Born: May 11, 1928; in Fisher, IL Died: Oct. 15, 2014; in Diamond, IL May Louise Kay, “Louise”, age 86, of Diamond, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014, in her home, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Louise was born May 11, 1928, in Fisher, Illinois, to Otis Earl and Ruby Edith (Barrett) Carpenter.

She was an active member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #544 affiliated with the Moose Lodge #967 of Morris, since 1970, becoming a member of the College of Regents and Star Recorder degree. Louise was a member of the Academy of Friendship and a charter member of Northwest Fellowship Council of the Loyal Order of the Moose. She was an avid crafter, mainly working in crochet, and her favorite things to make were pineapple doilies.

Survivors include her daughter, Diana Wilson; step-daughter, Bette (Don) Farmer; grandchildren, Tammie (Kevin) Johnson and Kenneth Bannon III; great grandson, Kenneth Bannon IV; sister, Dorothy Thomas; sister-in-law, Anna (Keller) Stevens; special niece, Della Hudson; special life-long friends, Susan Leek and Sara Vilt; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Theresa “Ellouise” Tijan; brothers, O.G. Carpenter, William Carpenter and Harlan Carpenter; sisters, Vera Marcellus, Maysel Aldrich, Ruby

Carpenter and Treva Carpenter; and step-children, William Kay, Donna Richardson and Maryanne Finney. A visitation will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014, at Reeves Funeral Home in Coal City, from 5:00 p.m. until the time of funeral service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will follow on Saturday, October 18, at 2:00 p.m., in Mount Hope Cemetery, Foosland, Illinois.

Born: Nov. 7, 1924; in Luling, TX Died: Oct. 14, 2014; in Morris, IL Marion Wacks Sorensen passed away peacefully on October 14, 2014, at Park Pointe Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Morris.

until her retirement at the age of 72, in 1997. Upon retiring, Marion was honored with the Outstanding Fulltime Faculty Member award.

Marion was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, The Daughters of the American Revolution and a volunteer for the Morris Hospital Auxiliary. She loved to travel the world, read, dance, and most of all, spend time with her family and friends.

Marion is survived by her daughter, Jocelyn (Greg) Christensen; her son, Daniel (Mary) Wacks; grandsons, Kevin (Sarah) and Keith Christensen, Joel and Seth Wacks; great-granddaughter, Hailey Christensen; and her beloved partner, Rocco Zazarra; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Following her desire to continue to contribute to the teaching world, Marion requested her body be donated to medical science. Her family will hold a memorial service honoring her life at a later date.

Donations may be made in Marion’s name to the Morris Public Library, the First United Methodist Church of Morris, or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Marion was born in Luling, Texas, on November 7, 1924. She was the daughter of L.H. and Lois Bridges.

She was educated in Luling and graduated from Luling High School as valedictorian of her class. She received her Bachelor of Journalism and Masters of Journalism from the University of Texas, Austin. She received a Masters of Science in Counseling from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb and completed many courses towards her Ph.D., before deciding that spending time with her grandchildren was a lot more fun.

Marion married Norman Wacks in June of 1952, and they spent many happy years together living in Texas, Oklahoma, and Illinois before his death in August of 1975.

She married John Sorensen in May of 1982, and they made their home together in Shorewood, until his death in January of 1996. Marion was blessed once again to find a wonderful partner in Rocco Zazzara, and she spent her final years between Florida and Illinois before moving to Park Pointe in 2012.

Marion spent her early career following her father’s footsteps into the newspaper industry but found her true passion in teaching, as a Professor of Journalism and English at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas. After many years as a stay-at-home-mom/Campfire Girl Leader/Boy Scout Leader, Marion re-entered the world of teaching as an English and Journalism teacher, EmHi sponsor and counselor at Morris Community High School from 1973 to 1978. In 1978, she joined the faculty of Joliet Junior College as the Journalism and English instructor, sponsor of the college paper (The Blazer), and Guidance Counselor

Students work with family, peers to build homemade catapults

nsamuel@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Spectators gasped in unison Thursday as Nicholas Latta and Nicholas Leasure launched a cupcake 107½ feet from their homemade catapult, making them both the winners of the fourth annual Cupcake Launch Competition at Coal City Intermediate School.

Both participants stood next to their catapult, the “Cupcake Hunter,” and smiled as they received their plaques.

“I was surprised how far it launched,” said Latta, 10.

He said it took only one day to put the catapult together.

His dad, Mike, worked with Latta and Leasure to build it.

“When we shot it at home, it only went 50 feet,” said Mike Latta of Diamond.

Twenty-four launchers participated in this year’s competition as part of a fifth-grade science class.

Aidan Kostbade said it took him and his friends three days to build their catapult machine.

The first day was for researching design ideas, the second day was for building and the third day was for painting.

“I knew right away who I would pick to be my partners.

We’re all friends,” Kostbade said.

His dad, Michael, said he knew his son would have fun building the catapult because he got to work with his friends.

“It teaches persistence and diligence, to start and complete a task and see the results of your efforts,” Michael Kostbade said.

The launchers at the competition, who are fifth-graders, were judged in three rounds on the distance of their cupcake launch. Winners got a plaque and all participants received a certificate.

Principal Tracy Carlson said she sees a lot of middle

school students coming back to this event saying to launchers “mine was farther when I did it.”

“It allows students to create without rules, limits or grades,” Carlson said. “They get to do it with their family and peers and have fun.”

Neil Nicholson, fifth-grade science teacher and organizer of the event, said the competition goes along with the science and engineering standard.

“The biggest thing for me is bringing in people in the community,” Nicholson said.

“They all start yelling when the cupcakes launch.”

Nicholson said there’s no limit to how many people can be in each launch group and that kids can work with their parents or grandparents.

Jennifer Rink, another organizer and teacher, said it’s important for kids this age to enjoy science and embrace it.

Launcher Jace Shaw, 10, who catapulted a cupcake from his launcher by pressing a button, said it took him and his friend a week and a half to build the catapult.

“The funnest part was seeing all the other ones and how they built theirs and seeing how far ours went,” Shaw said.

Remembering Rebecca Smith Morris family recalls woman who died of heroin overdose

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Rebecca Smith was 11 months clean when she was released from prison last Friday.

Her first three nights back, Rebecca, 25, was surrounded by family – her mother, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews and 5-year-old daughter welcomed her home in Morris.

She laughed a lot, had a sleepover with her nephews and showed no signs of a relapse. She looked good, remembered Rebecca’s sister-inlaw, Ashley Flatness.

On her fourth day home, Rebecca was found sitting unresponsive.

The coroner ruled her death a heroin overdose, making her the third Grundy County resident to die of a heroin overdose in 2014.

“She was around family and kids every day, except one day, and that’s all it took. That was it,” Flatness said.

Now, Rebecca’s loved ones

are speaking out about her death, using her story to help raise awareness about the heroin problem plaguing the area.

According to the Center For Disease Control, the rate of deaths caused by heroin overdoses doubled in 28 states between 2010 and 2012. The agency released a report two weeks ago detailing the rise in heroin deaths, a drug that has flooded the illegal drug market, according to the CDC. The CDC reports that heroin is often much cheaper than other prescription opiods, making it an increasingly popular street drug.

Rebecca’s mother Nancy Hilgen said she wants parents to realize that heroin is not only in Chicago, but readily available in Grundy County.

“I know it’s a small town, but that doesn’t matter. It’s everywhere,” Hilgen said.

“Something needs to be done, and I don’t know what that is, but it’s killing our kids.

doesn’t have a mommy.”

Her death was a shock, but not necessarily a surprise to Hilgen.

Hilgen watched her daughter struggle with drug addiction since Rebecca was in her teenage years, beginning with crack and cocaine and then transitioning to heroin more recently.

Rebecca’s drug problems stemmed, in part, from her battle with bi-polar disorder which could make her very depressed, Hilgen said.

Up until her death, Rebecca did not like to admit that she was using heroin and denied

having a problem.

“She was ashamed of her heroin addiction. I didn’t even know about it until she was arrested,” Hilgen said. “I had no idea she was using heroin.”

While behind bars, Rebecca graduated from the court-mandated drug rehabilitation program, her mom said. Her graduation from the program fell on the same day she was released from prison.

Rebecca’s immediate relapse after nearly a year of staying clean speaks to just how addictive heroin can be, Hilgen said.

The family encouraged oth-

ers dealing with the addiction of a loved one to remain vigilant and supportive, and encourage the drug abuser to get help from whatever resources they can find.

In the end, Hilgen said it is up to the user to break their addiction, but they should not be alone in their struggle.

“It’s ugly. It’s a very ugly thing to go through. It tears you up inside. It turns your stomach. You go through all of these emotions,” Flatness said. “But what else can you do but be there? You love that person, and it’s important to be patient.”

Committee discusses financial possibilities for District 54

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Elementary School District 54 formed a Citizen’s Financial Advisory Committee last spring to analyze, evaluate and update a financial report to guide the district.

The original report was made in 2005 by an advisory committee formed in 2004 after Midwest Generation closed causing, a 50 percent revenue loss for the district.

This had a dramatic effect on the district, Superintendent Teri Shaw said. That report guided the district for the past decade.

The district wanted to use this tool again to take a look at its financial options as officials finish four years of declining equalized assessed

valuation, face state revenue being prorated and coming on the impending general obligation bonds, which will be levied in December 2018.

Decreasing EAVs mean a drop in property tax revenue coming into the district.

“The first report was helpful to me as a school board member and as a superintendent,” Shaw said. “I thought it would be good to put it back on the table.”

The committee had its final meeting Wednesday night where a lengthy meeting was held to put together a list of suggestions, which will be presented to the Board of Education at the regular November board meeting.

One of the major suggestions the committee discussed is refinancing the school’s bonds used to construct White

Oak Elementary School in 2000.

Arthur Hornsby, a member of the committee, said Thursday he believes refinancing the bonds at today’s low rates will help the board.

The district is currently paying 8 percent interest, and he believes it may be able to refinance them at today’s low rates of 3 or 4 percent.

Shaw said the options facing the board in regards to the general obligation bonds is a no-win situation.

If board members allow the bonds to go forward, they will have to increase taxes via a levy. If they extend it longer, they will be able to keep the levy down, but the cost of interest could be higher depending upon when they refinance them, and that is an unknown number at this time.

Grundy County indictments announced by state’s attorney MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland announced that on Oct. 15 the grand jury has returned the following indictments. The public is advised a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

• Kenneth Benson Sr., 40, of Morris, was indicted for possession of cannabis with the intent to deliver, a Class 2 felony; possession of more than 500 grams but less than 2,000 grams of cannabis, a class 3 felony; possession of cannabis sativa plants, a Class 4 felony; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

• Leah Breyne, 19, of Seneca, was indicted for possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony.

• Kay Hexdall, 50, of Morris, was indicted in two counts for aggravated driving while under

the influence, both Class 2 felonies; and two counts of aggravated driving while under the influence, both Class 4 felonies.

• Tabitha Lobb, 27, of Morris, was indicted for retail theft, a Class 4 felony.

• Sergio Rivera-Valenzuela, 30, of Morris, was indicted for driving while license revoked, a Class 4 felony.

• Matt Thomas, 34, of Crest Hill, was indicted for possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony.

• Travis Wheeler, 34, of Bloomington, was indicted for theft of more than $500, a Class 3 felony.

• Charles Williams, 25, of Verona, was indicted in two counts for aggravated driving while under the influence, both Class 2 felonies; two counts for aggravated driving while under the influence, both Class 4 felonies; and for driving while license revoked, a Class 4 felony.

He worked as a Kendall County sheriff’s deputy until he resigned to accept the legislative seat.

Once aspiring to become a pastor along with his wife, Anthony is pursuing his master’s degree from the Christian Bible College Seminary.

Working in law enforcement and schools, Anthony said his focus is on reforming the education system.

“I have four kids whose entire lives are dependant on the decisions we make today,” Anthony said.

From 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Grundy County Administration Building, 1320 Union St., Morris, a high dose flu clinic will be held for those ages 65 and older. Also Quadrivalent flu for 19 to 64 years of age.

Medicare Part B will pay for high dose flu or cost without Medicare is $50. Quadrivalent

flu vaccine is $35 or Medicaid will be billed.

For Medicaid, if you have a copay that would be payable at time of vaccine administration.

From 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday a clinic will be held in the Nursing Clinic at the administration center for children ages 6 months through 18 years old.

The two candidates vying for the 75th District seat in the Illinois House of Representatives come from very different backgrounds.

Republican incumbent Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, was appointed to the seat after the resignation last year of Rep. Pam Roth, R-Morris.

He was the first black Republican in the House in 30 years.

Anthony’s Democratic challenger, Martha Shugart, is a first-time challenger and former city alderwoman from Morris vying to be the first nurse elected to the Illinois House.

He also wants to focus on improving Illinois’ job climate and protecting the Second Amendment, touting support for open carry in Illinois.

“It’s sickening we’re losing some of our best and brightest to states like Iowa, Indiana and Kentucky,” he said.

Two of Anthony’s bills were passed in the short time he has been in office: One helped underage girls rescued from trafficking to remove tattoos identifying them as someone’s property.

Harlem Wizards will play District 54 staff in fundraiser If you go

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Morris Elementary School District 54 teachers will face off against the Harlem Wizards on Monday night in a basketball game where the community is encouraged to come watch.

The District 54 PTO has brought the entertaining basketball team to Morris as its fundraiser again this year to raise money for school needs, PTO Treasurer Jill Mills said.

“Last year was a great event,” she said. “We sold

The game is at Morris Community High School.

Mills hopes the community comes out to support the PTO again this year, so the group can in turn support the teachers throughout the school year.

In addition to bringing entertainment to the community, Mills said she believes it is a good team leader that brings staff from both White Oak and Shabbona Middle School together.

The Wizards will play the District 54 staff at 7 p.m. Monday at Morris Community High School. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are available

in advance for $10 or can be bought for $12 at the door. Everyone is invited.

During the school day Monday, pep rallies will be held at White Oak, Shabbona and Saratoga schools.

Superintendent Teri Shaw said she enjoyed playing in last year’s game, but because of scheduling she will be unable to participate this year as it’s on the same night as the regular board meeting.

“The district appreciates every thing the PTO does,” Shaw said. “I played last year and had fun. The district to-

tally supports the event, and I hope the community comes out to support them.”

According to the Wizards’ website, harlemwizards.com, the team was started in 1962

by New York Sports promoter Howie Davis.

More than 50 years later, the organization is an institution that creates awe-inspiring fundraiser events for schools and nonprofit organizations, according to the website.

Morris High School powderpuff games cut short due to conditions

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Homecoming week’s Powder Puff game at Morris Community High School Wednesday night was cut short because of the conditions of the field, but not before some players suffered injuries.

Principal Kelly Hussey said the field was left muddy and slippery from recent rain.

The mud may have contributed to one senior player dislocating her knee as the junior versus varsity game got under way.

The seniors took the win over the all-girls game.

There were two players taken by ambulance to Morris Hospital from the field. In addition to the knee injury, a junior player showed signs of a concussion.

KEVIN CALLAHAN A lifetime dedicated to keeping the citizens of Grundy County safe Sheriff Kevin Callahan began his career with the Grundy County Sheriff’s office on July 1st, 1983 and worked as a patrol Deputy for 8 years before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Sheriff Callahan was assigned to the investigation division where he investigated over 500 felonies for the next 12 years, including the most heinous murder case in Grundy County history along with several other homicides. In 1993, he graduated from Northwestern University Police School Staff and Command and has completed over 1500 hours of specialized law enforcement training during his career with the Sheriff’s office. In December of 2004, Sheriff Callahan was appointed Chief Deputy where he oversaw the day to day law enforcement operations of the Sheriff’s office for the next 8 years, until he was appointed sheriff in 2013.

Sheriff Callahan was born and raised in Morris and attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and Morris Community High School graduating with the class of 1978. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Xavier University in Chicago, and it was at St. Xavier where Sheriff Callahan met his wife Colleen. They were married in 1985 and have lived in the home they built in Wauponsee township for 24 years. Colleen has taught at Nettle Creek School for 28 years.

“It was an easy decision for me to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office because I was born and raised in Grundy County. I know firsthand what a great community it is to grow up in and reside. I am proud that Colleen and I have dedicated our careers to serving the people and children of Grundy County.”

Sheriff Callahan serves as the coordinator of the Grundy County Crimestoppers program and has for the past 11 years. Sheriff Callahan is the chairman of the 911 executive board and a member of the ETSB board, the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad policy board, the Tri-County Auto Theft Unit board, the Tri-River Police Training Board, Grundy County PADS board, and the Breaking Away board.

Sheriff Callahan worked with the County Board to establish a Merit Commission to ensure that the most qualified candidates are hired for the positions at the Sheriff’s office. In addition, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Explorer program has been established. This program allows young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 to have the opportunity to experience every aspect of the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Callahan has also successfully negotiated two union contracts with MAP Local 372 and Teamsters Local 700. Both contracts were unanimously ratified by the union and the County Board. Sheriff Callahan finished fiscal year 2013 $250,000 under budget and reduced fiscal year 2014’s budget.

“I have dedicated the past 31 years of my life working in the Sheriff’s office in many different capacities. For 8 of those years, I held the position of Chief Deputy, and worked to build a professional law enforcement agency that every resident of Grundy County can be proud of. Jennifer Marie Tessone (nee Krupske), age 43, of Morris, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, October 16, 2014, after a courageous battle against cancer. Born September 21, 1971, in Hazelcrest, Illinois, she was raised in Lockport, Illinois, a graduate of Lockport Township High School.

Beloved wife of Joseph “Joe” Tessone; loving and devoted mother of Amanda, Joey, Jenna and Amber Tessone; cherished daughter of Patricia and Jerome Krupske; dearest sister of Bobby (Jennifer) Krupske, Stevie (Sharon) Krupske, Debbie (Randy) Little and Sharon Krupske. OPINION IT’S TIME FOR MORRIS TO CHANGE ITS MASCOT To the Editor:

I just read about your towns’ mascot controversy in the Tribune.

My town, Chatham, about five miles south of Springfield, used to have Redskins as the school mascot; it was changed 15 years ago.

I know that you don’t want outsiders telling you what to do, I didn’t, but as somebody who has been through this let me just say that the mascot will forever be a distraction to your schools and community until it is changed.

Just bite the proverbial bullet and make the change. How we did it was we had the students make nominations, the school board picked five, then the students voted on their favorite (we went with “Titans”). It will take a few years but the Redskins memory will fade and your school will identify with whichever mascot you choose.

When the change was being made I was in favor of keeping the Redskins name, now I wouldn’t dream of going back to it.

Two voices on the opposite sides of the Maynard physician-assisted suicide issue As millions of people now know, Brittany Maynard’s husband, Dan Diaz, will celebrate his birthday on Oct. 26. They will gather with friends and family and then, days later, the 29-year-old Maynard plans to take the prescription drugs that will end her life.

The couple cleared legal, professional and financial hurdles to move from California to Oregon, where she is eligible for physician-assisted suicide. The clock was ticking – because of a malignant brain tumor – toward a “nightmare” she did not want her loved ones to have to endure with her.

As a spokesperson for Compassion and Choices, which evolved out of the old Hemlock Society, she shared the details of her diagnosis and choice at TheBrittanyFund.org and

“Now that I’ve had the prescription filled and it’s in my possession, I have experienced a tremendous sense of relief. ... It has given me a sense of peace during a tumultuous time that otherwise would be dominated by fear, uncertainty and pain,” she wrote in a CNN.com essay.

With its accompanying video, her message went viral online and in national news. As planned, it inspired renewed public and private debates about the ethics of physician-assisted suicide.

Oregon is one of five U.S. states in which this practice is legal.

Maynard poured out her heart online, and other hurting hearts replied. One letter posted by author Kara Tippetts, a 38-year-old mother of four, sounded many now-familiar themes about medical ethics, but also noted the ultimate debates were, as Maynard stated, about the meaning of life and then “whatever’s next.”

It has been two years since Tippetts was diagnosed with breast cancer, which has since metastasized throughout her body. Early in her online essay – entitled “Dear Brittany: Why We Don’t Have to be so Afraid of Dying and Suffering that We Choose Suicide” – she bluntly noted, “I too am dying.”

Tippetts stressed it was important for Maynard and others to share the details of their decisions, in Oregon and wherever physician-as-

sisted suicide is debated.

“It matters, and it is unbelievably important. Thank you. Dear heart, we simply disagree,” wrote Tippetts, author of the book “The Hardest Peace” about her battle with cancer.

“Suffering is not the absence of goodness, it is not the absence of beauty, but perhaps it can be the place where true beauty can be known. ...

“That last kiss, that last warm touch, that last breath, matters – but it was never intended for us to decide when that last breath is breathed.”

From the perspective of faith, Tippetts stressed her final comfort was the fact she was not in control. Thus, she said that she will trust in “knowing Jesus, knowing He understands my hard goodbye, He walks with me in my dying.”

For Maynard, however, the final comfort was in knowing that she would remain in control, as much as was humanly possible under the circumstances.

“I am not suicidal. If I were, I would have consumed that medication long ago,” she wrote. “I do not want to die. But I am dying.

And I want to die on my own terms. ... Who has the right to tell me that I don’t deserve this choice? That I deserve to suffer for weeks or months in tremendous amounts of physical and emotional pain?”

MORRIS – The rain that fell all game Tuesday night was gone, but the remnants remained as Morris took on DeKalb on a muddy Morris Community High School soccer field Thursday in Northern Illinois Big 12 East play.

At press time, with 13:00 to play, DeKalb led Morris, 2-1, as Owen Smith broke a 1-1 tie with 22:41 to go by hitting a shot just under the crossbar from 20 yards out.

In the first half, DeKalb’s Trevor Freeland opened the scoring off an assist from Angel Martinez. Despite numerous opportunities, the Morris offense could not find the back of the net before intermission, and the Barbs took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

With 31:25 to play in the second half, Morris’ Luke Rodriguez had a breakaway opportunity, but was taken down in the goalie box, resulting in a penalty kick. Ricardo Del Toro converted the kick into a goal for the Redskins, hitting the lower right corner, to tie the game at 1.

Morris, which started all seniors on Senior Night, played a strong, aggressive game, especially on defense. The back line of Tyler Pletsch, Kyle Schroeder, Justin Crowther and Jorge Gutierrez turned away the Barbs repeatedly.

Meanwhile, the Redskins’ offense struggled to connect on passes, largely because of players losing their footing on the wet, muddy turf. They were able to get a few shots off, but DeKalb goalkeeper Chris Luna was able to keep them out of the net.

Protecting Cutler top mission against Miami ‘D’

aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears are keenly aware of the multiple challenges a Dolphins defense that ranks in the top 10 against the run and pass will present Sunday.

Coach Marc Trestman and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer pointed out Thursday how Miami has gotten significant pressure on every quarterback it’s faced this season. Thus, the Bears’ main objective is keeping Jay Cutler safe.

“As an overall defense, they’re very physical,” Kromer said. “They hit the

quarterback in every game a bunch of times, and that’s the No. 1 goal in this game is to limit the hits on our quarterback.”

It will take another compete offensive performance to accomplish that goal.

Rather than using a bunch of max protection, a quick-hitting passing attack could be the best solution to counter Cameron Wake, Olivier Vernon and Miami’s potent rush, Kromer said.

“First of all, they play very tight coverage, even in zone,” Trestman said. “And then on third down, because it’s man to man, you’re going to need an extra click. … We’ve just got to take care of the football. But the challenge is getting open quick enough to beat the pass rush …”

Coming off his best game of the season, Cutler was asked what can be taken from Atlanta and used against the Dolphins.

“The momentum carries over,” he said. “That sense of winning carries over. Just like anything else, you get into it, it can be contagious.

We’ve got to keep our feet on the ground as well. There are challenges and there’s things that we want to keep with the winning as well.”

Preserving Forte: For the second week in a row, Matt Forte – who leads the NFL in touches – received a day off Wednesday. Kromer hinted it’s a trend that could continue throughout the season, although Trestman said it’ll be a weekly decision.

On pace for a record workload, Forte said that having off Wednesdays helps, but seven years of experience also aids him in knowing what’s required to replenish his body after so much abuse.

“It takes a while, just trial and error, really,” he said.

Forte discussed how physical therapy, working with a nutritionist and lifting on Mondays to alleviate soreness are all part of a routine he’s fine tuned throughout his career.

Injury update: The Bears welcomed back Jermon Bushrod (knee/ankle) and Jordan Mills (foot) to practice Thursday, putting their starting offensive line together for the first time since Week 1. D.J. Whatever it is, you will need to cover a variety of depths.

The second thing I do is look for the thickest cover I can find.

Maybe there are some huge piles of brush that you know about. Are there any good stands of vegetation left in the lake? What about a group of boat docks that provide lots of places to hide? When conditions are exceptionally tough, like during the turnover, you need to stick with places that always attract and hold fish.

Once you have located this cover, fish the entire water column around it. Maybe the fish are settled clear at the bottom of the lake below a floating dock or they could be suspending in the tops of the weeds just below the surface. During the turnover this vertical positioning can change often.

The last thing that I would look for is any sign of life. I was out on the lake this last weekend and was shocked at how little I saw. I couldn’t find minnows, bluegills or turtles.

Nothing. It was as if the lake had gone dead.

Finally, after about an hour of searching, I located a few bluegills hanging around some downed trees. Sure enough, in a couple casts I got a bite. I had to find where things were happening.

As I wrapped up for the day and headed back to the dock, I deliberately idled in a couple of places that were void of activity just a couple of hours earlier. This time, there were turtles sitting on logs, minnows flitting everywhere, and dozens of bluegills poking those noses into everyone else’s business.

It is a strange time of year to hit the water. The temperature change can make things challenging. Stick with the basics and the dreaded turnover can be beat.

It seems that every morning when I wake up the fog is rolling off of the water. The air temperature fluctuates much more than the surface of the water. At some point, the lake water that sits at the bottom of the water column will be warmer than the water above it. When that happens, the dreaded turnover occurs.

Yes, we are close. This is the time of year when even the best anglers can become so frustrated they give up and head for the woods instead of the waters.

The fall turnover can be devastating to finding and figuring out a pattern.

The turnover means exactly what it sounds like. When the water temperature at the bottom of a lake or pond is now warmer than the water along the surface, the water will actually flip. Warmer water rises and therefore will come to the surface.

Why is this so chaotic? The normal structure of the lake or pond has been altered. There is no longer a clearly defined thermocline and the less oxygenated water from the bottom has now mixed with water that is full of oxygen. The entire stratification of the environment is messed up.

The easiest way to tell if the turnover has happened on your local body of water is to look for debris floating on the surface.

Not just leaves and sticks from normal fall weather, but the black, murky, stuff that has been sitting on the bottom all year. When you witness this type of junk bobbing around, then the turnover has happened. It is important to mention that this phenomenon only happens in waters where there is no current. Rivers and streams are not subject to this massive change like ponds and lakes.

How do we fish during this time and be successful? I won’t lie. It is a challenge. The first thing that I do is stick to a lure that I have confidence in. I like to choose something that can cover the full water column from top-to-bottom without retying. I want something that I can swim, twitch, or even bounce along the floor of the lake. For me, this is a jig. For

This week, we are looking at deals in which declarer must conjure up in his mind’s eye the tricks that he needs to make his contract. He must also remember how the auction proceeded – which is important in this deal – and picture the cards that are played by the opponents.

South is in our favorite contract of three no-trump and West leads the heart eight in answer to his partner’s overcall. How should South plan the play?

South starts with six top tricks: two spades, one heart (given the lead), one diamond and two clubs. He should play on diamonds to establish four tricks there. However, he will probably lose the lead while doing that and must try to make it impossible for the defenders to take one diamond and four hearts.

If declarer plays a low heart or the 10 from dummy at trick one, East will cover cheaply.

Here, South can then get home by ducking the trick, but that would work badly if East had king-third of diamonds. And if South takes the first trick with his king, when West gets in with his diamond king, a second heart lead will kill the contract.

Instead, declarer should play dummy’s heart queen at trick one. This forces East to win with the ace, and he cannot continue hearts without conceding a second trick in the suit.
