PADS shelters need volunteers Program to help homeless begins Oct. 19; 3 shifts need to be covered

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A cold front is expected this weekend, with the high temperature expected to be only in the 50s.

It’s a reminder that even colder weather is near.

To help protect those most vulnerable to the forthcoming winter weather, several Morris churches have once again agreed to serve, at least one night a week, as a Grundy Area PADS homeless shelter site from Oct. 19 to April 25.

Peace Lutheran Church, First United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Immaculate Conception Church and Living Word Bible Church are participating this year, PADS secretary Tammy Alvarez said.

While its shelters are in place, PADS is looking for volunteers to cover three shifts, seven days a week at the sites.

The first shift is from 6:30 to 10:45 p.m., the second is from 10:45 p.m. to 2:45 a.m. and the

PADS board President Tom Hardman said the program particularly is in need of volunteers for shifts on Tuesdays and weekends.

Alvarez said it’s hardest to fill the second and third shifts.

“I’m still concerned whether they’ll be filled,” she said. “Our friends and family have been reaching out, especially on social media such as Facebook.

We’ve gotten about 15 volunteers from that effort whom we didn’t expect to have.”

More still are needed, Alvarez said. Volunteers at the shelter sites will provide homeless individuals with a safe overnight shelter from the elements, a sleeping pad with a blanket and sheets, towels and a place to clean up each night, an evening meal, breakfast and a sack lunch for the next day and general assistance, according to a PADS news release.

• Javier A. Garcia, 32, of Aurora, was arrested by Minooka police Thursday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and driving with a suspended license.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Kevin Akre found out last year that his birthday, Dec. 5, would be a time his family finally would have a Christmas they could relax and enjoy together.

“It was awesome. My wife cried and I did too, a little bit.

I can’t lie. The weight of everything, the relief that we could sit back and enjoy the holidays, was incredible. I was able to show my kids that Christmas was still here and that Santa provided this year,” Akre said.

Akre dedicated six years of his life to the Army, including two tours in Iraq. He and his wife, Sarah Akre, and their two children, Devon, 6, and Elina, 4, received in 2014 a Christmas wish from nonprofit Operation St. Nick, which gave the family an full holiday package, including food and gifts.

For the past 33 years, Operation St. Nick has blessed military families in Grundy County with its 12 Days of Christmas program. The Morris Herald-News and Operation St. Nick will be partnering again to make Christmas brighter for those who have served the country through the military.

Wishes will be granted Dec. 12 to Dec. 23.

“I’ve heard some wonderful stories throughout the years,” said Joe Schmitz, president of Operation St. Nick. “We want to help the soldiers and families out there. We are the land of the free, because of the brave.”

The nonprofit grants $2,500 worth of wishes to 12 Grundy County families with current military personnel of at least two years, or those honorably discharged. In past years, some wishes granted have included providing mortgage assistance, flying people home for the holidays, buying Christmas gifts and meals, as well as assisting disabled veterans with ramps for their homes.

How to apply To apply for the 12 Days of Christmas program, pick up an application at the Morris Herald-News office, 1802 N. Division St., Suite 314, in the Morris Business Technology Center, or at any Grundy County Standard Banks.

Applications also can be found online at www.MorrisHerald-News.com by clicking on the 12 Days of Christmas ad. The application period starts today and applications must be filled out by the service person or his or her spouse or significant other and submitted by 5 p.m. Nov. 16.

“My son was excited as heck about the Legos – I mean through-the-roof excited. My daughter received a lot of dressup clothes, and that is definitely her thing,” Kevin Akre said.

“We had a good holiday.”

Operation St. Nick has other programs throughout the year to help those living in Grundy County, provided through an annual $190,000 budget, according to Schmitz. To pay for these programs, two fundraisers are held each year.

One is a live radio auction where more than 200 items are auctioned off on WCSJ FM 103.1. Last year, the auction raised $121,000. The first year the auction was held, in 1982, it brought in $785. This year’s auction is from 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 6. Additionally, $42,000 was raised this past summer at the annual “Christmas in July” fundraiser at Clayton’s Tap in downtown Morris. Schmitz said other funding is provided through memorials and donations.

Commission OKs tattoo parlor location

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – More than 90 minutes of debate took place Wednesday night in a public hearing regarding the proposed location for a tattoo and body piercing establishment in a Business 3: Commercial District at 1368 N. Liberty St. The Morris Planning Commission voted, 3-2-1, to recommend the tattoo parlor in the location. Barry Narvick abstained, while John Wilkinson and Randy Werden voted no.

Joann Gretencord, Jim Garling and Jim Jennings voted yes. The Morris City Council will discuss and possibly vote on the permit Monday.

The commission heard from residents and property owners both for and against the proposed location, near several medical businesses – particularly Morris Hospital.

The request was made by Eric Sieczynski for a conditional

permitted use permit in the commercial district.

Attorney John Peacock, on behalf of Sieczynski, said it is a legitimate business and there is nothing wrong with the location, adding that the zoning has been zoned commercial for over 20 years. The property originally was a home. Sieczynski has been properly certified and working in the tattoo and body piercing business for over 10 years.

Three property owners objected to the permit in the specific location and Peacock was made aware of a fourth during the hearing. Among them was from a Morris Hospital representative, who argued it was detrimental to businesses in the area and would reduce the property value of the hospital, which is the largest employer in Morris.

Brian Barkley, a nearby businessman and property owner, objected because tenants of Elliot Manor are in dis-

agreement with it, as well as his own personal belief that it is not the proper location. He also argued that two tattoo parlors in a city of approximately 14,000 people is too many.

Barkley stated that Los Angeles has four parlors per 100,000 people and Boston has six parlors per 100,000 people, and the cities are two of the top 10 cities with the most tattoo shops in America.

“Nobody has been able to tell us how this is going to be detrimental,” Peacock said after hearing public comment.

Morris to host annual alumni football game SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – Alumni from Morris and Minooka will play in a charity football game against each other at 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 27 at Morris Community High School.

All proceeds raised will benefit the athletic department of Morris High School.

This is the third annual game played between the teams, but the first played in Morris and with the proceeds going to Morris High School, according to a news release from event organizers.

The past two years have raised more than $10,000 for the Minooka Athletic Boosters. A year ago, Morris came out on top, 26-12, following an 8-8 tie the previous year.

The game will be played as

a regular high school football game with a few rule changes to protect the players (such as no special teams play). Each player has to sign a waiver releasing the school for liability as well ensuring no risk to the school, according to the news release.

The main purpose of this Shaw Media file photo event is to raise money to help Morris fund its sports teams. Special Connections athletes get big wins

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Special Connections Special Olympics athletes brought home the gold again this year as they competed at state in golf, track and field, aquatics and bocce ball.

Kelly Thompson, executive director of Special Connections, credits the athletes with the success the program has seen.

“I give all the credit to the athletes,” she said. “They put the time in to work on their skills and have a positive attitude.”

Forty-five of the Special Connections athletes qualified for state Special Olympics competitions and 21 walked away from their events as gold medal winners and state champions. Before the creation of Special Connections, two agencies teamed up to run the Special Olympics teams for the Grundy County area.

Thompson said one of the reasons Special Connections was started was to have one agency that could help local athletes prepare for competing and to give them a group of peers to work with toward their goal.

Special Connections has 120 athletes who compete in at least one of the six sports offered.

In addition to the summer sports – golf, track and field, aquatics and bocce ball – bowling and basketball also are offered. On Saturday, 16 bowlers with Special Connections advanced to the sectional tournament, which is scheduled for Nov. 7 in Rockford.

Thompson said to advance to sectionals, a gold medal must be won. The state Special Olympics Summer Games were June 12

to 14 at Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University. In addition to the 21 gold medals Special Connections athletes received, nine athletes received silver, 16 received bronze, 14 received fourth place and another seven took home between fifthand seventh-place finishes.

“Their positive attitude is to do their best while still having fun,” Thompson said.

Eight Special Connections athletes participated in the state golf tournament Sept. 12 at Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth, with five taking gold medals.

Pastor to take time off for jazz, family

In the evening hours, that same jazz music emanates from a bright gold saxophone played by the pastor.

Backus has Rev. Dr. Roy combined the Backus love of Christ with the love of the rich notes he can create to enhance worship services with his congregation.

“We’ve created a music and drama team that will have activities in the community,” Backus said. “The church will work around music and story at the same time.”

Backus, who came to Morris seven years ago to become pastor at the church, will be taking a sabbatical next year – a time to engage in reflection and renewal. He intends to use that time to attend classes and jazz festivals where not only can he listen to the music that brings his heart warmth, but also get better at playing the music so he can use it in his Morris ministry even more.

First Presbyterian has received a $50,000 grant to enable Backus to participate in the 2015 National Clergy Renewal Program. The church is one of 144 congregations in the United States selected to participate in the grant program funded

by Lilly Endowment Inc. and administered by the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis.

Sabbatical is based on the idea of the “Sabbath time” concept, with a pastor’s seventh year of service acting as the seventh day of rest.

The time is used for participants to not only reflect and renew their own spirit, but also to allow time for the participant’s family to come together and renew their bonds, as the family often also has stress and demands placed on them as they support the pastor.

Backus said this summer marked his seventh summer, so sabbatical typically would have been taken this year. But with the addition of associate pastor Jeri Baker, he wanted to hold off a year to get her settled before taking the time for himself and his family.

The grant reads: “From New York to Montreax, the Rhine to the Chicago River, Jazz Schools to Colleges of Music, a weary soul to a renewed spirit ... these are the stops and transitions along the journey on which we hope to send our beloved pastor for his renewal sabbatical.”

In addition to taking time to appreciate and hone his saxophone skills, Backus said he and his family will spend some time together on a vacation where they can re-energize the family bonds that have always been an important part of their life.

Scheidt has cerebral palsy and is limited to parks and recreation centers that are handicap-accessible.

With the help of Exelon Generation, Ethan’s family now is able to consider Exelon Generation’s Danielson Stevenson Park, an option when looking for recreational fun.

Leading jazz alto saxophonist Phil Woods dies at age 83

By CHARLES J. GANS The Associated Press NEW YORK – Phil Woods, a leading alto saxophonist in mainstream jazz for more than 60 years whose piercing solos could also be heard on hit records by Billy Joel and Paul Simon, has died. He was 83.

Woods died Tuesday in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, said Philip Bensing, owner of the Bensing-Thomas Funeral Home.

Woods gave his last concert on Sept. 4 in Pittsburgh, using oxygen to complete a performance of the classic album “Charlie Parker With Strings” with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. That night he announced he had emphysema and was retiring.

Woods grew up in the Swing Era where his early influences included alto saxophonists Benny Carter and Johnny Hodges. He made his name as a fiery disciple of bebop pioneer Charlie “Bird” Parker, earning the nickname “the new Bird” after Parker’s untimely death in 1955. He was married to Parker’s widow, Chan, for 17 years.

Woods released more than 50 albums as a leader and many more as a sideman with

such jazz luminaries as Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and Clark Terry. He won four Grammys.

But Woods was perhaps best known outside the jazz world for his alto sax solo at the end of Joel’s 1977 hit recording “Just the Way You Are.” He also performed on recordings

by Paul Simon (“Have a Good Time”) and Steely Dan (“Doctor Wu”).

Philip Wells Woods was born on Nov. 2, 1931 in Springfield, Massachusetts. After inheriting an alto sax from his uncle, he began taking lessons at the age of 12. As a teenager in 1945, he heard Parker’s bebop recordings with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

“It was some truly new music and just completely freaked me out,” Woods recalled in a 1992 AP interview.

After graduating high school, he moved to New York where he studied classical music by day at Juilliard and jazz in the clubs at night.

In the mid-1950s, Woods began leading his own combos.

He got his big break when Quincy Jones asked him to join a 1956 State Department-sponsored world tour with Gillespie’s big band.

“There was a very specific reason Phil played on nearly

every album I’ve made since 1956, because he not only was the best jazz alto sax player there was, he was a truly beautiful person,” Jones said in a statement released Tuesday.

Woods toured Europe with Jones’ big band in 1959, and three years later took part in Benny Goodman’s historic tour of Russia.

Back in the United States, Woods found fewer chances to play pure jazz and grew disenchanted with studio work.

In 1968, he moved to Europe where he formed his more adventurous European Rhythm Machine which incorporated some electronic and free-jazz elements.

In the mid ’70s, Woods and his wife and manager, Jill Goodwin, settled in Delaware Water Gap in eastern Pennsylvania, where he co-founded the long-running Celebration of the Arts festival.

Woods was voted the top alto sax player nearly 30 times in Downbeat magazine’s annual readers’ poll starting in 1975.

His quintet – which included brother-in-law drummer Bill Goodwin, bassist Steve Gilmore and other musicians such as trumpeter Brian Lynch and pianist Bill Charlap – was named the top small combo several times.

Impersonator who voiced Lincoln Memorial recordings dies at 83 The ASSOCIATED PRESS GETTYSBURG, Pa. – An Abraham Lincoln impersonator whose voice stood for the 16th president’s at the Lincoln Memorial and Gettysburg ceremonies has died.

James Getty portrayed the former president for nearly four decades.

He lent his voice to recordings of his speeches at the Lincoln Memorial and other exhibits. And each November, he gave rousing recitations of the Gettysburg

Address at the battlefield cemetery. Getty died Saturday in Gettysburg at age 83.

He had been in declining health for several months and hadn’t performed as Lincoln since April. A funeral home confirmed his death.

The Illinois native served in the Navy as a radioman in the Korean War. He sang with the St. Louis Municipal Opera’s chorus, directed church choirs, taught school and managed a theme park before becoming Lincoln in 1977.

Talty Chevrolet helps fill the Grundy We Care pantry Pantry helped 236 families this month SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – On Sept. 25, Talty Chevrolet provided volunteers to unload the truck and stock the shelves at We Care of Grundy County.

“I have been in town for 15 years, and I had no idea until we started doing [fill the pantry] that there was so much need,” said Jeff O’Hare, of Talty Chevrolet, “You think about it being overseas in foreign places, but it’s right here. That’s why we help out, because if you can’t help your neighbor, who can you help?”

During the month since the last Fill the Pantry, We Care has helped 236 families from its food pantry.

We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for its pan-

try from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The NIFB is able to provide food, cleaning, and personal hygiene products to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores, such as 5.5 ounce. cartons of skillet dinners for 8 cents each, 13.3 ounce. packages of pasta salad mix for 10 cents each and 12-taco packages of taco dinners for 14 cents each.

In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program.

The EFP provided spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, beef stew, instant mashed potatoes, grape juice, chicken leg quarters, whole chickens, russet

potatoes, cereal and canned peaches.

Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include LyondellBasell and Thrivent Financial/Peace Lutheran Church.

We Care is a nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, clothing, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

Seneca Historical Guild moves locations SUBMITTED REPORT SENECA – The Seneca Historical Guild met recently to take a tour of and receive an update on the progress of Seneca Station.

The Guild recently signed a lease with the Seneca Port District to occupy the recently renovated depot for its offices, a welcome center and history museum. Seneca FFA members have relocated all of the Guild’s collection formerly located at village hall to the former train station.

Appreciation was expressed for the village council and mayor for the use of the rooms at village hall for the past four years.

Guild members will spend this winter organizing artifacts and displays with the goal of opening the building to

the public in the spring of 2016.

It also was reported that more than 100 bricks have been purchased for inscription by members of the public and local business and will be placed in the new patio that is part of the front of the depot.

The first 100 bricks have been sent for engraving, but the project will be ongoing.

Personalized bricks can be purchased for $50.

The inscribed bricks can have three lines of texts with no more than 13 characters a line (a space counts as a character.)

In other news, members reviewed the sales of “The Story of Seneca, Illinois,” a history book released this summer.

One week after playing a nearly flawless game in a 38-21 win over Sterling, the Redskins repeatedly hurt themselves with penalties against Yorkville, resulting in big plays being called back and drives stalling. Morris coach Alan Thorson hopes that gets fixed this week.

“We have to fix the mistakes,” he said. “Because DeKalb is a team that won’t let you get away with very many.

We have played some good teams. Washington is a good team and Sterling is a good team. But I think that DeKalb will be the best team we will have played so far, especially offensively. They have a lot of weapons.”

So far this year, the Barbs (4-1) have won four straight since losing their season opener to Plainfield North, outscoring their opponents, 168-84, in those four games. Quarterback Derek Kyler is a dual threat, completing 47 of 85 passes for 777 yards and 13 touchdowns without being intercepted and rushing 52 times for 233 yards and three touchdowns.

Kyler’s favorite receiver has been Cole Tucker, who has 24 catches for 453 yards and eight touchdowns, while 6-foot-6 Luke Davis has 11 catches for 167 yards and three scores.

Tony Tate has caught nine passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, and is coming off a game last week in which he had five catches for 85 yards and a TD. Running back David Long has chipped in with 379 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 49 carries.

three years. Their quarterback is very good. He runs well and throws well.”

The Redskins will counter with the running back trio of Michael Gerischer, Michael Feeney and Keagan Sobol, who have combined to run for more than 900 yards, while quarterback Nathan Guth has thrown for 297 yards and four touchdowns against no interceptions.

“Our defense has a tough

challenge this week,” Thorson said. “But overall, our defense has been pretty good this year.

We need our offense to be more consistent in our blocking and in our passing game. We need to cut down on our mistakes and penalties and not put ourselves in long-yardage situa-

tions.”

Although the Redskins were disappointed with last week’s loss, they still enter this week’s action with a 3-2 record.

“I keep reminding the kids that we were in worse shape last year,” Thorson said. “We were 2-4 after six games and

made it to the quarterfinals.

There’s no giving up in these kids or in the coaching staff. If we play like we are capable of playing, I like our chances in any game we play.

“Now, we just have to go out there and play like we know we can.”

STAFF REPORTS MORRIS – It was an upand-down night for the Morris volleyball team Tuesday, and it ended in a tough, three-set loss to Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival DeKalb.

The Redskins (7-13-2, 1-3) won the first set, 25-17, then fell behind, 11-1, in the second before losing 25-14. Morris then led the third set, 24-21, but DeKalb rallied for a 29-27 victory to take the match.

“We came out ready to play in the first game,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said. “We fell back during the second game, but the third game was a battle for each point and the game was close the entire way.

“Collectively, we made too many errors when we needed to keep the ball in play.”

Kaylin Korte provided 17 kills, 12 digs, three blocks and an ace for Morris, which visits Geneseo on Thursday. Janelle Brehm added nine kills, nine digs, two ace and one block.

Addison Polite led with 15 assists and Ashley Hood followed with eight assists, three digs and two aces. Veronica Johnson also had four blocks.

The Morris sophomore team won, 25-16, 25-18, while the freshman A team scored a 15-25, 25-20, 25-21 win and the B team won, 25-22, 23-25, 25-9.

Plano 25-25, Seneca 20-20:

The Lady Irish fell to 11-9 overall and 1-5 in the Interstate Eight with the loss. Emily Woods had six kills and seven assists for Seneca, while Karlie Cade had four points and seven assists. Mackenzie Maierhofer led with six digs.

Seneca won the sophomore match, 25-13, 25-11, to improve to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in con-

ference play, while the Irish won the freshman match, 2523, 25-10.

golf team used a familiar formula to once again capture the title at Inwood. The Indians placed four scores among the top six finishers. That helped Minooka shoot a 357, which was 34 strokes better than runner-up Plainfield East. Maddie Erickson recovered from a 47 on the front nine to shoot a 39 to finish with an 86, which gave her medalist honors by a stroke over Plainfield North’s MacKenzie Wolendowski, who won the overall league title with 28 points.

Also for Minooka coach Joe Host’s Indians, Miranda Sharp and Alli Lee both turned in scores of 90 while Lauren Goggins posted a 91. Also, Hailey Arlis and McKayla Holmes both shot a 95.

Minooka had three all-conference selections, with Erickson moving past Sharp 25.5 to 24 for third based on her performance on Wednesday, while Lee was sixth with 18.5 points. Those totals come from a combination of points for dual meets and the conference tournament.

It is easy to be complacent at the bridge table, assuming everything will be sunny. This deal would trip up the less cautious. How should South play in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest diamond and East puts up the 10?

North’s two-club rebid indicated at least a six-card suit with some 12-14 points. South, with game-going values, jumped to the logical final contract.

(Note that five clubs can be defeated if East leads a diamond.)

Declarer begins with eight top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond (trick one) and three clubs.

And surely those lovely clubs would produce six winners and two overtricks.

The original South won with his diamond jack, cashed the club queen, and led his other club. West’s discard brought the play to a grinding halt. The long pause didn’t help; declarer was doomed.

South should realize that if East gets on lead and pushes a diamond through, the contract is in jeopardy.

To stop that from happening, declarer should execute what is called an avoidance play.

He crosses to the dummy (say, with a heart) and plays a club to his 10.

Here, it wins and South takes 11 tricks after all. But even if West can produce the club jack, the contract is safe.

London averages 23.4 inches per annum. That compares with, say, 36.2 inches for Seattle, 46.2 inches for New York City, and 61.9 inches for Miami.
