Humbled by support for YMCA What a difference a year makes.

As we look back over the changes that have occurred during the past 12 months, it’s humbling to reflect on the unwavering support we have received since opening our temporary facility in downtown Morris.

Our members and the community have welcomed us with open arms, and we will forever be grateful.

To truly appreciate how far we’ve come in just a year, we need to think back to where we were just 12 months ago. Last October, our facility was the vacant former city hall building in downtown Morris.

In the span of just 60 days, a complete overhaul of the building was made to transform it into a vibrant YMCA facility, which includes a state-of-the-art fitness center and weight room, a group exercise studio, a multipurpose room for youth and community programming, locker rooms and a child watch/ activity center.

COMMUNITY PULSE Missy Durkin We deeply appreciate the city’s support by providing us with the opportunity to lease this space and call it our home for the next few years.

When we opened the doors to our temporary home, we hoped to welcome 250 membership units to the facility.

We had a team of three fulltime and about 30 part-time staff members in place to serve our members.

Today, we have nearly 800 membership units, which represent approximately 2,000 of our neighbors who have come to the Y to embrace a healthy, new lifestyle.

As our membership base has grown, so too has our staff team.

Our Morris Community YMCA staff team now boasts five full-time staff and nearly 50 part-time employees. We

are honored to serve our community and look forward to serving our members each and every day.

Our inaugural year would not have been possible without the support of our partner, Morris Hospital.

When our organizations first began to meet in 2014, it quickly became apparent that by working together we could make our communities healthier.

With the hospital’s dedicated staff by our side, that vision became a reality when we officially opened our new facility on Wauponsee Street.

We thank Morris Hospital for its support, its partnership and its commitment to population health, and look forward to continuing to introduce new and innovative programs to better serve our community.

So what’s next for the Morris Community YMCA? In the coming months, area residents will see even more expanded offerings in youth and senior programming, youth and adult sports,

and health and wellness initiatives as we unveil our program guide for winter and spring.

We also have a few more surprises in store for our members that will add to their YMCA experience with additional amenities and extended services, coming in early 2016.

In the meantime, if you haven’t visited the Morris Community YMCA, please stop by to tour the facility and learn more about what we have to offer.

The best is yet to come for our community, and we’re excited to share this journey with you.

‘Shop it Forward’ added to shoppers’ to-do list this weekend in Morris

MORRIS – Sandwiched between 3 French Hens Country Market on Saturday morning and Morris Cruise Night on Saturday evening was the first day of the shopping incentive event dubbed “Shop it Forward.”

It was created to encourage shoppers in downtown Morris to buy at more than just one retail establishment.

Saturdays are always a good shopping day for downtown, many retailers said, and the market and Cruise Night always bring in more business than normal weekends, but the new campaign most likely brought in even a few more.

Byron Thorson, of Sklut’s Mens Wear, said he thinks some of the customers he saw Saturday were there because of the savings they knew they would see with Shop if Forward.

“It gets people going out knowing they are going to save money,” he said.

Thorson said he had been handing out small yellow cards listing the retailers participating in the promotion, as well as telling people about the savings they would see if they showed their Sklut’s receipt to other downtown stores.

This is the second year the Morris Retail Association has sponsored Shop it Forward.

The idea focuses on any time a shopper spends at least $10 at one of the 20 participating retailers, they can take their receipt to another listed retailer and get 20 percent off their purchase at the second shop.

The program began Saturday and lasts through Oct. 17. Customers who buy one day may return another day during the week to use their receipts for the savings.

“Some people said they’ll come back, realizing they have all week to use their receipts,” said Cathy Fleetwood, owner

Fleetwood said she had several customers come in her shop and use their receipts from other retailers for discounts. She recalls seeing receipts from The Fabric Center, True North, Whimsy, Apple Butter & Shugies and other stores. Many who visited the market early in the day spent time afterward shopping the downtown stores, she said.

“We retailers work together to help each other out,” she said.

Four of those shoppers who came for the market then shopped downtown afterward were all carrying bags of some kind.

“It’s been very big today,” said Jane Kerr, of Apple Butter & Shugies. “[The incentive] has been great for business, and we’ve been telling other

people who leave about it. It’s been a lot of out-of-towners. ...

They go to the French Market, then they spread out throughout the day.”

Kerr said this second year of Shop it Forward was more popular than the first year.

“We think it’s superb,” she said. “It’s huge PR.” Not all the businesses that participated said they were

seeing an immediate increase from the initiative on Saturday, though. Blackbird’s Bowl was having a busy shopping day, but employee JoAnn Brandt said as of midafternoon Saturday, she knew of only one shopper who brought in a receipt to get a discount.

Staff at The Thoughtful Spot said they had only seen a couple of receipts.

UP CLOSE Start Your Engines MORRIS – Thousands of people flooded the LyondellBasell Recreation Area on Sunday for the 29th annual Morris Lions Club Fall Classic Car Show.

According to Morris Lions Club President Judy Miller, more than 1,000 cars registered for the show, 600 swap spots for buying and selling car-related items were sold, and more than 200 cars were for sale in the car corral.

Miller stressed that the car show next year will be at a different date due to scheduling conflicts. The 2016 show will be Oct. 30 and will have a Halloween theme.

Pedestrian killed on I-55 in Grundy County

By SHAW MEDIA The Grundy County Coroner is investigating the death of a pedestrian that happened early Sunday morning on Interstate 55.

The death occurred shortly after midnight Sunday on I-55 near the 221 mile post – about a mile north of the I-55 and Route 47 interchange – according to a news release from Coroner John W. Callahan.

The preliminary investigation found a man was walk-

ing along I-55 and jumping in front of the oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes, according to the news release.

“At least one witness stated he swerved and missed the subject and also called authorities, however within minutes other vehicles were north bound as well and were not able to avoid striking the pedestrian,” the news release stated. “Witnesses stated the pedestrian was struck more than once and the evidence in the early stage of the in-

vestigation supports that statement.”

Callahan pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene at 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

He later on Sunday released the name of the pedestrian as Matthew Scott Miller, 24, of Midlothian.

Callahan was assisted in the notification of next of kin by Midlothian Police.

Callahan said the incident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and the Illinois State Police.

Roumeliotis’s new office is in the Morris Business and Technology Center at 1802 N. Division St., Suite 703, Morris.

Nurse Practitioners Cari Pierard and Diane Zuelke have moved to the new office location with Roumeliotis, as well as many of the clinical

and office staff that patients are used to seeing.

“The affiliation is yet another example of one of the many ways we are able to work collaboratively with physicians on the Morris Hospital Medical Staff through unique partnerships,” said Mark Steadham, president & CEO of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

As an internal medicine physician, Roumeliotis provides primary care services for adult patients.

He is a graduate of the University of Patras in Greece and completed an internship and residency at Mercy Hos-

pital & Medical Center in Chicago.

Roumeliotis joined the medical staff at Morris Hospital in 1991 and currently serves on the Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers’ Board of Directors.

“The affiliation with Morris Hospital will allow me to spend more time on patient care while Morris Hospital focuses on the business management side of the practice,” Roumeliotis said. “Other than the new office location, my patients will notice very few changes.”

MORRIS – When I asked Morris Community High School Superintendent Pat Halloran and Principal Kelly Hussey last week about a few events in the school’s homecoming week schedule, they answered in their normal, administrative fashion.

Then I mentioned Friday’s pep assembly.

“I’m not going to ask you to be quiet much today,” Hussey said. “In fact, I’ll be encouraging you not to be quiet most of the time, but I just have a couple announcements.”

Teachers formed five teams – the Old Farts, The Know It All’s, The Crybabies, The Rebels and The Spirit Squad – and dressed to fit their team names.

The Old Farts, comprised of Athletic Director George Dergo and teachers Chris Hankins, Barb Rath and Cindy Shannon, were dressed in bathrobes, hair rollers and armed with canes. At the end, football coach Alan Thorson encouraged everyone to come out to the football game Friday night.

But before he left, he said there would be no better way to prepare for the homecoming dance Saturday than to watch faculty dance. And with that, the five “Jeopardy” teams assembled and ran through a loosely choreographed routine of Top 40 hits.

“The students really enjoy themselves,” Johnson said afterward. “We like to call this organized chaos.”

SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The Morris Theatre Guild Inc. has begun rehearsals and is taking reservations for its fall production of “The Altos (Like ‘The Sopranos’ only Lower),” an interactive comic mystery by David Landau with music and lyrics by Nikki Stern.

“The Altos (Like ‘The Soprano’s’ only Lower)” is an audience-interactive and improvisational spoof of the popularized HBO series, “The Sopranos.”

It’s Tony Alto’s funeral, and his wife, Toffee, is sending out invitations to the wake. Chris Alto requires visitors to check their weapons at the door – if not, he’s got extras. Uncle Senior has a rigged dice game going somewhere, and Tony’s Ma is just plain crazy. Tony’s shrink, Dr. Malaise, is giving free analysis, and the father isn’t sure what he’s doing there.

The talented cast is directed

The cast includes both veteran and new guild members, including Erica Quirk of Minooka, Bill Griffith and Karianne Duggard, both of Plainfield, Jim Welch, Dave Scoggin and Brian Stroup, all of Morris, Kelli Montgomery of Ottawa and Kevin Fogarty of Gardner.

nos’ only Lower)” opens Nov. 13 and continues Nov. 14, 15, 20 and 21, and closes Nov. 22.

Friday and Saturday night performances begin at 7:30 p.m., and both Sunday matinee performances begin at 2:30 p.m.

Ticket prices for adults are $12 each if reserved by email, phone or purchased online, and $15 each if purchased at the door.

For those age 13 and younger, or students able to show their ID, the ticket price for email, phone or online reservations is $10 each. Otherwise, the adult price applies. Groups of 10 or more people making a reservation by phone will receive a 10 percent discount off the total ticket price.

There are no refunds.

INDICTMENTS MORRIS – Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland announced that on Oct. 7 the grand jury has returned the following indictments.

The public is advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty, according to a news release from Helland’s office.

Brandon Brown, 22, of Channahon, was indicted for the unlawful possession of heroin, a Class 4 felony.

Ikechuku Chinwah, 49, of Orland Park, was indicted for unlawful cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony; unlawful possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis with the intent to deliver, a Class X felony; and the unlawful possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, a Class 1 felony.

Dasean Clark, 20, of Crest Hill, was indicted for obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony.

Richard Kendall-Dodge, 24, of Joliet, was indicted for failure to register as a sex offender, a Class 3 felony.

Steffen Durkee, 26, of Morris, was indicted for the unlawful possession of alprazolam, a Class 4 felony.

Charles H. Black Jr., 62, of Seneca, died peacefully on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, with his family and friends by his side.

Funeral services will be at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oakwood Memorial Park on a later date.

Charles was born on Jan. 13, 1953, in Union City, TN to Charles H. and Dixie (Drake) Black. He married Martha Holm on July 1, 1992, in Jamaica. Chuck loved his time on the water. He and his wife spent their winters at their home in the Keys. Chuck owned and operated Anchor in Marina in Seneca for over 45 years.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; 4 children, Jessica (Colin) Downes, of Westchester, Charles (Rachel) Black, of Seneca, Beau (Chelsea Young) Beguin, of Ottawa, and Sara (Brandon) Countryman, of Mazon; and 4 grandchildren, Olivia and Harper Beguin and Braydon and Bradley Countryman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Diane Black.

Scholarship winner discusses 2015 World Affairs Seminar SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Evan Gagnon, son of Michael and Oratina Gagnon, was one of two recipients of scholarships to the 2015 World Affairs Seminar held at Carroll University, Waukesha, Wisconsin. This year’s theme was “Global Energy – Who’s got the power?”

At a recent Lions Club meeting, Evan recounted his experience at this summer’s seminar.

He explained that he enjoyed presentations from speakers about power conservation, planning and resource management. He said they were engaging presentations and challenged his thinking.

Working in small groups of 10 to 15, students from different cultures worked on projects to explain how insufficient energy affects their lives.

Evan’s group created a game with challenging questions.

A student from Burundi, Africa, had grown up with no electricity. “How can I Evan Gagnon help my country?” he asked.

Learning more about world energy problems was interesting to Evan, but hearing firsthand from the people it affected made an impact on him. Many ideas were exchanged, includ-

MORRIS – Special Connections of Grundy County hosted its fifth annual golf outing Aug. 29 at Nettle Creek Country Club in Morris. More than 100 golfers were welcomed by Kurt Nolan of Nettle Creek Country Club and Jennifer Price of Special Connections, who gave special recognition to the Morris Police Department for its ongoing support of Special Connections.

Through the Run the Beat 5K and Faculty vs. Fuzz game, the police department has donated more than $10,000 to Special Connections, and more to Special Olympics Illinois.

To start the day, the golfers headed out for an 18-hole round of golf, scramble format, that included contest holes and a putting contest. Golfers had the opportunity to witness the skills of Special Connections Special Olympics golfer Aaron Eucker as he teed off for each foursome on hole 13. Golfers enjoyed lunch while listening to the announcements of contest and raffle winners. A group of children in the community donated their proceeds from a lemonade stand they set up near the golf course.

Strong Morris opening can’t overcome Kaneland

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MORRIS – In Friday’s 23-7 loss against Kaneland, things started out well for the Morris football team. Kaneland received the opening kickoff, and the Redskins’ Jake Webb made a diving interception at the Morris 10-yard line.

The Redskins quickly erased the bad field position when Michael Feeney broke free for a 44-yard run to the Kaneland 46 on the first play.

Morris continued to drive, getting a first down when Tommy Balentine caught a short pass from Nathan Guth on 3rd-and-14, made a couple of Kaneland defenders miss and picked up 15 yards. On the next play, the two teamed up again in a decidedly unconventional manner.

Guth ran up the middle, was hit and the ball squirted free, bouncing toward the right side of the field. Balentine came in from his slot position and picked it up, running the remaining 30 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Morris lead after Collin Tucker’s extra point.

It seemed to be a good omen, as the Redskins had scored nearly exactly the same way in an earlier win over Sterling, except that time Feeney picked up the loose ball instead of Balentine.

Against Sterling, however, the Morris offense kept the momentum going. Against Kaneland, Morris’ first touchdown also was its the last.

The starting field position on the first drive was a sign of things to come. Of the 12 times Morris had the ball, eight started at its own 20 or worse. The Redskins’ average starting field position was their own 22.

That, in turn, led to good field position for Kaneland, as did three interceptions, a fumble returned for a touchdown and a sack in the end zone that resulted in a safety.

“We had a good opening drive,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “We drive 90 yards and get a touchdown.

That’s great. Even the drive after that, we missed a field goal, but I can live with that. It was still a good drive and we were in a position to score.

Coal City’s average margin of victory is 25.5 points; it’s average margin of defeat is 25.0.

The Coalers are better than the losing teams on their schedule and out-classed by the powerhouses.

To Coalers such as running back Joe Starkey, it’s not that simple.

He believes that the Coalers have failed to capitalize on opportunities that could have won the games they lost.

“I think we’ve gotta finish ballgames,” Starkey said after the Coalers were outscored 20-0 in the second half of a 34-6 loss to unbeaten Manteno Friday. “We gotta step it up. A lot of times, we just come out flat, and we just gotta fix that. We gotta come out with a head full of steam and make something happen.”

The Coalers were not competitive with the Panthers late in Friday’s game, but the stages of the game might have played out differently if the Coalers had capitalized on early chances.

Bears’ rebuilding a bit ahead of schedule It was Stephen Stills who wrote and Buffalo Springfield that sang, “There’s something happening here, what it is aint exactly clear.”

It was December of 1966 and while Stills clearly had a very different subject matter in mind, the lyrics that became an anthem from Buffalo Springfield for the peace movement of the ‘60s absolutely apply to the 2015 Bears through five weeks of the 2015 season.

In a game the Bears shouldn’t have won and seemingly couldn’t win, they took a huge step forward as a team and as an organization with their improbable 18-17 win Sunday over Kansas City.

The Chiefs had a lot more talent on the field than the Bears did, and who knows what happens if Jamaal Charles doesn’t go down or if Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith hadn’t done his best Jonathan Quinn imitation for the better part of the game?

But the bottom line is the

Bears had the biggest hearts on the field, were the better-coached team and worked with what they had, executing much better than the Chiefs almost to the end.

With the Bears playing without Alshon Jeffery, Eddie Royal, Jermon Bushrod, Will Montgomery and Antrel Rolle, the Charles injury is irrelevant.

The Chiefs should have hammered the Bears, with or without him.

Sure, Smith stunk, but I’ve broadcast enough of Smith’s games, including the Chiefs 45-44 loss to the Colts in a 2013 AFC wild-card game, to know Smith is capable of playing like an All-Pro. Vic Fangio and his guys had a ton to do with Smith’s woeful performance.

After looking like they were going to be blown out with the second half coming to an end, the Bears stopped Jeremy Maclin three yards short of a first down at their 16 and

Next, the Chiefs took the second-half kickoff 71 yards on 13 plays only to have McPhee block a 27-yard Cairo Santos field-goal attempt, and the Bears defense took over from there.

Fangio started dialing up pressures that included Houston and Young, and each garnered their first QB sacks of the season.

Porter had another excellent game in coverage, primarily on Jeremy Maclin, who was held to 85 yards on eight catches after back-toback monster games with double-digit catches and more than 140 yards in each.

avoided the spotlight and made enough plays to get another win.

Fangio is clearly an excellent coach who is making this defense far bigger and better than the sum of its parts.

At the end of the day, however, the main plotline in the Bears’ heroic victory over the Chiefs is once again the play of Jay Cutler.

Sure, Matt Forte’s huge, but he’s an All-Pro giving the team what it expects.

Martellus Bennett struggled in Kansas City, and while Marquess Wilson, Josh Bellamy and Cameron Meredith all made big plays, none have done enough to convince us they have futures with the team.

Hroniss Grasu went from awful to impressive in 60 minutes, and Kyle Long was outstanding.

But for the better part of Sunday, Cutler was an elite quarterback. Who can honestly say they saw that coming?

Is it thanks to Adam Gase?

John Fox? It “aint exactly clear” yet but they’re obviously not hurting.

And here’s one more thought. Eddie Goldman, Grasu, Jeremy Langford, Amos, Patrick Omameh, McPhee, Acho, Jones-Quartey, Porter and other contributors all have one thing in common – none of them were here last year.

It seems Ryan Pace has something to do with this as well.

Hear me folks, it’s early.

This is still a .500 team on its best day. Not every Sunday will go the way this one did.

But what’s happening here is that Pace and Fox know they’ve got a rebuild on their hands, and their plan might just be a little bit ahead of schedule right now.

Chicago is making a recovery, and hopefully Cutler is too

To perfectly encapsulate the Bears’ win Sunday, the quarterback had to bobble the ball and pick it up off the ground with 23 seconds left, down by five points.

And then he had to look left – he knew exactly who he was going to throw to – and complete a seven-yard, game-winning pass to Matt Forte. One week after winning on a field goal with two seconds remaining, the Bears led for 18 seconds Sunday – including the only second that mattered – in an 1817 win at Arrowhead Stadium.

victory for the first time in years. Along the way, they found the identity they’ve been searching for – one that, tackle Kyle Long said, is “100 percent a reflection of John Fox and the coordinators.”

They don’t quit.

“Whereas, in years, past I feel like guys are looking at the clock like, ‘Hey, maybe they run it out; Maybe we can get

out of here with some time to spare tonight,’” Long said.

Not this season. That’s the Fox influence, even when, Sunday, they took the field without starting Alshon Jeffery and Eddie Royal, defensive captain Antrel Rolle, starting center Will Montgomery and left tackle Jermon Bushrod. All were injured.

Lawmakers need to face reality The Illinois Senate had been scheduled to return to Springfield on Tuesday after not being in session since Sept.

9. But last week, the Senate president postponed the session until Oct. 20. The reason is pretty straightforward.

The Senate has overridden several gubernatorial vetoes.

It’s pretty easy for the majority party because the chamber has 39 Democrats, three more than the three-fifths required to override a veto.

The House has 71 Democrats, the exact number of votes required to overturn a veto in that chamber. So, while the Senate Democrats can be missing a few people or have some folks who don’t want to go along, they still can override the governor on partisan votes. But the House Democrats need every member in town, and they all need to be voting the same way for that chamber to succeed.

Because of that tight margin, and because the Republicans have marched in lock step with their party’s governor, the House has overridden only one veto this entire year: the Heroin Crisis Act. And the House was able to override that bill only because Gov. Bruce Rauner allowed House Republicans to vote against his amendatory veto, which stripped out state Medicaid funding for heroin addiction treatment. To date, the governor and his staff have successfully fought off 62 override attempts, mainly in the House.

So much for Speaker Michael Madigan’s much-vaunted veto-proof House majority.

We have a whole lot of nothing going on these days.

For instance, a minor fuss was made recently at the Statehouse when a city of Chicago honcho showed up to testify

VIEWS Rich Miller about Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s property tax proposal without having actual written legislation to talk about. But, in reality, that thing ain’t going anywhere.

So far, the governor is opposed to the plan, which would exempt homeowners with houses appraised at $250,000 or less from Emanuel’s massive property tax hike.

The main burden would fall on commercial property owners, and Rauner has said their opposition is valid and everyone’s property taxes should be capped at current levels – despite Chicago’s horrific fiscal problems.

As long as Rauner remains opposed, it’s highly unlikely the House could pass such a bill. The House Democrats have not yet convinced the Republicans to break with their party’s governor on anything, and they’re surely not going to do so over a vote for Chicago, and it’s doubtful that all downstate and suburban Democrats will go along without some relief for their own taxpayers.

The city is simply going to have to find another way to solve its problem unless and until the governor and the legislative leaders work things out. Which may be never at the rate they’re going.

The Democrats can’t go around Rauner, they can’t go through him, they can’t go over him. But Rauner can’t get anything done without them.

They all need to start facing reality here.

Mark Twain said, “Tell the truth or trump – but get the trick.”

A bridge player will happily trump if it gains a trick, but there are times when winning that one trick costs two in the future. This week, we will look at declarer’s efforts to gain extra trump tricks and to avoid losing tricks unnecessarily.

In this deal, for example, South is in four hearts. West leads his fourth-highest spade. East wins with the ace and returns the spade four. Should South discard a club loser or ruff?

In the auction, North showed a balanced 18-19 points with his two-notrump rebid.

Then South bid what he hoped he could make. Note that if South had chosen to rebid three no-trump, the defenders would have had a chance at a plus score. East would have had to lead a spade. Then West would have had to take the trick and shift to the club queen or nine – a very tough assignment.

In four hearts, South starts with nine top tricks: six hearts and three diamonds.

And if he pitches a club on the second spade, he will establish a spade trick in the dummy. But there is a potential bee in the balm. West will take the trick and can shift to a club. If East holds the club ace, the contract will fail.

Instead, South should trump at trick two, draw trumps, and try to run the diamonds.

When they split 3-3, the contract is assured.

But if the diamonds are 4-2 or worse, declarer trumps the last spade or diamond in his hand and leads a club in the hope that West has the ace.

Catch rheumatoid arthritits early to slow progression Dear Dr. K: My doctor suspects I have rheumatoid arthritis. He wants me to see a rheumatologist. How should I prepare for this appointment?

Dear Reader: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-lasting inflammatory disease that causes painful, stiff, swollen joints. If you do have RA, it’s best to diagnose the condition early. Disease-modifying treatment, started as soon as possible, can slow or prevent the disease from wreaking havoc on your joints. (I’ve put an illustration showing the effects of RA on my website, www.askdoctork.com.)

Either your primary care doctor or a rheumatologist (a doctor who specializes in arthritis) will evaluate you. He or she will be looking for the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff symptoms and signs of RA, as well as other types of arthritis, such as that caused by lupus and gout, which can have similar symptoms.

The doctor will conduct a physical examination. He or she will look for swelling, tenderness, warmth, limited motion and certain deformities in your joints. You likely will have blood tests and you may have imaging tests – X-rays and possibly MRI scans or ultrasound studies. There is nothing you need to do to prepare for these tests.

But there is one important area in which you do need to

prepare. The doctor will ask you lots of detailed questions about the one thing you know, and the doctor cannot know without asking you: your symptoms. What your symptoms are, when they first began and how they’ve changed over time will provide clues that are crucial to determining your diagnosis.

So give some thought to the questions below, and be prepared to discuss them at your appointment: • How would you describe your symptoms? Are your joints swollen? Stiff? Painful?

Achy?

• To what extent do your symptoms interfere with daily activities?

• What time of day are your symptoms worst?

• How does activity affect

your pain?

• Have your symptoms worsened over time?

• Did your symptoms start gradually or come on suddenly?

• Did you experience an infection, illness or injury around the time your symptoms started?

• Have you experienced seemingly unrelated symptoms such as fever, weight loss, diarrhea, chest pain or abdominal pain?

• Does anyone in your family have arthritis or a related condition?

It can be difficult to remember these details on a good day. It can be even more challenging when you’re in a doctor’s office and have many questions and concerns on your mind.

A symptom diary can help.

Starting two weeks before your appointment, write down your symptoms. Record their intensity, how long they last, what they feel like and what makes them better or worse.

Bring these notes to your appointment.

Over the past 20 years, powerful new treatments have become available to treat RA. These treatments can slow or stop the destruction of joints that occurs in some people with the disease. Catching the disease early, and getting the right treatment before there is joint damage, can make a world of difference.

modeling including general construction, mechanical, plumbing and electrical work on the project known as "Coal City Fire Protection District - Station No. 2 Tornado Rebuild". The existing building damaged by a tornado on June 22, 2015 is located at 1455 South Berta Road between Spring Road and Reed Road in Coal City, Illinois.

The construction consists of repairs to site work, cast-in place concrete slab on grade, footings and foundation walls, brick and concrete masonry unit walls, wood roof trusses, pre-engineered metal buildseam metal ing,standing roofing,overhead sectional doors, wood and hollow metal doors with hollow metal frames, aluminum frame windows, interior finishes, plumbing,fire protection, geothermal HVAC and electrical.

A mandatory pre-bid meeting will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at the Coal City Fire Protection District - Station No. 2 apparatus bays located at 1455 South Berta Road Coal City, Illinois 60416. Only those contractors represented at that meeting will be allowed to bid on this project.

Proposals from contractors that do not attend will no be read or accepted.

QUALIFICATION: Each bidder must satisfactorily complete the qualification process described in Section 01000 - General Requirements of the Project Manual, by providing the required Qualification Documents. The Qualification Documents will be reviewed by the Owner and Architect to determine the lowest responsible bidder.

Plans, specifications and proposal forms will be available at the Coal City Fire Protection District, Station #1, 35 South DeWitt Place, Coal City, IL 60416, on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 8 am until 5 pm. A non-refundable deposit of $100.00 will be required.

All bidders will be required to submit a bid bond in the amount of 5% of the amount of the bid. No bid checks will be accepted. The successful bidder will be required to provide a 100% Performance Bond and a Labor and Material Payment Bond with the contract.

Bidders are advised that this contract will be subject to the Illinois Prevailing Wage Act. Bids shall be submitted no later than 4:00 p.m. at the Coal City Fire Protection District - Station No. 1 training room on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. Bids will be opened and read publicly at that time. The owner reserves the right to reject any or all bids and to waive any irregularities or informalities in the bidding.
