OBITUARIES KENNETH C. FALKENBERG Kenneth C. Falkenberg, “K.C.”, age 60, at rest Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Joliet, the son of the late John “Jack” Falkenberg, he was a long time Joliet resident.

Retired from Caterpillar, Inc. as an inspector, in 2005. Member of I.A.M. Union Local #851, and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #300.

Ken’s passions were baseball, bowling and golf.

Surviving are his loving daughter, Tricia (Michael) Pellegrini of Joliet; his brother, John Falkenberg of Morris; son-in-law of Mary Sukley of Crest Hill; brother-in-law of Robert (Pat) McGee of New Lenox, Joseph (Carol Kohl) Sukley, Jr., Teena (Ken) Knezetic, Jerome Sukley, James Testa, Tammy (Teddy) Mazor all of Channahon; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Sharon Purcell and her children, Terri and Tommy.

Preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (nee Sukley) Falkenberg; father-in-law, Joseph Sukley, Sr.; nephew, Robert McGee, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Jana Testa (2014).

Mildred L. Wallace nee Birchard, age 91, of South Wilmington, IL passed away Friday, October 10, 2014, at Heritage Health Nursing Home in Dwight, IL. Born July 8, 1923, to the late Albert “Harry” and Chesna “Beulah” (nee Underwood) Birchard.

Graduate of the Gardner-South Wilmington High School, Class of 1941. Retired from Fox Center in Dwight, after numerous years of employment. She attended the United Methodist Church in South Wilmington.

Mildred enjoyed crocheting, quilting, gardening, the outdoors, and most importantly spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda (John) Mudd of South Wilmington; four grandchildren, Michele (Blase) Romence, Melissa (Michael) McFadden, Melanie (Scott) Wise, and Meredith (Kahlon) Barnes; six great-grandchildren, Oliver and Laura Romence, Jack and Jim McFadden, Nate and Noah Wise; sister, Virginia Meditz of Gardner, IL; special friends, Cathy Smith, Karen Rury, and Sharon Sistek; and numerous nieces and nephews.

HELEN D. ZOUGANELIS Born: March 10, 1931; in Joliet, IL Died: Oct. 9, 2014; in Joliet, IL

Helen D. Zouganelis, age 83, of Wilmington, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2014, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born March 10, 1931, in Joliet, Helen was a daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Bubnas) Sinchak. She was raised and educated in Joliet and on May 8, 1954, Helen married George Peter Zouganelis in SS. Cyril and Methodius Church in Joliet.

Together they lived in Joliet before moving to Wilmington in the 1970’s. Helen was co-owner and operator of Community GMC in Wilmington with her late husband George, Sr. until her retirement in 2008. Today the automobile dealership continues to be owned and operated by the Zouganelis family.

Helen was a member of Saint Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington and enjoyed being a part of the “Alma Acres Misfits”, which included Reba Lund, Debbie Glass and Diane and Joan Ptacek. She took pleasure in gardening, cooking, baking and sewing. Helen loved to dance and constantly remained active with her family that she so dearly cherished.

Survivors include her sons, George, Jr. (Renee) Zouganelis and Peter Zouganelis, both of Wilming-

ton; two grandchildren, Cassandra Zouganelis and Alexis Nicole Zouganelis; two step-grandchildren, Jeremy Hicks and Tyce Carlson; one great granddaughter, Makayla; two brothers, Raymond Sinchak of Joliet and Michael Sinchak of Morris; one sister, Irene Schomer of Lisle; four sisters-in-law, Jennie McKanna and Kay Zouganelis, both of Joliet, Helen Skaropoulos of California and Eugenia Zouganelis of Friendship, Wisconsin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George, Sr.; adopted daughter, Gail Douglass-Zouganelis; four brothers, Andrew, John, Joe and George; and five sisters, Lou, Marge, Liz, Anna and Mary.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014, between the hours of 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road in Wilmington. Funeral services will follow Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. in Saint Rose Church, 603 North Kankakee Street in Wilmington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Reverend Steve Bondi officiating.

Burial will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, where Helen will be laid to rest with her husband George.

Longtime coin collector turned to new hobby

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – It’s hard to ignore the hoards of colorful squashes, pumpkins and gourds filling the Morris Coin Shop when walking down Liberty Street.

Downtown shoppers will curiously peek through the storefront window, pausing to take a glance at the pumpkins, some weighing more than 100 pounds.

Every so often, a passer-by will wander inside and ask owner Phil Anderson the question others are likely thinking – what’s with all the pumpkins?

“I guess there’s a fair amount of people that think I’m just an overdecorator,” Anderson said jokingly. “They’re always surprised when I tell them they are for sale.”

Anderson is somewhat of a pumpkin aficionado. On his small farm in Newark, he and his wife, Valerie, grow 74 different varieties of pumpkin, squash and gourd, taking care to cultivate the most unique seed they can find.

What began 10 years ago as a hobby, has developed into a pas-

sion for the local coin dealer.

While he sells the standard, orange jack-o-lantern pumpkins, Anderson said he is more of a connoisseur of the fall fruits.

His pumpkins can be pink, blue, yellow, white or multi-colored. Some are covered in wartlike bumps, like the “Knucklehead” and “Goosebumps” varieties. His “Cinderella” pumpkins look identical to the ones that made the princess’s carriage, and his “Bushel Basket” gourdes can grow to two feet in diameter.

“People always associate pumpkins with Halloween and it kind of drives me nuts,” he said. “It’s really more of a Thanksgiving thing, tied to the harvest season.”

Not surprisingly, fall is Anderson’s favorite time of year.

He said his love of harvest time is what gave him the idea to start growing pumpkins – the iconic fall crop – on his small five-acre farm.

For much of his life, he collected coins, but once he became a coin dealer, collecting coins felt like more of a job than a hobby, he said.

“It ruined a perfectly good hobby,” Anderson said. “When you have to work at it 40 hours per week, then in your spare time, you start to grow pumpkins.”

Minooka school prepares for the worst Police, firefighters and teachers participate in active shooter drill

bstanley@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Mayor Pat Brennan was visiting family in Colorado a few years ago when he took his grandsons to a local park.

“Beautiful place, huge park ... you had to drive into it, baseball fields, lots of kids playing and a school at the end of it,” he recalled Friday.

“I asked my son the name of the place [and when] he said ‘Columbine’ all the memories flashed back ... images of kids crawling out those windows,” Brennan said.

Brennan, speaking Friday to faculty gathered with police and firefighters at Minooka Intermediate School for an active shooter drill, recalled that day in Colorado.

“And I thought this could never happen in an elementary school,” Brennan said.

The December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut “showed that [isn’t true]. This is a very serious thing.”

Before the Columbine massacre in 1999, police officers who responded to such situations were trained to surround the building until a SWAT team arrived. Now the first officers on the scene are expected to confront an attacker as soon as possible to reduce casualties.

“We do hard lockdowns and soft lockdowns at all the schools regularly, but this is our first staged drill, which we will be doing regularly now under state law,” Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer said. “By testing our response to an incident, it helps us determine what we need to improve on.”

In a real attack, police and paramedics from neighboring communities also would respond.

Minooka police officer emergency service coordinator, said just having the drill helped in that it required them to know the locations of schools in Minooka.

Evaluators from other departments in Will, Grundy and Kendall counties watched as certain hallways were blocked off with yellow tape. “[They’ll] all follow the first team in for a few minutes and then move to separate areas to watch for different things,” Minooka Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Brad Sprague said.

In another room, makeup artists painted bullet wounds and injuries on volunteers who would portray victims when the drill started.

jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Those who purchased dip cones, sundaes and other treats from the Morris Dairy Queen between Aug. 5 and Aug. 31 may want to check their bank statements.

Dairy Queen announced Friday that 395 of its nationwide locations – including Morris – were subject to a cyberattack in which many customers’ credit and debit card information were compromised.

The attack spanned 46 states, hitting 19 locations in

Illinois alone.

After an extensive, monthlong investigation, the situation has been “contained,” meaning the threat to customers is eliminated and they can safely purchase food from the restaurant once again, according to Dairy Queen Vice President of Communications Dean Peters.

Peters said they don’t know exactly how many accounts were compromised, but the company estimates no more than 600,000 unique cards were affected.

Individual stores were not attacked at the same time.

At this point, it is not clear who is behind the security breach, he added.

“Throughout this investigation, we kept calling them ‘the bad guys.’ We don’t know who was behind it. We have no idea at all,” Peters said Friday.

The attack originated after one of the fast food chain’s third-party vendor’s confidential account information was compromised, Peters said.

He encouraged customers to review their bank statements to look for any suspicious activity.

Those who suspect their account information was hacked can contact Dairy Queen’s corporate offices.

The Minnesota-based company is offering free identity repair services for up to one year for all affected customers.

The malware used in Dairy Queen’s data breach is identical to the malware used in other recent retailer cyberattacks, including on Home Depot and Target, Peters said.

MORRIS — We Care of Grundy County is now accepting applications for its Adopt-a-Family Christmas assistance program.

The applications must be filled out and returned no later than Nov. 14 in order to receive help from We Care this year.

“It may seem early but we’ve found a lot of our sponsors want to shop for their families on Black Friday in order to be able to provide them with more gifts,” said Denise Gaska, executive director of We Care.

We Care is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

Adopt-a-Family is an income-based Christmas assistance program that provides help for Christmas dinner and gifts for the clients’ custodial children who are 18 years old and still in high school or younger.

Gaska said it is important for those who need help to get the application filled out and returned by the Nov. 14 deadline because they will not offer help to anyone who does not have it in by that time.

“We had to set a deadline and we have to stick to it or people will call asking for help when there are no more sponsors to help them,” Gaska said.

Those in need of assistance can pick up an application at the We Care office, 520 W. Illinois Ave. in Morris or at Standard Bank in Morris, or at www.wecareofgrundy.com under the download tab.

The application requires proof of income for the past 30 days for all adults older than 18 years old who live in the household; proof of residency, such as a utility bill or current lease; and photo identification, such as a driver’s license or state ID. “We Care staff will review your application and documentation. You will be en-

rolled in the Adopt-a-Family program if your income falls within our income guidelines,” according to We Care’s letter attached to the online application.

Various services available for area veterans Flu shots, counseling among potential benefits offered MORRIS DAILY HERALD MORRIS – The VA Mobile Medical Unit has flu shots available to all enrolled and eligible veterans. The shots will be available during the October visits of the MMU to Grundy County.

The Veterans Mobile Medical Unit from Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital is continuing its monthly visits to Grundy County. It will next be in Morris from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at the John Martin Steele VFW at McKinley and Route 47.

The VA’s Vet Center continues to provide counseling and transition services to eligible veterans on the first Thursday of each month. The Grundy County VAC office hosts the Vet Center each month. They are available from 9 a.m. to noon each visit.

Veterans interested in services can contact the Vet Center at 708-444-0561 to learn more or make an appointment; walk-ins also are welcome.

If veterans are interested

in individual or group counseling sessions or starting a group they should contact the Vet Center so the process can be started.

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Veteran Service Officer comes to Grundy County twice a month and has moved the office to the Grundy VAC office. The state VSO will be in town the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The 38-foot MMU features two separate exam areas, a counseling room, on-the-spot enrollment and much more.

It travels throughout the Chicago area to bring health care services and information to area veterans.

MORRIS – Goodwill stores are expanding in Grundy and Will counties, and company leaders say it’s the result of donor efforts.

In Morris, a Goodwill store will open in the next several weeks in an area north of a Wal-Mart, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

A Goodwill store was set to open in Frankfort on Friday on LaGrange Road in a spot that once housed a Dominick’s grocery store.

The opening of the new stores represents recent growth for Goodwill, which provides employment and supportive services for people with disabilities, accord-

The Morris location will be another positive source of retail for the city, Kopczick said.

The location will be run under the Northern Illinois branch of Goodwill stores.

In March, city officials approved plans for the new store, which will be 16,000 square feet.

Kopczick said many residents look forward to its opening.

“I know in speaking with the developer that he has been looking at Morris for a long time and finally things fell into place,” Kopczick said.

Opening stores in new areas allows Goodwill to have a more dynamic inventory of items for sale, Lightholder said.

JOLIET – The Three Rivers Manufacturers’ Association and Joliet Junior College partnered to host about 500 local high school students as part of its Manufacturing Day event.

Students from 14 schools throughout Grundy and Will counties met with 29 different organizations Oct. 7 to learn more about careers in the manufacturing industry.

“This event is about businesses and schools working together to focus on today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce,” said Jeff White, TRMA board chairman and chief operating officer for Aux Sable Liquid Products, in a news release about the event. “We want these students to see manufacturing as a viable career option.”

Students participating in the event attended a career fair with local companies, got an up- close look at technology

that drives today’s manufacturing industry and also attended a seminar highlighted by keynote speaker and former Bears player Ray McElroy.

According to the National Association of Manufacturers, 80 percent of manufacturers cannot find the skilled workers they need and this gap continues to widen. The Manufacturing Day event is part of a nationwide grassroots movement by NAM to raise awareness about careers in the manufacturing industry to local students. In 2014, local Manufacturing Day events will be at more than 800 sites in 48 states and attended by more than 35,000 people.

Liberty 5K donates to Patriots 4 Heroes MORRIS DAILY HERALD

MORRIS – On July 3, 578 runners and walkers participated in the fifth-annual Liberty 5K Run/Walk. That was more than 200 more participants than 2013.

More than $2,000 in proceeds from the event were donated to benefactors and volunteers from local nonprofit organizations, according to a news release from event organizers.

The run is organized by the Grundy County Farm Bureau and the Morris Downtown Development Partnership.

A $500 check was recently

presented to Patriots 4 Heroes, which supports local service members, veterans and their families as they remain in service or transition back into local communities.

The organization is currently preparing holiday “Boxes of Home” for soldiers. A Boxof-Home can bring a smile to their face, serving as a gentle reminder that America cares.

Each Box-of-Home is filled with items such as personal care items, write home packs, snacks and puzzle books. Set on top of each box is a Christmas stocking full of holiday treats

and a present, along with letters and cards made by area children sending holiday cheer and well wishes.

Historic Association to host cemetery walk MORRIS DAILY HERALD NEWARK – Fern Dell Historic Association will host its Cemetery Walk from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, at the Millington Newark Cemetery.

The Cemetery is located north of Newark on Fox River Drive just at the edge of Millington. Watch for signs to enter and park. The cost is $5 a person.

Various local residents and settlers will be highlighted with readings concerning

their lives at their final resting place.

Each grave will be marked with a lantern and a guide will take small groups on the tour.

MINOOKA – The Minooka Community High School and Channahon Junior High School athletic boosters teamed up once again in August for their 11th Annual Booster Golf Outing at Heritage Bluffs Public Golf Club in Channahon.

Three hours before golfers arrived, volunteers from both athletic booster groups, as well as student-athletes from football, track, athletic training, Arrowettes, cheerleading and girls volleyball arrived to set up.

Close to 100 golfers had arrived and were ready to enjoy a day of golf and fun. By the end of the event and as a result of the support of the golfers and 102 sponsors, more than $29,000 was raised, according to a news release.

“The word ‘successful’ has become synonymous with this event, largely due to the wide variety of support it is so generously given by the community,” said athletic booster President Pam Rabe in the release. “From golfers to sponsors to volunteers, countless people step up to make this event a success year after year and collectively make a difference for the student-athletes at our schools.”

We endorse Bruce Rauner for governor Gov. Pat Quinn has had more than five years to guide Illinois toward a brighter fiscal future.

Instead, his incompetent leadership and regressive policies have driven the state to the brink of financial collapse.

To that point: Illinois is bleeding jobs.

State data released last month show that there are 102,000 fewer Illinoisans in the workforce now than when Quinn, a Democrat, took office in 2009.

That’s good for worst in the country. Illinois also is the only state in the Midwest in which food stamp enrollment has outpaced job creation – and by a 2-to-1 margin – since the Great Recession, again under Quinn’s watch.

Illinois has the worst credit rating of any state in the nation, meaning it pays more in interest when borrowing money.

Under Quinn, national ratings agencies have downgraded the state’s credit rating 13 times. The state’s bonds are near “junk” status.

Illinois also has a worstin-the-nation public pension deficit of $100 billion and growing. Almost a quarter of every dollar that state government collects annually from taxpayers goes toward retirement benefits, not services.

Quinn stood on the sidelines as lawmakers worked on pension reform last year, offering no solution of his own to the state’s most pressing issue. The solution ultimately arrived at now appears likely to be thrown out in court, putting reform efforts back to square one.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Deadbeat state government owes social service agencies, school districts and other employers almost $5 billion for work completed months ago.

Illinois’ worker’s compensation costs are fourth worst in the U.S., driving businesses and jobs elsewhere.

Quinn and Democratic state lawmakers also foisted a 67 percent income tax increase on wage earners in 2011, costing a household with annual income of $50,000 an additional $1,000 in taxes.

Quinn promised it would be temporary, but now wants to make it permanent. He also wants to introduce a graduated income tax, another jobs killer.

Simply put, Quinn’s tenure as governor has been a complete failure.

By contrast, Republican nominee for governor Bruce Rauner is a success story.

A self-made millionaire, he helped build a startup investment firm into one of the most successful businesses in the state.

Rauner’s wealth was not given to him. He earned it.

Yet Quinn, a lifelong politician, holds that against him.

Success should be lauded, not vilified.

Because he is independently wealthy, Rauner will not be beholden to the special interests that have helped corrupt Springfield.

He says he will stand up to public employee union leaders who have fought toothand-nail against reform.

He says he also will fight corruption and cronyism, which have thrived under Quinn in state government

agencies such as the Department of Transportation and the Department of Agriculture.

Rauner understands that the state’s taxpayers are overburdened.

He wants to phase out the Quinn income tax hike over four years, freeze property taxes and shrink state government.

He also wants to reduce the overall number of governmental bodies in Illinois.

Rauner pledges to be an active governor and live in Springfield. Unlike Quinn, Rauner says that he will be on the floor working legislation every day the General Assembly is in session.

Rauner also is not a career politician; this is his first run for office. He supports term limits and, if elected, said he would serve, at most, two terms.

Rauner admits that he does not have all the answers. He understands that Illinois’ financial situation is so dire, he will need help. He vows to surround himself with talented people whose focus will be righting the state’s fiscal ship, not political cronies looking for more taxpayer-funded handouts.

Rauner doesn’t need this job. He said he’s running because he believes in Illinois and wants to make it a better place to live.

Illinois can’t afford more of the same. That’s why we endorse Rauner, the Republican nominee for governor.

kdruley@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Good things come in threes, the adage goes, and boy, was that the case for the Morris football team during Friday’s first half against Kaneland.

The Redskins’ defense forced fumbles on three consecutive Knights’ possessions and scored a pair of touchdowns en route to a 26-21 victory over Kaneland.

Morris and Kaneland entered the Northern Illinois Big 12 East contest in all but identical situations: two teams with proud playoff streaks facing the first of three potential must-win games before the postseason even started. Morris (3-4, 1-2 NI Big 12 East) started off strong, as Ryan Niewinski sacked Kaneland (2-5, 0-4) quarterback Jake Marczuk on the first play from scrimmage.

Marczuk and the Knights’ spread passing attack responded after that, though, traveling 86 yards on seven plays – the last a 37-yard scoring pass from Marczuk to Connor Fedderly.

First plays were a misnomer on the Redskins’ opening possession, as the offense stalled after quarterback Griffin Sobol’s 19-yard keeper. The first quarter ended with Kaneland ahead, 7-0. Morris sprung to life soon after.

ered fumbles in the first minute of the second quarter, then again about midway through.

The Redskins scored 12 points off Kaneland turnovers. Sobol connected with Chase Hansen (10 yards) and Jake Walker (32 yards) on separate touchdown passes. Morris’ first point-after attempt sailed wide right, and the team was unable to convert a two-point conversion pass after its second score.

Walker’s play came after a Morris penalty and was a contested call. For a moment, he and Knights defensive back Isaac Swithers appeared to have dual possession in the end zone, but referees awarded the touchdown to the Redskins.

The Knights had made the playoffs in 18 of the past 19 seasons, missing the field only in 2007. Should Morris fail to qualify, it would be the first time Craig Lincoln for Shaw Media the Redskins have had losing Morris senior Griffin Sobol throws for a first down Friday against Kaneland in Maple Park. The Redskins records in consecutive seasons won, 26-21. since 1973 to 1976. Before 2013, Morris last missed postseason play in 2000.

Kaneland endured a pair of ultimate rarities in Week 6.

Its 14-7 road loss to Sycamore extended the Knights’ losing streak to four games, its first such skid since 1993. In addition, the game marked the first time the Knights scored in single digits in the regular season since a 21-7 loss to then-Western Sun Conference foe Glenbard South in Week 6 of 2009.

MANTENO – As if a homecoming crowd and an Interstate Eight Large School championship weren’t enough to set the stage, fireworks flew over Manteno High School on Friday night as the hosting Panthers took on the Coal City Coalers.

However, when the show ended, the two football teams settled into the kind of slugfest you’d expect from the league’s two top programs. With 5:00 left in the fourth quarter, the Panthers kicked a field goal to take the lead and the win, 24-23.

On the first two drives, both the Panthers and Coalers saw long drives stymied in the red

zone, failing to score any points.

Then, the two squads traded a pair of lost fumbles, setting up Manteno for the game’s first scoring drive.

The Panthers took over after a Nick Micetich swing pass was ruled a lateral and it was recovered by Manteno. On the fourth play of the drive, Manteno quarterback Ethan Kaufman took the right edge and ran past the Coal City defense on his way to a 32-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

JOLIET – In the annual Battle of Ridge Road between Southwest Prairie Conference rivals Minooka and Plainfield South football, the records of the two teams can generally be thrown out the window. It’s usually a battle to the finish.

Friday night’s game between the two schools was no exception, as Plainfield South held off a late Minooka charge to beat the Indians, 27-19.

Minooka (3-4, 2-3 SPC) began the game by giving Plainfield South (3-4, 3-2) a steady dose of Nathan Gunn, as the senior running back had 18 carries for 76 yards in the first quarter alone. His last carry of the period covered seven yards and ended in the end zone. The kick was wide, however, and Minooka led, 6-0, after a quarter.

It didn’t take long for Plainfield South to respond. The Cougars recovered a squib kick at their own 45, and a pass from Braden Lentini to Kyle Coleman gained 16 yards and a late hit penalty tacked on 15 more.

Wilmington dominates Seneca

Shaw Media Correspondent SENECA – The Wilmington football team increased its winning streak over host Seneca to 13 games Friday night with a 40-20 victory.

The Wildcats clinched sole possession of their seventh straight Interstate Eight Conference Small Division championship and relegated Seneca to no better than a third-place finish.

Yet the completely one-sided blowout that seemed to be materializing early turned competitive.

The Wildcats looked unstoppable for the majority of the first quarter.

Seneca’s opening drive lost 8 yards, and the Wildcats scored in four plays on their first series. Their second drive lasted just one play when, after another Fighting Irish three-and-out, Mason Southall threw his second

touchdown pass 68 yards to Alex Ziomie.

When Seneca’s next drive also ended with a punt, things were looking bleak for the Irish. They got a boost when Joey Rasmussen recovered a Wilmington fumble, only to punt for the fourth time on the first play of the second quarter.

Another Wilmington fumble, recovered by Seneca’s Alex Thornley, gave the Irish another possession, and that time they capitalized. A Thornley run for 20 yards cut the field in half and, after a personal-foul penalty seemed to stall the Irish, an Arik Applebee 30-yard pass to Baley Lejawa got them near the goal line.

Applebee punched the ball into the end zone on a sneak two plays later.

on the next two Wilmington series. Seneca got within 2714 before halftime thanks to the play of Zach Russell, who completed passes on five consecutive plays and added a 1-yard touchdown plunge on the final first half series.

At halftime, the Irish had matched the Wildcats in first downs with seven, although the 110 yards McWilliams had gained on just six carries had given Wilmington a sizeable yardage advantage. Seneca gained the initial three first downs of the second half.

Seneca’s Kale Walsh recovered yet another Wilmington fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, but the Irish turned the ball over on downs.

After a Wilmington punt, a long Seneca drive ended with a 20-yard Thornley touchdown run on fourth down to make it a seven-point game with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

All top bridge players are good at math. But a lot of the sums should not be beyond anyone.

Look at today’s South hand. Partner opens one club, East passes, South responds one spade, West intervenes with two hearts, North passes, and East passes. What should South do now?

At the table, South, someone who has been successful in his career, passed out two hearts.

What was he thinking? As soon as North opened one club, South should have said to himself, “I have 14 points; we are bidding at least game.”

South should have made a takeout double. North would have bid two spades, showing three-card support. (With four spades, he would have raised to two spades on round two.) Then South would have jumped to four spades.

How should South plan the play in four spades after West leads the club queen?

One other point in the auction: East should not have passed over two hearts with four trumps and a void. He should have bid (three or) four hearts.

South is faced with losers in each suit. But he will survive just as long as he plays low from the dummy at trick one. Suppose East ruffs (it is stronger defense to discard) and shifts to a heart. (South won’t misguess that suit if left to himself.) West wins and gives his partner another ruff – again, declarer must play a low club from the dummy. Say East exits with a heart to dummy’s king.

Declarer draws trumps, cashes his club king, crosses to dummy with a diamond, and discards his diamond loser on the club ace to get home.

DEAR DOCTOR K: I’d like to be more active. Do you think a digital fitness monitor will help?

DEAR READER: When digital fitness monitors (DFMs) became available several years ago, I was initially skeptical.

I figured they would be the latest example of our fascination with electronic devices and that people would quickly tire of them.

Well, surveys show that some people have quickly tired of them and left them to collect dust in a drawer. However, many folks use them consistently and swear by them. Different strokes for different folks.

DFMs come in wearable styles such as wristbands, watches and pendants, or hand-held pieces you can clip onto a sleeve or slip into a pocket. They monitor one or more things that affect your physical fitness. They also nag you when you’ve fallen behind your personal goals – but it’s hard to get mad at them.

DFM features may be simple, tracking the number of steps you take or the calories you burn. Or they may be more sophisticated, capturing your heart rate and sleep patterns. Some have alarms that remind you to be more active, or announce that you’ve reached a goal.

Most allow you to chart your progress online.

Many let you virtually compete with family and friends.

But do DFMs make you more active? Research suggests they do. In an analysis of 26 studies, pedometer users added more than 2,000 steps per day to their baseline over 18 weeks. More important, they lowered their blood pressure and body mass index.

DFM prices vary widely. If you’re strapped for cash, buy a basic pedometer, which simply counts your steps.

Once you have a DFM,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff determine your baseline by wearing the pedometer for three days from the time you get up until bedtime. Divide the total steps taken by three, to get an idea of your average steps per day. Each week, add 500 steps per day until you reach your goal. Many experts recommend aiming for 10,000 steps a day.

With or without a DFM, it’s a good idea to add more walking to your routine. Dr. Richard Ginsburg, a psychologist with Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, suggests the following to sneak more steps into your day: – Get a dog. You’ll have to walk the animal at least once or twice a day.

– Consider sports.

Take up golf, for example, which involves a lot of walking.

– Visit walking-only destinations. You could log a few miles at a museum, botanical garden or amusement park.

– Window-shop at the mall. One lap around an average mall’s upper level ranges from a quarter to a half mile.

For people who really want to adopt a healthier lifestyle, digital fitness monitors make it easier to do. Some of my patients, and my friends, seem almost obsessed with them.

One of my patients has chosen not just to average 10,000 steps a day – he has to beat that number every day. This is a healthy obsession to have!
