By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Community Foundation of Grundy County is open for business in its new office space at 520 E. Illinois Ave. in Morris.

The Community Foundation held a ribbon-cutting and open house Tuesday to show off the new space to the community. The foundation purchased the 3,670-square-foot space in the CanalPort Community Center for $100,000.

The aim of the center is for it to become a nonprofit hub, which is what Jim and Carol Baum saw when they created it from the older-than-a-century building that once housed Coleman’s Hardware.

“It’s great to have a permanent place in the county,” board member Jay Fillman said. “It will be nice to have the community see it and use it so people know we are here.”

The foundation board paid for half of the purchase with a match from the Baums. Jim Baum is a trustee of the board, but also is a founder and former foundation president.

Christina Van Yperen, executive director at the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce, said it’s nice to see Jim and Carol Baum’s plans for the old Coleman Hardware building come to fruition.

“We’ve had a couple of organizations mention they are putting it in their 2016 budget,” Buck said. “We understand that not-for-profit organizations work on budget cycles that end at different times of the year, so we look forward to welcoming them when their 2016 year starts.”

Buck said the foundation is thrilled to have the larger space so staff can host ongoing events in their own office space rather than borrowing space from other organizations as has been done in the past.

• Shane R. Valentine, 26, of Morris, was arrested by Morris police Oct. 7 on a charge of retail theft. He was booked into the Grundy County Jail.

• Daniel M. Gonzalez, 45, of Texas, was arrested by Morris police Saturday for driving under the influence of alcohol.

He also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage, failure to signal and disobeying a stop sign. He was given a court date of Nov. 9.

• Norman M. Vereecke, 22, of Coal City, was arrested

by Morris police Sunday on charges of possession of marijuana less than 2.5 grams and possession of drug equipment. He was given a court date of Nov. 9.

• Shawn M. Riis Jr., 24, of Minooka, was arrested by Minooka police Thursday on a charge of aggravated assault.

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Students at Coal City Middle School will say goodbye to worries as they take the stage this week to perform the Tony Award-winning musical “The Lion King.”

Jack Micetich, the show’s director and a middle school math teacher, said 70 students auditioned for the 44 cast spots in the production – a large number considering the middle school has just 500 students.

“There has been such a culture shift here,” Micetich said.

“We have football and baseball players along with the traditional drama kids sharing the stage as cast members. The shift and acceptance of theater is incredible.”

Eighth-grade student Cody Rogers, who portrays the show’s villain, Scar, said he enjoys his part.

“It’s pretty accepted to be in the show,” he said. “Jack and the other directors have done such a good job that a lot of kids want to do it.”

Rogers knows that winning has a price – practice. He has spent hours on the stage learning his part, despite being familiar with the story of “The Lion King.”

“I feel knowing the movie helps me with my part,” Rogers said. “But I’ve never played an antagonist and seeing how it works in the movie really helps me.”

He said he’s always wanted to play a bad guy, which is different than how he sees himself in day-to-day life.

“I like all the yelling, and bossing the hyenas,” he said.

“I’d have to say it’s the hardest part too, being a mean and naive character. In real life I don’t like to be that way.”

Knowing the movie doesn’t necessarily help with all the characters, though.

By MIKE MALLORY MORRIS – The Lisbon Road bridge construction project is on track for its target completion date of late November, Illinois Department of Transportation Engineer Herb Jung said Tuesday. When asked by the Morris Herald-News about concerns from residents that the project has been delayed, Jung said he’s heard the same rumors. But Jung said he talked to the contractor last week and the project is on track.

“I see no reason why it won’t be open around Thanksgiving,” Jung said.

Jung did say the contract was unclear about which guard rail to order, but an adjustment was made, and since then, the project has moved along well.

When the bridge does open, it may be one lane at a time during the day with flaggers directing traffic into early December, Jung said. There may

“It’s a well-traveled road, and we understand people do not want to drive over to Route 47 [to get into town],” Jung said.

IDOT started demolition of the bridge in late April as part of a $3.09 million reconstruction project, and it has been closed since mid-April after snowfall delayed the start by a week.

Ultimately, a wider and safer bridge will be in place.

IDOT is the regulating authority of the Lisbon Road bridge and is paying for the project. The contract states the project has a completion date of spring 2016 for weather-dependent items, such as landscaping.

The former bridge was in place since 1958 and it was determined through IDOT’s periodic review and inspection process that it needed to be replaced.

Clearance for I-80 drivers under the new Lisbon Road bridge will be 17 feet, 3 inches, while

the two lanes on the bridge will be 15 feet wide, increased from the previous 11 feet per lane.

A sidewalk is being added to the east side of the bridge, which has been a concern for those who travel across the bridge frequently. Pedestrians and bikers were forced to cross the bridge in traffic lanes.

When the bridge was demolished, many trees were taken down. Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said the state has an agreement with the city for approximately 180 replacement trees to be delivered from Illinois at some point if the state figures out a budget. Kopczick said Morris can place the trees where it feels necessary as long as it’s on public grounds, such as parks and parkways.

Retired police chief to head counties’ BBBS

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Retired Joliet Police Chief Mike Trafton has been selected as the new chief executive officer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties. He will replace Lisa Morel Las, who left in August to take another job.

Trafton, who retired from the Joliet police force three years ago with 28 years experience, said Tuesday he applied for the job as a chance to give back to the community.

“After being in the police force for 30 years, I’ve seen firsthand what happens to kids when they don’t have par-

ents or role models,” Trafton said.

The organization is an area franchise of the national outfit, Big Brothers Big Sisters, that helps at-risk children by forming a bond between them and adult mentors.

Trafton will make an annual salary of $70,000. His first day on the job was Tuesday.

Trafton began mentoring as a big brother at BBBS last year. While Big Brothers Big Sisters has many volunteers, most are women. He said he hopes to reach out to the community to drive more male role models into the mentoring

Grundy board holds hearing to amend fiscal 2015 budget

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Board held a public hearing Tuesday evening for the 2015 amended budget before the regularly-scheduled board meeting.

There were no board comments and no public comments during the hearing.

The budget needed to be amended because of decreased revenue, caused primarily from the loss of funds from point of sale income.

That occurred after Channahon, Morris and other municipalities throughout the state were sued by the Regional Transit Authority for using what was at the time a legal taxing strategy that allowed companies to open small purchasing offices within areas with lower taxing rates then Chicago or Cook County.

The RTA had alleged there were more than a dozen such offices in Grundy County, with Channahon alone home

to at least 16 such companies.

That practice is no longer allowed.

Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor said the county was faced with $1.23 million less in revenues this year.

“It’s a great challenge. The loss is not a one-time thing,” Pryor said before the meeting.

“With the support of elected officials and department heads we have a good plan in place.”

The board asked earlier in the year departments and elected officials to cut 3 percent of their expenditures.

With those cuts made, Pryor said the county was able to keep services at a level Grundy County citizens expect and deserve.

Board Chairman David Welter said the significant loss of revenue was devastating, but thankfully the county had been fiscally responsible and had enough reserves that, coupled with the decrease of expenditures, saved the county from having to cut services.

Pryor said the county was able to significantly reduce expenditures by not transferring budgeted funds to the New Capital Project Fund or the Capital Improvement Fund.

He said those funds were not set aside for any particular project, so the county would not be losing out on any particular planned project.

Welter said, looking forward to the 2016 budget and beyond, the board will have to examine cutting the budget by $700,000 for fiscal 2016, and $600,000 each for fiscal 2017 and 2018 in order to not dip into the $7.5 million in reserves the board saved over the past several years.

Pryor said the budget changes for 2015 and moving forward to 2016 would not result in a loss of jobs; however two vacant positions – one in IT and one in maintenance – will not be filled.

The board is expected to vote on the 2016 budget at the regular November board meeting.

Utility Concrete Products, 2495 W. Bungalow Road, recently produced precast deck panels that were installed in only four days on Chicago’s Peoria Street Pedestrian Bridge rebuild project.

This project was the first in Illinois to use precast deck panels as part of a concept called accelerated bridge construction, or ABC, that is widespread across the country but just catching on in Illinois, said Tom Heraty, vice president of sales and engineering for UCP. “ABC focuses less on cost and more on time and maintenance of traffic,” Heraty said.

The trend of entities such as the Illinois Department of Transportation desiring quicker turnaround times benefits UCP, he said, because it is the company’s goal to use the most modern methods possible.

ABC allows some construction projects to be knocked out in a weekend or during nights, therefore lowering the cost for IDOT. By attending conferences and forming working relationships with industry leaders, Heraty and UCP stay up to date and provide the best products for projects in the Midwest.

When it comes to Illinois, either Heraty or IDOT officials in Springfield will hear of a new method and they’ll meet to discuss the possible implementation of it, he said.

The advantage to using precast concrete is that it allows the contractor to assemble the underlying bridge deck faster, as compared to a longer, traditional cast-in-place construction project, where forming and curing will increase the on-site duration.

The pedestrian bridge, which goes over Interstate 290 and is near the University of Illinois - Chicago, used more than 15,000 square feet of 8-inch precast deck panels set transverse to the main longitudinal I-beams, according to a news release from UCP.

The panels are manufactured at UCP’s climate-controlled environment, delivered to the site and laid out kind of like Legos, Heraty said.

No form work is done, and the panels already have holes in them. Top-of-the-line, high-performance concrete is then poured into the holes, he said.

The project was recently featured in industry outlet Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute.

PCI highlighted the project for its construction technique, which “capitalized on innovative precast concrete ABC techniques that allowed for high strength, thinner bridge sections and reduced delays and lane closures,” according to the news release.

Ruth was born on January 3, 1918, in Goodfarm Township to Louis and Alvina (Burger) Zabel. She was raised on the farm in Goodfarm Township and was a 1935 graduate of Dwight Township high school.

On March 7, 1941, she married Alvin Danker at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Dwight. They lived in Kankakee, IL for a short time before moving to the Zabel farm. They farmed until retirement. Ruth cared for her family and later worked at the Dwight Coil Factory and the Fox Center as an activity therapist.

Ruth and her husband traveled extensively in the U.S. They visited family and friends in many states and especially enjoyed the national and state parks. After retirement, they spent winters in Lakeland, Florida.

Ruth was baptized and confirmed into her faith at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Dwight. She was a member of the Mary Martha Society, LWML and served as church treasurer and as a Bible study leader. She also was a member of the Dwight Historical Society and volunteered at the museum. Ruth had many hobbies which included sewing, rug braiding, crocheting and photography.

“It was incredible to not only see the submarine and all the technology behind it, but to see the thousands of people show their support for our brave men and women who fight for our country and freedom around the world,” Rezin said. “It was an experience that reinforces how proud I am to be an American, and how proud I am of our country.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner made remarks to those in attendance, and First Lady Michelle Obama christened the submarine.

Rezin also met the USS Illinois Commanding Officer Jesse Porter, several veterans, and several constituents from the 38th District who made the trip, including Ken Browning from Exelon’s Braidwood plant.

The stress and practice isn’t reserved just for the actors, though, as Micetich gets ready for the show.

“Out of the past 96 hours, I’ve been here 70,” he said.

This is the fifth middle school production for Micetich, and the biggest so far.

“We pick a show and do the best we can with that show.

“The thing I liked about this match was that we beat Oswego in two earlier in the season, and tonight we had a different lineup and did it again,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “We do have a lot of weapons we can use, but it’s nice to see that Ginger is slowly starting to take over the role of go-to hitter.

“With Alli out, we need her more, but Ginger has been building up to this all year.

It’s nice to see her senior leadership showing, especially with all the young players we have on the team.”

Ginger Perinar added two more kills as Minooka (15-7, 9-2) took a 7-2 lead in the first set of the Southwest Prairie Conference matchup.

Oswego pulled to within 10-8, but two kills from Rocky Perinar helped the Indians move back ahead 13-9.

With the score 20-14, Ginger Perinar served two straight aces and, at 24-16, delivered the kill that ended the set.

Oswego hung tough with Minooka in the second set, as the set was tied as late as 14-14. Minooka got three kills from Ginger Perinar to go ahead 19-17, and a kill by Hise made it 20-17.

Sydney Arliss came off the bench to serve, and she promptly dropped two aces on

the Panthers for a 22-17 lead.

Fred Hoiberg: Rose’s recovery ETA longer than anticipated

According to coach Fred Hoiberg, Rose likely will miss the Bulls’ remaining four preseason games and is in danger of missing the first week of the regular season. The Bulls open the season with three games in four nights.

So much for the original two-week recovery window.

Rose had surgery Sept. 30, but blurred vision and swelling in the eye have slowed the recovery process. West leads the heart ace: three, nine, four. West cashes the heart king: six, two, jack. West continues with the heart queen. What should declarer do?

First, South should check his losers.

He seems to have only three: two in hearts and one in clubs. But he must also worry about that third heart.

East has played high-low, indicating a doubleton. Yes, he might be fooling, but what if he is not? Then he is threatening to overruff the dummy at trick three and give declarer an extra loser.

At trick three, South has four dummy choices: ruff low, ruff middle, ruff high, or discard. Which should he choose?

As I am confident you have worked out by now, the second-best play is to ruff with dummy’s spade nine. Maybe West has the 10. Here, though, East overruffs and the contract goes down one.

Instead, declarer should discard one of dummy’s clubs. In this way, he trades a dangerous ruff in hearts for a much safer ruff in clubs.

Suppose West shifts to a club.

South wins with dummy’s ace (the honor from the shorter side first), draws two rounds of trumps, cashes his club king, ruffs his last club in the dummy, plays a diamond to his ace, draws East’s third trump, and claims.

Muscle-strengthening effect of exercise helps protect joints Note to readers: This column is an update of one that ran originally in October 2011.

Dear Dr. K: I like to exercise, but people in my family tend to get osteoarthritis. Is exercise good or bad for my joints?

Dear Reader: A joint is a place where two or more bones come together. Your question has a simple and a more complicated answer.

The simple answer is: For most people, regular exercise is good for the joints.

The more complicated answer is certain types of exercise can put pressure on the joints. For example, jogging on hard surfaces, such as street asphalt, causes the bones of the pelvis, hip and

On the other hand, even walking around puts pressure on many joints – for example, the spine, hip and knee. Yet most people don’t develop serious arthritis from walking.

That’s because muscles around a joint protect it from being injured.

They help keep the bones from pounding on each other.

Regular exercise strengthens those muscles, and those muscles protect the joints.

Our joints are like car tires. The more you drive on tires, the faster they’ll need to be replaced.

Regular exercise that doesn’t cause bone to drive against bone – such as swimming or, to some extent, an elliptical cross-trainer – is clearly beneficial. It strengthens the muscles.

Even considering regular exercise that does cause bone to pound on bone, such as jogging on hard surfaces, for most people the muscle-strengthening efforts overcome the bone-on-bone effects.

Thus, regular exercise is good for the joints.

But there are exceptions, and I’m an example. I jogged pretty much every day for

35 years – until my right hip joint wore out.

My hip bone was rubbing against my thigh bone, and it hurt.

Yet my left hip was completely normal. I got a right hip replacement, and the pain has been gone ever since.

So why did one of my hips go bad, but the other didn’t?

I had an injury to the main muscle in my right thigh when I was a teenager. That muscle has never been as strong since. Years of jogging on asphalt probably put too much stress on my right hip.

I advise my patients who, like you, come from a family that tends to get osteoarthritis to choose regular exercise that minimizes the striking of

bone on bone.

You can do other things to protect yourself against getting osteoarthritis.

If you are obese, lose weight. The extra weight puts extra stress on most of your joints. If you have injured a joint – particularly if you have had a fracture that involves the joint – be especially careful about activities that stress that joint. Ditto for injuries to muscle that protects a joint.

Bottom line: Moving is better than not moving – for your joints and for overall health.
