2 cups white whole-wheat flour ¼ cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons matcha green tea

Cran-Lemon Tea Muffins are made green by matcha green tea powder, which is packed with antioxidants and nutrients to boost your morning.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Line a muffin pan with vegetable oil spray or paper muffin cups.

In one mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and matcha powder.

In another bowl, combine eggs,

lemon juice and zest, honey and buttermilk. Pour wet mixture into dry, then gently mix in melted coconut oil. Fold in cranberries.

Batter will be lumpy.

Scoop an equal amount of mixture into each muffin cup and

bake in preheated oven 18 to 20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool on rack about 10 minutes and then serve.

Note: Instead of coconut oil, you can use butter for a richer taste.

Grain of salt with e-cig warning Big Tobacco might have been scared straight.

Companies such as Reynolds American Inc. and Altria Group Inc. have voluntarily put some of the strongest health warnings in the industry on their entries in the fledgling e-cigarette market.

That’s a startling about-face for an industry that for decades used smoke screens to deny the horribly addictive nature of nicotine and the ill effects of tobacco despite having evidence to the contrary.

The fight ended in 1998 when the four largest domestic tobacco companies agreed to pay more than $200 billion over 25 years to settle suits by 46 attorneys general over Medicaid costs to treat smoking-related diseases.

Altria Group, the maker of Marlboro, sells MarkTen e-cigarettes with labels that flatly say, “Nicotine is addictive and habit forming, and it is very toxic.”

Altria warns against use “by children, women who are pregnant or breast feeding or persons with or at risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or taking medicine for depression or asthma.” Reynolds America, maker of Camel cigarettes, includes a similar warning on its Vuse e-cigarette packaging.

The companies might simply want to be honest about potential health hazards, but it’s hard not to be skeptical. The aggressive, voluntary labeling just might be a strategy to insulate the companies against costly future lawsuits, or to curry favor with regulators.

Whatever the motivation, the warnings are important for consumers of a product that delivers nicotine or other chemicals for inhalation before regulators can assess the health risks and impose labeling standards. Smaller companies selling e-cigarettes should follow Big Tobacco’s lead.

State gov. unaware of education spending SPRINGFIELD – So how many of your dollars are being spent on providing free college educations for state workers?

We don’t know – and that should outrage you.

We know that in past budgets the state has spent $5 million on the program known as Upward Mobility.

But if you take a careful look at this year’s state budget, you’ll find that the program has been “zeroed out,” meaning that it appears the state is no longer spending a dime on the program.

But appearances can be deceptive, especially when it comes to Illinois state government.

A quick look at the department of Central Management Services website shows that the program is plugging right along – same as always.

A call to the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees,

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder which operates the program with the state, and you’ll learn money is apparently pouring in this year.

But how much of our money is being spent? State officials aren’t saying.

I talked to a legislative budget analyst and got a shrug. The budget doesn’t say.

I filed a Freedom of Information Act, or FOIA, request with the state comptroller’s office, which pays all of the state’s bills. They responded that they just don’t know.

I filed a similar FOIA request with CMS and was told they don’t have any documents that answer the question.

Huh? They administer the pro-

gram and they don’t know how much is being spent?

That’s hard to believe.

I followed up with a phone call to one of the agency’s spokesmen, Mike Claffey, who is paid $90,000 a year to answer – or not answer – reporter questions.

He didn’t get back to me.

When Pat Quinn replaced Rod Blagojevich as governor, he promised an honest, transparent and accessible administration.

And, yet, his underlings are mum about how much money the state is spending on a particular program.

I have been asking that question for weeks and have yet to receive an answer.

In the 30 years I’ve been a journalist, I’m hardpressed to think of a time when government has been more evasive about such a straight-forward budget question.

The merits of a program

like Upward Mobility are worthy of debate.

Union leaders contend providing taxpayer-funded educations to state workers is a good thing.

But some in the private sector who have had to pay for their own schooling question the value of not only paying for their own college educations but someone else’s.

Regardless, don’t we as taxpayers deserve to know how our money is being spent?

Apparently, some in government believe the answer is “no.”

And we as citizens deserve better.

Jacob Overbeck has turned in a record of 6-0 and has allowed just one earned run in 34 innings pitched so far this season. as the Hawks have outscored their opponents, 194-18, including wins of 8-0 over Gardner-South Wilmington in the regional title game and 12-0 over Joliet St. Ray’s in the sectional final.

“If you aren’t walking guys and putting them on base and you play good defense, you have a very good chance of winning, especially at this level,” Blaine said. “Our pitchers throw strikes, and our defense is solid all the way around, too.

When you give up about a run a game, you like your chances.

“We knew we had a good chance to be a good team this year. This is a very good group of kids, both in class and on the field. They come to the park every day focused on what they need to do.”

While the pitchers do their job of throwing strikes, the Hawks’ defense has been nothing less than stellar as well.

Against St. Ray’s, Overbeck struck out four in five innings,

Blaine said. “Our pitchers have confidence in the defense behind them, and that really helps them throw strikes. They know they don’t have to strike everyone out for us to win, and that takes a lot of pressure off of them.”

While the pitching staff and defense is allowing just under a run a game, the Saratoga offense has more than held up its end of the bargain, averaging close to 10 runs a game. Overbeck leads the way there as well, hitting .569 before regional action started with a total of 26

MORRIS – Two years ago, the Saratoga baseball team made its first appearance at the IESA Class 2A finals. The Hawks lost their first game that year to eventual state champion Newton Jasper County, 12-1.

This season, Saratoga will take its 20-0 record to Eastside Centre in East Peoria once again, with Friday’s quarterfinal game beginning at 12:30 p.m. On the off chance that the first team the Hawks play – 15-1 Staunton – scores 12 runs this year, they will have accomplished qute a feat. As a team all season in 20 games, Saratoga has allowed just 18 runs.

Jacob Overbeck has been the No. 1 pitcher for the Hawks this season, as he has allowed just one earned run in 34 innings – a 0.21 ERA – while fashioning a 6-0 record. Chad Heren (5-0), Luke Olbrot (4-0), Ethan Heap (2-0) and Cody Bledsoe (1-0) round out the Hawks’ rotation.

To date, that staff hasn’t faced a lot of tough challenges,

meaning there were 11 outs for the Saratoga defense to get, and the Hawks did not commit an error. Second baseman Matthew Lopez handled four chances flawlessly, Overbeck got a pair of comebackers on the mound, first baseman Ethan Heap fielded a grounder and flipped to Overbeck covering first, left fielder Alex Cameron caught both fly balls sent hit way and shortstop Luke Olbrot and right fielder Cody Bledsoe each had a chance without an error.

MORRIS – When things haven’t been going well for your team, there is nothing like a win. When it’s a win over a big rival, it makes things that much better.

To that end, the Morris boys soccer team came up with a huge victory over Minooka on Saturday, topping the Indians, 2-1.

“We finally look like a team that wants to win,” Morris coach David Valdivia said.

“We knew Minooka was going to be difficult, as they are Class 3A and play a lot of tough teams.”

The first goal for the Redskins (7-5-2) came in the first half, when Ricardo Del Toro relentlessly tried to make something happen and he did as he crossed a ball to freshmen Collin Tucker, who headed a ball outside the 18 in the right corner.

“Tucker’s header was professional,” Valdivia said. “For a freshmen to head an upper 90 and the ball swoosh into the net, [it] got the whole team off their feet.”

The final goal came in the last five minutes of the second half, when senior Chris Chaidez put pressure on the Minooka defense, stripped the ball, made room and shot passed the keeper.

“I am so proud of Chris,” Valdivia said. “He has worked hard and his effort finally was rewarded.”

We have one fit; do we have another?

We have been looking at deciding between two possible trump suits. Of course, to have this quandary, two suits usually have to be bid and raised. And in this direction, if a fit is found and one player has a two-suiter, he often should show his second suit, especially in a competitive auction.

For example, look at today’s deal. Both South and West can help their partner’s high-level bidding decision.

After South opens one spade, West passes, North raises to two spades, and East overcalls three clubs, what should South do?

If a jump to four spades would silence the opponents, that would be a sensible choice (although it is an overbid). But what if West competes with five clubs? Should North-South let them stew or go on to five spades? Neither player knows. However, if South rebids three diamonds, showing his second suit, North will be aware of the double fit and can happily bid on at the five-level.

And, yes, West can also make a good bid. Over South’s three-diamond rebid, West should advance with three hearts. This cannot just be advertising a long heart suit and sufficient values to compete at the three-level, because West did not intervene on the first round.

This bid shows heart length and club support (although admittedly not necessarily as good as queenfourth).

Now look at the full deal. You will see that five clubs is unbeatable for plus 600. But five spades doubled goes down only two, minus 500.

When you have a double fit, it is usually best to declare, especially with the minority of the high-card points.

A lifetime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Minooka where she was an active volunteer, a former director and teacher of the RE program, CCW member as well as a member of the Minooka Womens Club. She traveled extensively in her lifetime and enjoyed playing cards-bridge, pinnochle and euchre to name a few. The Lunch Bunch was another favorite social gathering she looked forward to.

Community Hospice.

Best of Show art show winners

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – “Love and Respect” is what Mark and Erin Fiske built their marriage on, and it’s what inspired his Best of Show painting by the same name at this year’s Grundy County Corn Festival Art Show.

The painting – which uses technique mixte – was created from a photo of Mark’s and Erin’s hands with their wedding rings on.

“It’s a special image,” Mark Fiske said. “ ‘Love’ and ‘Respect’ are engraved in the rings, love in mine, respect in hers.”

Fiske grew up in Morris, and graduated from Morris Community High School in 2002. As the son of band director, Mike Fiske, Mark knew he wanted to inspire children just as his father had.

“Having my dad as a band director and seeing his love of teaching and how he inspired his students is what pushed me into teaching,” Fiske said.

“It would allow me to continue to create art, but also inspire children.”

After high school, Fiske attended Joliet Junior College for two years and then went to Olivet Nazarene University, where he studied education.

“I really started to enjoy painting during this period,” Fiske said. “It’s when I creat-

Typically, Fiske spends his time creating characters he hopes will one day become the cast of a children’s book.

One of his character creations also took first place at the art show.

“I’ve created five characters and the world they would live in and the plants that would inhabit the world,” Fiske said. “They are much more whimsical.”

Neighbors object to special ed co-op’s planned use of Morris home

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A special education classroom destined for the Fields of Saratoga subdivision faces opposition from a group of neighborhood homeowners.

The non-traditional, community-based classroom would be in a single-family home on Indian Grass Road.

Students from the Grundy County Special Education Cooperative would learn cooking, cleaning and other lifeskills lessons at the home.

A group of Fields of Saratoga neighbors object to the classroom, citing a wide range of fears – potentially lower property values, new building permits and school bus traf-

fic, among other concerns.

The homeowners and a few local real estate professionals brought their concerns to a Planning and Zoning Board meeting last week.

“For me, it’s not about the kids being there,” Karen Zelko of the Fields of Saratoga Homeowners Association said Monday. “It’s about how this changes the structure of our neighborhood.”

Concern that a classroom facility would affect neighborhood property values is a major concern among homeowners, Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said.

According to Cheshareck, schools are conditionally permitted to build on residential property.

finitive, the co-op is requesting a text amendment to existing municipal code specifically permitting a home to be used as a special-education, life-skills classroom.

“By doing that, it would be available to that house and maybe if they build another house in another neighborhood, they’d have that availability to apply again,” Cheshareck said.

Concerns about increased bus traffic and teacher parking also were raised, Cheshareck said.

The co-op and Grundy Area Vocational Center have partnered for the project.

Building and trades students from the vocational center are constructing the home.

According to Neil Sanburg,

the co-op’s executive director, no one would permanently live inside the house and students would use the space during classroom hours.

Young adults from the coop’s REACH transition program would be the only group using the classroom. The group ranges between 15 and 20 students, depending on enrollment, Sanburg said.

The transition program is designed for special education students ages 18 to 22 who have finished their academic careers and could benefit from more practical lessons.

The co-op’s existing lifeskills classroom is in a small apartment on the campus of Minooka Community High School.

The co-op began pursuing

the new classroom in April.

Sandburg attended a planning and zoning meeting at that time to make the city aware of the co-op’s intentions.

He said he was surprised to see opposition from the homeowners at last week’s meeting.

“There were a lot of people not in attendance who have indicated their support for the project, but you don’t always hear from those,” he said.

Sanburg said the co-op education board will discuss the concerns before deciding how it wants to proceed with the project.

The planning and zoning board is scheduled to meet again Oct. 29. The project will undergo more vetting at that time, Cheshareck said.

Grundy United Way surpasses fundraising goal by $95K

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – “Just amazing” is how Grundy United Way Board President John Roundtree described the organization’s fundraising efforts this year.

The local nonprofit raised an estimated $570,000 this fiscal year – nearly $100,000 more than the $475,000 it hoped to raise. While final numbers are still being tabulated, the estimate was announced earlier this month at the annual United Way campaign celebration dinner.

“Even going through these tough economic times, we exceed our goal. It just amazes me,” Roundtree said.

United Way consistently surpasses its yearly fundraising goal, but rarely does the organization eclipse its target by 20 percent, making 2014 a “very good year,” Executive Director Karen Nall said.

The celebration dinner alone raised nearly $12,000, setting another record for the most dollars raised at the event.

“This is probably the most that we’ve ever been over our fundraising goal,” Nall said.

Roundtree said the organization’s largest financial contributor is Exelon, but the local small business community also was very supportive.

“The number of individual donors that we have is pretty incredible, too,” Roundtree said. “There are people who are

touched when they work with one of our partner agencies and then will make a donation to the United Way.” More than $380,000 of the money raised is already budgeted, divided among the United Way’s 29 local partners. Partners are chosen based on specific programs they can offer.

The United Way board looks at needs within Grundy County to determine what programs would be most beneficial.

Mental health services, childhood obesity education and youth activities were focal points for this year’s programming, Nall said.

“A lot of it is for youth, though, because they’re our future, so we want to make sure we pave the way,” Nall said.

For the first time this year, United Way added a therapeutic horseback riding program, administered by Sunrise Center North.

The lessons are offered as a therapeutic tool to people with special needs, trauma disorders and other disabilities.

After allotment to the partners, the remaining money will go toward other local programs and services, still to be decided.

Nall said the board will spend the next few months determining how to use this year’s funding overflow. In the past, the nonprofit has offered mini grants to local families and has contributed aid to last year’s multiple natural disasters.

CHANNAHON – Friday is the deadline to sign up for the “Pelican Paddle,” a search for pelicans organized by the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

MORRIS – Those wishing to vote in the Nov. 4 general election who are not registered to vote, or need to update their registration information, have until next week to do so.

Oct. 7 is the last day to register or update an address in order to vote in November, according to a news release from Grundy County Clerk Lana Phillips.

It is the responsibility of each person to update his or her registration if there is a new address or if a name has changed. A new law will allow 17-year-olds who will be 18 on or before the Nov. 4 election to register now and vote in the General Election.

To register, bring two forms of valid identification

that prove your name twice and address once.

Registration may be done at the County Clerk’s office, in room 12 of the Grundy County Courthouse, 111 E. Washington St. in Morris; at the Secretary of State’s driver’s license facility when applying for or updating your license; or with any appointed registrars.

The Grundy County Clerk’s office will be open extended hours on the following days: from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
