MORRIS – A 25-year-old Morris woman died of a heroin overdose Wednesday, and her family has requested officials use her death to raise awareness.

He was born May 22, 1925, and grew up around Morris, lived a number of years in Genoa, IL,

“The death of Rebecca Smith appears to be an overdose of heroin,” Callahan said in a news release.

The Grundy County Coroner’s office has handled three heroin overdoses so far in 2014.

Last year, the office had one heroin overdose.

Most overdoses are not released to the media, Callahan said, but Smith’s family asked her death be reported to raise awareness of heroin and other drug use in the community. The hope is no other parent suffers the loss of a child because of heroin or any other drug.

“Heroin is not just in Will County or Chicago; it is easily accessible right here in Grundy County,” Callahan said in the release.

“As coroner, I appreciate and respect Rebecca’s mother cooperating in this investigation and willingness supporting the release of this information to the public.”

He was preceded in death by his

parents, John and Edna Zingre; wife, Dorothy I (Petersen); daughter, Colleen G; brothers, John (Gerry), Clarence (Muriel), William; and sister, Grace (Guy) Deeks; and many friends.

BRIEF Mazon railroad crossing will close Sunday

MAZON – The Illinois Department of Transportation will close the Route 47 BNSF Railway crossing in Mazon on Sunday for up to 14 days for a crossing rebuild,

according to a news release.

For the closure, Route 47 northbound traffic will proceed north on Interstate 55 to Illinois 113, then west on 113 back to 47, according to the department.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Homecoming week at Morris Community High School is a day shorter because of Columbus Day, but it’s packed full of spirit – or perhaps spirits – with this year’s theme, “A Haunted Homecoming.”

The week is filled with fun dress-up days, such as pajama day, Halloween costume day, and spirit day, as well as activities such as dodge ball, powderpuff football and trick or treating in the hallway.

“Kids love homecoming week. There are more kids in costume than I thought possible,” teacher and homecoming sponsor Barb Rath said Wednesday.

Cash payments to sheriff’s deputies cause concern

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A decades-old practice at the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department came under question this week following Freedom of Information Act requests filed by retired sheriff’s deputy Jeff Cole.

Cole’s documents trace payments made to the sheriff’s department from the Exelon Dresden station, money that is never processed by the Grundy County Treasurer’s office.

The money is used to compensate sheriff’s deputies who provide traffic control for the plant during Dresden’s annual outage, when hundreds of additional employees are brought on to repair and upgrade plant machinery.

The shutdown can cause a “traffic nightmare” around the plant, so for more than 20 years, the sheriff’s department has scheduled deputies to work extra traffic control details to help move traffic, Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said.

Exelon negotiates an hourly rate of pay and writes a check to the Grundy County Sheriff’s office to cover all of the manhours worked.

But documents show that once the sheriff’s department cashes the check, the cash is dispersed among deputies, bypassing the treasurer’s office and not following typical payroll procedure.

Callahan did not deny the cash payments were made, but added that it has been the department’s common practice

for more than 20 years.

Last year was Callahan’s first year facilitating the Exelon traffic control details.

Documents show that in 2013, Exelon wrote Callahan’s office a check for $6,800 to compensate the 10 deputies who worked a total of 68 two-hour details for Dresden. None of that money was reported to the treasurer’s office, documents show.

Cole presented his findings to Grundy County Board member Vicki Geiger, who brought them before the Grundy County Finance Committee on Tuesday night. Geiger questioned the legality and liability of the cash payments.

Taxes, retirement fund payments, insurance and other deductions are not taken out

of the cash, which could pose problems for the county and make bookkeeping inaccurate, Geiger said Wednesday.

“That’s not really how we should be doing business within the county,” Geiger said.

Callahan said he is open to charging the county for the deputies’ overtime pay doing the extra work, if that is how the county wants its compensation handled.

According to the documents for 2013, the most cash a single deputy was paid for the details was $1,400 for working 14 shifts.

“I will gladly look into this, and if there is a better way to do it, with more accountability, I’ll do it,” Callahan said Wednesday. “If it’s something that is not done right, I’m open to changing.”

Cole retired from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department after several years of service. Cole would not say why he chose to bring the documents to public’s attention at this time.

“This is not about me. It’s about open and honest government,” Cole said Wednesday.

Callahan said Cole worked similar cash-paid details during his time with the sheriff’s department.

Exelon Communications Manager Bob Osgood said the plant appreciates the officers who keep everyone safe.

Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman said the payments do not pose an insurance liability to the county, but he was not clear whether the money must go through the treasurer’s office.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For the second consecutive year, Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan bid at the annual 4-H livestock auction to donate meat to We Care of Grundy County.

He was the high bidder on Chaley Varner’s Reserve Champion market heifer, which he bought for $3.25 a pound.

“I didn’t know much about the 4-H auction until I became sheriff. I wasn’t a farm kid, but I’ve learned so much,” he said.

Callahan said he spoke to former 4-H members, now adults, who told him how the animals they auctioned off paid their way through college. He’s happy to help this generation of 4-H members do the same.

When he purchased the prize winning market heifer, he knew he would donate the meat to We Care to support local residents in need. But he had no idea it would bring in more than 600 pounds of ground beef to the agency.

The meat couldn’t have come at a better time, We Care Executive Director Denise Gaska said. The organization is experiencing a meat shortage, cutting in half the amount of meat given to clients.

“With the price of meat rising, grocery stores are doing what they can to reduce the amount of waste, which is where we get our meat from,” Gaska said.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – A Minooka woman was indicted Wednesday on charges of aggravated battery to a child younger than 13 years old, a Class 3 felony.

Tiffany Jasper, also known as Tiffany Rich, allegedly caused bodily harm to a child younger than 13 years old, striking the child on the back and legs with a belt, according to the Grundy County bill of indictment.

Jasper, 34, of Minooka was also charged with one count of domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

the child was Jasper’s family or household member, according to the indictment.

“On Sept. 5, we received a complaint about a child abuse case,” Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer said Wednesday.

“With the assistance of [the Department of Children and Family Services], Minooka Elementary School, the state’s attorney and the Grundy County Advocacy Center, the state’s attorney was able to get a warrant for her arrest.”

No further details about the arrest are being released because the case involves a minor, Meyer said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Jasper was being held in the Grundy County Jail, Meyer said.

Harford, a retired farmer, and his wife, Debra, plan to construct a 100-foot wide, 2,100-foot long strip on their farm near the Mazon River.

The Harfords keep a small, two-seat plane and a gyrocopter on their property, and another small plane is stored at the Morris Municipal Airport, Doug Harford said.

Their home airstrip will be for personal use only and is not approved to host fly-in events, according to the application.

Harford said the strip will support his life-long hobby. He learned to fly in 1980 at a facility in Dwight, and he hasn’t stopped flying since.

“Recently, since I retired, I’ve been doing it a lot more,” he said.

Harford said he and his wife have flown across the country – to the Bahamas and through parts of Central America.

The personal airstrip also will prove useful when Harford and other farmers want to check on crops.

The airstrip zoning was approved by the Grundy County Board Tuesday evening. Harford said he awaits state approval, but anticipates it will come soon.

Sheriff Kevin Callahan began his career with the Grundy County Sheriff’s office on July 1st, 1983 and worked as a patrol Deputy for 8 years before being promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Sheriff Callahan was assigned to the investigation division where he investigated over 500 felonies for the next 12 years, including the most heinous murder case in Grundy County history along with several other homicides. In 1993, he graduated from Northwestern University Police School Staff and Command and has completed over 1500 hours of specialized law enforcement training during his career with the Sheriff’s office. In December of 2004, Sheriff Callahan was appointed Chief Deputy where he oversaw the day to day law enforcement operations of the Sheriff’s office for the next 8 years, until he was appointed sheriff in 2013.

Sheriff Callahan was born and raised in Morris and attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and Morris Community High School graduating with the class of 1978. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Xavier University in Chicago, and it was at St. Xavier where Sheriff Callahan met his wife Colleen. They were married in 1985 and have lived in the home they built in Wauponsee township for 24 years. Colleen has taught at Nettle Creek School for 28 years.

“It was an easy decision for me to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office because I was born and raised in Grundy County. I know firsthand what a great community it is to grow up in and reside. I am proud that Colleen and I have dedicated our careers to serving the people and children of Grundy County.”

Sheriff Callahan serves as the coordinator of the Grundy County Crimestoppers program and has for the past 11 years. Sheriff Callahan is the chairman of the 911 executive board and a member of the ETSB board, the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad policy board, the Tri-County Auto Theft Unit board, the Tri-River Police Training Board, Grundy County PADS board, and the Breaking Away board.

Sheriff Callahan worked with the County Board to establish a Merit Commission to ensure that the most qualified candidates are hired for the positions at the Sheriff’s office. In addition, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Explorer program has been established. This program allows young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20 to have the opportunity to experience every aspect of the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Callahan has also successfully negotiated two union contracts with MAP Local 372 and Teamsters Local 700. Both contracts were unanimously ratified by the union and the County Board. Sheriff Callahan finished fiscal year 2013 $250,000 under budget and reduced fiscal year 2014’s budget.

“I have dedicated the past 31 years of my life working in the Sheriff’s office in many different capacities. For 8 of those years, I held the position of Chief Deputy, and worked to build a professional law enforcement agency that every resident of Grundy County can be proud of. CHANNAHON – People for Channahon Parks Foundation and the Channahon Park District have been working together to develop a new addition to the community – Arroyo Trails, A Discovery Woodlands.

The 75-acre site is nestled in a deep ravine with a winding stream, trails, access to the DuPage River and areas perfect for kids to play and be out in nature, according to a news release from the district.

On Sept. 27, more than 400 children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and more came out to Discovery Day at Arroyo Trails participating in a variety of nature activities and reviewing plans for the Arroyo Trails future development.

The day was highlighted with presentations by Tim Stauft, President and CEO of Aux Sable Liquid Products; David Rumsey of Lost

Prevention Group Leader of ExxonMobil; and Mark Steadham of President and CEO, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers each giving $100,000 checks to Mike Rittof of People for Channahon Parks Foundation president for the development of Arroyo Trails.

A:

These silver fillings are called amalgam fillings. They are composed of mercury, silver, tin, and other various metals.The amalgam fillings itself do not pose any sort of health risks, but do pose a risk on teeth. Amalgams are not chemically bonded onto the tooth and since they are made from metal, they tend to expand and contract inside of the tooth. This constant expansion and contraction causes the amalgam filling to separate microscopically from the tooth creating gaps. In these microscopic gaps, bacteria can enter the tooth causing decay underneath the filling. Because of the nature of the amalgam fillings, sometimes the decay cannot be detected using an x-ray or even seen with the eye. By the time the decay is found using an x-ray, the decay is large and root canal treatment might be necessary. Also, amalgam fillings can cause cracks in teeth, especially the larger the filling and the longer it has been in the mouth. These cracks are often asymptomatic, but over time, the crack becomes larger and the tooth will either fracture or start to hurt. If the tooth fractures, then a crown will be necessary and maybe a root canal.

If the tooth becomes symptomatic, then a root canal and crown may be the only choice to save the tooth. Having the amalgam fillings removed before cracks form is the ideal situation because typically, those amalgam fillings can be replaced with the white composite fillings. Waiting too long to replace amalgam fillings will end up in larger treatment costing more money and possibly more discomfort. adno=0263739

The end of summer often means putting away the flip-flops and digging out the warm sweaters.

It’s also, according to Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, a time when many seek out chemical peels.

“Generally, fall is a big time for chemical peels,” she said. “People want to erase all the damage they did to their skin over the summer months.”

She’s quick to note, however, that peels can be done any time of the year.

So what is a chemical peel exactly? Malinowski said the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, is itself composed of various cells. The procedure works on the top layers of the epidermis.

“A chemical peel is a chemical reaction using different acids to improve the appearance of the skin through regeneration of new

epidermis,” she said. “So essentially the old damaged skin is pushed off and new skin is brought to the surface.”

The benefits of chemical peels depend on the type of peel a client has done. Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center offers several different kinds that are geared toward hyperpigmentation and aging, premature aging, and even a peel to erase the signs of aging in the hands.

“Patients are asked to come in for a consultation with the esthetician first to determine what their concerns are and how the peel with benefit their skin,” Malinowski said.

Depending on the type of peel, it can take between three to five sessions to get results.

Another must-win game for Morris on Homecoming

MORRIS – Last week’s football game against Kaneland was a must-win for Morris, and the Redskins were able to do just that, beating the Knights, 26-21.

But Morris coach Alan Thorson knows there is no time for resting on their laurels for his team, as the situation repeats itself this week with Sycamore coming to town. The Redskins prolonged their playoff hopes for at least another week with the win over Kaneland, but that dreaded No. 4 remains in the loss column, meaning that one more of them means no playoffs.

Sycamore (4-3) is coming off a 14-0 loss to Yorkville last week, a team that Morris lost to, 29-28, in overtime two weeks before in a game they felt they could have won. The week before that, the Spartans beat Kaneland, 14-7. So, it seems the Redskins and Sycamore should be fairly equal.

“We look like two evenly matched teams,” Thorson acknowledged. “But traditionally, this has been one of those games where it doesn’t matter what the records are. A game between Morris and Sycamore is always a tough game.”

Sycamore is coached by Joe Ryan, the brother of Metamora coach Pat Ryan. Since the Redskins beat Metamora, 12-8, in Week 2, Thorson would like nothing better than to go 2-0 against the Ryan family this year. But he knows it won’t be easy.

“Joe is Pat’s brother, so they will be pretty similar in style,” he said. “Sycamore likes to run the ball, and they have a real good back in Dion Hooker.

We can’t let him get loose and break big runs on us, because if you give him room, he will beat you.

“But, they also have a pretty good quarterback [Brett Bemis] and they seem to throw the ball more this year than they have in the past. We have to be able to cover well in the pass game, too.”

did a nice job, too. It was nice to see that group of receivers step up, and we will have to have everyone do it again.”

Do it again has been kind of a motto for the Redskins this week, as their playoff lives are still on the line.

“Both teams are going to want this one bad,” Thorson said. “We get another loss and we don’t make the playoffs. It’s that simple. Sycamore is 4-3, but they have Sterling after us, and that’s not an easy game, either. So they would like to have five wins going into that game.

“We really think things are coming together for us at the right time. The kids are playing with some confidence right now and they know it’s win or be done. We’ve had a good week of practice and, even though homecoming can be a distraction, these kids have done a good job of concentrating on the game Friday and staying focused. We have no reason to hold anything back again.”

Bears’ Vereen gets opportunity to shine

kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Instead of going to Danny McCray when Chris Conte was injured Sunday in Atlanta, the Bears’ staff put Brock Vereen in the game.

Marc Trestman attributed the decision to the ongoing rotation at safety with special teams responsibilities in mind, but it’s clear Vereen has earned more playing time by continuing to understand the defense.

“I’m as comfortable as I’ve ever been back there,” Vereen said after Wednesday’s practice. “Just staying in the playbook, and everything, from a comfort stand point, it’s definitely the best it’s been so far.”

Vereen also is extremely active on special teams and emphasized the importance of being well conditioned to manage both roles, and the

fourth-rounder does revel in getting any opportunity to be on the field.

“At the end of the day, any chance you get to be on the field is something you’ve got to take advantage of,” he said.

Conte did not practice on Wednesday and his status, along with who would potentially start for him alongside Ryan Mundy, is unknown, but Vereen is getting used to the “next man up” mentality and has learned from observing Conte.

“He’s a very intuitive guy,” Vereen said. “He may not be the most vocal guy, but he lets his play do the talking. He’s someone a rookie like me can learn from by just watching.”

Another coverage challenge:

The Bears spent all last week preparing to make sure Devin Hester didn’t make them pay, and now they face the top re-

turning team in the league.

The Dolphins have the best starting position in the NFL at the 26.3-yard line, which happens to be 7.2 yards better than the Bears. Rookie Jarvis Landry is averaging 31.6 yards a return.

“He’s done a heck of a job for them,” special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis said of Landry. “A much different challenge than Devin as far as he’s a stronger guy, one-cut play. He’s really done a good job up to this point so it’s going to be a good challenge for us.

They’ve done a nice job in that phase for sure.”

Vereen also commented on Landry’s strength as something the coverage teams have to be mindful of when corralling Miami’s dangerous returner.

“I think [Landry] doesn’t get enough credit for his strength,” he said. “He’s definitely a guy,

if you don’t bring it, he’s going to break the tackle. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Defending Miller: Knowshon Moreno is out for the year with a torn ACL, but Lamar Miller is averaging 5.2 yards a carry for the Dolphins.

“I think his vision has improved,” Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said. “He’s had a little bit more patience, so he’s seeing some holes open up that early on in his career maybe he missed by being a little too impatient. I think his patience is better now.

“One thing that’s evident, he’s got some speed. He can get out in space. Once he gets out there, at times he can outrun a linebacker or break a tackle and gain some additional yardage for you that’s big.”

The Bears’ run defense is up to 10th in the league, stringing four consecutive weeks of stout

play together, but Miller and Miami’s rushing attack could be the best they’ve faced since the Jets and 49ers.

“First of all they have an excellent scheme. They’re very well coached. [Miller’s] got tremendous speed and vision and he can get to full speed in about a step and a half,” said defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

“So he’s a guy that you can’t give him any room. If you give him room, it’s going to be a long day.”

Bulls’ Noah ready to rebound from surgery, rehab

jcowley@suntimes.com What continued to reveal itself on Wednesday was that the left knee surgery that Joakim Noah had last May that was deemed “minor’’ by the Bulls organization, well, it was obviously a bit more serious than advertised.

The original statement said

that Noah would be rehabbing for “eight to 10 weeks.’’

The All-Star center must have missed that memo.

“I feel like I’m still in a rehab kind of state right now,’’ Noah said, following the afternoon practice at the Advocate Center.

“But I think I’ll be back. I feel better.

“I feel a lot better today than I did two weeks ago. That’s al-

ways a positive. Just making sure the swelling is down. It’s just a lot of rehab and it’s boring, boring stuff. But you just have to stay on top of it, be patient. I’m sure it will come back to where I want it to be.’’

What Noah has going for him was watching teammate, and friend, Derrick Rose go through two season-ending knee surgeries since the 2012 playoffs.

And while his knee problem might not be what Rose’s was, there’s at least a blueprint.

Proposed FCC rule won’t stop bills Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler has said one of his top goals is to promote competition in the industries he regulates.

The agency is now mulling a rule change that could increase competition and choice for TV viewers by helping companies launch pay-TV services that stream channels through the Internet. It’s a good idea, but it wouldn’t do much to counteract the forces driving pay-TV bills into the stratosphere.

At issue is how the FCC defines a “multichannel video programming distributor,” a category now reserved for companies, such as Comcast, DirecTV and Verizon FiOS that provide a pipeline (wired or wireless) and transmit content through it. Such companies are entitled to at least two important protections: Local TV stations must negotiate with them in good faith over retransmission fees, and competing pay-TV operators cannot deny them access to the networks they own. After considering the question for more than 2 years, the FCC might soon propose to expand the category to include TV services that use the Internet to provide programs as they are aired – in other words, not video-on-demand services such as Netflix, but companies that would more or less replicate cable TV online.

Putting Internet-based TV services in the same category as cable and satellite TV would certainly help upstarts get to the bargaining table with broadcasters. Such a move by the FCC also should persuade the U.S. Copyright Office to treat online services the same as cable TV operators, effectively granting them vital licenses to the copyrighted programs the networks carry. The upstarts would still have to pay for these rights, however. They also would run into the same constraints cable and satellite companies do when negotiating with the media conglomerates that dominate TV programming. These content providers typically insist on selling their channels in a bundle, which is the main reason the typical pay-TV package is a giant, costly jumble of dozens of channels.

The FCC might not have the authority to break up such bundles. The best it may be able to do is bar the bundling of local TV stations with non-broadcast networks, such as ESPN, Fox News, the Golf Channel or Showtime. That would help a company such as Aereo, which wants to offer consumers a low-cost way to view their local TV broadcasts through the Internet, but not companies such as Sony and Dish Network, which are piecing together full-fledged online alternatives to cable. Nevertheless, it’s time for the FCC to create a common set of rules for pay-TV providers regardless of how they transmit their signals, and to welcome the new competitors that broadband makes possible.

Life is valuable even when it’s painful NEWARK, N.J. – The salutatorian of the Bayonne High School class of 1917 was cause for celebration recently. “If you can be a saint in Newark, New Jersey ...” my cab driver memorably said as I explained to him the reason for the police, media and crowds.

Miriam Teresa Demjanovich was being beatified at a morning Mass, in recognition of her saintly life lived on the streets of the Garden State, only a few decades before Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi and Chris Christie.

During her brief life, Demjanovich cared for her ailing parents, taught school and became a Sister of Charity, having long felt called to religious life. She was only 26 when she died, from complications following the removal of her tonsils. But she had spiritual wisdom far beyond her years.

I thought of Demjanovich’s short life when I read about Brittany Maynard. If you haven’t seen her heartbreaking video, she is a 29-year-old diagnosed with brain cancer. Her diagnosis is grim, and death is pending. She and her husband have moved to Oregon so that she can speed the process along and end her life Nov. 1. That’s her legal right in the Beaver State.

But how can that be right?

Back in Newark, just days after the celebration of Demjanovich’s short life, Fr. Benedict Groeschel was being laid to rest back at Newark’s Sacred Heart Cathedral.

In a book about death and the afterlife, Groeschel wrote: “Every thinking person knows that in the midst of terrible tragedy, anyone can be brought to a moment of wishing that life would end. This life on earth can have moments of exquisite beauty, of great satisfaction, but it can also be a ‘valley of tears.’ ” Maynard faces that valley.

We’re becoming a society whose institutions opt to prolong this denial of decrepitude, to cope with it by denying the loving, human aspects of decline and death. We claim it is merciful to cut life short, ignoring the unexpected sources of hope and healing life’s end can bring.

Those who advocate for legal euthanasia and assisted suicide

have adopted the word “dignity.”

It is a travesty of the word. Ours is a culture that has surrendered the inalienable right to life to circumstantial choice. We should be champions of human dignity, ensuring no one is made to feel her life is no longer worth living.

“The world tells us that our lives are our own and can be used as we see fit,” Groeschel wrote.

But, he argued, our lives are gifts and “one day we will surrender them back to our heavenly Father ... He has made us in His divine image, and He calls us to reflect this image by serving in charity ... as Jesus did.”

And there is the hope that even amidst the darkness – families broken and separated and hearts wounded – we can find the hope and joy for which we were made.

That’s what Jersey girl Demjanovich wrote in “Greater Perfection.” The perfection she sought was not an ideal, but a vulnerability – to love fully and hope for a life beyond this current exile.

Especially if you open two no-trump with only 20 or 21 points, that South hand is worth a two-club opening because it has so many aces and kings. (If you count two points for an ace and one for a king, an average two-notrump opening has seven points.

South has seven top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs. So, if declarer can get three diamond tricks, the contract will be home. But he has to realize that the finesse is a mirage. Suppose South takes the first trick with dummy’s spade ace, runs the diamond queen, and the finesse wins. South gets only two tricks from the suit and will also need clubs to break 3-2.

Instead, declarer should be willing to sacrifice one diamond trick to get three in return. He should win the first trick with his spade king, cash his diamond ace, and play another diamond. Even if he wins that second diamond trick, he plays the suit again and must succeed.

Psa test is recommended only for men of certain age Dear Doctor K: I’ve heard so many conflicting opinions about whether or not to get screened for prostate cancer. Are there official guidelines? What do they recommend?

Dear Reader: To say that prostate cancer screening has been controversial is an understatement. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Marc Garnick, clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, to hear his thoughts.

The two ways to screen for prostate cancer are the digital rectal exam (DRE) and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test.

PSA levels rise when the prostate has turned cancerous, but they also rise when the prostate is just irritated or damaged.

Together, PSA testing and DRE may nearly double the detection rate for early-stage prostate cancer.

But there’s a catch.

Because other prostate conditions besides cancer can raise the blood levels of PSA, an elevated PSA does not always mean a man has cancer. We call a high blood level of PSA in a man without prostate cancer a “false positive” result.

False positive results can cause needless worry. And they may lead to invasive procedures, such as biopsies, to determine if cancer is present. No test is perfect: There is always the chance of a false positive result. But it happens pretty often with the PSA test.

The bigger problem, however, is this: As strange as this may sound, not all cancers are bad for your health. Some prostate cancers are so small and slow-growing that they will never spread and cause problems: You’ll die of something else. You’ll die with prostate cancer, but not from prostate cancer.

Of course, some prostate cancers are aggressive and very definitely a threat to a man’s health. So what

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff we really want to have is a screening test that detects these aggressive prostate cancers.

Unfortunately, the PSA test cannot distinguish well between aggressive and slow-growing tumors.

The former may require immediate treatment, while the latter may need no active treatment at all.

A final weakness of the PSA test is that it does not detect all cancers. In other words, just as the test can be falsely positive, it can also be falsely negative: It comes back normal (“negative”), but you really do have prostate cancer.

In such cases, a PSA test offers a false sense of security.

In 2013, the American Urological Association came out with new guidelines that are more or less in line with those of other groups. These guidelines advise against routine screening for men at average risk who are under age 55 or over age 70. For men aged 55 to 69, the guidelines advise that doctor and patient make the decision together, based on a man’s individual risks, preferences and values.

I order PSA tests in many men aged 55 to 70.

But like many doctors, what I’m waiting for is a better test that detects aggressive prostate cancers accurately and ignores the slow-growing ones.
