ICS to host Oktoberfest fundraiser If you go

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – For more than 40 years the community has come together for Oktoberfest at Immaculate Conception School in Morris. And this year is no different.

As the school celebrates 125 years in the community, the Oktoberfest committee has been collecting donations for live and silent auction items.

“This is the largest single fundraiser the school does,” ICS Principal Kim DesLauriers said. “The profit from this event helps keep the school running.”

“My grandfather on my mother’s side, my mom, me and my siblings, and all of my children have attended ICS,” Hornsby said when asked why he stays involved in the fundraiser every year. “It’s a very quality education and it’s nice to have religion in school.”

Immaculate Conception School principal DesLauriers said it isn’t just about raising money for the school, however. The event also brings the community together.

“It serves a two-fold purpose,” he said. “People come together and volunteer, the local businesses always donate generously, and the communi-

ty comes out to purchase the donated items. It has a double effect.”

This year’s fundraiser will offer trips and tickets to major sporting events, baskets of goodies and even some unique items such as house cleaning, snow removal and baby-sitting services.

DesLauriers said the committee always has been mindful to have items of different value that allows everyone, no matter their budget, to participate.

Hornsby said, just like other years, the event is open to the public and anyone wishing to attend is welcome to come out and have a great evening.

The event is “come-asyou-are” casual, according to Hornsby.

Pumpkin farms educate youth on agriculture, history at Heap’s and Dollinger’s

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – What started as a front yard farm stand in 2001 has grown leaps and bounds at Heap’s Giant Pumpkin Farm in Minooka.

This year, the farm has grown in the form of Milo’s Castle, a large wooden structure mostly built by Kevin Heap and family, complete with towers, tunnels and two pirate ships. The giant playground was named after Heap’s grandfather, Milo.

“It was a challenge, but I enjoy building things,” he said. “We always try to add something new each year.”

On Wednesday, the Heaps were driving 13 kindergarten classes from Dr. Julian Rogus Elementary School in Frankfort on hayrack rides out to the pumpkin patch.

It took four shifts of three to four drivers to complete the tour. Student Carlos Miranda was intrigued by the ride and giant pumpkins still on the vine.

“I’m going to be a tractor driver one day, just to see what it’s all about,” Miranda said.

It was the first time the Rogus School has done a field trip to Heap’s, teacher Tina Gnade said.

When they weren’t on a hayrack ride, the students were in groups either playing in Milo’s Castle, picking out pumpkins to take home, eating or playing in the Heaps O’ Fun haystack barn.

Ellyn Heap, a retired teacher of 30 years and cousin of Kevin Heap’s father, Gary, taught a lesson on pumpkins and bees to each group.

She explained, among other things, what makes a good pie pumpkin and how bees make wax for some of their birthday candles. Students were surprised to hear vines can grow to 30 feet long before you find

Gnade said it was a wonderful experience for the students, who learned about farming and in particular, growing pumpkins.

The family business has grown so quickly Ellyn Heap joined the team as a retired teacher. She said Gary Heap asked her to teach a lesson to visitors because they were in need of more help.

The farm, which has been in the family since the 1860s, became an agricultural tourism destination in 2009 when Kevin Heap graduated from Purdue University with a degree in agricultural business.

In 2010, they built barns that are home to the various at-

tractions.

“I remember when Kevin graduated from college,” Ellyn Heap said. “His mother said he’s got some big ideas.

They’ve really built something here.”

Throughout the years, the Heaps have raised cattle and hogs and grown corn, soybeans, oats and hay. But Kevin Heap said he’s always had a love for growing pumpkins.

The farm now grows pumpkins in many varieties.

There is free admission to the farm from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. through Oct. 31. Individual attractions range from $1 to $3 a person or $6 to $8 a person for a barnyard pass which includes mazes and rides.

There’s also wide selection of pumpkin species available to purchase.

Although it was one of the Heap’s busiest weekdays and largest field trip groups this fall, Kevin Heap was able to relax for a moment before another class arrived.

“The best part is right now, when they leave with smiles,” he said. “And you know they learned a little bit about agriculture.”

At the Dollinger Family Farm in Channahon, which is open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. through Oct. 30, events and attractions such as Civil War Days on Saturday and Sunday have brought people in year after year.

“We have people who have taken pictures here each year,” Lori Lakota, marketer for Dollinger Farms said. “It’s a tradition for some.”

The 20th Annual Civil War Days will feature real actors who come in and set up tents on the farm and stay the night. The farm was once considered the town of Dresden, Lakota said, and was a stagecoach stop.

The Dollinger Family Farm, which also is free admission, features both tractor and horse drawn hay rides, honey making, a four-acre corn maze, large gift shop, steam train rides on weekends and a Native American exhibit on Sundays.

By MIKE MALLORY MORRIS – Morris Community High School District 101, like many in the state, is looking at every possibility to save dollars going forward.

In a meeting of the board’s finance committee Wednesday afternoon, the committee said it will look at the potential impact of a $500,000 expenditure reduction in the education fund model starting in fiscal 2017, and explore ways to meet that goal with as little impact on students as possible.

At the same time, it’s expected the district will see a 3 percent increase this fiscal year in Equalized Assessed Value, Superintendent Pat Halloran said, adding that this helps make up for ever-decreasing state funding.

The EAV has been on a decline since the economic downturn of 2008, he said, and the potential boost comes from slight increases in residential, commercial and industrial value in the area.

“It’s still financially challenging, but it allows us to offer the best services possible with the resources we have,” Halloran said. “We could sustain fund balances looking ahead to 2020.”

The largest expense in the education fund is salary and benefits, which accounts for about $6.2 million in the fund. A $500,000 reduction is about an 8 percent decrease in spending, but not all of that reduction would come out of salary and benefits.

In the past, the district has been able to cut salary and benefits costs through attrition when teachers retire.

The district has three teachers and an administrator retiring this year, so the district will see a decrease in cost there, Halloran said, but it’s too early to decide how it

New employees cost less than veteran employees, so there is a natural savings when a retiring teacher is replaced with a new one. However, Halloran said finding out how to make up for the loss in veteran faculty through the hiring process will be difficult.

“There’s no way we can replace all the knowledge walking out the door,” he said.

Assistant Principal Jeff Johnson is expected to replace retiring George Dergo as athletic director, while a new art teacher will likely cost less than the retiring Chris Hankins. Barb Rath and Cindy Shannon also are retiring.

The district soon will discuss working cash bond options.

The district has used working cash bonds since Collins Power Station closed in 2005, Halloran said.

The board is tentatively scheduled to adopt a resolution of intent to issue working cash bonds in November and call a public hearing in December.

Sewage contractors will need licenses Grundy County board approved an ordinance to increase fees of services

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Board approved this week a resolution requiring contractors who engage in the business of installing or servicing private sewage disposal systems to be licensed with the county.

Beginning Jan. 1, contractors will need to register with the Grundy County Health Department if they are involved with installing, repairing or pumping the tank of a private sewage disposal system or any associated components, including but not limited to the following: septic tanks, subsurface seepage system or mechanical components.

County Board Chairman

David Welter said the contractors will need to pay an annual fee as well as hold an Illinois Department of Public Health Private Sewage Disposal Installation and Pumpers License for the safety of county residents.

“The change is needed due to requirements associated with the Local Health Protection Grant,” Welter said.

The board also raised fees for several permits issued by the county’s Environmental Health Division to be more inline with what the actual costs are to the county.

Welter said a cost study analysis suggested the county significantly raise the fees on several permits. The county

Grundy County seeks assessor

MORRIS – Grundy County still is seeking a supervisor of assessments after Stephanie Kennedy resigned from the position effective Aug. 7.

Kennedy served as assessor for one year before returning to LaSalle County, where she was hired as supervisor of Assessments for LaSalle. She worked for in LaSalle County for seven years previously.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter asked during Tuesday night’s regular board meeting to pull an agenda item that would have asked members to vote on hiring a new assessor.

“As most of you are aware by now, we’ve been going through the process of interviewing candidates,” Welter said during the meeting. “The candidate has to pass a test to hold the position.”

He said the test was hosted at the Grundy County Administration Building and that many people took it.

“Only a few people passed the test,” he said. “We interviewed some of those candidates and ended up making an offer to an individual.”

Welter said unfortunately the compensation the county could offer didn’t equal what the candidate was looking for, so the person declined the offer.

Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor said after the meeting that officials would continue to search for a candidate who can best fill the position.

Welter said during the interim that staff in the office have stepped up and completed all the required reports to the state.

“We are comfortable with what they have done,” Welter said. “We will continue our search.”

The county assessor’s office determines the value of commercial and private property for taxing purposes, as well as does disaster assessment and processes property tax exemptions.

Judge dismisses sales tax case involving Channahon

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – A Cook County judge dismissed last week a 2011 lawsuit brought by the city of Chicago and the village of Skokie accusing Channahon, Kankakee and a number of client companies of wrongful diversion of sales tax dollars.

The lawsuit had alleged the companies would route Chicago-area sales through satellite offices in Kankakee and Channahon with lower sales tax rates, siphoning tens of millions of dollars from city and suburban taxing districts.

Those municipalities would offer partial tax-rebate abatements to the companies in exchange for the offices locating there.

In a 20-page opinion issued Friday, Cook County Judge Peter Flynn wrote that Chicago’s attempt to seek relief from Channahon and Kankakee is outside of the city’s purview.

Rather, authority to pursue the claims lies with the Illinois Department of Revenue, “which has primary jurisdiction over use tax redistribution claims such as these,” Flynn wrote.

John Holden, with the city’s law department, said Wednesday the city respectfully disagrees with the court’s decision.

“The crux of the decision was that Chicago and Skokie do not have standing to bring their claims,” Holden said in an email. “We are evaluating our next steps in response to the court’s decision, but intend to continue to pursue our claims.”

The suit sought refund of

lost tax revenue.

In Illinois, sales taxes for years have been assessed where a sale is “accepted,” rather than where a customer receives the product. But the Illinois Supreme Court in 2013 tossed out those rules, prompting many companies once reliant on that taxing strategy to abandon low-taxing communities.

Flynn wrote that because those rules were tossed out, that left the plaintiffs only “with a claim for damages for past conduct.”

The judge ruled that the city of Chicago or the village of Skokie cannot bring the case back to court.

“To hold otherwise would subvert the Illinois sales and use tax system, empower an unwieldy and potentially disruptive form of municipal vigilante tax litigation, and undermine [if not outright undo] the careful balance struck by the General Assembly,” Flynn wrote in his 20-page opinion issued Friday.

Allowing one municipality to sue another to recover tax payments wrongly collected by the defendant is one thing, Flynn said, but empowering Chicago and 200-plus other home rule communities with the opportunity to “roam the state” as tax enforcement vigilantes, suing taxpayers, is another.

To allow that would “undercut the legislative allocation of tax collection and distribution to IDOR” and “would create an expensive, unworkable freefor-all,” Flynn wrote.

Channahon Mayor Missey Schumacher was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.

Kathy enjoyed traveling and taking trips with the Mazon State Bank. She also took pleasure in gardening, her flowers and reading.

Kathy was an accomplished pianist and cook, and will be most remembered as the heart of her family. She cherished her grandchildren and was a devoted grandmother.

Funeral services will follow Saturday morning, October 17th at 10:30 a.m. in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, 245 South Kankakee Street in Coal City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Robert Noesen officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services and a memorial luncheon

will be held in the Berst Center immediately following the Mass.

A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Braidwood.

Former Patriots offensive lineman Adams, 67, dies in Houston The ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON – Former New England Patriots offensive lineman Sam Adams has died in Houston at the age of 67.

Adams became ill at his Houston home last Saturday and died at a hospital, Rodney Coleman of Coleman’s Mortuary in Jasper said Wednesday. No cause of

death was released.

Adams, who was a Jasper native, played for Prairie View A&M before joining the Patriots in 1972. His son, also named Sam Adams, played for Texas A&M. He joined the Seahawks in 1994 and his NFL career through 2007 included stops in Baltimore, Oakland, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Denver.

The elder Adams spent most of his NFL career with New England, finishing with New Orleans in 1981.

“This is really sad news for Patriots fans who enjoyed watching Sam Adams play and the many Patriots teammates who played with him throughout the 1970s,” Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft said, before

referring to one of the nation’s founding fathers, Boston-born Samuel Adams.

“Not only was he a stalwart in the trenches for nearly a decade, but I can’t think of a more appropriately named player to represent the Patriots.”

Adams started 90 of the 119 games he played in for the Patriots during his nine

seasons there. In 1978, he was part of a line that paved the way as the Patriots won the AFC East and set an NFL team record by rushing for 3,165 yards. Sam Cunningham led the team that year with 768 yards rushing.

The funeral is Saturday at Church of Jesus Christ House of Prayer in Jasper, 120 miles northeast of Houston.

Two Morris cardiac rehab patients complete 5K run SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Among the hundreds of runners in Morris Hospital’s recent Corn Fest 5K Fun Run and Wellness Walk, two in particular stood out.

Both participate in Morris Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program and recently have recovered Dave f r o m s e r i o u s Brasfield heart conditions that likely would have left them unable to run such a distance had they not taken matters into their Jerry Olson own hands with positive lifestyle changes and good, solid medical care.

Jerry Olson, 65, crossed the finish line at 40 minutes, 2 seconds, with his son Scott at his side throughout the race.

Running a 5K was not something that ever had crossed Olson’s mind until a cardiac emergency two years ago made him realize a lifestyle change was in order.

A farmer, Olson always had been active, but working out had not been a priority.

He did notice that his energy levels weren’t what they used to be.

In the Morris Hospital emergency room, doctors found one of Olson’s heart arteries severely restricted.

He had a stent placed in one of his coronary arteries in the Morris Hospital Cath Lab to restore blood flow.

After completing Morris Hospital’s 12-week phase II cardiac rehab program and getting his strength and confidence back, Olson enrolled in the ongoing phase III cardiac rehab and began working out every morning. He also began running the rural roads around his farm with the goal of running a 5K. “I was bound and deter-

mined I was going to get better,” he said. “I wanted to prove to myself I could do it.”

Last year, he ran Morris Hospital’s Corn Fest 5K with his son Cliff. This year, he beat his time by 25 seconds.

This year’s Corn Fest run was Dave Brasfield’s first 5K. He came in at 31 minutes. The 52-year-old, also of rural Morris, got the scary diagnosis of heart failure more than a year ago when he went to his general physician with complaints of problems sleeping and just not feeling well.

“I was short-winded, and I was tired,” Brasfield said. “I just had no get-up-and-go, and I had a hard cough. I do body work for a living, and I was building a pool deck, and I thought I was just tired.”

His doctor sent him for testing at Morris Hospital, which showed Brasfield had an enlarged heart and was in heart failure. He had a heart function of only 7 percent. He was admitted to the hospital, where he began medication and a special diet.

After release, Brasfield had astounding success building up his heart muscle by participating in Morris Hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation program.

“I can’t say enough about the staff there,” he said. “They really want you to get better. I went from extreme heart failure to mild heart failure in six months. I can’t say enough about how it changed my life.”

Brasfield said the experience gave him the confidence he needed to start working out at the gym as well.

Today, he gets up before dawn and goes to the gym, and he also runs at least two miles each day. He said he practically breezed through the 5K. “I was close to being placed on a transplant list,” he said.

“I almost died. And now, I feel great. I feel like I’m 30. Honestly, I do.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – With four losses already, the playoffs begin for the Morris football team Friday night against Northern Illinois Big 12 rival Sycamore.

The Redskins enter the game with a 3-4 record, having lost their last three contest.

Sycamore, meanwhile, is 4-3 with wins in their last three games, two of them decisive wins over teams that have beaten the Redskins.

The Spartans downed Kaneland, 35-7, two weeks ago and beat Yorkville, 20-14, last week.

Not surprisingly, Morris coach Alan Thorson knows his team is in for a challenge.

But, it’s a challenge he feels the Redskins can meet and overcome.

“This is for sure do-or-die for us as far as the playoffs,” Thorson said. “We’ve been working very hard at practice all week. Even though they have three losses, Sycamore is a very good team, and they are fighting for their lives as well. They have Sterling in the final week, so they want to lock up their fifth win this week and we need to avoid our fifth loss.”

After losing three of their first four games, Sycamore appears to have hit its stride.

“Their defense is very good,” Thorson said. “Nick Niemann is a very good linebacker and their whole defense is aggressive and has good players out there. It certainly won’t be a cakewalk for our offense. We have to make sure we are blocking well this week.

“Their offense is a shotgun-wing type of offense. They like to run out of it, but they can throw it well, too. Their starting quarterback [Brett Bemis] was out last week, but their backup [Tyler Sulaver] went 10 of 14. We’re going to prepare for Bemis to be in there, but they don’t lose much if he’s not.”

For Thorson, the opponent is secondary. He is more focused on the way his team plays.

“All the guys that are back from last year have been through this. They saw last

year what can be done, and they saw what it takes to get that done. But we can’t look ahead and say we are going to make a run in the playoffs unless we get there. And that starts Friday.”

Cubs appear to know what they’re doing

By RICK MORRISSEY rmorrissey@suntimes.com Full-time Cubs fan and sometimes singer Eddie Vedder got it perfectly right before the wild-card game in Pittsburgh.

“It’s a brand new day,” the Pearl Jam frontman told the Sun-Times’ Gordon Wittenmyer. Sounds like a song. Or a slogan. Mostly, it sounds like the truth.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been writing that these young Cubs don’t know any better, that the secret to their success is in their inability to fully grasp what they’re up against.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo said the same thing in a champagne-soaked clubhouse Tuesday night, just after his team had pointed the Cardinals toward the offseason.

But it dawned on me Wednesday morning that the Cubs know better than anybody what they’re facing – surely better than those of us who are flinching, twitching Veterans of Cubs Wars. And they don’t care. They know that a heavy past isn’t an immovable object. A bat wedged just right can act as a lever, heaving history out of the way.

They are headed to the National League Championship Series because they do indeed know better. Saying they don’t carries with it a certain amount of condescension. It chalks up their success to blissful unawareness or soulless automation. These Cubs are perfectly aware of what they’re doing. All the good things that are happening seem just right to them, as natural as playing catch with a friend in the backyard.

They treated the archrival Cardinals as if they were made of tracing paper in the NL Division Series. Crumpled them up and tossed them aside. There was no disrespect or disdain from the Cubs, just impatience.

You’re in our way, they said, without saying a word.

Kyle Schwarber. Kris Bryant. Jorge Soler. Addison Russell. Javy Baez. These are

kids playing a kid’s game and having a blast doing it. Lots of teams over lots of years have tried to convince themselves they should play the game the way they did as children.

Lose themselves in the joy of competition until they hear their moms calling them in for dinner. But the pressure, the grind of a long season and the business of sports tied most of them into bundles of nerves and left them on the side of the road.

Maybe it helps that Bryant, et al., aren’t that far removed from childhood. Some of them were playing Little League less than a decade ago.

Millions of people are watching them now, and the players seem to love it. The spotlight doesn’t burn them, as it has so many Cubs in the past. It reveals them. Schwarber’s massive Game 4 homer landing on top of the video scoreboard in right field? In the biggest game of his short life? Are you kidding me?

Truly a brand new day.

The front office, the coaches and the veterans haven’t treated the youngsters as youngsters. That’s part of the secret here. Manager Joe Maddon could make a rock feel good about itself. So making a rookie feel like an important cog in the machine? Child’s play for the hipster skipper.

Where will this go? Who knows? Just know this: Cubs fans deserve medals. After years of watching their team lose, they have flocked back to Wrigley Field. They deserve everything they’re getting.

By the way, “Brand New Day’’ is the name of a 1999 Sting song. It’s probably a bit dated and mellow to be the theme song for this team.

Coincidentally, a Police song perfectly sums up the Cubs’ existence the past century-plus: “So Lonely.”

The days of joking about the franchise seem over.

At the bridge table, a well-timed pause might help you to make or break a contract, making you and your partner happy.

In today’s deal, many players would go down at the table, but more would find the winning play on paper because they would pause at the right moment. What should South do in five hearts after West leads the diamond ace? Did West have a more effective lead?

West used the Unusual No-trump to show at least 5-5 in the minors.

Then East and South bid at the five-level, unsure who could make what.

If the defense was accurate, five diamonds would go down one, losing two spades and one heart. Five hearts is in danger if West has the club ace.

Then declarer might concede one spade and two clubs. Of course, if East has the club ace, no problem. But if West holds that card, what chance does South have?

Declarer can get home if spades are 3-2 and hearts are 2-1, if he does not ruff at trick one, but instead discards a spade.

Suppose West continues with a low diamond. South ruffs, cashes his heart king and spade ace, plays a spade to dummy’s king, ruffs a spade high, returns to dummy with a trump, and pitches his two clubs on the high spades. Five hearts bid and made with an overtrick.

Afterward, West said that next time he would lead a low diamond at trick one.

Widower with two boys adds pregnant girlfriend to the mix Dear Abby: My son, a widower with two boys, ages 6 and 9, has just informed me his 33-year-old girlfriend, “Karen,” is pregnant and due in five months. He started seeing her three months after his wife died, and they have been an item for eight months. She has been staying at his house every weekend, and plans to move in with him soon.

Karen has never been married and has no children, so she will become a stepmom and a new mom in a short period of time. Neither my son nor Karen seems to realize how difficult it will be to bring a stepparent into this situation, especially with a new baby on the way. One of the boys will have to give up his bedroom when the baby arrives. I’m

I think this relationship has moved too fast and they are clueless about how all this will affect the boys. My son has told me I need to “get over it, it’s his life and his kids.” Is there anything I can do to help the boys process all of this and adjust to the new situation? –

or acting out. They probably like Karen or the relationship wouldn’t have lasted as long as it has.

It appears that in trying to be helpful you might have come across as negative or judgmental. If that’s true, apologize to your son and suggest if the adjustment becomes difficult for his boys, a family therapist could help to nip any problems in the bud. Then cross your fingers and hope it isn’t necessary.

Dear Abby: My husband and I have been married 10 years.

Half of his family are smokers.

Every year, there has been a family gathering at his dad’s house. Since the birth of my first child, smoking has become forbidden in that home.

This year, however, the

party will be held at the home of another where smoking will be permitted. I can’t handle smoke. It gives me a sore throat and I cough for a week after exposure. Because of my reaction and for the health of my children, I don’t want to attend. (When we get home we immediately have to shower and launder our clothing to get rid of the smell.)

My husband is adamant we should attend and bring the kids. He was raised around smoking and doesn’t see what the “big deal” is.

What can I say or do to convince him not to force me and our children to be exposed to the health hazards of secondhand smoke? Am I being unreasonable because it’s only one night a year? – Hater Of

think so. Much as you might like, you can’t raise your children in a bubble. I would hate to see you isolate your children from their aunts, uncles, cousins and any grandparents who are still alive during their once-a-year holiday celebration.

If you would prefer not to attend because you can’t stand the smell of the smoke, stay home. But do not prevent your children from knowing the family. Assuming they don’t have health issues, one evening of exposure to cigarette smoke shouldn’t be harmful.
