Fred Orlovich “Fritz”, age 90, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2014.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Kathryn (nee Noverio) Orlovich; children, Fred (Karen) Orlovich, Charles (Patricia) Orlovich; grandchildren, Jason, Adam (Ashley) and Daniel Orlovich, Chad (Ashley), Jeremy (Heidi), and Josh (Kelsey) Orlovich; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Hailey; one brother, Steve (Lois) Orlovich; sisters-in-law, Millie (the late Joseph) and Lois Ann (the late Raymond) Orlovich; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; lifelong friends, Joan (the late Henry) Garavaglia, Russ Cress and Mark “Skinny” Hagler.

Preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Catherine (nee Divijak) Orlovich; a grandchild in infancy; two sisters, Annie and Rosie Orlovich; brothers, Eli (Anne), Raymond, Joseph, Sam (Louise), Mike “Meach” (Mary) Orlovich, and George Orlovich.

Fred was born and raised in Rockdale, IL and retired from U.S. Steel after 37 years of service. He was a proud United States Army Veteran receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star due to his faithful and courageous service. Fred is the current president of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church where he has been a member for his entire life. Fritz was also a Freemason. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he would attend all of their sporting events. He will be truly missed.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Joliet Area Community Hospice for the wonderful

comfort and care provided to Fred.

Chuck had a love for the Nascar and the Chicago Bears and Cubs. He always enjoyed cooking and having his friends and family over for cookouts. He raced cars at the Grundy County Speedway in the 1970s, racing against drivers that later became Nascar drivers today.

Charles is survived by Christina (Chad) Terry of Seneca, Laurie (Steve) Barry of Morris, Billy (Amy) Sproull of Mazon, Stephanie Sproull of Joliet and John Sproull of Verona; grandchildren, Ava and Ambrey Terry, Darle and Hunter Barry, Tyler and Max Sproull, and Mason Van Amburgh; sister, June Krull of Mazon; and best friend, Charlie “O” Olson, “neighbor Bud” Bud Sheedy, his black lab “King”; nephews, Matthew (Caley) Krull of Mazon, Jacob Krull of Mazon and James (Megan) Krull of Morris.

Gas prices below $3 in Morris

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Champaign-Urbana resident Darla Kelley was happy she stopped in Morris to buy gas for her trip home Monday.

Kelley was surprised to find gas prices below $3 a gallon in Morris. She paid $2.99 a gallon Monday at the BP station on Route 47.

“This is really nice. We haven’t seen prices this low in a long time,” she said.

According to AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher, Morris prices were well below the area average of $3.06, with most local gas stations hovering near $3 for a gallon of regular, unleaded gas.

Lower gas prices are typical

Beth Mosher AAA spokeswoman in the fall season, Mosher said, but this year, all areas are experiencing lower-than-normal prices. According to AAA, average fuel prices nationwide hit their lowest point since February.

The Illinois average was at $3.30 Monday, slightly higher than the Midwest’s average of $3.19, Mosher said. Missouri had the lowest fuel price average in the country this week, coming in at $3.01.

Drivers in as many as 20 states are expected to enjoy

prices below $3 through the end of this year, pending any market-moving news, according to AAA. “Petroleum prices are coming down. Supply is very abundant, and demand is low,” Mosher said. “So we’re seeing lower prices.”

Morris BP station manager Michelle Wren said she thinks it has been at least four years since prices dropped below the $3 mark.

“It may have even been five years. I know it’s been awhile,” Wren said.

Weather doesn’t stop shoppers at 3 French Hens market

By BOB BLACK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – A crisp and sunny autumn day provided the setting for another successful 3 French Hens French Country Market on Saturday in Morris.

“It was a great crowd, with customers still joining us after the 2 p.m. close,” said co-organizer Monica Spence-Vogel, who estimated about 4,000 shoppers and 120 vendors attended.

“The I&M Canal is such a beautiful backdrop for the market; it seems folks linger longer and love strolling along the canal side,” she said. “It’s always fun to see where the shoppers come from: St. Louis, Wisconsin, Indiana, northern Illinois.”

Traci Tessone, the other co-organizer, also was pleased with how the day unfolded.

“It’s going great,” she said less then two hours after the start. “It was a little chilly this morning when we were setting up, but [now], it’s nice and sunny. Lots of shoppers.”

A Farm to Table Dinner was scheduled for Friday, but it was postponed. The dinner will raise money for a sensory garden for Special Connections of Grundy County.

Spence-Vogel said it was a busy weekend, which included the Chicago Marathon.

“One of the co-organizers of Special Connections is running in the marathon. ... It’s all about raising money, so we decided to postpone it,” she said, noting the dinner may take place in the early

“We are so thrilled to have Kathy Tribble,” Spence-Vogel said. “She’s a nationally-known folk artist.”

“I love it,” she said.

“This is a good show. It’s cold today, but it’s a very good show.”

MORRIS – Wheels were spinning and children were giggling Sunday night as they picked out prizes at the Grapevine Mission Fundraiser at the Moose Lodge in Morris.

The Grapevine Mission is a nonprofit organization founded by Judy and Mark Pershey of Dwight in April 2006. The organization helps local families by delivering food and providing “dignity packs,” as well as other services.

A “dignity pack” is a laundry basket filled with toiletries, paper towels, laundry soap and other items not covered by food stamps.

The fundraiser had a smaller than normal turnout, but Judy Pershey said she doesn’t care if one or 100 come to support her organization. She still gives 110 percent.

Advertising Resources plans Minooka operation

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Advertising Resources Inc. will move into 456,000 square feet of space at a Minooka business park, Liberty Property Trust announced Monday.

The company, which repackages merchandise for retail display, will move into Liberty Business Center Minooka.

The operation is expected to bring more than 150 jobs, mostly in warehousing, said Doug Pryor, vice president of the Grundy Economic Development Council.

It was not clear when Advertising Resources plans to begin operations in Minooka.

The company has a location in

Alsip. Pryor said the Minooka operation would be an “outgrowth” from the Alsip location, so the jobs would be new.

The company’s Alsip office did not immediately return a call for comment.

“Their business is a lot of repackaging,” Pryor said. “They don’t necessarily make product. They take the product and repackage it for retail display.

Endcaps are sort of their specialty.”

Liberty Business Center Minooka is a 212-acre development, which has additional sites earmarked for development, according to Liberty Property Trust. The site being taken by Advertising Resources is an existing building at 456 International Parkway.

Comcast service out throughout area because of Channahon fire

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Several Comcast customers throughout Morris, Channahon, Mazon and other local areas were without cable and internet for much of Monday.

A section of Comcast’s fiber network was damaged early Monday morning after a small electrical fire in Channahon, said Jack Segal, vice president of public relations for the Comcast Greater Chicago Region.

At about 1:30 a.m. Monday, Channahon fire crews responded to an electrical fire on a ComEd power pole near the intersection of Route 6 and Interstate 55, according to Fire Chief John Petrakis of the Channahon Fire Protection District.

As of Monday afternoon,

Comcast service was still not restored, but Segal said Comcast crews were on standby.

“Our technicians are in place and ready to restore service once ComEd deems it safe to enter the area and do the necessary repair work,” Segal said.

Petrakis said crews extinguished the fire within a few minutes after ComEd shut off power to the lines.

Petrakis said ComEd determined it was one of Comcast’s cables that caught fire.

Because the power lines were not heavily damaged, very few ComEd customers lost power.

Segal said it was not clear exactly how many customers were without service, but he anticipated most of the customers to regain service by Monday evening.

Quinn’s $5 million in funds did not cover project’s tab

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Interior construction of Joliet Junior College’s City Center campus project is moving forward even with the school still waiting on most of the $25.5 million promised in state funding.

While in Joliet Saturday, Gov. Pat Quinn announced $5 million in funding to JJC to help finish interior construction of the City Center campus, but it’s unclear when, or if, the remaining money will find its way to JJC’s coffers.

Dave Blanchette, spokesman for the governor’s office, said the funding will be “part of the discussion” as lawmakers craft the state’s next fiveyear capital plan at the start of the new year.

“There are a lot of remaining needs throughout the state of Illinois. Each of those will be part of the discussion. ...

The project has been on the list of priorities,” Blanchette said.

Longtime JJC Board Chair Andy Mihelich said JJC will

use alternate funds in the meantime to complete construction because it’s “anybody’s guess” when the state will provide the money.

“We expect to get the money whenever the state gets money. Your guess might be as good as mine,” Mihelich said.

“But under that assumption, we are moving forward.”

State legislators have yet to appropriate capital funds for the project, Mihelich said. But he said he fully anticipates the state to follow through on the remaining money – even if it’s after the fact.

The City Center campus project has been No. 1 on the priority list for the Illinois Community College Board for a few years now, he said.

The project, which carries a $58 million price tag, will be paid for with bond money, the $25.5 million from the state, interest earned on bonds, and money received from other master plan projects that came in under budget, according to school officials.

The $58 million City Center campus will house the adult education and literacy department, workforce development and the culinary arts program.

The building is expected to open in fall 2016.

“I really like making and sharing my barbecue creations

with others,” Dolan said. “It only seemed natural for me to impart my barbecue wisdom on the people of Cruise Night.”

Stephanie Ehrmann of Morris was on hand to sell pastries from the Liberty Street storefront Enjoi Bakery.

“I love coming to Cruise Night,” said Ehrmann. “It gives me a chance to get out of the bakery and see people I know.”

One noticeable difference in this month’s Cruise Night was the weather. Temperatures stayed in the 60s for the dura-

tion of the event, signaling the slow and imminent change in the season.

“For a lot of us, this is the last time we get to take the cars out the garage,” said Adam Markle of Mazon. “We don’t like our paint jobs getting messed up because of road grime and salt.”

The Morris Cruise Night Committee plans to expand over the course of the next season through increased awareness and support from volunteers.

As clouds continued to roll in, a light drizzle began to fall, prompting many to cover their rides and take off.

Tom Kinzler, event chairman, stated that although the weather was not ideal, most everything went as planned.

“We love organizing the event and giving families something to do for the weekend. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and we’re

already thinking of next year’s outing,” Kinzler said.

While patrons lounged in front of their cars, many employed the use of gas and charcoal grills, often feeding those around them while sharing laughs.

Albert Loeffel of Plainfield used the event as a place to meet up with his seldom-seen uncle, Aaron Loeffel.

“It’s great to be able to bring our cars, hang out for a bit and have a meal,” said Albert Loeffel. “We spent a lot

of time arguing about who’s car goes faster.”

As heavier rain fell, the crowd made a mass exodus, filling Route 6 with an odd assortment of shiny and sporty transportation.

Kinzler remarked the Fall Classic made a positive impact.

“We can see people helped by the fundraising from the event, and it’s a beautiful thing,” Kinzler said. “We just hope everyone comes back next year.”

Channahon man charged with domestic battery

CHANNAHON – A man was arrested early Monday after authorities allege he beat up his quadriplegic brother.

Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said authorities were called shortly after 1 a.m. to a disturbance in the 24400 block of Rock Ridge Court.

“A witness said the 50-yearold victim kept yelling ‘Help, I’m being hit,’ ” Wold said. The victim reportedly told officers Dallas E. Dunavan, 43, had become frustrated over taking care of him and started pushing and punching him, according to Wold.

Wold said Dunavan appeared to be intoxicated and threatened to fight with police.

“He stated he’d just been shaking the bed that had to be cleaned,” Wold said.

The victim was examined by paramedics, but was not hospitalized. Dunavan was arrested on a charge of domestic battery and booked into the Will County jail.

Earlier this year, Dunavan pleaded guilty to battery and resisting arrest for a December 2013 incident in Channahon.

Wold said Monday the victim in that incident was a different relative.

Court records show Dunavan is on probation for that conviction.

Anthony joins effort to block redistribution MORRIS – State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, has joined a bipartisan coalition of more than two dozen House lawmakers in support of House Resolution 1276 calling for members to oppose Senate Bill 16, a massive rewrite of the school funding formula that determines

how General State Aid (GSA) is distributed to Illinois’ school districts.

If Senate Bill 16 is enacted, schools in Anthony’s district; which includes portions of Kendall, Will, Grundy and LaSalle counties; stand to lose more than $1.134 million in total funding.

The bill cleared the Illinois Senate in late-May but was not brought for a vote in the House of Representatives. However, it is likely a revised version of the bill will emerge during the General Assembly’s November veto session, according to a news release from Anthony’s office.

“Springfield should not be in the business of picking winners and losers when it comes to our kids’ education,” Anthony said in the release. “We want every student in Illinois to achieve academic success and be prepared for college and the workforce.

However, Senate Bill 16 is not the answer to the challenge of school funding reform. Taking local tax dollars away from our schools and giving them to other parts of the state would devastate our local school districts and lead to higher property taxes to make up the difference. We’re teaming up with legislators in both parties to fight this and protect local schools.”

House Resolution 1276 specifically opposes SB16 and encourages a comprehensive and fair funding reform process that is inclusive of all stakeholder points of view.

Anthony and his colleagues have launched a petition drive to give parents and taxpayers an opportunity to have their voice heard in opposition to the bill.

“Doing church during the day was a pretty difficult thing for me to pull off,” O’Sullivan said.

Not only can O’Sullivan attend Sunday services, but she, her husband, Bob, and their daughter, Cheyenne, play worship music for the service twice a month. They now spend more time together as a family, both at the services and during the week rehearsing.

“I have always been a person of faith,” O’Sullivan said, “and I think it’s very important to go and hear a good, solid message from the Bible. It helps you in every phase of your life.”

Ferguson said the Sunday evening service also allows parents with child custody issues to more easily worship each week with their entire family, rather than just every other weekend.

They now meet in the school at the same time as the adults meet for the service, he added.

Started as a daughter church of First Christian Church in Morris, The Village Christian Church averaged about 100 people on Sundays in its first months, but it grew quickly, Ferguson said.

Within three years, mem-

bers moved their services from Minooka Junior High School’s cafeteria to its gymnasium and then added a second Sunday morning service. Three years after that, services moved to the school’s larger gym. By last August, the church was averaging 400 attendees.

“Quite honestly, our dreams at the beginning were that we would just make it,” Ferguson said. “You hope and pray that it’s going to work. Now I would say my dreams are that it will

MINOOKA – “Man, we really miss our church, but our kids have soccer or football practice.”

It was a refrain Nate Ferguson, pastor at The Village Christian Church in Minooka, often heard. So to accommodate the needs and schedules of the church’s members and future members, Ferguson added a Sunday night service last month, increasing his Sunday attendance by about 70 people, for a total of 470, he said.

The church turns 10 on Oct. 17.

“It’s the same sermon, same everything – just a different option for people to be able to be consistent with their worship,” Ferguson said. “If you can’t make it in the morning, then come in the evening.”

Bob Gessner of Minooka said he loves the option. An active volunteer and coach with Channahon baseball and Chanooka Braves youth football, Gessner found his Sunday mornings consumed with sports more than half the year.

“My day ends around 4:30 on Sunday,” he said, “so now I can go to church.”

Gessner said his children, ages 14 and 9, love the church’s youth programs. The suppers offered for a nominal fee right before the Sunday night services are a big plus, he said.

Sarah O’Sullivan of Morris also attends The Village Christian Church on Sunday nights, since she works most Sunday mornings. She called the eve-

To that end, The Village Christian Church recently purchased 10 acres of property on Bell Road, a quarter mile north of Route 6, and is planning to break ground this spring, with a move-in date of late 2015, Ferguson said.

Ferguson said members will rejoice when they have their own building. Since its beginning, The Village Christian Church has set up a complete church in the school every Sunday morning, then taken it all down again at noon.

The logistics are extensive.

Crews arrive each Sunday at 6:30 a.m. and roll in everything they need from a trailer – sound equipment, lighting, items for the children’s ministry and things needed for the coffee area. They even assemble a stage.

“It’s especially hard when it’s cold and dark outside and the trailer door is frozen shut,” Ferguson said. “The last winter we had just about killed us.”

Kaneland regained the lead on its opening possession after halftime, capping a six-play, 54-yard drive in 2:39 with a 7-yard pass from junior quarterback Jake Marczuk to senior receiver Connor Fedderly. The Knights also scored

on the game’s first drive – a 37-yard connection between Marczuk and Fedderly.

Fedderly grabbed Kaneland’s final TD, as well, a 15-yarder with 1:07 to play that drew the Knights within the final margin on Drew Franklin’s point-after. That reception came on the heels of Fedderly’s 38-yard catch through three Redskins defenders and Marczuk’s fourth-down conversion pass to Brock Harner on a broken play.

MORRIS – Morris senior quarterback Griffin Sobol gingerly raised his hands for a gritty game of show and tell after Friday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 football game at Kaneland.

“Tell you what, that Kaneland defense, I’m going to be in the most pain I’ll ever be in after a game tomorrow.

They came at me,” Sobol said.

“I mean, you can see by my knuckles. They’re all bloody.”

For Sobol and the Redskins it was the kind of pain that hurt so good. Morris edged Kaneland, 26-21, to keep its postseason hopes flickering, a result that simultaneously ended the Knights’ bid for another postseason.

Morris (3-4, 1-2) will host Sycamore on Friday needing the same result, then another win in Week 9 against winless LaSalle-Peru. The Redskins boast a formidable playoff streak, having not endured consecutive losing seasons since the late 1970s. More recently, Morris missed the playoffs in 2000 and 2013.

“We knew both teams were in the same position, so we really wanted to come out and stick it to them at the start,” Redskins junior defensive lineman Ryan Niewinski said. “I mean, give props to them, they’re a great team and really made plays at the end.”

The Redskins enjoyed an edge, too. Good things come in threes, the adage goes, and that was the case in the second quarter.

Bears not willing to lose Let’s set up a few ground rules if we’re going to talk about Sunday’s Bears-Falcons game.

First and foremost, it doesn’t matter how good or bad the Bears and Falcons are as teams for purposes of this conversation. Both started the season with playoff aspirations. This was a must-win situation for both teams.

The Bears traveled to Atlanta, where the Falcons were undefeated and are a far superior team to what they are on the road.

The Bears went out and got their win, and they did it with skill, they did it with effort and they did it with panache.

The Falcons stunk, in large part because the Bears were unwilling to lose.

The Bears’ defense was heroic. Not great, probably nowhere near playoff-caliber, but c’mon people, their top four linebackers and No. 1 cornerback were on the sideline in street clothes and their No. 1 safety went out, again, early in the third quarter.

Hey, I’m sorry, too, that Chris Conte is the Bears’ No. 1 safety, but that’s the world we

Undermanned, undertrained and undertrusted, the makeshift Bears “D” held the Falcons to 93 yards on 18 plays on five possessions in the first half, resulting in a field goal, three punts and a time expired.

Can we please get a “For he’s a jolly good fellow” for Mel Tucker? Although everyone keeps taking shots at the Bears’ defensive coordinator, the guy’s been coaching his butt off since the second half of the 49ers game in Week 2.

Cornerback Kyle Fuller is a lock for All-Rookie and might be heading to a Pro Bowl.

Most impressive to me was linebacker Darryl Sharpton.

He wasn’t great, and when they grade the tape, he probably will come up as pretty average when it came to making plays. But was there a less likely candidate on the roster to make the defensive calls and lead his troops? Sharpton, signed Sept. 25, led by example

and with aggression. Maybe he overran as many plays as he made, but he played fast and his teammates followed him.

Next up, how ’bout them skill position boys?

Atlanta easily could have been Brandon Marshall’s Waterloo. Instead, it was the receiver’s resurrection.

Marshall showed up early, he showed up big and he showed up often. I have no idea whether it’s because he finally was healthy – he insisted he was last week, and we know how that turned out – but just be thankful he’s back.

If it’s something else, let’s worry about it later because we saw what happens when Marshall is making plays and having fun.

Receiver Alshon Jeffery had his best game in weeks, as well, Matt Forte was everything you’d want at running back, tight end Martellus Bennett was Mr. Clutch, and when all that happens, receiver Josh Morgan is catching touchdown passes.

And, of course, none of that happens without the guy who deserves the most credit of all. Jay Cutler had to hear the

noise all week. He responded with one of his best games as a Bear. He finished 26-for-38 passing for 381 yards, a touchdown, a 109.6 passer rating and, most of all, no picks, no fumbles and nothing even vaguely resembling a brain fart.

The Bears’ season is saved, at least for another week.

Do we have any idea whether Cutler will throw a pick at the most inopportune time that costs a game next week at home vs. the Dolphins or in two weeks in New England?

Nope. The Bears could be right back in a must-win situation again in a week or two. Sixty minutes can’t erase eight-plus seasons.

There is plenty of work to do before we’ll count on these kind of games from Cutler every week. But if you’re going to throw stones, you have to throw roses, too. For 60 minutes Sunday in Atlanta, the Bears were who we hoped they’d be.

By MARK JOHNSON Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – That elusive fifth victory did not come Friday for Seneca, which lost 40-20 to Wilmington for its first losing streak since the beginning of the 2012 season.

After starting 4-1, the Fighting Irish had four opportunities to become playoff eligible. Half of those opportunities are gone.

Yet because of the opponent and the way the game played out, Friday offered some hope the Irish can get win No. 5 in the final two weeks.

Wilmington entered the game 6-0, ranked third in the state in Class 3A by The Associated Press and with a 208-72 point differential against its first six opponents. When the Wildcats built a 14-0 lead and a 98 to negative-5 advantage in total yards by the 5:38 mark of the opening quarter, it appeared they were on their way to another lopsided win.

But the Irish did not go quietly, cutting their deficit to 14-7 in the second quarter and to 2720 late in the third. In the process, they proved to their coach, Ted O’Boyle, that they possess some qualities that had not yet been shown this season.

“I saw something tonight that I haven’t seen yet,” O’Boyle said. “They finally

Plano will come to Seneca on Friday riding a three-game winning streak in which it has outscored its opponents 11630, but its three victims are a combined 3-18 overall, and the Reapers still are just 4-3 even with the hot streak. Seneca’s Week 9 opponent, Coal City, is a game better than the Irish at 5-2, but it lost to the Wildcats by a similar margin (26-7) earlier this season.

Playing the Wildcats as competitively as they did gave the Irish a confidence boost heading into their final two regular-season games. It reinforced their belief that they can play with anyone on their schedule.

“We’ve been down almost every single game, and our team, we will never give up,” se-

nior Zach Russell said. “That’s one thing we’re really good at.

Week 3 against Reed-Custer (a 14-12 Seneca win), we were down 14-0 pretty early, and we never gave up and came back and won it. That could have easily happened tonight, but without those 14 points, it would have been pretty interesting.”

Friday’s game also might have given the Irish another, more specific reason for boosted confidence. Russell, who splits time between quarterback and fullback for the Irish, entered with just 13 pass completions on the season. He at one point completed six in a row against Wilmington.

Russell’s final line (6 for 15, 64 yards) suffered when he missed on his final eight attempts as the Wildcats, leading with time winding down, focused their defense on the pass.

He felt what happened before that was enough for optimism that the Irish, who have more than three times as many rushing yards as passing yards this season, can move forward with a more balanced offense.

“Our throwing, obviously, it’s picked up a lot,” Russell said. “Our receivers are getting open. I’m hitting them pretty good. This is definitely our best throwing game. … It opens up our whole offense. Teams have to respect our passing.”

Carcillo happy to be Hawks’ enforcer again

By HERB GOULD for the Chicago Sun Times “The decline and fall of the hockey enforcer” is almost as time-worn these days as the phrase “hockey fight” itself.

And it puzzles Daniel Carcillo, who has returned to Chicago as the Blackhawk most likely to drop the gloves.

“Everyone’s talking about it,” Carcillo said Monday after the Hawks’ practice. “I don’t know why it’s happening now.

[It’s not like] it’s the dawn of the UFC, where guys get into an octagon and punch each other to the ground. It’s not like we just started fighting 20 years ago. This has been in the game forever. There’s a place for it.”

That said, Carcillo, who was re-signed as a free agent Oct. 4, knows he needs to bring more to the game than tough-guy stuff, and he feels he can do that. He showed a bit of it with a goal Saturday night against

Buffalo.

While saying enforcers are on the wane, coach Joel Quenneville quickly added that toughness still matters.

“It’s evolved for the last 20 years,” Quenneville said. “The importance of having that one-dimensional tough guy is eroding. You’ve got to be able to play, and Danny can make plays and score goals. [But] he

can bring a little element of toughness at the same time.”

And despite the trend away from toughness, Carcillo believes there ought to be a place in the game for it.

“I never, ever wanted to be a guy who’d just go out there and fight,’’ he said. “But the guys that do our job make certain guys superstars. To remove us from the game ...

to have guys run around and hit and agitate ... what you see now is a culture of guys doing that and not backing it up.

“They don’t have to fight anymore. That’s the scary thing, not only for (tough) guys like us being pushed out, but also for superstars.

Guys are going to start taking shots and then there are no consquences.”

KANKAKEE – Morris girls volleyball picked up a second-place finish with a 3-1 record Saturday at the Bishop McNamara Invitational.

In pool play, Morris (17-11) went 3-0, beating Wilmington (25-18, 25-15), Bishop McNamara (25-22, 25-12) and Kankakee (25-9, 25-15). The Redskins lost to Keith Country Day, 25-18, 25-21 in the championship match.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The purpose of a state constitution is to establish a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 8.1 OF ARTICLE I OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I – BILL OF RIGHTS SECTION 8.1. CRIME VICTIMS’ VICTIM’S RIGHTS. (a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process.

(2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law.

(3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings.

(4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution.

(5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing.

(6) (5) The right to be notified of information about the conviction, the sentence, the imprisonment, and the release of the accused.

(7) (6) The right to timely disposition of the case following the arrest of the accused.

(8) (7) The right to be reasonably protected from the accused throughout the criminal justice process.

(9) The right to have the safety of the victim and the victim’s family considered in denying or fixing the amount of bail, determining whether to release the defendant, and setting conditions of release after arrest and conviction.

(10) (8) The right to be present at the trial and all other court proceedings on the same basis as the accused, unless the victim is to testify and the court determines that the victim’s testimony would be materially affected if the victim hears other testimony at the trial.

(11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice.

(12) (10) The right to restitution. (b) The victim has standing to assert the rights enumerated in subsection (a) in any court exercising jurisdiction over the case. The court shall promptly rule on a victim’s request.

The victim does not have party status. The accused does not have standing to assert the rights of a victim. The court shall not appoint an attorney for the victim under this Section. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to alter the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the prosecuting attorney The General Assembly may provide by law for the enforcement of this Section. (c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse.

2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing.

3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen.

The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information.

2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction.

3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense.

The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

OPINION Sigh of relief on Rauner’s taxes answer The most important question asked of Bruce Rauner during last week’s gubernatorial debate in Peoria was posed by Jamey Dunn-Thomason of Illinois Issues magazine.

My pal pointed out that Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) had cut taxes across the board on the theory that it would boost the state’s economy. His idea hasn’t worked.

What’s happened instead is a huge revenue shortfall which has forced gigantic state budget cuts and an economy that now lags the rest of the country. So, what did Rauner think of Brownback’s policy, Dunn-Thomason wondered.

It has seemed to me over the past several months Rauner is a true believer in “Brownbackism.” He’s proposed slashing the income tax over four years from 5 to 3 percent, without regard for the budgetary pain he would cause, and predicted that doing so would so intensely stimulate the state’s economy that all those lost revenues would magically be replaced by new income from growth.

What we’ve all been hearing out of Rauner to date appears to be ideologically driven nonsense designed to appeal to a gullible and angry public. He absolutely cannot do what he says he’ll do unless he intends to drive the pension systems into bankruptcy, but I’m not sure he can legally get away with that.

Rauner also has pledged big spending increases for P-12 education, higher education, infrastructure, natural resources, corrections and a host of other state programs.

How the heck can he do that if he plans to slash state revenues?

OK, let’s go back to last week’s debate.

“I don’t agree with the tax policies that were put in place in Kansas,” Rauner declared in response to Dunn-Thomason’s question.

In other words, tax cuts without regard for consequences is not in the cards.

Rauner then returned to his familiar talking points about looking “at the entire tax code” to close corporate loopholes and “broaden the base, lower the rates.”

Putting that into context with his Kansas statement, to me at least, supported what I’ve been hearing about what he actually intends to do with the budget next year.

A tax on services will naturally dampen growth and will lower the overall burden on the wealthy, and that’s a totally legit debate to have if it comes to that.

I admit that I’m counting on the fact that he’s lying through his teeth about taxes, and I acknowledge that even a broad service tax will replace only about a third of the income tax cut he says he wants. But when he publicly rejected the Kansas model last week, I breathed a quiet sigh of relief.

Dear Doctor K: I’m a woman in my 30s who has suffered from sinus headaches for years. Allergy medications haven’t helped. What else can I try?

Dear Reader: Seasonal allergies can cause sinus congestion, sneezing and a runny nose. But when you experience pain and pressure in your head, it may be time to consider other causes. That’s because sinus problems do not usually cause headaches.

At least, they don’t cause what most people refer to when they use the term “headache.” Most people with sinus congestion refer to “head congestion,” not headache.

I spoke to my Harvard Medical School colleague Dr. William Kormos. He said that if you’re regularly experiencing headaches with nasal congestion, you may have migraine headaches. That’s because migraines can cause sinus pressure and clear discharge, just as they can cause the eyes to get red and teary.

People with migraine headaches are often misdiagnosed with sinus problems. That may be because many people don’t associate sinus pain and pressure with migraine headaches. In fact, more than 80 percent of migraine sufferers report sinus pain and pressure. Half also experience nasal congestion or a runny nose. To add to the confusion, weather changes are common migraine triggers. So your migraines might follow a pattern you associate with -- and mistake for -- seasonal allergies.

A doctor should be able to diagnose the type of headaches you are experiencing. He or she will make the diagnosis based on an accurate, detailed description of your symptoms. For example, nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light or sound are clues that your pain is related to migraines.

Migraine headaches

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff should be treated as soon as symptoms begin, as any delay can make the headache harder to treat.

The mainstay of migraine treatment is a group of drugs called triptans.

Another crucial part of migraine management is prevention. Certain activities, foods and other factors can trigger migraines.

Identifying and avoiding your headache triggers may help reduce how often you have migraines and how badly they hurt. Common triggers include: • Caffeine (either too much or less than usual); • Certain foods and drinks, including those that contain tyramine (aged cheeses and meats, fermented drinks); sulfites (preserved foods, wines); and monosodium glutamate (MSG); • Stress, or (more often) relaxing following a stressful day; • Hormone levels (which may be affected by menstrual cycles or hormone-containing medication); • Lack of sleep; • Travel; • Changes in weather or altitude; • Overuse of pain medications.

Also ask your doctor about preventive medications.

These are prescription drugs taken every day to reduce the number and the severity of migraines. The drugs, also all used to treat other conditions, include beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, anti-seizure drugs and some drugs used for depression.
