivers really did a good job early in the

game. They ran good routes.

We didn’t complete a whole lot, (but) we created separation there at times.”

Greve has been a quarterback much of the time since he started to play organized football with the Seneca Pride in sixth grade.

Greve, who describes himself as a “more vocal” player than he was in August, expects the reps he has gotten with the varsity Irish will pay off in future seasons.

“I’ll be very prepared,” Greve said. “I’ll be going to quarterback camp in the summer, just trying to get better all around.”

The future has not completely overshadowed the pres-

ent for O’Boyle, however. He wants the Irish to have as successful a sendoff as possible for the players about to play their final game next week.

“Credit the seniors for showing you can still play as hard as you can no matter what. I think (the sophomores and juniors) can learn something from some of this stuff,” O’Boyle said.

“I even thanked ‘em this week, the seniors. I know this season wasn’t what we had hoped for, with the injuries we’ve sustained, it’s just been devastating, and for guys to continue to come to practice and continue to give effort, and the effort that they gave tonight was just great.”

The Coalers did have 114 passing yards, but 61 of those came on a trick play late in the game when receiver Christian Johnson, the backup quarter-

back, took a lateral and threw deep to Brad Littleton.

Coal City’s defense, meanwhile, performed admirably and did what it could to keep Lisle off the board.

The Coalers blocked two field goals – one each by Mike Chiarappa and Alec Leasure – and got fumble recoveries from Mike Pampuch and Junior Arias.

And, while Coal City’s de-

fense was busy working hard to keep Lisle off the board, the Lions hurt themselves with some key penalties.

In the first quarter, Lisle’s Mark McGrath made a 30-yard field goal, but there was an illegal procedure penalty that took the points off the board and forced another try from 5-yards back.

That’s the kick that Chiarappa blocked. In the second

quarter, Lisle forced Coal City to punt from deep in its own territory.

The snap was high and Littleton was able to keep it from going over his head and out of the end zone for a safety. He managed to get a kick away, but it was short and gave Lisle good field position.

But Lisle was called for roughing the kicker and that gave Coal City a first down and

15 more yards.

“Our defense was pretty good, but we still had some breakdowns,” Onsen said. “We had a few times when we needed a stop earlier so we could give the offense the ball in better position, but we gave up a first down.

In a game like this, field position was a big thing, and Lisle definitely won that battle.

Chicago’s loss to Detroit is an indicator of what needs work BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush front dominating the line of scrimmage most of the day.

The Bears’ defense struggled in the front seven as shown by the Lions’ success on the ground, but it’s worth asking how much of that was because of the absence of middle lineback Shea McClellin and defensive lineman Ego Ferguson.

Much was being made of the Bears’ improvement from 31st in the NFL last year in total defense to fourth in the coming into the Lions game, but they still were 28th in points allowed before Sunday’s game, and both of those stats will take a serious hit after allowing the Lions 37 points and 546 yards of offense.

If there were any glaring problems with the Bears on Sunday, it definitely was in the secondary.

Tracy Porter got beat a few times trying to man up on Calvin Johnson, so welcome to the club. For the most part, Porter really wasn’t bad. The rest of the secondary was.

Sherrick McManis is a wonderful special teams player who clearly won the nickel cornerback job in training camp, but that has to change after Sunday.

He has struggled since the opener against the Packers, and left Detroit with first-degree burns courtesy of Golden Tate and Lance Moore.

week is Kyle Fuller. He seemed to be settling down a bit after a really rough start in the Bears’ first three losses, but he took a huge step backward Sunday.

Fuller is willing to come up and stick his nose in on the run and bubble screens, but once he has to play on the backpedal or with his back to the quarterback, he’s toast. More than anything, the Bears’ loss was a wakeup call and reminder to Bears fans about where their beloved really stand in the NFL’s current pecking order.

The Bears went into Detroit three-point underdogs and got beat by three points. None of the reasons for Bears fans optimism coming off the two-game winning streak changed.

Cutler was very good again, Alshon Jeffery made a really strong return from his hamstring injury, the young offensive linemen certainly weren’t the reason the Bears lost and Eddie Goldman, Christian Jones and Adrian Amos grew up a little more at Ford Field.

On the flip side, the Bears still need another receiver, probably two, and they still have a clear talent deficit on all three levels of the defense, most glaringly at inside linebacker and in the secondary.

Much of that won’t change until the offseason, but right now, this team is learning and competing, and after last year, that’s not all bad.

Wild, undisciplined game:

Both teams traded turns turning the ball over, dropping passes and committing bad penalties. Pernell McPhee’s roughing-the-passer penalty with just 34 seconds remaining got the Lions to the six-yard line with a first-and-goal, and Matthew Stafford hit Calvin Johnson for the go-ahead touchdown on the next play.

The Bears finished with nine penalties for 76 yards.

Red-zone woes: The Bears had little problem moving the ball against the Lions’ defense through the air, taking advantage of big plays when Jay Cutler moved his feet and receivers got open behind Detroit’s defense, but they couldn’t capitalize as often as they’d like. Poor run-blocking, bad penalties and poor throws by Cutler - including an interception in the end zone to begin the third quarter - kept points off the board.

Coverage issues remain:

NFL director of officiating Dean Blandino declared that Tate established possession because he wasn’t going to the ground.

Wideouts return: Alshon Jeffery played for the first time since Week One, returning from a four-week absence due to a hamstring injury. He did have two penalties, but also eight catches for 147 yards, including a spectacular touchdown.

News and notes: Jarvis Jenkins was evaluated for a concussion at halftime but returned. ... The two newest Bears, defensive lineman Bruce Gaston and running back Antone Smith, were both inactive. … Will Sutton (elbow) played for the first time since Week Three. …

Jonathan Anderson and LaRoy Reynolds rotated at inside linebacker, replacing Shea McClellin (knee). Anderson was next to Christian Jones when the Bears were in the nickel and Reynolds played in the base defense.

Watching the Lions’ 37-34 overtime win over the Bears on Sunday was absolutely akin to kissing your sister.

In a game neither team deserved to win, the tallest little person prevailed.

The unknown going in was whether or not the Lions would show up at all at 0-5, and the answer turned out to be they would come and go during various points in the game.

What Detroit did well enough to win was limit the Bears to points on only three of their eight visits inside the red zone, and the team that came in dead last in the NFL in rushing, ground out 155 yards on 32 carries against the Bears, a 4.8 average.

A lot of Bears did a lot of good things on offense against the Lions as the Bears piled up 444 yards and 24 first downs, but almost every one of them made key mistakes, as well.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was very, very good again (26 for 41, 353 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, and two runs for 12 yards), but his interception in the end zone on the Bears’ opening drive of the second half, while trailing 21-13, was extremely costly.

Tight end Martellus Bennett and receiver Marquess Wilson continue to make big plays here and there, but each had costly drops on what should have been sure catches.

The Bears’ rebuilt offensive line did a nice job protecting Cutler, but the running game was limited to 91 yards on 31 rushes, a 2.9 average, mainly because of the Lions’ defensive

Last week, we looked at when declarer should ruff or overruff, or discard when he could ruff or overruff.

Over the next two weeks, let’s give the defenders a chance to shine in these areas.

First of all, let’s review a defensive technique that should be automatic for any pair out of beginner classes for, say, a year. South is in four spades.

West leads his singleton diamond.

Surprise, surprise, East wins the trick and returns a diamond for West to ruff.

What should West lead next?

In the auction, North is right to make a game-invitational, not game-forcing, response. His hand has the bad 4-3-3-3 hand distribution and eight losers (three spades, one heart, three diamonds and one club), which makes it textbook for a game-invitational sequence. South probably considered slam, but decided that keeping the opponents in the dark was a better idea.

At trick three, West wants to get his partner back on lead so that he can receive a second diamond ruff to defeat the contract. But should he shift to a heart or a club?

As you surely know, East’s diamond return at trick two gives the answer.

His card transmits a suit-preference signal. If East has the heart ace, he leads back his highest-remaining diamond; here, the nine. Or, if East holds the club ace, he returns his lowest diamond; here, the three.

Now it should be the work of a moment for West to make the correct shift and to receive the lethal second ruff. Finally, if East does not know which suit he wants led back, he returns his middle diamond at trick two ... and confuses and annoys West!

Amazing knee joint anatomy allows complex movement Dear Dr. K: I’ve been having a lot of knee pain. Would you describe the anatomy of the knee so I can understand more when I see my doctor about it?

Dear Reader: Joints are places where two or more bones meet, to allow a part of your body to move.

And the knee joint is a remarkable structure. It is a complicated network of bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

These structures, working together, allow us to walk, kick, squat and stand back up.

I’ve put an illustration of the knee on my website, www. askdoctork.com.

It will help you to look at this illustration as I describe

Three bones meet at the knee joint: the thigh bone (femur), the shin bone (tibia) and the kneecap (patella). All of your weight above your knee is supported by it. That means your knee joints have to be strong as well as flexible.

At its lower end, the femur divides into two rounded knobs called condyles. The lower end largely rests on the top end of the main bone of the lower leg, the tibia. The top of the tibia is rather flat with

a middle bump. That bump fits in the space between the two rounded condyles. The mismatch in shape – like two doorknobs balanced on an uneven plate – allows for complex movements. But it makes the knee potentially unstable.

The patella is a small, flat bone that floats in front of the knee joint. It protects other knee structures, and applies leverage to help straighten the joint.

Separating the bones of the knee are two rubbery, tough, elastic cartilage pads known as menisci. They curve around each side of the top of the tibia, serving as shock absorbers. They help the bones fit together.

Muscles in your calf and

thighs power the movement of your legs. Tendons connect muscle to bone and transfer muscle power to the bone to create movement. For example, a tendon connects the quadriceps muscle in your thigh to the patella, providing the power to extend your leg.

These movements change the position of the knees.

They also affect the parts of the knee joint that bear most of your body weight.

The several different ligaments of the knee help keep it stable.

Ligaments are tough, fibrous tissues that connect bones or cartilage at a joint.

They allow movement within a safe range. If you’re a sports fan, you’ve probably heard of

the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL. A tear of this ligament is a common sports injury. The ACL connects the femur to the tibia in the center of the knee.

Synovial fluid lubricates the knee joint. It minimizes friction as the joint components rub against one another.

It also forms a seal that allows neighboring bones to slide against each other without pulling apart.

I hope this information will help you when your doctor examines your knee and explains what’s wrong.
