RUSSELL C. OLSON Born: Dec. 16, 1929 Died: Dec. 22, 2014 Russell C. Olson, age 85, of Morris, passed away peacefully, December 22, 2014, at the Regency Healthcare Center in Morris. Born December 16, 1929, he was the son of the late Oscar and Anna (Fatland) Olson.

At the age of 16, Russell acquired his pilot’s license, by flying his father’s small plane, solo. He served in the Army during the years 1951 to 1953.

On December 16, 1950, he married Margaret Rose. Russell was a farmer and an over the road truck driver.

Russell is survived by his wife; and his two sons, Tom (Debbie) Olson of Fort Villa, IN and Jim Olson of Morris; three grandchildren, Stephen, Anna and John Olson; and his step brother, Dan (Linda) Olson of Morris.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Russell’s life will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 1:00 p.m., at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, located at 301 W. Washington Street in Morris. Officiating will be Pastor Steve Larson of First Baptist Church of Morris.

BARBARA A. WILLIAMS Elwyn “LeRoy” Thurwanger, age 86, of Ottawa, died on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Florida.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at St. Columba Church, in Ottawa, with Rev. David Kipfer, Pastor. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Mueller Funeral Home, in Ottawa, with liturgical prayers at 3:45 p.m.

LeRoy was born on March 12, 1928, in Kewanee, to Edward and Elsie (Hawks) Thurwanger. He married Mary E. Faber, on May 3, 1952, in Santa Barbara, California.

LeRoy served in the United States Army, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Korea. He was a milkman, was self employed as a Sealtest distributor, worked at Pitstick Dairy for most of his career, and then retired from Prairie Farms.

LeRoy was a member of St. Columba Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Ottawa; 6 children, Donna (Robert) Walton, Mary Ann (Charles) Van Grevenhof, Cathy Fultz, Janet Cetwinski, Gary (Donna) Thurwanger, and David (Sandy) Thurwanger; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many loving cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons-in-law, James Fultz, and Darrell Poirier; 5 brothers and 3 sisters.

Barbara was raised and educated in Odessa. Although she raised her family in the Channahon/Minooka area, home will always be Odessa, Missouri.

Crystal Nelson, with the food pantry run by the Church of Hope in Gardner, said she helped 296 families during 2014 and already has helped 10 families this year. The first two she gave food to on New Year’s Day. “We had four families just yesterday. It’s hard times, that’s for sure,” Nelson said.

Nelson said she gets help from St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington, as well as donations from area

residents.

MORRIS – The holidays are behind us, but the need for food and personal items in Grundy County continue.

Area food pantries said donations typically are the largest during November and December with Thanksgiving and Christmas, but for various reasons slow down once the new year rolls around.

“Historically donations go down in January and February,” said Cathy Milne of Help for Hope and formerly with Coal City Clothes Closet. “As weather starts to get nicer and people get out of their house, more in the spring, it will pick back up.”

Residents continue to show up for food and personal items like toilet paper, laundry detergent, toothpaste and shampoo though.

Donna Larkin Lake with Northern Illinois Food Bank said the drop off in donations is felt at all levels during January and the organization is trying to get the message out that hunger is a year-round need.

“Foods and funds are on peoples minds during the holidays,” Larkin Lake said. “We appreciate that at the holiday time, but that need is ongoing.”

Milne said Help for Hope is focusing its efforts on the working poor and keeping later hours so those coming home from work can still get assistance. She said the majority of residents in her area get their food from the Coal City Food Pantry at Coal City United Methodist Church, so she is focusing more on other needs.

“We really need paper products like toilet paper, paper towels,” Milne said. “We also need laundry and dish washing soap, and nonperishable food items since we don’t have a refrigerator.”

Those needing assistance or who would like to donate can contact Help for Hope at

her area are referred to the pantry when they contact We Care of Grundy County, or they learn of the pantry through word of mouth.

The pantry is run with donations from the townships, Grundy County Farm Bureau, and food drives from local schools and groups.

“Our community is very generous,” she said.

We Care of Grundy County’s food pantry services those in Morris with everything from food to toilet paper and personal items.

Executive Director Denise Gaska, said compared to the rest of the year the donations drop in January, but because We Care gets so many holiday donations it usually holds them over. The summer months is where they see their biggest needs.

“We see the biggest need in summer when kids aren’t getting a free lunch at school so the needs are greater at home,” Gaska said.

Gardner has a strong 2014, State plan would help nuclear plants plans the same for 2015 by punishing carbon-based providers

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com GARDNER – Residents in Gardner again enjoyed a break from water and sewer bills in December to Commissioner Dick Hileman said.

The village started giving the Christmas-time break in 2009.

Hileman said he hopes the village can continue to give residents the break from that bill as officials move forward in 2015.

“We’re in financially good shape,” Hileman said. “We have no bonds, no debt, and about $2 million in the bank.”

The village has completed 98 percent of the water line replacement job it started 15 years ago, completing a big phase of it in 2014.

With the new water lines that have been added over the past decade, the village has gone from about 20 leaks a year to one or two leaks. Officials hope once they are completed it will slow down even more.

Commissioner Mike Serena said the previous water lines were installed incorrectly.

When the lines were replaced in the 1990s, gravel was not used and a leak would drain the water tower in a matter of 5 to 10 minutes, before anyone was aware there was a leak, Hileman said.

Moving forward with water and sewer project, the village now is looking at the storm sewer system.

The village will begin work on the storm sewers this year, spending between $400,000 and $450,000 to replace sections of red clay tiles that are unable to handle the drainage of water.

Serena said the village has had to battle standing water when there are heavy rains in certain areas of town, which is why the village is replacing storm sewers.

Business also has turned around in Gardner in the past

several years, with Midwest Industrial Supply going into the former Kellogg’s building and Hot & Son’s Trucking moving to the area.

Hileman said sales tax has jumped tremendously.

“We’re trying to get in a truck stop or a motel at the I-55 intersection,” Hileman said.

“If we could get one of those in, we would no longer need to collect property taxes for the village.”

The village also is hoping to be selected as one of the state’s 22 medical marijuana cultivation center locations. In September, the Gardner Village Board approved an application

by Bill and David Mennie of the village of Mark. They are waiting to hear from the state to see if it will be approved.

Hileman said the village also approved video gaming as being legally allowed in the village and the revenue from the machines has allowed the village to give back to the community.

Both Hileman and Serena said the village is often approached for donations to various causes, but they don’t believe the taxpayer’s money should be used to provide for those requests. So the addition of the video gaming allows Gardner to donate without touching taxpayer dollars.

“I’ve always been one of the guys that can’t agree with donating tax dollars. I’ve always said what I might think is a good nonprofit, the taxpayers may not,” Serena said.

Hileman said the village was able to donate to two area churches, Gardner Lions, a senior citizen group, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, as well as athletic programs at both Gardner-South Wilmington High School and Gardner Grade School.

“The mayor, Tom Wise has always believed in supporting people if we can do it,” Hileman said. “He asked me if I could find a way to do it, and this was the way.”

By JULIE WERNAU Chicago Tribune Illinois governmental agencies Wednesday issued reports proposing ways to prop up Exelon’s ailing nuclear power plants.

The agencies suggested Chicago-based Exelon’s financially struggling nuclear plants could be kept open by favoring Exelon because it creates electricity without producing greenhouse gases. The policy would punish competitors who use carbon-based fuels that produce carbon dioxide.

Several state agencies delivered reports to the state Legislature touting the environmental and economic benefits of the state’s six nuclear power plants, which are owned by Exelon, including the Dresden and Braidwood plants.

The agencies were directed to issue the reports in line with a House resolution passed last year under the direction of Speaker Michael Madigan.

“We thank the state for its attention and work on such an important issue for Illinois and the future of the state’s energy assets,” said an Exelon spokesman, adding that the company would review the report and issue a statement later.

The $31 billion company is the country’s largest owner of nuclear plants, and has been lobbying for policies that would reward it for not emitting greenhouse gases.

Madigan’s resolution also called for pro-nuclear lobbying of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, electric grid operators and Congress.

More than half the power produced in the state comes from coal and natural gas plants and renewable energy, but none of those companies has received that kind of treatment from Madigan.

Exelon expects to see a boost to its bottom line from a proposed federal “carbon rule” as its competitors face shutting down or paying to curb or offset pollution. The aggressive goals set by the U.S. EPA would reduce greenhouse gases by 30 percent from 2005 levels by 2030.

While the rule isn’t expected to kick in for three years, the company is pushing state lawmakers to hash out legislation in the spring, saying it will decide the fate of several financially ailing nuclear plants this year.

An autopsy performed contributed to death CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – An 86-year-old Channahon woman may have died from the cold weather.

The Will County Coroner’s office reported Betty L. Price was found in a “cold garage” Monday near her residence in the 24000 block of Marble Road. Price was pronounced

Wednesday “revealed cold exposure is a possible contributing factor in her death,” according to the coroner’s office.

Will County Sheriff’s police are investigating. The coroner’s office said toxicology results still are pending.

Channahon cop goes above and beyond Chief: He probably saved a kidnap victim’s life

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon police officer John Blough thought he was pulling over a lost motorist just before midnight a few weeks ago.

By the time his shift ended, the driver had been arrested on several domestic abuse charges. His boss, Police Chief Jeff Wold, said Blough probably saved the life of the car’s passenger – a Joliet woman who allegedly had just been thrown off a second-floor balcony and forced into the vehicle to be taken to an unknown location.

“I’m not sure what would have happened to her if Officer

Blough hadn’t made the traffic stop,” Wold said.

Blough, a fourth-year rookie, received this week a letter of commendation from his department for the Dec. 22 incident.

“Your actions removed a violent offender from the streets and saved the victim from additional harm,” Wold stated to Blough in the letter. “You more than likely saved the victim’s life.”

It was midnight, almost on the dot, when Blough saw a Dodge Charger headed east on Route 6 near McKinley Woods Road with its high beams on.

The driver had passed a couple of cars and had not dimmed his lights. He also was driving much slower than the speed limit; Blough thought maybe he was lost and looking at road signs.

Once pulled over, the driver was polite and apologized for the high beams. The passenger was facing away from him, but

Blough said she told him they were going to her mother’s house in Ottawa.

That was the first red flag: going east would be the wrong direction for Ottawa, and children know how to get to their mothers’ homes, he said.

Blough said the driver told him he didn’t have his license.

He gave him a name Blough soon discovered was a fake.

The age the driver gave him didn’t ring true either.

The supervising night shift officer, Dustin Carlson, soon pulled up behind Blough’s squad, and Blough told him he suspected something else was going on. When Blough returned to the Charger, the situation became clear.

“At that time, she leaned over to me,” he said of the passenger, “and I saw fresh bruises on her face. I asked her if she was in a fight, and he said yes. ... I asked him if it was with him, and he gave a nervous

The company has signaled to legislators that it would like to be included in some kind of “clean portfolio standard” under which it and solar and wind power producers are rewarded for providing energy to the state.

Either that, or the company will push for a price on carbon that would make its noncarbon-emitting plants more competitive.

But the nuclear giant isn’t

merely waiting for the money to appear.

Last May, Exelon shrewdly turned its weakness as a nuclear generator into a long-term strength.

The strategy involved two nuclear plants in Illinois and a third in New Jersey. The three plants lost out on power contracts at an auction because Exelon bid them high and the plants were deemed too expensive. But those losses ultimately became a win for Exelon because the market was left with fewer plants to provide power, thus driving up prices for Exelon’s remaining plants.

More recently, Exelon

successfully lobbied the PJM Interconnection – which oversees the grid in 13 states, including the Chicago region – to propose a “no excuses” policy that would increase consumers’ electric bills and financially reward the one form of power it relied on during last year’s polar vortex when record-setting cold set in: nuclear.

A year ago, coal-fired generating plants stopped working because their conveyor belts froze and natural gas plants couldn’t obtain enough fuel in time. Meanwhile, nuclear plants kept running at 95 percent capacity.

After Monday’s Village Board meeting, where Blough received the commendation, Trustee Missey Schumacher said Blough is a hero for recognizing a dangerous situation.

“He more than likely saved her life if not that night, then some night in the future,” Schumacher said. “I thank

John for trusting his instincts because that could have been a routine traffic stop where they were sent on their way.”

Blough said he appreciated receiving the commendation.

“I was just doing a job,” he said. “That’s what we’re all here for. It’s always a team job, and I enjoyed that our department recognizes when a good job is done.”

COAL CITY – Coal City school board president Ken Miller told the board Wednesday one of Superintendent Kent Bugg’s daughters is experiencing a serious illness requiring continuing medical care.

Bugg said in a phone call Wednesday his daughter, Megan, was diagnosed with cancer on Dec. 30 and has started chemotherapy.

“During the next 30 days or so, Dr. Bugg will primarily be with his daughter,” Miller read from a statement. “He may work from time to time, either in the district or at the medical facility, as he is able. But Dr. Bugg’s focus right now needs to be with his daugh-

ter.”

The board approved the appointment of Tammy Elledge, director of curriculum and assessment, to serve as acting superintendent on days when Bugg is unable to work.

Miller said there are certain things only a superintendent can do, so the board needed to appoint Elledge to serve as acting superintendent when Bugg is not available.

“That was the hardest thing I’ve had to read,” Miller said after the meeting.

Bugg said he was aware of the situation and appreciates that the board has given him a 30-day leave of absence if he needs it.

“I don’t know if I will need it, but I’m glad they offered it to me,” Bugg said.

About that time, Blough and Carlson were notified by Western Will County Communication Center that it was looking for the same type vehicle in which a female was reported being held captive by an ex-boyfriend.

“We advised WESCOM we had that vehicle,” Blough said.

Minooka Police Sgt. Matt Chinski arrived to assist.

The driver, Derrick D. Williams-Scott, 26, of Joliet, was arrested. Blough said he cursed at the officers and tried to kick out the squad car’s window.

Once Williams-Scott was away from his passenger, Blough said the woman told him Williams-Scott hurt her.

“She was very scared,” Blough said, “and she was in excruciating pain. She couldn’t even lie down. ... Channahon paramedics are top-notch.

They got her safely out of the car, and they did a good job at calming her down and realizing that helping her was their No. 1 priority.”

Williams-Scott was charged with aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, unlawful restraint and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence by Joliet police. Channahon turned him over to Joliet police since the crimes occurred there, Wold said.

Bond was set for Williams-Scott at $500,000. He is

MORRIS – Imagine a blustery winter day in 1892, you have just completed an arduous sea journey to the New World. Your mother has told you that a new life is to be had here. This New World is promised to be free of poverty, famine, drought and religious persecution.

Ellis Island, America’s federal immigration station, is now your gateway between the Old World and the New World.

Shabbona Middle School students recently were invited to imagine a similar scenario and put their ideas into an essay, according to a news release. The Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored an essay contest entitled, “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island.”

Each student was to imagine him or herself traveling through Ellis Island in 1892 and describing the experience to a cousin who never has heard of Ellis Island. The contest was open to all students from fifth through eighth grades in Grundy County.

Quinn’s leaves disappointing legacy Only days remain in Gov. Pat Quinn’s tenure as Illinois’ top elected official.

His legacy as governor can be summed up in one word: Disappointing.

The Pat Quinn who leaves Springfield on Monday when Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner is sworn in is not the same Pat Quinn who entered politics in the early 1980s.

The early Pat Quinn was a political reformer. He fought for the public and increasing its power in government.

He fought for smaller government. He became a consumer watchdog. Those traits gave hope that maybe Quinn would do the same as the state’s top leader.

Instead, this Pat Quinn leaves office as a typical Springfield politician, finding jobs for friends and failing to change how things work in state government. At least he’s not heading to jail, which is an accomplishment for an Illinois governor.

Quinn, as lieutenant governor, assumed the governor position in January 2009 after Rod Blagojevich was impeached. Since taking office, Quinn has been a poor leader. Too often, he stood on the sidelines and watched.

When the state needed leadership on pension reform, Quinn failed to provide any. When the state needed to examine spending and make hard budget decisions, he raised your taxes by 67 percent. During a lame-duck legislative session. By trading state jobs for “yes” votes. His 2010 Neighborhood Recovery Program, which is under federal investigation, was seemingly nothing more than a a political slush fund to help shore up city votes ahead of an election that Quinn won by a slim margin.

Quinn has signed some landmark legislation, including laws abolishing the death penalty, legalizing gay marriage and approving medical marijuana. He’s always been a staunch supporter of military veterans.

Ultimately, Quinn’s failed policies, poor leadership and Illinois’ still uncertain future will define the Pat Quinn era. It’s too bad Illinois got that Pat Quinn as governor, and not Pat Quinn the reformer.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

The road to hell is paved with inattention “Like it or not, we must be good to the poor, because if we’re not, we’re going to hell.”

That’s a quote I’ve heard a few times now from Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia. It happens to be one of my all-time favorites, because one cannot escape it. It prompts an instant examination of conscience: What am I doing to help? What have I done today? And what have I done for the person right in front of me and for the person who is suffering a world away? What more can I do?

Pope Francis also is this blunt.

Time and again, he turns his attention to the indifference of the world, to the tendency of humans to ignore the suffering of their fellows, even as it goes on right under their proverbial noses.

On Christmas Day, this is how he put it: “My thoughts turn to all those children today who are killed and ill-treated, be they infants killed in the womb, deprived of that generous love of their parents and then buried in the egoism of a culture that does not love life; be they children displaced due to war and persecution, abused and taken advantage of before our very eyes and our complicit silence. I think also of those infants massacred in bomb attacks, also those where the Son of God was born. Even today, their impotent silence cries out under the sword of so many Herods.”

Writing about his time in Rome helping to elect Pope Francis in an e-book titled “Praying in Rome,” New

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez York Archbishop Timothy Dolan reflected on Chaput’s comment about the road to hell: “[W]hile that’s a rather blunt statement, all of us need to reconnect to this vital lesson.” And about the pope, he said: “Francis is reminding us ... [t]o take care of the poor, to visit the imprisoned, to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to welcome the stranger, to tend to the sick.”

As Edward Norman writes in his 2002 book “Secularisation:” “The church is the body of Christ in the world. This is nearly a literal description for those who locate themselves in the tradition of the historic understanding of Christianity: Christ committed himself to a living company of people, who were for all time to convey his truth. To be Christian is to be integrated with this body, this company.”

This, of course, is counter to a culture that values its independence, even as the talk of “choice” often insists on rejecting the worldview described above, one that sees human nature as fallen and God’s love for us a gratuitous gift which compels us to grateful, radical action in surrender to His will.

As Norman writes: “Modern

people, including many Christian adherents, are now impatient of doctrine – of personal submission to God – and are only too willing to trade it in for the easier allure of the service of humanity. This attracts the plaudits of modern opinion, is less divisive, is now less socially marginalizing also, and allows the individual freedom to contrive religious and moral ideas designed to express privately held beliefs.”

A Christianity without truth, without right and wrong and clear awareness of sin and evil, reconciliation and redemption, is not for real. It misses the boat.

Which is why the pope, if you listen to him, talks time and again, too, of the devil. It’s not to terrify the people he shepherds, but to wake up the world. Indifference has consequences.

And for the Christian, it’s eternal.

The Christian difference of a life lived for others, out of love, brings with it witness to faith, hope and joy. I’m guessing it wasn’t under your tree or in any gadget, but it’s a promise for the new year for anyone serious about resolute renewal.

The Spartans knocked down three in the first quarter of their 71-21 win over Morris, building a big lead. Sycamore (13-2) knocked down a total of 10 3-pointers in the victory.

Five of those 3-pointers came from Spartans senior guard Bailey Gilbert, who was honored as Sycamore’s alltime leading scorer after the win. Gilbert finished with a game-high 23 points.

“Her game has evolved so much to the point where now she’s a scorer. She makes other people around her better,” Sycamore coach Brett Goff said. “That’s the nice thing about her, she’s really worked at it. I’m proud of the fact that she’s accomplished this, and hopefully, we’ve got some more good things to come this year.”

Sycamore was able to get a number of good looks against the Redskins (11-5) defense. It’s something the Spartans have been able to do all season, because of the inside presence of Drake signee Madelyne Johnson.

“You can focus on their 3-point shooters, and then they’ve got great post players,” Morris coach Kate Carey said.

“So, you focus on their posts and they’ve got great 3-point shooters. They’re just an allaround good basketball team.”

The Spartans got off to a 20-2 lead on Morris at the end of the first quarter, and led 38-5 at halftime. Sycamore used a strong full-court press which stifled the Redskins’ offense.

“Couldn’t get the ball past halfcourt,” Carey said. “There were kind of some mental breakdowns on our side.”

On the other side of the ball, it was just tough for Morris to find an answer for the Spartans’ offensive attack. Goff likes the way his group is rolling right now.

“It’s nice to be back on the home floor. It’s been awhile since that’s happened. We usually play pretty well at home,” he said. “We’re really clicking

on all cylinders. I have nothing to complain about tonight.”

Leona Burton finished with six points for Morris. Emily Burling added five.

In the sophomore game, Morris beat Sycamore in three overtimes by a score of 45-39. Meghan Jurak scored 15 to lead the Redskins, while Meghan Smith scored 11.

So far this season, the Redskins have had a tendency to start a game a little complacently, then turn things up as the game wears on. On Tuesday, in a 61-39 win over Coal City, the intensity was there from the get-go.

From the opening tip, Morris coaches Joe Blumberg and Todd Kein were exhorting their team to go hard, move faster, push the tempo, attack the boards. And the Redskins responded. The result was a faster-paced game, on both offense and defense. One that suited the talents of the players on the floor.

“We experiemented a little,” Blumberg said. “We expected a battle with Coal City and we got one. They fought us hard.

“But we wanted to have a new attitude. We wanted to try to speed the game up a little. Our three guards [Jake Walker, Evan Bjelland and Austin Patterson] are really

Marshall played through an ankle injury, part of the reason his numbers were the lowest since his rookie season. He missed the final three games with fractured ribs and a collapsed lung. There were more stories about Marshall’s sessions with the media or on Twitter than his game-changing plays.

Marquess Wilson got plenty of attention in training camp, but he was set back with a fractured clavicle and didn’t show much in the final two months to show he is the next big thing in the Bears’ offense. Josh Morgan was mostly a nonfactor at the No. 3 wideout spot, along with Santonio Holmes during

his stint with the Bears. Dante Rosario made some nice catches and was capable as a lead blocker, but No. 2 tight end is still an offseason need.

Arguably the biggest problem with the top two wideouts, considered the best duo in the game heading into the season, was penalties. Brandon Marshall was penalized seven times (two were declined) and Jeffery had an astonishing five false start penalties among his seven flags. Bennett shouldn’t be absolved when discussing flags, either, as he also was penalized seven times (two declined), including two offensive holding penalties.

Moments that mattered: The best highlight from a receiver had to be Marshall’s one-hand-

ed catch in San Francisco. He was playing on a bad ankle, and that was one of three touchdown grabs. Jeffery’s 74-yard catch in Atlanta would be a close second.

Sticking with the theme of our section on Cutler, how about Marshall’s lost fumble in Week One against the Bills? It was his first lost fumble since 2011, came in Bills territory and led to a Buffalo field goal.

Not to take away from Bennett’s sensational season, but his two memorable moments were the almost-touchdown at the end of the first half against the Packers, and the missed block out in front of Matt Forte on a screen pass against Carolina that likely would have led to a touchdown.

Bears GM candidate Ballard comes with college coaching background

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com Twenty years ago, Chris Ballard was evaluating talent in Texas, helping recruit players for Texas A&M-Kingsville, a school near the Gulf of Mexico that has produced many NFL players, from John Randle to current Bear Roberto Garza.

For the past 15 years, Ballard has been evaluating NFL talent, and his resume could be good enough to make him the next Bears general manager.

Ballard was reportedly in-

terviewing with George McCaskey, Ted Phillips and Ernie Accorsi on Wednesday. Lake Dawson and Brian Gaine, who interviewed Tuesday, both played in the NFL before joining scouting staffs. Ballard’s coaching background could help set him apart.

Ron Harms, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, hired Ballard in 1994, a few years after failing to land Ballard as a player. Ballard played wide receiver at Wisconsin. Ballard was coaching at a high school in Texas, and the head coach called Harms.

“This particular coach had

sent me another young man that had been on his staff and ended up doing quite well with us,” Harms said Wednesday.

“He said, ‘I’ve got another one that’s a good one.’ ” Ballard visited Harms and joined the staff as a graduate assistant before being hired full-time. He coached wide receivers in 1995, the secondary in 1995 to 99 and was the defensive coordinator in 2000.

“I could see that he had a lot of skill,” Harms said of his first impression of Ballard.

“He was an excellent coach, good recruiter, got along well with everybody, had good peo-

ple skills. That’s how I ended up with him, and I felt very fortunate to have him. “... Chris is a likable guy and everybody liked him. He didn’t ruffle any feathers.

I don’t know anybody that didn’t think well of him.”

As far as Ballard’s eye for spotting talent, Harms said there was no question about that.

“Obviously he had that talent. He could spot that,” Harms said about Ballard’s ability on the recruiting trail and judging talent on the roster. “He was pretty thorough about it. He was always very

energetic about people he was recruiting, and energetic in selling them to us and the rest of the staff.”

Harms, who coached for 33 years at three different programs and won one NAIA title, explained how Ballard’s experience with a coaching staff could give him an edge when it comes to the general manager position.

“I think it’s an advantage,” he said. “It’s kind of like knowing every aspect of your business from the bottom to the top. Obviously, having those kinds of experiences have served him well.”

What worked: The best, most consistent player in this group was probably Martellus Bennett, who set a franchise record for catches by a tight end (90) and was second on the team in receiving yards with 916, a career high. What’s amazing is that Bennett could have had even bigger numbers, as a few key plays that resulted in picks or incomplete passes came when the tight end was open.

He worked the seam and the flat well, played through injuries and was a top target for Jay Cutler.

Alshon Jeffery finished with strong numbers, leading the team in receiving yards (1,133) and touchdowns (10), and Brandon Marshall dominated in San Francisco and had a big game in Atlanta.

What didn’t: Expectations were not met all across the wide receiver unit. Jeffery spoiled us in 2013 with his highlight-reel, jump-ball catches down the sideline or in the end zone, and as often as Cutler tried this season, they did not result in completions at nearly the same rate. It would have been asking a lot for him to duplicate those kinds of catches and the num-

When North indicated secondary spade support, South jumped to four spades.

Lower heels and wider shoes can treat Morton’s neuroma Dear Doctor K: I have something called Morton’s neuroma. Can you explain what it is, and what I can do to relieve the pain?

Dear Reader: A neuroma develops when a nerve is compressed, injured or pinched, causing swelling and pain. A neuroma in the area between the third and fourth toes, or between the second and third toes, is known as a Morton’s neuroma. (I’ve put an illustration of Morton’s neuroma on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Morton’s neuroma causes sharp, burning pain and numbness in the toes and foot. You may feel like you’ve stepped on a tiny hot coal and can’t get rid of it. At the same time, you’ll have the discon-

Women, particularly those who wear tight shoes, are at greatest risk for Morton’s neuroma. The best way to prevent the condition is to wear shoes with wide toe boxes. Tight, pointed shoes squeeze bones, ligaments, muscles and nerves.

High heels may worsen the problem by shifting your weight forward. Over time, this combination can cause

the nerves to swell and become painful.

Wearing shoes that provide enough room in the toe box is also the first step in treating Morton’s neuroma. For instant relief when pain flares up, try taking your shoes off and rubbing the area. The nerve can get trapped below the ligament, and rubbing can move it back to its natural position.

Your doctor or a foot-care specialist may recommend lower heels and metatarsal pads. These pads provide cushioning under your neuroma and better arch support to redistribute your weight.

Custom shoe inserts will help correct structural problems and distribute the pressure more evenly.

If you’re in severe pain, your doctor may give you an injection of a local anesthetic combined with a corticosteroid to relieve the inflammation and pain. If you keep pressure off the toes and wear wide enough shoes, the problem may gradually disappear.

For severe or persistent pain, you may need surgery to remove the neuroma. Once the nerve is gone, you permanently lose feeling in the affected area.

One alternative to surgery is to undergo neurolysis injections. These use chemical agents to block pain signals.

Another alternative is to take a prescription pain reliever that alleviates nerve pain.
