By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – After last week’s fire that damaged the Lone Star restaurant in Channahon, the local fire department has started a fundraiser for the 30 employees now without a job.

As of Monday afternoon, $400 had been raised toward a $15,000 goal for the “Lone Star Family Fund” on the online fundraiser page GoFundMe. Channahon Mayor Missy Schumacher said the funds raised will go directly to the employees who will be without a job with the ongoing rebuilding efforts.

“I spoke with [owner Themis Sparagis] Friday morning.

He specifically wanted to make sure people know this account is for his employees. He has insurance. He doesn’t want anything for himself,” Schumacher said.

Schumacher said Ryan Jandura, with the Channahon Fire Department, was responsible for starting the account. Jandura was not immediately available for comment Monday.

Schumacher said interested people can donate to the GoFundMe account online or through another fund account established at M&M Bank, 25140 W. Channon Drive. The bank is accepting donations of any size for the Lone Star Family Fund. The Sparagis family said Thursday they plan to reopen Lone Star, but did not know how soon. Schumacher said Monday she hopes the donations can ease any concerns for the 30 or so employees without a job, and the Sparagis fam-

Morris woman talks about her 1st year after being diagnosed with breast cancer

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A lot has happened in the year since Morris resident Tricia “Tee Tee” Shannon was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her daughter, Peighton Shannon, graduated high school and headed off to college. Her niece, Carson Shannon, gave birth to her first great-niece, Sawyer Shannon.

These were things Tricia Shannon said she was fighting for when she faced breast cancer in July 2014.

“I was lucky I caught it early,” Shannon said. “I was diagnosed on July 3, and I had a double mastectomy in August.”

Shannon said she is one of the lucky ones. She caught it early, and so far hasn’t had to face radiation or chemotherapy. Instead, she had surgery and will be taking the drug Tamoxifen, which is used to fight breast cancer, for the next five years.

“I had an odd feeling, I can’t really explain it,” Shannon said. “I called my doctor and asked for a mammogram.

They didn’t get it scheduled so I called them again and got in.

That’s when they found it.”

She said she never felt a lump, and never had any signs or symptoms that said breast cancer. She just felt something wasn’t right. She’s glad she listened to her intuition.

“I tell all my friends and the girls in the family now to get checked, and keep your mammogram appointments,” Shannon said. “The earlier you find it, the better.”

According to Cancer.org, an “estimated 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the U.S. during 2015; about 2,350 new cases are expected in men. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women.”

Local programs help breast cancer patients

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – When Samantha of “Sex and the City” lost her hair during breast cancer treatment, she took the opportunity to dazzle at her boyfriend Smith’s movie premier by sporting a flamboyant, drop-dead pink and blonde wig.

Other women may choose a more subtle temporary hair replacement – a wig of their natural hair color, a scarf or a turban. Some go bald, preferring not to cover their shiny scalps.

Whatever they choose, it’s usually a big decision, and there are programs and boutiques to help them with hair, makeup, skin care, lingerie, shapers and more.

Real-life experiences

Krystl Constantino of Joliet went to Reflections Boutique, which is run by Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates.

Constantino is battling breast cancer – which she found with a self-exam – and is getting ready for her last chemotherapy treatment.

“They did a great job at helping me with a wig,” Constantino said. “I didn’t want to do anything drastic. ... I’m Italian, and I had shoulder-length, dark brown hair. ... [My wig] is about the same color and a little bit shorter. I have a good

hair day every day.”

Constantino has two children – ages 2 and 5 – and because she didn’t want them to see all the effects of her cancer and its treatments, she chose a wig that looked most like her.

The boutique also helped fit her for prosthetic breasts after her mastectomy and before her implants.

“It makes you feel so much better,” Constantino said. “It’s hard enough having a diagnosis like this. It’s nice to have a place like Reflections to go to and deal with all the other aspects of it.”

Breast cancer survivor and Morris resident Mary Jo Schuster said her cousin was a “cancer sister” who told her about the Look Good Feel Better program offered all over the country.

A doctor began the program in 1989, according to the program’s website. He had a cancer patient so overwhelmed by her physical appearance from cancer treatment side effects that she wouldn’t leave her hospital room. He organized a makeover for her that transformed her look – and her outlook.

The program today offers more than 15,400 workshops in more than 2,500 locations nationwide. It’s run by the Personal Care Products Council, which is a charitable organization supported by the cosmetics industry in cooperation

“Cancer treatments are full of a lot of little indignities,” she said. “It’s nice to have that pampering. And you’re in there with other gals. It’s good to find cancer sisters. I think they can be invaluable.

It’s good to surround yourself with positive people.”

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – In 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 210,828 people were diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States and 157,423 died from it.

But one area oncologist is optimistic.

“We are finding newer ways to treat it,” said Dr. Nafisa Burhani, oncologist with Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates. “As we discover new mutations, we can develop targeted therapy, and many drugs have come out recently that target these specific mutations. Chemotherapy treatment is becoming more personalized. It’s very exciting, and I think in the next few years, it will get better.”

Morris resident Gina Lombardi is grappling with it now.

Her daughter’s employers, Aurelio’s Pizza in Morris, are holding a fundraiser for her Friday. Her cancer was diagnosed at Stage 4 last summer, and the treatments are expensive.

“She had a chest cold, and she had a horrible cough. She thought it was bronchitis,” said her daughter, Jordan Bellos Lombardi. “She couldn’t breathe, so she went to the hospital.”

A chest X-ray showed a 6-inch tumor in her lungs.

“She said she knew right away it was cancer,” Jordan said.

Cancer symptoms were

present two years before the diagnosis, Jordan said, but they were attributed to other conditions. Lombardi’s back pain was likely because of the many tumors that had metastasized to her back. Gina said Lombardi also has tumors on her ribs, right airway and lymph nodes. And that’s not all.

“She lost like 60 pounds in three months,” Jordan said.

Nevertheless, Jordan said Lombardi is in good spirits.

Jordan is taking a semester off college as a history major to help care for her mother. Her sister, Jade Staskl Lombardi, is helping, too.

Jordan said her mother has been a smoker all her life, and that, according to Burhani, is the main cause of lung cancer.

“Smoking is the biggest risk,” Burhani said. “We’ve seen a rise in the amount of lung cancer in nonsmokers recently, as well. We don’t know why. Exposure to smoking, especially to a child, does increase the risk of lung cancer, and so does radon and environmental pollution. ... Lung disease can also increase the risk of cancer from scarring in the lung tissue.”

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is categorized into small cell cancer and non-small cell cancer.

Each grows differently and is treated differently. Small cell cancer is less common, but it is an aggressive one.

It is, however, more responsive to chemotherapy and ra-

diation therapy, according to the CDC. A cure is difficult to achieve because it’s likely to have spread by the time of diagnosis. Current treatments do not

Area dentist restarts free magic show this weekend

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Dr. Mark Kaschube lives a life of magic and wonder, both personally and professionally.

After a three-year sabbatical that he spent with his 7and 9-year-old children Alexander and Vienne, he will be hitting the magic stage again Saturday by offering, for free, a magic show.

“Twenty-five years ago it all started with my staff taking old games and creating a Halloween-themed day. For the Bozo buckets they used pumpkins,” Kaschube said.

“We are going back to the smaller show and kids will be treated to pumpkin jumpies, a 30-foot dragon slide, and of course Einstein, my camel, will be there giving rides.”

In addition to being a dentist as well as a magician who has performed throughout the world, Kaschube has helped a Wisconsin farm rescue its animals that have served as show performers – and often

“I had someone ask me what it is with dentists and exotic animals, after the big national story about the dentist and the lion this year,” said the magic dentist. “I explained mine are different, they are rescues. Instead of letting them be euthanized or making them into rugs for rich people, I help purchase them and feed them.”

In addition to Einstein giving rides, Kaschube said people can expect a surprise visit from another one of the rescued animals.

“Life has been good to me,” he said. “When you can use your hobby to make a difference, it’s important. I’d rather live my faith than practice it.”

The show will be missing one of it’s lead performers this year, as the dentist’s “evil

sister” assistant, who has always shared the stage with him, will have to watch from the audience.

Kaschube said the show is dedicated to her this year.

After a recent diagnosis of breast cancer, she had surgery a week ago so she will be unable to perform.

While magic takes center stage, the Off Broadway Dancers from Coal City again will offer their assistance in the entertainment portion.

It was also hinted that a temporary position of magic assistant may be filled after he had time to review an application for the position filled out by Channahon Village President Missey Schumacher.

“She joked about being cut in half when she filled out the application,” he said. “I warned her to be careful what you wish for.”

He said there is nothing to worry about, however, and if anyone had any doubts about his abilities they could ask his half sister.

Marseilles, Exelon open new inclusive park

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MARSEILLES – The Danielson Stevenson Park in Marseilles was four decades in the making.

On Monday, the city of Marseilles and Exelon Generation held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on a piece of land the Danielson and Stevenson families donated long ago with the hope that a city park would one day reside on it, Marseilles Mayor Jim Trager said.

“After 43 years, it has happened,” Trager said.

Megan Borchers, communications manager at LaSalle Generation Station, said Exelon has been involved in the project for about a year and a half. Borchers said one day she happened to be listening to the radio and heard former Marseilles Mayor Patti Smith requesting financial aid to build a portion of the park.

Exelon Generation donated about $45,000 to help pay for the playground area that meets Americans with Disabilities Act standards. This includes one wheelchair-accessible swing, a molded bucket seat and a rubber surfacing mat, which is accessible to those with disabilities.

“It fits in with Exelon’s goal of diversity and inclusion, which are our key pillars,” Borchers said. “We’re excited to see kids come and play here.”

The park was supposed to be next to the water tower nearby, but after the construction of a water treatment facility, there was little room left over, according to Marseilles Recreation Board President Ed Cavanaugh. Smith and Cavanaugh decided to create a federal grant application, which was awarded to the city. The bathroom and traditional playground area was funded through ac-

“Thanks to all of this, we now have a park that all can enjoy,” Trager said.

There still is space left to build on the park. The city has discussed ideas for future expansion in the empty space but nothing is imminent, Cavanaugh said. There’s also a gazebo and hopscotch court. Children were playing Monday morning at the park, located at 621 10th

St. The rubberized surface on the ADA-compliant play area has to dry for a couple days before it can be used. Workers from Meak Playground Surfacing were on hand during the ribbon-cutting ceremony installing a final top layer on the surface. The ground outside the play areas is mostly dirt, but that will change.

“Hopefully in the spring we’ll be able to enjoy it with grass on the ground,” Cavanaugh said.

Borchers and Trager said they believe parents and guardians of children with disabilities will travel from outside Marseilles to enjoy the park because it’s one of, if not the, first in the county.

Everyone knows someone victimized by identity theft: a neighbor who charged coffee at the airport, then discovers fraudulent credit card purchases weeks later; a friend whose social security number was used to file a fake tax return.

“Identity theft is the most reported crime in the U.S. About 15 million people’s identities are used fraudulently each year,” says Randy Matravers, assistant vice president, Grundy Bank.

“Annual losses total $50 billion; that’s double since 2012. Individually, this means that one in 14 people are affected, and often feel violated, suffering an average loss of $3,500.”

Instead of being overwhelmed or fearful, Matravers urges people to actively safeguard their identities, and to know what resources are available and steps to take if identity theft is suspected.

“We’ve shared information with the community that the government makes available through its website www.identitytheft. gov.”

What should you do if you

suspect fraud? Identitytheft.gov advises: “Step 1: Call the companies where you know fraud occurred (speak to the fraud department).

Explain that someone stole your identity. Ask them to close or freeze your accounts. Step 2: Place a fraud alert and request your credit report. (The website lists the three credit bureaus.

Call one and it will alert the other two, and send you your report.)

Step 3: Report identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission by calling 1-877-438-4338 to make a report. Step 4: File a report with your local police department.

Bring a government-issued photo ID, and proof of theft.”

To begin repairing the damage, the website advises: “Close new accounts opened in your name, remove bogus charges from your accounts, correct your credit report, and consider adding an extended fraud alert or credit freeze.

“Depending on your situation, you might need to take additional steps to resolve tax-related identity theft, report a misused Social Security number, stop debt collectors from trying to collect debts you don’t owe, and replace government issued IDs.”

Linda Shannon is a colon cancer survivor. Shannon had a test to check for heredity, so she could let her daughter know if it was a concern she needed to be aware of.

“The test came back negative and Peighton doesn’t need to worry,” Shannon said. “But I’ve told her to make sure she always gets checked.”

Still, the recovery process hasn’t been easy.

Shannon said she has had to deal with some emotional issues she didn’t consider when she was diagnosed, including the feeling of guilt and fear.

“I’m a positive person, but when I had to go get a colonoscopy I found myself a little paranoid. That’s a funny emotion that I’m not used to,” she said.

“When I had the colonoscopy,

I put on a brave face but the thoughts played games with me emotionally.”

She said while she knows she is blessed and fortunate to not have to face chemotherapy or radiation, she also feels guilty that she “got to take the easy street.”

She said on the flip side, she also has become more emotional on the positive things in life, such as love.

“I got to see Peighton graduate, go to college, I’ve been here to watch as Carson went through her pregnancy and had Sawyer,” she said. “I cry easier, and more often. With the time off work I got to be there for Carson and Sawyer, and it makes things OK. It’s helped me mentally.”

Shannon said she will continue with regular visits to her oncologist every three months for the next five years, when she hopes she can add the title of survivor after her name.

Caring about one’s appearance when ill has nothing to do with vanity.

“Your appearance is a constant reminder that you have cancer,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy said Look Good Feel Better teachers are licensed cosmetologists or aestheticians who receive special training for the class.

According to the Look Good Feel Better website, group workshops for those with cancer include two hours of skin care and makeup tips, instruction on options relating to hair loss, nail care and suggestions on flattering ways to use clothing.

“We help guide them, and they do it themselves,” McCarthy said.

There also are tutorials on

the program’s website, she said. The emotional support of the classes can be a nice side benefit.

“It’s not a support group,” McCarthy said, “but sometimes you just want to get together and laugh and do girlie things. They leave feeling so good. Even their walk is different.”

Morris Hospital certified breast health nurse navigator Terri Jacob said a whole multidisciplinary team is necessary to support women through breast cancer, including plastic surgeons in some cases.

“Reconstruction after a mastectomy is a profoundly personal choice,” Jacob said.

“We urge women to discuss it with their entire team.”

Breast reconstruction can be initiated at the time of the mastectomy or years later, she said.

“It’s a very emotional time for women,” Jacob said.

“Many women find themselves dealing with body image. It’s about a sense of the whole. ...

Returning them to their new normal as soon as possible is important.”

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St. in Morris with Pastor Gerald Steele officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born Sept. 14, 1919, in Morris, he was the son of Harry and Theresa(Jackson)Baker. He graduated from Morris High School. He married Evelyn Thorson on May 14, 1944, in

Independence, Kansas. They lived all of their married life in Morris. Leroy was a veteran of W.W. II and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. For 40 years he was employed at Diamond International in Morris.

Surviving are one son, Terry Baker of Morris; two daughters, Jill Baker and Kathi (Paul) Claire both of Morris; one niece, Jan Smith of Watertown, WI; one nephew, Douglas (Pam) Baker of Bluffton, S. Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Lois Steffes of Morris and Norma (John)Bremenkamp of Washington; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn on Aug. 28, 2000; one daughter, Lynn Baker in infancy; one brother, Glenn Baker. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1024, Masons Cedar Lodge 124 AF & AM and Dwight Country Club.

Memorials may be given to Grundy Community Volunteer Hospice or American Heart Association.

He enjoyed golf, working around the house and any project that kept him busy. He also looked forward to Thursday lunch at Ebby’s with the boys and spending time with his family. Please spend time with those you love while you have them.

James Taylor’s mother dies at Martha’s Vineyard home at 92 CHILMARK, Mass. – The mother of Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter James Taylor has died at age 92.

Gertrude Woodard Taylor died over the weekend surrounded by four generations of family at her home “overlooking her beloved Stonewall Pond” in Chilmark on Martha’s Vineyard, the “Fire & Rain” singer said on his website.

She died of complications from old age, her daughter, Kate Taylor, told the Vineyard Gazette.

James Taylor said his mother “devoted her life to her marriage and her five children, four boys and a girl.”

Three of her children, James Taylor, Kate Taylor and Livingston Taylor, became professional musicians.

Trudy, as she was known, also was “an accomplished painter, a weaver (spinning her own yarn), a photographer, a distinguished horticulturist and a killer cook,

One of her sons died before her.

1964 Cy Young winner Dean Chance dies at age 74 The ASSOCIATED PRESS WOOSTER, Ohio – Dean Chance, who won the 1964 Cy Young Award and later pitched a no-hitter, died Sunday. He was 74.

The funeral home handling the arrangements near where he lived in Ohio confirmed Chance died. There were no details on the cause of death.

Chance died two months after being at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, for his induction into the Angels Hall of Fame.

Conkle Funeral Homes and the U.S. Golf Association said Spuzich died Oct. 6 at her Indianapolis home.

Over the last several months, the state budget has been the topic of conversation among area nonprofits. It’s a hard topic to ignore when it causes local agencies to change programming and cut staff. Grundy County has many organizations that serve residents and do an excellent job of doing so; however, what happens when the state or federal funding runs out? Mental health facilities close, meals stopped being served, children go without early intervention therapies, and the list goes on and on.

The Community Foundation of Grundy County is interested in educating the community on philanthropy, giving and area nonprofits, which is one reason we started a Youth Philanthropy program. We believe having a philanthropic community is important and philanthropy should start at a young age.

But what if you are not so young anymore? How can you help area nonprofits to ensure your children and grandchildren have future access to local services if and when they are needed?

In the short term, you can give monetarily to those organizations whose missions you believe in or those you have received help from in the past.

FALL SPORTS Rob Oesterle Now that the calendar has said October for the last couple of weeks or so and the leaves are beginning to turn colors, the thoughts on the local sports scene turns to the postseason.

Starting on the gridiron, if the playoffs were to start today, only Coal City would be in the playoffs among the four local teams, according to the most recent IHSA playoff outlook. But, with two weeks remaining, there still is a distinct possibility that both Morris and Minooka can play their way in. Neither task will be an easy one, however.

Morris, with a 3-4 record, has to win its final two games on the road against Sycamore this Friday night and LaSalle-Peru next week. That would give the Redskins a 5-4 record, and they should have plenty of playoff points, or opponent victories, to make the cutoff.

Meanwhile, Minooka (4-3) has two Southwest Prairie Conference games left, traveling to Oswego East on Friday before finishing up with a home game against Plainfield North next week. The Indians’ playoff point total isn’t nearly as high as Morris’, so the best bet for them will be to win both games to finish with six wins and not have to rely on points.

This week’s game against Lisle is also big for Coal City, even though they have four wins and a game with a struggling Seneca squad next week.

If the Coalers can beat Lisle this Friday, then the path to six wins looks good and points won’t come into play.

The postseason already has begun in boys and girls golf, with regionals taking place last week. Morris and Minooka’s boys teams advanced to Monday’s sectional play, as did the girls teams from Seneca and Minooka. The state finals will be this weekend in Bloomington-Normal for the boys and Decatur for the girls.

The Morris and Coal City volleyball teams will take part in the Class 3A Rich East Regional next week. slate is boys soccer. Newark starts it off at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Class 1A Serena Regional. The Norsemen, seeded second in their sub-sectional of the Peoria Christian Sectional, take on eighth-seeded Plano at 4:30. On Wednesday, Coal City seeded fourth in its sub-sectional of the Iroquois West Sectional, take on fifth-seeded Wilmington at 7 p.m. in the Iroquois West Regional.

Morris, which is looking for its fifth straight regional title, is seeded sixth in its 10-team sub-sectional of the Washington Sectional, and will take on fourth-seeded Streator on at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in LaSalle-Peru. The winner of the game will take on top-seeded Geneseo for the regional title at 6 p.m. Oct. 23.

In Class 3A, Minooka begins play this Friday. The Indians are seeded seventh in the nine-team sub-sectional of the Collinsville Sectional and will play host to eighth-seeded Joliet Central at 4:30 p.m. The winner of the game takes on top seed Normal Community

In girls volleyball, Gardner-South Wilmington is hosting a regional that feeds into the Class 1A Streator Woodland Sectional. The Panthers are seeded fourth in the sectional and will play the winner of Tri-Point and Illinois Lutheran at 7 p.m.

Oct. 27. The Serena Regional also feeds into the Woodland Sectional. Second-seeded Newark plays the Leland-Ottawa Marquette winner at 6 p.m.

In Class 2A, Seneca, seeded fourth in the Bishop McNamara Sectional, will play the winner of Wilmington and Momence at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Wilmington Regional.

In Class 3A, both Morris and Coal City are in the Rich East Regional, which feeds the Lincoln-Way West Sectional.

Morris, seeded 13th, plays 20th-seeded Chicago Agricultural Science Oct. 26 at 6 p.m., followed by 12th-seeded Coal City playing 21st-seeded Rich East right after at 7 p.m.

winner plays fourth-seeded Lincoln-Way West at 6 p.m. and the Coal City winner plays fifth-seeded Chicago Christian at 7 p.m. Minooka is seeded sixth in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way North Sectional and will play the winner of Thornton Fractional South and Bremen at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Lockport Regional.

In girls tennis this weekend, Coal City and Morris are part of the nine-team Ottawa Sectional, along with LaSalle-Peru, Mendota, Ottawa, St. Bede, Pontiac, Princeton and Streator. Minooka, meanwhile, plays in the 10-team Plainfield North Sectional, along with Bolingbrook, Joliet Catholic Academy, Joliet West, Neuqua Valley, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North, Plainfield South and Romeoville.

Cross country will begin running in the regionals on Oct. 24, with the boys and girls at the same sites. In Class 1A, Seneca will host a regional, with the girls at 10 a.m. and the boys at 11.

in the Oregon Sectional on Oct. 31. Gardner-South Wilmington will be at the Bishop McNamara Regional with girls at 10 a.m. and boys at 11, with qualifiers running at the Lisle Sectional.

In Class 2A, Morris will be at the Crete-Monee Regional, with the girls running at 1:30 p.m. and the boys at 2:30. The qualifiers will move on to the Normal U-High Sectional on Oct. 31 at Maxwell Park, girl at 10 and boys at 11. Minooka hosts a Class 3A regional at Channahon Community Park, with girls at 10 a.m. and boys at 10:45. The qualifiers will be at the Normal Community Sectional on Oct. 31 at Maxwell Park.

Finally, in girls swimming, the Morris co-op team, featuring swimmers from Morris, Minooka, Coal City and Seneca, will take part in the 13-team Lockport Sectional on Nov. 14.

Korte reaches 1,000 career kills at Bishop Mac tourney STAFF REPORTS KANKAKEE – The Morris volleyball team split four matches at the Bishop McNamara Tournament over the weekend, beating Kankakee, 25-17 25-10, and Wilmington, 24-26, 25-17, 15-13, while losing to tourney champ Joliet West, 25-20, 25-19, and Bradley-Bourbonnais, 25-21, 25-12.

Kaylin Korte, who already owns the school record for kills, added to her total with 56 and, in the process, topped 1,000 for her career. She also had 11 digs and five blocks “Kaylin reached her goal of 1,000 varsity kills in the first match,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “It’s a pretty amazing accomplishment and we are proud of her.”

Janelle Brehm had a total of 22 kills, 14 digs and four blocks, while Ashley Hood had 36 assists and eight digs.

Addison Polite had 43 assists, 21 digs, two aces and three kills.

Monday.

Rodgers left Sunday’s win over the Chiefs with the injury, which he suffered on a kickoff.

“I think he’s a guy who kind of surpassed probably our expectations and contributed on the field whether it was on offense or in the kick-

ing game,” Fox said. “He’s a guy that will be missed but over time he’ll get better and we’ll get back in the future.”

Rodgers was the team’s No. 2 running back.

He had 14 carries for 41 yards and one catch for 10 yards, while also playing a role on the kickoff return and punt coverage teams. Rodgers appeared in 11.6 percent of offensive snaps through five games.

“I think it affects everybody,” Fox said about the running back depth chart. “We’ll

That was quite some claim, but in today’s deal East has a chance to dangle a carrot that might cause a “revolution” between North and South.

First, though, this week we are wondering when declarer should ruff and when he should discard. This is another straightforward example. South is in four hearts. West leads the club jack, and the defenders keep playing the suit. What should declarer do?

Note North’s raise to two hearts.

With a weak hand, tell partner as quickly as possible. Yes, if South is 4-5 in the majors, spades could be the better trump suit.

Then North hopes his partner has enough to bid higher, when South would rebid two spades.

Should declarer discard his inevitable diamond loser at trick three?

Certainly not! That would put his contract on the spade finesse, when he has 10 top tricks: three spades, five hearts and two diamonds.

Well, in theory 10 top tricks. After ruffing at trick three and drawing trumps ending in his hand, South runs the spade nine (the lowest card that can win the trick if the finesse is working). Now an East with steely nerves can dangle a tasty-looking carrot. He ducks smoothly.

Then when South runs the spade queen, East ducks again! If declarer greedily assumes the finesse is winning, he will take a third finesse, but East will produce the king out of his back pocket, and the contract will go down one.

Woman’s hidden HIV status should be brought to light Dear Abby: I’m writing regarding the letter from “She’s Killing Them in Indiana” (July 8) and your response to the writer, whose friend is HIV-positive and doesn’t tell her partners her diagnosis.

I am a disease intervention specialist (DIS) in Indiana and work specifically with STDs like HIV. In Indiana there is a duty to warn law that requires anyone who is HIV-positive to inform any past or present sexual or needle-sharing partners of her/ his HIV status. At the time of diagnosis, all providers inform the patient of this, and a DIS like me is required to get a signed copy of this law from HIV-positive individuals.

This year there was a large

This individual will maintain the fiscal records of the Village, preparing journal entries, maintaining general ledger accounts, and reconciling bank statements. Payroll and pension administration along with their associated record keeping is also part of this position. The preferred candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field and 2-3 years of experience in municipal finance or accounting. PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS Sealed bids will be received by the Coal City Fire Protection District (CCFPD) from qualified contractors for the partial demolition and remodeling including general construction, mechanical, plumbing and electrical work on the project known as "Coal City Fire Protection District - Station No. 2 Tornado Rebuild". The existing building damaged by a tornado on June 22, 2015 is located at 1455 South

Berta Road between Spring Road and Reed Road in Coal City, Illinois.

The construction consists of repairs to site work, cast-in place concrete slab on grade, footings and foundation walls, brick and concrete masonry unit walls, wood roof trusses, pre-engineered metal buildseam metal ing,standing roofing,overhead sectional doors, wood and hollow metal doors with hollow metal frames, aluminum frame windows, interior finishes, plumbing,fire protection, geothermal HVAC and electrical.

A mandatory pre-bid meeting will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at the Coal City Fire Protection District - Station No. 2 apparatus bays located at 1455 South Berta Road Coal City, Illinois 60416. Only those contractors represented at that meeting will be allowed to bid on this project.

Proposals from contractors that do not attend will no be read or accepted.

QUALIFICATION: Each bidder must satisfactorily complete the qualification process described in Section 01000 - General Requirements of the Project Manual, by providing the required Qualification Documents. The Qualification Documents will be reviewed by the Owner and Architect to determine the lowest responsible bidder.

Plans, specifications and proposal forms will be available at the Coal City Fire Protection District, Station #1, 35 South DeWitt Place, Coal City, IL 60416, on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 8 am until 5 pm. A non-refundable deposit of $100.00 will be required.

All bidders will be required to submit a bid bond in the amount of 5% of the amount of the bid. No bid checks will be accepted. The successful bidder will be required to provide a 100% Performance Bond and a Labor and Material Payment Bond with the contract.

Bidders are advised that this contract will be subject to the Illinois Prevailing Wage Act. Bids shall be submitted no later than 4:00 p.m. at the Coal City Fire Protection District - Station No. 1 training room on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. Bids will be opened and read publicly at that time. The owner reserves the right to reject any or all bids and to waive any irregularities or informalities in the bidding. No bid shall be withdrawn for a period of 30 days subsequent

to the opening of bids without the consent of the owner.
