Becca leaves behind a five-yearold daughter; Bianca Hubbard of Aurora; husband, Archie Sanders of Aurora; father, Thorston Smith of Montgomery; and mother, Nancy Hilgen of Morris; a sister, Cindy Smith of Aurora; and three brothers, Thorston, Jr. of Morris, Aaron Bruce and Brian Smith, both of Montgomery; and nieces and nephews, who are all missing

her dearly.

She was a good mother, with a kind and caring heart. “You are finally at peace my beautiful daughter.”

Becca was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Ronald and Juanita Waycaster, and her uncle Ronald Waycaster.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street, Morris. A Memorial Service will follow at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home officiated by clergy from Minooka Bible Church. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Memorials in Becca’s name may be made to an education fund set up for Bianca Hubbard.

Morris man arrested for burglary in Joliet Township

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A Morris man allegedly stole a truck from his former employer to burglarize a scrapm yard early Thursday.

Though deputies found the vehicle stuck in the mud on the property, it was the owner’s dog that later discovered Jaime A. Canchola, 39, hiding inside, Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

At 4 a.m. an employee arriving at All-American Recycling, 2285 New Lenox Road, noticed a window pane had been broken out of the office, according to Hoffmeyer.

“Three garbage cans filled with copper and other scrap had been moved around,” Hoffmeyer said. Police were

called and reviewed surveillance video that allegedly showed a man come into the scrap yard with a Chevrolet truck, which remained stuck in a muddy area.

Hoffmeyer said the truck had been reported stolen by Starcon International, a mechanical contracting company. Hoffmeyer said the truck was taken from a work site at the Citgo refinery in Lemont.

“Before the truck was going to be towed away, the owner took the guard dog for a walk around the property and the dog found Canchola was still inside the truck,” Hoffmeyer said.

Canchola was arrested on charges of burglary and auto theft. Police reports indicate he is a former Starcon employee who was fired a year ago.

Armstrong, a 15-year-old student at Coal City High School, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair for mobility, so she didn’t think she would be able to attend dance class like her friends.

That changed this summer. Pam’s Academy of Dance opened its first session of dance class for people with special needs at its Morris location in cooperation with Special Connections of Grundy County.

“I like dancing, I love it,” Armstrong said outside the dance studio Thursday night as she waited for class to begin. “I love music.”

She said she likes attending dance class and loves learning to dance to One Direction and

Special Connections is a nonprofit organization with a mission to connect people with disabilities to their community through social interactions, education, recreational opportunities and shared information.

On Thursday night after warming up, the students quickly went into the line dance they’ve been working on for the last few weeks.

The current class is offered to anyone age 12 and older and goes for six weeks. After a break, another six-week class will be offered.

Jennifer Price, Special Connections board president, said the special needs community in Grundy County has a great love of music and dance and she thinks the class is a great addition.

“I’ve been to dance competitions with my daughter and saw they have competition for special needs dancers and I brought it up to Pam, who offered her facility,” Price said.

Annual growth conference focuses on future jobs

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County’s manufacturing, agriculture, logistics and health care industries are projected to expand in coming years, remaining the prominent areas of employment for local workers.

Growing a workforce that is qualified to fill those future positions is important to community leaders, which is why several of them attended Friday afternoon’s ninth annual Grundy County Growth Conference themed “Using a Collective Impact to Grow a Local Workforce.”

Speakers at the conference focused on the role of education in equipping residents with the skills needed to navigate Grundy County’s growing job landscape.

“We’ve known that we have a retiring workforce, and we know that jobs are changing,” said Julie Buck, executive director of the Grundy County Community Foundation, which hosts the annual conference.

“We want to make sure our workforce is trained on the jobs available here in Grundy County.”

According to the executive director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, Jim Applegate, Illinois needs to remodel its education system so that students from all population groups and socioeconomic backgrounds have a chance at

Ensuring all students have a chance to receive the training they need is crucial to building a workforce compatible with Grundy County’s job market.

Applegate encouraged schools to offer more coordinated and specialized training opportunities to its students so they are better equipped to have, and complete, a post-secondary education.

The Grundy Area Vocational Center has put Grundy County “on the map” as being one of the only programs in Illinois to

offer high school students their American Welding Society certificates, said Cindy Tomei, president of the Valley Industrial Association.

Tomei said manufacturing and logistics companies are looking for workers with training and education that goes beyond high school.

“I think that’s been a misnomer that you don’t need a lot of education to work a manufacturing job,” Tomei said. “It takes much more than a high school diploma.”

Minooka school board tain e R approves price change Driver’s ed to cost more

Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Driver’s education fees have increased by $50 at Minooka Community High School.

The action was approved Thursday by the school board.

The previous $125 fee was not in line with fees of neighboring districts, Director of Business and Finance John Bryk told board members. The average is closer to $260, he said, and raising Minooka’s to $175 is a little closer to a comparable charge.

“It’s quite the bargain here in our school district to take Driver’s ed,” Bryk said.

With about 420 students taking the class each year, the district will gain an additional $21,000 annually – dollars that go directly into the general fund, helping the financially strapped district.

Driver’s ed is a year-round program at the high school.

Also this week, Superintendent Jim Blanche told board members about a technology audit recently conducted at South Campus.

“The issue has been there a long time,” Blanche said after the meeting. “You can be on and you get knocked off.”

The district’s technology staff has not had much success dealing with the problem of Internet connectivity.

Blanche said it was a situation for a computer engineer, and the consulting firm was hired to look at the issue “from the ground up.”

The consultant spent time looking at the technology and talking to the staff to get their

Additional charges are $105 an hour for Bobcat usage; $190 per hour for front end loader usage; $120 an hour for the dump truck; and $95 an hour for use of the pickup truck.

Principal Matt Wikoff also introduced the board to some of the schools’ top academic performing seniors. Lily Benig and James Lay are semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program and now are in the running for Merit scholarships.

Emily Knaub, Nolan Murphy, Morgan Rhoades and Doyle Thompson were named commended students by National Merit, and Philip Amos, Julia Goggins and Taneika Warner are outstanding participants in the National Achievement Program.

The board also learned the Marching Indians received their first Overall Grand Champion Band trophy in more than 15 years at last weekend’s Mahomet-Seymour High School Marching Band Invitational. At the competition, the band also earned first place for percussion, first for colorguard and second place for drum majors.

The marching band competes this weekend at the University of Illinois Field Show.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan began his career with the Grundy County Sheriff’s office on July 1st, 1983 and worked as a patrol Deputy for 8 years before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Sheriff Callahan was assigned to the investigation division where he investigated over 500 felonies for the next 12 years, including the most heinous murder case in Grundy County history along with several other homicides. In 1993, he graduated from Northwestern University Police School Staff and Command and has completed over 1500 hours of specialized law enforcement training during his career with the Sheriff’s office. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Xavier University in Chicago, and it was at St. Xavier where Sheriff Callahan met his wife Colleen. They were married in 1985 and have lived in the home they built in Wauponsee township for 24 years. Colleen has taught at Nettle Creek School for 28 years.

“It was an easy decision for me to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office because I was born and raised in Grundy County. I know firsthand what a great community it is to grow up in and reside. I am proud that Colleen and I have dedicated our careers to serving the people and children of Grundy County.”

Sheriff Callahan serves as the coordinator of the Grundy County Crimestoppers program and has for the past 11 years. Sheriff Callahan is the chairman of the 911 executive board and a member of the ETSB board, the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad policy board, the Tri-County Auto Theft Unit board, the Tri-River Police Training Board, Grundy County PADS board, and the Breaking Away board.

Sheriff Callahan worked with the County Board to establish a Merit Commission to ensure that the most qualified candidates are hired for the positions at the Sheriff’s office. In addition, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Explorer program has been established. This program allows young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 to have the opportunity to experience every aspect of the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Callahan has also successfully negotiated two union contracts with MAP Local 372 and Teamsters Local 700. Both contracts were unanimously ratified by the union and the County Board. Sheriff Callahan finished fiscal year 2013 $250,000 under budget and reduced fiscal year 2014’s budget.

“There’s heavy training going on with donning and doffing of protective gear,” said Lisa Lagger, spokeswoman for Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet. “It’s very hands-on for how to manage Ebola patients, specimens, transports and housekeeping.”

Local preparedness

Local hospitals and emergency care centers are screening anyone coming into the hospital by asking them if they have traveled to West African countries recently, and if they have exhibited symptoms of the viral disease.

“We’re all following the same protocol for the past couple of weeks, regularly reviewing CDC guidelines for health care workers,” said Janet Long, spokeswoman for Morris Hospital.

Long said Morris Hospital is in regular contact with the Grundy County Health Department, CDC and Illinois Department of Public Health to make sure the coordination is there in case some-

Local hospitals and health organizations in Grundy and Will counties are preparing – just in case – for an outbreak of Ebola through a series of measures laid out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The 2014 Ebola outbreak has been identified by the CDC as the largest in history.

Ebola is a virus that spreads through direct contact – such as through broken skin or mucous membranes in, for example, the eyes, nose, or mouth – with an infected person’s blood or body fluids (including but not limited to urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk and semen), according to the CDC. The organization reported as of Wednesday there have been 8,997 confirmed cases and 4,493 deaths. The African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have widespread transmission, while cases also have popped up in Nigeria, Spain and three cases in the United States.

Reports of two Dallas health care workers who have been diagnosed with Ebola after treating an infected man at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital have health organizations around the country keen on preventing transmissions of the disease, which is spread through bodily fluids.

White Oak holds Clothesline Across Campus event Friday

nsamuel@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Rows of shirts, pants and other clothing items hung on a rope that covered part of a field Friday in front of White Oak Elementary School.

But, Friday wasn’t laundry day.

Students brought clothes to donate to families in the community as part of the fourth annual Clothesline Across Campus Service Learning Project.

Parent Kari Hofreiter, mother of fifth-grader Brynn, donated six bags of clothes to the project.

“Times are hard, and people don’t have money,” Hofreiter said. “Lots of people have given to me, so I like to do the same.”

First-grade teacher Kelly Auwerda high-fived her students after they finished hanging their donated clothes on a rope.

“It’s a great way to get families and students aware of the project and involved in the community,” Auwerda said.

White Oak usually collects 20 to 30 garbage bags full of clothing each year, with each one weighing 55 gallons.

Even though all students at White Oak participate in the clothesline event by hanging the donated clothes outside, only the fifth-graders come outside at the end of the school day to sort the clothes by size and gender.

District Principal Chris Maier said giving back to the community helps build students into responsible citizens.

“We try to do four service learning projects a year to teach our kids some sort of life lesson,” Maier said. “It gives them a sense of gratitude.”

“The filmmakers allowed the camera to rest on some of these beautiful images,” Atterberry said. “It’s shot by

someone with a fine arts ability – someone who wants to tell the story, but also allows time for the images to steep in your mind.”

“As Goes Janesville” might sound like a Roger Moore film, but Atterberry said its tone is much different than the classic documentary, “Roger and Me.” “The crew goes into the homes and the kitchens and hears families ask, ‘How are we going to manage?’ ” Atterberry said. “Yes, it is a universal story, but one that has been

JOLIET – Gisele Atterberry, professor of fine arts at Joliet Junior College, said she loves blockbuster movies, but small independent – and often overlooked – films offer something unique.

“The stories they tell are so often the primary questions of our own time, much more than in mainstream movies,” Atterberry said. “They connect us in a deeper way to the world we live in.”

Years of attending Roger Ebert’s Film Festival also gave Atterberry a strong sense of what indie films moviegoers enjoy. So last year, JJC brought the film festival experience to Joliet by hosting one of its own, and it’s hosting its second film festival this weekend.

The festival features three films: “The Blues Brothers,” “Everglades of the North” and “As Goes Janesville.” The festival is free, but reservations are encouraged, Atterberry said. The Joliet Junior College Foundation is funding the event, which started Friday and ends today.

In addition to being a fun movie with a rich musical history, Atterberry said “The Blues Brothers” is an excellent example of the many different skills required to make a film, which is especially good for students to know.

“Potentially any of our students could go into filmmaking,” Atterberry said, “from across the campus – speech, music, acting, creative writing, the visual arts, computer usage ...”

The two films showing today are documentaries. “Everglades of the North” is a film about the history and essence of the Grand Kankakee Marsh.

“As Goes Janesville” tells the story of the 2008 closing of a GM plant in Wisconsin and how those affected reinvent their lives.

Atterberry said she knew three minutes into “Everglades of the North” that she wanted to show this film at the festival.

“It’s beautifully filmed and is very rich in history and recording the beauty of the area,”

Atterberry said notion of hosting a film festival began with the remodeling of a section of the college’s K Building.

The former band room was turned into a second, more intimate theater space called the Black Box Theatre, and the faculty thought the space would be perfect for a film festival.

A JJC film festival also is a way to encourage lifelong learning and to reflect the various aspects of the fine arts de-

partment’s offerings, Atterberry said, which include theater, the visual arts, music, speech and interior design.

Guest speakers this year are Tom Desch, one of the producers for “Everglades of the North,” and Leslie Simmer, editorial director at Kartemquin Films and a co-writer of “As Goes Janesville.”

If these aren’t enough reasons to attend a film festival, Atterberry offers another one.

It’s simply more fun to see a movie with others around you.

“You have the reaction of the audience around you ... when people gasp, when people laugh, when people squirm,” Atterberry said.

Festival-goers also can come early to visit the Laura A. Sprague Gallery in the same building, Atterberry said. It will be the last weekend of the “3 Graces Under Pressure” exhibit, with paintings, drawings and sculpture from Illinois artists Margie Glass Sula, Sherri Denault and Patty McWilliams.

MORRIS – A volunteer counselor from the Senior Health Insurance Program is available at Morris Hospital by appointment to provide free health insurance counseling for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers.

A program of the Illinois Department of Aging, SHIP counselors are volunteers who are trained to educate consumers and answer questions about Medicare, Medicare supplements, long-term care insurance and Advantage plans, according to a news release from the hospital. SHIP counselors also can analyze policies.

The open enrollment period for the program is Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 for seniors and disabled people who have a Medicare Drug Plan. The open enrollment period provides an opportunity to change plans without penalty.

“There are several reasons people may want to change their Medicare plan,” Dick Sef-

ton, coordinator of the Morris Hospital-based program, said in the release. “Maybe the current plan is going to be more expensive than another plan in 2014, or the existing plan will no longer cover certain medications next year. Sometimes people are not satisfied with the level of service provided with their existing plan, or they want a plan that offers mail order. There are all kinds of options to consider.”

According to Sefton, Morris Hospital SHIP is not certified to assist individuals under age 65 who are not currently on Medicare with obtaining medical coverage through the Illinois Marketplace. BRIEFS Last Junk in the Trunk sale Sunday in Morris

MORRIS – The last Junk in the Trunk sale of the season will be Sunday.

The Junk in the Trunk is held every third Sunday April through October behind the Wendy’s Restaurant in Morris, 1926 Division St. The sale is basically a garage sale out of your trunk, van, pickup truck, trailer, etc. You bring your own tables and sell your items. A spot is provided for a $10 donation. This is enough for your vehicle and three tables.

Extra spots are also $10.

All donations are used to support local charities such as the Grundy County Historical Society, Hospice, Christian Youth Center, Relay for Life, We Care of Grundy County and others. No refunds are given.

Inclement weather does cancel this event. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with setup beginning at 9 a.m.

ICS holds 10th annual Hunger Walk

MORRIS – Immaculate Conception School and the Immaculate Conception Religious Education Office will again co-sponsor their 10th annual Hunger Walk.

The event will be at 1 p.m.

Nov. 11 at Gebhard Woods in Morris. Participants are asked to seek sponsors for a 4-mile walk along the I&M Canal Tow Path, according to a news release. They may either walk all or part of the distance.

The event begins and ends at Gebhard Woods.

All of the proceeds from the walk will be shared among area food pantries. These include pantries at We Care of Grundy County, Immaculate Conception Parish and the Mazon-Verona-Kinsman Food Pantry. The

income from the walk will help pantries during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

The Hunger Walk is open to both students and adults and is a fine service project for students seeking community service hours. Those interested in participating or in sponsoring a walker should contact the Immaculate Conception School office at 815942-4111 or kdeslaur@ics1.org.

Seneca Club Cafe Sale to be held Oct. 26

SENECA – The Seneca FFA Chapter will be hosting the 57th annual Seneca Club Calf Sale at 2 p.m. Oct. 26.

Walker, defense help Morris to close homecoming victory

roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – On paper, it looked like Sycamore and Morris were evenly matched coming into Friday night’s homecoming football game in Morris.

After a half, there was nothing shown on the field to refute that presumption.

Morris won, 18-15. Before the second half, the Redskins scored on a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs by homecoming king Jake Walker, while

the Morris defense did a stellar job limiting Sycamore star running back Dion Hooker’s rushing attempts.

Morris got the excitement started on special teams, when the Redskins’ Jacob Webb forced a fumble on a Sycamore punt return and teammate Matt Feiden recovered at the Spartan 31. On second-and-10, Morris quarterback Griffin Sobol connected with Tommy Balentine for a 25-yard gain to the Sycamore 6-yard line.

Two plays later, Walker

went over from the 2 to put Morris ahead 6-0. The kick went off the goal post and the score remained 6-0.

The turnover bug then struck Morris, as Walker fumbled and Sycamore’s Brett Weaver recovered at the Redskins’ 28-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Brett Bemis hit Nick Niemann for a 28-yard touchdown pass, and Tyler Maveus’ kick gave Sycamore a 7-6 lead with 7 seconds left in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, Morris took over

at its own 18-yard line following a Sycamore punt. After a false start penalty, Sobol scrambled for a 30-yard gain.

Then on third-and-23, he hit Walker for a 30-yard gain to the Sycamore 40-yard line.

Later in the drive, on thirdand-9 from the Spartans’ 22yard line, Sobol’s pass was tipped by a Sycamore defender, but Morris tight end Chase Hansen grabbed it out of the air at the 2-yard line, setting up Walker’s second touchdown of the night on the next play. The conversion pass

failed, and Morris took a 12-7 lead into halftime.

Morris’ defense limited Hooker to 43 yards on 10 carries in the first half, while Bemis was 4 of 11 for 51 yards and an interception.

The Sycamore defense was equally stingy against the run, as Morris had just 56 rushing yards in the first half, led by 28 from Sobol and 15 from Walker. Sobol was effective through the air, although, completing 9 of 15 for 126 yards and one interception.

The touchdown put Dibble over 200 yards on the evening on only his sixth carry.

On the next possession, Coal City extended its lead to 27-7 on an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown by Brad Littleton. They took that lead into the half and put a damper on Lisle’s halftime senior night festivities.

In the second half, Coal City continued its explosive ways on offense. LISLE – Looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss in the de facto Interstate 8 large division championship game last week against Manteno, Coal City traveled to Benedictine University on Friday to take on the Lisle, where they beat the Lions, 42-7.

With a considerable size advantage up front, it didn’t take long for the Coalers to get back on track.

Lisle took the opening kick and strung together a pair of first downs before their first drive stalled out and the Coalers took over on a punt that pinned them at their own 9-yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, Coal City running back Jack Dibble took a toss 89 yards to begin the scoring for the Coalers.

can Jay Cutler and company do it two weeks in a row against a Dolphins defense that is the best they’ve seen since the 49ers?

In addition to Cutler, the key, of course, is running back Matt Forte, who not only is the Bears’ running game, he’s also the leading pass catcher in the entire NFL with 46 receptions.

It will be the job of the Dolphins’ linebackers to stop him.

Uh huh, that’s Jenkins, Misi, Wheeler and Trusnik.

Jenkins is the key. He is the Dolphins’ strong-side linebacker, leading tackler and, along with Wake, their top big-play guy. He and Forte figure to know each other very well by the final horn Sunday.

Wheeler is Miami’s version of Lance Briggs. He’s very effective on the weak side when healthy, but he’s been a bit nicked up and in and out of the lineup, as has Misi, who starts in the middle.

Enter Trusnik, an eight-

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush year veteran who’s the first guy off the bench when any linebacker goes down. He has been the Dolphins’ second leading tackler this year with the struggles of Wheeler and Misi.

Should Forte and the Dolphins linebackers play to a draw, Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and company will have veterans Cortland Finnegan and Brent Grimes to deal with at cornerback and Reshad Jones and former Lion Louis Delmas at safety.

Finnegan’s best years are behind him, so he works his mouth even more than ever and will do his best to get in Marshall’s head. Watch closely to see whether it’s working.

Wake and Olivier Vernon on the other side are the best

pair of pass rushing ends the Bears have seen to date, and although Jordan Mills will get plenty of help with Wake, that’s another matchup on which the game could turn.

The bad news for the Bears’ defense is quarterback Ryan Tannehill will give them a healthy dose of the kind of read option look they haven’t seen much since Geno Smith.

Although they fared well against the Jets, Smith did throw for more than 300 yards.

The good news is that Tannehill’s extremely inconsistent and not all that well-endowed with weapons.

Miami thought little enough of Lamar Miller at running back to bring in Knowshon Moreno in free agency, but Moreno is done for the year.

Wallace has four touchdowns already, but only 25 catches for 313 yards.

Jarvis Landry is a good-looking rookie wideout.

But because of Tannehill’s inconsistency, he has only 18 receptions for 186 yards and one touchdown. Last year’s top receiver, Brian Hartline, also has struggled early with only 16 receptions, 161 yards and one touchdown.

Miami worked overtime in free agency to upgrade its offensive line, which is close to average. Its key acquisition, Brandon Albert at left tackle, struggled all week with a bum elbow and could be limited.

Finally, there is coach Joe Philibin, who made a couple of questionable decisions on the sideline last week against the Packers. He is very much on the coaching bubble, and we’ll have to see whether he does a better job, particularly with his young quarterback Sunday.

LAKE FOREST – Bears linebacker Lance Briggs and safety Chris Conte did not practice Friday and were ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

Coach Marc Trestman said Briggs’ injury is to his ribs, but that they remain sore enough to keep him out. Conte (shoulder) did some running this week but is not healthy enough to play.

Although Conte has finished only two games this season, this is the first full game he will miss since the 2012 season finale.

Brock Vereen is expected to start for Conte at free safety.

The rookie has received some spot snaps in a few games this

season and said he has gained a lot of confidence over the past month.

“He had a good week of practice. He had a very good week of practice,” Trestman said of Vereen. “He’s communicating better. He’s where he’s supposed to be. He’s done a good job for us on special teams. He did last week. He’ll be part of that rotation, and we’re excited to see him play.

“He’s ready to play. He’s certainly been in some key games this year right at the end where we all know where he’s had to make some plays. So this is just part of his growth. He’s had a

The starter for Briggs at weak-side linebacker will be a game-time decision. Jon Bostic (back) is questionable, but if he is able to play, he could start at the “Will” spot, which would be the third linebacker position for Bostic in his 22 games with the Bears.

Shea McClellin (hand), D.J. Williams (neck), Jermon Bushrod (knee/ankle), Sherrick McManis (quad/knee) and Ahmad Dixon (hamstring) are listed as probable and expected to play, which means the Bears will have McClellin and McManis back for the first time since Week 2. Bushrod and Dixon missed the past two games.

linebacker. We’ll see if the Bears rotate any of last week’s starters – Khaseem Greene, Darryl Sharpton and Christian Jones – based on the flow of the game.

With Bushrod back, Sunday’s game against the Dolphins will feature the Bears’ starting offensive line for the first time since Week 1.

In Miami, the Dolphins listed nickel corner Jimmy Wilson as doubtful. That would be a blow to their secondary, as Wilson is fourth on the defense in snaps and tackles, and has a pass coverage grade of plus-1.9 via Pro Football Focus.

You probably have been hearing about Cameron Wake, Ryan Tannehill and Mike Wallace of the Miami Dolphins all week as the fish (I know, dolphins are actually mammals, but it’s fun calling them the fish) prepare to take on the Bears on Sunday.

They’re the biggest names on a team that continues to struggle for identity in a muddled AFC wild-card picture.

But I suspect Miami’s chances of upsetting the Bears will come down to Jelani Jenkins, Koa Misi, Philip Wheeler and Jason Trusnik.

Who are they, you ask? I’ll get to that in a moment.

The Bears are highly unlikely to lose a shootout with the Dolphins. There is no reason the Miami offense should scare anyone, and the Bears’ defense has been getting a little better every week.

Offensively, we got a glimpse of who the Bears can be last week in Atlanta. But

Educate yourself on what will be on your ballot Sample ballots have been widely disseminated for the Nov. 4 election.

They have been mailed by local county clerk’s offices and appeared in local media outlets. And if you visit the county clerk’s website for Grundy County, you’ll find a plethora of information about what races will be before you when you cast your vote.

But if people go only by the hotly contested races for governor, Congress and the state Legislature – those whose ads dominate the TV screens – they might be surprised at how many other choices they will be asked to make.

For example, did you know that you will be asked to judge some area judges? The ballots in Grundy County have several judges up for retention.

Local propositions also are on the ballot. The Braceville Fire Protection District is asking its residents to issue $600,000 in bonds to build and equip a new fire station and improve the site, while residents in the South Wilmington School District are being asked to increase the maximum annual tax rate for educational purposes and establish it at 2.43 percent.

Before you reach local propositions at the end of the ballot, you must wade through two statewide constitutional amendments (to boost victims’ rights and bolster voting rights) and three advisory questions (minimum wage hike to $10 an hour, birth control insurance coverage guarantee, and a 3 percent increase in the income tax rate for people who make $1 million a year).

All that is above and beyond the normal off-year offices to be decided: U.S. Senate, governor and lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, comptroller, treasurer, U.S. House, state senators and representatives, countywide offices, county board and regional superintendents.

With such a wide array of candidates and issues, we advise voters not to wait until the day they cast their ballot – whether that be on Election Day or through early voting options – to familiarize themselves with the decisions they will be asked to make.

Another place you can turn for information on those candidate is our online Election Central project, at www.morrisdailyherald.com/election-central/. We are going to be running articles about contested races during the next few weeks, and those will be warehoused there.

You’ll also find questionnaires we sent to candidates in contested races there as well. The deadline to get information in was Friday, so we’re updating the site throughout the weekend. You can read, in their own words, why candidates think they are the best person for the office each is seeking.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR REAL FUNDING REFORM WILL HELP ALL SCHOOLS

To the Editor: School funding reform has once again become a hot-button issue throughout the area. I personally served on the Education Funding Advisory Committee (EFAC), which met over the course of a year, meticulously studying the current funding situation our state.

The idea of EFAC was largely inspired by a report from the Senate Republican caucus that showed serious issues with the way our state funds schools. The results of the EFAC meetings showed similar results. The formulas which were designed to “level the playing field” for all districts are in reality creating and worsening existing inequities between schools. This situation has been made much worse because the state has failed to fully fund the formulas in recent years.

There was an agreement among EFAC members that at the conclusion of our meetings, we would hold bipartisan talks to draft legislation to improve the situation. Unfortunately, Democrat leaders decided to take on the process themselves behind closed doors, much like they have been doing with other major legislation, including the state budget.

The result of those one-sided meetings was Senate Bill 16. I voted against this measure in the Senate, because this legislation simply wasn’t ready. There is a lot of talk about “winners and losers” in regards to school funding and especially with SB16. In its current form, the bill simply shifts resources from some districts to others, creating new winners and losers, and new inequities between schools.

But there’s an underlying problem even bigger than SB16. Since Democrats have taken over state government, our schools have seen hundreds of millions in cuts. This is despite taking in over $26 billion in new money through the 2010 income tax hike. Much of the cuts have come through proration, which basically means that schools are only given a percentage of the money they are supposed to receive. This has already meant devastating cuts.

From fiscal year 2012-2014, LaSalle Elementary has lost over $1.6 million due to proration, Ottawa Elementary missed over $1.7 million, for Plano the number is over $2.5 million, and Streator lost over $3.3 million. Statewide our schools are losing $550 million just in the current school year. This is unacceptable.

In addition, our state has repeated-

ly created new unfunded mandates for schools, which means increased costs at the same time that funding is dropping off. For many districts, the only way to keep the doors open is to increase local revenue, which leads to property tax hikes. (It should be noted that SB16, in its current form, does not include any relief from unfunded mandates or property tax increases.) We are all already paying for the effects of proration and new mandates through our tax bills, as well as reduced educational opportunities for our children.

Because Democrat leaders have repeatedly refused to properly fund the existing formulas, all schools are losing. If we want to improve the education system in Illinois, we first have to prioritize our spending to ensure that schools are fully funded.

This would be a win for all of our school districts, regardless of where they lie in this state.

This would represent the proper first step in the process of reforming school funding. We have to create a solid financial foundation before we can completely rewrite the entire system.

In bridge, there is only one trick to winning: You have to find a line of declarer play or defense that works. It does not have to be mathematically very good, but something that succeeds.

However, if you constantly make second-best plays, you will lose in the long run. So try to play accurately.

In this deal, South pushes himself into seven no-trump. What should he do after West leads the heart jack?

North might have rebid two no-trump, but support with support is a reliable policy. And South’s last bid was a slight gamble, but North rated to have decent diamonds for his opening bid when he had only one ace and one king.

South has 13 top tricks: one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and six clubs. But since the diamond suit is blocked, that is true only if he has an entry to reach the diamond ace-queen. Declarer must win the first trick in his hand with the heart ace, cash the diamond king-jack, play a heart to dummy’s king, and discard his spade losers on the diamond ace-queen.

If South wins trick one on the board, he had better hope that West discards a diamond while the clubs are run.

24 Choose toothpaste with fluoride (and don’t forget to floss) Dear Doctor K: I’m confused by the many types of toothpaste on pharmacy shelves.

What should I look for in a toothpaste?

Dear Reader: To prevent cavities and tooth decay, you need to brush away plaque – that sticky, bacteria-laden material that builds up on teeth. It’s best to brush at least twice daily, once after you eat breakfast, and then again before you go to sleep.

When it comes to plaque removal, your toothbrush does most of the heavy lifting. If you were forced to give up either the toothbrush or toothpaste, you’d give up the toothpaste.

Fortunately, it’s easy to have both.

And toothpaste definitely helps, in several ways. It removes stains and leaves your mouth fresher. Commercial toothpastes are a concoction of abrasives, foaming agents, water and binders. Flavor, color and sweeteners are added. They may also contain agents to prevent cavities, combat gum disease, make teeth less sensitive or whiten teeth. Here are some ingredients you may see highlighted on labels: • FLUORIDE. Choose a toothpaste that contains fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay.

• TRICLOSAN. This ingredient helps fight the gum disease known as gingivitis.

It also helps reduce plaque, inflammation and bleeding of the gums.

• ANTI-SENSITIVITY INGREDIENTS. Some toothpastes are designed to reduce sensitivity of teeth to heat and cold. It might take a few weeks of using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before you notice any improvement. You can use anti-sensitivity toothpastes that also contain fluoride as your everyday toothpaste.

• ABRASIVES. When choosing a toothpaste, consider its level of abrasiveness. A little bit of roughness helps remove plaque and stains, but too much can strip away tooth enamel. Using a toothpaste

If you don’t smoke and have few stains, a low-abrasive toothpaste is best for you. The American Dental Association (ADA) issues its Seal of Acceptance only for toothpastes that are mild to moderately abrasive. So look for the ADA seal of approval on the tube.

• WHITENERS. Toothpaste makers have bombarded the marketplace with products that claim to whiten teeth. All whitening toothpastes contain mild abrasives that help remove surface stains. Whitening toothpastes that display the ADA Seal of Acceptance also have chemical or polishing agents that boost their stain-removal power.

A patient asked me once, “I know you’re not supposed to swallow the toothpaste, but is there any danger if you do?” Swallowing small amounts of toothpaste, which occasionally happens with all of us, carries no risk. However, some people apparently deliberately swallow larger amounts of toothpaste (don’t ask me why). That can cause problems. The fluoride and the triclosan, in large amounts, can cause abdominal symptoms and even more serious problems, including seizures.

Finally, don’t forget to floss regularly. No matter how thoroughly you brush your teeth, it’s impossible to reach the plaque and food debris that lodge under the gum line between your teeth. Your teeth and gums will thank you.
